A multi-awarded actress and modern Broadway legend, she made her stage debut in a production of ''Theatre/TheSchoolForScandal'' and won her first Tony for the role of Eva Perón in ''Theatre/{{Evita}}''. She would continue to play iconic theater characters, such as Fantine in the original London cast of ''Theatre/LesMiserables'', Norma Desmond in ''Film/SunsetBoulevard'', Reno Sweeney in the 1987 revival of ''Theatre/AnythingGoes'', ''Theatre/SweeneyToddTheDemonBarberOfFleetStreet'''s Mrs. Lovett in the revival, and Rose in the ''Theatre/{{Gypsy}}'' revival. She's also appeared in a number of film and television works, such as ''Film/{{Witness}}'', ''Film/DrivingMissDaisy'', ''Series/ThirtyRock'', ''Series/AmericanHorrorStory'', ''Series/PennyDreadful'', and ''WesternAnimation/StevenUniverse''. |
