5Shirley [=MacLaine=] (born Shirley [=MacLean=] Beaty; April 24, 1934 in Richmond, Virginia) is an American film and theater actress, dancer, activist, and author.

7The older sister of Creator/WarrenBeatty, she made her screen debut in 1955, in Creator/AlfredHitchcock's ''Film/TheTroubleWithHarry'', and over the years she has appeared in such films as ''Film/AroundTheWorldInEightyDays1956'', ''Film/TheApartment'', ''Film/SweetCharity'', ''Film/BeingThere'', and ''Film/SteelMagnolias''. She won the UsefulNotes/AcademyAward for Best Actress in 1983 for her role in ''Film/TermsOfEndearment'', and has been nominated five other times. Offscreen, she is well-known for her beliefs in New Age spirituality and reincarnation, and has written a large number of autobiographical works, many dealing with her spiritual beliefs.

9She played the character of GrandeDame Martha Levinson, mother of Creator/ElizabethMcGovern's Lady Cora Crawley, in the third season of ITV's ''Series/DowntonAbbey''. The contrast between her and Creator/MaggieSmith's Dowager Countess Violet is generally considered priceless.
