Ice King wakes up one morning to discover that his only true friend, his penguin Gunther is missing, taken prisoner by legendary black magician the Dark Magistar Templi Marble. Seeking allies to help him rescue Gunther, he falls in with the wizard gang the Dark Moon Esbats. But are his new friends trustworthy, and is the "new" Ice King an improvement or the reverse?

!This comic provides examples of:
* AmbiguousGender: Alistair is very hard to read in terms of gender, with disordered, bushy hair, an androgynous face, and an overcoat that hides their body shape. It turns out she identifies as female.
* BaitAndSwitch: A burger lady nags Ice King into doing something about a gang of jerk potatoes bullying a milkshake kid for not being cool. Ice King finally stands up, and tells the milkshake kid that he does deserve to be bullied for not being cool.
* BasementDweller: Lazertron turns out to be still living in his mother's basement.
* BlandNameProduct: Marceline gets Ice King's punk outfit from a "Lukewarm Issue" shop, a pun on the "alternative" fashion chain Hot Topic.
* CallBack:
** Ice King spends most of the story rejecting, and then gets back in with, the gang of loser wizards who he had a road trip with in "Thanks for the Crabapples, Giuseppe".
** Marceline's feud with Breakfast Princess after "Princess Day" continues, and she steals her car again.
* ContinuityNod:
** Among the locations Ice King searches for Gunther is the land of cats-in-boxes from "Box Prince".
** Marceline has a BerserkButton about LSP eating her fries.
** The Ice King's visions while he struggles with his ShootYourMate moment include Gunther's alien brain from "Orgalorg", Farmworld!Finn from "Finn The Human"[=/=]"Jake The Dog", Urgence Evergreen, Magwood and Gunther the dinosaur from "Evergreen" and the Ice Thing from "Graybles 1000+".
** Death briefly shows up to collect Ice King's soul but is foiled at the last moment, just like in "Betty".
* CoversAlwaysLie: One of the covers shows Beau (the wizard with the conical hat from "Thanks For The Crabapples, Giuseppe!") with the rest of Ice King's wizard friends. He does not appear in any of the issues.
* CutAndPasteNote: Ice King finds a ransom note for Gunther of this type attached to his fridge.
* {{Delinquents}}: The Esbats are cliched juvenile delinquent magicians.
* FalseFriend: The Esbats pretend to welcome Ice King into their group while actually exploiting him and intending to use him as an expendable sacrifice to help them defeat Templi Marble.
* FeetOfClay: Lazertron has no actual powers other than flashy illusions.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: Marceline and Bubblegum fighting Breakfast Princess and her soldiers in the background as LSP lectures Ice King on being cool.
* HeelFaceTurn: Alistair tries to help the Ice King against the rock golem rather than be "cool", releases Gunther, and ends up joining the Giuseppe society at the end.
* HeyYouHaymaker: Gunther appears by punching Templi Marble when he's about to kill Ice King.
* IJustWantToHaveFriends: Ice King's desperate need for "cool" friends causes him to get tricked by the Esbats and neglect the closest thing to friends he has.
* IReadItForTheArticles: Ron James insists that he's reading ''Magic Users' Monthly'' for the articles and not the centrefold pin-up girl.
* JerkJock: Bob is one of these, whose magic is... um... beating people up really effectively. Subverted, since he's actually an erudite sort who was forced into playing that role by Lazertron.
* LimitedWardrobe: We see Ice King's wardrobe full of identical blue robes.
* LiteralMinded: When Lazertron tells him to "show us that voodoo that you do so well", Ice King is worried that he's not an actual voodoo magician.
* MaamShock: The LGM takes issue with Hambone calling him "grandpa" because he's only 37. So much for being the "Ancient" Sleeping Magi of Life-Giving...
* TheMakeover: Marceline and Bubblegum make Ice King over as respectively a punk and a hipster.
* MeadowRun: Parodied when Ice King and Gunther are reunited.
* MisterBig: Templi Marble is actually very short.
* MyFriendsAndZoidberg: When Ice King hallucinates him being embraced by the people/things important to him:
-->'''Ice King:''' I'm just so dang happy right now! Even if Neptr is here.\
'''NEPTR:''' Papa! Why?
* NeverLearnedToRead: Ron James apparently didn't, despite being a wizard.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: Parodied with Templi Marble - he wanted to build up a fearsome reputation by holing up in his lair and not doing anything, but nobody could be bothered to actually challenge him.
* PeerPressureMakesYouEvil: The Esbats persuade Ice King to help them steal stuff and bully people.
* RunningGag:
** The Ancient Magi of Life-Giving accidentally bringing things to life.
** Abracadaniel getting coffee spilled on him.
* ShoutOut: The traps in Templi Marble's lair are a direct parody of the ones protecting the Grail temple at the climax of ''Film/IndianaJonesAndTheLastCrusade''.
* ShootYourMate: The Esbats try to get Ice King to cement his joining of them by making him attack Abracadaniel. Ice King falls to peer pressure and zaps him in ice.
* StagingAnIntervention: The Giuseppes try to stage one on Ice King about how he is becoming a worse person under the Esbats' influence. It fails.
* ThereWasADoor: Ice King wants to talk to Marceline, but gets things off on the wrong foot by smashing his way into her house through the window instead of using the door.
* ThirdEye: Hambone has three eyes, which are implied to be related to his MindControl powers.
