As often as there has been a teen/junior X-team, there has been a team of Hellions to antagonize them. Originally created by the White Queen of the Hellfire Club to fight the New Mutants.

[[folder:In General]]
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:After being dead for years without returning, most of them were finally revived by The Five and now reside in Krakoa.]]
* CameBackWrong: All of the previously killed members were reanimated by Eli Bard under orders from Selene during the ''Necrosha'' storyline, and were eventually put to rest again.
* CListFodder: They weren't particularly well known, and with the exception of Empath, were all killed by Trevor Fitzroy to show the threat of the Upstarts.
* PsychoRangers: To the New Mutants: Tarot to Dani Moonstar (psychic) Empath to Karma (influencing others), Jetstream to Cannonball (living rocket pack), Catesye to Wolfsbane (animal shapeshifter), Tarot to Magik (magic user), Thunderbird to Sunspot (strong guy), and Roulette to Magma (ranged attacks, although their actual effects are very different).
* RealMenWearPink: Male members wore the same purple and pink uniforms as the females, and were just as tough as any other mutant.
* ScrewTheRulesIHaveSupernaturalPowers: Emma taught the Hellions to live by this trope, and use their powers to enrich their lives as much as she does regardless of who gets hurt. Naturally this gets them all into trouble and eventually killed, which Emma blames herself for.
* SecondaryColorNemesis: More like OpposingSportsTeam than Nemesis, but while the New Mutants wore their mostly yellow X-Men uniforms, the Hellions wore dark purple and purplish pink uniforms.

The (former) White Queen of the Hellfire Club, Emma Frost is a powerful mutant telepath who can transform herself into organic diamond. During her time with the Hellfire Club, Frost continues to run the Massachusetts Academy and mentors the mutant team known as the ''Hellions''. Frost attempts to recruit several gifted youngsters to her cause: Firestar, Doug Ramsey, and again Kitty Pryde, all of which result in altercations. Alongside the Hellions, Frost encounters the Hellions' rival team, Xavier's New Mutants, several times.

!!Manuel Alfonso Rodrigo de la Rocha / Empath
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/empath_xmen.jpg]]
!!!'''Nationality:''' Spanish
!!!'''Species:''' Human mutant
!!!'''First Appearance:''' ''New Mutants'' #16 (June, 1984)

Empath is a mutant with the power to manipulate other people's emotions which he has used for both helping and opposing the New Mutants and the X-Men. Empath was a member of the first group of Hellions at the Massachusetts Academy, is one of the few surviving original students of Emma Frost and has had a long and strained relationship with the X-Men's Magma.
\
When the mutant nation of Krakoa was founded, Empath was one of several "problem" mutants whose personality and powers were causing issues on the island. Due to his transgressions he was sentenced to work under Mr. Sinister and Kwannon as part of a new iteration of the ComicBook/{{Hellions}} designed to channel their anti-social nature into a productive and rehabilitative team.
----
* AintTooProudToBeg: Happy to dish it out, but when attacked by the New Mutants he begs repeatedly when it looks like he's in danger.
* AliensMadeThemDoIt: Perpetrator when he did it to Tom Corsi and Sharon Friedlander.
* AndThatsTerrible: In his earliest appearances, the narration continually stated that Empath cared nothing about anyone and that he essentially viewed people as tools, which was apparent from his actions. Then again, Creator/ChrisClaremont was the writer.
* AristocratsAreEvil: A Spanish nobleman.
* BullyingADragon: Thought it would be funny if he used his powers to make Nanny try to cuddle ''Scalphunter'' just because he could. This earned him a shot to the face.
* EmotionBomb: Used this a lot, especially in the early ''New Mutants'' stories, where he demonstrated remarkably little subtlety and essentially flooded his targets with emotions until they did what he wanted. Generally, only powerful telepaths were able to resist.
* EmotionControl: His main way of using of his power.
* TheEmpath: An unusually sadistic version.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes:
** Well, "Teammate Nobody Likes." The Hellions begrudgingly accept he's part of their team, but he disgusts each and every one of them. Warpath only leads them to save him because it's the principle of the thing, and he still punches Emmanuel in the face.
** The new Hellions don't like him either. By the beginning of the second issue he gets shot in the head by John Greycrow for using his powers to humiliate Nanny. The notes in the fourth issue indicate the Quiet Council expected as much, and the rest of the Hellions carry on with the mission like Empath was never there.
* HandsomeLech: He's handsome but apart from his doomed relationship with Magma, his sleazy charms fall utterly flat on anyone he can't force them on with his powers.
* HatedByAll: Literally every single person who has ever had an idea of what Empath is like wants absolutely nothing to do with him. At all. His teammates have only associated with him due to necessity as a part of the Hellions, but otherwise loathe him for being a degenerate, self-absorbed creep. Even Magma, who might've actually had romantic feelings for him, cannot tell if she cares about Empath or secretly hopes to see him suffer.
* HateSink: In the Claremont days, and pretty much up until the Krakoa Era, he's a disgusting piece of work with absolutely nothing resembling a redeeming trait.
* HisOwnWorstEnemy: By the end of the ''Hellions'' series, he's ''finally'' begun to show a little regret for his actions after realizing he did grow to care about his teammates in at least some sense. Unfortunately, Empath did such a good job of making everyone hate him that he can only get positive feedback by using his powers to force others to like him while fully understanding it's not real.
* LackOfEmpathy: Ironically enough. He can ''sense'' other people's emotions, sure, but that doesn't mean he cares about them in the slightest.
* TheMole: [[spoiler:He was Emma's agent in the Krakoan iteration of the Hellions, spying on them and Sinister for her to report back any secrets or plots that Sinister was hiding from the Quiet Council]].
* MindRape: All the time. He even tried it on Emma Frost, [[CurbStompBattle with predictable results.]]
* MuggingTheMonster: The first time he tries using his powers on Emma Frost, it almost looks like it's worked. Until Emma grabs him by the throat and tells him she's seriously considering killing him for that.
* NoSell: There are limits to how many people he can influence. Emma Frost has proven time and again that Manuel's powers don't work on her due to her stronger mental abilities, and he was incapable of controlling the New Mutants after they were so thoroughly traumatized by dying and being brought back to life.
* OverlyLongName: It is, in full, Manuel Alfonso Rodrigo de la Rocha.
* PoliticallyIncorrectVillain: In addition to all his other [[SarcasmMode charming]] personality traits, he's racist and sexist to boot.
* PrecociousCrush: During a BDSM session with the Red Queen, he admitted to being attracted to Emma while she was his teacher.
* RapeByProxy: He traumatized Tom Corsi and Sharon Friedlander by forcing the two to experience an overwhelming sexual attraction and thus made the two have sex for a prolonged period of time until they were drained in every sense of the word. The New Mutants decided to kick his ass for what he did.
* SmugSnake: Manuel was incredibly arrogant about his powers and his noble blood, as well as being contemptuous of his teammates and enemies alike - but he wasn't nearly as powerful or skilled as he thought he was and was easily defeated by adult telepaths like Frost and Xavier (and even by the New Mutants when they decided to [[PayEvilUntoEvil take revenge for what he did to Tom and Sharon]]).
* TheSociopath: The first issue of ''Hellions'' confirms Empath is indeed a sociopath, but with a twist. Instead of being a sociopath who ironically was given emotion-based powers, Empath's mutation activated at an age earlier than most mutants and screwed up his development by ruining his capability to tell right from wrong when ''everything'' he did was met with positive response.
* TokenEvilTeammate: Most of the Hellions were fairly decent; while several had their {{Jerkass}} moments, they were treated more as a rival sports team to the New Mutants than as genuine enemies. Empath, however, [[EstablishingCharacterMoment in his first appearance]], not only tried to kill Cannonball but nearly killed his teammate Jetstream as well by forcing Magma to shoot lava at them while they were fighting. When Jetstream was justifiably angry about this, Empath controlled his emotions to make him apologize, then threatened to make him kill himself if he ever crossed him again. Later he forced Tom and Sharon to have sex, and tried to subject the female New Mutants to MoreThanMindControl to make them infatuated with him during their stint in the Massachusetts Academy, failing only because they were too traumatized for his powers to have an effect on them. In fact, the opening of ''Hellions'' #1 reveals he used his powers to make Catseye maul Roulette and Tarot for his own amusement before making Jetstream beat up Armor and Glob when they tried to intervene.
* TheUnapologetic: He's never regretted or apologized for anything he's done, and would gladly do it all again given the chance.
* UngratefulBastard: When the other Hellions go to rescue him from the New Mutants, they even acknowledge he wouldn't do the same for them, and won't be grateful. Sure enough, his first response is to complain that they took so long to get there. Warpath punches him.

[[folder:Catseye]]
!!Sharon Smith / Catseye
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/catseye.jpg]]
!!!'''Nationality:''' American
!!!'''Species:''' Human mutant
!!!'''First Appearance:''' ''New Mutants'' #16 (June, 1984)

Catseye was a lavender-haired mutant possessing Ailuranthropy, the ability to shift between human, feline, and werecat forms. She was also a member of the Hellions, and a kindred spirit to Wolfsbane. Tragically, she was killed by Fitzroy, but later resurrected by Eli Bard to kill Emma Frost.
----
* AlliterativeName: '''S'''haron '''S'''mith.
* AmbiguousInnocence: Compared to most of the Hellions, Catseye is ''incredibly'' naive, innocent, and at times even child-like. Part of this, however, is that she sometimes does hurtful things without ''realizing'' they are bad. For example, playfully chasing terrified Hellfire Club maids in her purple-tiger form, not understanding that they are not having as much fun as she is.
* AnimalThemedSuperbeing: Much like Wolfsbane.
* {{Animorphism}}: Or possibly HumanityEnsues, since she considers her cat form to be her real one.
* AntiVillain: The only "evil" thing about her was her loyalty to Emma Frost during the latter's period of villainy.
* {{Catgirl}}: As well as transforming into a large cat, she usually had a cat's tail when in human form.
* CloudCuckooLander: Because she apparently isn't fully human, she has her own peculiar manners and priorities, which make her look like this to the New Mutants and the other Hellions.
* EvilCounterpart: Nominally this to Wolfsbane (they both had shapeshifting powers that worked very similarly; the main difference was that Catseye identified as a cat and Wolfsbane as a human). This suggests that they were rivals, but nothing could be further from the truth- their first meeting had each of them asking the other to join her team, and they remained very friendly outside of the mandatory super-battles.
* GoKartingWithBowser: Got along very well with Wolfsbane.
* InnocentProdigy: Highly intelligent, but very much unused to (and apparently, largely uninterested in) the subtleties and codes of human interaction.
* MinionWithAnFInEvil: She's not really evil at all, but simply [[MyMasterRightOrWrong loyal]] to Miss Frost for saving her and giving her a home.
* TheNicknamer: Usually refers to others by some descriptor, often visual; rarely by name. For example, Rahne (Wolfsbane, a red-coated werewolf) became "Little Red-Fur" in their conversations.
* NoSocialSkills: She is, generally speaking, one of the kinder and friendlier Hellions, but it can require considerable patience to put up with her various idiosyncrasies.
* ParentalSubstitute: Much like Wolfsbane with Moira, so Catseye has a sort-of surrogate parent relationship with Emma Frost.
* SmarterThanYouLook: Spends more time as a cat, and even when human speaks and acts incredibly bizarre, but she's actually quite smart, and absorbs information quickly. So much so even Emma Frost was cautious around her.
* StrangeSyntaxSpeaker: Perhaps because she lived out much of her childhood as a cat, her manner of speech in human form is... unique. Beyond idiosyncratic syntax, she frequently makes up her own compound constructions, rather than using adjectives, adverbials or connectives in their standard forms.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Invariably refers to herself as "Catseye", never "I".
* UnkemptBeauty: As a catperson, she usually doesn't appear to care very much about her human appearance. Though there are also some exceptions; for example, for the Hellfire Club gala she used some quite sophisticated dress and make-up.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Jetstream]]
!!Haroun ibn Sallah al-Rashid / Jetstream
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jetstream_xmen.png]]
!!!'''Nationality:''' American
!!!'''Species:''' Human mutant
!!!'''First Appearance:''' ''New Mutants'' #16 (June, 1984)

Jetstream was given cybernetic implants by the Hellfire Club. They were to protect him from his powers and to travel with self-generated jet-like propulsion. He led the Hellions until his death.
----
* {{Cyborg}}: Artificial Limbs, the ability to interface with the school security system, and most importantly of all, the RequiredSecondaryPowers to prevent him from injuring himself by flying too fast.
* ComboPlatterPowers: Flight and SuperSpeed. However, he lacked innate invulnerability to go with it.
* DependingOnTheArtist: All of the Hellions suffered from this to a certain extent, being relatively minor characters- but Haroun was the only one whose ''skin color'' changed from his first appearance to his second. (Unusually, it didn't get lighter, but went from an almost grayish brown to the same color as Sunspot's.)
* EvilCounterpart: To Cannonball. They had very similar powers, and were pitted against each other a few times.
* FamousNamedForeigner: Shares his name with one Haroun al-Rashid, the fifth Caliph of the Abbasid dynasty (aka the Caliph in The ''Literature/ArabianNights'').
%%* FragileSpeedster: He could be injured or knocked out fairly easily.
* IBelieveICanFly: Similar to Cannonball.
* IOweYouMyLife: His motive for serving the Hellfire Club.
* RequiredSecondaryPowers: He was born without those for flight and super speed, and ended up suffering horrific burns as a result.
* SuperSpeed: Like Cannonball, able to fly at great speeds.
* WeCanRebuildHim: His backstory. Unfortunately, the rebuilder in question was the Hellfire Club in the person of Emma Frost and (probably) Donald Pierce.

[[folder:Roulette]]
!!Jennifer Stavros / Roulette
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/roulette_xmen.jpg]]
!!!'''Nationality:''' American
!!!'''Species:''' Human mutant
!!!'''First Appearance:''' ''New Mutants'' #16 (June, 1984)

Jennifer Stavros, the Hellion with luck-related abilities. As Roulette, she was able to psionically generate discs of 'luck', good or bad, to alter events.
----
* AlphaBitch: In the Firestar miniseries, anyway. Elsewhere she's more of a {{Jerkass}}.
* BadPowersBadPeople: Her power is probability manipulation, and she loves making "creative" use of it.
* CombatPragmatist: The absolute champion of this among the Hellions, the ''evil'' super-team in the series. Perfectly matched by her superpower.
* ColourCodedForYourConvenience: Her "bad luck" disks are black; the "good luck" ones are red.
* DarkActionGirl: As opposed to Tarot and Catseye, who aren't deliberately evil, so much as just loyal to the team.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Unpleasant though she may be, when she finds Empath in the girl's changing rooms trying to use his powers on Rahne and Xuan, she tries to kick his ass same as the others.
* FauxAffablyEvil: She's really a quite unsympathetic, manipulative girl, but it often takes some time to realize it.
* FilleFatale: In a PG-rated way, since the New Mutants and Hellions characters are all teenagers.
* GamblerGroupies: Her background, and also got to play the part onscreen for Doug Ramsey late in the Claremont run.
* {{Sadist}}: A fairly restrained example for a supervillain. She doesn't horribly torture people or anything like that, but she does enjoy other people's humiliations and misfortunes. Naturally, her powers are of good use in such contexts.
-->'''[[TokenGoodTeamMate Thunderbird]]''': He's in agony. What did you do?\
'''Roulette''': Gave him some bad luck. That's a real heavy piece of furniture, T-Bird. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if the boy pulled a muscle or pinched a nerve.\
'''Thunderbird''': You don't sound terribly sorry.\
'''Roulette''': [[LackOfEmpathy Why should I? It was fun.]]
* StreetSmart: An Atlantic City gambler groupie and borderline petty criminal before Frost recruited her for the Hellions.
* SugaryMalice: Both subtle and blatant.
* {{Troll}}: Loves to aggravate and tease people, in both subtle and not-so-subtle ways, and both enemies and team mates.
* WindsOfDestinyChange: Had the power to cause good luck for her allies or bad luck for her opponents.

!!Marie-Ange Colbert / Tarot
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marie_ange_colbert_earth_616_from_spider_man_deadpool_vol_1_11_0002.png]]
!!!'''Nationality:''' French
!!!'''Species:''' Human mutant
!!!'''First Appearance:''' ''New Mutants'' #16 (June, 1984)

With a flip of tarot card, Marie-Ange Colbert - the mutant known as Tarot - could foresee future events with crisp clarity or animate the image on her card to do battle for her. Tarot was a member of the White Queen's Hellions.
----
* AntiVillain: Usually portrayed as fairly sympathetic.
* CleavageWindow: Her new costume includes this, and also a NavelWindow.
* DeathIsCheap: A recurring theme around her. After being killed by Trevor Fitzroy and the Sentinels along with her team mates during the raid on their estate, she resurrected without explanation as a member of King Bedlam's team of Hellions and died again some time after M-Day. Unlike the rest of the Hellions, who had to wait a few more years to be brought back, she reappeared alive during ''ComicBook/SpiderManDeadpool'' without explanation yet again.
* TheFatalist: As Emma Frost complained, "She lets those accursed cards direct her life." Tarot believed that any events she foretold using her cards were destined to occur.
* PoirotSpeak: In the Claremont days, she'd occasional speak in French.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Her outfit after leaving the Hellions is purple.
* {{Seer|s}}: She could sometimes see the future using her Tarot cards, but never seemed to have much control over this aspect of her powers. (Nor did she seem to [[FortuneTeller give readings]].)
* TarotMotifs: She can make the illustrations from her Tarot deck come to life.
* VillainessesWantHeroes: Had a crush on Doug. [[AbortedArc Not that it ever went anywhere...]]

James Proudstar, known as Warpath, is a mutant of Apache descent who has been affiliated with many X-Teams over the years starting with the Hellions. Driven by anger over his older brother's heroic death while an active member of the X-Men, James come to find peace concerning the matter.

* NotBrainwashed: During ''Necrosha'' Karma manages to briefly free him and Beef of Selene's Transmode Virus control, but the two of them keep fighting Karma anyway because they actually like and support her.
* ShockAndAwe: He had the ability to increase the personal storage of bio-electricity within the cells of his body. Bevatron could then channel this energy into radiant discharges of high-voltage energy from his hands.

The super-strong mutant Beef, Buford Wilson, would be the second to the last mutant youth to be recruited into the original Hellions and the second to die at the hands of Fitzroy. Beef appeared only twice as part of the team before his death.
----
* TheBigGuy: His only contribution to the Hellions is his strength.
* EnergyAbsorption: Beef showed the ability to increase his size, resulting in heightened strength. This is normally done by absorbing energies into one's body. Beef's specific energy was never revealed.
* NotBrainwashed: During ''Necrosha'' Karma manages to briefly free him and Bevatron of Selene's Transmode Virus control, but the two of them keep fighting Karma anyway because they actually like and support her, with Beef noting that she is hot.

* DestructiveRomance: He had one with Tarot and was constantly abusive towards her.
* MindRape: He can mentally disrupt other peoples' thoughts by instilling telepathic static in the minds of others that disrupted higher brain functions.
