[[quoteright:231:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bracer_guild_emblem.png]]
A peace-keeping non-governmental organization based in Leman whose main purpose is to protect civilians all around Zemuria. Their members, the bracers, are investigative and combat specialists who help people in numerous ways, be it finding lost items, escorting people or eliminating monsters.
They often act as a neutral faction in conflicts around Zemuria, but are limited by the Bracer Code, which prevents them intervening in political affairs. \

!General bracer tropes
* AdventureGuild: Their basic function. In addition to their code to protect the innocent, the Bracer Guild takes on requests from either the government or civilian population that has them doing a variety of things be it trying to find someone's lost pet or fighting off monsters and criminals among other things.
* GoodCounterpart: To Jaegers. Both bracers and jaegers make a living doing requests for various people, but whereas the bracers do it for the sake of helping the civilian population, jaegers only care about the paycheck they will receive and usually don't care who they have to hurt.
* HunterOfMonsters: Several of the requests they do involve exterminating troublesome monsters.
* ImpartialPurposeDrivenFaction: The Guild is supposed to be non-aligned with, and shouldn't get involved in, any politics or country's governments, sticking solely to its stated purpose of saving lives and helping people.
* JurisdictionFriction: Throughout the ''Trails'' series, various Guild branches have clashed with other regional organizations, from the military to the police, in regards to who gets to handle what incidents.
* LovedByAll: Aside from the antagonists [[JurisdictionFriction and the various government or private agencies they clash with,]] the guild has near unanimous love and support from a majority of civilians in the setting, and the protagonists who aren't part of the guild all have nothing but praise for it.
* ToBeLawfulOrGood: As mentioned above, one of the main conflicts that bracers sometimes have to face is the inevitable clashes they have with the governments of whatever country they operate in. Due to their status as an NGO, bracers cannot legally interfere in government affairs lest sanctions be placed on the guild in response. It usually takes a LoopholeAbuse for the Guild to be able to act.
* ThouShallNotKill: One of their central tenets as bracers only aim to protect life and not take it.

The top-ranked bracer of the Crossbell branch of the Guild, known by moniker "Divine Blade of Wind" and someone believed to be worthy of promotion to S-rank. As the games begin, he is considered the hero of Crossbell, able to succeed wherever the ineffective police fail.
----
* TheAce: To Crossbell's Bracer Guild due to his experience, intelligence, and combat prowess, which made him LovedByAll in in the city. Shows to be the BrokenAce when his role in the Azure Zero project is revealed.
* AscendedExtra: Gameplay-wise. He was only playable for the prologue dungeon in ''Azure'', but [[spoiler: in ''Reverie'' he's a permanent party member once he joins in Chapter 4 of C's route.]]
* ActionDad: Has a daughter named Shizuku and is a very capable MasterSwordsman. Try and mess with her [[PapaWolf at your own peril.]]
* ActuallyADoombot: [[spoiler:There are at least three robot versions of him with no shine in their eyes running around in ''Reverie''. One is fought in Chapter 3 of Rean's route, and the other two double-team C's group in Chapter 4. The real Arios ends up having to save the latter by destroying his fakes in one go.]]
* ActionPolitician: Though the means he gained the title were suspect, he was appointed as Crossbell's Secretary of Defense midway through the Azure Duology and still gave the SSS one Hell of a fight.
* AntiVillain: In a similar vein as Loewe. He helps Dieter Crois with his Azure-Zero Project, but only because he thinks its the only way for Crossbell to become independent and be free of the shackles of Erebonia and Calvard, whose information war and tug of war to take the city for themselves has resulted in numerous tragedies in the city, such as the death of his wife and his daughter being blinded. That [=KeA=] has the power to restore his daughter's sight is a bonus. When the SSS prove that Crossbell doesn't have to resort to such lengths, he concedes.
* ArmorPiercingAttack: When you face him as a boss, he uses the craft Arcane Gale, which hits twice and nullifies your buffs.
* TheAtoner: Part of why he looks after the SSS is due to his guilt over (indrectly) causing Guy's death. Of course, this only lasts until looking after Lloyd and completing the Azure-Zero Plan come into conflict...
** By the end of ''Azure'', he becomes this for real, helping Crossbell fight against the Empire's occupation as part of his atonement. [[spoiler:By the time ''Reverie'' rolls around, two whole years later, he admits he still feels like he hasn't made up for the sins he's committed.]]
* BadassInANiceSuit: Wears one as part of his Secretary of Defense uniform which he wore in his final boss fight against the SSS.
* BadassLongcoat: Like many a MasterSwordsman in ''Trails'', Arios wears a red coat that goes past his knees. Also wore a white one as part of his Secretary of Defense uniform while part of Crois' Azure Zero Project.
* BaritoneOfStrength: A MasterSwordsman, TheAce of the Bracer Guild and one of the strongest characters in the Crossbell duology, with Creator/ToshiyukiMorikawa and Creator/YongYea giving him a suitably deep voice.
* BashBrothers: Was this with Lloyd's older brother Guy back when he was still part of the Crossbell Police Department, with the two considered the strongest and most acomplished duo in the entire CPD until he left to join the Bracer Guild.
* {{BFS}}: His tachi is rather long, though not absurdly so.
* BigDamnHeroes: Does this in his first appearance during the prologue of ''Zero'' where he kills the newly appeared boss monster that would have been above the SSS' level at the time, rescuing them and the two stray children they found and were guarding. Then again when they're outnumbered by numerous monsters at the Ancient Battlefield trying to rescue a tourist. [[RuleOfThree And a third time,]] during the assault on the IBC when they're being overrun, which the members of the SSS lampshade.
-->'''Randy:''' Holy crap! Your timing couldn't have been better!
-->'''Tio:''' It's almost like he planned it.
-->'''Arios:''' Hah...I didn't intend on such a dramatic entrance.
* BlowYouAway: As his title would suggest, his style most utilizes the wind element. It's even the the element of his Master Quartz Kusanagi, and the secondary element in his Orbment.
* TheBusCameBack: He's back as a playable character in ''Reverie.''
* CastingAShadow: His primary element is Time, which tied into his role as an antagonist in ''Azure''.
* CommonalityConnection: With Ian, as both lost loved ones because of Calvard & Erebonia's interventions in Crossbell.
* CriticalHitClass: His default Master Quartz in ''Reverie'', Kusanagi, increases the critical hit rate of it's wielder. His upgraded Supreme Qinggong Craft also grants him the Insight Status along with boosting his stats.
* CrissCrossAttack: His third S-Craft introduced in ''Reverie'', Raging Tempest, starts with him rapidly slashing the enemy apart before [[TornadoMove sucking them all into a cyclone]].
* CynicismCatalyst: Was once an idealistic police officer and bracer with a strong sense of justice. The escalating information war between Erebonia and Calvard resulting in the accident that left his wife dead, and his daughter blinded resulted in him joining Crois to make the Azure Zero project a reality, as he saw it as the only way to make Crossbell a strong and independent state and prevent similar tragedies from ever happening again.
* DeathFromAbove: His Avalanche Cleaver Craft consists of him jumping into the air to land a downward sword slash. His first two S-Crafts, Fujin's Fury and Termination Slash - Black Paragon, both end with him leaping into the air and barreling down on his foes with an overhead slash and downwards sword thrust respectively.
* DecliningPromotion: By the start of ''Zero'', he has been offered a promotion to S-Rank bracer numerous times, no doubt to fill in the vacuum from Cassius leaving the Guild to return to the military. He declined outright, stating he's not in Cassius league, and possibly out of guilt for his role in assisting Crois in the Azure Zero project which went against the Guild's code.
* DoppelgangerSpin: His Twin Arcane Gale Craft in ''Reverie'' ends with him summoning a clone with him and the clone each launching a SwordBeam at the enemy from both ends.
* TheDragon: Initially seems to be this to Dieter, but he was actually following Ian and Mariabell the whole time.
* TheDreaded: To the criminals of Crossbell. Grace merely namedropping him towards some [[TheMafia Revache goons]] in Downtown, about how Arios had been considering stopping by there when they were causing trouble was enough to make them run away. The SSS also dread facing him when he was still a villain supporting Crois' Azure-Zero Project.
* DualBoss: Twice in ''Reverie'':
** [[spoiler:Rufus' party has to battle two robotic copies of Arios in Chapter 4. Once one of their HP bars go down far enough, the real Arios comes in and destroys the fakes.]]
** [[spoiler:In the tournament Episode, he and Victor serve as the final opponents.]]
* EvilAllAlong: Reveals himself as one of the conspirators of the Azure-Zero Project during the WhamEpisode of ''Azure''.
* EvilCostumeSwitch: Upon revealing himself to be one of the conspirators of the Azure Zero Project, he wears a fancy white suit and longcoat as part of his Secretary of Defense uniform.
* FallenHero: Is this during the climax of ''Azure''. Once TheAce of Crossbell's Bracer Guild who was LovedByAll, the death of his wife and his daughter being blinded resulted in him turning his back on the Guild's tenets to be part of Crois' Azure Zero plan to rewrite the state's history to free from the shackles of Erebonia and Calvard.
* FirstNameBasis: [[spoiler:One way you can tell whether an Arios in ''Reverie'' is the genuine article or a robotic copy is in how they refer to Rean; the real one calls him by his first name, while the fake will call him by his last name.]]
* FlashStep: The Eight Leaves One Blade School's 2nd Form, Gale, is all about moving at blinding speeds, and Arios isn't called the "Divine Blade of Wind" for nothing.
* FromACertainPointOfView: Claims he was the one who killed Guy Bannings when Lloyd asks, when it was in fact Ian who did the deed. He still considers himself responsible, as Ian only had the chance to do so because Guy had been exhausted from their earlier fight (which Arios originally started [[HeKnowsTooMuch with the intention of silencing Guy]]) and let his guard down when it seemed he was getting through to Arios.
* GuestStarPartyMember: In ''Azure''. Before he becomes an antagonist, that is.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Was best friends with Guy when the latter was still alive.
* HeelFaceDoorSlam: A non-lethal example prior to the events of ''Zero''. When Guy confronted him at the construction site, they fought, and Guy was on the verge of convincing him to walk away from the Azure-Zero Plan...then Ian killed Guy, causing Arios to lose the will to resist.
* HeelFaceTurn: After ''Azure'''s story is completed, he fully reforms and becomes a genuine ally of the SSS. The credits montage of ''Azure'' shows him working with them during Erebonia's annexation of Crossbell.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: He is mentioned in ''Cold Steel IV'' [[spoiler:having helped the SSS and the bracers to pass a blockade established by Walter to prevent them from interfering with Erebonia.]]
* HopeBringer: As the strongest bracer of Crossbell, he serves as this during ''Zero'' and ''Azure''.
* IaijutsuPractitioner: His Crashing Wave Craft has him perform an iaijutsu stance before launching a SwordBeam at his enemies.
* KeepingTheEnemyClose: As he bluntly states in ''Reverie'', part of the reason he joins up with [[spoiler:Rufus]] and his team is to assess himself if [[spoiler:Rufus]] is going to be a threat to Crossbell and kill him if he is.
* KnightTemplarParent: Among other things, he also assisted in the Azure-Zero Project in order for his daughter to get her eyesight back.
* KnowWhenToFoldThem: At the prospect of facing [[WorldsBestWarrior Arianrhod]], he ''immediately'' tells everyone to leave. When the SSS face her later on, we learn ''[[ThatOneBoss exactly]]'' why...
* TheLeader: He acts as the de-facto leader of Crossbell's guild branch due to his experience, fame and combat prowess.
* {{Leitmotif}}: "Firm Strength" from ''Zero'' is often associated with him.
* LightningBruiser: As to be expected of a MasterSwordsman considered the strongest bracer in Crossbell, he's very fast and can hit extremely hard, whether as an ally or an enemy.
* LimitBreak: For S-Crafts, he has Fujin's Fury as a party member. As a boss, he gains Termination Slash - Black Paragon on top of that. In ''Reverie'', his S-Craft is Second Slash - Raging Tempest, [[note]]''Ni no Tachi: Kojin Tenshou''(literally Second Sword, Raging God Piercing Heaven) in Japanese[[/note]] while Fujin's Fury was made into a regular craft.
* LiteralDisarming: [[spoiler:Does this towards Emperor Dogma at the climax of Rufus' chapter 4 in ''Reverie'' to separate the Heavenly Regalia artifact from his body.]]
* LongHairedPrettyBoy: Too old to qualify for the boy part, but is still rather attractive with his long hair.
* TheLostLenore: His wife's death, and his daughter being blinded in the same incident is what got him to go along with Crois' Azure Zero project.
* LovedByAll: Due to Crossbell's police [[PoliceAreUseless being rendered ineffective due to politics,]] he ended up taking care of the lion's share of high profile cases in handling criminals, which made him the most popular Bracer in Crossbell.
* MasterSwordsman: He is a Divine Blade of the [[FantasticFightingStyle Eight Leaves One Blade]], specializing in the Second Form, Hayate (Gale).
* MyGreatestFailure:
** An explosion that occurred due to the intelligence war between Erebonia and Calvard resulted in his wife Saya dying and their daughter Shizuku being blinded. The grief from this and a desire to prevent other tragedies like it from happening again was how he was roped into helping the Azure Zero Project.
** Guy's death was also this to some extent, convincing him that [[IveComeTooFar he was in too deep in the Azure Zero project to come out]] and regretting getting his best friend killed.
** [[spoiler:Being part of the Azure-Zero Project to begin with. Even two years later, this still weighs so heavily on him that he's unable to forgive himself for it even after everyone else has forgiven him.]]
* OddFriendship: He and Guy were noted to be polar opposites in personality, with Guy being rather hotheaded and passionate in contrast to Arios' more stoic and serious demeanour, no doubt from Arios already being a parent by the time they first met. Despite this, the two became close friends and nigh unbeatable BashBrothers.
* OffscreenMomentOfAwesome: [[spoiler:During the tournament Episode of ''Reverie'', the scene cuts to show him and Victor having narrowly defeated Zechs and Cassius.]]
* OnceDoneNeverForgotten: [[spoiler:On two separate occasions in ''Reverie'', Rean and Rufus' group run into a simulacrum of him assisting Supreme Leader Rufus and the EDF. Before learning that it was in fact a [[ActuallyADoombot simulacrum]] with his appearance, [[StrangeMindsThinkAlike both groups]] acknowledge how he's 'been on the wrong side of history' before when he assisted in the Azure-Zero project to rationalize why he'd take part in such madness.]]
* OneManArmy: He is shown to be extremely powerful multiple times throughout ''Zero'' and ''Azure''. This include dispatching at least a dozen of the BrainwashedAndCrazy CGF soldiers in ''Zero'', fending off the Red Constellation from Orchis Tower during their raid on Crossbell during Chapter 4 of ''Azure'' and overpowering the SSS during Chapter 5 of ''Azure''.
* PreFinalBoss: In ''Azure'', he is the very last opponent fought before crossing the final PointOfNoReturn.
* PromotedToPlayable: He's fully playable in ''Reverie'' the moment he joins in the story.
* RedOniBlueOni: Was stated to be the calm and serious blue to Guy's more hotblooded and passionate red while the two were partners at the CPD.
* RuggedScar: Has one across his left cheek to denote his status as a veteran bracer and MasterSwordsman.
* StatusBuff: His Qinggong craft greatly increases his strength and speed. It's upgraded variant in ''Reverie'' adds a boost to his defense on top of that, along with granting him the Insight status turning him into a deadly LightningBruiser.
* StatusBuffDispel: His Arcane Gale Craft as a boss cancels the target's buffs before hitting the enemy twice, making it an UnblockableAttack that can only be avoided with high evasion. His Twin Arcane Gale Craft in ''Reverie'' retains the effect, making him one of the very few playable characters in ''Reverie'' capable of canceling buffs with just regular Crafts.
%%* StealthMentor: To the SSS, Lloyd in particular. This reaches its crux in the Azure Tree with a duel between him and Lloyd.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: He is 184cm tall(6'0) with long dark hair, and is quite attractive with a few Fangirls in-universe.
* TakingTheHeat: When Lloyd confronts him about Guy's death, he tells him that he is the one who killed Guy when it is later revealed it was Ian. Part of that is because he considered himself responsible for Guy's death even if he wasn't the one who personally pulled the trigger.
* TornadoMove: His S-Craft in Reverie, ''Ni no Tachi: Kojin Tenshou''(Second Sword, Raging God Piercing Heaven) creates one where he sucks his enemies into a giant twister before slashing them, and the aforementioned cyclone apart.
* TragicKeepsake: Near the end of Azure, it's revealed that he kept Guy's tonfas out of guilt over his role in his death before giving them back to Lloyd.
* VillainInAWhiteSuit: His uniform as the Secretary of Defense is mostly white, and it marks the start of his role as an antagonist, particularly when he fights the SSS at the end of Chapter 4 of ''Azure''.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's a little difficult to go in-depth about his character without spoiling ''Azure'''s endgame twists.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: Assisted in the Azure-Zero Project in order to rewrite reality and fulfill Ian and Mariabell's vision for a better Crossbell.
* {{Workaholic}}: His status as Crossbell's #1 bracer puts him in high demand with multiple requests daily. At the start of Chapter 2 of ''Zero'', Michel notes that he goes through about 100 requests per month and is shocked at how he doesn't mind it. Part of his pitch to try to convince Arios to accept the promotion to S-Rank is that it would lighten his workload and [[WhenYouComingHomeDad give him more time to spend with his daughter.]] ''Azure'' reveals that Arios was driven by some ulterior motives for keeping so busy: firstly, it provided him with enough cover to secretly meet with his fellow Azure-Zero co-conspirators, as the inconsistencies in his reporting were simply chalked up to him being overwhelmed by his workload. Secondly, his workaholism was also a coping mechanism for the grief that weighed on him thanks to the "accident" that killed his wife and blinded his daughter.

He's one of only twenty or so A-Rank bracers and the only one permanently stationed in Liberl.
----
* BadBadActing: He disguises himself as a jaeger for a surprise training drill, but he's so over-the-top about it and he still uses his signature crafts, making the disguise fairly obvious. Despite that, he's never found out until after the drill is over because [[IdiotHero Estelle and Anelace]] are the only ones taking the drill.
* BadassCrew: 'Team Kurt' is a powerful WolfpackBoss in ''FC''. In ''SC'', they take on [[spoiler:Ouroboros mooks]] in the Ruan region.
* BoltOfDivineRetribution: The ultimate effect of his S-Craft ''Summon Lightning'' is to invoke this.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: Weissmann brainwashes him to remove his memory of the incident where he obtained the Gospel and later to lure Estelle and company into a trap
* DubNameChange: His first name was originally "Kurz."
* GuestStarPartyMember: He's playable only once in the series, in a hidden quest in ''SC'' where he helps liberate Jenis from Ouroboros' control.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: In ''SC'', he and his bracer group protect civilians from Ouroboros's mooks offscreen.
* InterfaceSpoiler: In the English translation only. Kurt is one of the few {{Non Player Character}}s in ''FC'' to have voice acting, even when two of his fellow bracers did not; this is an early tipoff that he's going to be PromotedToPlayable in the ''SC''.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Lost his memory of the mission involving the Black Orbment.
* TheLeader: He leads an unofficial team of four bracers, first in the Grancel Tournament and later in SC.
* LimitBreak: In ''SC'', his S-Craft is Summon Lightning.
* MagicByAnyOtherName: His Fangshu techniques are the result of a great deal of study and some of them produce effects very similar to Orbal Arts. That said, he has high ATS and a good Orbment setup in the brief time that he's playable, making him no slouch in the more common form of magic.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted in the English version; his new name is one he shares with [[Characters/TrailsSeriesEreboniaThorsClassVIINew a member of the second Class VII]].
* [[SwordPlant Spear Plant]] His S-Craft has him perform one of these before calling lightning down on the spear.

----
* ADayInTheLimelight: The prologue of ''Kuro II'' deals with her personal request for Van, while also highlighting her new dynamic with him.
* AscendedExtra: She went from a supporting character in ''Daybreak'' to a main character in ''Kuro II''.
* AmicableExes: [[spoiler:Elaine was in a relationship with Van during their first year of high school, but he disappeared the following year with nothing but a note telling her that he's sorry. But while there is some obvious tension between the two post-reunion, they still try to support each other any way they can.]]
* BattleAura: She sports a green one in the first ''Daybreak'' game, during [[spoiler:any boss battles against her.]]
* BettyAndVeronica: As one of Van's two primary love interests, Elaine serves as his cool-headed ChildhoodFriend [[spoiler:and ex-girlfriend]] whose aloofness occasionally gives way to an adorably immature side, while [[Characters/TrailsSeriesCalvardArkrideSolutionsOffice Agnès]] shows a surprisingly mature and determined side underneath her normally demure personality. Additionally, Agnès's biggest obstacle in winning Van's heart is in [[JustAKid how he largely doesn't see her as an equal]], while Elaine's is in how [[spoiler:he's not yet ready to open up about his issues with her.]]
* BladeSpam: Her Kaleido Fencer Craft has her stab her sword at high speeds.
* BlowYouAway: Her secondary element is wind; her S-Craft even has her [[PowerGivesYouWings gaining a pair of wings]].
* BlueBlood: [[spoiler:The Auclair family are descended from Old Calvardian nobility.]]
* BootstrappedLeitmotif: [[https://youtu.be/QuwszdAUYwg "What is Ahead of You,"]] a general event theme from the first ''Daybreak'' game, is often regarded as Elaine's theme by both the fanbase and Falcom themselves, for multiple reasons.[[note]]The most prominent of which being how the piece was first used during her EarlyBirdCameo in ''Reverie''[[/note]] To drive the point home, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XDEmGBC7p68 "Knights of Asteria"]], a track from the ''Super Ultimate'' album that is explicitly stated to be based on the aforementioned piece, is clearly meant to be Elaine's ImageSong.[[note]]Not only is it named after her S-Craft, but the final part of the lyrics translates to "I am the 'Sword Maiden.'"[[/note]]
* BreakHerHeartToSaveHer: Has somewhat of an idea on why [[spoiler:Van broke up with her and disappeared after their high school cultural festival]], saying that he "still has important things to take care of" and that he is "very unfair towards her" during one of their one-on-one meetings.
* BuxomBeautyStandard: She's quite well-endowed, and is stated to have received a few offers for modeling gigs (all of which she's turned down).
* CallingTheOldManOut: She delivers some heated words towards her father [[spoiler:after finding out about his dealings with the Almata.]]
* CelebrityIsOverrated: She had received numerous offers to become a model or actress, which she refused due to not being interested in the spotlight, and she showed some slight annoyance at how the press played up her reputation. Part of the reason she initially rejected the promotion to A-rank was due to it being partly done as a PR stunt for the Guild.
* CleavageWindow: Her bracer outfit has an opening in the chest area that exposes some cleavage.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Downplayed. Elaine never outright gets clingy, and she's quick to move past it. Nonetheless, she's never really amused whenever she keeps spotting Van being accompanied by one new girl after another:
** During ''Daybreak'' Chapter 3, she mildly gives him the stink eye when he chooses to sit with Fie over her when drinking coffee together.
** In contrast to Agnès and Feri,[[note]]Where she's just upset that Van is bringing minors into his line-of-work[[/note]] her reaction to Risette in Chapter 4 is nothing but snark:
-->'''Elaine:''' Aren't you lucky? You've got such a beautiful and capable maid to take care of you.
** She also gets a little suspicious when she catches Van talking with Judith in the Intermission.
** This continues in ''Kuro II'', ranging from her being thoroughly unamused whenever Rinze[[note]]The woman in Edith's Dark Light Town that Van helped escape the authorities one time[[/note]] talks about him lovingly, to noting how close he is with Sarah and Shahina with a look of clear suspicion.
* ChildhoodFriends: With Van and René. She hadn't seen the former for years until fairly recently, and she has some mixed feelings towards him, especially in regards to his profession. The latter, meanwhile, was the only one who supported her back when she decided to become a bracer,[[note]]She made this decision while they were still students[[/note]] and she's kept in contact with him since.
* ChildhoodFriendRomance: [[spoiler:It's later revealed that she and Van dated during their high school years. And despite him breaking it off soon when he suddenly dropped out and disappeared, there are still some [[OldFlame lingering feelings]] that are [[EveryoneCanSeeIt incredibly obvious]].]]
* ColorCodedCharacters: Elaine is largely associated with the color green, being the color of her eyes and the most prominent color on her bracer outfit. ''Kuro II'' doubles down on this, as both her new casual clothes and her Xipha are green too.[[note]]In ''Daybreak'', her Xipha had the same brown cover as those belonging to the other bracers[[/note]]
* ContinuityNod: Her unexpected visit to Van's office at the start of ''Kuro II'' mirrors Agnès' at the start of ''Daybreak''.
* ContraltoOfStrength: A MasterSwordsman and LadyOfWar who beat Sara Valestein's record in becoming the youngest A-rank bracer, with Creator/ChiwaSaito giving her the lowest voice of all playable girls in the first two ''Daybreak'' games.
* CooldownHug: Her EarlyBirdCameo in ''Reverie'' has her trying to rescue a pair of kidnapped children. When one of them attempts to attack her with a knife in a panic, she merely grabs the knife and puts it away before giving her a warm embrace to help her calm down and reassure her that she and her brother were safe.
* CostumeEvolution: Her [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elaine_auclair_key_artwork__kuro_ii__2.jpg new outfit]] in ''Kuro II'' keeps the general green color scheme from her previous one, but the new coat has longer sleeves and [[https://www.falcom.co.jp/kuro2/assets/gallery/images/22.webp a black shirt underneath it]], the shorts are brown instead of white, thigh-high black boots replace the previous knee-high white boots over black thigh-high stockings, and gloves aren't included.
* DatingWhatDaddyHates: [[spoiler:It's clear that her father Edmond disapproved of her friendship with Van, an orphan of unknown origin, and he did his best to separate the boy from her. Nonetheless, Elaine ended up dating Van within a year of reuniting as high schoolers.]]
* DualBoss: [[spoiler:She battles alongside Zin during the Intermission of ''Kuro II''.]]
* DubNameChange: In the original Japanese script, her moniker is the "Sword Maiden."[[note]]剣の乙女, "Ken no Otome"[[/note]]
* DuelBoss: Her battle with Van in the first ''Daybreak'' game is one-on-one.
* EarlyBirdCameo: While her proper debut is in ''Daybreak'', ''Reverie'' has her star in a short story explaining how she accepted her promotion to A-Rank, even giving the player a glimpse of her [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/elaine_8.png from behind]]. It can be read after completing the True Reverie Corridor, as well as reading Rean and Renne's short stories.
* ElementalEyeColors: She has green eyes, matching her secondary element of [[BlowYouAway Wind]].
* EmbarrassingNickname: She's sometimes called "El-ko" by both Van and René, a nickname she had when they were children that she's not very fond of.
* EveryoneCanSeeIt: A number of characters can easily tell that Elaine has a thing for Van, [[spoiler:even after he broke up with her 7 years prior to ''Daybreak''.]]
* ExpyCoexistence: With [[Characters/TrailsSeriesEreboniaThorsClassVIIOriginal Alisa Reinford]]. Elaine's background and relationship with her father bears similarities to that of Alisa and her own mother Irina: both come from wealthy families that own influential companies (Reinford Group for Alisa, Quincy Company for Elaine) and both have issues with their parents currently leading said companies which caused them to try strike out on their own. They also incidentally have [[PaletteSwap almost identical]] [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lA9yf7nEmwo swimsuits]]. The main difference is that Alisa eventually made peace with her mother, whereas Elaine has currently yet to do the same with her father.
* {{Fangirl}}: She's the Calvard arc's resident Mishy fanatic. She's got it so bad that she goes on a bit of a tangent regarding the "localization" the mascot had to go through just to make its Republic debut.
* FightingYourFriend: She's depicted as fighting Van in the opening movie for ''Daybreak''. [[spoiler:Regardless of the route taken during Chapter 5, the two end up fighting each other as a result of Almata's game.]]
* GuestStarPartyMember: She's playable at various points in the first ''Daybreak'' game, but never gets to stick around for too long. Not so much in ''Kuro II'', where she's playable for all of the prologue and Chapter 1B, and is generally treated as a main party member at the start of Chapter 3.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: She has platinum blonde hair and is a kind and heroic individual.
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: She doesn't really believe herself worthy of her A-rank status, but keeps at it because she wants to use her status to be able to help more people in the long run.
* HighSchoolSweethearts: [[spoiler:She and Van dated while they were students at Aramis High School before he disappeared without a word. Despite the complicated circumstances of their past break up, it's clear [[OldFlame she still holds a torch for him]] even in the present as adults.]]
* HintDropping: [[spoiler:During her final Connect Event in ''Kuro II'', she tells Van that her family has been making multiple attempts to set up an ArrangedMarriage for her, and that she's turned them all down. While he did have a noticeable reaction to the first part, he didn't quite piece together that she's telling this to let him know that she's "still available."]]
* HopeBringer: While she was originally unwilling to be promoted to A-Rank, she realized that the title and the fame that followed it could allow her to become a light in the darkness for those who need it.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: [[spoiler:As seen in the Long Trailer for ''Kuro II'', her stomach get run through by Grendel-Zolga's tail.]]
* IWillFindYou: Part of the reason she became a bracer was to look for Van after [[spoiler:he broke up with her and suddenly disappeared.]]
* ItWasAGift: During Elaine's second Connect Event in the first ''Daybreak'' game, Van gives her a limited-edition Mishy movie merchandise to make-up for him breaking his promise to her that they'll go to Mishelam with René during their high school years. It wasn't the gift that made her happy though, it was the fact that he still remembered the promise after all these years they've been far apart.
* KnightInShiningArmor: She fights with a "knight's sword," even learning her skills by studying an ancient sword style Calvard's days as a kingdom, and has a firm desire to help others as a bracer. Her S-Craft is even named Knights of Asteria.
* LadyOfWar: She is the daughter of a wealthy businessman, [[BlueBlood whose family were once nobility]], known as the "Beauty's Blade," and uses a graceful sword style dating from when Calvard was still a kingdom.
* LastNameBasis: Aaron refers to her as "Auclair." Likewise, she's the only person (barring René) that [[Characters/TrailsSeriesImperialLiberationFront Swin]] refers to by their surname in ''Kuro II''. What makes this especially noteworthy is that Nadia calling her "Elaine-san"[[note]]Before this, she referred to her as "Ken no Onee-san," which is essentially the same as calling her "Ms. Beauty's Blade"[[/note]] is taken as a sign that the former assassin duo had truly warmed up to her.
* LifeDrain: Sword Ortus/Lord Ortus heals the party's HP after dealing damage.
* LightEmUp: She has Mirage as her primary element.
* LightIsGood: Her primary element is Mirage, with her emitting light from her sword when using "Silvery Cross." And as a member of the Bracer Guild, it's her duty to help the people.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: She maintains a close friendship with René, who was one of the few supporters she had when she chose to become a bracer, but neither see the other in a romantic light.
* LimitBreak: Her S-Craft is Knights of Asteria.
* LongHairIsFeminine: She's a graceful LadyOfWar from an upper-class background with hair that goes down to her waist.
* MaamShock: Less "shock," and more "[[TranquilFury silent anger]]," but the one time Aaron tries to refer to her as "obahan,"[[labelnote:Translation]]A ruder variation of "Obasan," the Japanese term for "aunt" that's often used for any significantly older woman[[/labelnote]] she swiftly puts her sword in his face until he meekly changes it to the more polite "oneesan."[[labelnote:Translation]]Literally "older sister," but often used as a nicer way to refer to an older woman[[/labelnote]]
* MasterSwordsman: She's a master of the old Calvardian swordsmanship who, under normal circumstances, is actually stronger than Van, as seen when she effortlessly put a stop to his and Aaron's duel.
* MercurysWings: Her Lohengrin Craft shows her gaining glowing wings on her feet that allow her to quickly move around her opponent to attack.
* NonIdleRich: Is the heiress to the successful Quincy Company, but chooses to be a bracer to help people rather than coast by her father's wealth in a life of luxury.
* NotSoStoic: As the first ''Daybreak'' game goes on, the number of moments where her calm exterior breaks begin to pile up:
** On the serious side, [[spoiler:she acts uncharacteristly hasty in Chapter 5, as the destruction of Creil Village and her inability to do anything about it put her on edge.]]
** On the comedic side, her less mature side becomes readily apparent the more she has to deal with [[ChildhoodFriendRomance Van]].
* OldFlame: [[spoiler:Has lingering feelings for Van, the guy who broke up with her after he disappeared with nary a word.]]
* {{Ojou}}: Much like [[VideoGame/TheLegendOfHeroesTrailsOfColdSteel Alisa]], Elaine comes from a wealthy family and her father is even the CEO of a company.
* [[OneManArmy One Woman Army]]: Her EarlyBirdCameo in ''Reverie'' has her effortlessly dispatching over a dozen mafia grunts while trying to rescue a pair of children they kidnapped.
* OutOfFocus: Despite her promotion to main character status in ''Kuro II'', she doesn't even appear during Chapter 2 outside of an optional quest, and she isn't seen much during the Intermission once the main story starts up. She does get more screentime afterwards, though, as she's an active party member right from the start of Chapter 3A.
* PaletteSwap: Her [[https://i.redd.it/izg0mhf09kz91.jpg swimsuit]] in ''Kuro II'' is the same one [[https://www.siliconera.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/TheLegendofHeroesTrailsofColdSteelIV26_thumb.jpg?resize=554%2C554 Alisa had]] in ''Cold Steel IV'' and ''Reverie'', only with the red bits changing to green.
* PitGirls: This is the basis for her "[[https://twitter.com/dengekionline/status/1565584075477331968 Z1 Racing Queen]]" DLC costumes.
* PowerTrio: With Van and René. Even years apart hasn't dulled their ability to work together.
* PowerGivesYouWings: Her S-Craft, Knights of Asteria, has her gain a pair of glowing wings on her back before moving in and slashing her enemies apart.
* PropagandaHero: As shown in her ''Reverie'' side story, Zin tried to convince her to be one for the Calvardian Guild by accepting a promotion to A-Rank, as she'd already garnered quite a bit of fame beforehand. She's initially against the idea, having already turned down interviews and offers to model for magazines or act in movies, but later accepts due to her desire to help others.
* RebelliousPrincess: Elaine is the daughter and heiress of a wealthy family. However, rather than live a cushy lifestyle, she instead chose to work as bracer after graduation partially in defiance to her father.
* RedBaron: She is known as "Beauty's Blade." Van reveals early on that said title was in part inspired by the fact that Elaine had mastered an old sword style from when Calvard was still a kingdom.
* RequiredPartyMember: [[spoiler:She and Van are forced to be the only party members during the 3rd part of ''Kuro II'''s Final Battle.]]
* SenselessSacrifice: [[spoiler:She dies protecting Van from Grendel-Zolga during ''Kuro II'''s prologue, only for him to get killed a few seconds later trying to avenge her.]]
* SinsOfOurFathers: It becomes apparent later on that part of her motive for becoming a bracer is a desire to hold her father accountable for his less than savoury actions such as [[spoiler:backing anti-immigration terrorists, sponsoring Almata, and being responsible for Van being taken by the DG Cult.]]
* TheStoic: She responds to most situations calm and collected, without raising her voice or massive change in expression. The key word here being "[[NotSoStoic most]]."
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Her "Z-1 Race Queen" costumes shows quite bit more skin than her relatively conservative default outfits:
** The Type-A comes with a small black top that exposes a lot of cleavage and fully exposes the entire stomach area, and the shorts are ''really'' short.
** [[https://www.falcom.co.jp/kuro2/assets/product/dlc/thumbs/z1queen_elaine.webp The Type-B]] might not expose the stomach area, but makes up for it by revealing even more cleavage and completely exposing the legs.
* StudentCouncilPresident: After serving as the Vice-President during her first year at Aramis High School, she succeeded René as the President in her second year, [[spoiler:with Van as the (originally intended) Vice-President before he disappeared.]]
* SwordBeam: Her Silvery Cross Craft has her sword emit silver energy that she sends at the enemy in the shape of an X.
* SwordPlant: ''Kuro II'' adds the Craft Sword Ortus, and by extension its upgrade Lord Ortus, to her arsenal, which shows her sticking her now-glowing sword in the ground to create a larger blade from beneath the target.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:During the prologue of ''Kuro II'', she pushes Van out of the way, causing her to get fatally impaled by Grendel-Zolga's tail.]]
* ThirdPartyStopsAttack: She disarms both Van and Aaron when the two of them were having their duel at Langport.
* UnresolvedSexualTension: With Van; [[spoiler:despite hints of the two still having feelings for one another, various issues, such as Van's demonic roots, make them hesitant to act on those feelings for a good chunk of the arc.]]
* UptownGirl: She's a wealthy heiress and a renowned bracer [[spoiler:whose family were previously nobility when Calvard was still a kingdom,]] whereas Van grew up an orphan and is a Spriggan. [[spoiler:They used to date, and it's clear Elaine still carries a torch for him in the present.]]
* WhatTheHellHero: A subdued example towards Van. Whereas René somewhat took it in stride, Elaine was not at all pleased when Van suddenly left and then came back years later as a part of a shady business and not really contacting her much afterwards either. [[spoiler:Not helping matters is the fact that the two of them were dating when this happened, but Van broke things off with Elaine which left her heartbroken and wondering why he left her.]] However, she keeps this mostly bottled up, and outside of being somewhat passive-aggressive, she acts civil with Van and tries to reconnect with him.
* WorfHadTheFlu: [[spoiler:The only reason Van could defeat her one-on-one without using Grendel was because she was still exhausted from fighting Arioch beforehand.]]
* WorkingWithTheEx: [[spoiler:She and Van were previously in a relationship before splitting up under less-than-ideal circumstances. Throughout the events of ''Daybreak'', the two end up working together throughout various cases, and she's hoping to receive an explanation from him on why he suddenly left in hopes of finding some closure, which she finally gets with TheReveal that Van has been the host of the Vagrants-Zion demon his entire life.]]

A rookie bracer in the Bose region and lover of all things cute. Her grandfather is the legendary swordsman Yun Ka-fai, who has an entry [[Characters/TrailsSeriesEreboniaOthers here]].
----
* AmbiguouslyGay: She didn't really show any signs in ''FC'' or ''SC'' (humorous misunderstanding aside), but in ''The 3rd'' she's essentially "girl-crazy." Of course, she has a penchant for cute things in general, but ''The 3rd'' is where the line gets really blurry. She also notably expressed jealousy over Mayor Maybelle and Lita's relationship.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Because of her extreme fascination with [[CutenessProximity cute]] [[GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals things]] to the point of making it her catchphrase, it's easy to forget that she's also [[OldMaster Yun Kafai's]] granddaughter and a student of the Eight Leaves One Blade style. You know, the same style [[TheAce Cassius]] used and [[MasterSwordsman Arios]] uses. When she gets serious, much ass is kicked. In Star Door 5 of ''The 3rd'', she can square off against Richard and win, which is no mean feat considering he was the penultimate boss of ''FC''.
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: During ''SC'', she is briefly mind-controlled by Weissmann.
%%* BladeSpam: Eight-Leaf Blitz.
* CharacterCatchphrase: "Cuteness is Justice!"
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: When cuteness enters the equation, she leaps firmly into this territory. Even bad guys call her out on this.
* ContinuityCameo: ''Cold Steel IV'' shows a grown-up Anelace (with an appropriately updated design) in one of the epilogue slides.
* CostumeEvolution: While it has yet to make a proper appearance, one of the epilogue slides for ''Cold Steel IV'', as well as a single key visual for ''Reverie'', features a new outfit for a now-adult Anelace: her blue armor over a red ensemble has been replaced by a blue jacket, a white shirt, and a new red mini-skirt, and her old white fingerless gloves have been traded in for blue ones.
* CuddleBug: If it's cute, she'll try to hug it.
* CutenessOverload: During her first meeting with Tita, if Agate is your companion, she is momentarily rendered completely insensate by the cuteness and has to struggle to speak for a few seconds.
* CutenessProximity: So very much.
** ImTakingHerHomeWithMe: To the point where she invokes this on Tita when they first meet.
* FantasticFightingStyle: A practitioner of the Eight Leaves One Blade style, which was invented by her grandfather. Which of its eight Forms she specializes in (if she's picked one yet) is unknown.
** Both her Swordwind craft and S-craft imply that she has a preference for the 6th form, Scarlet Sky.
* GenkiGirl: If there is anyone in the trilogy who can even hope to compete with Estelle, it's her.
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: Her favorite hobby is collecting plushies.
* GuestStarPartyMember: In ''SC''. In ''The 3rd'', though, she's a full-time party member.
* InterfaceSpoiler: In the English translation only. Like Kurt, Aneleace has voice acting in ''FC'' even though her companions don't. Sure enough, she's PromotedToPlayable in the sequels.
* LightningBruiser: Normally she's closer to the JackOfAllStats, but she becomes this when given her exclusive sword in ''The 3rd'', [[DiscOneNuke as it boosts all her stats tremendously]]. Winning its upgrade sends her through the roof.
* LimitBreak: In ''SC'' and ''The 3rd'', her S-Craft is Piercing Wave.
* MagicallyIneptFighter: Unusually for a character with balanced stats, her Orbment setup is terrible. This is balanced out by her Jinu sword, which makes her into a physical LightningBruiser.
* SweetTooth: She likes ice cream, enough that it's even part of her profile picture on The 3rd's website.
* SwordBeam: Her ''Swordwind Slash'' Craft and ''Piercing Wave'' S-Craft, which creates overlapping ''explosive'' sword beams at higher levels.
* TheKnightsWhoSaySquee: She has a great deal more respect for Cassius than his own daughter does, in part because of the whole S-rank bracer thing and in part because [[spoiler:he also studied the sword under her grandfather.]] She seizes the opportunity to meet with him when it arises.

A member of the Erebonian Branch of the Bracer Guild, recruited by Olivert to be a part of the Crimson Wings. Formerly a co-worker of Sara's from her bracer days, he looks out for Class VII whenever he can at her request. In ''Cold Steel II'', he accompanies Rean in his search for his classmates. It's also revealed that the book series, Carnelia, is based on the life of Toval himself.
----
* TheAce: When it comes to using arts, at least, Toval tends to be acknowledged as frighteningly good with them. Translates into gameplay by having a unique accessory that he permanently has equipped that halves his casting time, allowing him to pump them out far faster than anybody else. Ein makes fun of him for this, calling him "a hack of a bracer" though she just does it in jest.
%%* AceCustom: His Orbment.
* AlmightyJanitor: [[spoiler:As stated in ''Cold Steel IV'', he's been offered a promotion to A-Rank, but he turned it down, feeling more comfortable at B-Rank.]]
* AscendedExtra: First mentioned all the way back in ''FC'', first appears in person in [[AllThereInTheManual Ring of Judgment]] and finally shows up in the games in ''Cold Steel I''. He then ends up becoming a playable character in the second game too.
* BadassLongcoat: Wears a white longcoat, and while not on Arios or Cassius' level, is still quite capable in a fight as a senior bracer, even holding off [[TheDragon Campanella]] during ''Cold Steel III''.
* BigDamnHeroes: Near the ending of ''Cold Steel II', he and Olivert show up to fend off Duvalie and Blueblanc to allow Class VII to advance further into the Infernal Castle.
* BigBrotherMentor: He serves as an older brother figure Estelle and Joshua in Ring of Judgment, and later towards Rean and the members of Class VII.
* BlackMage: He does almost all of his fighting with his [[MagicFromTechnology Tactical Orbment]] and is exceptionally skilled in its use. He can use unique and powerful Arts and cast them very quickly thanks to his unique accessory.
* BlowYouAway: His S-Craft Rebellion Storm, which includes apparent TornadoMove. His primary element-restricted slot in his orbment is also wind.
* CrutchCharacter: In ''Cold Steel II'' where he first joins up with Rean and his levels are far higher than Rean's. It doesn't last long and Rean will catch up to his levels quickly, plus he leaves just before Act 2 starts. He does join in the Epilogue however.
* DecliningPromotion: Near the end of ''Cold Steel IV'', it's revealed that Toval has been offered a few chances to be promoted to A-Rank but turned them down.
* DemotedToExtra: In ''Cold Steel III'' he's back to being an NPC again much like in ''Cold Steel I''. [[spoiler:He's playable again in ''Cold Steel IV''.]]
* EmbarrassingNickname: He would prefer not having people call him Toby, likely since it's also the name used for the protagonist of the book series Carnelia that's based on him and his life.
* FragileSpeedster: Toval is this in terms of Orbal spellpower. His magic is average in strength but can't really compare to some of the characters with either abnormal abilities or some of the noble bloodlines in terms of power. But he can cast them faster than anyone, even Campanella. It's even said his spell speed is faster than even the Hexen Clan.
* FictionAsCoverup: The character of Toby was based on him, though the cover-up is more for Ein's sake than his.
* HeroOfAnotherStory: Given that what we know of Toval's adventures we also know are heavily embellished thanks to Micht, much of what he's done in the past is simply left up in the air. All we really know for sure is that he, Ein and Micht seem to be good friends.
* IHaveManyNames: Before meeting somebody (implied to be Ein), Toval used many, many nicknames, aliases and some full-on alter-egos when doing what he did (which is unspecified, though it seems he was just an unaffiliated adventurer). He only uses them when needed nowadays and just goes by Toval. It's likely "Toby" was based on one of said identities.
%%* LawmanBaton: His primary melee weapon.
* LimitBreak: His S-Craft is Rebellion Storm.
* MadeOfIron: [[spoiler: While Olivert loses an eye and Victor loses an arm and both are permanently crippled in fighting power as a result, Toval manges to survive the Courageous going down with only minor injuries and is completely back to form a little over a month later.]]

----
%%* BigEater
* HandbagOfHurt: Aina uses hers as an improvised bludgeoning tool during a flashback in ''The 3rd'', when she and Schera are evading assassins in Grancel. Played mostly for laughs but it can do respectable damage when it connects. She keeps all kinds of things that can be made into improvised weapons inside it.
* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: She is apparently a heavier drinker than Schera.
** NeverGetsDrunk: Olivier calls her a bottomless hole. In one amusing scene in ''SC'', Olivier and Anton drink an alcohol-countering drug and challenge her to a drinking contest where she has to drink as much as both of them combined. They end up passed out after drinking eighteen glasses of an unspecified GargleBlaster each. Aina had kept up with them the whole time, and said that they'd just gotten to the level that she considered social drinking.
* ImprovisedWeaponUser: When she was chased around during Moon Door 2 in ''The 3rd'', she used her briefcase to hit enemy units.
* InheritanceMurder: Played with. According to a flashback in ''The 3rd'', her uncle hired jaegers to capture her and force her to give up on her grandpa's inheritance, but even if they did end up killing her, they could just forge papers to get her inheritance anyways.
* {{Ojou}}: She's the heiress of the Holden family, but this resulted in a lot of terrible treatment from her greedy relatives who wanted her inheritance.
* RegalRinglets: A hint at her family history. She's also the most reserved receptionist of the Liberl Branches.
* UnexpectedInheritance: Always knew she was going to receive an inheritance from her rich grandfather, but didn't expect that he'd leave her '''everything'''. This lead to her relatives trying to control the family fortune by controlling the underage heiress.
* UnskilledButStrong: During her time as a guest character, Schera notes that she's physically fit enough to keep up with her in terms of stamina. Aina's normal attack also deals decent damage, but with very low accuracy.
