!!!'''Species''': Human
!!!'''Appearances''': ''The Last War'' | ''Lifebringer'' | ''Brotherhood War'' | ''Brotherhood War: Aftermath'' | ''Hyborean''
!!!'''Voiced by''': Riley Mikesell, Xander N (young Zach)
A [=SPARTAN-III=] who joined Phoenix after losing his fellow brothers in arms.
----
* BadassNormal: Zach is introduced as one of Phoenix's best operatives, able to bring down multiple Sangheili by hand with ease. He later turns out to [[EmpoweredBadassNormal be much more.]]
* CharacterDevelopment: Over the latter half of ''The Last War'', Zach gradually outgrows being TheQuietOne as well as his DeathSeeker tendencies, thanks in no small part to his interactions with Katherine and later Guardian. He continues to open up during ''Brotherhood: War'' through his interactions with Denver.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Zach lost his family and friends at a young age when the Covenant destroyed his home planet Arcadia. Soon after, ONI abducted Zach and conscripted him into the Spartan-[=III=] program where, over the next 5-6 years, he underwent extensive training and various augmentations alongside the Spartan-[=III=]s of Beta Company before being selected for the Headhunter Ops. While out on a mission, the remaining Spartan-[=III=]s from Beta Company were sent to take down a Covenant re-fueling station; only two survived. Upon return, Zach was read the reports on how many of his fellow [=III=]s were ''slaughtered''.
* DarkIsNotEvil: He's one of the main heroes of the series and just happens to sport black armor throughout ''The Last War''.
* DeathSeeker: After losing so many of his fellow Spartans, Zach had little else to live for and resolved to focus on killing the enemy until he finally died himself. He grows out of this mindset after his interactions with Katherine, as well as his bonding with Guardian and developing a friendship.
* {{Deuteragonist}}: As ''The Last War'' continues and more is revealed about Zach's background, he becomes the secondary protagonist, behind Katherine.
* {{Foil}}: To Katherine. Both are the [[SoleSurvivor Sole Survivors]] of their respective squads and cope with it similarly. Katherine closed herself off but opened up to Tanner and Phoenix Team after bonding with them. Zach sealed himself off completely and never said a word to anyone until Katherine came into the picture. Whereas Katherine widely recognized as a Spartan, Zach's identity was kept secret from everyone except Logan. But while Katherine found friendship and love, Zach still remains socially detached, with his closest friend being an artificial intelligence, though he is growing out of it a little with Denver.
** Zach can also be considered a foil to Gabe; both excel in close-quarters combat, come from a DarkAndTroubledPast where they've lost their families and countless brothers-in-arms, and the trauma from their respective pasts have severely damaged their psyche, extensively impairing how they interact with others. The difference lies in how they behave due to their trauma, with Gabe's causing him to berate and lash out at others, while Zach became more introverted, ceasing contact altogether.
* TheHero: He graduates from supporting character in ''The Last War'' to the main protagonist of the Lifebringer saga.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: He has one with Guardian in ''Lifebringer'', which helps him snap out of his programming for good.
* {{Invisibility}}: Zach's armor ability, courtesy of Brett (though it gets destroyed during ''Lifebringer'').
* ItsPersonalWithTheDragon: In ''Brotherhood War'', Zach's conflict is with Garrett, Nyla Isaka's second-in-command, due to him being a former squadmate and fellow Spartan-III.
* TheLancer: For Katherine throughout ''The Last War'' as the squad is whittled down and he steps into the forefront.
* TheQuietOne: He remains mute for at least half of ''The Last War'', until finally speaking to Katherine after she rescues him. The rest of Phoenix Team are surprised by this, as even they couldn't get him to speak.
* StealthExpert: His area of expertise.
* SuperSoldier: A prerequisite for a Spartan, though nobody finds out until later on.
* TakingTheBullet: [[spoiler:Takes a hit meant for Garrett near the end of ''Brotherhood War''. Fortunately, he survives.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: One can't discuss Zach in ''The Last War'' without acknowledging TheReveal that he's a Spartan-III.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Zach begins to experience romantic feelings for Denver, due to his body's constant self-repairing effectively flushing out the inhibitors that keep his pheromones in check. Zach is naturally put off by it.

The new [=SPARTAN-IVs'=] commanding officer and mentor figure.
----
* BigGood: As the overseer of the new [=SPARTAN=] program, he's this for Saul and his squad.
* TheCameo: He appears in ''Omega Halo'''s epilogue, where he reunites with Saul in the afterlife.
* AFatherToHisMen: His care for the [=IVs=] is almost fatherly-like, especially between him and Saul, who takes his death the hardest.
* GreaterScopeParagon: Despite being killed off in ''Generations'', Harper's wisdom continues to live on across the series as it is carried through Saul, Katherine, and Zach.
* TheMentor: For the new [=SPARTAN-IVs=], especially Saul. [[MentorOccupationalHazard Unfortunately...]]
* MentorOccupationalHazard: He suffers this fate at the hands of 'Thalashee when he attacks the base.
* ParentalSubstitute: He was Saul's father figure for most of his career.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: While Saul's superior, he has enough faith in his leadership abilities to allow him free reign when it comes to handling the squad.
* SoProudOfYou: When the [=SPARTANs=] complete their final simulation without a single casualty, proving their capabilities as a team, he lets them know how proud he is, and again when he's reunited with Saul in the afterlife epilogue of ''Omega Halo''.

!!!'''Species''': Human
!!!'''Appearances''': ''Generation'' | ''Omega Halo'' | ''The Last War'' (Flashbacks)
!!!'''Voiced by''': Jacob Whittington
The leader of a new team of [=SPARTANs=].
----
* AndThisIsFor: Right before taking down the Shipmaster's shields to allow Grey an opening, he has some choice words for him:
-->'''Saul''': You ''sicken'' me, Shipmaster. You're a tyrant and a '''murderer.''' So this is for Earth. For my squad. And for the thousands of humans that you've slain!
* BackForTheFinale: [[spoiler: Appears to Zach (alongside the other Spartan-[=IV=]s) in the afterlife when the former has a near-death experience during ''Hyborean''.]]
* BigBrotherInstinct: He plays the role of a strict older brother towards his squad, but especially towards Katherine. He goes outright ''berserk'' when the Shipmaster seemingly kills her.
* {{BFG}}: He starts lugging around a SPARTAN Laser in ''Omega Halo''. He's ''very'' proficient with it.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: After all the fighting, pain, and loss he endured over the series, Saul finally gets to rest in peace, reunited with his fallen teammates, and his actions allowed Katherine to survive, so that she may continue to save others, thus continuing the cycle to save humanity.
* TheHero: Moreso for ''Generation'', as the plot largely focuses on him coming into his own as a leader and stopping 'Thalashee.
* HeroicBSOD: Falls into a pretty bad one when Harper is killed by 'Thalashee, and since Harper was like a father to him, he takes it harder than anyone else. Fortunately, Cameron helps him out of it with some encouragement.
* HeroicSacrifice: Saul is badly wounded saving Katherine from a Flood form and starts bleeding out. Knowing he would just slow Katherine down, he decides to stay behind and hold off the Flood.
* ItsAllMyFault: He blames himself for the deaths of his squad. He believes he'd let them all down when he promised they would make it through together. Fortunately, his worries were put to rest when he was reunited with them in the epilogue.
* ItsPersonal: His drive to kill both [[ItsPersonalWithTheDragon 'Thalashee]] and the Shipmaster stems from them killing those close to him. 'Thalashee killed Harper and Gabe, while the Shipmaster killed Cameron, Jake, and Christian.
* TheLeader: Of his squad that became the new batch of [=SPARTAN-IVs=].
* LikeBrotherAndSister: Saul looks out for Katherine like an elder sibling and their bond gets stronger when the rest of the squad is killed. Funnily enough, their voice actors are real life siblings.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After the Flood force them to retreat, Saul and Katherine get into a heated argument in which Saul angrily refers to to her as [[YouAreNumber6 "04"]], something he admonished Gabe for doing in ''Generation''. After driving a hurt Katherine away, all Saul can do is silently stand there as he realizes what he'd done.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Despite Katherine's warnings, Saul, determined to bring down the Shipmaster, heads deeper into Halo's inner facilities, unwittingly unleashing the contained Flood within.
* RedOniBlueOni: While he's ''usually'' a level-headed blue, he falls firmly into red when he starts becoming reckless in his drive to finish the fight, leaving Katherine to fill the blue.
* TookALevelInJerkass: His mission to bring down the Shipmaster quickly turns into a single-minded obsession that drives him to disregard the advice of his peers, which leads to the Flood being unleashed and getting several marines killed. His argument with Katherine gives him the JerkassRealization he needed to stop his reckless behavior.

* TheCameo: Briefly appears in the epilogue of ''Omega Halo'', but in a non-speaking role due to his voice actor being unavailable.
* DesignatedPointMan: He specializes in reconnaissance, which naturally makes him the first one into danger.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Jake often focuses on the mission, but even he can't help but make a bet with Christian on their first mission on who can kill more Elites with less ammo. Jake lost.

* TheCameo: He briefly reappears in the epilogue of ''Omega Halo'' to greet Saul in the afterlife.
* TheEngineer: Adept at tinkering and piloting vehicles.
* NumberTwo: Saul quickly appoints him as second-in-command shortly after the team graduates.

The squad's sniper.
----
* ActionGirl: An efficient, lethal soldier befitting the role of a SPARTAN.
* BackForTheFinale: [[spoiler: Appears to Zach (alongside the other Spartan-[=IV=]s) in the afterlife when the former has a near-death experience during ''Hyborean''.]]
* TheCameo: She's briefly seen alongside Grey as he gives a speech on humanity's victory against the Shipmaster in the opening sequence of ''Border War''.
* ColdSniper: She's the squad's distant, withdrawn sniper.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She lost her entire family in the fall of Reach and became a sniper, because they were often separate from their squads.
* DyingMomentOfAwesome: She spends her final moments destroying 'Krudom's plans right in front of him and that humanity's persistence ensured his defeat long ago.
* FantasticRacism: Harbors a great hatred towards the Sangheili (for understandable reasons), which puts her at odds with the Separatists during ''The Last War''. Thankfully, she grows out of this after interacting with 'Nostrom.
* HeroicSacrifice: She sacrifices her life to stop Fleetmaster 'Krudom and end the Third War on Reach.
* InkSuitActor: Her having had sisters and an older brother are likely a reference to her [=VA=]
* TheLancer: To Saul in ''Omega Halo''.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: With Saul, by her own admission, and it's a bond that becomes stronger after losing the rest of their team. Interestingly, their voice actors are real-life siblings.
* MirrorCharacter: Despite their tense relationship, Katherine and Gabe are more alike than they realize. Both suffer from [[DarkAndTroubledPast Dark And Troubled Pasts]] in which they've witnessed their teammates die, and has greatly affected their psyches.
* TheQuietOne: Deconstructed. She isn't very talkative, which doesn't lend well to her communication with her teammates, which is key in a firefight. Were it not for Gabe, [[PoorCommunicationKills she could have been killed on their first assignment.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: The more withdrawn, reserved blue to Saul's increasingly brash and reckless red in ''Omega Halo''.
* ShipperOnDeck: [[spoiler:While appearing to Zach in the afterlife, she voices her approval of Zach's relationship with Denver]].
* SoleSurvivor: She's the last member of her squad by the end of ''Omega Halo''.
* TheSquadette: The only female of the team.
* TheStoic: The deaths of her squad mates have pushed her into this, and doesn't show much emotion. [[NotSoStoic However, this occasionally breaks, especially when she loses Saul.]]

* BackForTheFinale: [[spoiler: Appears to Zach (alongside the other Spartan-[=IV=]s) in the afterlife when the former has a near-death experience during ''Hyborean''.]]
* TheBigGuy: Very easygoing and proficient with heavy weapons.
* {{BFG}}: Gravitates towards heavy weapons like the rocket launcher.
* TheCameo: He briefly appears in the epilogue of ''Omega Halo'' and reunites with Saul in the afterlife, as chipper as ever.
* DemolitionsExpert: Explosives are his specialty.
* NiceGuy: The most overt example. He's outgoing and easily sociable, as well as a source of optimism for his teammates.
* TheHeart: Described as the most "human" of the bunch, being more lively and emotional.

!!!'''Species''': Human
!!!'''Appearances''': ''Generation'' | ''Omega Halo'' (Afterlife)
!!!'''Voiced by''': Morgan Dale
The team's close-combat specialist. He's something of an outlier and more abrasive with his teammates.
----
* BackForTheFinale: [[spoiler: Appears to Zach (alongside the other Spartan-[=IV=]s) in the afterlife when the former has a near-death experience during ''Hyborean''.]]
* BigDamnHeroes: Saves Saul from 'Thalashee when he's about to be killed. Unfortunately, it costs him.
* TheCameo: He appears in the afterlife epilogue of ''Omega Halo'', but due to his voice actor being unavailable, it's in a non-speaking role.
* CoolHelmet: Contrasting the uniform MK-VI helmets of his teammates, Gabe wears his own custom helmet, likely to help viewers visually identify him, as well as highlight his disconnect from the others.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Harper notes that he's had a long history of seeing his teammates die, which has led to him being extremely closed off to those around him.
* DeathByIrony: Gabe, the close-quarters specialist, dies in a close-quarters scenario when, while checking to see if Saul is alright, allows 'Thalashee to sneak behind Gabe and deliver a fatal blow.
* {{Foil}}: He's what Katherine could have become had she closed herself off from others.
* {{Hypocrite}}: For someone who goes on about how Katherine and Christian are weak links who will be detrimental to the squad, his attitude succeeds in damaging morale and causing more tension than they ever did. [[JerkassRealization Fortunately, Saul helps him realize this.]]
* {{Irony}}: He admonishes Katherine for her poor communication and says that she'll be the first one to die if she doesn't shape up. Guess who ''actually'' died first?
* InTheBack: Killed by 'Thalashee when he takes his eyes off him to check on Saul.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: His heart is in the right place when he criticizes his teammates, as he doesn't want them to get themselves killed. But his intentions are marred by his harsh words and his attitude doesn't do him any favors.
* JerkassHasAPoint: He could have put it more tactfully, but Gabe was right in pointing out that Katherine's lack of communication can be a detriment to the squad.
* JerkassRealization: Saul practically has to spell out that his abrasive, pessimistic behavior is damaging the squad's morale.
* TheLancer: He becomes Saul's for the final showdown with 'Thalashee.
* MirrorCharacter: Despite their tense relationship, Gabe and Katherine are more alike than they realize. Both suffer from [[DarkAndTroubledPast Dark And Troubled Pasts]] in which they've witnessed their teammates die, and has greatly affected their psyches.
* NotSoStoic: He usually speaks in an even, emotionless tone but it's clear he's carrying a lot of emotional baggage. This slips through when Saul is chewing him out after Harper's death, but his most notable moment has to be when Saul is captured and Jake believes they could have saved him because they were now Spartans. Gabe disagreed. ''[[SuddenlyShouting Vehemently]]''.
* ShotgunsAreJustBetter: His preferred weapon is a shotgun.
* YouAreNumber6: He refers to his squadmates by their numbers rather than their names. After his JerkassRealization, he starts using their names to emphasize his CharacterDevelopment.

* BrainwashedAndCrazy: [[spoiler:Their augmentations respond to a certain frequency put out by the Lifebringer, converting them into her own army to destroy the [=UNSC=] from within.]]

* BigGood: Subverted. He appears to take on a mentor role for Zach, acting as a confidant he can trust, but it was just a mask for the Lifebringer to keep an eye him.
* CastAsAMask: Tatsumari as Menaias, who was nothing more than a fake identity conjured by the Lifebringer.

A marine who assisted Saul in ''Generation'' and is later promoted to [=ODST=] in ''Omega Halo''. Come ''Brotherhood War'', he's managed to attain the rank of Spartan in the new Spartan-V program, and is the leader of Fireteam Corsair.
----
* AscendedExtra: He initially debuted as a MauveShirt marine who assisted Saul in ''Generation'', but then became a major supporting character from ''Omega Halo'' onward. WordOfGod also confirms that Scott appeared in the original ''Spartans'' as a marine who compliments Saul and Katherine's new armor.
* BadassNormal: He's the only non-Spartan character to survive the initial Flood outbreak and later survives the entire conflict on Instalation-07, something even Saul didn't walk away from.
* BeatThemAtTheirOwnGame: He tries to pull this on Zach in their training simulation. "Try" being the keyword.
* BecameTheirOwnAntithesis: While under the Lifebringer’s control, Scott becomes intolerant and dictative against his subordinates, [[BadBoss going so far as to threaten and physically strike Silva]] when she speaks out against him or questions their orders; these traits gravely contrast with the considerate and trustworthy individual he’d established himself as prior.
* BreakoutCharacter: He goes from a named extra, to a major supporting character in the series, even landing the lead role of ''Final Farewell''.
* TheCameo: In ''The Last War'', a nameless Marine was delivering a eulogy at Commander Grey's funeral. Jacob retconned it so that the Marine in question was Scott. WordOfGod also confirms that Scott appeared in the original ''Spartans'' as a marine who compliments Saul and Katherine's new armor.
* ADayInTheLimelight: He's the central focus of ''Final Farewell'', which sets up the Spartan-V program and his eventual ascension to Spartan status.
* DefeatEqualsFriendship: Downplayed, as he was already affable with Zach upon first meeting, but losing to the veteran Spartan-III in a practice exercise solidifies his respect for him.
* {{Expy}}: Of Sergeant Johnson, being a BadassNormal sergeant who can hang with the Spartans, and Buck, being a battle-hardened [=ODST=] who later becomes a Spartan.

* AFatherToHisMen: Especially towards Corsair. Although he disapproves of Hadley executing surrendering Reformist in cold blood, he goes out of his way to cover for him.
* TheLeader: Of Fireteam Corsair. Taken a step further when he's made ''Spartan Master'' by the end of ''Hyborean''.
* TheLancer: To Saul during ''Omega Halo'', serving as the Spartan's liaison while maintaining a comradery that had Saul depend on Scott. Scott also becomes one to Zach in ''Brotherhood War'', as the reliable, no-nonsense leader of Corsair who often follows Zach's lead out of respect for his experience.
* MauveShirt: He's introduced in ''Generation'' as a reliable marine who aids Saul in his pursuit of 'Thalashee.
* OnlyMostlyDead: He's put in critical condition by Banshee fire, but manages to hold on just long enough for Grey to put him a cryo-pod, saving his life. He shows up again alive and well in ''The Last War'', delivering the eulogy for Grey's funeral.
* SergeantRock: A firm, reliable veteran of the Second War who's often an ally to the Spartans, and now walks among them as squad leader of Fireteam Corsair.
* SuperSoldier: As a Spartan, but this is a given.
* TookALevelInBadass: He takes many over the course of the series, going from [[RedShirt marine]], to [[MauveShirt [=ODST=]]], to ''[[SuperSoldier Spartan]]''.

* HiddenDepths: She's the only one of Corsair who came dangerously close to beating Zach in the training simulation, implying her skills outstrip even [[TheLeader Scott]] and [[TheBigGirl Chen]].

Corsair's weapons expert and heavy hitter.
----
* AxeCrazy: By the time of ''Hyborean'', Chen's aggressiveness has turned to bloodlust, cackling with glee
* BewareTheSillyOnes: While a BoisterousBruiser with a penchant for combat, Chen displays a serious side when holding up a Reformist who'd recently killed a fellow Spartan-V. She becomes a '''lot''' worse while under the Lifebringer's control.
* TheBigGirl: She has an aptitude for heavy weapons and is described by Guardian to be strong enough to punch holes through bunkers.
* {{BFG}}: Chen likes to use heavy weapons, as per her role in the squad as their weapons specialist.
* BloodKnight: Chen's the most battle-hungry of her team, busting down walls or mowing down hostiles with glee.
* BoisterousBruiser: She's loud, proud, and strong, and will make sure you know it, too.
* BruiserWithASoftCenter: Strip away the BloodKnight outer layer and Chen is surprisingly big-hearted, especially towards her teammates. [[spoiler:Best shown when she's softly comforting Hadley after he suffers a mental breakdown at remembering everything he did under the Lifebringer's influence.]]
* CoolBigSis: Towards Hadley. She's quick to snap at him whenever he mouths off, not unlike an older sibling reining in their younger brother. [[spoiler:When they're freed of the Lifebringer's control, Chen is the first to comfort Hadley when he breaks down from the trauma of remembering everything he did.]]
* DemolitionsExpert: More specifically, she ''is'' the explosive. Who needs C4 when you can blow down walls with your bare fists?
* GenderBlenderName: Downplayed; the name Mako is currently known to be masculine, but used to feminine when first conceptualized.
* GroundPound: Chen loves using this thanks to her armor ability.

----
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Hadley often comes across as a tryhard, but that doesn't make him any less deadly than his comrades, [[spoiler:nor does it mean he's particularly merciful towards terrorists.]]
* ColdSniper: [[spoiler:Under the Lifebringer's control, he's a lot less chatty and speaks in a chillingly detached tone, most notable while he's lining a shot on Guardian.]]
* FantasticRacism: He's not an out and out racist, but he holds very strong opinions of superiority towards the unaugmented and doesn't display much empathy for the Reformation's outer colony hardships, believing they're the ones making life difficult for themselves. This mostly stems from his inner colony upbringing on Mars.
* FriendlySniper: Zig-zagged. While outgoing, he's not the nicest of people, mostly towards marines, but he gets along with his team swimmingly and eventually comes to respect Zach, albeit begrudgingly after being served a large helping of HumblePie.
* IAmAMonster: [[spoiler:After being freed of the Lifebringer's control, Hadley's immediate response is this]].
* LargeHam: For the squad's sniper, he's not very subtle. [=LaughingBlock=] gives him a very intense and cocky intonation when he speaks.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:Every Spartan cured suffers this in some manner, but Hadley takes it the absolute hardest, outright screaming in horror as he remembers every horrific act he committed for the Lifebringer.]]
* TheSmartGuy: He's the team's technician and knows his way around decryption.
* SociopathicSoldier: He exhibits shades of this when fondly reminiscing putting down a enemy combatant in graphic detail to his teammates, and later when he executes a Radical Reformist in cold-blood after the latter had already surrendered.

* DeathByIrony: [[spoiler:As a turncoat who sold out his entire race just to destroy the [=UNSC=], it's all too fitting that he died at the hands of Garrett, who himself was a traitor to the [=UNSC=], but always loyal to humanity.]]
* DefectorFromDecadence: [[spoiler:He, like Garrett, also saw the [=UNSC=] as corrupt for all its past atrocities, but unlike Garrett, he willingly and knowingly served the Lifebringer and enslaved humanity to make it happen.]]

* EvilAllAlong: [[spoiler:After supposedly being cured of the Lifebringer's brainwashing, Galloway murders Logan and turns on Garrett, revealing he was never brainwashed to begin with and had, in fact, willingly served the Lifebringer the entire time.]]
* HeroKiller: [[spoiler:He kills series veteran Logan upon showing his true colors.]]
* HeroWorship: He openly admires Zach's feats and record, to the point that much of the [=Spartan-Vs'=] training and development is derived from the [=Spartan-III=] program.
* MrExposition: Justified. He's the Spartan Master and thus, knows a good deal about the [=Spartan-Vs=]. It also helps establish the program's background.
* NotBrainwashed: [[spoiler:He's revealed to be the only Spartan who was spared by the Lifebringer's mind-altering augmentations because he served her ''willingly''.]]
* SecretKeeper: Knows of Zach's past as a [=Spartan-III=].
* ShadowArchetype: For Garrett. [[spoiler:He's what Garrett could have become had he allowed his hatred for the [=UNSC=] to override his humanity. While both saw the [=UNSC=] as corrupt and resorted to siding with the Lifebringer to bring it down, Garrett had no idea of the Lifebringer's true intentions and saw the error of his ways while Galloway was in on the plot the whole time and had no regrets enslaving his own species if it meant the [=UNSC=] fell. Unlike Garrett, who was shaped by combat and has the experience to boot, Galloway relied on his quality armor and augmentations to stay ahead, showing he only had a surface-level understanding of what it meant to be a Spartan, while Garrett, for all his faults, remained loyal to humanity in spite of his extremism.]]
* SmallRoleBigImpact: Despite being TheDragon, Galloway only receives one major scene across all of his appearances in the Lifebringer Saga: his murder of Logan and TheReveal that he had been a ''willing'' servant of the Lifebringer the entire time. The former brings Zach to his lowest point emotionally and the latter makes him into a ShadowArchetype for Garrett, despite the two only sharing this one scene together.

* BigDamnHeroes: Twice. He shows up to prevent the Shipmaster from killing Saul (and is ultimately the one to administer the kill shot) and destroys Humble Guardian as he's threatening Katherine.
* BigGood: Takes over the position after Harper's death.
* TheCameo: He briefly appears alongside Katherine at the beginning of ''Border War'', giving a speech on humanity's victory against the Shipmaster.

* EnemyMine: He tries to invoke an alliance with the Shipmaster in light of the Flood being unleashed, but the Shipmaster instead opts to activate the ring.
* AFatherToHisMen: A much stricter and more gruff example than Harper, but still a caring leader who wants to keep his troops alive. He even becomes Katherine's father figure in the same vein Harper was to Saul, so his death in ''The Last War'' hits her hard.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: When the Flood are unleashed and start overwhelming his forces, he deems the operation too risky to continue and opts to retreat to gather reinforcements. He's ultimately convinced to stay when the Shipmaster announces his intentions to fire Halo.

* TheCaptain: Of his own starship, the ''Flying Forward''.
* CharacterDeath: [[spoiler:Killed when the mind-controlled [=Spartan-Vs=] turn against the UNSC]].
* HyperCompetentSidekick: When serving under Grey, though Grey himself was still a capable leader. WordOfGod has noted that Braxton was a very competent officer in his own right, enough to eventually reach the rank of commander and become TheCaptain of his own ship.
* LightIsGood: Wears bright, pristine colored armor and is one of the good guys.
* MauveShirt: He earns enough characterization for it to mean something when he's killed off in his third appearance.
* MrExposition: Justified. Since Grey is removed from the action, he has to relay developments in the plot to him.
* NumberTwo: He was Grey's adjutant aboard the ''Heart of Defiance''. After Grey's death, he took over as captain until he was reassigned to the ''Flying Forward''.

Theresa planned to be back home in time to celebrate her sister's twenty-fifth birthday. [[spoiler:Tragically, her sister was killed by a drunk driver sometime between "Lifebringer" and "Brotherhood: War", during which Theresa was still in cryo sleep.]]
* {{Deuteragonist}}: She's the secondary character of ''Lifebringer'' and continues the role in ''Brotherhood War''.
* JumpedAtTheCall: When hearing of the new Spartan-V program, Denver is quick to put herself forward as a candidate. [[spoiler:However, the results came back negative, meaning she was incompatible with the augmentations, much to her disappointment.]]
* LoveInterest: Zach starts developing feelings for her at the start of ''Brotherhood War'' and it's heavily implied she feels the same way and isn't above teasing him about it.
* OldSoldier: Chronologically, at the time of ''Brotherhood War'', she's in her 40s, but still maintains her younger physical age of 30-something through cryo sleep.
* OlderThanTheyLook: She was 43 when she was assigned to the ''Homeward Bound'', but states that still looks a decade younger.
* SoleSurvivor: Of the Marines stranded on Cradle.
* TheTeamNormal: Later in ''Brotherhood War'', Denver, despite being found incompatible to receive the augmentations, is promoted by Logan and Menaias due to her experience on Cradle, and given a position alongside the [=Spartan-Vs=] in fighting the Reformists.
* VocalEvolution: Due to changing voice actors between installments, Denver sounds noticeably different in ''Brotherhood War''.

----
* DefiantToTheEnd: Moments before his death, Hugo assures his men that the [=UNSC=] will have their vengeance against the Radical Reformation. His last words before Isaka kills him is that he'll see her in Hell.
* AFatherToHisMen: Puts the safety of his men above his own, pleading that Isaka and her reformists spare them.
* HeKnowsTooMuch: Inverted. Nyla believes Mannix when he says he doesn't know what the Reformation was doing on Cradle, but decides to kill him to keep it that way.
* HeroicSacrifice: Offers Isaka and her reformists his life in exchange for the lives of his men, an offer Isaka accepts with the promise that Mannix's men will be free to leave the area.
** SenselessSacrifice: Unfortunately, once Mannix's men have [[ExactWords left said-area]], Isaka sends Garrett to kill them to ensure their silence.
* MrExposition: The first to provide crucial information regarding Nyla Isaka, the leader of the Radical Reformation.
* ProperlyParanoid: Studied Nyla Isaka due to a distrust towards politicians. Turns out said-distrust was well-placed.

* AscendedExtra: Was briefly mentioned during Chronicler177's fan mail series prior to ''Aftermath''.
* BadassNormal: [=ODSTs=] aren't the second best special forces branch for nothing, and his willingness to defy the Lifebringer by helping citizens escape on his own pushes him into this territory.
* BigDamnHeroes: He saves Carla from a Centurion after it spots her trying to flee the city.
* DeathByIrony: Played tragically in that [[spoiler:Scott, who may have held feelings for Emily, Adrian's late sister, is the one to gun Adrian down]].
* DefiantToTheEnd: [[spoiler:He tragically meets his end in a shootout against Fireteam Corsair, but he goes down fighting.]]
* MeaningfulName: Knight is a rather fitting name for someone helping oppressed citizens, like a knight in shining armor.
* NiceGuy: In spite of the Spartans having orders to kill unaugmented [=UNSC=] personnel on sight, Knight still opts to help the beleaguered citizens escape the city. Even when Carla refuses his offer, he tells her where to meet him if she changes her mind.
* ShaggyDogStory: [[spoiler:He and the civilians he attempted to evacuate end up mercilessly gunned down by Fireteam Corsair]].

* TheCavalry: He and his squadron provided much-needed air support for Zach and Denver, driving back a brigade of Reformation armor.
* CharacterDeath: He's killed in the finale of ''Hyborean'', shortly after his Pelican is shot down by the Spartans.
* EnemyMine: He was initially reluctant to work with Albrecht, a Reformist grunt, to escape Seattle after six months of their respective sides being locked in bloody conflict, but he eventually warmed up to him after recognizing that their differences ultimately mean nothing compared to the Lifebringer.
* FireForgedFriends: With the Reformist Albrecht. Their experiences in ''Zulu Flight'' made them into good friends by the time of ''Hyborean'', and almost always seen together.
* MauveShirt: ''Zulu Flight'' fleshes him out beyond his brief appearance in ''Brotherhood War'', confirming he's one of the non-augmented [=UNSC=] survivors of the Lifebringer's uprising. 628* TheBusCameBack: After an extended absence, Logan makes a surprise return for ''Brotherhood War''.
* CoolOldGuy: He's mellowed out considerably since retiring from active service and is around 80 years old by the time of ''Brotherhood War''.
* DefiantCaptive: When captured by Elites near the end to ''The Last War'', Logan continually defies his captors directly to their faces.
* AFatherToHisMen: Logan evidently cares for his team, to the extent that he overlooked Zach being a [=Spartan-III=] and kept the fact a secret from the other members of Phoenix.
* HeroicBSOD: He falls into it deep after ''Brotherhood War'', having watched the [=UNSC=] he'd spent much of his life fighting for be torn down within a single night. Tired from all the fighting, Logan all but gives up in ''Aftermath''.
* JerkassHasAPoint: While he was being overtly abrasive about it, he was right to point out that the Reformation was the reason humanity is now under the Lifebringer's thumb.
* TheLeader: The firm head of Phoenix Team.

* SecretKeeper: Only he knew of Zach's past as a [=Spartan-III=] prior to the events of ''The Last War''.
* TookALevelInJerkass: The loss of the [=UNSC=] drives Logan into a depression, causing him to lash out at everyone around him and stubbornly refuse help from the Reformation, in spite of the larger threat of the Lifebringer. Fortunately, he grows out of it.

* CruelAndUnusualDeath: Suffers this fate at the hands of 'Krudom's disruptor weapon, which disrupts human particles at a cellular level, effectively disintegrating them.
* GadgeteerGenius: He often constructs armor and weapon modifications to improve the team's combat efficiency. Zach's cloaking device, for instance, was his handiwork.
* TheSmartGuy: He's Phoenix Team's go-to guy for hacking, decryption, and translation of intel.

* HeroicSacrifice: Dies covering Katherine and Tanner's escape.

!!!'''Voiced by''': Jacob Whittington
The former Monitor of Installation-07. After losing his ring, he's repurposed into an A.I. for the [=UNSC=]. He also holds the distinction of being the most recurring character in the series.
----
* AIIsACrapshoot: Downplayed. He's technically still doing what he was created for, maintaining the installation and ensuring activation procedures are followed, but is suffering from degrees of rampancy, which was common for Monitors after thousands of years of isolation.
* AncientKeeper: The caretaker of Installation-07 for thousands of years.
* AntiVillain: He's just following his programming, but undergoes a HeelFaceTurn later on.
* BigBadWannabe: Upon learning the humans' intent to destroy his installation, he immediately sets about trying to stop them. But since the ring's Sentinel defenses had been destroyed years prior, he's ultimately incapable of hampering their efforts and is dispatched by Grey in short order.
* BigDamnHeroes: Provides crucial aid to Zach and Denver in imprisoning the Lifebringer on Cradle. [[spoiler:Pulls off two more near the ending to ''Brotherhood: War'', first by saving Zach from the Lifebringer's clutches, and later when Zach, Denver, and Logan are surrounded by General Garrett, the Radical Reformation, the Lifebringer and her mindwashed [=Spartan-Vs=]]].
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: For a time, he's rendered subservient to the Lifebringer, one of his creators, and ends up defecting to her side. Zach is able to bring him back to his senses and finally kick his adherence to protocol.
* CallingTheOldManOut: He gives Logan a severe tongue lashing after Zach leaves to find Garrett.
-->'''Guardian''': You're letting him down, Logan! You're his hero and [[BrokenPedestal you've let him down]] ''so hard''! You're so stuck in your own ditch that you can't see how badly he needs you right now! [[GetAholdOfYourselfMan Snap out of it!]] I'm sick of your shit! 709-->'''Logan''': I--
-->'''Guardian''': And don't you bring up age again, because I've got a hundred thousand years on you. You had your chance to be there for him, you blew it! Now he's got to avoid making ''your'' mistakes.
* CharacterDevelopment: When we first see him in ''Omega Halo'', Guardian is a LawfulStupid, protocol abiding Monitor in the same vein as Guilty Spark. However, after losing his installation and being repurposed as an Artificial Intelligence for the [=UNSC=], Guardian mellows out and becomes an ally to Katherine, and later bonds with Zach, mirroring the relationship between Master Chief and Cortana. His time with Zach allows him to kicks his adherence to protocol and he turns on his creators, bringing his development full circle.
* DeadpanSnarker: He gains a dry wit and a sharper tongue after spending enough time with humans.
* TheDragon: He briefly becomes the Lifebringer's upon being reprogrammed, but Zach helps him snap out of it.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: It's a stretch to call him evil in ''Omega Halo'', but his tone of voice depicts genuine bewilderment to why the Reclaimers would want to destroy Halo, despite the whole wipe out all life in the galaxy bit.
* {{Expy}}: Of 343 Guilty Spark, but only in ''Omega Halo'' where he's suffering from rampancy and his strict adherence to protocol. Once he's repurposed into a [=UNSC=] A.I., he acts similarly to Cortana for Katherine and later Zach.
* FightingFromTheInside: Minutes after being brought under the Lifebringer's control, Guardian narrowly avoids killing Zach in their first encounter when, after sending Zach off a ledge, opens a portal below that sends Zach to safety.
* GrandTheftPrototype: [[spoiler: Takes control of the Centurion prototype in order to save Zach from the Lifebringer during ''Brotherhood: War''. He continues to use this body afterward]].
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: At first a neutral, somewhat antagonistic character in ''Omega Halo'' but later becomes an ally to the [=UNSC=] in ''The Last War''. In ''Lifebringer'', he defects to the Lifebringer out of loyalty to his creators, but Zach is able to bring him back, and this time it sticks.
* HeroicSacrifice: Ends up TakingTheBullet to save Zach from the Lifebringer. Later subverted, as he only lost his physical body but survived.
* HumanityIsInfectious: He starts the series like any other Monitor who strictly adheres to protocol, but spending years alongside humans leads him to think for himself and pick up some of their traits, like a sense of humor.
* IHatePastMe: "Hate" may be too strong a word, but Guardian does not look upon his behavior as a Monitor too fondly, at times sounding ashamed.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: Zach helps Guardian break free from the Lifebringer through this. [[spoiler:Guardian later tries to pull one off on the mindwashed Fireteam Corsair, but to no avail]].
* LawfulStupid: Like his fellow Monitors, the Flood being unleashed means the rings must be fired and that's the only option. Naturally, this puts him into conflict with the humans.
* MeaningfulRename: Upon shedding his loyalty to the Forerunner and adherence to protocol, he rebrands himself as just "Guardian" to show his individuality.
* {{Narrator}}: He often narrates the backstory and sets up the major figures across multiple installments.
* NotQuiteDead: Grey blasts him to bits with a [=SPARTAN=] Laser, like Chief did to Guilty Spark. But like Guilty Spark, this isn't the last we see of him, as he continues to appear throughout the series.
* ObliviouslyEvil: He doesn't quite understand why the humans would take umbrage with the galaxy being cleansed of all life to stop the Flood.
* ShipperOnDeck: He's quick to point out that Zach may be forming romantic feelings for Denver, and just as quick in making some playful jabs.
* ShotgunsAreJustBetter: [[spoiler: After taking control of the Centurion prototype, Guardian uses its shotgun from then on]].
%%* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: As the Lifebringer undergoes a VillainousBreakdown from learning Zach is still alive and headed for her, Guardian tells her how badly she messed up going so far as to say he pities her
* WellIntentionedExtremist: His ultimate goal is to stop the Flood, but his method of doing so results in mass genocide of the galaxy, thus starving them of potential hosts. Fortunately, he grows out of this.
