Following the defeat of the Sith, the Galactic Republic enjoyed a centuries-long period of peace and prosperity known as the High Republic era, where both it and the Jedi Order were said to be at its peak. Unfortunately, various threats still existed that would terrorize the galaxy, leading to the eventual decline of the Republic and the rise of Darth Sidious.

One of two Supreme Chancellors 150 years before the Great Disaster, holding office jointly with Chancellor Mollo.
----
* AbdicateTheThrone: Kyong relinquishes her position as Supreme Chancellor to not only reduce her value as a hostage to the Path of the Open Hand (and making Axel useless as their puppet), but also potentially mend her strained relationship with Axel.
* ActionPolitician: While she's not as proactive as Mollo, she reveals in Cataclysm she had some military training. After she relinquishes her Chancellorship to not only mend her strained relationship with Axel, but also reduce her value as a hostage to the Path of the Open Hand, she fights with the Jedi and Republic sympathizers on Dalna as a private citizen.
* BigGood: She serves as this in Phase II of The High Republic, leading the Republic in a tumultuous era of pioneering, sharing the role with Mollo.
* ContrastingReplacementCharacter: She contrasts with Lina Soh in quite a few ways. Both are Supreme Chancellors who have a son that personally has some issues with his mother's political status. Lina's son Kitrep is a ShrinkingViolet who only resents his mother's status because it indirectly gets him a lot of undesired attention, but their relationship with each other is fairly stable and Lina tries to take some time from her career to be there for Kitrep. In contrast, Kyong's relationship with Axel is much more strained because - from Axel's point of view - she's constantly putting her political career before him, and this results in Axel getting himself into all sorts of trouble.
* Foil:
** To Mollo. While Mollo is the more proactive of the two and likes interacting with regular citizens instead of politicians, Greylark is a more formal Chancellor who chooses to operate on Coruscant and is more comfortable with high-level diplomatic functions.
** To the Mother of the Path of the Open Hand. Both of them serve as maternal figures to Axel in some way. Kyong is Axel's mother by blood, but has become emotionally distant from him as a result of of her putting her career as Chancellor first. Meanwhile, the Mother is a cult leader who presents herself as a nurturing figure and seems to treat Axel with more respect than Kyong does. By the end of Cataclysm, they also differ in regards to their true nature. When Kyong learns that Axel has been roped into the Path as a result of their strained relationship, she decides to come to Dalna at his request, but also steps down as Chancellor to mend their relationship. When the Mother hears of this, she drop all pretense of caring for Axel since he's lost his political value.
* ParentsAsPeople: Her relationship with her son Axel is extremely rocky, especially after her husband's death. Not helping matters is that as far as Axel could tell, she always puts her political career before him, and when she does pay attention to him, it somehow ends up being connected to that, such as getting him to pose for photo ops or getting him to attend a political school. Unfortunately, this results in not only Axel leading a life of debauchery, but also him getting roped into the Path of the Open Hand. When Kyong realizes how much damage her neglect of Axel's personal needs has caused, she willfully relinquishes her chancellorship so she can repair her relationship with him.
* TheStoic: Compared to Mollo, she is far less emotive and maintains an image of calm dignity. This is one of the main issues between her and Axel, who believes that she cared more about maintaining her image than actually showing real emotion, particularly in regards to his father's death.
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: Aside from her strained relationship with Axel, she was very well-respected as a Chancellor thanks to her co-Chancellorship with Orlen Mollo allowing each other to cover the other's blind spots. After the Battle of Dalna, in which Kyong deliberately relinquished her Chancellorship so the Path of the Open Hand couldn't make her into their political puppet, many in the Republic beg for her to reinstate herself just because they feel lost without her.
* YouShouldHaveDiedInstead: On the first year of her husband's death, Axel got drunk and ended up saying Kyong should have died in his father's place, as she had been the one to send them on the mission that resulted in his death. Although he regretted saying it and has apologized many times, Axel believes that she will never forgive him for it.

One of two Supreme Chancellors 150 years before the Great Disaster, holding office jointly with Chancellor Kyong Greylark.
----
* ActionPolitician: He is not afraid to jump into the action if necessary, as evidenced by having one of his guards toss him a blaster and immediately opening fire with it at the bounty hunters who crash Xiri and Phan-tu's wedding while seeking Axel Greylark.
* BigGood: He serves as this in Phase II of The High Republic, leading the Republic in a tumultuous era of pioneering, sharing the role with Kyong Greylark. After Greylark relinquishes her Chancellorship to deliberately lower her value as a hostage to the Path of the Open Hand, he becomes the sole Chancellor.
* Foil: To Greylark. While Greylark operates from Coruscant, Mollo is more proactive in carrying out the Republic's policies, even working directly with the Jedi on the Galactic Frontier. This is best shown when he's left behind to negotiate with the royals of Eiram and E'ronoh, where he's uncomfortable sitting around at a fancy meeting and thinks about how he would rather be interacting with farmers or other working-class people and finding out what their needs are. When Kyong announces that she's relinquishing Chancellorship, Orlen admits to how the two of them complemented each other's weaknesses and he feels lost without her.
* MrFixit: In Cataclysm, he's shown to also have some expertise in repairing things, as he takes the initiative to repair a damaged communications buoy by himself when the leading royals of the twin planets are too busy arguing.

The Supreme Chancellor at the time of the Great Disaster. Lina was elected chancellor on the promise of guiding the Republic through a number of "great works" to unite the galaxy closer together than it ever has been before, including the isolated worlds of the Outer Rim.
----
* ArtificialLimbs: The Eye of Darkness reveals that she lost a leg during the Nihil attack on the Republic Fair and has replaced it with a prosthetic.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: For as genuine and honest as she is, Lina's barely contained wrath towards the Nihil for their crimes is enough to make Jedi Master Avar Kriss glad to be halfway across the galaxy and not witnessing it in person.
* BigGood: She's this for the Republic, ushering in a new golden age for the government after centuries of fighting for survival and rebuilding following the last war against the Sith.
* EmpathyPet: Matari and Voru are her twin targons, giant lion-like creatures. They are empathic as well, and often reflect the mood of Lina, with their ears notably flattening into a threat display when the chancellor orders every single Nihil brought to justice.
* MamaBear: When her son Kitrep is trapped in the Occlusion Zone, she has even more reason to bring the Nihil to justice.
* OneSteveLimit: Averted. She shares her name with Lina Graf. Considering Lina Graf was created by Cavan Scott, a writer for The High Republic, this is either a case of Lina being a common name or NamedAfterSomeoneFamous.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: Unlike Palpatine, not only is her benevolence completely genuine, but she's more than happy to work alongside the Jedi.
* UniversallyBelovedLeader: Aside from some malcontents like the Nihil, Lina Soh is beloved by more or less the entire Republic.

The senator of Serenno, who serves as a spokesperson for most of the Outer Rim during high-level meetings with Chancellor Lina Soh.
----
* CommanderContrarian: An understandable one: a number of the plans and options proposed in meetings he attends could have serious negative consequences for those he represents. After the Great Disaster, the shutting down of hyperspace lanes in the Outer Rim could lead to a number of planets starving without their needed food imports, with Noor arguing that could be more catastrophic than another emergence. He never opposes anything out of a petty reason and is truly just trying to ensure that his people are represented.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While he may be antagonistic and rude, Noor's primary concern is doing right by his constituents and is under a considerable amount of stress as the Outer Rim's representative.

The representative of Sullust, Tia has ties to the [=SoroSuub=] Corporation and is an advocate of the Republic creating a Defense Force Program, making him a political adversary of Chancellor Lina Soh.
----
* GoodAllAlong: The Jedi are suspicious of him due to his desire for a larger military and stated opposition to the Republic's use of the Jedi to combat the Nihil and other threats. His mysterious meeting with a scientist during the Valo fair raises further suspicions, but in the end he turns out to be sincere in his desire to protect the Republic and actually likes the Jedi, simply believing that it is both unfair and unrealistic to entrust the entire defense of the Republic to them and the Defense Coalition.
* JerkassHasAPoint: While he might seem antagonistic towards the Jedi and not want them being used to combat the Nihil (which isn't actually true), it's poignant to know that the Jedi are supposed to be peacekeepers first and not an active military force (and this is one of the things that led to the Jedi Order's downfall two centuries later). His point that they can't rely solely on the Jedi and may need a conventional military force is further reinforced when the Nihil start using the Nameless against the Jedi, yet they have no effect on non-Force users.
* OhCrap: Upon learning that Mantessa Chekkat's energy draining device is powered by recainium, Tia is horrified and demands she turn it off due to the radiation the banned substance puts out. He is further dismayed to learn she believed he would be interested in using it against the Jedi, when he in fact considers it a terrible threat to them that should be buried.

The admiral in command of the Emissary-class cruiser Third Horizon, the flagship of a small peacekeeping fleet operating in conjunction with the Starlight Beacon in the Outer Rim.
----
* BeCarefulWhatYouWishFor: He was glad to finally be commanding a larger Republic fleet going into battle against a comparable Nihil force, as he believed he and other Republic officers needed the experience fighting such larger battles in case other large-scale threats to the peace emerged in the future. Kronara quickly regretted that thinking when the battle dissolved into the Nihil utilizing ruthless and unorthodox tactics that virtually no other opponent would ever use.
* SupportingLeader: He typically is in command of any Republic forces that work alongside the Jedi protagonists against the Nihil.

A member of the Republic Administration Corps and a veteran of the civil war on her homeworld of Soika. Velko was assigned to Starlight Beacon to serve as Rodor's aide. After Starlight was destroyed by the Nihil, Velko joined the Republic Defense Coalition and was given command of the Longbeam-class cruiser Gios alongside Jedi Master Keeve Trennis.
----
* AudienceSurrogate: She was designed by the authors to be the audience's main viewpoint character into the workings of Starlight Beacon with the Starlight short stories, being someone who was newly assigned to the station and someone who had never previously worked with the Jedi before.
* BackInTheSaddle: She initially became an aide on Starlight Beacon as a way to make amends for the horrors she experienced during the Soikan civil war. After the destruction of Starlight Beacon, she's acting in a military capacity once again to combat the threat of the Nihil in the Occlusion Zone.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Her experiences during the civil war on her homeworld were what drove her to join the Republic, as she wanted to help do good in the galaxy after witnessing so many horrific things during the war.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: When she learns that the Nihil have a Nameless with them on Ballum, she wastes no time ordering Keeve and Santar to retreat.
* UncertainDoom: Her fate during the destruction of Starlight Beacon was initially unknown, until she was one of the few survivors who was rescued from the wreckage of the station.

A Pathfinder official and member of the San Tekka clan 150 years before the Great Disaster, who plotted a hyperspace route to a planet on the edge of Wild Space.
----
* HeKnowsTooMuch: Radicaz "Sunshine" Dobbs murders him when he not only doesn't have any jewels on him to pay him with, it's implied Sunshine also killed Alonso because he thinks they both discovered the same planet independent of each other, and didn't want anyone else knowing any information about that planet's location (plus, Sunshine was also recently inducted into the Path of the Open Hand, which has a lot of interest in claiming Force artifacts).
* SmallRoleBigImpact: He only appears in one chapter of Path of Deceit, but his murder in said chapter implicitly ensures that the Nameless's homeworld is undiscovered by the Jedi Order for a long time.

The son of Chancellor Kyong Greylark. During the Eiram-E'ronoh war, Kyong sends him to represent the Republic's interest while investigating an assassination attempt against the planets' heirs.
----
* TheAtoner: Following the Battle of Dalna, he decides to make things right by continuing to follow through with his prison sentence after years of not being willing to face the consequences of his own actions.
* BeingEvilSucks: As he spends more time with Binnot and the Mother, he starts to regret being involved with the Path, starting with him believing he had killed Gella in a dogfight. After the Mother and Binnot reveal they don't actually care about him, and the latter tries to make him kill a young Path member who doesn't want to fight, he decides he's had enough.
* GettingSickDeliberately: While imprisond on Pipyyr, he fakes being a sick in a way that genuinely convinces Gella to have him transferred to a lower-security prison on his home planet of Coruscant. This includes getting his body to act ill and repeatedly vomit, which the Pipyyr prison medic presumed was a result of him being kept in an environment he wasn't naturally acclimated to (he was a human raised in a high-altitude environment being moved to a deep sea prison). After being rescued by Binnot, he notes that he frequently did this as a kid to get out of boring political meetings with his mother.
* HeelFaceTurn: After realizing that neither the Mother nor Binnot actually care for his well-being after Kyong announces that she's relinquishing her Chancellorship, and Binnot tries to make Axel prove he's part of the Path by killing a young cultist who was reluctant to fight after losing his mother, Axel turns on the Path for good, frees Gella from imprisonment and fights alongside her and his mother on Dalna.
* TheMole: He is secretly an agent of the Path of the Open Hand, going by the alias "Chaos".
* Manchild: He's 30 years old, but he's also the spoiled brat who constantly gets into trouble even into adulthood only to get bailed out by his Supreme Chancellor mother and and refuses to take responsibility for his personal failings. Part of this is a result of lingering trauma from his father's death and a perception that Kyong is always putting her career before him. CharacterDevelopment eventually sees him grow beyond this.
* NeverMyFault: Axel's biggest vice is his unwillingness to own up to his personal failings, even when he develops a guilty conscience. This changes after Kyong unexpectedly relinquishes her chancellorship and ruins the Mother's plans to make Axel her puppet, realizing he might have tempted her into walking to her death. After seeing the worst of the Path, he starts to make things right.
* PutOnAPrisonBus: The end of Convergence sees him arrested and jailed on a Republic PrisonShip for his role in further fanning the flames of the Eiram-E'ronoh war. By Cataclysm, he's been transferred to a high-security prison on Pipyyr before being transferred out. At the end of that novel, he willingly accepts his continued incarceration in a prison on Coruscant.
* SilverSpoonTroublemaker: He is well-known for getting into trouble in the shadier districts of Coruscant and being a general embarrassment to his mother.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: He finds himself in a strained team-up with Jedi Knight Gella Natai during the investigation in the Eiram system, with Axel not only having a grudge against the Jedi due to blaming them for his father's death, but finding her to be a painfully self-righteous do-gooder, while Gella sees him as an out-of-touch rich kid.
* UpperClassTwit: He's the son of a Supreme Chancellor, but he spends most of his time indulging himself and getting into trouble throughout Coruscant. As a result, Kyong has to pay his bail whenever he gets arrested. However, there's a lot more to him than he lets on.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Part of the reason he's very irresponsible is that he doesn't feel Kyong pays much attention to him, especially after his father's death, and any attention she does give him is tied to her political career. This is also part of the reason he goes to the Eiram system on her behalf. This strained relationship also made him vulnerable to Binnot proselytizing him into the Path's graces.

----
* AccidentalMurder: When infiltrating the Lightening Crash, Avon encounters Klinith Da. Panicking and angry over Da's role in the destruction of the Steady Wing, .
* TheApprentice: She is studying under the famed Shani scientist Glenna Kip on Haileap due to their similar interests in crystals and the Force.
* DisappearedDad: Avon's father abandoned the family to chase his dream of being a hyperspace route explorer in Wild Space.
* FamousAncestor: Has become one to the Starros family by the period of the Imperial Era due to her work with crystals and mysterious disappearance.
* GoodIsNotSoft: Avon has a strong moral code, is loyal to the Republic, and respects the Jedi. However, she has no issues with manipulating people and friends for her own ends, using Deva to kill Nihil, and plotting the death of hundreds because they work for the Nihil.
* HatesTheirParent: After her mother's true allegiances are revealed and Avon is kidnapped by her to live amongst the Nihil, she grows to hate Ghirra immensely and despises everything her mom does and is working towards. This is enough for her to temporarily change her surname to "Sunvale" (in reference to the late Jedi Master Douglas Sunvale) as an act of dissociation.
* IHaveYourDaughter: She was kidnapped once prior to the series in order to manipulate her mother, but Avon's uncles rescued her quickly and killed the kidnappers.
* KidnappedScientist: During Mission to Disaster, she is captured alongside many other children during a Nihil raid. When Kara Xoo takes notice of her brilliant scientific skills for her age during her escape attempts, Xoo appoints her to be Doctor Zadina Mkampa's assistant as an alternative to selling her to slavers.
* LegallyDead: She was officially claimed to have died in the destruction of Starlight Beacon. However, Ghirra secretly arranged for her escape and she has been living with her in the Occlusion Zone for the past year.
* LikeMotherUnlikeDaughter: Her mother is a manipulative politician who secretly sides with the Nihil for power. Avon is a friendly and open scientist who befriends Jedi.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: While their prisoner and Doctor Mkampa's assistant, she tries to sabotage an in-development Nihil superweapon by giving it the cracked kyber crystal from Imri's old lightsaber. Unfortunately for Avon, the crystal still works well enough that the Nihil are still able to devastate Dalna, and Mkampa uses Avon's suggestions to help finish the development of the Stormwall.
* TeenGenius: She's only twelve at the start of A Test of Courage, but she's also an aspiring inventor for her age. When she's kidnapped by the Nihil and held prisoner aboard the Poisoned Barb in Mission to Disaster (and by that point, she's at least thirteen), she's able to slice her prison cell open by repurposing parts from old game consoles.
* TookALevelInBadass: A year living under Nihil rule forces Avon to get much better at defending herself, with Deva teaching her how to fight and arming her with a wrist-mounted dart launcher that contains sleep and poison darts. .

The son of Supreme Chancellor Lina Soh, a position which he has very complicated feelings about. When his mother came to Valo for the Republic Fair and brought him along, he fell in love with Jom Lariin, the son of Valo's Mayor Nas Lariin.
----
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: Sometime around the fall of Starlight Beacon, he and Jom went on a sightseeing tour of the Outer Rim and weren't keeping up with ongoing events. While on retreat on Abtin, they learn that the planet had been annexed into the Nihil's Occlusion Zone only months after the fact.
* ShrinkingViolet: Downplayed. He is usually introverted, but because his mother is Supreme Chancellor, the media also gives him a lot of undesired attention, which he would rather they focus on his mother and her pet targons. However, he can be sociable when he's calm. This desire to avoid the spotlight is partly why he and Jom go on a tour of the Outer Rim.
* TrappedBehindEnemyLines: While on his sightseeing tour of the Outer Rim with Jom, the Nihil set up the Stormwall and catch the two of them in it. Aside from the catastrophic damage already done by the Nihil, this gives Lina more personal reasons to break the Stormwall.

A high-end private detective hired by Chancellor Linah Soh to track down the criminal Arathab Fal and the Nihil weapon he's trying to sell, working with Jedi Master Emerick Calphtor in the process.
----
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: As expected from a detective, she's very good at detecting details on a crime scene.
* BadassNormal: She isn't Force-sensitive like Emerick, but being a private detective who's been hardened by the Coruscant Underworld, she's just as capable of pulling her weight in fight.
* ItsPersonal: Has a personal grudge towards Fal for nearly killing her and killing one of her partners.
* MugglesDoItBetter: The fact that she is not a Force user becomes especially helpful to Emerick when they are up against the Nameless, who are notably Brown Note Beings to Force users, and only to Force users. This not only helps Emerick see his way through the hallucinations and survive the encounter, it allows him to gain some coherent intel on the creatures.

An elderly Chadra-Fan who was married to Teemank, who joined the Republic Defense Coalition before being killed at the Battle of Kur. Jedi Master Emerick Caphtor enlists her to spy on the Nihil Doctor Kisma Uttersond.
----
* CrusadingWidower: Her wife, Teemank, was killed fighting the Nihil at the Battle of Kur. When Emerick Caphtor enlists her to spy on Doctor Uttersond (a Nihil collaborator who also happens to be a Chadra-Fan), she jumps at the opportunity in spite of her age (it should be noted that she didn't want Teemank fighting because of her age).
* Foil: To Doctor Uttersond. Both are Chadra-Fans that work for their respective organizations for family-related reasons. Beesar to avenge her deceased wife, Uttersond to pay his living family's bills.
* NeverMessWithGranny: She may be elderly by Chadra-Fan standards and may not be a Force user, but she's also a very capable spy and fighter.
* UnlikelyHero: She was simply a civilian enlisted to be a spy. Her presence aboard Doctor Uttersond's transport ship also saves Emerick's life when the Doctor tries to sic one of the Nameless on him.

A reporter with [=GoNet=], Rhil was attached to the Jedi representatives during the Republic Fair on Valo and subsequently broadcast the Nihil's attack on the fair. When the Stormwall went up, Rhil was trapped in Nihil space and quickly taken prisoner, being used by Marchion Ro as an involuntary mouthpiece for his propaganda.
----
* AscendedExtra: She was a minor character in Phase I's The Rising Storm. In Phase III's The Eye of Darkness, she's become one of the novel's main characters.
* BoyishShortHair: She has her hair short and somewhat mannish and she's not particularly feminine.
* DefiantCaptive: While she pretends to be mostly cowed by her imprisonment, Rhil works on an escape plan with a Nihil who wants to desert before things fall apart. She secretly sends out messages with the truth about what is happening and seeking Jedi to meet her and help them escape the Occlusion Zone.
* IChooseToStay: Although she has an opportunity to escape the Occlusion Zone at the end of The Eye of Darkness, Rhil decides to stay aboard Belin's ship and see what good she can do broadcasting messages of resistance.
* RobotBuddy: Her cam droid T-9, who follows her constantly to record and broadcast. T-9 is taken from her by the Nihil when she gets captured and Rhil is extremely worried about his fate.
* ScrewTheRulesImDoingWhatsRight: As a reporter, Rhil is supposed to simply report on stories and not get involved. She was fired from her previous job after learning that the local fire chief responding to the planetary wildfire she was reporting on was charging people for saving their homes. After confronting him on it in a live broadcast, Rhil grabbed a fire hose and turned it on the corrupt chief. She was subsequently fired, but became popular across the galaxy for her actions and found herself with numerous job offers from other networks.
* TagalongReporter: Initially just following the Jedi around the fair, due to the Nihil attack she ended up being in the thick of the assault and was responsible for broadcasting news of the attack and the Jedi's heroics during it.

----
* AcePilot: Despite her young age, she's already a skilled pilot.
* CoolShip: In the long-standing tradition of cool, super-fast freighters, Nash's ship the Crimson Firehawk is bright and quick enough to evade everythign from pirates to asteroids.
* LGBTRepresentationInMedia: Before a big race, she waves goodbye to her "Mom" and "Mama" watching her proudly from the sidelines.
* TheTeamNormal: Of the five main characters in the series, she's the only one who isn't a Jedi in training or a droid, but just a regular human.
* Tomboy: Everything from her attitude to the way she dresses is very un-girl like.

The industrialist head of the "Raxlo Corporation," who has a rather loose grasp on permission and environmental responsibility. He came into conflict with the Jedi of Tanoo on various occasions when his moneymaking ventures threatened the environment there and in the surrounding system.
----
* AffablyEvil: For a given definition of "evil," anyway. While a bit of a snob, Raxlo is personable and levelheaded and is always open to talk to the Jedi Younglings when they have concerns - though that doesn't mean he'll listen. He also never tries to hurt them when things go sour, just get them out of the way long enough to for him to get what he wants.
* BirdPeople: He's a Gozzo, a species who look like bipedal owls with a pair of antennae popping out of their heads.
* CorruptCorporateExecutive: Played with. The series makes it clear that Raxlo's isn't necessarily wrong to attempt his industrialized ventures, he just has zero awareness of the worlds around him and needs to find places that aren't damaging to everyone else - or at the very least ask first before doing it so things don't go wrong. In his last appearance they make peace with him not by stopping his mining operation, but just by teaching him to work with the locals to do it in an environmentally safe way - which leads to everyone getting what they want. He even makes friends with the local fauna.
* EcocidalAntagonist: Downplayed. All of his episodes are GreenAesop stories, in which he is attempting to mine or harvest resources someplace that is damaging to the environment. However, he's not exactly intending that outcome, but the Younglings need to stop him nonetheless.
* GadgeteerGenius: Raxlo is always proud to declare that each of his harvesting/mining/etc machines are his own inventions.
* ObliviouslyEvil: He doesn't see anything wrong with his industrial ventures, but his ventures usually cause damage to the environments around him, usually prompting the Younglings to stop him. In his last appearance, they break him of this mindset by getting him to work with the locals so he doesn't cause any more harm.
* OddlySmallOrganization: The "Raxlo Corporation" seems to consist entirely of just himself and his droid assistant, which makes him come off more as an independent entrepreneur trying to put on airs.
* TooDumbToLive: Sometimes. Raxlo's big problem is that he doesn't pay attention to what's around him when he's mining, which can lead him into trouble. In one instance, he tried strip mining in a fragile area underground - never noticing that his machines were collapsing the cave around him until his life was literally in jeopardy.
