!!The Watcher

The PlayerCharacter. This FeaturelessProtagonist watches events happening on the continent Vendacti through the Book of the Bequeathers. They've recently lost their memory, but are being guided through their duties by Rei. The Watcher has the rare ability to create Soul Bookmarks, a process that involves manipulating the flow Soul Energy.

The Watcher's true identity and purpose is a major ongoing mystery.
----
* AmbiguouslyHuman: The one first-person POV the player sees [[spoiler: seems to be from Rei's point of view]]...
* AmbiguousSituation: Exactly what's going on is called into doubt when the game [[spoiler:"crashes"]] during the end of Sunset.
* DreamingOfThingsToCome: Sees a vision of Angelia, Naya and Pang pursuing Uzziah--an event years away from happening in the game's timeline.
* EasyAmnesia: Has no memories of anything outside their room and duty. Rei says that it's simply strain from overusing their abilities, but doesn't seem particularly concerned about it happening again...
* ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin: The PlayerCharacter is a Watcher of the Bequeathers, and also TheWatcher. They are a passive observer of history and leaving their room to interact with anyone other than Rei is strictly forbidden.
* IAmWho: [[spoiler:According to Rei, the player was Vendacti. This is eventually revealed as a lie... because Vendacti is ''Rei''.]]
* LoveConfessor: Rei asks the player what their relationship is in one of her daily conversations. You can offer a LoveConfession, but it ''lowers'' her affection.
* TheWatcher: As a Watcher of the Bequeathers, their job is to use the Book of the Bequeathers to be a passive observer of history. Leaving their room or interacting with anyone other than Rei is strictly forbidden. This is not, however, standard procedure for the Bequeathers, suggesting there's more to the rule than what Rei can or will say.

!!Rei
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/rei_sdorica_4.png]]
[[caption-width-right:250:Although the Book of the Bequeathers can show what's happening everywhere in the world, there's no guarantee that what you see is the absolute truth. My truth may be different from your truth. It depends on how you, as a Watcher, interpret the text.]]

The Watcher's [[TheMentor mentor]] and [[TheCaretaker caretaker]]. With gentle smiles and encouraging words, she encourages the Watcher to experience the stories presented in the Book of the Bequeathers, and handles the in-game item shop. She freely admits to having secrets she can't share but looks forward to the day she can. [[spoiler: And the end of ''Sunset'' suggests some of those secrets are bloody indeed.]]
----
* BigNo: Rei is extremely upset by ''Mirage'' chapter seven, and [[MakingTheChoiceForYou forces the Book to start the next chapter]] without your input.
* BeneathTheMask: Successfully using a Bookmark on her shows that she's [[spoiler:weeping uncontrollably about her mentor's actions]].
* BrokenPedestal: Finding out that her mentor, who inducted her into the Watchers [[spoiler:stole the body of High Priest Devious to interfere with history]].
* FantasticRacism: She doesn't like Puggi, or the idea of an entire island of people like him.
* GuideDangIt: Triggering the optional scene in Rei's ''Mirage'' chapter 10 dialogue is nearly impossible to do intentionally.
* KeepingSecretsSucks: She openly admits she's keeping a number of secrets from the Watcher and asks that you wait until she can share them with you.
* MakingTheChoiceForYou: Rei is ''very'' upset after one chapter of ''Mirage'' and forces the player into the next chapter without warning.
* MysteriousBacker: Her self-introduction in the original Chinese is much more ambiguously worded than in English.
* MysteriousPast: She can't talk much about herself. [[spoiler:Is extremely distressed if you bring up the vision involving her.]]
* OddlySmallOrganization: Mentions in one optional dialogue that she hasn't seen any other Watchers since she started working with you, but alludes to unseen "superiors" in another one.
* OminousVisualGlitch: [[spoiler: Rei's dialogue during chapter 17 become distorted and the entire game glitches out, revealing an image of Rei in armour glaring at the player. The game blinks back to normal as Rei finishes her explanation.]]
-->'''Rei''': Huh? Wait, why do you suddenly look so pale?
* RelationshipValues: Finishing ''Sunset'' or starting ''Mirage'' opens a daily conversation system. Rei has several branching dialogues that expound on characters, locations and the story. [[spoiler:Interestingly, your relationship ''starts'' maxed out, and you unlock new conversations by intentionally worsening your relationship with her.]] Similarly, your dialog choices in ''Eclipse'' determine how she feels about you.
* StepfordSmiler: One pre-chapter conversation has a unique cut in of Rei smiling at the Watcher if your relationship drops very low. Unlike her normal smile, this one is downright alien.
* TryingNotToCry: The pre-chapter 10 conversation with her can reveal that she's feeling an extreme sorrow. [[spoiler:Or, given the circumstances and accompanying picture, remembering it.]]
* VideoGameCrueltyPunishment: During Season 2, selecting dialog options that upset her may cause her to give you less valuable items (instead of crystals) or worse, nothing at all.
* WeUsedToBeFriends: In Season 2, if the relationship value between Rei and the player drops low enough, she'll start lamenting that there is a barrier between them. In Season 3, the player's dialogs to Rei tend to be hostile on account of what happens late in Season 2.
* WhamLine: In Season 3 chapter 2.
-->'''Rei''': [[spoiler:It started 1000 years ago, when you were known as Vendacti.]]
