Characters from ''Literature/IzureShinwaNoRagnarok''
----
[[foldercontrol]]
!Humans
[[folder:Raika Shinzen]]
The main character, who wants to take revenge on the gods for destroying his home and kidnapping his sister. He becomes the Divine Apotheosis of Balor, but keeps his free will at the cost of only having a limited portion of Balor's powers.
----
* BadBoss: He's not that considerate to Brunhild's suffering and frequently insults her, though he'll at least protect her if it means protecting Charlotte.
* BerserkButton: The gods in general anger him, especially when they abuse their Divine Apotheosis' or look down on humans.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He holds out hope that he can rescue his sister from her kidnapper and he makes sure to interrogate Brunhild and Freyja to learn if they or someone in their pantheon is the culprit. [[spoiler:At the end of Volume 1, Raika finds himself unable to harm Zeus because the latter is possessing his sister, Tenka.]]
* ChurchMilitant: He was taught combat by the Holy Church, but he has his own reasons for taking on their mission to investigate Laurasia.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Averted. Defeating and taking control of a god just results in an EnemyMine at best.
* EnemyMine: He only protects the gods under his control in the hopes that he can restore their Divine Apotheosis to normal and because he doesn't have the power to fight gods by himself.
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: [[spoiler:Zeus inflicted this on him to make him forget his sister's name, as well as who kidnapped her.]]
* ObliviousToLove: For all his intelligence, he seems to have a hard time picking up on Charlotte's crush on him and understanding her flustered reaction to staying over in his room for the sake of their alliance.
* PetTheDog:
** He's normally cold to Brunhild, but at the end of Volume 1, he suggests he, Charlotte, and Shishigane go to the crepe shop because the Valkyrie wants to eat there.
** He invites Leon to a pool party with his friends despite knowing the latter will forget, and wants to remember the event for Leon's state.
* SharingABody: He's mainly the one in control of his body, but Balor can hijack his eye sometimes.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: He's nice to his human friends, but has nothing but contempt for all gods due to the previous Ragnarok and due to his sister's kidnapping. This is especially evident in his interactions with Brunhild, as shown in his PetTheDog entry.
* TakingYouWithMe: He was willing to let Balor fully possess him in order to kill Zeus, which could potentially result in his DeathOfPersonality. Fortunately, Zeus decided to strike a deal with him instead.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Raika admits that Balor is one of the worst kinds of gods, but works with him in order to win the war.
* {{Tsundere}}: Balor insists Raika secretly cares about Brunhild despite his harsh treatment towards her, but the latter claims he's only trying to protect Charlotte by proxy.
* WillfullyWeak: Unlike the other Divine Apotheosis, he's not fully possessed by a god and he intends to stay that way. This means he can only use a limited portion of Balor's powers three times a day. He also doesn't gain the physical enhancements that other Divine Apotheosis have.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Charlotte Labpeyn]]
Raika's upperclassman in Laurasia. She gets possessed by Brunhild, but has her personality restored due to Raika's evil eye.
----
* AndIMustScream: Most of the time, she's conscious while Brunhild is in control. She would have been stuck in this situation if it weren't for Raika.
* CuteBookworm: She's a member of the library committee and has a clumsy and shy personality.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Out of nervous impulse, she asks Raika to go with her to a random boutique and once inside, she tells the clerk that she's shopping for underwear. Charlotte then realizes what a bad idea that was.
* SharingABody: After Raika commands Brunhild to restore Charlotte's personality, the two personalities can communicate with each other and Charlotte is in control by default. If danger arises, Brunhild will take control to protect Charlotte. Unfortunately, sharing a body means Brunhild will feel aroused when Charlotte does.
* ShrinkingViolet: She's very shy around men and faints when she realizes that her bringing Raika to shop for lingerie makes it look like they're dating.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Averted. She has white hair and is one of the nicest characters in the series.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Maria Mint]]
Like Raika, Maria is an agent from the Holy Church, who assists him in his attempt to win Ragnarok.
----
* AndThenJohnWasAZombie: [[spoiler:The cover of Volume 7 shows that she's the Divine Apotheosis of Kushiel, one of the seven angels of punishment.]]
* ChurchMilitant: Dialogue from Volume 1 Chapter 2 states that she's also capable of killing threats to the church, though she mainly uses her abilities to bless Raika's guns.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She doesn't like it when Shishigane flirts with Raika or when Charlotte forms an alliance with him.
* HypocriticalHumor: Despite telling Shishigane to act more reserved around Raika, she has no issue hugging him from behind.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Shishigane Ruirui]]
----
* DeathOfPersonality: [[spoiler:Due to being a proper Divine Apotheosis of Freyja, she can't be restored to her original personality, though Raika hopes there will eventually be a way to save her.]]
* GrandTheftMe: She's the Divine Apotheosis of [[spoiler:Freyja]].
* WeHardlyKnewYe: In the very first volume [[spoiler:she goes through DeathOfPersonality. It's unknown if she was already possessed when she first appeared.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tenka]]
----
* CynicismCatalyst: [[spoiler:Her kidnapping is part of the reason why Raika became a cynical avenger. The other part is the destruction of their family and home.]]
* ExpressiveAccessory: Her bunny hairpin always has a similar facial expression to her current one.
* GenkiGirl: She's an energetic member of the class committee. [[spoiler:It's unknown if this is how she would act without Zeus controlling her.]]
* OnlyOneName: Unlike most of the characters listed in the official site's character page, she has no last name. [[spoiler:Her last name is revealed to be Shinzen.]]
* ShorterMeansSmarter: She's very short, but she can speak seven languages.
* WalkingSpoiler: [[spoiler:As Raika's little sister possessed by Zeus, her reveal is a huge bombshell for him.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Kunisaki Kojiro]]
----
* CasanovaWannabe: He's very well-informed about all the pretty girls in school and is jealous that Raika is a ChickMagnet.
* GrandTheftMe: He's the Divine Apotheosis of [[spoiler:Apollo, TheDragon to Zeus]].
* VitriolicBestBuds: He's a friend to Raika, with the latter occasionally ribbing him for his perverted tendencies.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Leon Bladebright]]
----
* AssimilationBackfire: Leon suffers from anterograde amnesia, which causes the god possessing him to suffer from it too. The identity of the god is considered new information, which means both Leon and the god have forgotten that possession even took place.
* EnlightenedSelfInterest: He always [[ChronicHeroSyndrome goes out of his way]] to help others, but he states that doing good for others will make them more likely to help him in turn. This is a concept his late father imparted to him to help him survive.
* ForGreatJustice: Since he doesn't remember the nature of his powers, he believes he's a hero of justice who can solve the mysterious murders taking place on the island.
* HeelFaceRevolvingDoor: After Raika's team attacks him and Susanoo, he cooperates with Raika to defeat Osiris, but a later illustration shows him as an enemy.
[[/folder]]
!Gods
[[folder:Balor]]
A Celtic god who has the power of the evil eye.
----
* AchillesHeel: Despite the seemingly game-breaking powers of his evil eye, it doesn't work well against deities with means to resist "evil" abilities.
* CardCarryingVillain: He admits that he's an evil god and he makes no effort to hide his unruly personality. When Raika considers letting Balor fully possess him to defeat Zeus, the evil god himself notes that this is a bad idea.
* DirtyOldMan: Raika has to close his eye just to keep him from oogling girls.
* {{Geas}}: His evil eye allows him to force commands onto gods that he controls, though those gods can find loopholes.
* ItAmusedMe: He goes along with being Raika's sidekick because he finds the latter's tactics amusing.
* JerkassGod: He's a rude pervert and the only reason Raika puts up with him is to use his powers.
* JerkassHasAPoint: When Raika is against going to the indoor pool with his classmates, Balor points out that the team needs to rest properly due to their injuries and fatigue from the battles with Susanoo and Osiris. After Raika relents, Balor admits what he really wants is to see the girls in their swimsuits.
* KickTheDog: He forces Brunhild to strip as a demonstration of his powers as opposed to a less humiliating order.
* LaughablyEvil: While his perverted comments and banter with Raika makes him humorous, it's also clear that nothing good would come of him taking full control of his Divine Apotheosis.
* MagicalEye: His eye gives him the ability to control other gods, inflict instant death on enemies within his sight, and petrify objects within his sight.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Brunhild]]
A Valkyrie from Norse mythology.
----
* ACupAngst: She's jealous that her host is more stacked than her.
* {{BFS}}: She wields Nothung as her weapon of choice, which is almost as big as Charlotte.
* BigEater: She eats an entire parfait by herself, only to get a stomachache when she and Raika are attacked.
* ButtMonkey: She is forced to strip by Balor, is groped by her host's friends, gets a stomachache from eating a huge parfait, [[spoiler:and is a sacrificial pawn to her boss.]]
* DumbIsGood: Downplayed on the good part, but she's one of the few gods with a sense of honor. She also has a bad case of LeeroyJenkins and probably would have died in the first night if she didn't fight Raika first.
* KnightInShiningArmor: Combined with HonorBeforeReason. Unlike other deities, she doesn't believe in using sneak attacks or brainwashed minions and she would rather fight her opponents one-on-one.
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: [[spoiler:At the end of chapter 4, she sides with Raika against Freyja both because of the {{Geas}} and because her boss tried to kill her.]]
* OvershadowedByAwesome: While she has superhuman strength, her magic abilities pale in comparison to other gods. [[spoiler:This is a hint that she's not actually the candidate for her mythology.]]
* StarterVillain: She's the first deity to be enslaved by Raika's evil eye, which only works because she's the lowest ranked.
* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:She's not actually the candidate for Norse mythology. Instead, she's an EliteMook summoned by Freyja, who used her a decoy to draw out the candidates of other mythologies.]]
* WeakButSkilled: Her swordplay is on par with Susanoo, but is unable to match him in strength and speed due to her lower rank.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Freyja]]
A high-ranking goddess from Norse mythology.
----
* AbhorrentAdmirer: Raika is not amused by her attempts to flirt with him and seduce him.
* BadBoss: Moreso than Raika. She treats [[spoiler:Brunhild]] as a tool and attempts to dispose of her.
* DoubleStandardRapeFemaleOnMale: Averted. [[spoiler:Her AttemptedRape on Raika via her unwilling Divine Apotheosis's body is played for horror.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: She constantly flirts with Raika and briefly tries to act understanding to [[spoiler:Brunhild's]] problems, but she's not a benevolent goddess at all.
* HaremSeeker: She wants a harem full of strong men and wants to add Raika to that list.
* GracefulLoser: [[spoiler:Surprisingly, she takes losing to Raika and falling under his control rather well. It helps that she has a VillainousCrush on him.]]
* GrandTheftMe: Her Divine Apotheosis is [[spoiler:Shishigane Ruirui]].
* InterplayOfSexAndViolence: In the manga, she blushes when Raika survives her FlechetteStorm.
* LaserGuidedKarma: She's a BadBoss to [[spoiler:Brunhild, but by the end of Volume 1, she gets her own BadBoss in Raika.]]
* NiceJobFixingItVillain: [[spoiler:She hastily made Charlotte into an incomplete Divine Apotheosis, which allowed Raika to recover her original personality. If Charlotte was possessed by a different god through normal means, she would have gone through DeathOfPersonality like everyone else.]]
* OutGambitted: [[spoiler:She uses Brunhild as a hostage to force Raika to waste a use of his evil eye and uses her Regalia, Folkvangr, to place Raika into a situation where his evil eye can't see every enemy. He gets around this by using an illusion to make her think he used his eye of death twice, and then uses eye of death when he's at the highest point of Folkvangr to wipe out her Einherjar at once.]]
* {{Psychopomp}}: Her Regalia allows her to summon an army of warriors from Folkvangr. She also gets first priority on picking dead warriors over Odin, meaning her army is made of better warriors than his.
* VillainBall: She exposes her Regalia to Raika out of SuicidalOverconfidence, despite how her previous attacks were already wearing him down.
* {{Yandere}}: She takes her VillainousCrush on Raika too far by trying to make him an Einherjar, which means killing him in battle.
* YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness: She attacks her loyal servant, [[spoiler:Brunhild]], in order to force Raika to use his evil eye.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Zeus]]
The top god of Greek Mythology and the overseer of the current Ragnarok.
----
* AnOfferYouCantRefuse: He offers to return [[spoiler:Tenka]] to Raika in exchange for the latter helping Greek Mythology win. Raika points out that the only way for them to win is to kill all other Divine Apotheosis, including himself, though Zeus promises to revive him. Unsurprisingly, Raika immediately notes that this [[DealWithTheDevil deal]] probably can't be trusted, though he has to go along with the deal because Zeus had an excuse to off Raika for breaking the rules.
* ArchEnemy: He serves as this to Raika [[spoiler:due to possessing his sister.]]
* BigBad: As the current overseer, he's the most powerful antagonist in terms of authority.
* DirtyOldMan: [[spoiler:As Tenka, he gropes Brunhild in the lingerie shop.]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: He has nothing but compliments for Raika's victory against Freyja and generally acts like an energetic classmate, [[spoiler:but he's also using the latter's sister to taunt him.]]
* LaughablyEvil: Despite being the god responsible for Raika's DarkAndTroubledPast, he has some goofy moments in his student guise, such as expressing ACupAngst when Ruirui calls his host a "chopping board" or using his powers to earn high marks during physical education classes.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: He can transform into both animate and inanimate things, which means he can NoSell Balor's petrification.
* WalkingSpoiler: [[spoiler:He counts as this due to possessing Tenka Shinzen.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Apollo]]
The current representative for Greek Mythology and a sun god.
----
* CrouchingMoronHiddenBadass: Who would have guessed his Divine Apotheosis is [[spoiler:Kunisaki]] of all people?
* TheDragon: He's playing along with Zeus's "alliance" with Raika in order to gain an advantage in Ragnarok.
* TheStraightAndArrowPath: He plans on taking advantage of his archery skills to assist Raika without giving his identity away.
* VillainousCrush: Combined with VillainousRescue. [[spoiler:He has a crush on Maria, which is shown when he kills Ammit to save her when it would have been more beneficial for him to snipe Osiris. Unfortunately for him, this clues Raika in on his host's identity because Kunisaki earlier admitted to liking Maria.]]
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Susanoo]]
The Shinto god possessing Himeko Kushinada
----
* BloodKnight: Susanoo has no personal stake in the goals of the war and instead only seeks to fight strong opponents.
* NoSell: His sword, Ame no Habakiri, allows him to resist "evil" abilities, which unfortunately includes Balor's Evil Eye.
* OneManArmy: His Regalia, Ame no Murakumo, effortlessly wipes out Freyja's Einherjar army.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Osiris]]
The Egyption god possessing Emily
----
* TheBeastmaster: He can control mythological beasts such as Ammit.
* ResurrectiveImmortality: Every time he dies, he can revive in a certain location. Worse yet, he has the ability to commit suicide without any magic incantation, meaning he can escape from petrification.
* WakeUpCallBoss: While Freyja was defeated in the very first volume, Osiris puts up a much better fight against multiple Divine Apotheoses and survives the second volume without falling under a Geas.
