!Anzio High School
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/GUP_AnzioSmall_860.png]]
An Italian themed school, representing Aichi Prefecture. Noted to be highly motivated, they have been shown to deploy varieties of [[UsefulNotes/NewRomanLegions Italian tanks]] such as a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carro_Armato_P_40 Carro Armato P40]], a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Semovente_75/18 Semovente 75/18]], and a [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L3/33 Carro Veloce L3/33]], while their schoolship is modelled after the aircraft carrier [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italian_aircraft_carrier_Aquila Aquila]].

Despite being a mere footnote in the main anime, their match against Ōarai is given more depth both in the manga and later on in ''The Real Anzio Battle'' OVA, [[spoiler:but with completely different circumstances]].

In the movie [[spoiler:they show up to help Ōarai in the match against the University team, helping to take out the Morser-Karl as well as providing recon for Ōarai's team by riding on the roller-coaster tracks. They field one CV-33 in the match, possibly because it's the only tank that fit on the back of the pickup truck they came in, not being able to afford other options]].
----
!!! Tropes thay show that Anzio isn't weak... no, that Anzio is strong!
* AttentionDeficitOohShiny: During the introductory stinger of the said OVA, Anchovy was giving a speech towards the school's Sensha-do team. Just as she was about to reveal their "Secret Weapon", the bell tower tolls to signal noon time. Cue everyone present (save for Anchovy, Carpaccio, and Pepperoni) charging up the stairs towards the cafeteria.
* BigEater: An entire school of them. In the OVA, Anchovy states that in order to buy a new tank for their school, she had to cut the meal times from three times to two. They also have food stalls that make it seem that they have a school festival ''every day''. In the ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'' manga, some of their students exhaust the pasta supply ''for the entire ship'' after just a day of staying in Ōarai.
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Everyone but the P40 regularly maneuver their vehicles as though they're in high-speed chases and often engage in plans that involve climbing other teams' tanks with their own. In ''Das Finale'', the CV 33s are coordinated enough to ''pick up'' some of St. Gloriana's Crusaders to dump them into a river and the whole team can pull off a pseudo-Testudo formation to protect their flag tank (unfortunately, they didn't see the Matilda behind them with a clear shot on their P40's rear).
* EdibleThemeNaming: All main characters of the school's Sensha-do team are named after Italian food and ingredients.
* EnemyDetectingRadar: In the movie [[spoiler:they provide this role for Ōarai against the University team by riding the the roller-coaster tracks above the amusement park.]]
* FragileSpeedster: The CV 33 is the least armored vehicle fielded in any sensha-do match, but also the fastest. Enemies also need to score a direct hit to actually take them out as anything else will only inconvenience them for the few seconds it will take the crews to get the tankette back on its tracks and return to fighting.
* FriendlySniper: In the ''Ribbon Warrior'' manga, one of the weapons Anzio brings to the Cauldron tournament is an actual anti-materiel sniper rifle that they put to good use against one of the Pravda teams.
* GratuitousItalian: Almost everyone tends to pepper their speech with bits of Italian words in between.
* JokeCharacter: The anime (prior to the seventh OVA) doesn't show the fight, just [[CurbstompBattle the result]].
** LethalJokeCharacter: From the OVA onwards, they're not out-and-out pushovers and are perfectly capable of getting some wins.
* {{Leitmotif}}: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HQsA_aevdSg Funiculì, Funiculà]]
* LetsGetDangerous: Their tank selection sucks and most of their members have pretty skewed priorities but Anchovy is a pretty capable commander and, when they can get their heads in the game, they can actually be pretty formidable.
* MadeOfIron: Par for the course
* MultiTrackDrifting: As perfectly executed during the match's 5-on-1 "dogfight" involving Duck Team's Type 89 and a "squadron" of Carro Veloce Tankettes.
* NoodleIncident: Played with. First played straight in how Anzio was able to advance to the second round of the sensha-do tournament was never elaborated upon in the animated material. Notable in that they were able to do this using only [=CV33s=] and Semoventes, as the P40 was only introduced during their match with Ōarai. Even {{Lampshaded}} in their own [=OVA=] when they simply mention "it was difficult". Finally [[ZigZaggingTrope zig-zagged]] into [[AvertedTrope aversion]] in the [[AllThereInTheManual suplementary material]]. [[spoiler:They used the tankettes to lure the enemy tanks away from their flag tank, then took it down with their [[BoringButPractical Semoventes]].]]
** A straight example is the number of times they have attempted "Operation T-Square" [[spoiler: which is making a [=CV 33=] tankette skip over a body of water through its speed.]] The only hint we get is Pepperoni's comment before they attempt another try in ''Der Film'' to escape a pursuing enemy tank [[spoiler: and succeeding]].
-->'''Pepperoni''': This has never worked!
* PerpetualPoverty: With the kind of meal costs they have, its no wonder. This is also the RunningGag with Anzio, that they are one of the few schools even poorer than ''Ōarai''.
** Amusingly, if Anzio really wanted to, they could afford a rather decent tank lineup by reducing their meal times to just one, evidenced by the fact that they were able to buy a P40 medium tank by reducing their meal times to just two per day. It's just that Anzio cares more about the "fun" aspects of Sensha-do as opposed to the "competition" part so they do not put as much effort in sensha-do as in their love of food and partying.
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: Their default school uniform includes a short black skirt to contrast their white pantyhose.
* SupremeChef: Practically most of the Academy's student clubs have food stalls around their complex. Their justification is that they have to earn their budget since Anzio itself is cash-strapped.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Pasta. Just the mere mention can get any of the girls excited and, in ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'', Oarai running out of it was what prompted all of them to go back to Anzio.

Anzio's squadron commander. Commands from a [[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carro_Armato_P_40 Carro Armato P 26/40]] during the quarterfinals match against Ōarai.

While initially portrayed in the manga as a {{Jerkass}}, her (canon) anime version is a completely different character, being nicer and less tyrannical.
----
!!!Tropes for the Duce
* AdaptationalDumbass: She's a reasonably skilled commander in the anime and understands the value of deception in warfare. The manga makes her a GeneralFailure who barely poses a threat to Oarai.
* AdaptationalJerkass: Is a lot more rude in the manga.
* AllThereInTheManual: Her actual name, Chiyomi Anzai, is not mentioned in the [=OVA=] (at least, not in full, Yuzu addresses her as 'Anzai', with hints of her given name from Anzu's greeting her as 'Chobiko') or the manga adaptation.
* BadassCape: Wears one in the anime. Notably, she's a much better commander there than she is in the manga.
* BreatherEpisode: The battle against her, sandwiched between Saunders and Pravda, both highly regarded schools that pushed Ooarai onto the brink of defeat, is considerably easier. It's also PlayedForLaughs, as Ōarai didn't even have to fight all the way until sundown.
* ButtMonkey: Apparently, [[https://mangadex.org/chapter/385581/4 Chapter 7]] of the ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'' spin-off manga portrayed her as this: first, her appearance [[spoiler:during the meeting of the teams who got beaten by Ōarai Academy during the tournament (including St. Gloriana)]] was apparently blocked with a conveniently-placed speech bubble; second, she later got hit in the face (knocking her out in the process) by a scale model of a dragon wagon (courtesy of an irate Katyusha); and third, she was apparently left behind at the said meeting place, unaware that the others have left.
** Extends even to her teammates at Anzio in the post-credits stinger of the Seventh OVA: [[spoiler:she takes the entire team to the battleground (in the middle of the night) to cheer Ōarai on in the Tournament Finals. They made camp there, but apparently slept for the entire day, ''completely missing the match itself.'']]
** She gets subjected to quite a bit of physical comedy in ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'', e.g. getting almost drowned while practicing swimming.
* ClarkKenting: ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'' reveals that she wears contacts. Switching these for her glasses and changing her hairstyle is apparently enough for the rest of her team to not recognise her.
* CrazyEnoughToWork: In the movie, she proposes "Operation T-Square"[[note]]which is to make the [=CV 33=] skip across a body of water using its speed[[/note]] in order to escape a pursuing Pershing tank. '''[[spoiler: It works.]]''' Also, Pepperoni's statement prior to this implies that [[NoodleIncident they have attempted to do this many times in the past.]]
-->'''Pepperoni:''' This has never worked!
* DartboardOfHate: Manga only. Hits a photo of Miho with a riding crop, and appears to have one of Kay posted on the same bulletin board.
* DefensiveWhat: Manga only. After Miho [[ArmorPiercingQuestion asks her if she believes that her and her teammates' efforts are meaningless because they lost]].
* DefeatMeansFriendship: In the [=OVA=], she becomes friends with Miho and Ōarai after Anzio's loss, and even goes to cheer for them in the finals... until they botch that too.
* DrillHair: Has a couple of these as part of her twinTails.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: Manga only. When Miho points out that [[ThePowerOfFriendship her bonds with her comrades]] are most important, Anchovy points out that it’s a commander’s responsibility to bring victory to them.
* {{Foil}}: Manga and Anime versions are this to different characters:
** Manga version nicely contrasts with Kay, given that she values victory above all else, while Kay prefers exciting matches. This is emphasized in that Kay's match is shown in the anime, while Anchovy's is shown in the manga. She also contrasts with Katyusha in that both look down on Miho and insult her decision to [[spoiler:save one of her tanks at the cost of the tournament win]], but while Anchovy strives for victory out of a feeling of responsibility to her comrades, Katyusha mainly does it for the sake of her own pride, and [[spoiler:Anchovy is a SoreLoser while Katyusha is a GracefulLoser]]. She also contrasts nicely with both of them in that the other two are good commanders, while she isn't.
** Anime version is a foil for almost every other school's team commander, as they are from schools that take Sensha-do very seriously and their teams often follow an almost military structure (or even their captains have actual authority in their schools), while in Anzio Sensha-do is just another club playing for fun, apparently no more important than the other clubs, and whose captain leads through personal charisma.
* FullNameBasis: Likes calling Miho Nishizumi by her full name in a manner reminiscent of [[VisualNovel/AceAttorney Franziska Von Karma]], in addition to the latter’s attitude toward winning. Downplayed in the anime version, where she drops the FullNameBasis when congratulating Ōarai for their victory.
* GeneralFailure: In the manga only, her plan to lure Ōarai into a trap briefly gives her the advantage, but she gives Ōarai far less trouble than their other opponents despite outnumbering them. Unlike other matches, the match doesn't go down to isolating and disabling the enemy flag tank. In the anime, her defeat was due to [[SurroundedByIdiots Pepperoni's botched decoy set-up]].
* GivingSomeoneThePointerFinger: Manga only. When telling Miho that she doesn't accept her way of Sensha-do, this trope makes the statement all the ruder.
* GracefulLoser: In the OVA, she's shown to have no ill feelings towards Ōarai after her defeat, even going as far as to invite them to their feast after the match and even making an effort to cheer for Ōarai for the finals[[note]]which they miss due to partying so hard the night before[[/note]].
* HiddenDepths:
** In the manga version, while obsessed with victory, she says it's a commander's obligation to her team, and as she and Carpaccio are walking away after Anzio's loss, Anchovy apologizes to her, indicating that [[ItsAllMyFault she blames herself for the loss]], in spite of her anger toward Miho and her school.
** In the Anime version, the carefree attitude of her team is revealed at the end to be [[spoiler:the Anzio Sensha-do style: highlighting the "sport" part and downplaying the "martial arts" part and having as good a time as possible when practicing it while still striving for victory.]]
* HotBlooded: Both versions show her as a high throttle girl.
* InsistentTerminology: Don't address her as anything other than her nickname or title.
* ItaliansTalkWithHands: She may not actually ''be'' Italian, but both versions do this.
* {{Jerkass}}: In the Manga she openly calls Miho's way of Sensha-do weak before the start of their match, and makes disparaging allusions to Miho's decision to sacrifice victory to rescue her teammates. After losing, she outright accuses Miho of [[spoiler:being responsible for her team's defeat in the last tournament finals]]. The anime completely averts this, however.
* JerkassHasAPoint: Manga only. [[spoiler:Ōarai’s continued existence, something everyone is willing to fight to protect, rides on her team's success in the tournament, although Miho doesn’t know that and it’s unclear whether Anchovy does.]]
* LargeHam: In the OVA, she's loud, bombastic, and pretty much likes being the center of attention.
* TheLeader: The charismatic leader of Anzio's sensha-do team.
* NiceToTheWaiter: Anime only. After every game, win or lose, Anzio offers a huge feast, not just for both teams, but also for the game staff.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: In the manga, Anzio starts out with the advantage. In the anime, her cunning and tactics allow Anzio a chance to get that advantage. At least until they botch it.
* PuttingOnTheReich: Her school's uniform is almost a carbon copy of Mussolini's fascist army uniforms, and she is also seen in the OVA wearing various extremely grandiose copies of Mussolini's wardrobe, such as a massive cape and riding crop.
* RedBaron: "Duce"
* ReluctantFanserviceGirl: In the first few pages of ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'' Chapter 17, [[spoiler:she got a request from some of her "fans" to model in a bikini with her subordinates. She wasn't that much into the idea, but with some whisper-to-ear persuasion from Carpaccio, and with the rest of Anzio cheering her on, she obliged. Immediately, she shied away after the shoot (despite the fact that she had pretty decent proportions).]]
* {{Retcon}}: Of the {{Rewrite}} variety. The OVA that depicts the Anzio fight (previously seen only in the manga) was radically different. Anchovy's personality and behaviour (alongside about 75% of the tropes related to her) was completely inverted, changing her from a victory-obsessed SoreLoser to a fun-loving charismatic commander.
* SayMyName: Manga only. Screams “Miho Nishizumiiiiii!” just before her defeat.
* SecondPlaceIsForLosers:
** In the manga, she thinks that it's a commander's duty to bring ''first place'' to her subordinates.
** In the anime, she is seen tired of other teams thinking of Anzio as "losers", and strives to reach semifi- nah, FINALS!
* SecretIdentity: Of the KingIncognito variety, according to [[http://danbooru.donmai.us/posts/1732891?tags=girls_und_panzer this]] ''Motto Love Love Sakusen Desu'' strip.
* ShutUpKirk: Manga only. After Miho says there are more important things than victory, namely her comrades, Anchovy tells Miho that if her comrades are so important, she should do her job as commander and win.
* SoreLoser: Manga only. Doesn't take her defeat at Ōarai's hands well. Inverted with her anime version, where she's a GracefulLoser instead.
* StrangeMindsThinkAlike: Side materials show that she's one of the few people who can keep up with Mika's antics.
* TheyCallMeMisterTibbs: Always wants to be referred to as "Anchovy", or the more honorific "Duce". She even corrects [[TheNicknamer Anzu]] when she calls her "Chovy" both in the Anzio OVA and The Movie.
* VillainousBreakdown: Manga only. Late in the match, and into the post-game, she freaks out.
* WhipOfDominance: She's an arrogant and demanding commander with a HairTriggerTemper who carries a riding crop with her, which she brandishes around to try to make herself look more assertive, intimidating, and authoritative.

Anzio's second-in-command.
----
!!!Tropes for Carpaccio
* AdaptationDyeJob: Is a brunette when first introduced in the manga, but becomes a blonde in all the advertisements for the Anzio OVA.
** Happens InUniverse, too, as the teaser page of chapter 20 of the manga shows her being dyed blonde by Anchovy, Katyusha and Nonna
* AffectionateNickname: [[spoiler:Caesar calls her "Hina[[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics -chan]]."]]
* ChildhoodFriend: To [[spoiler: Caesar]], whom she communicates with online. Becomes the latter's {{Friendly Enemy}} during the match against Ōarai.
* ClingyJealousGirl: PlayedForLaughs in [[https://mangadex.org/chapter/385593/18 Chapter 16]] of ''Motto Love Love Sakusen''. [[spoiler:While she was glad to be reunited with Caesar, she then spots the name "Oryuu" on the inside of her right sleeve (Caesar "borrowed" Oryuu's uniform earlier in the chapter, which she lent to Carpaccio.) She was ''definitely'' not pleased.]]
* GracefulLoser: Both manga and anime versions qualify. It's more notable in the manga due to contrast to her superior.
* MellowFellow: Unlike most of Anzio, she's cheerful in a serene way.
* NumberTwo: Anzio's second-in-command.
* TheStoic: Calm and even-tempered compared to Anchovy and the rest of Anzio.
* TaremeEyes: In contrast to the TsurimeEyes on Anchovy and Pepperoni.

One of Anzio's senior tankers, she's in charge of commanding Anzio's tankettes. Not the sharpest tool in Anzio's shed.
----
* BoundAndGagged: In Chapter 17 of ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'', [[spoiler:Duck team apparently kidnaps her after Ōarai successfully retrieved Momo from Anzio.]]
* BoyishShortHair: The only giveaway that she's a girl would be a braided strand hanging on her left.
* {{Determinator}}: Fitting, as her Veloces' opponent is Duck Team's Type 89. Several times the latter tank repetitively shoots the 5 tankettes, and they still kept coming since their flags aren't out yet. When her own tankette got flipped, she got thrown out of it before she starts running and pushing it right side up.
* TheDitz: Not exactly the sharpest among Anzio's Sensha-do crews.
* DumbJock: Since sensha-do is a sport, she fits in the category. She's not only a good sensha-do practitioner, but she's also pretty athletic and good at regular sports like volleyball and swimming, as shown in the ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'' manga. As noted above, she's not really that good in the thinking department.
* HotBlooded: She is prone to loud outbursts when she gets fired up. In the ''Motto Love Love Sakusen'' manga, she's recruited by Duck team twice[[note]]the first when she poses as an Ooarai student to learn how to cook the Ooarai Tank-katsu and the second when the Duck team kidnaps her during their rescue of Momo[[/note]] because of this trait.
* IdiotBall: [[spoiler: She's put in charge of deploying the decoys to be used in fooling Oarai. Unfortunately, she puts up ALL 11 decoys when Anzio only has 10 tanks, leading to Oarai seeing through the deception.]]
* {{Irony}}: Her statement about using one's brains in battle becomes moot when [[spoiler: she botches their well-thought-of strategy of placing decoys to lure Ōarai into an encirclement trap [[IdiotBall by placing all eleven decoys in their assigned places, causing Ōarai to see through their ruse.]]]]
* LargeHam: Rather boisterous aboard one of Anzio's tankettes, serving as tank commander.
* LooseLips: Unwittingly reveals the type of tank Anzio just recently purchased to Yukari during the latter's infiltration of Anzio.
* NoodleIncident: Her cock-up [[spoiler:in setting up all of Anzio's cardboard decoys]] in the seventh OVA wasn't the first time, as inferred from Anchovy's statement:
-->'''Anchovy:''' I kept reminding her about this! Why would she forget about it?
* SupremeChef: Can cook a Napolitan[[note]] a Japanese style spaghetti usually made with tomato ketchup[[/note]] pasta dish quite well, as Yukari found out during her infiltration.
----
