[[caption-width-right:350:Left to right: Gladio, Ignis, Noctis, and Prompto.]]
* BadassCrew: It wouldn't be a ''Final Fantasy'' game without one, now would it? All four are powerful fighters and willing to stick together through thick and thin.
* CoolCar: The group rides in Noctis's ''Regalia'', a memento from his father Regis.
* DemotedToExtra: In ''Anime/KingsglaiveFinalFantasyXV'', Noctis and his friends only appear in the opening scenes/prologue and TheStinger.
** In ''Dawn of the Future'', [[spoiler:Noctis leaves Ignis, Gladio and Prompto behind at Hammerhead when he hears about Luna's resurrection; they are not mentioned again until the end of the novel]].
* FighterMageThief: Noctis is a JackOfAllStats, but his crew consists of Gladiolus (the Fighter who specializes in close combat and brute strength), Ignis (the Mage who's very skilled in elemental attacks), and Prompto (the Thief who specializes in ranged, quick attacks). Interestingly, Ignis and Prompto can also switch the roles depending on their playstyle, as Ignis can also wield knives and focus on zippy, FlashStep-style knife attacks and Prompto has access to status-causing and elemental firearms.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Noctis, Prompto, Ignis, and Gladiolus are best friends who stick with each other through thick and thin. However, three of them have female love interests, making their bond as friends 100% heterosexual ([[AmbiguouslyGay Ignis, on the other hand]]...)
* MenDontCry: Thoroughly averted. [[spoiler:During the mid-credits stinger, set during the gang's final campfire dinner before returning to Insomnia for the final battle, the guys are clearly mourning the fact that Noctis would have to die to purge Eos of both the Starscourge and Ardyn's madness, and so could the other three defending him.]]
* NiceMeanAndInbetween: Among Noctis’ friends: Prompto is the cheerful and optimistic one (Nice), Gladio is gruff and brutally honest with everyone (Mean), and Ignis is the strategist who often keeps things in the middle (In-Between).
* OptionalBoss: In ''Episode Ardyn'', you can fight Noctis and his retinue in an optional battle.
* PromotedToPlayable: At first only Noctis was playable, but an update saw that all four became full-fledged player characters.
* SecretAIMoves: Ignis, Gladio and Prompto all have abilities they can only use as AI controlled allies and abilities they can only use when playable.
* TheTeam: A BandOfBrothers foursome with odd parallels to another famous [[Franchise/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles four-brother team:]] Noctis is the serious but kind {{Leader}} and prince. Gladiolus is both TheLancer and TheBigGuy as his body guard and most experienced fighter. Ignis is TheSmartGuy as his attendant who has received rare special education. Prompto is TheBabyOfTheBunch PluckyComicRelief.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Each member has preferred dishes among those Ignis can cook. This is actually a gameplay mechanic, as eating a character's favorite dish increases how fast their skills level up (or, in the case of Noct, increases the speed the Tech Gauge increases).
* TrueCompanions: No matter whether time, distance or even heated arguments come between them, the boys always have each other's backs.
--> '''Cid''': Remember, those ain't your bodyguards. They're your brothers. Trust in 'em. Always.
* WatchingTroyBurn: At the beginning of the game, the four can only watch helplessly when their hometown, Insomnia, gets burned to the ground by Niflheim and their daemons.

The main character, Noctis is the Crown Prince of Lucis who is charged with defending his kingdom and its sacred artifact known as the Crystal. He draws on the power of the Crystal to wield an arsenal of supernatural weapons and teleport. Has a strong friendship with his TrueCompanions.
----
* AllYourPowersCombined: The Scepter of The Pious is a Royal Arm that mimics several of the other Royal Arms by generating a HardLight copy through it, like a [[LaserSword light saber]]. The Royal Arms it mimics are the Blade of The Mystic, Sword of the Wise, Trident of The Oracle, Axe of The Conquerer and Sword of The Tall. Interestingly, the mimicked form of the Blade of the Mystic is used for the mimicked form of the Sword of The Wise. However, what sets it apart from those Royal Arms is that it draws on Noctis’ magic stat while all of the mimicked Royal Arms draw on Noctis’ attack stat, which makes sense, because while the Royal Arm makes a blade, it is still a blade of magic, and what sets it apart is that it’s mimicked weapons lack certain qualities of the originals. Particularly, it lacks the Sword of The Wise’s Warp Strike combo starter, the Blade of the Mystic’s long combo and stat buff, the Sword of The Fall’s body part dismemberment by getting a shorter combo, the Trident of The Oracle’s combo finisher and the Axe of The Conquerer’s stagger potential by virtue of only being regulated to air attacks, dodge attacks and combo finishers. This potentially makes this weapon a JackOfAllTrades and a MasterOfNone and MagikarpPower if the player doesn’t prioritize the magic stat or figure out which of the mimicked weapons is the best to use because the player could potentially do little damage with the weapon by not prioritizing the magic stat and/or using the not as good mimicked weapons.
* AnimalLover: He absolutely ''adores'' animals, especially cats and chocobos, and he's got a loving relationship with Luna's dogs, especially Umbra.
* AudienceSurrogate: Noctis fulfills and acts the part while he explores [[spoiler: the [[BonusDungeon Pitioss Ruins]] dungeon, acting just as annoyed as the player would be at several points, once giving up he'd claim there's nothing fair about the ruins and upon succesfully exploring the dungeon Noctis would state his head hurts when he's out.]]
* AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence: He becomes [[spoiler:one with the spirit realm after his death]] to kill Ardyn and eventually reunite with Luna.
* AmericanKirbyIsHardcore: In ''Episode Duscae'', there was a surprisingly large gap between the way his character was portrayed Ray Chase compared to Tatsuhisa Suzuki. The English dub portrays Noctis as darker, moodier, and more sarcastic in contrast to his more playful depiction in the Japanese version. The gap was narrowed on both sides; official announcements stated that the English voice work in the demo was a rush-job and he was redirected to sound more light-hearted in the full game, and ''Brotherhood''[[note]]which is as of now Japanese-only[[/note]] showed Noctis to be a very troubled and withdrawn young man despite his bouts of childishness. He retains some traits of a deeper voice in battle.
* AncestralWeapon: His Royal Arms, which are the weapons wielded by the previous kings and queens of Lucis as well as [[spoiler: Luna's trident]]. They also manifest as his Armiger, ghostly blades that can be used to teleport Noctis around an area, shield him from harm, and attack enemies independently. In short, there's a reason why he and his father make up the page image.
* AnimeHair: Many fans have commented that it bears a striking resemblance to the hairstyle of [[Manga/{{Naruto}} Sasuke Uchiha]]. [[spoiler:He sports a much more reasonable hairstyle as a thirty year old.]]
* ArrangedMarriage: He is to marry Luna as part of the peace treaty between Lucis and Niflheim, which he didn't mind because [[PerfectlyArrangedMarriage he was in love with Luna]]. Unfortunately, it was a ruse by Niflheim to steal Lucis's PowerCrystal.
* AttentionWhore: Absolutely ''loves'' fishing, and he's ''very'' proud of his skills in it. To the point where he gets very pouty if his friends aren't watching him do it. There is even a Quest revolving around this.
* BadassBookworm: He was the top graduate in his class and a very powerful combatant on the battlefield.
* BadassInDistress:
** He is fatally injured during the Leviathan fight, but Luna heals [[CameBackStrong (and temporarily empowers)]] him.
** ''Episode Ignis'' involves Ignis coming to defend his unconscious body after the Leviathan fight from Ardyn and his Magitek Troopers.
* BeardOfSorrow: In the timeskip, [[spoiler:representative of his more somber and serious demeanor after reflecting on all the hardships he's suffered along with the knowledge that he's marching towards his own death]].
* BeneathTheMask: Creator/TetsuyaNomura notes that Noctis is not actually very cool but a bit shy and quirky.
* BestServedCold: He [[spoiler:waits 10 years gathering power from the Lucian Crystal]] to take his revenge on Ardyn.
* BlackMage: Closest thing this game has to one, since he's the only character with full access to offensive magical spells, as part of his royal abilities.
* BlessedWithSuck: The fate every future ruler of Lucis faces is a [[PowerDegeneration drastically shortened lifespan.]] Because Noctis could also meet this fate if he inherits the throne, Regis is torn on whether or not he should let Noctis become the next king.
* BrokenHero: Noctis is ''not'' in a good place after [[spoiler:Lunafreya's death]].
* CastFromLifespan: With the Ring of the Lucii, the ring-bearer is bestowed with vast power, able to cast powerful spells, construct highly elaborate Protects, and summon the “Old Wall” (statues of the old Lucian Kings that protect Insomnia, the capital of Lucis), but the caster is burdened with a rapidly depleted lifespan. In-game, using Ring Magic visibly causes his character model to show [[BodyHorror horrible burns and other nasty effects]].
* CelibateHero: His celibacy is involuntary as circumstances prevent him from having a meaningful romance with Luna; [[spoiler:he never had the chance to confess his true feelings for her, and by the time he is chronologically 30 towards the end of the game, he remains a virgin for the entirety of the story.]]
* TheChainsOfCommanding: Retaking Lucis means that there is little time for Noctis to grieve the deaths of his father [[spoiler:and fiancée]] (and that he may get killed fighting various literal ''gods'' to prove his worthiness). He's reluctant even to put on the [[OnlyTheChosenMayWield ring]] [[spoiler:Luna]] gave him while dying because of the bad memories associated with it.
* CharacterCatchphrase: Is partial to saying [[ThisIsForEmphasisBitch "Son of a bitch!"]] when things are going poorly or painfully, or both, [[{{Troll}} or if it's Ardyn]]. In ''Episode Duscae'', he would also say "That's all she wrote." after winning a battle.
* CharacterDevelopment: For most of the story, Noctis is a young man first and foremost, with insecurities compounded by his role as the heir to the throne in a time of war. He is neither fit nor ready to lead a nation, having difficulty with keeping himself level-headed in times of distress and either responding to intense circumstances with anger or uncertainty for a good chunk of the game. It isn't until he's [[spoiler:completely isolated on enemy territory, with only the Ring of the Lucii and his father's sword to defend himself]] that he starts to mature. It's very understated when played straight through, but it's hard not to notice it when you compare the beginning and the end of Chapter 13 alone. Noctis has grown a sense of clarity and purpose towards his mission, assuming a role of leadership among his group of friends once he's reunited with them and standing firm even in the wake of everything that's happened up to that point. [[{{NiceJobFixingItVillain}} Perhaps being taunted constantly by the man single-handedly responsible for ruining your life over the PA system]] [[{{KnightInSourArmor}} really puts your life into perspective.]] Then the following chapter builds on that development, with Noctis [[spoiler:emerging from the Crystal ten years later far more seasoned than before. It's very apparent that he didn't awaken in the same state of mind that he was when he left. He has aged in both mind and body, with a sense of wisdom fit for royalty and a steeled sense of resolve towards his destiny as the True King.]] This is even lampshaded by the others at a point.
* ChickMagnet: Luna is his fiancee, Iris has a crush on him, and ''Brotherhood'' often shows him surrounded by girls at school.
* TheChosenOne: He is prophesied to become the True King that will [[spoiler:purge Eos of the Starscourge.]]
-->''Fifteen years ago'' (…) ''the stars chose the son to be their light.''
* ClothingDamage: In the ''Omen'' trailer, he gradually goes through this until [[ShirtlessScene he completely loses his shirt]].
* CombinationAttack: Noctis can do them with his buddies, including the classic [[VideoGame/ChronoTrigger X-Strike]] with Ignis.
* ColorMotif: In ''XV''[='=]s universe, the color black is associated with the Lucian royal family; only those of high status are permitted to wear it.
* TheComicallySerious: In the ''Brotherhood'' OVA, he maintains a grim, stony expression throughout most of the first episode, including a scene where he's picking vegetables off his burger and dropping them on Ignis's plate.
* ContrastingSequelProtagonist: Noctis has been made to be quite the departure from [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyXIII Claire Farron A.K.A Lightning]]. Lightning, was a [[ExperiencedProtagonist seasoned]], [[ConsummateProfessional professional]], and [[IceQueen cold]] at almost all times in her game while Noctis is [[ComingOfAgeStory developing]], [[BrilliantButLazy juvenile]], and quite [[NiceGuy kindhearted]] throughout his story until the final stretch. Lightning, representing LightIsGood in her entire aesthetic both in and out of battle, was a soldier whose parents died prior to ''XIII'', leading to her PromotionToParent; Noctis, who represents DarkIsNotEvil, is nearly as experienced in combat as her despite being royalty and ending up as a SpoiledSweet, with his father dying during ''XV''. Lastly, while both of their stories featured heavily BecauseDestinySaysSo themes, with them as the resident MessianicArchetype of their respective settings, Lighting was able to [[ScrewDestiny defy and change her fate for the better]], while Noctis ultimately [[spoiler: [[YouCantFightFate had no choice but to submit to his purpose in order to save the world.]]]]
* CoolCar: Gets chauffeured around in a souped up luxury car called the Regalia (or drive it himself should the player choose to. At night, Noct drives it by default). He also owns an Audi R8 called "The Star of Lucis". In-universe the car manufacturer is said to have teamed up with the Royal Art Society of Lucis to create the car to celebrate the 20th birthday of Prince Noctis. It appears in ''[[Anime/KingsglaiveFinalFantasyXV Kingsglaive]]''; Drautos uses it to pick Nyx up in after the latter gets reassigned to the Crownsguard. The car is later "borrowed" by Libertus to get Luna out of Insomnia once Nyx uses the Ring of the Lucii. The R8 is also available to purchase in real-life, [[SarcasmMode for only a measly]] [[MoneyToBurn half-million dollars]].
* CoolSword: His signature Engine Blade, which can siphon magical energy from enemies. It can even be upgraded to the Ultima Blade by Cid.
* CosmicPlaything: [[spoiler:Noctis's status as the ChosenOne is the result of the resident JerkassGods choosing him as a sacrifice to give up his life in order to save the world from a plague brought about by a previous war of theirs. Many of the misfortunes he goes through during the game are the result of people grooming him to fulfill that destiny. He overcomes it in the second ending.]]
* DarkIsNotEvil: He's dark-haired, wears all black and talks about death. And a sweet guy.
* DeathIsTheOnlyOption: When Noctis learns from Bahamut that the only way to defeat Ardyn for good and end the starscourge [[spoiler: is for him to die, this deeply perturbs Noct, with his facial expressions clearly expressing his very strong desire to live.]] When he comes back to Eos, he has come to terms with what he must do and is fully committed to seeing his destiny through.
%%* DeflectorShields: His {{Flying Weapon}}s act this way for him with his Armiger ability.
* DiedHappilyEverAfter: The last we see him, he is [[spoiler: with his beloved Luna, happily sharing a romantic kiss with her during their wedding in the afterlife.]] In the alternate ending [[spoiler:it's averted, where he survives thanks to Ignis.]]
* DisappearedDad: His father Regis dies during the invasion and destruction of Insomnia.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: He's not a fan of vegetables, to the point where he went out of his way to surgically remove his vegetables from a burger in the anime. In game, there is even a few quests revolving around chefs trying to get him to eat his veggies and doesn't even want to hear the word beans. He ''especially'' hates carrots. They can be grown fresh in Cape Caem, but are unusable in Ignis's cooking due to Noctis's powerful aversion. Ignis's conditions when fighting him as the OptionalBoss of ''Episode Ignis'' are all about getting him to eat his vegetables. Likewise, a sidequest shows he's not too fond of beans. When a diner chef sends him on a quest to retrieve a missing shipment of beans, Noctis reluctantly agrees to at least try them.
* DoomedHometown: Shortly after leaving for Altissia, his hometown of Insomnia is invaded and set aflame by the Empire. His father Regis was also killed in the invasion.
* DressingToDie: Before the group goes out on their last mission together they swap out their outfits for suits designed for the Kingsglaive while Noctis puts on an elegant raiment fit for a King.
%%* DrivesLikeCrazy: According to Ignis. Gameplay-wise, he's a pretty good driver, though that could just be because Ignis hates driving at night.
* DueToTheDead: In the epilogue of ''Dawn of the Future'', he [[spoiler:gives Ardyn a grand funeral, recognizing him as the ''true'' Founder King of Lucis]].
* EarnYourHappyEnding:
** In [[spoiler:the second ending. While Luna still dies, the result is much happier for him thanks to Ignis.]]
** Played straight in ''The Dawn of the Future'', where he [[spoiler:finally marries Luna and lives happily ever after with her.]]
* EmotionallyTongueTied: He has a very hard time expressing his feelings to others. Whenever his friends poke fun at his upcomming wedding to Luna he tries to play it off cool even though he's hopelessly enamored. This is played for drama [[spoiler:during the last campfire he has with his friends, he does a lot of mumbling and stuttering. You can really see him trying his hardest to tell his friends how much they meant to him in his life, and how grateful he is for everything they've done for him.]]
* ElementalPowers: He can draw elemental energy from certain locations, which can then be refined into spells.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: He faces his own death with dignity and resolve, bravely and selflessly [[spoiler:committing an honorable suicide to restore balance to the world and finish off Ardyn for good.]]
* {{Fanboy}}: Of the ''Franchise/AssassinsCreed'' series, as he and Prompto were ''really'' enthusiastic about the Assassin's Festival.
* FaustianRebellion: He's TheChosenOne preordained to destroy the Starscourge. That said, [[spoiler:in ''Dawn of the Future'', when it's revealed Bahamut is the true evil here, he fights to destroy TheChooserOfTheOne, Bahamut]].
* FightingYourFriend: [[spoiler:Attacks Prompto in Chapter 11 after Ardyn creates an illusion that causes them to switch appearances.]]
* FlashStep: Noctis's Phase command can teleport him out of the way and thus drains MP when used; Noctis can also warp offensively to attack and strategically by teleporting to a sword thrown to a high vantage point.
* FlyingWeapon: Can control his weapons telepathically with the Armiger ability. It's said that this ability is a SecretArt passed down by the [[RoyalBlood royal family]] and the high council of Lucis.
* {{Foil}}: In comparison to [[AllLovingHero Luna]]--who is essentially a diplomat between mankind and the gods--Noctis embodies a more human, pragmatic side of Eos's power. After her attempts to negotiate with Leviathan fail, Noctis is empowered to force the issue.
* ForcedToWatch: The death of [[spoiler:Luna at Ardyn's hands]]. All he can do is say nothing as [[spoiler:his bride-to-be gets stabbed to death and Ardyn mocks him]].
* GentlemanAndAScholar: He graduated the head of his class and his classmates described him as a gentle, well-groomed, well-mannered young man with a love for animals and a commitment to community service.
* TheGoodKing: [[LikeFatherLikeSon Like his father before him]], Noctis fits this trope to a T, having no qualms [[spoiler:sacrificing himself in the end for the good of everyone, becoming the hero of the masses and the savior of the world by the end of the story.]]
* TheGunslinger: A trait at the mercy of the player. Noctis has access to ''a lot'' of different weapons, pistols and sniper rifles included, so it ultimately depends on the playstyle. In the "Omen" trailer, Noctis is seen taking up an assault rifle when he loses his powers against an enemy platoon.
* HandicappedBadass: Noctis suffered a leg injury as a child that left him wheelchair-bound for a long while. Even after he recovered enough to walk, he still has a noticeable limp and occasionally stops to massage or nurse a pain in his bad knee if he's been moving around a lot. His royal raiment even comes complete with a knee brace that's more compact not unlike his father's, albeit a more subtle one resembling a kneepad rather than a full leg-encompassing one.
* TheHeroDies: [[spoiler:Is forced to sacrifice himself to stop Ardyn in the main ending. Averted in Episode Ignis' alternate ending and in ''Dawn to the Future'', where he survives.]]
* HeroesGoneFishing: A literal case with him. Noctis is an avid angler, and gets very excited at the prospect of being able to fish whenever you approach a fishing spot.
* HeroicBSOD:
%%** He goes through one when [[spoiler:Luna]] is killed.
** Seemingly goes through another after [[spoiler:being tricked into almost killing Prompto]]; according to Aranea, he was so worried about him that he couldn't even speak properly.
* HeroicRROD:
** Each of the Royal Arms have their power CastFromLifespan, and take off a small percentage of your health each time you attack with them. As such, it's not recommended to Warp Strike with them, or fight crowds with them (as it's percentage based, higher damage does more recoil, and attacking a crowd once is treated like attacking one multiple times). That said, plenty of health regen can mitigate it.
** At the end of the game, [[spoiler:Noctis is killed due to him taking the power of the past kings.]]
* HesBack: After ten years, he reunites with his closest friends, ready to fulfill his destiny, though the welcome back party is relatively tame, for someone who had been gone for a decade.
* HumbleHero: As a student, he was basically the most powerful and important person on campus, but never acted ostentatious or shallow with his classmates. In fact he avoided people who just liked him for his regal status, and displayed absolutely no contempt with people who could be considered social outcasts like Prompto, and was instead impartial and inclusive with him.
* HyperspaceArsenal: It is a signature power of the royal family of Lucis to summon and control weapons for themselves and their allies.
* IdenticalGrandson: [[spoiler:As Ardyn points out in the ''Dawn of the Future'' novel, he's the spitting image of his ancestor, the Founder King, Somnus Lucis Caelum. Justified because Bahamut, presumably, created both in his own image]].
* ILetGwenStacyDie: After he receives a vision of Luna on board a train [[spoiler:after her death]], he breaks down in tears and [[HeroicSelfDeprecation puts himself down for not being able to be there for her.]]
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: Even his casual outfit looks like something you see in the street with a fisherman jacket over it. However those clothes like his friends have their own status boost and are this world's equivalent of fancy leather armor. Also subverted, since in a series that has become downright infamous for this trope it's also possible for Noctis to switch into some surprisingly mundane outfits like a letter jacket or a t-shirt and baseball cap.
* ImpliedDeathThreat: First Secretary Camelia Claustra gives a subtle hint at one to Noctis during negotiations and, depending on your answer, she will either be impressed with you and compare you to your father or mock you for your perceived inexperience at diplomacy.
-->'''Claustra''': My duty is to my citizens. Should any harm befall them, there will be a reckoning for both King and Oracle.
* InSeriesNickname: Pretty much everyone around his age calls him "Noct".
* ItHasBeenAnHonor: [[spoiler:As Noctis prepares to end the Starscourge by killing himself, he says his farewell to his close friends. Their body language when they salute to him, as their King, invokes this trope.]]
-->'''Noctis''': Prompto, Gladio, Ignis… I leave it to you. Walk tall, my friends.
* ItsPersonal: At the start of the game, Noctis wants to avenge his homeland's destruction and his father's death. Following the events of Chapter 9, [[spoiler:nothing less than a horrible and gruesome death for Ardyn will suffice to the point where Noctis attempts to kill him ''immediately on sight.'']]
* ItSucksToBeTheChosenOne: [[spoiler:Noct goes through untold suffering on his journey, ultimately sacrificing his life fulfilling his destiny.]] As the first "Dawn" trailer states:
-->''The father could but hold him and mourn his fate.''
* JackOfAllStats: Noctis can use all weapon types and magic but his companions have specialties with certain arms to set them apart from him.
* JavelinThrower: Noctis can throw his spear at enemies when he parries their attack or for certain combos.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Definitely has his Jerkass moments, but deeply cares for his friends and subjects.
* KindheartedCatLover: [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MI__j-qn-FQ He has a very sweet and cute interaction with a cat he takes care of by providing it with food, which he clearly enjoyed doing.]]
* KingIncognito: He has to move covertly among the general populace and be careful not to draw suspicion to himself or else the Caelum line will end abruptly with him as he has no heirs or descendants himself. Then again, this is made slightly easier with [[ReportsOfMyDeathWereGreatlyExaggerated the false reports that he died]] towards the beginning of the game.
* KingInTheMountain: Noctis spends 10 years in the spirit realm gathering the power he needs to defeat Ardyn and when he reappears in Eos he is shocked to find an adult Talcott ready to pick him up in a truck.
* LadyAndKnight: Gladio is the Knight to Noctis's King. He acts as Noctis's sword and shield [[DeclarationOfProtection having sworn to protect him from harm and rid him of his enemies.]]
* LastOfHisKind: Prior to the start of the game, he becomes the last Lucian heir with his father's death. [[spoiler:The Lucian line is then extinguished, following Noct's death.]]
* LeeroyJenkins: While he's normally putting up a facade of being calm and level-headed, he gets awfully confident once his powers kick in. His gang more or less help keep him in line.
-->'''Ignis:''' Any plan of attack?\
'''Noctis:''' Plow right through them.
* LetsGetDangerous: He was really laid back at the start of the game since he was just off to get married. When Insomnia fell, he says the Empire will wish they had a ceasefire to protect them and proceed storming through a squad of them to get back to Insomnia.
* LightningBruiser: He is capable of inflicting serious damage and with his teleportation he is able to move around very quickly.
* LikeFatherLikeSon: Invoked. WordOfGod states that Noctis's appearance [[spoiler:post PlotRelevantAgeUp was a conscious throwback to his father's]].
* LimitBreak: [[FlyingWeapon Armiger]], which summons weapons known as Royal Arms that will [[LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe protect him]] and [[StormOfBlades attack enemies]]. It can be followed up by ''Armiger Chain'', a move in which he and any active party members in range take up the Royal Arms one by one and rapidly strike the enemy with each weapon in succession. The UpdatedReRelease introduces ''Armiger Unleashed'', which is unlocked by collecting all 13 Royal Arms and equipping Noctis with the Founder King's Sigil. It allows him to perform combos in Armiger mode by timing Triangle (or Circle) presses, as well as providing him with his own Techniques.
* LivingBattery: In order to use magic, Noctis's party must be near him because he is the one who grants them the power, similar to his father in ''[[Anime/KingsglaiveFinalFantasyXV Kingsglaive]]'' (though Regis does not have to be close to the Glaives, showing more advanced control). This is exemplified in Chapter 13 where [[spoiler:Imperial tech seals his powers and Noctis and his allies are left absolutely defenseless without his ability to summon weapons for them.]]
* LonelyRichKid: ''Brotherhood'' shows him as being rather isolated at school, and frequently standing around by himself.
* MagicKnight: He's proficient in swordplay, magic and summoning Astrals.
* ManlyFacialHair: As a youth, he has a [[PrettyBoy delicate]], [[{{Bishonen}} young]], and [[{{Shonen}} boyish]] appearance. Following [[spoiler:his time in the spirit world for 10 years]], [[http://vignette3.wikia.nocookie.net/finalfantasy/images/9/93/Regis_and_Older_Noctis.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20160817195146 his beard is coarser]] and more ''Franchise/JohnWick''-esque, reminiscent of his father.
* ManlyTears: After Noctis defeats the demon in Episode 5 of ''Brotherhood'' he remembers his father’s promise to protect him. Overcome with grief, he collapses on his knees and sobs over the loss of his father. During the mid-credits stinger, [[spoiler:he also visibly tears up as he struggles to express his gratitude to Gladio, Ignis and Prompto for sticking with him through thick and thin before he allows himself to die to save Eos]].
* MasterOfAll: Can use any weapon his partners use, practices elemancy and magic only accessible to his bloodline and he can drive.
* MeaningfulName: His full name means "light of the night sky", to complement Luna's name.
* MessianicArchetype: He's [[ChosenOne chosen by the Crystal]] to bring an end to the Starscourge (a disease which is very similar in both name and appearance to the aforementioned Geostigma) by fulfilling the Calling of his royal line, seeking the favor of the Astral gods, and using the power of the Crystal. Near the end of the game, [[spoiler:he learns of his true purpose -- he must give his life to call forth divine Providence if he is to destroy the [[AntiChrist Accursed]] and end the Scourge. And so, the game ends with [[HeroicSacrifice his ritual sacrifice on his throne]], after which [[DiedHappilyEverAfter he and his dead fiancee's spirits are shown appearing as if at their wedding]]. On top of that the fact that he's grown a beard and messy longer hair at the time of his sacrifice means he even LooksLikeJesus.]] He's sometimes referred to by titles like "King of Kings" or "the Son" to make sure no one overlooks the connection. Then you take the ''Dawn of the Future'' novel into account, and learn that [[spoiler:the TopGod, Bahamut, has a face that looks exactly like his under his mask, and that, presumably, Bahamut crafted both him and Somnus in his own image]].
* MilesToGoBeforeISleep: [[spoiler:He must spend 10 years in the spirit world to gather enough power to kill Ardyn for good, knowing this will also mean his own death.]]
* MissingMom: His mother Aulea died when he was still an infant, but all that's mentioned of her existence is a single line from Ignis about her death.
* MommasBoy: A gender-flipped parent version. He's extremely devoted to his father. He dreads the prospect of becoming king because it would mean his father would have to die first, and when the news of his father's murder reaches him he's devastated.
* MultiMeleeMaster: Noctis can wield a multitude of [[HeroesPreferSwords swords]], [[{{BFS}} greatswords]], spears, [[DeviousDaggers daggers]], [[LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe shields]]. [[TheEngineer machines]] and guns. With his [[AncestralWeapon Royal Arms]] he can also wield an axe, a [[CarryABigStick mace]], a DoubleWeapon, a MagicWand, a [[ChainsawGood Chainsaw Sword]], a [[FumaShuriken shuriken]], a [[AutomaticCrossbows crossbow]] and a [[KatanasAreJustBetter katana]].
* MusclesAreMeaningless: His arms are sticks compared to [[HeroicBuild Gladio's]]. That said, he can parry the fist of a giant. The game actually [[LampshadeHanging lampshades this]] when visiting Lestallum:
-->'''Noctis:''' Damn, this place is hot!
'''Gladiolus:''' [[WalkingShirtlessScene Just take your shirt off]].\
'''Noctis:''' Like you? [[EveryoneHasStandards No way]].\
'''Gladiolus:''' What, too embarrassed to show your scrawny body?\
'''Noctis:''' Hey, I got muscle! ...You just can't see it.\
'''Gladiolus:''' [[YouKeepTellingYourselfThat If you say so]].
* MundaneUtility: In addition to storing the most powerful weapons in all of Eos, the Armiger is also home to his fishing rod! Yup, he conjures his rod the same way he would any other weapon.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: After Noctis [[spoiler:accidentally attacks Prompto, causing him to fall off the train]], Noctis is clearly distressed. The tone of his voice makes it clear that Noct is beating himself up over what he had done. In ''Episode Prompto'', Aranea says that he was so worried about his safety that he couldn't even speak.
* MyLifeFlashedBeforeMyEyes: When Bahamut reveals to him what he must do after he got stuck in the spirit world, he begins to realize that his destiny is to [[spoiler: die for the sake of everyone.]] He starts to think back on the memories he had with everyone and we get to see [[FlashBack flashbacks]] of his memories with the people who were most precious to him throughout his life. [[spoiler:In the ending, he also experiences this as he prepares for the spirit of his father to deal him the fatal blow that would send him to the Astral Realm where he can kill Ardyn for good.]]
* NearDeathExperience: A Marilith almost killed him when he was but a small child. This is what sends him into the dream realm in the Platinum Demo.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: He never got to tell [[spoiler:Luna his true feelings for her before Ardyn kills her]].
* NiceGuy: One look at him, and one would be pressed to think that he's brooding, moody and aloof. In truth, he's very friendly, down-to-earth and perky. Not without his giant ego, but he doesn't let that get in the way of his friends. That said, he doesn't have a ''lot'' of friends due to his lineage, as he hates exploiting it. As Prompto learns, all it takes to be his friend is just {{be yourself}} and ''talk to him'' -- nothing else.
* NiceToTheWaiter: As the sole child of the king and heir to the throne, it's fair to say that he has a fairly affluent/upper class lifestyle, but he treats his servants and commoners with decency and respect.
* NoHeroDiscount: Justified. While Noctis is the Crown Prince of Lucis and king-in-waiting after the death of Regis, no one in the country does him any favors and ask him to do petty jobs for small rewards. The justification though is that most of them don't ''know'' he's the Crown Prince and presume he's just a civilian, and Noctis prefers it that way since he lets him blend in and avoid suspicion and detection. The main people who know he's the prince are the gang at Hammerhead, and Cid [[ScrewPolitenessImASenior has no interests in giving the gang a discount]] since he thinks they should make their own way in the world, and he's told Takka the same for dealing with them. The only other person in on the secret is Dino, who expressly blackmails Noctis into doing errands for him on threat of exposing his identity via the press.
* NoHeroToHisValet: Noctis is a king, a powerful fighter with a direct line to a group of PhysicalGods, but that doesn't stop Ignis, Gladiolus and Prompto from snarking at his expense.
* NoJustNoReaction: Noctis can dismiss Iris’s flirting with him almost word for word when she brings up their time being spent together as almost like a date.
* NostalgiaHeaven: After he [[AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence ascends to the afterlife]] he gets to finally reunite with Luna and enjoy a happy ending with her.
* NotAMorningPerson: He's definitely not the type to get out of bed early. In the novel, when the alarm goes off, he hits snooze, and Ignis has to remind him to wake up. In the demo, he clearly wants to stay in bed more, only getting up because of his friends pestering him. You could say his three hobbies in life are fishing, playing video games, and sleeping.
* OhCrap: He is utterly shocked when he hears that Insomnia is destroyed.
* OneManArmy: Even alone he climbs his way up a daemon infested MT factory with his ring and later [[spoiler: his father's sword]].
* PerkyGoth: Despite his moody demeanor and love of black clothing, he's actually a pretty nice guy.
* PickyEater: The first episode of ''Brotherhood'' shows him disdainfully plucking all the vegetables from his hamburger, putting them on Ignis's plate. Apparently, poor Ignis has been trying to get him to eat his veggies for ''years''.
* PlotRelevantAgeUp:
** At the climax of the ''Platinum Demo''. [[spoiler:Young Noct is confronted by an Iron Giant, and the odds are definitely not in his favor. Through Carbuncle, he hears his father telling him that he alone controls his dreams. Back in the dreamscape, he proclaims he's not afraid and then transforms into the Noctis we know before proceeding to lay waste to the enemy.]]
** Later on, Noctis gets [[spoiler:stuck in the Crystal for 10 years and comes out looking very unkempt. The very ending of the game makes it clear that he still looks youthful without the beard.]]
* PrettyBoy: Whether as a baby-faced 20 year old with boyish good looks or a rugged mid-aged 30 year old with full ManlyFacialHair. He's a ''Final Fantasy'' protagonist; this was kind of a given. [[DarkActionGirl Aranea]] [[DragonKnight Highwind]] is quick to [[LampshadeHanging lampshade it]]. [[spoiler:He's [[ManlyFacialHair grown out of it]] after the TimeSkip.]]
-->'''Aranea:''' Hey, pretty boy!
* PrincelyYoungMan: He’s a young man fresh out of adolescence and a prince who has been groomed to succeed his father as the future King. Noctis's royal upbringing is said to shine through, as reflected in his body language, poise, and posture in contrast to his team, reflecting his regal status.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: Like his father before him, Noctis is the King of his nation and his people, and is a majorly strong warrior. [[spoiler:Even with just his father's sword and ring he can hold his own trapped in a maze against a horde of twisted MT's and daemons.]]
* RavenHairIvorySkin: Noctis is an extremely good-looking dark-haired youth with fair skin.
* RebelPrince: Noctis is said to have a rebellious attitude, disliking the strict rules of his kingdom and acting as he pleases. This sometimes gets his friends into trouble. His father refers to him as his wayward son as well.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Nomura said in [[http://gematsu.com/2013/07/nomura-talks-final-fantasy-xv-kingdom-hearts-iii-at-japan-expo this interview]] that Noctis’s eyes become red when he uses his warp ability. [[spoiler:They also take on an eldritch purple glow when he summons Astrals.]]
* TheRedMage: He's the one who crafts the spells the party can equip, and it's suggested most of the team's healing items are actually drinks he enchants with healing magic.
* ReportsOfMyDeathWereGreatlyExaggerated: He was inaccurately reported to be among the dead during the fall of Insomnia.
%%* {{Revenge}}: Noctis's motivation is this, after his kingdom is invaded by those who seek the power of its crystal.
* RoyalBlood: A prerequisite, apparently, in order to be able to use the full power of the Ring of the Lucii.
* SanitySlippage: Noctis spends most of the game's main plot under considerable stress. By Chapter 12, he begins audibly losing it after [[spoiler:Ardyn dupes him into attacking Prompto and knocking him off a speeding train.]]
* SavingTheWorld: Fulfills his destiny as per the prophecy [[spoiler: but at the cost of his own life.]]
* ScrewDestiny: [[spoiler: Starts to realize he can do this in ''Dawn of the Future'' after getting advice from his father's spirit, and opts do so when he stays his hand after confronting Ardyn instead of killing him as the prophecy demanded, instead averting the entire SelfSacrificeScheme.]]
* SealedGoodInACan: [[spoiler:He spends the ten years between Chapters 13 and 14 inside the Crystal, gathering the power needed to destroy Ardyn once and for all.]]
* SelfSacrificeScheme: King Regis knew that Noctis would have to give up his life to save the land, and Luna also knew since she was an oracle, and her job was actually to help aid the chosen one in securing enough power in order to complete the task of ridding the world of daemons. Both Regis and Luna never told Noctis about his true fate, leading him to believe that he was actually being groomed to be king over Lucis and that he was supposed to marry Luna and rule honorably. In reality, he was being groomed to die.
* SerendipitousSurvival: [[ReactionShot The look on his face]] [[BigWhat when Ignis delivers him the news that Insomnia had been attacked is priceless.]]
* SeriousBusiness: One quest involves Noctis catching a particular fish because someone challenged him to do it, and his pride as an angler means he can't let it go.
* SchoolIdol: He was very clearly the most popular and admired student in school. Being a member of the Royal Family, having impeccable good looks, and almost certainly the highest net worth in his country certainly helps.
* SharpDressedMan: An Adonis in an expensive suit. Noctis was first seen wearing for a deleted scene from ''Versus XIII'', and two of his available outfits consist of suits. One is the Royal Raiment, which is available as either a pre-order bonus or purchasable DLC[[note]]It has one of the most useful abilities for exploration when you equip the "(No Jacket)" version: Noctis gets the ability to sprint infinitely without using stamina. With the Jacket on, however, it increases his magic power moderately.[[/note]] The other is the Kingly Raiment, which can also be obtained as a pre-order bonus or [[spoiler:unlocked during the last chapter of the main story]].
* ShellShockedVeteran: As stated by WordOfGod, his appearance after the timeskip is meant to call the image of one. He also has some residual PTSD issues from the attack that crippled him in childhood.
* ShirtlessScene: [[ClothingDamage Noctis’s shirt comes apart]] fighting Niflheim soldiers in the Omen Trailer, [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-lMUv-ioD0 leaving his bare upper body exposed.]] Which quickly lapses into semi-FanDisservice [[spoiler:as you watch him get possessed and kill Luna.]]
* SingleTargetSexuality: Has only ever had eyes for Luna since he was a child. He's aware but dismissive of Iris's crush on him and doesn't take too kindly to Aranea hitting on him, even in jest.
* TheSlacker: Noctis is so laid back and easy going he can come off as lazy sometimes. If he weren’t a Prince, he might just be fishing, playing video games all day, and sleeping.
* {{Sleepyhead}}: From the trailers, it seems he can fall asleep just about anywhere (in his car, on his throne, leaning on a fence), and has done so in every one of his appearances.
** [[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] in the ''Platinum Demo'' as Carbuncle outright calls him the trope name. Considering the demo takes place in his dreams, they have a point.
** The [[AllThereInTheManual OVA]] (and a scene in the demo itself) implies, however, that young Noctis wasn't simply asleep during that dream sequence, but ''in a coma and on the verge of death.''
** ''Brotherhood'' Episode 2 has him ''sleeping through a near-car crash''.
%%* SleepCute: [[spoiler:With Luna]] in the game's ending.
%%* SlouchOfVillainy: And he's the ''hero.''
* SpoiledSweet: He's the Crown Prince to the Lucian throne and his parental figures Regis and Ignis doting on him all his life, with Gladio even chastising Ignis for constantly spoiling Noctis in the ''Brotherhood'' anime. Yet, he grew up kind and modest who never acted shallow or flaunted his status, and even prefers to be [[WhatsUpKingDude casual to everyone]], though he still has streaks of [[BrilliantButLazy laziness]] and [[RebelPrince rebellious behavior]] because of their pampering.
%%* StarPower: Noctis's [[SummonMagic Astrals]] are stars.
* StormOfBlades: Noctis's signature ability is the Armiger, when many swords and spears float around him and act as shields, attacking enemies of their own accord.
%%* StraightMan: The developers stated that he was written to serve as one to Prompto's antics.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Not so obvious at the beginning of the game, but [[spoiler:post-timeskip Noctis greatly resembles a younger version of his father Regis.]] With the release of the Episode Ardyn trailer, pre-timeskip Noctis also takes after [[spoiler:Ardyn's brother Somnus.]]
* SwordAndSorcerer: During the Leviathan fight, he backs up Luna's initial magic blast with [[DeathByAThousandCuts a lot]] of Warp Strikes, as she heals him from the sidelines.
* SwordBeam: His Royal Cleave Technique fires a massive vertical beam of energy reminiscent of [[VideoGame/FinalFantasyVIII Squall's Blasting Zone]].
* TakeUpMySword:
** Literally takes up his father’s sword in the game in addition to succeeding him as King of Lucis. [[spoiler:Inverted in the ending, as he hands his sword to his father's spirit so the latter can complete his HeroicSacrifice.]]
** He also takes up [[spoiler:Luna's trident after the latter's death]].
* TallDarkAndHandsome: After the timeskip. While he's only 176cm (5'9") and shorter than both Gladiolus and Ignis, everything else checks out, and he carries himself with a dignified air. Also applies in his youth, as an attendant during the Moogle Festival will call him dark and mysterious.
* TeleportSpam: He can instantly teleport to the location of any weapon he has thrown. Additionally, he has short-range rapid teleport abilities in close-quarters combat, serving as a dodge mechanic exclusive to him.
* TemptingFate: One of the last things his father hears him say is "Drautos, he's in your hands now." Titus Drautos is none other than General Glauca, the main villain of ''Kingsglaive'' and the one who kills Regis.
* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: Noctis frequently throws one of his weapons in combos, and they always land point end first.
* TimePassageBeard: Noctis comes out of the Crystal with long unruly hair and newfound facial hair to show the ten years that passed. He cleans up most of it but leaves the beard alone.
%%* ToughLeaderFacade: Noct feels he has to look and act serious publicly because of his duty.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Especially enjoys comfort foods and dishes reminiscent of homecooked meals. One of them is also a cake made by his fiancee.
* TragicBromance: His friendship with Gladio, Ignis, and Prompto is extremely close. During [[spoiler: their last campfire together]], it's clear how much they all meant to each other. They know that Noct is about to [[spoiler: die and are mourning it, but they are grateful that they had so many memories together that they could cherish.]] In the alternate ending [[spoiler:it's averted, as events are changed thanks to Ignis.]]
* TrashOfTheTitans: As shown in Brotherhood, he never bothered to tidy up his apartment and lived in take-out food until Ignis cleaned up after him and give him decent food.
* {{Tsundere}}:
** A type 2. Noctis is an easygoing, kind, humble, young man who is loyal to his friends, accepting and non-judgmental to social misfits, caring and protective towards his people, willing to take the blame and punishment in place of others so that they are safe, and has a strong sense of justice and integrity. While he is a very kind, sweet, generous, and gentle guy, he has his grumpy moments and is prone to mood swings, responding in a snappish tone when more polite responses could be used. This can be seen towards his father during their final farewell scene the moment Drautos calls out to Noctis at the stairs. Noctis is also snappy to Prompto when his friend inquires of Noctis’s messages to Luna, and towards Ignis in the ''Brotherhood'' Ignis episode when the young advisor was giving Noctis a report on the Kingdom and his weakening father, as well as many other moments.
** Seems to be a bit of the Type 1 kind towards Luna. Whenever he's asked about his impending marriage, he tries to shrug it off, but anytime Umbra shows up with the notebook he uses to chat with Luna, he glances around to make sure his friends aren't watching too closely, then eagerly snatches it up.
* TurnTheOtherCheek: Ravus is quite mean and condescending towards Noctis, helping to destroy Insomnia, take over Lucis, murder his father, deem him unworthy of his father’s glaive after having stolen it and despite Noctis being its true owner, and attempting to steal the Ring of the Lucii which is Noct’s birthright. Much of it is out of a petty grudge he has against the Caelum family of which Noct is innocent. [[EasilyForgiven Noct has no ill will towards him and even thanks him for all he had done, even though most of his actions we have seen were meant to hurt him.]]
* UnskilledButStrong: His fighting style pretty much boils down to "wave the weapon in the direction of the enemy", especially compared to the other three when you control them.
* UsedToBeMoreSocial: According to the “Final Fantasy XV Prologue: Parting Ways”, Noctis was once known to be a lively child until the attack from the Marilith caused him to become more withdrawn. This is due to the implication that he was close to many of the servants who died. This incident forced him to realize that the world was not a safe place. [[NeverBeHurtAgain Him becoming more reclusive is almost certainly out of fear of losing people close to him for his sake.]]
* VitriolicBestBuds: Noctis and Gladio may have their differences and do fight every now and then, [[ChildhoodFriends but they always remain friends throughout it all no matter what]] and have each other's back in battle.
* VocalDissonance: Oddly enough, his voice in the English version of ''Episode Duscae'', provided by Ray Chase, is rather deep and gravelly, if young sounding, to the point some have compared him to a teenage Batman. It's been almost entirely done away with in the final game where his overall voice is much higher-pitched and more cheerful. [[TheGadfly Except]] [[{{Troll}} when dealing]] [[AxCrazy with Ardyn]]. His growl also tends to come back when he's just really angry in general, such as when he first finds out about the fate of Insomnia and [[spoiler:when arguing with Gladio on the train after Luna's death.]] And it comes back in full after the TimeSkip.
* VocalEvolution: In ''Episode Duscae'', Noctis has a rather prominent deep, gutteral voice voice to the point that players would often confuse him with Gladio. In the final game, his voice is much lighter and youthful, although some of that gruffness comes back after the timeskip.
%%* WaistcoatOfStyle: Wears one as part of the Royal Raiment (No Jacket) outfit.
* WalkingArmory: A rare magical example, his weapons being able to appear on a whim.
* WarriorPrince: In his case a very strong requirement. Once Regis kicks the bucket it will be Noctis's responsibility to fight against Niflheim and that includes on the battlefield.
* WellDoneSonGuy: Noctis grew up idolizing his father as a role model and saw him as his personal hero, being the most influential person in his life. [[SoProudOfYou Regis’s letter to Luna expressed his thoughts on how proud he was of his son despite his wayward behavior.]]
* WhatsUpKingDude: Thanks to many outside the Crown City not knowing who the prince is/what he looks like, commoners have incredibly easy access to Noctis and are ridiculously casual with him (not that he minds; in fact, he prefers it that way). Dino blackmailing him while later talking to him like he’s a best bud, Vyv joking about giving him over to Niflheim, Sania giving him out assignments to do as if he’s a student of hers, and Prompto slapping him on the buttocks whenever he wants to among others. It’s very easy to hear someone snarking at him and his relationship to many people in Lucis is less King/Citizen and more Employee/Employer with him willing to help people out no matter what they offer him.
* WhenHeSmiles:
** As mentioned above, he's usually straight-faced and a bit moody, but when he does smile… ''[[http://66.media.tumblr.com/06e30342df365ffe25d1a5fbb2b19665/tumblr_o3p8ycxnVm1u3o7smo1_540.png damn.]]''
** Especially towards the end, during the campfire scene. It's simultaneously beautiful but also heartbreaking.
%%* WhenYouComingHomeDad: Suffered from this as a child, according to ''Platinum Demo''.
* WiseBeyondTheirYears: One of the perks of having the Ring of the Lucii is that the collective wisdom and power of previous Kings is passed down to the Ringbearer, [[TheWisePrince the current one being Noctis]], making each successor essentially wiser and stronger than the previous one.
* WouldHitAGirl: He doesn't hesitate fighting Aranea, one of his parries consists of grabbing her and smashing her face on the pavement.
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: At the start of the game, Noct can't return home to Insomnia after his father is killed. At first.
* YouKilledMyFather: His father Regis was killed during Insomnia's destruction at the hands of Niflheim and it serves as one of Noctis's motivations to avenge Regis's death.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: Noctis had no idea his days were numbered until [[spoiler:the very end of his life, while Regis knew when he discovered he was the chosen one and Luna knew as well due to her status as an oracle.]] Justified however as they wanted him to live as normal and happy a life as possible before he has to fulfill his destiny.

----
* EleventhHourSuperpower: In ''Episode Ignis'', [[spoiler:he puts on the Ring of the Lucii to fight Ardyn. In the initial ending, it's how he goes blind]].
* ActOfTrueLove: Whatever the nature of that love may be, his decision to [[spoiler:wear the Ring of the Lucii and offer his eyesight and even his entire life in order to protect Noctis]] is motivated by his love for Noctis.
* ADayInTheLimelight: Like Gladio and Prompto before, Ignis has his own DLC scenario in the form of ''Episode Ignis'', however, unlike those two, ''Ignis'' contains a "[[StoryBranching Verse 2]]" option, selecting it will result in a AlternateTimeline, one where Ignis becomes the {{Deuteragonist}} for the main story alongside Noctis.
* AlwaysSaveTheGirl: Noctis's safety and wellbeing is the most important thing in the world to him, to the point that he's willing to allow all of humanity to be sacrificed just to protect Noctis. [[spoiler:Losing his eyesight]] isn't enough to deter him from this. Even his [[GameplayAndStoryIntegration in-game programming]] reflects this, as his AI tends to position himself close to wherever Noctis is.
* AmbiguouslyGay: [[ShipTease Occasional teasing with Aranea aside]], he's the only one of the four party members to never show any overt romantic interest in women, and Prompto's remarks about Ardyn not being Ignis's type suggests that he doesn't think IncompatibleOrientation is the issue here, and likewise Ardyn makes some insulting comments towards him in ''Episode Ignis'' that suggest his intense attachment to Noctis might be more than just duty or platonic friendship.
* ArtificialStupidity: Invoked due to GameplayAndStoryIntegration. After Ignis [[spoiler:is blinded]], his competence in the field drops like a stone -- he can't keep up with the party as they move about, he can't use his Techniques, and he ineffectually flails his weapons at where he ''thinks'' the enemy is, possibly hitting party members in his efforts.
* BadassBookworm: Received a rare classical education and is a capable combatant in the group. Amusingly however he is not one to read for pleasure and scoffs at the idea when Gladio tells him to read a book sometime.
* BadassInANiceSuit: He dresses the most formally of the buddies, complete with HighClassGloves.
* BattleButler: Maybe not his actual profession, but fits the archetype perfectly. He's also the group's driver and chef.
* BeneathTheMask: For much of the game Ignis comes off as the most mature and professional member of the party. When we actually get to see the story from his side, we see that beneath that facade of stoicism lies a very emotional and impulsive youth. This appears to be a conscious decision on his part, as he goes back to his more serious demeanor once he's back at Noctis's side, although it's shown to the player that he's deeply troubled inside.
* BigBrotherInstinct: As Regis asked Ignis to be Noctis’s brother figure from a young age, Ignis takes looking after Noctis very seriously; he’s even deliberately partnered with Ravus in episode Ignis to showcase how similar the two’s protectiveness towards Noctis and Luna are. This instinct is one of his driving characteristics, and he puts it over all else, including [[spoiler: saving the world,]] if necessary.
-->'''Ignis:''' This world means nothing to me. Do with it as you wish. But I refuse to let Noct [[spoiler:sacrifice his life to save ours. I won't let you take him away!]]
* BigBrotherMentor: Essentially how his job position as advisor, tutor, and strategist to Noctis plays out. Actually literally, since he started when he was in grade school and ''Episode Ignis'' reveals that Regis specifically asked him to serve as a brother to Noctis in his youth.
* BlackComedy: Often enjoys making grim jokes at Prompto's expense.
* BlindWeaponmaster: After the TimeSkip, when Noctis [[spoiler:gets out of the Crystal,]] Ignis has become this, having taken to hunting daemons at night without breaking a sweat.
* BlindWithoutThem: [[AvertedTrope Averted]], Ignis eyes are passable, he just prefers to not have any sort of blurriness. [[spoiler:Also averted after Altissia since he's blind whether or not he's wearing them.]]
* BlueBlood: According to a comment from Noctis during gameplay, Ignis is a Count. His uncle served on Regis's royal council.
* BrainsAndBrawn: The Brains to Gladiolus's Brawn. Ignis received a special education for gifted children to work as a staff officer for Noctis and uses shrewd logic. Gladiolus comes from a long line of protectors to the royal family, and is instead trained to use his fighting abilities to serve Noctis. Their names even lampshade this (see their respective {{Meaningful Name}}s).
* BreakTheCutie: [[spoiler:''Episode Ignis'' reveals that Pryna showed him a vision of the future, and that Ignis has known about Noctis's fate all along, being absolutely crushed about it ever since he came to discover it. It however allows him to change the events and the future in the changed timeline, saving Noctis in the process.]]
* CharacterCatchphrase: "Indeed" and "[[MemeticMutation That's it! I've come up with a new recipe!]]"
* ChefOfIron: Is the party's main cook who can cook up meals at camp that give the party buffs and can come up with new recipes on the fly even while in the midst of battle (killing creatures serves as one of his main sources of inspiration) on top of being one of Noctis' closest friends and personal bodyguard since they were kids.
* ChildhoodFriend: Of Noctis, having met him when they were kids and have been close ever since.
* ChildProdigy: As a gifted child, he was given special education to make him the ideal consultant for Noctis.
* ChoiceOfTwoWeapons: Iggy uses dual daggers along with a spear for a sub weapon.
* ClassyCane: Uses one after [[spoiler:he goes blind, though he ditches it in the timeskip.]]
* CombatMedic: Many of Ignis's abilities are to support and heal allies, such as "Regroup," which calls the party to him while rapidly restoring everyone's health, Regenerate allows him to to regularly heal party members and his exclusive accessories the Good and Grand Chamberlain allow him to automatically use items to heal Noctis when his HP drops beyond a certain threshold.
* TheComicallySerious: Quite funny without meaning to be, a highlight of this being when his glasses are stolen by a chocobo.
* TheConfidant: He acts like this for Noctis, who he understands better than anyone.
* TheConsigliere: As Noct's unofficial NumberTwo and advisor.
* CounterAttack: When playable Ignis has a unique counter attack system requiring a bit more precision then Noctis, allowing him to return dodged attacks or heavy blows with a powerful spear attack.
* CulturedBadass: As expected of a noble and consultant to the future King, Ignis is highly intellectual, and much more formal than his companions. He's also very good at attacking enemies with knives and magic.
* CutenessProximity: While every single one of them gushes over the newly hatched black chocobo chick, Ignis utterly ''melts'' at the sight of it.
* DeadpanSnarker: While he's the most serious of the four Ignis isn't without a hefty sense of humor, and absolutely excels with his sarcastic zingers.
-->'''Prompto''': ''(when the party has to cross a steep unsteady ledge)'' Can I just--
-->'''Noctis''': It'll hold you.
-->'''Ignis''': Famous last words.

-->'''Aranea''': Daemons. Till death do us part.
-->'''Ignis''': Practicing your vows?
* DeclarationOfProtection: Of the "protecting a badass" variant. At multiple points in the story Ignis declares his desire to protect Noctis, to the very end. He even gets a theme dedicated to him and Ravus called "The Two Protectors".
* DesignatedParents: Fits the role of TeamMom towards Noctis, being his [[HouseHusband primary caretaker]], whereas Gladio is more of a TeamDad, even telling Ignis to stop coddling Noctis. Since Noctis couldn’t take care of himself when he started living at his own apartment, [[PromotionToParent Ignis took up the role of homemaker, doing the laundry, household cleaning, chauffeuring, grocery shopping, cooking, etc]]. Especially cooking though, where the images are FoodPorn.
* TheDeterminator: Stops at nothing to keep Noctis out of harm's way, even giving up [[spoiler:his vision, and in one continuity, choosing to offer up his own life in exchange for keeping Noctis out of Ardyn's hands]]. He also spends the entirety of [[spoiler:the 10-year timeskip researching the history of Eos in an attempt to save Noctis from his fate. In the Extra Verse, he succeeds.]]
* {{Deuteragonist}}: ''Episode Ignis'' reveals he's this, [[spoiler:as not only did he know about Noctis' ultimate fate, he's given a chance to change the events to come, and manages to do so, resulting in another ending for the whole story.]] ''Royal Edition'' furthers this by portraying him as the central and most devoted of Noctis's three friends, and while the other two have their own dedicated finishers during the boss fights with the Lucii, Ignis's has him set up a two-parter with Noctis.
* DrivenToSuicide: Ultimately averted, but heavily implied (and confirmed by WordOfGod) that [[spoiler:he planned on dying along with Noctis in the throne room, until Noctis cuts him off to dissuade him. In a conversation during the journey through Insomnia Noctis can ask Ignis to see the dawn for him, as if to talk him out of thoughts of suicide.]]
* DualWielding: Ignis's main weapon type are pairs of knives that he can switch to ReverseGrip during combos, as well as hurl at enemies.
* DubPersonalityChange: Ignis has a different personality in the original Japanese script as he is presented as gentle (especially to Noctis), well-mannered even to enemies, humble, and a straightforward young man who rarely jokes around and takes his duties seriously. The English localization went in the opposite direction and did the BritishStuffiness route instead, being a ComicallySerious QuintessentialBritishGentleman and a PungeonMaster who dishes out [[DeadpanSnarker snark]] like it's candy, even to his charge.
* EarnYourHappyEnding: Big time. [[spoiler:After completing his episode a first time, he's given a chance to change the events of the whole game, resulting in a much happier ending, which can be considered as another one for the whole story.]]
* ElementalRockPaperScissors: Libra Elementia targets an enemy with a spell of the element they are weakest against, while Enhancement grants Noctis a buff enhancing his attacks with the element enemies are weakest against. Ignis can also easily take advantage of this when playable with his SpellBlade attacks but falters when enemies resist all elements because he lacks a way to deal NonElemental damage.
* EurekaMoment: ''"That's it! I've come up with a new recipe!"'' You'll be hearing that ''a lot'' as you play through the game.
* EyeScream: During the battle with Leviathan, [[spoiler:he claims he was blinded by Imperial forces and the tsunami. Though ''Episode Ignis'' reveals he was fibbing a bit there, and that he lost his sight by putting on the Ring of the Lucii while trying to protect Noctis.]]
* EyesAlwaysShut: After [[spoiler:being blinded]] in Episode 9, Ignis keeps his eyes shut for the remainder of the game. On the rare occasion he opens them again, they are [[ProphetEyes pure white]].
* FirstNameBasis: In the English dub of ''Episode Duscae'' he only refers to Noctis as "Highness", but in the Japanese version, he actually calls Noctis by his nickname. This seems to have been noticed; in the Master Version footage he does call Noctis "Noct" in the English version.
* FlechetteStorm: He can pull this off thanks to the SummonToHand nature of weapons in the game. His Mark technique even works on the principle of throwing as many knives in as many enemies as he can so Noctis can use them as beacons for his Warp Strike.
* GladIThoughtOfIt: If you buy a cookbook, he will state that he has "come up with a new recipe" like he didn't just read it from said cookbook.
* GrapplingHookPistol: As a playable character, Ignis comes equipped with a SuperWristGadget with a retractable grapnel attached to it to get him around Atissia.
* HandicappedBadass: [[spoiler:He gets blinded after putting on the Ring of the Lucii. At first, this significantly slows Ignis down, to the point that he becomes TheLoad. After ten years of practice, Ignis regains almost all of the skill he had before.]]
* HesBack: The game even lampshades it when he [[spoiler:kills the Malboro while being blind]] saying that you can now use his command technique and no longer [[spoiler:slows the pace due to his blindness. It still takes a while for him to be as useful as before though.]]
* HonorBeforeReason: When a black chocobo steals his glasses, Noctis reminds him he has a spare pair, but Ignis refuses to let his perfectly fine glasses serve as a chocobo's trinket.
* ImprobableHairstyle: Ignis, at first, seems to have the most realistic (that is to say [[AnimeHair non-anime]]) hairstyle of the main party, with a quiff that looks quite attainable with about half a tub of gel, except we see his hair down for the first time in ''Episode Ignis'' and it's short, far too short to be styled into a quiff.
* ImprobableUseOfAWeapon: One of his attack animations is to toss one of his knives in the air and spin-kick it into an enemy.
* InASingleBound: Like Aranea, he has the Dragoon signature (High) Jump in his repertoire when he is a playable character.
* InSeriesNickname: Noctis occasionally calls him "Specs", while the rest of the group tends to call him "Iggy". Sometimes Prompto will also call him "Igster".
* InvulnerableAttack: Parodied with Ignis's Quick Recipeh skill which he will do in mid-battle, stop to prepare himself a meal becoming entirely immune to any attack while he is cooking.
* KatanasAreJustBetter: In earlier builds for ''Versus XIII'' his main weapon was a katana, representative of his sense of duty toward Noctis. Retained in the final game's Armiger Chain, where he wields the Katana of the Warrior.
* KnightTemplarBigBrother: Regis told him to serve as a brother to Noctis, and he's willing to trade [[spoiler:the future of the entire world for his continued safety]], something which Noctis chafes against at times.
* LargeHam: Can veer into this territory with his almost Shakespearean manner of speaking, especially when [[CharacterCatchphrase he comes up with a new recipe]].
* LifeDrain: Ignis can drain the life of enemies with the Lancet ability.
* LivingEmotionalCrutch: It's implied Noctis is this to Ignis, given the lengths to which he is willing to sacrifice everything for him.
* TheLoad: Becomes this for a while after [[spoiler: he's blinded in Altissia]]. In one mission, you have to stay near to him or face a game over screen and when being attacked by mobs he's pretty much a sitting duck and can only use one technique. He gets over it after the time skip.
* MagicKnight: Ignis is the party member most focused on spellcasting besides Noctis himself, having higher magic power and several attacks that make use of magic flasks to support allies or attack enemies. As a playable character his ability to use magic is greatly expanded even compared to Noctis himself with his SpellBlade mechanic and his Total Clarity spells.
* TheMedic: Ignis can heal allies with the Regenerate and Regroup abilities and his Good and Grand Chamberlain accessories let him automatically heal Noct with potions when his HP drops below a certain threshold.
* MeaningfulEcho: ''Episode Ignis'' reveals the above quote to be this in-universe, as it was what Regis had said when he first introduced Ignis to Noctis.
* MeaningfulName: "Ignis" means fire, which is the element of his ultimate attack, and "scientia" means knowledge, befitting his status as TheSmartGuy. And as we find out in ''Episode Ignis'', he can actually be quite the HotBlooded young man.
* TheMourningAfter: While the person in question wasn't dead yet, [[spoiler:comments made about Ignis over the course of the ten years of darkness indicate that Ignis took Noctis's disappearance particularly hard compared to Gladio and Prompto, and while the other two tried to move on with their lives, he would do things like take up Noctis's favorite hobby of fishing and station himself close to where Noctis would eventually emerge. In hindsight, it may have to do with the fact that he knew exactly what caused Noctis's disappearance, thanks to Pryna's vision]].
* NiceGuy: He's unfailingly polite and courteous to everyone even when clearly upset, is shown to be an idealized gentleman and is a very patient, kind, gentle and loyal friend to those he cares about.
* NoodleIncident: According to Noctis at a certain point in ''Episode Duscae 2.0'', he once ran over Gladio's foot with the Regalia.
* NotSoAboveItAll: He makes horrible puns like the others, will declare "That's it!" after defeating monsters since he figured out a new recipe and when the Regalia is stolen, he refuses a courtesy car since it wouldn't be a match to the Regalia.
** He completely ''melts'' at the sight of the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufUh9VIYKI8 black chocobo chick]].
** And nope, not even he can maintain his stoicism and composure when the gang gets a "portrait" of them drawn in Altissia.
** He's also not above a bit of self-mockery:
-->'''Gladio:''' Well Iggy? Don't you got something to say?
-->'''Ignis:''' I hate to disappoint, but I already had a [[AscendedMeme recipe]]''[[AscendedMeme h]]'' in mind: there's no tuna dish superior to sushi.
* NotSoStoic: He's one of the most vocal to freak out if an enemy pins or bashes Noctis around, and as the story wears down on the party [[spoiler: and Ignis himself is blinded]], it definitely pressures him the most. ''Episode Ignis'' also rather violently deconstructs and breaks apart his standard stoicism as he spends the course of the story trying to assure Noctis is safe, borderline diving into a HotBlooded and brash equivalent of anxiety. Enough so that [[HiddenDepths Gladio]] has to try to calm him down.
* OnlyAFleshWound: [[spoiler:He brushes off the injury leading to his blindness as this. It quickly becomes apparent that it's anything but a flesh wound when he's revealed to be permanently blind.]]
* OnlySaneMan: Tries to keep Noctis and the lads out of trouble, with varying degrees of success.
* OverzealousUnderling: Extremely devoted to Noctis, yet can be very ruthless and singleminded in his moral outlook compared to the more [[MessianicArchetype all-loving]] Noctis, although he never does anything particularly cruel onscreen out of respect for [[MoralityChain Noctis's]] wishes.
** An early draft for his ''Brotherhood'' CharacterFocus episode also indicates that he's willing to engage in brutal violence to protect Noctis, only holding back to [[WhatTheHellHero avoid scaring him]] while he's present.
** In ''Episode Ignis'' he openly admits that he is perfectly willing to [[spoiler:abandon the rest of the world to ruination if it means keeping Noctis alive, and in the "canon" storyline, attempts to dissuade Noctis from fulfilling the prophecy that will save the world, only conceding reluctantly when Noctis presses the situation]].
* PowerAtAPrice: [[spoiler:In ''Episode Ignis'', Ignis puts on the Ring of the Lucii to save Noct from Ardyn and fight him off, but since the ring can only be worn by the royal bloodline, Ignis pays the price by losing his eyesight.]]
* PromotedToPlayable: In the DLC ''Episode Ignis''. Carried over to the main game as of the December 2017 update.
* PungeonMaster: Betraying his stoic demeanor, he'll gladly slip a pun or two into his snarky dialogue whenever the opportunity arises. For example, before his OptionalBoss fight against Noctis, he starts spouting off multiple puns related to his passion for cooking while trying to get Noctis to eat his vegetables.
-->'''Ignis:''' I may not be Gladio, but underestimating me is a ''recipe'' for failure.\
'''Noctis:''' [[LampshadeHanging Ugh… you're gonna make a meal out of this.]]\
'''Ignis:''' ''[if he wins]'' That satisfied my appetite for knowledge. Yet alas, our king suffers the bitter taste of defeat. Nothing a healthy helping of greens couldn't fix, of course.\
'''Noctis:''' ''[groaning]''
* QuintessentialBritishGentleman: In the English dub. Technically Ignis is a Lucian rather than a Brit, but he has the accent, is very sophisticated and well-mannered, and his outfit looks somewhat formal, to reflect his aristocratic upbringing.
* RealMenCook: Despite not being in his job description, Ignis apparently enjoys cooking and assumes the role as the party's cook whenever they make camp (and tracked by level). As long as you provide him with ingredients bought from shops or gathered from the area, he can make some fabulous dishes. But if you run out of ingredients, be prepared to eat flame-roasted toast, basic onigiri or cheese pizza.
* TheReasonYouSuckSpeech: [[spoiler: He gives a subdued one to both Noctis and Gladio when the huge rift amongst themselves created by Luna's death and his own blindness starts getting on his nerves. He tells Noctis that as king, he must be prepared to move forward and accept any consequences that may occur, and he indirectly calls Gladio out on his excessively cruel and insensitive treatment of Noctis, telling him that Noctis ''will'' take his rightful place, but only once he is ready. Heartwarmingly, his words do go through, and the rift is patched up.]]
* TheRedMage: The party member with the most mastery of magic after Noctis, though not nearly to the same degree.
* TheReliableOne: Almost any time Noctis takes a hit or is overwhelmed by the enemy, Ignis will rush over to guard him. If your HP is low, he'll also cure you as long as he's nearby. Battles aside, he seems like the one Noctis relies on for just about everything else as well.
* RideTheLightning: With his stormbound daggers activated, Ignis is able to quickly zip around the battlefield as a flash of lightning.
* SatelliteCharacter: PlayedForDrama, Iggy struggles to find a purpose beyond being Noct's NumberTwo.
* ScarsAreForever: He gains a prominent scar on the left side of his face after the fight with Leviathan ([[spoiler:actually gained after putting on the Ring]]), [[spoiler:and still has it after the timeskip.]]
* {{Seers}}: In ''Episode Ignis'', [[spoiler:a dying Pryna shows Ignis a vision of the future, specifically, a vision of Noctis' death. Following that, Ignis tries his damnedest to stop that from happening.]]
* SenselessSacrifice: In ''Episode Ignis'', which takes place shortly after Chapter 9, Ardyn is hovering above a downed Noctis and a dead Lunafreya. In desperation, Ignis decides to [[spoiler:put on the Ring of Lucii at the expense of his eyesight]] to stop him. The tragic thing is that Ignis couldn't have known that [[spoiler:Ardyn was just {{Troll}}ing him; he had no intention of actually killing Noctis at that point, not until he'd taken in the power of the Crystal.]]
* SesquipedalianLoquaciousness: He really wants you to replenish your supply of curatives.
* SharpDressedMan: The only one of Noctis's gang who wears a suit.
* SliceAndDiceSwordsmanship: More often then not Ignis will slash people with his polearm rather then thrusting it, this of course is justified, all the polearm weapons in the game have a long head or otherwise a halberd like blade to facilitate both stabbing and slashing attacks.
* TheSmartGuy: He was gifted enough to receive special education growing up, and Noctis apparently relies on him for strategies.
* SmartPeopleSpeakTheQueensEnglish: Has a British accent in the English dub, and is the designated tactician of the party.
* {{Spellblade}}:
** Comes with the [[PoisonedWeapons Venom Fang]] ability as well as a [[FlamingSword Sagefire]] attack and can give Noctis a buff with the Enhancement technique that gives his attacks the element of the current target's weakness.
** As a playable character, he's a [[Franchise/FinalFantasy Spell Fencer]] in all but name and is the main focus of his fighting style, with the ability to switch between FireIceLightning to change the properties of his attacks. Fire for single target damage, Ice for [=AoE=] damage and Lightning for speedy attacks.
* TheStoic: Tends to speak in a more serious and aloof tone, especially in the Japanese dub. Subverted in ''Episode Ignis'', where we find out he can actually be quite expressive.
* StoicSpectacles: He's a tall, thin, handsome, and aloof intellectual.
* SuperSenses: A downplayed example. The updated version of Chapter 13 reveals that, [[spoiler: he and Gladio are able to reunite with Noctis at Zegnautus Keep because of his sharpened sense of hearing, being able to hear Noctis through the walls and following the direction of his voice]].
* SupportPartyMember: Ignis's special abilities are geared for supporting the party with healing and buffs.
* TheStrategist: He's the one crafting the plans for the group as proven in the Duscae Demo. Gameplay-wise, his moveset is to either use an elemental weakness on the enemy or tell the group where to strike and where to regroup. One of the nicknames the party frequently calls him in the JP version is "Tactician/Military Advisor" (something the English translation ignores most of the time).
* TallDarkAndHandsome: While not as towering as Gladiolus, Ignis is still tall at 183cm (6'), handsome and sophisticated.
* TeamMom: As kids, how many of you picked food you didn’t like off your plate and put it on your mother’s? Noctis does this with Ignis ''as grown men in their early twenties''. He may play caretaker to everyone in the group, but the extent he takes it to with Noctis is astonishing -- he was made responsible for Noctis when they were barely out of diapers, and he’s been willingly acting as Noctis’s personal chef, maid, chauffeur, and ''de facto'' parent for at least five years before the events of the game, attending to everything from torn shirts to recreating a Tenebraen pastry Noct tried when he was eight.
-->'''Noctis''': What are you, my mother or something?
-->'''Ignis''': Mum's the word.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Being the team cook and a man of taste, he has the more developed palate for food, especially for off kilter culinary acquired tastes. Some of his favorites come to also reflect his adept aptitude for cooking, including being able to bake cakes while they rough it on the road. For the most part however, he is not restricted to the high class, loving even street food and fast food. Ignis is also really fond of Ebony [[MustHaveCaffeine Coffee.]]
-->'''Noctis:''' I might have asked before, but is Ebony really all that good?\
'''Ignis:''' I might have answered before, but yes, it is.
* UndyingLoyalty: Dedicated his entire being to protecting and serving Noctis since childhood, and is willing to sacrifice everything to make sure Noctis is safe.
-->'''Ignis''': I swore an oath to stand with Noct and keep him safe. Whatever it takes, I ''will'' protect him!
* UnkemptBeauty: In the alternative ending of ''Episode Ignis'', he loses his glasses and his bangs fall and gets messed up, [[https://imgur.com/a/UgG4y and is still pretty looking, if not arguably more.]]
* WeakButSkilled: He's not as physically strong as Gladio, nor does he have Noct's royal arms, but he still ends up successful through pure skill, and good use of magic. In the obligatory post-completion OptionalBoss for ''Episode Ignis'', [[spoiler:he fights a duel against Noctis of all people, and, not only does he win despite Noct having multiple Royal Arms, and the Ring of the Lucii, there's an achievement for getting a high rank doing so]].
* YoungerThanTheyLook: A lot of players were under the impression he was a lot older than the group due to his mature demeanor, but he's actually only 22. This is partially due to the dub; in the Japanese version, Ignis sounds like your average well-mannered adult male, while in the English version, he sounds like a far older QuintessentialBritishGentleman.
** In ''Episode Ignis'', we see him without his glasses and his hair down for the first time and he shockingly looks quite young.

Noctis's bodyguard and combat instructor. His family have served the Kings of Lucis for generations.

----
* EleventhHourSuperpower: The final blessing he gains before he fights Gilgamesh is the power to harm Gilgamesh.
* EightiesHair: Wears his hair in a long mullet.
* AmazonChaser: Implied. See EatingTheEyeCandy below. Also, if players exploit a glitch that allows them to keep Aranea in their party, they might get a photo with some commentary implying Gladio is attracted to her (and his bros of course giving him a hard time over it).
* TheBerserker: In ''Episode Gladiolus'', he has a special Rage meter that acts as a damage multiplier based on the damage he takes.
* {{BFS}}: His weapon is a greatsword. And while most greatswords in the FF-verse are large, his appears to be longer than he is tall (and he's a ''big'' dude) as well as being nearly as wide as a human being. And then there's when he can help grab the ones wielded by Iron Giants.
* BigBrotherInstinct: He asks Noctis to bring Iris with them since she might be in danger, refuses anyone but Ignis to drive while she is there because he doesn't trust anyone else's driving and drops Iris when they go busting an imperial base. He also has some shade of this with Noctis saying that when the prince isn't thinking straight he has to think for both. He also has this towards Noctis, with [[WordOfGod the developers]] stating that his relationship with Noctis was written to be like that of a big brother to his little brother.
** In a lovely bit of GameplayAndStoryIntegration, should you bring Iris into combat with you, he'll sometimes hang back and take up a protective stance in front of her instead of rushing right into the fray.
* BigBrotherMentor: He provides the combat tutorial in both ''Episode Duscae'' and ''XV'', and is in fact the one who taught Noctis how to fight in the first place. He's also an ''actual'' big brother, having a younger sister named Iris, as Episode 3 of ''Brotherhood'' shows.
* TheBigGuy: Noticeably older and more muscular than the others, as well as the most experienced combatant.
* BlueBlood: He's the eldest son of the noble House of Amicitia.
* BrutalHonesty: Takes this stance with Noctis, considering it part of his duties to keep Noctis's head on straight via ToughLove. First demonstrated when Noctis is starting to waver while facing a berserk Titan, when he forces Noctis to look beyond his own hangups and focus on his duties and responsibilities instead. [[spoiler: It ends up later causing a rift that nearly costs them their friendship after the events in Altissia; though Noctis is [[{{Mangst}} dealing with Luna's death]] in the best way he can, Gladio interprets it as {{Wangst}} and repeatedly calls him out on it, even going so far as to call him a coward and blame him for Luna's death, along with calling him out for being too focused on mourning Luna to acknowledge Ignis's life-changing injury made for his sake. It takes Ignis getting over his handicap and taking his first steps to HandicappedBadass status and speaking up to both of them for them to start to patch things up.]]
* CharacterCatchphrase: Could double as a BadassBoast. "Stop bitching, start killing."
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Those bulging muscles aren't just for show. On top of him wielding that giant BFS that would make Cloud Strife nod in respect, in ''Episode Gladiolus'', he can wield giant stone pillars the size of tree trunks as makeshift weapons.
* ChickMagnet: While not seen directly, he's strongly implied by the rest of the group to be the most successful at chatting up the ladies. After the TimeSkip, he's apparently in a fairly serious relationship with an unnamed (and unseen) woman.
* CowardiceCallout: He calls Noctis a coward when telling the latter off for doing nothing but mope in self-pity after [[spoiler:Lunafreya gave her life]] so he could do his duty -- it's at this point that Noctis fully loses his temper.
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: Managed to do it twice; first one is the Gilgamesh and Cor Leonis who is considered to be one strongest people in Lucian.
* DifficultButAwesome: Gladio requires a bit more skill to use effectively then other characters because his damage booster only gets large boosts when precision guarding. But when you have mastered the ability to precision guard, he can practically become invincible while dealing the damage cap with every swing of his sword.
* DisappearedDad: His father was killed during Niflheim's invasion of Lucis.
* DualWielding: Normally dual swords isn't Gladio's forte, but his most powerful Glaive Art Dual Master has him summon his Genji Blade to wield in tandem with his greatsword for a powerful BladeSpam combo.
* EatingTheEyeCandy: He comments on the physical fitness of the women of Lestallum with a very approving tone (at least in the English dub).
* FastballSpecial: Performs this with Noctis in Episode 5 of ''Brotherhood'' and can do it in gameplay for both Noctis and Iris.
* FemaleGaze: His "Rugged Attire" outfit has him entirely shirtless (save for an armband and a pendant) and given that the game has a camera feature…
* GeniusBruiser: Despite his appearance, he's anything but dumb, and is in fact one of the smarter members of the group. While Ignis is TheSmartGuy, Gladio is no slouch in this department either, giving tactical advice just as much as Ignis does even though Ignis' combat role is as strategist, guides the party even beyond that when they're doing things such as camping or giving Noctis advice on fishing, has a lot of knowledge of flora and fauna befitting his role as The Survivalist, and is shown to be an avid bookreader, taking out a book to read almost every time the group gets in the car. He even tries to tell Ignis to read a book, who astonishingly refuses. He also recognizes Sania and chats her up immediately, dragging the group into a biology expedition to catch frogs, and then scoffs at Ignis taking until the end of the quest to realize they were questing for a world class biologist despite knowing her name. After all, being raised and trained to protect the next king means you must be educated as well, and he even tells Noctis that it's his job to think for both of them; a job he does well.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has a hero-style scar over his eye. He also has a second one on his forehead and a large one across his chest when he rejoins the party after their mythril hunt, [[spoiler:that were given to him by Gilgamesh]].
* GoThroughMe: When Ravus accosts Noctis, Gladio quickly puts himself between them in an attempt to defend Noctis, but gets ragdolled by Ravus with a single punch.
* GroundPunch: Gladio's Cyclone attack works on this principle using a Shield as a PowerFist to do it.
* HeroicBuild: He's the {{BFS}} wielder, and has the type of build needed for it.
* HiddenDepths: He can often be seen reading novels while camping or riding in the Regalia.
* {{Hunk}}: The most masculinely handsome and [[HeroicBuild well built]] [[TheBigGuy member of the group.]]
* {{Hypocrite}}: He calls Noctis out for not stepping up and fulfilling his duty as king over personal grief, while conveniently forgetting that he himself left the party for a while after he got [[TheWorfEffect Worfed]] by Ravus. Slightly [[DownplayedTrope downplayed]] in that making sure the King doesn't fall into funks, alongside keeping him safe and focusing for him when he can't, is part of his ''job''.
* InSeriesNickname: He's "Gladio" to his friends. His sister Iris calls him "Gladdy".
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: While he has a very gruff demeanor and tends to get in Noctis' face on more than one occasion over the course of the game, particularly after the events of Chapter 9, it's clear that he's a man of honor and that he really cares deeply about his friends. He just takes his duties very seriously, and wants to make sure that Noctis does the same.
* LackOfEmpathy: Gladio's behavior in Chapter 10 could be interpreted as such, given his misinterpretation of how Noctis is [[{{Mangst}} reeling from the collateral damage of Leviathan's trial]] and harsh practicality towards the bigger picture, prioritizing the need to press on to complete their mission over actually allowing the other three time to grieve and recover from the turmoil first. While it's not hard to understand his position, as he too is grieving in his own way, it's undeniable that he comes off as a bit insensitive to Noctis and, to some extent, [[spoiler:Ignis]].
* LamePunReaction: Despite everyone throwing puns around, Prompto's pun about Andamantoise "moving" mountain was just that bad and he should feel bad.
* TheLancer: His bullheaded sense of duty and focus on the big picture clashes with Noctis, who's still in his fledgling stage as a leader and king. Regardless, Gladiolus always has the latter's back and the two make a formidable duo.
* LegacyOfService: His family has served as protectors of Lucis's royalty for generations.
* LittleGuyBigBuddy: The Big Buddy to Noct's Little Guy. [[http://www.siliconera.com/2016/06/01/final-fantasy-xvs-character-profiles-tell-us-noctis-bros/ Gladiolus is 198cm (just under 6'6) and very brawny]] while Noctis is 176cm (just over 5'9) with a slender physique.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: Gladio can use shields as a sub weapon, and when he does he just takes to using his {{BFS}} [[OneHandedZweihander like an arming sword]] with it.
* ManlyMan: With the other three being fashionable pretty boys, you can smell Gladiolus' testosterone from a mile away. He's big, tall and brawny, and most outfits flaunt his impressive physique. He has high strength and health, wields the biggest weapons and is the most experienced fighter of the group. He's an avid and rugged outdoorsman who never turns down a challenge or runs from a fight. He's no mere meathead, however, as he encapsulates many nobler masculine attributes as well. He is fearless in the face of adversity, unwaveringly diligent in his duties and stoic in hardship and strife.
* MeaningfulName: His first name is a pun on a type of sword, and his last name means "friendship". "Gladiolus" is also [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gladiolus a type of flower]] known as the sword lily.
* MightyGlacier: Because he has the party's highest HP, Strength and Vitality, as well as access to Shields, he'll likely be the last to go down. As a playable character he also attacks the slowest but rewards weathering attacks with his shield, empowering his attacks every time you do so.
** He gets called out on this fighting style by Gilgamesh, who initially sees him as an unrefined brute unworthy of being the Shield of the Chosen King. Gladio changes his mind with a display of, uh, [[IResembleThatRemark brute force]].
* MrFanservice: The man is a {{Hunk}} with a constant (literally if you have the Rugged Attire) WalkingShirtlessScene. It's bound to happen.
* MountainMan: He's quite an outdoorsman and a survivalist (it's his particular skill), being the one who assembles the tent and directs the party when they make camp.
* MyGreatestFailure: While protecting Noctis, being so easily pushed back by one blow from Ravus makes Gladio question if he can be the shield of the king, which convinces him to leave the group for a while to search for a way to get stronger, kick-starting ''Episode Gladiolus''.
* MySisterIsOffLimits: Defied, actually. One of the optional tours you can trigger for him has him basically trick Noctis into getting a bouquet of flowers from a volcanic region for Iris, and Gladio then asks Noct to give it to her instead of him; when Noct doesn't get why it matters which of them gives it to her, Gladio [[ObliviousToLove comments about how clueless Noct is sometimes]]. When picking your photograph at the end of the game, if you choose one of Iris, his comment is that he'll have to turn a blind eye.
* NoodleIncident: According to Noctis's comeback during Gladio's second Tour in ''Episode Duscae 2.0'', Ignis once ran over his foot with the Regalia.
* PracticalTaunt: Gladio has a taunt ability allowing him to take the focus off of Noctis and onto himself.
* PromotedToPlayable: In the DLC ''Episode Gladiolus'', as well as Chapter 13 Verse 2. Carried over to the rest of the main game as of the December 2017 update.
* PutOnABus: At the beginning of Chapter 7 he leaves the group to partake in the business that takes place in the ''Episode Gladiolus'' DLC. When he comes back, he has another scar.
* QuitYourWhining: His catchphrase is "stop bitching, start killing".
* ShieldBash: Gladio can use his shield as a PowerFist for many of his attacks, especially right after counter attacking.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Manly man to Prompto's sensitive guy. Gladio is rough, aggressive, physically strong, very outdoorsy, [[RealMenDontCry has enormous amounts of mental and emotional fortitude being able to cope with and adapt to difficult and stressful situations no matter the adversity]], he loves general physical activity and is very athletic, he's also a very large, muscular man towering over nearly everyone in the game. In-game, Gladio's dialogue can be abrasive at times, mocking Prompto if he hears him complaining by calling him a wuss.
** [[spoiler: All of this of course makes it absolutely heartwrenching when he sheds a virtual torrent of [[ManlyTears manly tears]] during the final "campfire" scene. ]]
* SeriousBusiness: The man takes his [[ProductPlacement Cup Noodles]] ''very'' seriously. Even going so far as initiating his own Quest to have the group ''climb a freaking volcano'' to steal a ''giant egg from a '''very''' giant bird'' just to flavor his noodles. Other possibilities include killing a giant prawn for shrimp, as well as killing a freaking '''[=BEHEMOTH=]''' for some good meat.
* SomethingWeForgot: King Regis explicitly requested that Prompto, Ignis and Gladio not to try and guide his wayward son, instead simply to remain by his side through whatever hardship and to lend him support when he needed it. Gladio spends a good amount of time in the story harshly lecturing Noctis on his attitude and actions, the most notable scene being the one in the train where he pushes Prompto out of the way and tells Noctis to get over [[spoiler:Luna's death]], despite their not being much else to do on it. The main reason he seems angry is that he believes Noctis wallowing in self-misery is an insult to the sacrifices of [[spoiler:Ignis]] and [[spoiler:Luna]]. He does seem to mellow out somewhat after Ignis tells him that Noctis will take his rightful place, but only once he's ready.
* SpinAttack: The Tempest technique is great for attacking clustered groups of enemies.
* SprintMeter: A unique perk of Gladio's is that he ''lacks'' this. As a result, Gladio is the only character who naturally has infinite sprint.
* SuperiorSuccessor: Cor points out that Gladio's father, Clarus Amicitia, as well as Cor himself, never completed the Trials of Gilgamesh. As of the end of ''Episode Gladiolus'', however, Gladio himself completed them. Doubly so if you beat the Final Trial you gain after beating it, since Gladio ends up defeating the legendary Cor the Immortal in a one-on-one duel.
* SwordAndFist: When playable, a few of his animations are just ignoring his sword entirely in favor of a good old left-hand punch.
* SwordBeam: Gladio's Impulse technique launches a very wide horizontal sword beam which deals massive damage to enemies in front of him.
* SwordPlant: Gladio's Earthshatter Glaive Art has him stab his sword into the ground for an [=AoE=] shockwave attack.
* TallDarkAndHandsome: The tallest member of the team, and very good looking with dark hair and a tan complexion from being very physically active.
* TeamDad: Among the quartet, Gladio's the oldest. Personality wise, he's also the one who's always calm and disciplinarian, especially to Noctis. He's even a DrillSergeantNasty for Noctis' combat training. Additionally, he has a military background and is the most protective among the team.
* ThrowingYourSwordAlwaysWorks: Gladio can hurl his greatsword at enemies for a ranged attack, when playing him this is his only long-ranged attack.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: As reflected of his outdoorsman nature, loves bare-bones game roasted with nothing but an open fire and seasoned with wild gathered herbs and spices. Also enjoys preservable goodies, especially Uncle Randall's Root Beer and Cup Noodles.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: Why would you button up your shirt when you're so utterly ripped? His shirt can even be blown upwards by wind or his movements, completely revealing his upper body.
** ''Episode Gladiolus'' takes this a stage further with the unlockable "[[http://i.imgur.com/ZEJEHg5.jpg Rugged Attire]]" outfit, in which Gladio removes his shirt altogether to leave his upper body entirely bare.
* WarmUpBoss: You spend the combat tutorial hacking him up.
* WrestlerInAllOfUs: In Episode Gladiolus, many of his unique context-sensitive animations involve wrestling moves.

Noctis's best (and only) friend from high school, who was given honorary membership to the Crownsguard to serve as part of Noctis's wedding entourage.

----
* EleventhHourSuperpower: In ''Episode Prompto'', [[spoiler:the snowmobile gains a minigun turret, one that he uses to take down Verstael post-OneWingedAngel]].
* ActionSurvivor: Before the events of the game, Prompto had never been in a fight at all, only receiving a crash course in self-defense training from the Crownsguard a few days prior to Noctis's bachelor party.
* AmbiguouslyBi: ''Loves'' girls and is very much interested in Cindy and Aranea, but occasionally shows appreciation for the male physique, as seen by some of his comments on Gladio's [[{{Hunk}} attractiveness]] and one of his StockPhrases when viewing photos of him is "Why you gotta be so photogenic?".
* ArtificialStupidity: Of all of the party members, Prompto usually needs the most attention because his tendency to run into the midst of battle as the team's ''firearms specialist'' has him getting kicked around a lot. It doesn't help that he starts with the lowest HP in the party too.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: He’s the least mature of the group with youthful freckles to boot, and is visibly the smallest out of them, being a very skinny 5'8"(173cm).
* {{BFG}}: Some of the Machine type weapons function this way, producing gigantic energy blasts from short range or by.
* BottomlessMagazines: Prompto's pistol will never run out of ammo but his other weapons all have limited shots and must be recharged once exhausted. Having the Sigil of the Clever equipped will make it so Prompto's [[MoreDakka machine gun will never run out of ammunition]]
* ButtMonkey: He's always the target of most jokes in the game. Gameplay-wise, his lack of experience in combat shows, with him almost stumbling in every move.
* CameraFiend: Prompto will snaps pictures of just about anything, at ''any'' moment, and it's his unique skill. It's even a usable skill in ''Episode Prompto'' called the "Selfie Shot''.
* CasanovaWannabe: Hopelessly in love with [[MsFanservice Cindy]] and [[ActionGirl Aranea]]. While the entire group acknowledge that Aranea is most likely beyond ''any'' of them (and much older), they all love to endlessly tease him over his blatant hitting on Cindy. [[ObliviousToLove She doesn't even notice]].
* ChainsawGood: As he can wield machinery weapons as his secondary arms, one of the weapons he can use is a chainsaw-buzzsaw-abomination! It's ''hilarious'' in that he just wildly flails around with it, having clearly ''no idea'' how to use anything except guns.
* CharlesAtlasSuperpower: Downplayed. Didn't receive nearly as much combat training as Ignis and Gladiolus, but whatever he did since he started working out to lose weight was enough to let him beat up enemies barehanded and break their necks. [[spoiler: This makes a lot more sense when you learn about his origins.]]
* CloneAngst: [[spoiler: Doesn't take finding out he's a clone of Verstael, and a DesignerBaby to be part of Niflheim's magitek army on top of that, well.]]
* ContrastingSequelProtagonist: Both his design, and the truth about his origins call to mind ''VideoGame/FinalFantasyVII's'' Cloud Strife. Unlike Cloud, however, Prompto is cheery and outgoing, and remains a well-adjusted individual despite his learning of his origins.
* CowardlyLion: He's often the first one to note if the party is in over their heads, and can show some signs of claustrophobia when moving through small spaces in a cave, but Prompto sticks with his friends through thick and thin.
* CrucifiedHeroShot: [[spoiler:When he is held captive at Zegnautus Keep.]]
* CutenessProximity: He adores chocobos and absolutely melts if you stop to hang out with them for a while at Wiz's ranch.
* DamageIncreasingDebuff: Prompto's Piercer technique has a good chance of reducing enemy defense on hit making attacking much easier.
* DarkSecret: He's from [[spoiler:Niflheim]]. In fact, according to the ''[[AllThereInTheManual Complete Guide]]'' and the DLC ''Episode Prompto'', he's the biological son of [[spoiler:Verstael Besithia, Niflheim's head researcher. Specifically, he was cloned from Verstael, who bred him in a laboratory specifically to be converted into a daemon and processed into an Magitek Trooper.]] He was spirited away by Lucians, though at a very young age as he had no memories of this until after [[spoiler:Ardyn captured him.]]
* DesignerBaby: He was actually [[spoiler:meant to be a Magitek Trooper, created in a lab complete with a [[ScannableMan barcode]].]]
* DistressedDude: Twice.
** He gets dragged away from the group by the Naga searching for her baby. He rejoins them quickly after though.
** Shortly after Chapter 11, [[spoiler:after Noctis throws him off the train, he gets captured by Ardyn. Then Chapter 13 is centered mostly on rescuing him.]]
* DoggedNiceGuy: During the [[spoiler:ten years that Noctis is sealed]], Prompto spent a lot of time trying to woo Cindy, who remained MarriedToTheJob [[MaybeEverAfter or so Talcott believes]].
* DramaQueen: He can be quite dramatic at times.
-->"I've already pushed myself…to the brink of death."
* EliteMook: [[spoiler:He was actually a test tube baby who was going to become one of the nameless mooks in Nilfgard's Magitek Army. Sufficed to say, he's several steps above the average mook on the power scale]].
* EmbarrassingTattoo: [[spoiler:The bar code on his wrist is mostly hidden by arm bands as it gives away his origins.]]
* EmergencyWeapon: When playable, one of Prompto's weapons is a combat knife called the Audax Blade which he can use for CQC, but it is more of a last resort since he specializes in ranged combat.
* TheEngineer: Prompto's subweapons are of the Machine type Imperial {{Magitek}} weapons found in various Niflheim bases, which give him surprising versatility from the AutomaticCrossbow, [[ChainsawGood Circular Saw]], [[DeadlyGas Bio Blaster]], [[GaleForceSound Noiseblaster]], [[GravityMaster Gravity Well]], [[ThisIsADrill Drill Breaker]] and [[FireBreathingWeapon Flamebreath Cannon]].
* EvenTheGuysWantHim: ''Assassin's Festival'' has two men gushing over him.
--> '''Man A''': Hey. Did you see that stylish blonde walking around town?
--> '''Man B''': Did I? He's cute and has a nice camera!
--> '''Man A''': I know—-I'm so jealous. I wanted to ask where he got it, but just can't work up the nerve to talk to him.
* {{Fanboy}}: Of the ''Franchise/AssassinsCreed'' series, as he and Noctis were ''really'' enthusiastic about the Assassin's Festival.
* FormerlyFat: He was overweight when Noctis first met him.
* GenkiGuy: Loud, energetic, and easily the most childish member of the gang.
* GlassCannon: Prompto's abilities have a high critical hit rate and he can dish out a lot of numbers quickly, especially when you are controlling him but due to his low defense and HP, he needs to be healed more often than the others and unlike the other party members lacks a consistent method of avoiding damage.
* FriendlessBackground: [[spoiler:Prior to meeting Noctis in high school, he had no friends at school, and often spends his free time taking photos and looking at his camera.]]
* GravitySucks: Both the Gravity Well machine and the Gravity Ball technique draw enemies to a single point setting them up for AreaOfEffect attacks.
* TheGunslinger: He's the main gun-user of the party. He can use in them quick-draw manner or for precision shots, or surprising rapid fire and his Deathblow has him fan the hammer of his revolver for a rapid barrage of attacks.
* GunsAkimbo: Although he normally only uses a single pistol at a time, Prompto can pull out a second and go full ham on enemies with the Trigger Happy technique.
* GuysSmashGirlsShoot: Gender flipped. Prompto supports Aranea as she does most of the heavy work in his DLC, striking enemies up close with her Stoss Spear, while most of his attacks are ranged.
* HappilyAdopted: That is, "happy" compared to the alternative prospect of [[spoiler:being turned into a Daemon and stuffed into a metal body.]]
* TheHeart: Prompto is the one who lifts the mood of the team, usually with nothing but his own enthusiasm, and is also the one who tries to keep the team spirit up and together to the best of his abilities after [[spoiler:the tragedies that unfolded in Altissia]].
* HeroicBSOD: Spends most of the first half of ''Episode Prompto'' in one after [[spoiler:learning how he is a clone of Verstael and was supposed to be an MT. He gets out of it with the help of Aranea.]]
* HiddenDepths: He feels worthless and doesn't feel like he contributes to the team. He's also [[spoiler: a DesignerBaby who would have been made into a Magitek Trooper if he hadn't been rescued to Lucis early on,]] a reveal that he takes pretty badly on top of his existing self-esteem issues.
* HopelessSuitor: Is ''painfully'' in love with [[MsFanservice Cindy]] and [[ActionGirl Aranea]], and hits on them every chance he gets. Cindy doesn't even ''[[ObliviousToLove register]]'' anything he says as flirting, and Aranea just doesn't care.
* ImpossiblyCoolClothes: Including a leather WaistcoatOfStyle and fingerless gloves.
* InSeriesNickname: Subverted. Noctis calls him blondie at times, but he has trouble answering to it. Aranea, meanwhile, often calls him "shortcake".
* InnocentBlueEyes: Most noticeable in ''Episode Prompto.'' Prompto has piercing baby blues and he's the most pure-hearted of the group.
* TheKlutz: Prompto often trips over himself while fighting due to his inexperience. It's one thing that even his exercise couldn't cure.
* LeaningOnTheFourthWall: One of his voice clips has him singing the ''Final Fantasy'' victory jingle. On the English version, he also sings at one point the Chocobo theme. He also makes frequent references to video games, such as magical keys that open all doors, or how he's "just trying to level up here".
* LeeroyJenkins: Prompto's AI is actually no different from the rest of the party's so he'll rush into the middle of the fray just as the rest do, but since he is the party's firearms guy, his decision to do so often lands him in a predicament that the others are better equipped to handle.
* {{Leitmotif}}: Was given one in ''Episode Prompto'', [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CXfHooTIReM ''Home Sweet Home'']].
* TheLoad: He admits to Noct he often feels this way. He outright says he knows he lacks the talents of his friends and often feels inferior to them.
* LukeIAmYourFather: In the ''[[AllThereInTheManual Complete Guide]]'' and later ''Episode Prompto'', [[spoiler: Prompto is revealed to be the son of Verstael]].
* MasculineGirlFeminineBoy: Feminine Boy to Aranea's Masculine Girl. Aranea gives him some tough love but absolutely means well, she rescues him from death and she tries to protect him during his time in Gralea until she thinks he is ready to go on his own. Prompto is rather faint-hearted and mainly acts as combat support for her when they are fighting in a group.
* MaybeEverAfter: In the Royal Edition, Noctis can ask if things ever worked out between him and Cindy and he replies that he doesn't kiss and tell.
* MeaningfulName: Roughly translates to "quick silver", befitting a gunman. Also an IronicName in his childhood. This may also be part of his ShipTease with Cindy, as their surnames mean "silver" and "gold" respectively.
* MetaGuy: Realizes that his and his friends' adventure is just like a "real life RPG" and even admits that fighting {{Preexisting Encounters}} is just kind of a game to him; he's just trying to get some ExperiencePoints and {{Character Level}}s.
* MorallySuperiorCopy: [[spoiler: Prompto is a clone of Verstael, who bred clones specifically to convert into daemons and use them to power magitek troopers.]] Prompto is a loyal friend to Noctis and travels with him after the destruction and invasion of their home city by the magitek troopers.
* MultiRangedMaster: When playable, Prompto's equippable guns expand far beyond just a handgun, allowing him to use the Rapidus [=SMG=], Saggita SniperRifle, Alea Bazooka and Lumen Flare Grenades.
* MoreDakka: Trigger Happy involves Prompto, a pair of pistols and a lot of bullets.
* MyFutureSelfAndMe: Played with in ''Episode Prompto'', [[spoiler:after giving an MT a MercyKill, he sees his younger self, although it was more likely Prompto's imagination.]]
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: While Gladio will sometimes sling an arm around Noctis' shoulder, and Ignis does no more than pat him on the arm, Prompto will sometimes slap Noctis on the backside, such as in the campfire scenes prior to his Tours.
* ParentalNeglect: Prompto's family is not very involved in his life, in the OVA they never seem to be around [[spoiler: and in ''Episode Prompto'' the loading screens mention that there is little love between Prompto and his adoptive parents]].
* PluckyComicRelief: The goofiest character of the bunch, and the developers stated that he was written to serve as the Wise Guy to Noctis's StraightMan.
* PromotedToPlayable: In the DLC ''Episode Prompto''. Carried over to the main game as of the December 2017 update.
* RevolversAreJustBetter: His initial weapon. Though he can also switch to other handguns in-game.
* SadClown: All of his jokes and quips are just a way to cover up his insecurities.
* SatelliteCharacter: [[DeconstructedCharacterArchetype Deconstructed]]. A big part of his CharacterDevelopment in ''Episode Prompto'' is [[spoiler:how he spent most of his life being one to Noctis and learning not to base his entire self-worth on what his friends think of him. It takes Aranea [[GetAholdOfYourselfMan telling him just how unhealthy and self-destructive this attitude is]] for him to realize he ought to start living for his own sake and focus on what makes himself happy instead of caring so much about trying to please other people.]]
* ScannableMan: [[spoiler:Has a bar code on his wrist -- the serial number he was given as an infant -- which he later uses to unlock a door in Zegnautus Keep.]]
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: The Sensitive Guy to Gladio's Manly Man. Easily the most emotional one of the group, possibly the entire game. He's quick to voice his fears (met with teasing, usually from Gladio and Noctis) and feelings throughout the game.
* ShipTease: Prompto is very smitten with Cindy, even planning on buying a car so he has an excuse to see her more.
** To complete the circle, Prompto uses guns in combat, pretty much similar to Cid during his younger days with Regis.
** He was also smitten with Aranea after meeting her, at one point the others teasing him whom should he pick between the two.
** He was so absolutely desperate to be Noctis's friend that he engaged in a campaign of brutal physical exercise, completely transforming how he looked. He thought he had no chance as he was, and that when he re-introduced himself Noctis didn't recognize him (he did).
* SteelEarDrums: He uses very big guns, with very large rounds, enough to critically injure high level opponents at times, yet is able to walk away as if it's nothing. [[spoiler:It's possible this was deliberately engineered, since he was intended for the Magitek army.]]
* StepfordSmiler: Type A, he has a lot of insecurities about his skills in combat and [[spoiler:the fact that he's from Niflheim]] beneath all of that enthusiasm and dorkiness. ''Episode Prompto'' shows that he's not the same person that we see when he's separated from the others.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: [[spoiler:Due to being made using Verstael's DNA, he looks like him in his younger years.]]
* TechnicolorEyes: His eyes also have a shade of purple, [[spoiler:possibly hinting at his origins as part of a magically enhanced CloneArmy]].
* ThrowDownTheBomblet: When playable he carries grenades which can be used for area damage, but its primary use is to induce the vulnerable status so he can use his Crackshot ability.
* TomatoInTheMirror: [[spoiler:Learning how he is a clone of Verstael really took an emotional toll on him.]]
* TookALevelInBadass: Zig-zagged. He went from being [[FormerlyFat overweight]] and timid to the confident, friendly, skinny kid he is now all on his own after Luna gave him a little kick-start, but later on in the game it becomes clear that neither losing weight nor affecting a happy-go-lucky personality actually did much (if anything at all) to help Prompto's deep-seated insecurity and feelings of inadequacy. The game ''does'' address this directly, but only in a single, optional conversation that can only be had if the player chooses to spend the night at a specific motel, this of course this is explored in further detail in Episode Prompto.
* TheUglyGuysHotDaughter: Or son, in this case. Prompto's [[spoiler:father is the shriveled and disturbing Verstael]], while Prompto himself is absolutely gorgeous. [[spoiler:WordOfGod points out that though his cells have been diversified, his face at thirty is still nearly identical to Verstael's at a similar age, so even if Prompto doesn't grow to resemble him exactly, it's likely he'll fall into IWasQuiteALooker when he gets older]].
* VocalEvolution: More notably in the Japanese. As a young man his voice is incredibly high pitched, shrill even, but after the timeskip his voice changes to be deeper and more somber. Since his voice in the English version is deeper to begin with, only the tone changes after the timeskip.
* TheWatson: He is the one who asks many of the questions regarding the lore and the other three's pasts since he's a commoner and a high school friend of Noctis's, and is therefore as privy to such information as the audience would be.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Even he can't hide his origins with his appetite. Absolutely loves savory and spicy foods, and especially if they are easy to eat by the mouthful. Throughout the game, he also shows a reoccurring taste for junk food and snacks. To him, Ignis is the god of cooking, and is especially grateful that he is the team's chef.
* WeakButSkilled:
** Prompto can rack up damage quickly with his machine gun and his bazooka, but is otherwise much more vulnerable to attacks than Noct's MadeOfAir powers, Ignis's agility, and Gladio's tankiness.
** In ''Episode Prompto'', sidequest content, including one for an achievement, can have the level 35 Prompto against level 99 enemies. Proper use of weaponry, as well as proper coordination with Aranea, allows him to beat those insurmountable odds.
* WeakenedByTheLight: Prompto's Starshell ability fires a ball of light into the sky which weakens Daemons and stuns enemies momentarily.
* WouldHitAGirl: His fight with Aranea in ''Episode Prompto'' shows that despite his attitude towards a girl he likes, he also doesn't hold back when one of his animations is can be shown jumping and roundhouse kicking her if player deals enough damage when she is in the air.
* YouthfulFreckles: Fitting, since he behaves the least maturely out of the group.

The customizable avatar character of the Multiplayer expansion ''Comrades.'' A member of the original Kingsglaive who survived the fall of Insomnia. They work alongside their fellow survivors to aid the populace.

----
* ActionGirl: If you choose to make your custom character female.
* TheAtoner: Seeing as nearly all of the Kingsglaive turned traitor and all of them failed to protect Regis. It's never really clarified if the protagonist was a turncoat as well—presumably so that it's left for the player to decide—but they bear the burden of the Glaives' sins nonetheless. [[spoiler: Claiming victory against Bahamut in his final trial formally absolves the player character of these sins in the eyes of the Astrals.]]
* AutomaticCrossbows: A new weapon type added specifically for Comrades, filling a similar role to the guns usable in the main game.
* BarrierWarrior: Their standard defensive maneuver is creating protective [[BeehiveBarrier Beehive Barriers]] that block incoming attacks. Equipping them with the Just's Sigil will make them even more of one.
* BagOfSpilling: In a sense. As the Kingsglaive were some of the best fighters around under Regis, by technicality the Glaive's sustained injuries resulted in a loss of all their gear and anything beyond the Glaive-standard Warp and HyperspaceArsenal abilities. Crosses over with a player-focused twist on OverratedAndUnderleveled partially, which also carries over to AI Glaive companions since they scale to your level regardless of how strong everyone should be; by the time you can finish ''Comrades'', however, [[TookALevelInBadass you're back in full form and probably even better than before.]]
* BlackMage: Equipping the Pious's Sigil will power up the Glaive's Black Magic.
* CarryABigStick: Maces are another new weapon type added specifically to Comrades, although they're more or less just [[{{BFS}} greatswords]], functionally.
* CharacterCustomization: The customization options for your character's appearance are quite broad, allowing you to make them a PintSizedPowerhouse, a StatuesqueStunner, {{Acrofatic}}, give them a Beard, Blue Hair, TechnicolorEyes, nearly any normal human skin tone you like…or take their appearance in [[TheGenericGuy a different direction entirely]]. There are all manner of possibilities! [[spoiler: Subverted, as you're not customizing the true protagonist of the story (whose look is fixed), but rather a SupportingProtagonist for the "Comrades" expansion who shows up only in Chapter 14 in the main game as a GuestStarPartyMember and is completely irrelevant from that point onwards. The ending revolves around Noctis, not them.]] For a brief time in the PC version, interacting with Avatara in the main story could allow Noctis to assume the Glaive's appearance, along with any customization options that come with it [[VoicesAreMental sans his voice]].
* TheChosenOne: Of sorts. The player character amasses the support of the former Kings of Lucis thanks to the Royal Sigils, and then [[spoiler: ends up being the one handpicked by the Astrals to clear the Daemons around where Noctis would return to, also providing transportation for him to meet back up with the others. The chosen one to usher in the real chosen one, so to speak. Notably, this also makes the Glaive one of the very few chosen by the Astrals ''without'' some ulterior motive or despair thrown into the mix to off them - and the last currently-living pick for helping the world after the Starscourge is destroyed.]]
* ChuckCunninghamSyndrome: Just like the previous player-created avatars, in FFXI and FFXIV, the Glaive doesn't appear in VideoGame/DissidiaFinalFantasy2015, nor are they ever mentioned, in this case it’s Justified however as Noctis is in his Pre Timeskip appearance in Dissidia so he likely just hasn’t met the Glaive yet.
* DemotedToExtra: [[spoiler:You can recruit them in Chapter 14 of the main game, but they completely stop appearing in cutscenes in Chapter 15. The ending is completely focused on Noctis, and they don't even get to play a part in the final boss fight, as Noctis fights Ardyn alone]].
* DoubleJump: The Rogue's Sigil enables its bearers to perform a mid-air step after attacking.
* GlassCannon: The Tall's Sigil invokes this, in a sense; greatly increasing its bearers' offensive power, but disabling their healing magic.
* GoodMorningCrono: Their story begins with Libertus waking them up in the back of a moving truck.
* HelloInsertNameHere: You can name them whatever you want [[spoiler: but you can't name the actual protagonist, who is Noctis]].
* GuestStarPartyMember: The Glaive can show up as a guest party member in one of Cor's side quests in the expanded Insomnia map in the Royal Pack expansion. Their appearance and loadout is the same as your custom Glaive from ''Comrades''. If you don't have a Comrades save, their appearance will be randomized using the basic Kingsglaive equipment.
* HeroesPreferSwords: The Glaive can wield [[KatanasAreJustBetter Katana]], specifically, replacing the standard swords and [[{{BFS}} greatswords]] found in the main game.
* HeroicMime: Barring VoiceGrunting and such. [[spoiler:[[LampshadeHanging Lampshaded]] by Prompto when Noct and his gang team up with them in a side mission ''A Glaive out of Time''.]] [[spoiler: Or rather "DemotedToExtra GuestStarPartyMember Mime"]].
* LaserGuidedAmnesia: Waking up in the back of a truck, the player character vaguely recalls being a Kingsglaive after Libertus prods them about it, but their injuries beforehand knocked the memory right out of them. They gradually regain their memories over the course of the campaign.
* LightningBruiser: The Tall's and Warrior's Sigils both gear their bearers towards this. The Warrior's Sigil also grants its bearers the ability to DrawAggro.
%%* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe
* MagicKnight: Glaives can use both weapons and a selection of magic spells, including a shield spell, a healing spell, and an offensive spell of their choice.
* MultiMeleeMaster: As a Glaive, they share such abilities with the Lucian royal family. Much like Noctis, they can equip several different weapon types, although they have access to some weapon types that Noctis cannot use, and vice-versa.
%%* PurelyAestheticGender
* RememberTheNewGuy: The protagonist is implied to be one of the Kingsglaive whose face wasn't shown in the film, but the story mostly avoids this...at least, up until the end, where [[spoiler: they provide the boat that was mysteriously at the island that Noctis wakes up on post-TimeSkip. Considering there was no trace of this meeting in the base game and the boat was originally just sort of ''there'', it could come off as [[{{Retcon}} retconning]] the player character into the main story.]]
* StockNinjaWeaponry: Both shuriken and the aforementioned katana qualify, and even arguably the daggers. A FuumaShuriken is, of course, included.
* SupportPartyMember: The Wanderer's Sigil enables its bearers to grant their allies status buffs.
* SupportingProtagonist: [[spoiler: to Noctis. See DemotedToExtra above]].
* SuspiciouslySimilarSubstitute: Not the character themselves, but a few of the various weapons that they can use:
** The Katana is a stand-in for the sword that Noctis uses.
** The Mace is clearly one to the greatsword, being a slow, but massive weapon; it even shares some of the latter's animations.
** The Crossbow was made to perform the same function as the gun.
* TookALevelInBadass: At the start of the DLC, your Glaive is weaker than even the starting party of the main game. By the end and post-game of ''Comrades'', however, you can not only fight and defeat [[spoiler: Bahamut]], but also can take on some other powerful bosses like [[spoiler: Ifrit and Ardyn]] without the blessings and power that Noctis and his party have in the main game.
* TrueCompanions: Downplayed compared to Noctis and his friends, since by default you have no actual fixed mainstays that always fight alongside you, but your fellow glaives are with you through thick and thin on every mission as [[TitleDrop comrades.]] Of course, seeing as ''Comrades'' was created to be played multiplayer, you could always play the game with your own real-life TrueCompanions.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: A strange case. [[spoiler: The player character does survive the ten years of waiting for Noctis, and helps supply him with a boat he uses to get to the mainland. What happens to them afterward, however, goes unanswered, and they obviously don't appear in the main game at all, leaving their ultimate fate up in the air. That is, until the the main game's ''Royal Edition'' was released. In one of the new side-missions in Insomnia, Noct and the gang are send to aid one of the Glaives on a mission who turns out to be the player character from ''Comrades''. The group remembers them vaguely from their previous interactions in ''Comrades'' and make note about how their new companion [[HeroicMime isn't very talkative]]. After finishing the mission however, the Glaive simply disappears. While they're not present in the Glaives' hideout upon Noctis's return, he's told by another Glaive that the player character had said to have been honored to fight alongside him, to which Noct responds that he likewise was honored to fight alongside one of his father's Glaives. From this, it can be assumed that they stayed with their fellow Glaives in Insomnia, at least until the end of the game.]]
* WhiteMage: Equipping the Oracle's Sigil will power up the Glaive's white magic.
