!!The Grand Alliance
[[folder:Jaego Roth, captain of the ''Heldenhammer'']]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jaego_roth.jpg]]
->''"A hundred crowns to the first man to hit that thing square amidships!"''

A human navigator and leader of the Grand Alliance. He formed this team when Count Noctilus invaded his home city and burned everything to the ground. Now he's determined to find the Dreadfleet and make them pay. His ship, the Heldenhammer, is a massive floating temple sporting dozens of cannons and a steam powered hammer on the bow designed to smash enemy ships.
----
* TheDeterminator: God be damned if anyone or anything tries to stop him from having his revenge.
* HookHand: A golden ornate looking one at that.
* TheLeader: He created the Grand Alliance and ultimately drives them all forward.
* JackOfAllStats: Sporting respectable speed and the best attack stats of all ten warships, the ''Heldenhammer'' is a solid and reliable ship to use in any situation.
* UnknownRival: Starts off as this to Noctilus, but soon becomes basic rivals after the count properly meets him.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: What his story ultimately boils down to. He leads a charge of fellow pirates and seamen into treacherous waters just so he can kill the undead fiend that killed his family.

[[folder:Aranessa Saltspite, captain of the ''Swordfysh'']]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/aranessa.jpg]]
->''"Ha! No man mortal or not, can hold me prisoner for long, corpse-thing."''

Born with mutated legs and raised by sea nymphs, Aranessa is the reigning pirate lord of the seas surrounding the Galleon's Graveyard. She sold her services as a warrior and pirate to Roth knowing of the vast fortunes that lay in the graveyard. Her ship, the ''Swordfysh'', is decorated in ebony shells and sea-life and possesses a large serrated spike on the bow made for ramming opponents.
----
* ActionGirl: She's the only girl in the game, but she's just as rough and capable as every other captain, if not more so.
%%* BadassBoast: The above quote.
* DivineParentage: She is rumoured to be daughter of the sea god Manann. While there is no concrete proof, the mermaid-like mutations that she was born with and her being raised by sea-nymphs do lead credence to these rumours. In-game, this parentage is represented by the ''Blessed by Manann'' special rule, which grants her multiple re-rolls.
* TheLancer: Aranessa is the only proper pirate in the game and definitely acts like one. She only joined the Grand Alliance because of the promise of treasure and her impulsiveness irritates her teammates, mostly because it's them who have to go save her.
%%* LeeroyJenkins: Her preferred "strategy" when engaging foes.%%Is?
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: Her primary motivation for joining the Alliance is that she stands to gain a lot of treasure out of doing so.
* OurMermaidsAreDifferent: In the background material, she's descried as having been born a mutant with her legs fused together into a scaled, fish-like tail below the knee. When she grew older, she amputated her mutated legs so that she wouldn't be hated by human society.
* SeadogPegleg: After amputating her conjoined legs, she fashioned herself a pair of them using the snouts of saw sharks.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:The Golden Magus, captain of the ''Flaming Scimitar'']]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/the_golden_magus.jpg]]

The self-proclaimed sultan of the seas, the Magus is an eccentric man of magic who prides himself on his wealth and vast collection of magical items. Roth's quest into the Galleon's Graveyard caught the Magus' ears and he offered his ship to Roth's cause. The ''Flaming Scimitar'' is a pleasure barge filled with both the finest of luxuries and the mightiest of magical defenses.
----
* BewareTheSillyOnes: As odd and aloof as he may come off, none but fools dare to underestimate the Magus's ability to hold his own in a fight.
* BlowYouAway: A massive Tempest Djnn is housed on the ship and is called upon for quick bursts of air-powered speed.
* OnlyInItForTheMoney: His primary motivation for joining the Alliance. [[spoiler: Or not, according to the novelisation.]]
* EvilAllAlong: In the novelisation, [[spoiler:he turns out to have been a worshipper of Tzeench]].
* PaidHarem: He apparently keeps hordes of exotic women aboard his warship.
* PlayingWithFire: He can summon large Flame Efreets to attack his foes with flaming swords and fire breath.
* TheSmartGuy: He shares this role with Red, and specializes in magic and the mystical.
* TokenEvilTeammate: In the novelisation, [[spoiler:he's revealed to be a worshipper of Tzeentch, and to have his own darker reasons to join with the Grand Alliance against the Dreadfleet]].
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Red Brokk Gunnarson, captain of ''Grimnir's Thunder'']]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/brokk_gunnarsson.jpg]]
->''"Axes, lads; looks like we're in for a proper fight after all!"''

A dwarven engineer who helped design and build many of the dwarf navy’s iron clad armada. He was on the trail of a rogue dwarf builder who was rumored to be in the Galleon's Graveyard when he encountered Roth. Seeing as how they both were heading in the same direction, Red decided to assist the man in taking down the Dreadfleet. ''Grimnir's Thunder'' is an ironclad steamboat made to withstand even the toughest of conditions. It comes equipped with several dwarf zeppelins that can be repaired and launched from its dock.
----
* HairTriggerTemper: A trait that is shared by all members of his family.
* FieryRedhead: He has a flowing crimson beard that accompanies his volatile temper.
* MightyGlacier: What it lacks in speed, ''Grimnir's Thunder'' makes up for in its bulk and firepower.
* PlayingWithFire: Flare cannons make up most of the ''Thunder''[='s=] armament.
* TheSmartGuy: He shares this role with the Magus, and specializes in machines and metalworks.
%%* TheRival: To Tordeck.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Prince Yrellian, captain of the ''Seadrake'']]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/yrellian.jpg]]
->''"One should always choose the lesser of two evils. How best to discern which is which..."''

Yrellian was once an elven noble who loved the sea and dreamed of sailing away. However, when his ambitions led to the disappearance of his brother, he was exiled from his kingdom. Now he's allied himself with Roth's Grand Alliance to travel to the Galleon's Graveyard in hopes of finding his brother and restoring his honor. The Seadrake is the fastest vessel in the Grand Alliance and functions as a roost to a pair of dragons loyal to the dishonored prince.
----
* TheBigGuy: An odd elven example. His expert swordsmanship and access to dragons give him this role.
* BreathWeapon: The two dragons accompanying his ship attack by breathing fire.
* FragileSpeedster: The ''Seadrake'' boats the best movements stats of the ten ships, but should it get caught off guard, it won't last long.
* ShockAndAwe: The crew of the ''Seadrake'' throw miniature bolts of lightning in addition to its basic cannons.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Count Noctilus, captain of the ''Bloody Reaver'']]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/noctilus.jpg]]
->''"The endgame is upon us, Fetch the prize, my children, and we shall teach these upstart mortals what it means to defy the Dreadfleet."''

The vampiric commander of the Dreadfleet with ambitions to control the ocean with an army of the dead. He was a nobleman who grew tired with his limited powers as a court necromancer. So he summoned all of his magic and ripped his family castle up off the ground and set it upon a floating hulk of broken ships. He christened his new vessel the ''Bloody Reaver'', gave himself the title of count, and set off to a life of inflicting horror and fright. His ship is held together by dark magic and can repair itself with the carnage of his victims.
----
* AmbitionIsEvil: He wants more and more power and will not stop until his thirst for such power is satisfied.
%%* AnimateDead: His main means of growing his army.
* TheBigBad: Leader of the Dreadfleet and responsible for the death and destruction of Roth's family.
* ButForMeItWasTuesday: The destruction of Jaego Roth's village was just another stepping stone for the Count.
* CharmPerson: The count can influence a number of sea monsters to go and attack enemy vessels.
* {{Expy}}: Of Dracula from ''Castlevania''. He's a vampiric warlock who commands an army of monsters to plunge the world into darkness and does very little bloodsucking or other vampire-like things.
* GhostPirate: The "Undead Pirate" variant, as a vampire.
* OurVampiresAreDifferent: Noctilus is seldom seen drinking blood. He'd much rather expand his undead empire or plunder other warships.
%%* TheRival: To Roth.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Vangheist, captain of the ''Shadewraith'']]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/vangheist.jpg]]

Once a cruel and cunning pirate, now a dour specter; Vangheist and his army of ghosts now wander the Galleon's Graveyard in an undead life of misery and woe. When Noctilus arrived the graveyard, he quickly bent the ghostly captain to his will, making Vangheist his personal guard dog. His ship, the ''Shadewraith'', shares its master's intangible nature and hovers above the water.
----
* TheDragon: He's the most loyal to Noctilus, even if it's against his will, and he was the first captain recruited for the Dreadfleet.
* TheDreaded: While this may apply to the fleet as a whole, Vangheist stands out as his ghostly legend was feared by pirates and sailors for many years before Noctilus rose to power.
* FlyingDutchman: The ''Shadewraith'' gives this kind of feeling with its eerie green glow, skeletal like appearance, and the fact that it never touches the water; it always hovers just above it, as if the sea itself shuns its ghostly touch.
* GhostPirate: More literally than the count, but only just.
* GhostlyChill: The ''Shadewraith'' emits a freezing wind whenever it's close by.
* GhostPirate: Vangheist is a cruel pirate captain doomed to eternally roam the seas as a spectral captain of a ghostly ship.
* ImmortalitySeeker: What he was in life. He got his wish, albeit not the way he desired.
* TheMutiny: He and his fellow crewmates turned on their captain in search of immortality. This act would set the catalyst for their current state of limbo.
* SkyPirate: In a sense. The ''Shadewraith''[='s=] special ability allows it to literally fly through the sky for a limited amount of time.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Amanhotep the Intolerant, captain of the ''Curse of Zandri'']]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/amanhotep.jpg]]

Amanhotep is a greedy and miserly mummy king of an undead city. His city was raided by Jaego Roth, who stole some of its gold to fund his campaign against the Dreadfleet. Swearing vengeance upon the navigator, he outfitted his personal ship with the worst magic and spells of his city and sailed after the human raider. He soon came across Count Noctilus and offered to assist the vampire, hoping he'd serve as bait to draw out Roth. The ''Curse of Zandri'' is a funeral barge loaded with hundreds of hexes and skeleton soldiers ready to carry out their king's will.
----
* BuildLikeAnEgyptian: The ''Curse'' has a miniature pyramid on top of its deck, in addition to the four statues depicting four pseudo-Egyptian gods.
* TheDeterminator: Amanhotep's special ability allows the player to continue rolling die until they get the outcome they want.
* NotInThisForYourRevolution: Amanhotep isn't at all interested in Noctilus' goals. All he wants is Roth's head on a silver platter.
* ThePowerOfTheSun: The large jewel mounted on the tail end of the ship can channel energy from the sun and then focus it into a heat ray that lights enemy vessels ablaze.
* TheScrooge: While he comes from an entire city of misers, Amanhotep stands out as being the biggest tightwad of them all.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Tordrek Hackhart, captain of the ''Black Kraken'']]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/tordrek_hackheart.jpg]]

A Chaos-obsessed dwarven engineer who was exiled from Barak Varr for studying forbidden arts. He's always been envious of his fellow dwarves and their skills, so he did everything he could to show them up. Using his cursed intellect, he bound demons into his machines, resulting in his personal submersible, the ''Black Kraken''. Tordrek then sold his soul to Noctilus to further increase his power and eliminate his competitors. The ''Black Kraken'' is a tentacled monstrosity that Tordeck operates alone. It rises from the deep and drags enemy ships into the deep briny blue with a mass of metal tentacles.
----
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: His enmity with Red Gunnarson was borne from how, when they were both Master Engineers in Barak Varr, Gunnarson consistently outshone him in skill and craftsmanship.
* CombatTentacles: Like its namesake, the ''Black Kraken'' uses its massive metal appendages to crush enemy warships.
* TheExile: Tordrek was stripped of his rank in the Engineers' Guild and banished from Barak Varr when he tried to murder Red Brokk Gunnarson in a fit of jealousy. He was able to fight his way out of the port on his submersible and fled north into the Sea of Chaos, eventually making his way to Zhugulzar, a port of the Dawi-Zharr, for refuge.
* GeniusBruiser: This dwarf has the power and intelligence to control his submersible by his lonesome and defend it against other ships.
* MechanicalAbomination: What the ''Black Kraken'' is viewed as by other dwarves.
* TheStrengthOfTenMen: The ''Black Kraken'' has a crew of three, yet its bio states Tordrek is the only person on the vessel. Either GameplayStorySegregation is at work, or this dwarf is much stronger that we first thought.
* SubmarinePirates: He's a renegade engineer turned pirate who sails in a demonic, automated submarine.
* TheRival: He and Red share a long and personal enmity, dating back to when they were both part of the Engineers' Guild and Tordrek's jealousy of Red's greater skill drove him to attempted murder.
* WeirdBeard: He replaced his beard with a mass of writhing mechanical tentacles, fitting with the general mechanical sea monster theme of his daemon-possessed submersible.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Skretch Half-Dead, captain of the ''Skabrus'']]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/skretch_half_dead.jpg]]
->''"Yes-yes... catch it, catch it! Sniff it out... give it to Vampire, yes, but not all of it, not all... no-no, Skretch keep some for himself..."''

The verminous leader of a clan of rat people. Skretch led his people to an untimely death when they were swallowed whole by a massive Orb Leviathan. When the creature died and its corpse floated into the Galleon's Graveyard, Count Noctilus revived the beast as an undead guardian. This also reanimated Skretch and his crew, who swore loyalty to the vampire and converted the living corpse into an obscene vessel dubbed the ''Skabrus'', which uses the rat-men's cursed warpstones to generate devastating electrical attacks.
----
* ArmorPiercingAttack: The ''Skabrus''[='=] warp lightning isn't affected by armor stats.
* TheBrute: Skretch is often sent by Noctilus to strong-arm his opponents, giving him this designation.
* ChronicBackstabbingDisorder: As a live rat-man, Skretch betrayed and killed hundreds of former allies to gain power. While he may serve Noctilus now, he has no intention of staying in the vampire's servitude.
* DirtyCoward: The rat captain's unique ability allows him to run away from any fights he gets stuck in.
* EldritchAbomination: What else would you call an undead sea monster thats been converted into a lightning belching warship by zombie rat-men?
* LightningGun: The Skabrus fires beams of warp lightning rather than traditional cannonballs. In-game, this is represented by the broadside attacks of the Skabrus [[AntiArmor ignoring armour saves]].
* NonHumanUndead: He's an undead rat person.
* RatKing: What Skretch effectively is to his zombie crew.
* TheStarscream: Skretch plans on betraying Noctilus once his goals no longer align with his own.
* YouDirtyRat: Skretch and his entire crew fit this phrase to the dot.
