They are supposedly gathering "Negative Energy" for an unknown purpose. Mad Leomon, the StarterVillain of the entire series, required Shoutmon and Ballistamon fusing into Shoutmon X2 to beat him, and Dorulumon joining the fusion to stop him from blowing up the forest zone. Olegmon, despite being a dark general who managed to hold off the heroes for a while with his brainwashing and banishment, dies to Ballistamon without any fusions needed.
