Due to its large and ever-expanding cast, this page has been split into subpages. With the exception of characters appearing in [[{{Crossover}} Symphony]], most of the playable cast has been divided by the era they associate with. Characters from Side Episodes, Mythos, Chance Encounters, and Dream Encounters should go to the subpage pertaining their origin era.

!!General Tropes
* CombatMedic: Some offensive units have the ability to heal their allies without compensating on physical damage like their staff counterparts.
* ADayInTheLimelight: In several forms:
** Most characters except for some story-relevant ones (and the 3-star ComMons) have their own Character Quests. For 4-star characters, they're consisted of two parts, while for 5-star characters, they're consisted of 3 parts. Furthermore, the additional form of said characters (Another Style and Extra Style) also add another quest for each.
** In addition to their individual character quests, some characters may also be a lot more involved in the story through the Episodes and Mythos.
* DoubleUnlock: Certain 4-star characters who receive further upgrades from story chapters or side quests (for instance, Aldo, Amy, and Miyu) get involved with this trope. Completing the necessary quest or chapter makes their 5-star Ability board ''available''. You will still need to grind Another Dungeons to gather the necessary Psalms for them.
* FragileSpeedster: Bow users are very fast, but suffer from rather low defenses and somewhat lackluster attacks.
* GlassCannon: Katana users typically have a very high Physical Attack stat and the Speed to execute them quickly, but have below-average HP and defenses.
* IdleAnimation: Characters in your party have idle animations when you leave them standing for too long. A few exceptions who do not have this are Aldo, Guildna, and Morgana.
* LethalJokeCharacter: Tank characters are usually disliked for their slow speed and low damage output in a game where hitting fast and hard is key to winning. But against opponents whose standard attacks hit hard enough to deliver a OneHitKill, their ability to DrawAggro and reinforce the team's defense can be the difference between losing the battle or holding your ground.
* MechanicallyUnusualFighter: Comes in several forms.
** Some characters break the standard weapon attack pattern by having differing attributes in some of their skills, or due to having different weapons altogether those do not quite fit the standard in-game classification. For example, Cerrine uses a whip but classified as Fist user instead, and therefore have attacks with both piercing and blunt attributes.
** Some of the later units specialize in Shade, Thunder, and Crystal -- three elements that were added in the game's later stages and operate outside the normal four members of the ElementalRockPaperScissors. They also have the Lunatic mechanic, which is a one-use temporary replacement of their normal attack that invokes a SuperMode for 3 turns.
** A few others such as AS Isuka cycles between forms and/or influenced by previous actions that gives different effects for their skills, making them tricky to use but powerful when done right.
* JackOfAllStats: Sword and Hammer users are rather balanced in terms of attack, defense, MP pools and speed.
* MightyGlacier: Ax users, and to a lesser extent Spear and Fist users, generally have great bulk and Attack, sacrificing Speed in the process.
* PlotTailoredToTheParty: Each major content update is accompanied by Encounters that introduce, or raise the rate of, characters who will be very helpful for it. For instance, Melina, Nonold and Zilva are all introduced just before the Time Mine update, and they have traits that speed up resource gathering.
* RePower: Another Style and Extra Style gives 5-star characters a different skillset and style, either reinforcing their existent role in a team or a whole new role. To hammer it home, while you can have both a vanilla and AS/ES character in your roster, you can't have both on your team.
* SquishyWizard: Offensive staff users have a very large Magic Attack stat and the MP to use their expensive spells frequently, but have the lowest HP and Physical Defense totals.
