Dave Seville’s a songwriter, as well as the guardian of the Chipmunks, and the Chipettes too as of the second live action movie. While Dave struggles to remain calm and objective, Alvin often irritates him, causing Dave to yell "Alvin!" to which Alvin responds with "Okay!" Dave plays piano and the guitar.

David ‘Dave’ Seville was originally Ross Bagdasarian’s {{stage name}}.
-----
* ButtMonkey: The StraightMan to more than five decades of the boys' comedy.
* CallingParentsByTheirName: Despite considering him their father and taking his last name as their own, the Chipmunks usually call him "Dave" and rarely "dad".
* [[CantTieHisTie Can’t Tie His Bow]]: Simon has to help him with his bow while they’re talking in ''Chipwrecked'', as Dave’s getting ready to have dinner with the captain.
* {{Catchphrase}}: Aside from his signature '''"AAAAAAAALVIIIIIIINNNNN!"''' scream, calling the boys "fellas".
* DemotedToExtra:
** In the franchise as a whole, Dave's role has grown drastically smaller over the years. In the original records and ''The Alvin Show'' he's arguably the second most central character apart from Alvin; he takes an active part in the songs (quite a few of the songs are mainly sung by Dave, with the Chipmunks providing the backup and chorus) and the central theme of the franchise is Dave trying to keep the Chipmunks, particularly Alvin, in tow... and his anger and frustration when he inevitably fails. With the 80s revival and onward, Dave was still a vital character but took much more of a background seat to the boys as their loving, but often frustrated father figure, and the Dave/Alvin conflicts were toned down in favor of conflicts between the Chipmunks themselves, particularly Alvin and Simon.
** An interesting variant occurs in the live-action movies. The first one borders on being a HumanFocusedAdaptation as Dave is arguably the main character; at least he's the one who has the clearest character arc and emotional journey, and he gets as much if not more screen-time than the Chipmunks do. The sequels tend to have him in far smaller roles -- particularly ''The Squeakquel'' where a prop mishap during a charity concert hospitalizes him and pretty much puts him out of commission for the rest of the movie. This is probably because Jason Lee was busy with ''Series/MyNameIsEarl'' at the time.
* DidNotGetTheGirl: Even though he has had several girlfriends, he has yet to get a permanent relationship. In every adaptation.
* EraSpecificPersonality: Depending on the medium, and the portrayer; additionally, each parenting style seems to be matched to whatever was considered acceptable in its respective decade:
** '''60's Dave''' ''(Bagdasarian Sr.)'' -- rather strict, overbearing and having a short fuse making him quick to losing his cool, but still loving his boys as a whole and sticking up for them when needed.
** '''80's/90's Dave''' ''(Bagdasarian Jr.)'' -- more laid back, easy going while still being easily flustered.
** '''2010's Dave''' ''(Bagdasarian Jr.)'' -- even calmer and more easy going, seldom losing his temper or raising his voice.
** The Dave from the 2000's live-action movies ''(Jason Lee)'' is a bit of an alternate take on the character from the start, but still very much reflects the decade, as he starts out as a directionless UnluckyEverydude who struggles a bit with his new surrogate father-figure role, but embraces it fully in the end.
* FourPhilosophyEnsemble: The Realist. He tends to see things for how they are and is rather stern, but still loving.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The Choleric, as he's the strict yet straight man to the Chipmunk's antics.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: [[spoiler: The reason why Vinny essentially left the boys at his doorstep]] in the 80s/90s cartoon show.
* GoodParents: Gets more prominent over time. Though he is stressed out at times, Dave has always been a very loving and caring father. The Chipmunks have to remind him sometimes that even though they can be difficult for him, they wouldn't be the same without him.
* HairTriggerTemper: When Ross (Sr.) voiced him. The Ross Jr. and Lee versions are more easy-going by comparison.
* HopelessWithTech: In the ''ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks'', Dave has to overcome his weakness with improving technology with the help of his boys, a notable difference from previous incarnations.
* InksuitActor: ''The Alvin Show'' version is the supposed caricature of Ross (Sr.), sometimes having that vertical line on Dave's chin appear, kinda like how Bagdasarian has a slight dimple in his chin.
* NervousWreck: Dave is this in the '80s intro, frantically trying to get the boys onstage before the show starts.
* PapaWolf: If anyone threatens the Chipmunks, he won't take it very well. He once grabbed his old landlord by the collar upon finding out he tried to sell them to the zoo as snake food.
* ParentsAsPeople: This has been a staple of the character ever since he adopted the Chipmunks. While he does deeply care for the boys and always tries to do right by them, he has a tendency to let frustrations get to him and lose his temper. Especially when played by Ross Sr., he can be unreasonable and unwilling to listen, and he always tries to solve things by playing himself up as a stern authoritarian figure despite ample evidence that this doesn't work.
* SayMyName: All together now: "AAAALLLLLLVVIIIIIIIIIIIIINNNN!!!!", which he shouts ''a lot''.
* SpikyHair: In ''Meet Frankenstein'' (though it may cross as {{anime hair}}) and ''Meet the Wolfman''.
* TeamDad: As a stern, but loving father figure to the Chipmunks.
* TookALevelInKindness: He's considerably nicer to the Chipmunks, starting in the '80s series.
* {{Tuckerization}}: His name was original the StageName for Rostom “Ross” Bagdasarian.
[[/folder]]

!!The Chipmunks
Three singing, anthropomorphic chipmunk brothers under the management and parental vision of Dave Seville.

[[folder:Trope as Trio]]
* AscendedExtra: In the early years of the franchise, especially under Ross Bagdasarian Sr., Simon and Theodore were little more than just backup/contrasts to the irascible scene-stealer Alvin; either they were accomplices in his conflicts with Dave or they were the the two who did ''not'' get up to mischief while he ''did''. After Ross Jr. and Janice Karman took over the franchise, both Simon and Theodore got a lot more character and a lot more to do. It's especially noticable with Simon, because Theodore ''did'' get ADayInTheLimelight every so often under Ross Sr., but Simon never did.
* ACappella: Being singing chipmunks, it comes with the talent. Notable ones reside in the ''Alvin and the Chipmunks'' CGI film, where they give their great renditions of "Bad Day," "Only You" and "Funkytown."
* BabyTalk: In ''Little Alvin and the Mini-Munks''.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** [[spoiler: The Chipmunks saves an unconscious Stanley the Eagle in a nick of time before he could fall off a statue in the episode “Eagle in Love” of ''The Alvin Show''.]]
** [[spoiler:Comes to “Frankie” the Frankenstein Monster’s defense]] at the end of ''Meet Frankenstein''.
* BirdsOfAFeather: When the Chipmunks are with their respective individual Chipette counterpart. However, Alvin and Brittany are the exception in that they verge towards TooMuchAlike.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The CGI films began to embody this (Theodore is the lightest of his brothers, comparable to blond, while Simon is an apparent brunet with his fur, and Alvin comes in with reddish-brown fur) and now the CG-animated series has them with human hair similar to the Chipettes.
** Blond = Theodore
** Brunet = Simon
** Redhead = Alvin
* BoyBand: When they dwell into the Pop genre.
* CastCalculus: At '''six''' with The Chipettes.
* CharacterExaggeration: Both Alvin and Theodore's characters get exaggerated quite a bit in the 2015 series; Alvin's big imagination and flights of fancy have increased to the point where he's become a borderline {{Cloudcuckoolander}} who jumps to the most bizarre conclusions and quite a few of his trademark schemes run on InsaneTrollLogic. Theodore has become much more naive, innocent and gullible, and pretty much an ExtremeDoormat, and seems a lot younger than his brothers. Only Simon escapes the exaggeration.
* [[ChildPopStar Child Pop Stars]]: The Chipmunks' naturally set in as musical acts by choice, and their age throughout the incarnations range from children to teens (CGI films). Dave is their parental guardian, manager, and at times, producer.
* ChromaticArrangement: TropeCodifier if not TropeNamer:
** Red = Alvin
** Blue = Simon
** Green = Theodore
* ClothesMakeTheLegend: Overlaps with LimitedWardrobe. All three of the chipmunk brothers in general, but specifically Alvin. One half of a pair can wear green, the other half can wear blue, but there probably won't be much recognition unless there's that [[IconicOutfit familiar, red piece of clothing with that huge, yellow letter "A"]].
* ComicTrio
** Moe = Alvin
** Larry = Simon
** Curly = Theodore
* CoverAlbum: Majority of their discography, you can say.
* CoverVersion: The Chipmunks' modus operandi outside the fourth wall, as they cover music from well known artists or songs. Though they ''have'' come out with original music, and their CG-animated series have all original songs so far.
* DisappearedDad: Their biological father has never been seen, mentioned or referenced in the 80s/90s cartoon.
* DistressedDude: [[spoiler:All of them in ''The Chipmunk Adventure''.]]
* DivergentCharacterEvolution: Simon and Theodore started off having little personality outside more well behaved counterparts to Alvin. Starting from the 80s series, they gain more individual spotlight and foibles of their own.
* DoorStopBaby: Well, ''babies'', but anyway, this is how Dave first met them in the 80s/90s show.
* FreudianTrio:
** Alvin - Id
** Simon - Superego
** Theodore - Ego
*** TheMcCoy = Alvin
*** TheSpock = Simon - In the ''Franchise/StarTrek'' parody, ''very'' literally.
*** TheKirk = Theodore
* HappilyAdopted: To guess who.
* HappilyMarried: In the 80s episode "Big Dreams", they're each shown to have married their chipette counterparts in both alternative futures.
* {{Harmony}}: Got to give credit to the Bagdasarians, The Chipmunks can do some fantastic harmonies.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: Theodore is the nicest of the chipmunks, serving as the MoralityPet to Alvin, who is an egotistical AttentionWhore. Simon stays inbetween due to him being the smart one and his constant bickering with Alvin.
* ParentalAbandonment: In the 2007 movie, Simon explains to Dave that chipmunks only care for their young for a week followed by Alvin stating their parents were hippies and left early to join a commune.
* RockTrio: Although they tend to play the basic musical instruments of this trope, the three do occasionally play other instruments as well.
** Guitar = Alvin
** Keyboard/Bass = Simon
** Drums = Theodore
* RodentsOfUnusualSize: Unusually human-sized animal hybrids. Averted as of the live action movies where they are now {{Lilliputians}} like real chipmunks.
* SameSexTriplets: Self explainable. Chipmunks give birth in litters and The Chipmunks are one.
* ScrewballSquirrel: All three of them are troublemakers, often getting on the nerves of Dave.
* SelfBackingVocalist: The Chipmunks have done this quite a bit, but it's more prevalent with the more modern incarnations, like the music connected to the CGI films and the CG-animated show.
* SensitiveGuyAndManlyMan: Theodore (sensitive), Alvin (manly), and Simon (manly to Theodore and sensitive to Alvin). Theodore is sweet, kind and innocent. Alvin is prideful, impulsive and rude. Simon is basically in-between since he’s less naive than Theodore, but more polite than Alvin.
* SpotlightStealingTitle: The franchise is officially called '''ALVIN''' and The Chipmunks.
%%* UnwittingPawn: [[spoiler:In ''Chipmunk Adventure''.]]

The lead vocalist of the band and main character, Alvin is an impulsive and charming AttentionWhore who always seems to make up hare-brained schemes to get what his goal is at the time, whether it be trying to help his brothers, keeping Dave from figuring something out, or getting out of a sticky situation.
-----

* TheAce: Throughout the franchise, Alvin is shown to excel in many areas - he's part of the popular/cool kids, musically gifted (a great vocalist, a good dancer, raps, reeks with charm and stage presence, and plays multiple instruments), athletic (plays basketball, football, soccer, etc.), and has legit [[CoolBoard skateboarding]] skills. In short, he's crazy talented.
* AFriendInNeed: Alvin's there for those he cares about when he notices they're going through issues and/or are feeling down.
* AgentMulder: Aliens, monsters, zombies, conspiracies... Alvin believes in everything, and his gullibility is often the source of problems in the family.
* AntiHero: Alvin's flawed, but his heart bears no real evil, and he has set moral guidelines. He nonetheless lacks ''proper'' heroic traits that would bring to question a full TheHero status.
* AttentionWhore: He likes being in the spotlight and can get rather petulant if that attention is taken away.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Alvin and Brittany are forever fighting, but often express romantic feelings towards each other.
* BigBrotherInstinct: As leader of the trio, Alvin feels the need to protect his brothers, Simon and Theodore, even if they aren't strictly younger than him. In ''The Squeakquel'', he saves Simon from drowning in a toilet and attacks some bullies who were picking on Theodore. Later, he and Simon save Theodore from an eagle at the zoo.
* BookDumb: Alvin has been shown to struggle at school more than the others.
%%* BrattyHalfPint: He tends to use his loud mouth to make things difficult as an attempt to get his way.
* BroughtToYouByTheLetterS: Alvin's usual shirt has a large 'A'.
* BrutalHonesty: Alvin's capable of telling a hard truth, at times unwittingly when he gets frustrated or annoyed. While some characters do need it, he can feel guilty if it does hurt someone's feelings.
* CatchPhrase: "Aw, nuts," "Yes, Dave?" and "Okay!"[[note]]The latter two were mainly heard on the albums and on ''The Alvin Show''[[/note]]
* CharacterTic: Alvin tends to do fancy tricks between his fingers and hands with an object (be it apple, basketball, a game chip in ''Chipwrecked'', etc.). They vary in twirls, roll over shoulders, spins, and throws/catches. It highlights his [[TheAce high level of skill across disciplines]] and his inability to stay still or focus.
* ChickMagnet: Despite him being an anthropomorphic chipmunk, girls (yes, ''human'' girls) find him charming and cute. ''The Chipmunk Adventure'' had him be kissed full on the lips by a Mexican human girl and ''The Squeakquel'', ironically where he's designed at his most realistic chipmunk form, highlighted his [[{{Kidanova}} popularity]] when he starts school.
%%* DeadpanSnarker: Not as much as Simon, but ''definitely'' there.
* DependingOnTheWriter: He can be a {{Kidanova}}, and usually very successful with girls, or a CasanovaWannabe when his scheme to win a girl's heart backfires on him.
* DramaQueen: Alvin over-acts frequently and spectacularly when expressing his emotions. He rarely asks Dave for things, begging or pleading instead. He doesn't just get annoyed, he explodes. He's never just disappointed, he's wallowing in misery. His drama is sometimes manipulative, sometimes played for comedy, and sometimes ignored, but it's a trait consistent across incarnations.
* EarNotch: His [=CGI=] self in the movie franchise, perhaps to identify him as the scrappiest member of the group.
* EveryoneHasStandards: Alvin may be a jerk at times, but there's simply lines he would ''not'' cross and he's inherently good. It's what sets him miles apart from the franchise's typical school bullies or antagonists.
%%* FatalFlaw: The major ones are his greed and egocentrism. Heck, majority of his [[ZanyScheme Zany Schemes]] result from this.
* FearlessFool: Alvin will often push his luck in his schemes even risking injury or death if he believes they will work.
* FieryRedhead: As of the [=CGI=] series. The same HotBlooded, emotional DramaQueen he's always been.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: He's the Foolish in comparison to Simon's more Responsible nature, who helplessly attempts to convince Alvin to ''not'' do what he plans to.
* FourPhilosophyEnsemble: The Optimist. He's very prideful and always believes his crazy plans will work.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The Sanguine, the most impulsive and strongwilled.
* GloryHound: Some of his plans are attempts at getting more famous or grabbing attention.
* GRatedMentalIllness: [[spoiler:Succumbs to this when he’s forced to drink a potion in ''Meet Frankenstein'' where he starts acting like a typical insane cartoon character laughing manically, his tongue hanging out, spinning eyes, and pulling pranks.]] He gets better though.
* HarshVocals: Alvin is quite the accomplished vocal impressionist and imitator. He can manipulate his voice to fit in with a music genre stylistically (being that The Chipmunks do [[CoverVersion Cover Versions]] of songs). So when the song calls for it, he tends to use harsh vocals (in the lesser extent of this, he's raspy).
* TheHedonist: Most of the inspiration that motivates Alvin's actions is the inward desire for fun as well as the opportunity to get what ''he'' wants. There's little to no self-control and he runs on impulse. Regarding the needs of others isn't on his mind at that point in time, and it can seep him into {{Jerkass}} territory in the moments he doesn't really aim to be a {{Jerkass}}. This is also the reason why he tends to make pretty simple, mundane things more complicated than they need to be.
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Also OddCouple with Simon, especially in ''Meet the Wolfman''.
* HiddenDepths: Revealed in a rare BigEgoHiddenDepths episode, "Alvin in Analysis". Alvin's ''very'' self-assured, but it's shown he has his insecurities and it may be the reason why he inflates his own ego more than he should. He also seems to stand behind his talent, fame, and charm, because when he feels it's going awry in some way or when he feels he's not getting the spotlight, the layers of his own glorification peels off. And when it peels...well, the [[TookALevelInJerkass vindictive jerkass]] can lash out as a defense mechanism. He can plot against whoever is in the way. "Dr. Simon and Mr. Heartthrob" actually made this a focus point.
-->'''Dr. Wisenheimer:''' Why is fame so important to you? What is it a substitute for, Alvin? What is it that you're afraid of?
-->'''Alvin:''' [breaking down in tears] [[BeneathTheMask Failure! I'm afraid of being a flop, a nobody, and taking everybody with me! It'll be my fault, I know it, I know it!]]
* HighSchoolHustler: Though can be Elementary depending on what media you're going by. He always seems to make up a ZanyScheme to accomplish his goals.
%%* HotBlooded: At times.
* IncrediblyLongNote: There's a genuine reason why he's lead vocal after all, franchise star perks aside. ''The Squeakuel'' played with it when they took The Chipmunks' cover of "Stayin' Alive" (from ''Club Chipmunk: The Dance Mixes'') by making it about cheeseballs and having Alvin hit that long note as he went slow mo.
* InferioritySuperiorityComplex: His overblown sense of superiority stems from covering up the fact that he doesn't want to fail, as in, to fail himself, his family, or his friends. See HiddenDepths.
%%* InsaneTrollLogic: Alvin's way of reasoning. It baffles Simon specifically.
* ItsAllAboutMe: He's pretty selfish at times, and enjoys attention greatly. He gets called out on this frequently.
* ItsAllMyFault: Perhaps one of Alvin's best traits is that he can realize his own wrongdoings and how it affects others around him. He goes out of his way [[MustMakeAmends to make amends]] for them.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Although Alvin is quite the self-centered {{Jerkass}}, he does care about his brothers and tends to turn things around as best he can once he knows he went too far. More so if any one of his siblings gets sad or disappointed by his actions. There's no personal goal to be ''purposefully'' malevolent (and when he is, although one can argue, it's more to sabotage than to hurt), he simply tends to get too ahead of himself without thinking of the possible impact it brings to those around him for the most part.
* KarmaHoudini: An episode in the CGI series has Alvin lie about having a brother who races through the Chinese jungles. Dave continues the lie, but then he is blamed for it. Come the end of the episode, after Dave and the Chipmunks make a video of his son racing in the jungles, the Chipmunks spill the secret, throw Dave under the bus and Alvin (who started the lie in the first place) has no onscreen punishment.
* {{Kidanova}}: When he actually doesn't try too hard and doesn't have malign intentions (as they don't get rewarded when it comes to him).
* LargeHam: Tends to over dramatize and exaggerate his feelings, ideas (as in, his active imagination), or what he says. Sometimes on purpose, sometimes not.
* LaserGuidedKarma: Has an immunity to KarmaHoudini, refreshingly so. Dave also makes certain he does not go unscathed.
* TheLeader: He is the leader of the group and when together with The Chipettes, the leader of all six.
* LikesOlderWomen: There's ''at least'' an episode in each series where he, if not outright flirting, gets a PrecociousCrush on an older woman (usually a teacher and/or principal).
* LittleBigBrother: His original design was dwarfed by both of his "little" brothers. Likely to better brush off of their new personalities, meek and naive Theodore was designed to be diminutive to him, though the more mature Simon remained lankier than Alvin.
* LovableRogue: He's a troublemaker but his PetTheDog moments and charming personality keep him likable.
* ManipulativeBastard: His smarts lie in manipulating people and how to make them do what he needs them to do. What that is depends on the ploy he cooks up that day. He certainly knows how to get reactions out from others and how to use them to his advantage at least. Simon and Brittany are a lot harder to fool (and they've struck back the times when they do realize what he's up to), but they still fall victim since he knows what strings to pull.
* MiddleChildSyndrome: Shades of it. He was the oldest (in the 80s series at least), but his archetype always fitted this in his trio of siblings. Alvin's the BlackSheep, the troublemaker, he acts out, he's loud, and lives for attention in comparison to his more moralistic, upright brothers. He also appears to have doubts in how Dave feels about him as a son in the films and the CG-animated series.
* MoodSwinger: He can change emotions pretty quickly, and his over dramatic reactions to almost everything places him as really high in enthusiasm or at the bottom in exaggerated despair.
* MrViceGuy: Alvin's a good kid at the core and plenty of examples show that, but he still suffers from various flaws; ambition, greed, hedonism, impulsiveness, pride, envy, selfishness, pettiness, etc.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: When Simon loses his personality, Alvin has to become the authority figure in ''Chipwrecked''. When he tries to stop Simon from dancing with Jeanette, this happens:
-->'''Alvin:''' [[FirstNameUltimatum SIIMMOOOONN]]!!!!\
'''Brittany:''' Alvin, you're starting to sound like [[LampshadeHanging Dave]].\
'''Alvin:''' [[BigNo NNNNOOO]]!
* PhraseCatcher: Alvin's antics frequently cause Dave to cry out the trio's names, but the loudest and most frequent name he calls is "AAALLLLVVVVIIIN!". Alvin's response is "OKAY!!!"
* RoundedCharacter: He harbors both good and bad qualities with some HiddenDepths, and his complexity is such that one can analyze and explore his established character traits in spades.
* RedIsHeroic: His signature color.
* RedOniBlueOni: Alvin is impulsive and emotional (and wearing a red shirt/hat), a [[{{Foil}} contrast]] to Simon's calm and scientific mindset (and blue clothing).
* {{Retcon}}: Is the youngest in the '60s cartoon, the oldest in the '80s cartoon and films, and the middle child in the 2015 cartoon.
* SiblingRivalry: While it's more frequent on Simon's side, out of his brothers, it's usually ''him'' who Alvin feels any sense of threat towards. They're the closest of the siblings but are habitually at odds with each other as well. Their relationship has been a big focus of the franchise, seeing as they are [[{{Foil}} foils]].
* SiblingYinYang: With Simon. Alvin is irresponsible and lazy while Simon is intelligent and hard-working.
%%* SmallNameBigEgo: The "small name" depends on the media, but the big ego is always consistent.
%%* SnarkToSnarkCombat: With Simon and/or Brittany.
%%* TemporarilyAVillain: Often plays the villain in parody episodes or specials.
%%* TooMuchAlike: Him and Brittany. When you have two [[AttentionWhore Attention Whores]] with big egos headbutting, getting along isn't on the list of priorities as much as besting each other is.
* {{Tsundere}}: With Brittany. They are constantly at odds with one another and fight, but they do show that deep down they love each other.
* VitriolicBestBuds: They're brothers, but this summarizes his and Simon's relationship verbatim. How they play off each other may be the most dynamic interaction of the main cast.

The tallest, Simon has an IQ north of Einstein, possessing a dry sense of humor as well as a keen wit. He takes charge when Alvin goes too far with his hairbrained schemes. Simon loves Alvin, although he secretly worries that they share the same gene pool.
-----
* AgentScully: He is often very skeptical about Alvin's crazy theories and with good reason.
* AlliterativeName: The letters of his first and last name both begin with an "S".
* BewareTheNiceOnes: He’s usually kind and patient. However, should anything upset him, he will go off in a fit of rage. A couple of examples are in ''The Squeakquel' where he attacks a couple of bullies for picking on Theodore and even beating up Alvin a couple of times for choosing to impress a group of jocks over being with his brothers.
* BigDamnHeroes: [[spoiler:In ''Meet Frankenstein'', he arrives little late along with Frankie and Theodore to save Alvin from the potion forcibly given to him by Doktor Frankenstein that’ll make him into a zany cartoonish monster, but he does save his big brother before the process could be completed.]] Then later, [[spoiler: when the potion Alvin underwent takes effect during the premiere, Simon makes an antidote to cure Alvin when he does turn into a monster.]]
* BigBrotherInstinct: He attacks the bullies for picking on Theodore in ''The Squeakquel'', despite telling Alvin [[HypocriticalHumor violence will solve nothing]] just a second ago.
* BigLittleBrother: He's younger than Alvin in the 80s series, but is taller than him.
* BlindWithoutEm: Completely and utterly blind without his glasses.
* BlueMeansSmartOne: Simon is the smartest of the Chipmunks (as indicated by his [[SmartPeopleWearGlasses glasses]]) and is almost always clad in blue.
* BrainyBrunette: His [=CGI=] incarnations, both films, and cartoon.
* ButtMonkey: Not to the extent of Dave, but he's sometimes the butt of jokes between the three brothers.
* CharacterTic: Simon, whenever conversing about something serious, will remove his glasses, wipe them with a handkerchief, and then place them back on his face.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: The early Simon is very unlike the later one. In the original songs and ''The Alvin Show'' he's TheGenericGuy with no standout personality traits except a slightly more advanced vocabulary than his brothers. The 80s cartoon more clearly establishes him as TheSmartGuy from the start, but still fairly generic. It was the result of Janice Karman's increased focus on his development that turned him into the DeadpanSnarker he'd become known as.
* ChildProdigy: Certified genius.
* TheConscience: He frequently corrects Alvin (and sometimes also other characters like his brother Theodore and The Chipettes) if he believes his actions wrong (and is often correct).
* DeadpanSnarker: When the '80s series came around, Simon got snarkier as the series went on, from occasionally snarky in the first couple of seasons to practically every response being sarcastic.
* TheDragAlong: Alvin often drags him unwillingly in his adventures.
* ExpressiveMask: See below.
* EyeGlasses: In the 1960s series as well as in the ''Chipmunk Christmas'' special which doubles as [[ExpressiveMask expressive glasses]].
* TheEveryman: In the 1960s series.
* TheFinickyOne: Depending on the story he can misplace his sense of humor, or start like this before finding it.
* FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling: He's the responsible one to Alvin's foolishness. He's the one that knocks sense into his brother. Or tries to.
* FourPhilosophyEnsemble: The Cynic. He always assumes the worst will happen and is the most likely to oppose to Alvin's zany schemes.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The Melancholic, due to him being introverted, pessimistic and rational.
* TheGenericGuy: In the 60s show.
* GrammarNazi: Played for utter hilarity arguing with country star Aaron Tippin in ''Chipmunks in Low Places'' and "There Isn't Anything Wrong With The Radio". ''("Just sing the song the way I wrote it, kid!")''
* HeterosexualLifePartners: Very much with Alvin in ''Meets the Wolfman'', and arguably at other times, despite being an OddCouple.
* HiddenDepths: He can be just as [[NotSoAboveItAll vindictive and as petty as Alvin]], and can be quite vengeful against him when Alvin uses him or the others as tools to a scheme (if he finds out), to teach him a deserved lesson. He's also shown AlwaysSomeoneBetter sentiments when it comes to his brother's huge popularity or natural charisma, expressing insecurities about how easily the spotlight comes to Alvin. This is quite consistent, as this is implied in ''Chipwrecked'', becomes the plot point of "Dr. Simon and Mr. Heartthrob" (an important character-driven episode for both him ''and'' Alvin) in the 80s series, and is practically prevalent in the CGI-series, with episodes like "Simon for President", "Simon the Superb", and "Munk Man".
* IntelligenceEqualsIsolation: Simon's a genius, but he's also nervous, introverted, and veers into this at times, to the point where he claims a disappointing kid in the 2015 series is "the best friend I've ever had". On the other hand, Alvin's constant begging for help, attention, and monitoring subverts this, which is probably why Simon keeps letting him.
* InsufferableGenius: When he gets too preachy or smug.
* TheLancer: To Alvin and it's the position he bears when all six chipmunks are together.
* LovableNerd: His defining trait.
* MadScientist: Sometimes in play roles. He often is working on a science experiment.
* NerdGlasses: These have always defined him. {{Exaggerated}} when he gets a truly atrocious pair temporarily (stated as his "old glasses") in the [=CGI=] series. He's then picked on for them.
* NotSoAboveItAll: Especially in the 80's show, "more mature than Alvin" doesn't necessarily mean "always mature and responsible." He can be quite childish, especially when prodded.
* PairTheSmartOnes: With Jeanette who is smart (and clumsy) just like him.
* RedOniBlueOni: Alvin is impulsive and emotional (and wearing a red shirt/hat), a [[{{Foil}} contrast]] to Simon's calm and scientific mindset (and blue clothing).
* {{Retcon}}: He becomes the oldest Chipmunk by eight seconds in the 2015 cartoon.
* SexierAlterEgo: [[spoiler: His ‘Simone’ persona in ''Chipwrecked'',]] ''and'' 'Mr. Heartthrob' from the episode "Dr. Simon & Mr. Heartthrob".
* SiblingYinYang: With Alvin. Alvin is irresponsible and lazy while Simon is intelligent and hard-working.
* TheSmartGuy: The brain of the group.
* SnarkToSnarkCombat: With Alvin.
* SpotlightStealingSquad: Inverted and played straight. Simon was overshadowed in ''The Alvin Show'' and a number of early episodes of the '80s cartoon; Janice Karman later attempted to make up for this by focusing quite a bit on Simon and gave him a popularity boost he enjoys to this day.
* TwiceShy: To Jeanette in ''Chipwrecked''. They are shy about their relationship, however, it is obvious that he cares for her.
* VerbalTic: (When voiced by Ross Bagdasarian Jr.) Simon takes a lot of slight pauses when speaking and draws out his words, giving him a noticeably distinct manner of speaking.
* VitriolicBestBuds: They're brothers, but his and Alvin's dynamic consist of this.
* WiseBeyondHisYears: Played with. Simon's incredibly intelligent and deeply thoughtful, but only sometimes profound. A lot of the time he's not especially more mature than his brothers.

Not only is he the child of innocence as well as the youngest, but Theodore is shy, loving, sensitive, chubby, gullible, trusting and naïve. In short, he is an easy target for Alvin's manipulations, often holding the swing vote between his two brothers' choices of action. Simon appeals to Theodore's better nature while Alvin goes straight to bribery.
----
* AntiHero: [[spoiler: When a werewolf in ''Meet the Wolfman'', he plays a NominalHero Type .]]
* AllLovingHero: Ever since the days of ''WesternAnimation/TheAlvinShow'' Theodore's been this, bordering on FriendToAllLivingThings, and sometimes taking on ExtremeDoormat tendencies. Says quite a lot about him that when a bully is stealing his food, he makes sure to cater his lunch for the bully's tastes.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: The nicest of the brothers, but do not get him angry.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** [[spoiler: In ''Meet Frankenstein'', he arrives little late along with Frankie and Simon to save Alvin from the potion forcibly given to him by Doktor Frankenstein that’ll make him into a zany cartoonish monster, he but does save his big brother before the process could be completed.]] Then later, [[spoiler: when the potion Alvin underwent takes effect during the premiere, he helps Simon make an antidote to cure Alvin when he does turn into a monster.]]
** In ''Meet the Wolfman'', [[spoiler: despite being a werewolf, he manages to retain enough of his senses to fight off Talbot!Wolfman in order to protect Eleanor from the older Wolfman.]]
* BigBeautifulMan: While "beautiful" is not the right word. Theodore is the chubby one of the group, but he's still portrayed as the cute one.
* BigEater: Boy, does he love to eat.
* BigFun: He's the chubbiest out of his brothers and has a fun-loving, excitable personality.
* TheBigGuy: Out of his three brothers, he's the biggest.
* BigLittleBrother: His 1960s incarnation was taller than eldest brother Alvin, though middle brother Simon was still the tallest.
* CharacterTic: His “Heheheheh” laugh at everything in the original cartoon.
* CrossDressingVoice: When Jan voices him.
* TheCutie: He's the youngest, and his kindness and innocence make him also the most lovable.
* ADayInTheLimelight: ''The Alvin Show''’s episode “Theodore’s Dog.” He also got to be the star of a few song segments.
* TheDitz: He has traits of this, with his mind working in strange ways at times... but he's not actually ''stupid,'' just childish and naïve.
* DumbBlond: He's settled into this by the CGI series.
* TheEveryman: Sometimes fell into this role in ''The Alvin Show'', though he got a clearer personality and more screen time than Simon did.
* ExtremeDoormat: And it makes it easier for bullies to target him.
* FatComicRelief: Theodore is a bit heavyset and acts silly.
* FatIdiot: He's the fattest Chipmunk and can be pretty dim.
* FoodAsBribe: This is usually how Alvin ropes him into his schemes.
* FourPhilosophyEnsemble: The Apathetic. He doesn't really take a side during Alvin and Simon's disputes and would rather not get involved.
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: The Phlegmatic, a shy, quiet little guy.
* FunnyBackgroundEvent: The main thing that kept him from becoming a completely [[TheGenericGuy Generic Guy]] on ''The Alvin Show'' was that he was a frequent provider of these, especially during song segments.
* TheGenericGuy: Again, in ''The Alvin Show'' he sometimes came across as this, though not as much as Simon.
* GodGuise: By a tribe of natives in ''The Chipmunks Adventure''.
* TheHeart: Of the three, he's the one that keeps the family together.
* TheIngenue: A male example. He is the nicest and sweetest member of the Chipmunks. But he is also very naive and trusting, and easily duped, with Alvin taking advantage of this in his schemes.
* InvoluntaryShapeshifter: [[spoiler: In the animated movie ''Meet the Wolfman'' when he’s bitten by a werewolf.]]
* {{Keet}}: He has some shades of this.
* KidAppealCharacter: He is considered innocent and gullible and is portrayed to be the youngest.
* LovableCoward: Theodore is by far the most timid and cowardly of the brothers.
* MoralityPet: For Alvin.
* NiceGuy: He is best described as loving, sensitive, and innocent.
* ThePollyanna: Sometimes. As Simon puts it in ''"Meets Frankenstein."''
--> "That little glass of yours is ''always'' half full, isn't it?"
* PuppyLove: With Eleonor.
* SarcasmBlind: He often has problems understanding it when Alvin or Simon are being sarcastic.
* ShrinkingViolet: He has trouble standing up for himself. The episode ''Dave's Wonderful Life'' shows that he used to be shy and would have become a hermit without Dave's influence.
* SignatureLaugh: Had a very distinct giggle on The Alvin Show. It was practically a VerbalTic.
--> "Here's the boy who giggles known as Theodore." - from the opening theme.
* StrawVegetarian: {{Averted}} in the direct-to-VHS movies at least. He's feminine and naive but lacks most of the other factors. It seems that even though they're chipmunks the others don't seem to show the same vegetarianism as Theodore. Although Theodore has order hamburgers before, as well as has been seeing eating lunch meat.
* SupremeChef: Theodore's love for cooking is often seen in episodes such as "Father's Day Muffins" and "Every Chipmunk Tells A Story".
* WideEyedIdealist: Theodore really wants to believe the best of everyone in the world, which sometimes leaves him wide open for being manipulated by more cynical people, such as Alvin.
* WolfMan (Well, ''Munk''): [[spoiler: He gets better at the end of ''Meet the Wolfman''.]]
* YesMan: In ''TheAlvinShow'' he's pretty much the tagalong character, happy to follow Alvin's or Simon's lead.

* BreakoutCharacter: After their first appearance in the '80 series, they have become so popular and get more and more screentime overtime in the series becoming regular characters. Now the Chipettes are an integral part of the franchise and appear in all media.
* CastCalculus: At '''six''' with The Chipmunks.
* CharacterDevelopment: The Chipettes were originally conceived as [[DistaffCounterpart female mirrors]] of The Chipmunks, however, over time, they slowly began to develop more dimension and personality that distinguished them from their respective Chipmunk counterpart.
* ChromaticArrangement: Though each Chipette’s color shade is lighter/more feminine with their respective counterpart . . . although Eleanor’s questionable.

* HappilyMarried: In the 80s episode "Big Dreams", they're each shown to have married their chipmunk counterparts in both possible future scenarios.
* HumanoidFemaleAnimal: In the animated movies, they look pretty much like young human girls apart from their noses. The Chipmunks, while also anthropomorphic, look somewhat more rodent-like.
* {{Little Stowaway}}s: How they got to America from Australia in their origin story from the 80s/90s show.
* NiceMeanAndInBetween: A downplayed case, as all three of them are nice. Jeanette is shy but sweet, Brittany is the closest to the mean one because of how vain and ill temepred she is, but can be in-between, and Eleanor is nice but assertive.
* PrettyInMink: The girls wear fur-trimmed capes over their BedlahBabe outfits when they visit Antarctica in ''The Chipmunk Adventure''.

* SpotlightStealingSquad: The Chipettes have gotten more and more screentime overtime, to the point where the last episode Ruby-Spears (the first showrunning company, followed by [=DiC=]) had produced for the series doesn't have Dave or the Chipmunks themselves in it.

The lead singer and the oldest, Brittany has a pleasing facial and physical appearance, though at times can be vain and self-serving with the extreme desire to have whatever she wants, but is still very caring.
----

* AdaptationalNiceGuy:
** In contrast to the 1980's cartoon, the first two live-action films makes her friendlier and politer, making it easier for others to approach her. She is nicer and has better control over her temper than Alvin does, though she is still more temperamental than most people.
** In contrast to the 1980's cartoon, the CGI Nick series made her slightly nicer, retaining some 'diva' traits, but also making her more hardworking and polite than before.
%%* AttentionWhore: And gets annoyed if she's not in the spotlight.
* BelligerentSexualTension: Alvin and Brittany are forever fighting, but often express romantic feelings towards each other.
* BigSisterInstinct: As the leader of the trio, Brittany feels the need to protect her sisters, Jeanette and Eleanor, even if they aren't strictly younger than her.
%%* ChildishOlderSibling: She may be mature, but has a childish side in her.
%%* CoolBigSis
%%* DeadpanSnarker: Brittany is somewhat sarcastic.
* DramaQueen: Brittany over-acts frequently and spectacularly when expressing her emotions. She rarely asks for things, begging or pleading instead. She doesn't just get annoyed, she explodes. She's never just disappointed, she's wallowing in misery. Her drama is sometimes manipulative, sometimes played for comedy, and sometimes ignored, but it's a trait consistent across incarnations.
* DudeMagnet: In the 80s valentine special it was shown that she is very popular with the boys at her school, and in Chipmunk Adventure an Arab boy literally wanted to make her one of his wives when he grew up.
%%* ElmuhFuddSyndwome: In ''Mini-Munks''.
* FanservicePack: During the 80s cartoon, some episodes would have the main characters assume alternate identities. Brittany would often take the role of a FemmeFatale or TheVamp and in those episodes, her body appears more mature and curvy than normal.
* TheFashionista: She loves fashion and shows several outfits around the series. She always tries to be the most stylish and sometimes complains about Jeanette's lack of style.
%%* GloryHound
* GoGetterGirl: In the 2015 series, Brittany exhibits a greater sense of responsibility by serving duty as The Principal's assistant, a position that she takes very seriously.
* HypocriticalHumor: In the second live-action film, she calls out Alvin for not caring about anyone but himself, and she can be self-centered as well.
%%* ItsAllAboutMe: Like Alvin, she has her moments.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Brittany is just as, if not slightly more, vain and self-serving than Alvin, but she sometimes shows a kind and compassionate side. During ''The Chipmunk Adventure'' movie, she initially refuses to help Eleanor take a kidnapped baby penguin home, but relents after seeing its deep sadness and longing.
* LovableAlphaBitch: Although she's self-centered (just like Alvin) and sometimes puts her image before her sisters' (especially Jeanette) feelings (again, just like Alvin), she really does care about them (just as Alvin cares about his brothers) and usually does the right thing in the end except when she doesn't, just like Alvin.
%%* ManipulativeBitch: Tends to have a bit more morals about it than Alvin does sometimes, but is no less above it.
* NeverMyFault: Due to her ego, Brittany has been shown to be unable to admit her mistakes. She's unable to say 'sorry' in ''The Chipmunk Adventure'' after refusing to listen to Simon's advice about a hurricane.
* PinkMeansFeminine: She is the girliest of the trio, and usually wears a pink skirt with a pink top.
* ProneToTears: Something doesn't go Brittany's way, or the way she didn't want it to? Cue the tear flow!
* RedOniBlueOni: Brittany is impulsive and emotional (and wearing [[PinkMeansFeminine something pink and girly]]), a [[{{Foil}} contrast]] to Jeanette's calm and scientific mindset (and practical blue clothing).
%%* SocialClimber: Has tried to fit in with some girl posses, to the point that she writes off Jeanette.
%%* SweetTooth: In the 2015 series. In "Suck Toad", when the eponymous animal is stuck to her face, she's under strict instructions to avoid sweets and finds it really difficult.
* TenderTomboyishnessFoulFemininity: She's a vain and self-centered fashionista while her younger sister, Eleanor, is a nice and caring PassionateSportsGirl.
* {{Tsundere}}: Towards Alvin (and vice versa). They are constantly at odds with one another and fight, but they do show that deep down they love each other.

Like Simon, Jeanette is the [[BigLittleSister middle sister despite being the tallest]] and smartest of the Chipettes.
----
* AbsentMindedProfessor: Gifted with extraordinary intelligence, she often is so caught up in contemplating the universe that she forgets the simple matters of life, such as not tripping over her own feet.
* AdvertisedExtra: Despite being a major character, she gets severely shafted in ''The Squeakquel'', having around ten lines in the entire film minus the singing. She gets a larger role in ''Chipwrecked'', however.
* AllLovingHero: She feels sorry for bullies, thinking they must have [[FreudianExcuse horrible home lives]].
* BeautifulAllAlong: When SheCleansUpNicely, even ''Brittany'' is jealous.
* BigLittleSister: The middle sister of the three despite being the tallest.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Yes, even [[NiceGirl sweet, quiet Jeanette]] has her limits. One example comes from the 80s episode "Sweet Smell of Success". The gang works together to create a perfume before a client shows up, but Brittany doesn't contribute, until Jeanette (and Alvin) ''flip over'' the chair she was lounging in.
* BlindWithoutEm: Jeanette has very poor vision, and is virtually helpless without her glasses.
%%* ButtMonkey
* BrainyBrunette: Has brown hair and is TheSmartGirl of the group.
* CharacterDevelopment: Jeanette became considerably more shy and withdrawn compared to Simon, while she expressed an interest more towards literature than science.
* CharacterTic: In the 80s/90s show as well as in ''Chipmunk Adventure'', she winked a lot, usually at Simon.
* CloudCuckoolander: Gets some shades of this in ''WesternAnimation/ALVINNNAndTheChipmunks'', perhaps to make her more distinct from Simon personality-wise. Her mind goes to some very weird places sometimes, and she has odd talents like talking to cats. Not to mention the spree she goes on the minute she gets a hint of something magical.
* CuteBookworm: Likes reading, and is ''adorable''.
* TheCutie: Shares this with Theodore.
* CuteClumsyGirl: She is very clumsy and tends to knock into things often. But, as pointed by Eleanor, she is a "lovable" klutz.
* DamselInDistress: Becomes this in the third act of ''Chipwrecked''.
* DitzyGenius: She's very well-read and book-smart, but otherwise lacks common sense and general intelligence, such as putting her shoes on the wrong feet, holding signs upside-down, walking into doors or walls, tripping over untied shoelaces, falling down the stairs, etc.
* ExtremeOmnivore: Ate lipstick in ''Mini-Munks''.
* TheGlassesGottaGo: This is one of the few episodes where Jeanette is seen without her glasses.
* GranolaGirl: The 2015 version of her is very passionate for the environment, even doing a non-violent protest in one episode.
* TheHeart: The one who keeps her sisters from fighting.
* TheLancer: To Brittany.
* MoralityPet: Alvin harbors (or at least seems to) a soft spot for her ''because'' she's such a NiceGirl. She's the only character thus far he avoids being a deliberate JerkAss to and tends to speak/act more gentle around her. While rather [[HypocriteHasAPoint hypocritical coming from him]], he angrily calls out Brittany for her treatment of Jeanette in the episode "Sisters".
* NiceGirl: Is able to see the good in everybody, and is a very calm girl. In the episode when the six kids had to work out which of them was at fault for a broken statue in their school, she wasn't even a suspect.
* PairTheSmartOnes: With Simon. During the series it is a relationship that can be described as best friends who have secret crushes on one another.
* PrimAndProperBun: Her usual hairstyle.
* MatureYoungerSibling: She is more mature and sweeter compared to her sisters.
* GracefulLadiesLikePurple: Purple being a lighter color to Simon’s blue.
* TheQuietOne: In ''Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel''.
* RedOniBlueOni: Brittany is impulsive and emotional (and wearing [[PinkMeansFeminine something pink and girly]]), a [[{{Foil}} contrast]] to Jeanette's calm and scientific mindset (and practical blue clothing).
* SheCleansUpNicely: An example is in "My Fair Chipette" where Alvin transforms her into beauty pageant material.
* ShrinkingViolet: She is actually more like Theodore than Simon in a sense, as they are both sweet, timid, and shy. More so in the 80s and CGI films, however. The 2015 series has her more outgoing than how she was in the earlier series.
* TheSmartGirl: The brains of the Chipettes.
* TechnicolorEyes: She has purple eyes in the films and 2015 series.
* TwiceShy: To Simon in ''Chipwrecked''.

The youngest of her sisters, Eleanor has a lot in common with Theodore in terms of body shape, interests, and color of attire, but she is braver and more athletic.
----
* {{Acrofatic}}: A gifted athlete and the most athletic out of the six next to Alvin, despite her larger physique.
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: In the live-action movies, she has a much softer and childish personality; she acts almost exactly like Theodore and seems extremely naive.
* BareMidriffsAreFeminine: She can be the most assertive but nice member of the trio, and in ''The Chipmunk Adventure'' she wears a winter jacket that shows her belly button.
* BigBeautifulWoman: Eleanor is a little more chubby compared to her sisters, but again very cute.
* TheBigGirl: Of the Chipettes, she is the biggest and most athletic.
* BigEater: Not as much as Theodore, but she still has a big appetite.
* CharacterDevelopment: Became more outgoing and far more active than Theodore, playing just about any sport the school had to offer, while still maintaining a passion for culinary delights. She became more, also, a DistaffCounterpart of Simon rather than Theodore with respect to [[FoolishSiblingResponsibleSibling her relationship with Brittany]].
* TheConscience: Eleanor is quite strong-willed and is far more likely than the timid Jeanette to stand up to her sister Brittany when she feels that she is wrong.
* CostumesChangeYourSize: She seems to slim down whenever she wears anything besides her usual outfit.
* DamselInDistress: Near the end of ''Meet the Wolfman''.
* DeadpanSnarker: To Brittany; mostly in the 2015 series.
* GirlishPigtails: Has pigtails and is the youngest of the sisters.
* GirlinessUpgrade: In the 80s series, she was a bit of a GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak but in the CGI films, she’s a full blown girly girl and is more interested in fashion than previous incarnations of the character.
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: She is a girly girl in school uniform-like clothes but can be a soccer player.
* NiceGirl: Is very maternal and able to be a comforting hand to the others, especially [[NiceGuy Theodore]].
* TheOneWhoWearsShoes: Her [=CGI=] self in ''The Squeakquel'' is insisted by Ian she has to be taller when onstage, [[spoiler: though once the Chipettes realize Ian was EvilAllAlong, Eleanor takes off the shoes and throws them at his face.]]
* PassionateSportsGirl: In the animated series, she's really good at soccer. The episode ''Soccer to Me'' has her prove to Alvin she can make the team even if she's a girl.
* PuppyLove: With Theodore.
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler: In ''The Chipmunk Adventure'', if she hadn't made the decision to convince her sisters to take the baby penguin back to his family in Antarctica, they wouldn't have run off course and attracted the attention of the villains, and in turn might never have found out about the diamonds and the true motive behind the race.]]
* StoutStrength: A slight variation on this trope as well as one of the few female examples. Despite her physique, she's revealed to be very athletic and was able to beat ''Alvin'' in a one-on-one soccer match.
* SupremeChef: Like Theodore, she loves food and is interested in cooking.
* TenderTomboyishnessFoulFemininity: She's a nice and caring PassionateSportsGirl while her sister, Brittany, is a vain and self-centered fashionista.
