!Pokémon Trainers

!!Ash Red Ketchum
An up-incoming trainer from Pallet Town.

----

* AdaptationalBadass: He's far more competent and intelligent than his anime version. Aside from Team Rocket Admins, he rarely loses a match. It took until just before Celadon City for him to lose against a peer and he didn't lose any Gym battles until Koga.
* AdaptationalPersonalityChange: He's notably more serious here, lacking his anime counterpart's comedic aspects.
* AgeLift: Downplayed, but Ash is 11 as opposed to remaining ten years old at the start of his journey.
* CompositeCharacter: He's a mix between Ash from the anime and Red from the games. His personality is a combination of the two, and his name is Ash Red Ketchum.
* FriendlyRivalry: He has this with Gary and Paul, as they openly respect and help each other out when needed while still seeking to one-up each other as trainers.
* ItsPersonal: He's got a major grudge against team Rocket not just for their criminal actions, but for targeting him and those close to him out of spite.
* WorthyOpponent: He's seen as this by his fellow trainers, including Gary and Paul.

!!Gary Oak
The grandson of Professor Oak and Ash's childhood friend and rival.

----

* AdaptationalNiceGuy: He's more respectful with Ash and frequently teams up with him to take on Team Rocket, contrasting his anime version who was mostly just a smug jerk to him.
* BadassFamily: He comes from one when you remember that his grandfather was the champion of Kanto in his youth.
* ChildhoodFriends: He and Ash have been close friends since they were toddlers, often causing mischief with the local Pallet town citizens, much to Delilah and Oak's dismay.
* TheRival: Of the FriendlyRivalry sort towards Ash. He's also got this with Paul too.

!!Paul Blackstone
A trainer from the Sinnoh region. He becomes one of Ash's rivals along his journey.

----

* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: He shows up during Ash's Kanto journey rather than his Sinnoh journey. This applies to all his Pokémon as well.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: While still a bit of a jerk, he's nowhere near as much of an arrogant asshole as he was in the anime. His rivalry with Ash is more friendly and he's shown an open respect for his prowess as a trainer. He even plays a more active role in stopping the bad guys here. Lastly, he also lacks the abusive attitude he had towards his team in canon and doesn't just toss them away when they fail him.
* BadassInDistress: He gets captured by Team Rocket while traveling through Mt. Moon and was rescued by Ash.
* IWorkAlone: He gives off this impression. He travels and trains his Pokémon by himself and scoffs at Ash when he mentions that he has a few traveling companions.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's rather arrogant, looks down on "weak" trainers, and tends to be pretty smug, but he's good friends with Ash and Gary and has shown a strong comradery with his fellow trainers.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: He's given the last name Blackstone where in the anime, his last name was unknown.
* TheRival: Toward Ash, as he considers him one of the few trainers worth his time and treats him with more on-screen respect than most others.
* TheStoic: He's rather aloof and stone-faced for a ten year old, something that Ash makes note of when they first encounter.

!!Leaf Verdant
One of the trainers who graduated Professor Oak's class alongside Ash and Gary.

----

* OCStandIn: She's based off the female avatar from the first generation games.

!!Silver
The son of Giovanni and a new Pokémon trainer.

----

* AdaptationalHeroism: Unlike his game counterpart, he doesn't start out antagonistic and doesn't steal his first Pokémon like he did in Gold and Silver.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: He doesn't display the rude qualities the original Silver displayed (at least prior to CharacterDevelopment) and is more of a CheerfulChild.
* NaiveNewcomer: He's completely new to being a trainer and has just recently gotten his first Pokémon while the others have been training their Pokémon for some time and almost have fully evolved teams.

!Trainer's Pokémon

!!Pyro (Charmander, Charmeleon, then Charizard)
Ash's first Pokémon given to him by Professor Oak. A Charmander who has fully evolved into Charizard.
----
* TheAce: He's Ash's most powerful Pokémon overall, being highly effective in multiple areas with a ton of raw power and battle experience.
* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: He's Ash's first Pokémon, so he first appears at the beginning of his journey rather than after his first few gym badges.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: He never disobeys Ash like his anime version does, despite maintaining his smug and arrogant attitude.
* Flight: After becoming a Charizard, he uses his wings to fly around the battlefield.
* FlyingFirepower: After fully evolving into Charizard, he becomes this since he has high-speed flight and fire attacks.
* PlayingWithFire: He's a fire type, so this goes without saying.
* SmugSuper: He's Ash's first and strongest Pokémon, and he sure ain't humble about that.

!!Pikachu (Pichu then Pikachu)
One of Ash's first Pokémon. He found him eating the electricity from Pr. Oak's lab equipment.

----

* AdaptationalBadass: He learns his most powerful move, Volt Tackle, as early as the Kanto region rather than during the Hoenn region.
* AdaptationalNiceGuy: He doesn't go through his initial bout of disloyalty and rudeness that he did when he first became Ash's partner, though early on, he does enjoy using his electricity to shock Ash for fun.
* AgeLift: Ash meets him as a Pichu rather than as a Pikachu here.
* TheBusCameBack: As of chapter 13, he's fully recovered and back on Ash's team.
* FragileSpeedster: While one of Ash's physically weaker Pokémon, he's also one of his fastest.
* PutOnTheBus: After his severe injuries at the Game Corner base, he's sent to Lt. Surge for rehabilitation and recovery.
* ShockAndAwe: He's got a good deal of electrical attacks.
* TakingTheBullet: Pikachu does this during the

!!Sobek (Sandile, Krokorok, then Krookodile)
A Sandile given to Ash by Giovanni, the gym leader of the Viridian City gym. He has fully evolved into Krookodile.

----

* AdaptationalEarlyAppearance: Ash gets him in the Kanto region rather than the Unova region.
* TheBerserker: His "Moxie" ability allows him to get stronger whenever he defeats an opponent, but it also makes him more aggressive and irrational.
* TheBigGuy: His large size combined with his "Moxie" ability makes him the strongest of Ash's team in physical terms.
* DishingOutDirt: As a ground type, he can use these abilities and moves such as Earth Power and his unique Ant Lion (Sand Tomb and Dig) combo.
* PlayingWithFire: His Fire Fang and Incinerate attacks allow him to use these abilities, though they aren't as strong as Pyro's.

!!Espeon (Eevee then Espeon)
An Eevee born in a Pokémon Mill. She was originally supposed to be given to Bill by Officer Jenny, but after some coaxing, they agreed that she would be best in Ash's hands. She has evolved into Espeon.

----

* ActionGirl: She's one of Ash's strongest Pokémon and definitely not a gal you want to mess with.
* AloofAlly: She starts out as this before she fully transitions to being an active member of Ash's team.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: She was born in a Pokémon Mill, which breeds powerful Pokémon and then sells them on the Black Market, where she was beaten and starved on a routine basis.
* DefrostingTheIceQueen: She starts out completely unwilling to listen to or trust anyone, but her travels with Ash have gradually warmed her and she now willfully helps Ash and his team.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She's very aloof and arrogant, but she's thrown her lot in with Ash and will protect her trainer no matter what.
* MindOverMatter: After evolving, she develops these abilities through moves like Psychic.
* NotQuiteFlight: Using Psychic, she can levitate and maneuver in the air.
* SuperSpeed: Via Quick Attack, she can move fast on the battlefield.
* Telepathy: After evolving into Espeon, she develops these abilities and can use them to communicate with Ash, but he doesn't know this yet.
* TookALevelInKindness: She starts out aggressive and aloof, refusing to trust anyone. Her time with Ash and his Pokémon has allowed her to grow and become a kinder, but still aloof ally.

!!Douse (Poliwag, Poliwirl, then Poliwrath)

----

* AnIcePerson: He knows Ice Beam, allowing him to freeze his enemies.
* MakingASplash: Thanks to his water-type moves and abilities.

!!Spectre (Duskull, then Dusclops)

----

* CastingAShadow: He knows moves like Shadow Ball, Dark Pulse, Shadow Punch, and Shadow Sneak.
* DarkIsNotEvil: He's a ghost-type, but he's one of Ash's teammates and a good friend to hang out with.
* HealingFactor: A useful ability of his is that he can heal himself by going into his shadows.
* Intangibility: As a ghost type, he can phase through walls with ease, which is useful for discovering secrets like a hidden Team Rocket base.

!!Jasmine (Dratini)

----
* ShyBlueHairedGirl: Although a different species, her shy personality and blue scales makes her qualify for this.
!!Scizor

----

!!Blastoise (Squirtle, Wartortle, then Blastoise)
Gary's first Pokémon. He has fully evolved into Blastoise.

----

* MakingASplash: As a final evolution water type of Squirtle, he can fire powerful bursts of water from his cannons.

!!Pidgeot (Pidgey, Pidgeotto, then Pidgeot)

!!Kadabra (Abra then Kadabra)

!!Graveler (Geodude then Graveler)

!!Machop

Paul's starter Pokémon. He started as a Turtwig, but has since evolved into Torterra.
----

!!Electabuzz (Elekid then Electabuzz)
Paul's signature electric type.
----
* ShockAndAwe: Comes with being an electric type. He knows some powerful abilities like Thunder Wave, Discharge, and Thunderbolt.

!!Nidoking (Nidoran, Nidorino, then Nidoking)

!!Tentacruel

!!Porygon

!!Chimchar
A Sinnoh starter given to Paul by Cynthia.

----

* AdaptationalAngstUpgrade: Inverted. He was given to Paul by Cynthia rather than having been found by him after suffering from a traumatizing attack from a group of wild Zangoose. Combined with Paul being nicer, it's unlikely that he will have it rough here.
* AdaptationalBadass: As early as his Chimchar days, he's shown prowess as a combat prodigy. Paul notes that he actively looks for and attacks weak points even without his input.
* AdaptationalWimp: In regards to his Blaze ability at least. In the anime, it turned him into an all-out Glass Nuke and made him an unstoppable force of nature even during his Chimchar days. Here, it's noted that his Blaze ability is about on par with any standard Chimchar.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: He's the youngest Pokémon of Paul's team, while the rest are almost or already fully evolved.
* CombatPragmatist: He actively seeks to exploit enemy weak points, and unlike most Pokémon, he doesn't need his trainer's input to do so.
* Determinator: Chimchar's most defining characteristic is that he never gives up. Even when exhausted, he keeps pushing forward through sheer force of will.
* PlayingWithFire: Naturally possesses Fire-type moves such as Ember and flame Wheel.

!!Empoleon
A water Pokémon that Paul caught at the Cerulean water catching contest known simply as "The King".

----

* TheAce: In the water competition, she's known for being the most impossible to catch and is incredibly powerful even without any prior training.
* MakingASplash: As a final evolved water-type, she specializes in water attacks.
* SheIsTheKing: She's referred to as "The King" despite being female. Probably justified by no one being able to identify her and her gender.

!!Saur (Bulbasaur, Inysaur, then Venasaur)
----

!!Rose (Ponyta)
----
* PlayingWithFire: She's a fire type and knows a few fire attacks like Flame Charge and Incinerate.

!!Bomber

!!Teddiursa

!!Seadra
