Character sheet for the Port Mafia of ''Manga/BungoStrayDogs''. Characters on this page all have their names listed in Western order-- given names followed by surnames.

The Port Mafia (ポート・マフィア ''or'' 港區黑幫) is [[ExactlyWhatItSaysOnTheTin a criminal organization that controls the Yokohama ports]]. Their primary business is smuggling, but they also wield a lot of political influence in the city. Their unique skill of strength in the dark - in both the literal and figural sense and their cold-hearted reputation has earned them their name 'Wardens of the Night'. Their head is Ougai Mori.

[[folder:In General]]
* AndThenJohnWasAZombie: [[spoiler:After cutting him down, Fukuchi has Bram Stoker revive Akutagawa as a vampire in his service. Akutagawa in turn proceeds to turn Higuchi, who then turns Gin and Hirotsu, as well as a good chunk of {{mook}}s. Tachihara is likewise turned by Bram after failing to kill Fukuchi during their confrontation, while Chuuya is turned and forced to help free Fyodor from prison.]]
* AntiHero:
** When not being cast as the antagonists against the ADA, the Port Mafia tend to serve this role, being blatant gang members that participate in horrible crimes, but still end up facing people even ''worse''. Akutagawa and Higuchi end up the most prominent due to frequently interacting with the Armed Detective Agency, with Chuuya, Koyo, and the Black Lizards to a lesser extent.
** Most notable with the flashback arcs from when Dazai was still part of the group, the lead characters being Odasaku and Chuuya, the former being the nicest member of the Port Mafia as a whole, and the latter being heavily humanized while exploring his backstory. In contrast, the antagonists of those arcs are cast in a much darker light, the former's antagonist being Gide, who wantonly murders to force Odasaku into having a reason to [[DeathSeeker kill him]], and the latter's antagonist is [[spoiler:Rando]], who forced Chuuya to work with the Port Mafia to put him in a position where he could kill him and [[spoiler:claim Arahabaki.]]
* ArchEnemy: Not always, but they frequently have arguments with the Agency, who don't appreciate their crimes. Lampshaded by Tanizaki after the [[spoiler:conclusion of the Cannibalism arc]].
--> Director's orders were: 'Don't fight the mafia'. And what's the first thing we do? '''Fight the mafia'''.
* BadPowersBadPeople: Unlike the Armed Detective Agency and the Guild, whose members' abilities skew more towards defense or utility, almost all of the Port Mafia's abilities are offensive abilities suited for combat.
* DamnItFeelsGoodToBeAGangster: They draw a lot of influence from [[TheRoaringTwenties Roaring '20s]] gangsters and they're generally depicted in a very EvilIsCool light.
* EmptyEyes: Many of the members of the Port Mafia have these in the manga. [[WordOfGod The artist]] says that they [[http://bato.to/reader#d5ee1f142cbaf2bc_4 tend to draw bigger pupils on the more "tainted" characters]]. Thus, characters like Kajii, Akutagawa, and Mori all have dead-looking eyes.
* EnemyMine: Despite their animosity, the Port Mafia is willing to call temporary alliances with both the Armed Detective Agency and the Government if it best serves their interests.
* {{Leitmotif}}: 'Good For Nothing' tends to play whenever the members of the Port Mafia are up to no good, such as when Higuchi first fires on Atsushi and Junichiro in the alleyway, when Kajii bombs the train, and again when Kajii blows up The Zelda.
* TheGoodTheBadAndTheEvil: They always play the "bad" to the ADA's "good", with the evil tending to be whatever group is the biggest threat to Yokohama at the time.
* ALighterShadeOfBlack:
** The Port Mafia is a crime group that gladly takes part in actions like murder, trafficking, drug trade, etc., but more often than not they tend to be placed in this position when an even ''worse'' group shows up and threatens Yokohama. Several members such as Chuuya, Higuchi, Koyo, Tachihara, and Gin can even be considered {{anti hero}}es with the level of sympathy they are given despite their acts.
** This also applies for the organization itself under different bosses. Under the previous boss, the Port Mafia was a lot more destructive and cared little for anything but causing bloodshed. After Mori killed him however, the Port Mafia became much more {{pragmatic|Villainy}} in their approach, and work just as hard as the Armed Detective Agency when it comes to protecting Yokohama, if only so they can still have a place to do business.
* ManOfWealthAndTaste: The higher-ups and most of the members are as sharply dressed as they are well-off.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Most Executives save for Chuuya tend to have purple-colored powers.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: The higher-up a member is, the more powerful they seem to be.
* VillainousValour: They may be criminals, but they'll rush to help defend Yokohama if it's in danger, like when Fitzgerald is planning to level it.

The boss of Port Mafia. His ability is "Vita Sexualis".
-----
* AffablyEvil: Even as the leader of the Port Mafia, he acts like a gentleman, being polite to allies and enemies alike.
* BadassLongcoat: He wears a black trench coat, which looks cool in a fearsome mafia boss.
* BenevolentBoss: His subordinates hold him in high regard. (Dazai, notably, does not.)
* BigBadEnsemble: One of the top contenders for the title of BigBad.
* BitchInSheepsClothing:
** Combine this with ObfuscatingStupidity and ComedicLolicon, Mori treats girls under twelve years old very well, especially to Elise, and his fair share of funny moments with her says it all for the comedic side of things.
** On the bad side during the Great War, he used the 11-year old Yosano for her healing ability to form his ideal army of ''immortal'' soldiers, and outcome didn't end well with her reluctance to heal them. To make matters worse, Yosano, as an healing Ability user, was the only young girl to be treated differently by Mori.
--> '''Mori:''' I see. You want to free him from his obligations on the battlefield as a soldier. Quite the conundrum. As your superior officer, I'm obliged to dole out your orders, but for some reason, I have a hard time saying "no" to a young girl's wishes. [[ManipulativeBastard Not your wishes though. Do it.]]
* TheChainsOfCommanding: Mori makes it clear to many that he is the Organization's King and greatest servant, and he must work hard to ensure the success of the Mafia.
* TheChessmaster: He orchestrated the conflict between Mimic, the Mafia, and the government by letting the terrorists into the country, then informed Gide of Oda's weakness so that Oda would attack Mimic, being the only one who could counter Gide's power. And in exchange for getting rid of Mimic, the government allowed the Mafia to operate legally.
* CombatPragmatist: In the Cannibalism arc, he wins his fight against Fukuzawa by reminding him that if Port Mafia loses its leader, the organization would unleash chaos on the city, which makes Fukuzawa hesitate enough for Mori to stab him in the throat.
* ComedicLolicon: He openly admits he only likes girls under twelve. Luckily, the most we ever see him do is pamper Elise, and his constant fawning over her is PlayedForLaughs.
* CrazyJealousGuy: Back when Yosano was 11, Mori would hold men ''at gunpoint'' if they tried to get close to "his" Yosano.
* DeadlyDoctor: As a former doctor, he's more than capable of using his knowledge to hurt others.
* TheDon: Fulfills this role for the mafia, and is a textbook example of one.
* TheDreaded: His aura of malice can stop Lucy and her demonic doll dead in their tracks.
* EmptyEyes: Befitting of a mafia boss, his eyes are almost always completely dark and devoid of light.
* EvilCounterpart: To Fukuzawa, being the leader of his respective faction, well-respected and coming from a mundane background.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Occasionally dips into this. The best example was when he sent a letter to the Guild's base asking them if they were in good health... before announcing that he had sent assassins to kill them all.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: When intimidating Lucy, he's still in his 'innocent' form, but does already sport a purple aura, not to dissimilar from those Ability users have. Later episodes confirm the color of his power [[PurpleIsPowerful to be purple as well]].
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Was formerly just a medical doctor before he became the leader of the Port Mafia. He got this by murdering his predecessor.
* GoneHorriblyWrong: He unleashes Q to use him as the strongest card of Port Mafia to use against the Armed Detective Agency and The Guild. What ends up happening? The Guild captures Q and they make many citizens insane by using Q's ability. Port Mafia suffers a lot of casualties during the resulting disaster.
* ImaginationBasedSuperpower: Vita Sexualis changes his GuardianEntity Elise's appearance, personality, and capacities according to whatever Mori desires at the moment. If Mori wishes it, he can change Elise's form and give her superpowers like {{Flight}}, SuperStrength, and SuperSpeed.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: When Fukuzawa suggests the two of them settle their scores with a fight, Fukuzawa goes at Mori with his sword. Mori pulls out... a medical scalpel.
* KarmaHoudini: For some reason, he's able to do anything and everything as long as it protects Yokohama, and he keeps getting away with it.
* KillingIntent: He can emit an extremely powerful aura of malice. It's enough to paralyze Lucy Montgomery in her tracks.
* KlingonPromotion: How he became the boss of the Port Mafia. He killed his predecessor after deeming him unfit to rule and had covered it up as death by illness with the former boss choosing Mori as the next boss.
* LabcoatOfScienceAndMedicine: Wears one during his civilian disguise as "Rintarou", a harmless retired physician.
* ManipulativeBastard: Very rarely fights himself, preferring to convince others to do it instead. Best shown when he gives a rousing speech to Atsushi so he will defeat Lucy for him. The most infamous example is during the Great War with Yosano, where he exploited her healing ability to maintain the lives of the soldiers to the point they suffer from a FateWorseThanDeath, let alone they can't leave the war with her valuable presence.
* MirrorCharacter: Fukuzawa, the leader of the Armed Detective Agency, and Mori, one of the leaders of the Port Mafia, are benevolent leaders of opposing organizations that care for their subordinates and inspire their loyalty. Their organizations, while very different and with very different priorities, are required as equal matches to balance each other out and bring balance to Yokohama.
* MorallyAmbiguousDoctorate: Before he took over Port Mafia, he ran an underground clinic that served as neutral ground for all in the criminal world and he got illegal information out of his patients in exchange for medical treatment.
* MurderIsTheBestSolution: What's his first solution to the three-way conflict of the Port Mafia with the Armed Detective Agency and The Guild? Kill the leader of the Agency and then go on to kill as many members of The Guild as he can.
* NightmareFace: The awful sight of Mori's creepy and unsettling smile once he found Yosano in a detention facility, so he can recruit her once again... until he was interrupted by Fukuzawa.
* ObfuscatingStupidity: Initially appears to be a clumsy and worried man. He reveals himself to be competent in an emergency and capable of scaring the piss out of his enemies.
* PragmaticVillainy: He feels disgusted at some South American illegal immigrants destroying a truck full of medical drugs because he could have sold them at high prices in the black market.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: He dresses in a black suit with black boots and a dark red scarf he leaves hanging over his shoulders.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: They're candy red. They are also a sign that that InnocentBystander is not so innocent.
* RejectionAffection: He rejoices whenever Elise disobeys him because he wants her to act like that and got off on an eleven-year-old Yosano talking back to him.
* TheUnfettered: Mori does anything he deems necessary to achieve his goals, not caring at all of how inhumane his methods can be.
* VillainousCrush: He was very attracted to Yosano when she was eleven, even claiming she belonged to him, to her great dismay. The feeling has probably vanished now that Yosano is an adult since Mori is only into [[ComedicLolicon girls under twelve]].

!!Tropes pertaining to Elise:

Elise is a young girl under the care of Ougai Mori, whom she calls "Rintarou."
-----
* TheAgeless: Her physical appearance never changes because of Mori's creepy obsession with little girls.
* BadassAdorable: In battle, Mori summons her in a cute nurse dress and has her fight with syringes as her weapons.
* ElegantGothicLolita: On the [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/bungostraydogs/images/3/3b/Chapter_46.gif/revision/latest?cb=20161210190944 cover of chapter 46]].
* EmotionlessGirl: Flashbacks show Elise used to be devoid of emotions and utterly obedient of Mori in contrast with her highly expressive personality in the present. This is because Mori equipped Elise with the defiant attitude he liked so much in Yosano.
* EveryoneLovesBlondes: She's a very cute little girl with blonde hair, with Mori even comparing her to an angel.
* GirlWithPsychoWeapon: When Mori summons her for battle, Elise wields a gigantic murder syringe.
* GuardianEntity: Her true nature as the manifestation of Mori's ability, Vita Sexualis. However, unlike other Guardian Entity abilities, she has full autonomy when not being given orders by Mori.
* HellishPupils: Displays reptilian eyes after [[spoiler:Mori is stabbed by Fyodor.]]
* HistoricalInJoke: She calls Mori "Rintarou," which was the writer Ougai Mori's birth name.
* InvoluntaryShapeshifting: Mori has control over the details about her appearance and fighting abilities. She's expressed annoyance with this.
* LittleMissBadass: Mori can alter Elise to make her combat capable and fight for him.
* LustObject: Literally. Elise is the manifestation of Mori's Vita Sexualis, which gives a physical form to his desires. Because Mori is a self-admitted pedophile, Elise has the appearance of an adorable little girl and he never stops fawning over her cuteness. Fortunately, he never does anything disturbing or sexual to her (at least on-screen) and limits himself to overindulging her.
* MafiaPrincess: Mori leads the Port Mafia and since she's the physical embodiment of his ability, she considers the mafia as a whole to be her family. Most of Mori's money is spent on buying desserts and cute dresses for Elise.
* PowersDoTheFighting: Mori has Elise fight for him in direct combat, although he's far from defenseless himself.
* ShoutOut: She's named after the heroine in the short story "The Dancing Girl" by Ougai Mori. Her blonde hair and blue eyes are also directly from the character she is based on.
* SpoiledBrat: Mori satisfies all her whims and lets her do whatever she wants because she's cute. Actually, Elise acts this way because Mori loves it when she's being disobedient since that was how Yosano behaved with him when she was younger.
* SweetTooth: Loves desserts.
* TokenMiniMoe: A little girl among a mafia made of much older people. Given the reveal that Elise is a manifestation of Mori's ability and Mori's admitted preference for underage girls, it isn't surprising that Mori makes Elise look like that.
* TroublingUnchildlikeBehavior: She seems perfectly okay with other people discussing murder right in front of her. She doesn't even flinch when she and Mori stumble across a dead body. Then again, she's not actually a human child, but a physical manifestation of Mori's ability.
* WalkingSpoiler: If we went into further detail about her and explain why her personalia are like that, we'd reveal that she's not human at all.

A Port Mafia executive, able to summon a sword-wielding phantom with her ability, "Golden Demon."
-----
* AntiVillain: Even when playing an antagonistic role, she's given her fair share of sympathetic moments, namely being that she is ultimately trying to protect Kyoka from suffering what she went through, but is going about it the wrong way.
* BadassLongcoat: Her haori extends past her kimono's hem, making it this.
* CoolBigSis: Appears to have been this to Chuuya and Dazai.
* DarkActionGirl: Strong enough to take down Atsushi.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: As twisted as her ways to get Kyoka back to the mafia are, Kouyou really does care deeply about Kyoka like she was her daughter or little sister. She even comes to trust Atsushi with her safety after realizing the ADA is where Kyoka belongs.
* EvilRedhead: One of the strongest members of Port Mafia and also a redhead.
* ExcessiveEvilEyeshadow: She wears very prominent dark pink eyeshadow and she presented a great threat to the members of the Agency who came across her.
* FirstNameBasis: Similar to Chuuya, she's known almost exclusively by her first name.
* GenderBlenderName: She's named after a male author.
* GuardianEntity: Her ability, Golden Demon. It's similar to Kyouka's Demon Snow, except that Kouyou can control Golden Demon better.
* HairColorDissonance: Depending on the scene and lighting, her hair is pink, orange, or red.
* HeartbrokenBadass: Kouyou is a deadly swordfighter with a powerful Ability. She's also still grieving a man dear to her who was killed while attempting to run away from Port Mafia with her.
* HistoricalInJoke: Before Kyoka joined the Agency, Kouyou acted as her guardian and mentor, and the two have similar abilities. Similarly, the author Kouyou Ozaki acted as a mentor to the author Kyouka Izumi, who carried on his mentor's style.
* KickingAssInAllHerFinery: She doesn't even tarnish her fancy kimono when taking out enemies with some help from Golden Demon, but is also more than capable of kicking your ass with her own skills.
* KimonoIsTraditional: Everything about her design and mannerisms evokes traditional Japanese upper-class aesthetics.
* LadyOfWar: Wears a kimono, is never seen without a {{parasol|OfPain}}, and can kick your ass.
* LikeBrotherAndSister: She and Nakahara Chuuya became this. The latter was under the tutelage of the former and is notably the only one to address her as 'ane-san', a Japanese honorific specific to an older, mature sister figure (in contrast to 'onee-chan'). Note that Mori, her superior, simply calls her 'Kouyou-kun'.
* LoveHurts: Tried to run away from the Port Mafia with her "gentleman friend" when she was Kyouka's age, but they ended up getting caught, and her friend was executed by order of the previous boss. As such...
* LoveIsAWeakness: "Love" is listed as one of her dislikes.
* MakeUpIsEvil: She's possibly the most dangerous woman of Port Mafia and she wears heavy makeup.
* MamaBear: She's very protective of Kyouka, caring for her as if she was her child, and she won't forgive anyone who might hurt her by "showing her the light". In ''Storm Bringer'' it appears this mindset extends towards Chuuya as well, given how she voices her dislike of Verlaine's treatment of her subordinate while attacking.
* OhCrap: When the standoff between her and the Agency gets interrupted by the Guild.
* ParasolOfPain: She carries a red Japanese umbrella which she uses as the scabbard of her sword.
* PlayAlongPrisoner: Is shown to be perfectly capable of escaping captivity after her initial capture by the Agency, but sticks around anyway because Dazai promised her that he'd rescue Kyoka if Kouyou stayed out of the fight.
* PowersDoTheFighting: Occasionally with Golden Demon, though Kouyou is also perfectly capable of fighting with her sword.
* PrimAndProperBun: She has her hair tied into a traditional Japanese bun.
* PsychologicalProjection: Kouyou tries to take Kyoka back to Port Mafia against her will, telling her a talented assassin with an Ability made for killing isn't meant to live in the light, otherwise she will only suffer and come to regret it. Evidently, Kouyou is talking more about herself than Kyoka since when she was Kyoka's age, Kouyou also tried to leave Port Mafia with a man she deeply cared about, but they were caught and the man was killed. Thanks to Dazai, Kouyou is convinced that things are different in Kyoka's case enough for her to not experience the same tragedy.
* SilkHidingSteel: A rare villainous example. Kouyou is a very elegant and seemingly demure woman and loses none of her cool while fighting.
* SingleTear: She sheds one when she thinks Kyoka is being manipulated and used by the Armed Detective Agency.
* SwordPlant: Does this with her SwordCane sometimes, especially when she's summoning Golden Demon.
* YoungerThanSheLooks: Despite looking like one of the older members of the mafia, Kouyou is only 26 years old. This is in high contrast to Ranpo, who is also 26 but is OlderThanTheyLook.

A Port Mafia executive. His name is pronounced "Ace". His ability, "The Madness of the Jewel King", allows him to convert the lifespan of his subordinates into jewels of the same value.
-----
* AssholeVictim: Fyodor manipulates him into his own suicide. Given his SmugSnake personality and cruel treatment of his subordinates, nobody feels sorry for him, [[TheFriendNobodyLikes especially not in the mafia]].
* BadBoss: His violent temper aside, he puts {{Slave Collar}}s on his underlings that give him the power to kill them and transform their lifespan into jewels. And he's willing to do a demonstration just to make a point.
* BadPowersBadPeople: See BadBoss above. It's hard to imagine how anyone could use that Ability for good.
* BerserkButton: Not having control over people or things makes him fly into a rage, even resorting to violence with no warning signs.
* BigBadWannabe: He plans on overthrowing Mori someday. He compiles a list of all the Port Mafia members' abilities in preparation for this. His first step is attempting to control Fyodor. Ace dug his own grave with this huge mistake.
* CaptainErsatz: His ability name may indicate he's one for Creator/AlanBennett.
* CastFromLifespan: He can create jewels from his subordinates' lifespans.
* ControlFreak: Ace firmly believes he can buy his way through everything and use the lives of his subordinates to do with as he pleases, essentially enslaving them under the threat of death so they have no choice but to obey his every order. And he will use any means necessary, from intimidation and mind games to physical violence, to ensure someone join him if he wants them to. The moment things don't go his way, he loses it.
* EntertaininglyWrong: Ace was told by the bounty hunter he hired to capture Fyodor that the latter possessed an ability allowing him to trap people within his own mind. Later on, he listened in on a conversation during which Fyodor said that his ability allowed him to control time and space. Following their card game, Ace fails to call his men or use his key to leave the room, and points out that the clock hasn't moved since he came in. Naturally, he immediately assumes that the two of them are trapped inside Fyodor's mind space and that the only way out is by [[DreamEmergencyExit dying inside the illusion]]. Unfortunately, this was all a set-up by Fyodor, and they were very much in the physical world.
* FashionableAsymmetry: His hair is shorter on the left side, and he parts it in such a way as to let his bangs cover his right eye.
* FauxAffablyEvil: He gives off the impression of being gentlemanly and acts courteous when negotiating with Fyodor to work for him. He might also be the most amoral and despicable member of the Port Mafia seen so far.
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: His fellow Executive Kouyou, in particular, seems to despise him.
* HidingBehindYourBangs: His bangs conceal his right eye, showcasing his scheming and deceptive nature.
* HighClassGloves: He wears white gloves with his elegant suit.
* IControlMyMinionsThrough: He makes sure none of his subordinates defy him by literally having a hold over their lifespan so they obey him unless they want to die.
* MoodSwinger: Ace's demeanor swiftly transitions from ([[FauxAffablyEvil feigned]]) charming and polite to violently enraged, and he's just as quick to calm back down.
* {{Narcissist}}: Let's see. Megalomania and feelings of superiority? Check. Self-centeredness and lack of consideration for others? Check. Justifying his heinous actions as being logical or even benevolent? Check. Lashing out at anyone who dares oppose him? ''Double check.'' Insatiable lust for power? Guys, I think we have a winner here!
* NonActionGuy: As Kouyou puts it, he views the other executives as his own personal bodyguards and was the first to hide during the war against the Guild. His real strength lies in his financial power.
* OddNameOut: Unlike virtually every other character in the series, Ace does not seem to be based on any author or their works. As such, the effect beams of his Ability do not show any kanji or words in them.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Asagiri has mentioned on Twitter that "Ace" is a nickname he got from his days as a gambler. His real name remains unknown.
* PassiveAggressiveKombat: When he asks Mori to let him handle the captured Fyodor, Kouyou makes a quip about Ace being the first Executive to hide during the Guild war. Ace merely [[StepfordSmiler smiles politely]] and retorts that this makes him more qualified than being the first Executive to be captured.
* PersonalityPowers: Being able to exchange your subordinates' lifespan for gems, but only after fitting them with a SlaveCollar, is fitting for a [[ManipulativeBastard manipulative]] ControlFreak who views everyone around him as tools and who bought his way up to the top of the Port Mafia.
* PlayingCardMotifs:
** A ProfessionalGambler who goes by the name of "Ace" as a reference to his talent.
** He also calls himself a "king" while holding the King of Spades card, which is a symbol of authority, logic and discipline, but also of dishonesty, controlling behavior and judgmental attitude.
* ProfessionalGambler: His experience at Port Mafia's casinos has made him an expert in gambling games.
* SmugSnake: Frequently thinks he's figured it out and will let it show.
* SoreLoser: Following his complete defeat at high card low card, Ace ''loses it'' and tries ordering his men to [[DisproportionateRetribution cut off Fyodor's limbs]], breaking his promise that he'd let the man go free if he won.
* TheStarscream: He plots to usurp Mori's position and take control over Port Mafia. However, he never got the chance because he was overconfident enough to think he could keep [[ManipulativeBastard Fyodor]] under his thumb.
* StepfordSmiler: For all of Ace's formal demeanor, his polite expressions are rarely genuine.
* StrongerThanTheyLook: He's quite nimbly built, but he's strong enough to [[GrievousBottleyHarm break a wine bottle over Fyodor's head]].
* TermsOfEndangerment: He insistingly calls Dostoevsky "Fyodor[[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics -kun]]". It's not meant to be affectionate.
* TokenEvilTeammate: Compared to the other members of Port Mafia, he has absolutely no sympathetic or NobleDemon qualities.
* TranquilFury: Zig-zagged. When Fyodor declares that he will kill him, Ace's initial reaction is to angrily break a wine bottle over his head, before calmly saying that he's "a bit disappointed".
* TrickedToDeath: [[spoiler:Commits suicide, believing that Fyodor's mind-altering ability will be [[DreamEmergencyExit negated by dying inside the illusion]]. Too bad mind-alteration isn't Fyodor's ability at all.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: He gradually loses his cool as it becomes clear Fyodor is the one in charge of the situation and drives him into a corner with his mind games.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: [[spoiler:He dies in the same chapter he's introduced.]]
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: He has white hair and is quite the SmugSnake.
* TheWorfEffect: What little we see of Ace shows that he possesses an impressive intellect, likely of genius level. Unfortunately, his opponent was [[TheChessmaster Fyodor]].

A master assassin and former partner of Rimbaud, currently operating as a Port Mafia Executive. His Ability allows him to control Gravity. The true form of his power, "Corruption," allows him to manipulate gravity with far more destructive potential, though he has no control over it.
----
* ArcVillain: He's the major source of conflict in ''Storm Bringer''.
* ArtificialHuman: Verlaine is the product of a group experimenting with creating Singularities, and was created through man-made means.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: [[spoiler:He was locked up by the Port Mafia for a long time before he began training new recruits to be assassins, eventually working his way up to becoming an executive]]. [[spoiler:FridgeBrilliance when you realize the timing of this promotion was six years after ''Storm Bringer'', making it likely he took A's vacant spot]].
* BadassInANiceSuit: He's dangerous assassin who dresses ''very'' nicely.
* BasementDweller: [[spoiler:After the events of ''Storm Bringer'', Verlaine is locked up by the Port Mafia. He is later inducted into the organization and trains recruits to be assassins, eventually becoming an executive. However, he continues to stay in the basement, having nowhere to go and no one he wants to see besides Rimbaud, who is gone]].
* BigBrotherBully: He considers Chuuya his younger brother though they aren't blood related. [[spoiler:He puts Chuuya through hell and massacres his friends to force Chuuya to kill N. [[GoneHorriblyWrong This backfires spectacularly]]]].
* TheBerserker: [[spoiler:Verlaine can enter Corruption just as Chuuya can, though he uses a different incantation and there's a second one to return his sanity. On top of that, it's possible for him to be forcibly transformed into a monster known as Guivre the Beast which is completely mindless and almost impossible to kill]].
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: He was [[spoiler:made by an anti-government group and controlled with a series of [[TriggerPhrase trigger phrases]]. Rimbaud eventually figured out there was a special metal powder that could negate the programming and freed him. His hat, which now belongs to Chuuya, has the metal embedded in it to protect him from being controlled]].
* ClonesArePeopleToo: His reasoning for betraying Rimbaud [[spoiler:and releasing Chuuya was because he believed that as a fellow experiment, Chuuya should be free rather than used as a test subject]].
* CloneAngst: He has very intense issues concerning his identity as a clone with a programmed personality, which Rimbaud tried to help him with by [[spoiler:making a special hat to give him control over Corruption]]. Verlaine did not want [[spoiler:Chuuya]] to suffer like this as well, and was responsible for freeing him when Rimbaud refused.
* CoatCape: He wears a long white coat over his shoulders.
* DidNotThinkThisThrough: Verlaine tries murdering everyone Chuuya cares about out of a twisted desire to make him [[spoiler:'human' and force Chuuya to kill his creator, N. However, he does not take into account that Chuuya can't even remember what N did to him, but is presently grieving for the friends Verlaine killed, so when he's given the opportunity to off N, Chuuya instead turns on Verlaine]].
* DisneyDeath: [[spoiler:He survives his defeat as Guivre the Beast and is still alive six years later as a mafia executive]].
* {{Foil}}: He's this to Chuuya. The two were created through experimentation that left them feeling intensely insecure about their identities and humanity but, while Chuuya got better after [[FoundFamily finding family within the Port Mafia]], Verlaine was all alone and without Rimbaud he was driven to madness.
* ForcedTransformation: N [[spoiler:releases the entity, Guivre the Beast, from inside Verlaine, transforming him into massive creature that proceeds to mindlessly destroy everything in sight and only reacts to feelings of hatred]].
* GravityMaster: [[spoiler:Like Chuuya, Verlaine was the product of experiments in creating Singularities without the use of multiple Ability users. This enables him to control gravity the same way Chuuya does]].
* IdentityBreakdown: As a clone with an artificially programmed personality, Verlaine was plagued by the notion that he wasn't a real person, but was kept stable by Rimbaud's support. Unfortunately, he was forced to betray his friend to save a young Chuuya, and without Rimbaud his sanity sharply declined. By ''Storm Bringer'' he completely snaps and obsesses around Chuuya, intent on murdering everyone the boy cares about out of a belief that as a [[spoiler:(possible) fellow clone]] Chuuya is the only one in the world who can understand him.
* IgnoranceIsBliss: Rather than hand [[spoiler:Chuuya]] over to his superiors as Rimbaud wanted, Verlaine thought it would be better to send [[spoiler:the boy]] to live on a farm somewhere so he would never have to learn of what he was.
* {{Kaiju}}: A dying N [[spoiler:releases Guivre the Beast from inside Verlaine out of spite, transforming the assassin into a gigantic, reptilian monster. Guivre proceeds to go on a mindless rampage and attempts to destroy downtown Yokohama in true kaiju fashion, requiring Chuuya to use Corruption for the first time ever to defeat him]].
* LogicalWeakness: Verlaine naturally struggles to counter Abilities that don't adhere to the laws of physics and therefore can't be influenced by gravity, and even though he's ImmuneToBullets like Chuuya, projectiles fired at a fast enough speed can at least harm him slightly. On top of this, as an assassin, Verlaine doesn't have much experience fighting large groups of enemies without the element of surprise, [[spoiler:and therefore has difficulty battling the entire Port Mafia]]. However, the sheer power of Corruption overall negates these weaknesses.
* NamesToRunAwayFrom: He's called the 'King of Assassins'.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: Deconstructed. Knowing Chuuya is a product of [[spoiler:similar experimentation]] and having undergone severe SanitySlippage, Verlaine develops an all-consuming obsession with the boy, believing they are the only people in the world who can understand each other.
* OneManArmy: He can take down immensely powerful Ability users no problem, and while he struggles against the [[spoiler:might of the entire Port Mafia]], he still holds out for a pretty long while before [[spoiler:activating Corruption and annihilating his foes]].
* PhenotypeStereotype: He is a European, presumably French, with blond hair and blue eyes. This serves to confuse Chuuya when Verlaine introduces himself as his older brother- on top of the fact that the boy has no known relatives.
* ProfessionalKiller: Verlaine is an extremely competent hitman known as the 'King of Assassins'. [[spoiler:After joining the Port Mafia, he helped train recruits in assassination, including Kyouka and Gin]].
* SanitySlippage: He had always struggled with his identity [[spoiler:as a clone with man-made powers, though Rimbaud helped him and always assured Verlaine he was a human. When they went to capture Chuuya, he empathized with the boy and wanted to set him free instead of handing him over to his superiors to be used as a lab rat, even fighting Rimbaud over it. However, without Rimbaud, Verlaine's sanity took a hit and he eventually decided to kill everyone Chuuya cared about to force him to kill N and make him 'human'. He gets better]].
* ScaledUp: [[spoiler:N forcibly transforms Verlaine into a gigantic, reptilian monster called Guivre the Beast, referencing a legendary, dragon-like monster from France]].
* SealedInsideAPersonShapedCan: In the same vein as [[spoiler:Chuuya]]. Verlaine has an [[spoiler:entity inside him responsible for his powers known as Guivre the Beast]].
* SelfRestraint: [[spoiler:At the end of ''Storm Bringer'', Verlaine allows himself to be detained by the mafia, having nowhere else to go, and the only person he wants to see being dead. He stays there for many years before eventually using his expertise in assassination to train people such as Kyouka and Gin. At some point six years later, he becomes an executive]].
* WalkingSpoiler: It's hard to mention him without going over the fact that [[spoiler:Chuuya is the product of experimentation and possibly a clone]].
* WeaksauceWeakness: Downplayed. [[spoiler:Like Chuuya, Verlaine was designed to be extremely vulnerable to poison, which is used by Adam in order to defeat him]].
* YouAreNumberSix: He was originally called Black No. 12.

'''First appearance''': Chapter 3/Episode 3]

A feared Mafioso of the Port Mafia who is wanted by the police. He has a history with Dazai. His ability, "Rashomon," turns his coat into a black monster that can rip apart anything, including space. He can also use it to shield himself.
-----
* AnimalMotifs: Dogs, to counteract Atsushi's entire cat/tiger shtick. He's reckless, crazy, and also eager to please (especially if it is about Dazai) and he's loyal to a fault. He gets jealous easily (some dogs growl if another pet gets attention) and his hair can look like floppy dog ears. His constant coughing can be seen as barking, some languages have the word the same. One of his many dog-related nicknames is 'the Rabid Dog of the Mafia' and Rashoumon vaguely looks like a wild dog.
* AntiHero: Of the {{nominal|Hero}} variety. Akutagawa is an unstable murderer whose first instinct when doing a job is to kill someone. He's also extremely desperate for Dazai's approval, and if Dazai asks him to help them or even work with Atsushi, he'll do so. [[spoiler:After he {{t|ookALevelInKindness}}akes a level in kindness, he is much more willing to work with and even [[HeroicSacrifice sacrifice himself]] for Atsushi, even holding to his word of not killing anyone for half a year, placing closer to an UnscrupulousHero.]]
* AxCrazy: Akutagawa is in no way a stable person, calmly murdering people by the dozen. He uses Rashomon to viciously rip his victims apart, making no secret of his murders. Hell, he even attacks Atsushi on a busy street in broad daylight!
* BackFromTheDead: [[spoiler:Shortly after being killed by Fukuchi, he's revived using Bram to turn him into a subservient Vampire.]]
* BadassLongcoat: He wears a long black coat and [[ClothesMakeTheSuperman Rashomon]] makes him very badass.
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: When called out by Atsushi for his dehumanizing of Kyouka, Akutagawa claims that he only helped her find her purpose in life. During his brief fight with Kyouka, he expresses muted but genuine happiness for his former subordinate, whom he realizes has found another purpose in life aside from killing. Considering Akutagawa's upbringing and treatment at Dazai's hands, ToughLove is likely the only way he knows how to express care. Therefore, he was legitimately doing what he thought was best for Kyouka during her time serving under him.
* TheBusCameBack: [[spoiler:After having been absent for 30 chapters, Akutagawa returns just in time to help Atsushi fight Fukuchi.]]
* CastingAShadow: His coat can be controlled by his ability, Rashomon, to give him this effect. His exact Ability is the 'Power to Control Clothing'. [[SemanticSuperpower He's very good at it]].
* ClassyCravat: He wears a white cravat.
* ClothesMakeTheSuperman: Akutagawa still has powers without clothes, but they're pretty useless without clothes, seeing as his Ability is the manipulation of any clothing he's wearing. He puts it to awesome effect, turning his BadassLongcoat into an ExtremeOmnivore and creating anything from spikes to armor out of it.
* ClothingCombat: His basic power is turning the clothes he wears into a deadly weapon.
* DoesntLikeGuns: In the original Dark Era novel, he says that 'Guns are the weapons of fools'.
* DoesNotLikeSpam: Doesn't like oranges and horsebeans.
* TheDreaded: Due to the brutality of his methods and his powerful Ability, he is feared by both the Agency and his subordinates (who only follow his orders due to the fear they have for him). In fact, the first thing Kunikida says to Atsushi when he joins the Agency is precisely avoid any contact with him.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: Akutagawa has black hair and sickly pale skin. His pallor may have something to do with his illness.
* EmptyEyes: His eyes reflect no light, emphasizing his murderous nature and sickly condition. In the manga, his eyes are more or less just black holes, and is signifies that he is already 'extremely tainted'.
* EvenEvilCanBeLoved: His subordinate Higuchi is devotedly in love with him even though Akutagawa is an unhinged and brutal member of Port Mafia.
* EvilWearsBlack: He's one of the most dangerous members of Port Mafia and his outfit is primarily black.
* ExpositoryPronoun: Akutagawa refers to himself as "yatsugare". This Japanese pronoun is considered a very old-fashioned and overly humble way to refer to oneself, which comes at odds with Akutagawa's rude and dismissive behavior. The reason might be that the real-life Akutagawa wrote stories based on ancient Japan.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: The existence of Akutagawa's [[spoiler:sister]] is revealed in chapter 24.5, almost 20 chapters before [[spoiler:Gin]]'s relation to Akutagawa is exposed.
* FaceMonsterTurn: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. At best, he was an AntiHero due to being part of the Port Mafia. [[spoiler:After he's killed by Fukuchi however, he's revived as a Vampire in his service by Bram, and directly turns Higuchi and Jono.]]
* GratuitousForeignLanguage: During his fight against Hawthorne, Akutagawa calls him "Irmão" (Portuguese for "brother").
* GreenEyedMonster: He tries to kill anyone Dazai favors over him. The whole reason why Akutagawa hates Atsushi so much is because Dazai told him Atsushi is a better subordinate than him.
* HatesBaths: Akutagawa dislikes bathing because it means that he won't be able to use his Ability and would become defenseless. This is lampshaded in one of the CD dramas, where Chuuya has to force him to bath by commanding him to so as an executive.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: His only power is ''[[ClothingCombat to control clothing]]''. He learned to create barriers, raise himself up in the air, and make 'locks' that restrain enemies.
* HeroicSacrifice: [[spoiler:Puts himself in harms' way in Chapter 88 to save Atsushi.]]
* HistoricalInJoke:
** His relationship with Dazai is rather ironic given that, in real-life, Ryunosuke Akutagawa was an ''inspiration'' to Osamu Dazai, with his suicide at 35 being often cited as an inspiration for Dazai's depression and ultimate death by suicide himself.
** His coughing is a reference to his real counterpart who suffered from pleurisy.
** The real Akutagawa [[HatesBaths hated baths]] too, finding them time-wasting.
* IGaveMyWord: He makes good on his promise to Atsushi and avoids killing people for half a year.
* IronicNickname: All his nicknames involve [[AnimalMotif dogs]], but they're stated under his dislikes.
* LeanAndMean: Strictly said, he's underweight. His BMI is just 16.9, with his length at 172 cm and his weight at 50 kg. That and his UndeathlyPallor may have to do with his coughing. In the original Dark Era novel, [[https://nkhrchy.tumblr.com/post/147367058492/bsd-novel-dazai-osamu-and-the-dark-era-chapter Odasaku remarks]] that 'he's light, like a withered branch'.
* LoveMartyr: Dazai treated Akutagawa poorly when the latter was his subordinate, even ''firing a gun at him'' when he disapproved of Akutagawa's actions, and then Dazai left Port Mafia without a word, essentially abandoning Akutagawa. Despite of it, there isn't anyone in the world Akutagawa respects more than Dazai, to the point Akutagawa almost worships him, and he still seeks Dazai's acceptance with desperation.
* MasterOfThreads: Akutagawa's Ability, Rashomon, enables him to control any clothes he's wearing. He often uses his powers to transform his BadassLongcoat into armor, form TendrilsOfDarkness capable of slicing cars in half and create a mouth that can ''eat space''. [[UnskilledButStrong However, while his Ability is incredibly powerful, Akutagawa lacks the creativity necessary to utilize its full potential.]]
* MeaningfulName: 'Ryuunosuke', means, 'Dragon boy'. The author was named that because he was born in the year of the Dragon, at the hour of the Dragon in the month of the Dragon. In Asia, being born under the sign of the Dragon is considered lucky. Here, Ryuunosuke is the counterpart to [[TigerVsDragon a white tiger]] Ability user.
* MightyGlacier: Rashoumon is extremely powerful but quite slow to activate.
* MoodSwinger: He can go from calm to murderously angry in a matter of seconds.
* MythicalMotifs:
** His overall character design has elements that are evocative of a classic vampire. [[spoiler:Fittingly, he's eventually turned into a vampire by Bram Stoker.]]
** Also dragons, since his name means 'Dragon son' and Rashoumon has a certain dragon-like body and a head that resembles that of a [[OurDragonsAreDifferent Chinese dragon]] (minus the whiskers and antlers). [[TigerVersusDragon This also reflects his opposite nature of Atsushi]].
** These actually fit together, since Dracula means "Son of the Dragon".
* NoBrows: He gives off this impression, but does actually have eyebrows although they're very faint and hard to see.
* NoSocialSkills: Even though he's a part of the mafia, he avoids interacting with the other members, and mainly only speaks with Ichiyo Higuchi, his subordinate.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: Akutagawa himself comments in the similarities between himself and Kyouka during their fight in Chapter 49, noting how she's realized the value in her own life, just like him (although the description he gives in the last line can also fit Dazai effortlessly).
---> '''Akutagawa''': "You've certainly changed, Kyouka. Those eyes...They're different from when I first saw you. Before, revenge was in your eyes. Revenge towards life. When you jumped with the bomb on the train, when you sank the smuggling ship, and when you went out on Moby Dick - I didn't see value for your own life in your eyes."\
'''Kyouka''': "Why do you know about things like that?"\
'''Akutagawa''': "I know because there was once a man with those same eyes."\
'''Kyouka''': "What happened to that man?"\
'''Akutagawa''': "The same as you. He met a certain person and joined a certain organization, and the hope for death in his eyes vanished. Kyouka, ''I'm glad for you.''"
* PerpetualFrowner: Usually has a calm, emotionless expression on his face. That is until his temper is roused...
* PetTheDog:
** In Chapter 39 of the manga, Akutagawa chooses to let Atsushi off for only one time because the headmaster of his orphanage has recently died, so he's going to let him mourn the loss of his guardian.
** During the Cannibalism arc, Akutagawa takes a moment to tell Kyouka he's sincerely happy to see she has found a reason to live after joining the Agency.
* PowerfulButIncompetent: Akutagawa struggles with this, which is {{lampshaded}} frequently. His Ability, Rashomon, enables him to manifest a sort of monster in the clothes he wears, enabling him to use to create [[AbsurdlySharpBlade razor-sharp]] CombatTentacles, armor and even ''swallow space''. Unfortunately, he has a one-track mind and isn't particularly creative, severely limiting the effectiveness of his powers as he is unable to come up with more effective uses for them and tends to become extremely AxeCrazy. However, overtime he learns to be more inventive.
* PowersDoTheFighting: While he can fight a bit on his own, he mostly relies on his ability for combat.
* PsychologicalProjection: When Akutagawa first met Kyouka, the hopeless look she had in her eyes and her plea for him to kill her caused Akutagawa to see his younger self before he met Dazai in Kyouka. When he tells Atsushi he has given Kyouka value by using her Ability for assassination, Akutagawa is also referencing how joining Port Mafia under Dazai's tutelage made him grow in power and stop wishing for death.
* PutOnABus: He hasn't appeared in the main story since the Cannibalism Arc. However, in the next arc, TheBusCameBack as he was [[StealthPun shadowing]] Atsushi all the time.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: Black and red are his general color scheme.
* RedBaron: People call him the "Silent Rabid Dog" or "Black Cloaked Hellhound". [[AnimalMotifs One might almost see a pattern]]...
* RedOniBlueOni: The Red Oni to Atsushi's Blue Oni. Akutagawa is violent, ill-tempered, and bloodthirsty, in contrast to the much more calm, meek, and gentle Atsushi. This is reflected by how their abilities are visually represented - Akutagawa's is red (and [[DarkIsEvil black]]), Atsushi's is blue (and [[LightIsGood white]]).
* TheResenter: He hates and deeply resents that Atsushi has gotten Dazai's acknowledgment and respect without even trying when Akutagawa has been trying to get that for years with no success.
* SatisfiedStreetRat: Akutagawa is an orphan who grew up in the unforgiving slums where every single day was a struggle for survival. Now, he's one of the strongest, most dangerous members of the Port Mafia, holding a view that those with harsh lives like him are the ones who stand on top of the weak.
* ShadowArchetype: There are hints that he was designed to be the "shadow" to Atsushi's "light". One could interpret Akutagawa as a representation of what Atsushi could become if he hadn't joined the Agency and became obsessed with seeking power only to destroy his enemies instead of protecting people in danger. This is even more obvious in the BEAST AlternateUniverse where Atsushi and Akutagawa switch places in their respective organizations.
* TheSocialDarwinist: He claims that weak people should die and give way to the stronger ones.
* SoProudOfYou: He reveals to Kyouka that he's glad she's found another reason to live besides killing.
--> Akutagawa: "Kyouka... I'm glad for you."
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Sometimes his first name has one U in it instead of two.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Agrees to stop killing for six months so he can duel with Atsushi.
* TookALevelInKindness: It takes him a while to get there, but Atsushi's influence allows him to go from a perpetually agitated, unstable person to a person [[spoiler:actively willing to pull off a HeroicSacrifice to save Atsushi.]] He even pulls off a genuine smile.
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Tea and figs. It's also mentioned that he likes shiruko (red bean soup).
* TroubledButCute: He's antisocial and a highly dangerous member of a criminal organization, but damn is he hot. He has at least one subordinate completely smitten with him.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Right after Odasaku saves him, Akutagawa picks a fight with Odasaku thinking that the lowest ranking Port Mafia member couldn't possibly be as strong as Dazai claimed. Moments later Akutagawa is completely defeated.
* UnknownRival: Of a sort. Atsushi knows who Akutagawa is, but has no idea why Akutagawa hates him in particular so much.
* WeakButSkilled: As to mirror [[UnskilledButStrong Atsushi]]. His body is very frail, his complex is...worrisome, to say softly, and he is heavily underweight. In one of the anthologies, Higuchi [[https://66.media.tumblr.com/535e1f5d6f0341e363fe2b5ed7c6c6d2/tumblr_pb20o8mfFA1wo7g7fo1_1280.jpg is shocked]] when she hears his height and weight. However, he has a very versatile and fearsome power, and because he [[CallingYourAttacks names his techniques]], we know that there are at least 5 different uses to Rashomon, each deadlier than the other. See them all [[https://dic.pixiv.net/a/%E8%8A%A5%E5%B7%9D%E9%BE%8D%E4%B9%8B%E4%BB%8B%28%E6%96%87%E8%B1%AA%E3%82%B9%E3%83%88%E3%83%AC%E3%82%A4%E3%83%89%E3%83%83%E3%82%B0%E3%82%B9%29#h2_2 here]].
* WellDoneSonGuy: The thing Akutagawa wants more than anything is the approval of Dazai, his former superior and mentor figure. When Dazai praises him for the first time ever after Akutagawa helps Atsushi defeat Fitzgerald, Akutagawa faints from joy. [[spoiler:Turns out he's so desperate to make Dazai acknowledge him because he's dying from a lung disease and doesn't want to die being a disappointment to Dazai.]]
* YouRemindMeOfX: He admits that seeing Kyouka's eyes filled with self-loathing reminded him of himself before he joined Port Mafia.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: [[spoiler:He knows he doesn't have much left to live because his lung disease is killing him. Becomes a moot point after he's killed by Fukuchi, then resurrected as a Vampire by Bram.]]

Akutagawa's subordinate. Her Ability is stated to be unknown but makes up for it in firepower.
-----
* AintTooProudToBeg: She makes a PoseOfSupplication in front of Atsushi and Kunikida when she thinks they know something about a beautiful woman she saw with Akutagawa.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: She's in love with the dangerous and coldhearted Akutagawa.
* BadassNormal: Can hold her own against Ability users just by handling guns.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: She becomes significantly more dependent on Akutagawa and less ruthless after her introduction.
* ClingyJealousGirl: She loses it ''bad'' when she thinks her Akutagawa-sempai has a girlfriend ([[RelativeError who was actually his little sister Gin]]). She goes as far as to chase Gin down ''with a gun in hand'' until they clear the misunderstanding.
* CoolShades: Puts on a pair of sunglasses when she reveals her true identity.
* DarkActionGirl: She's part of a criminal organization and she's very skilled with guns.
* GunsAkimbo: Her preferred fighting style.
* HistoricalInJoke:
** Her passionate, one-sided attraction to her superior Akutagawa is a reference to the real Ichiyo Higuchi's unrequited love for her mentor.
** Like the real Higuchi, Bungo Stray Dogs Higuchi also has a little sister.
** She may seem all ruthless and independent upon her introduction, but her mental state is very much dependent on her job, Akutagawa and others who stand above her. Similarly, the real Higuchi was reliant on her sister for the finances, and said sister also made sure that whenever Higuchi went out, she didn't look like something that crawled out of the local dumpster.
* HopelessSuitor: She would be lucky if Akutagawa ever gives her positive attention as just his subordinate.
* IgnoredEnamoredUnderling: It couldn't be more obvious she's head-over-heels for her boss Akutagawa, but he sees her as no one important.
* LoveMartyr: Akutagawa treats her like useless garbage like he does with everyone who isn't Dazai, but Higuchi is completely devoted to him regardless.
* MoreDakka: Wields two sub-machine guns in her confrontation with Tanizaki, Naomi, and Atsushi.
* PokeThePoodle: In an [[http://yeouya.tumblr.com/post/143476930028/bungou-stray-dogs-vol2-omakeextra-cover-comic omake]] she suggests doing this.
--> I'll order a large quantity of life-sized giraffe figures on Amazon and have them sent to the Detective Agency. Furthermore, '''[[EvilIsPetty it'll be payment on delivery]]'''!
* PrimAndProperBun: Usually wears her hair in a messy one.
* SatelliteLoveInterest: Pretty much nothing defines Higuchi aside from her borderline obsessive crush on Akutagawa.
* ShipperWithAnAgenda: When she mistook Gin for Akutagawa's girlfriend, Higuchi supported the idea of Atsushi giving Gin a love letter (although the sender was actually Katai).
* SubordinateExcuse: Working for Akutagawa is the reason why she stays in Port Mafia. Despite her blatant feelings, she's always making up excuses for everything she does for him, claiming it's all "part of her job".
* UndyingLoyalty: She is fiercely loyal to Akutagawa.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: She isn't Akutagawa's actual girlfriend, yet she doesn't hesitate to confront a criminal group that kidnapped him when he was unconscious.

-----
* AdvertisedExtra: The anime put him among the cast listing from before the anime premiered, but he ends up having far less screentime than the other characters in the Port Mafia.
* FightsLikeANormal: Due to the fact that his ability is simply immunity to the Lemon Bombs - not creating them, Kajii has to use his limited combat skills if his bombs aren't enough.
* ForScience: Claims this as his motivation for killing people with bombs. He finds death fascinating and wants to kill as many people as possible to study it.
** He brings it up again in his discussion with Hawthorne about how science, not religion will understand the nature of God and the universe.
* HavingABlast: Carries a near-infinite supply of lemon-shaped bombs, which his Ability grants him immunity to.
* LabcoatOfScienceAndMedicine: Wears a ragged labcoat and claims to be a scientist of sorts.
* MadBomber: Gleefully blows people up with his ability while rambling on about the meaning of death.
* MadScientist: His aesthetic, with the lab coat, safety glasses and all. And because he makes all the bombs himself, he may as well be this.
* NoodleIncident: Never actually brought up or touched upon, but one really has to wonder what exact set of circumstances led to him learning he was immune ''specifically'' to lemon-shaped bombs of all things.
* OutOfFocus: Compared to the rest of its members, Kajii is rarely seen talking to other members of the Port Mafia.
* SlasherSmile: Often sports one.
* SmugSnake: Constantly speaks in a condescending tone to others and loves taunting his victims. [[PowersDoTheFighting Unfortunately, he has next to no combat abilities beyond his 'Lemon Bomb' power]], and gets his ass handed to him by Yosano.

* WeaksauceWeakness: As noted above, because his ability does not create the Lemon Bombs, he's very weak if he runs out or is separated from them.

A CreepyChild Mafiosi of Port Mafia introduced during the Guild Arc, known by their codename "Q". Their ability "Dogra Magra" allows them to control the mind of anyone who injures them.
-----
* AmbiguousGender: Q has a very androgynous appearance. At the end of ''Dazai, Chuuya, Fifteen Years Old'', Dazai asks Mori what gender Q is and Mori admits he'd need to check Q's medical records to find out.
* BullyingADragon: While Yumeno has one of the strongest Abilities seen so far, they try to use it on Lovecraft, which backfires horribly, resulting in their kidnapping and torture.
* ColdBloodedTorture: Undergoes this due to Steinbeck torturing them with his vines that are connected all across Yokohama, so once Yumeno activities their Ability the city will be in chaos.
* CreepyChild: Q is a child with a frightening MindRape Ability, taking pleasure in watching people go mad because of it.
* CuteAndPsycho: Looks like a very adorable child, but has the personality and mindset of a demon.
* CreepyDoll: Uses one that's linked to their Ability.
* DeliberateInjuryGambit: They keep razors tied to their arms so that simply bumping into them will cut them and thus trigger their Ability, cursing the one who harmed them.
* TheDreaded: Their power is so terrifying that Mori has to shut them down to avoid a disaster.
* EnfanteTerrible: Despite being a child, they're positively bloodthirsty. According to Dazai, people died by the masses to lock them up.
* ExoticEyeDesigns: Their right eye has a star-shaped pupil.
* FaceOfAnAngelMindOfADemon: While Q can play the part of a harmless, innocent child, they are quick to 180 into a twisted, sadistic psycho.
* HumanizingTears: No matter how much of a CreepyChild Q is, it's hard not to feel sorry for them when they cry like a normal child during Steinbeck's torture of them.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: When Steinbeck tortures them to spread Dogra Magra by all Yokohama, they start to cry that they didn't want to have their ability and just wanted to live a normal life.
* MindRape: Their Ability is a mind control curse that curses his targets by ravaging their consciousness with hallucinations, causing them to attack everyone in sight with no regard on whom they might be; friends or enemies.
* OlderThanTheyLook: It's somewhat hard to believe Q is only a year younger than Kenji.
* OnlyKnownByTheirNickname: Everyone calls them Q.
* PsychoticSmirk: Tends to do these while their Ability is playing out.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Tries to mind rape '''Lovecraft''' of all people. They end being the one screwed at the end.
* WhatHappenedToTheMouse: After Dazai and Chuuya rescue them from the Guild and are then attacked by Lovecraft, no mention is made of them afterwards nearly 20 chapters later. Presumably, Chuuya took Q back with him to the Mafia.
* WingdingEyes: The pupil of their right eye is a star.

* BadassNormal: Has no power, in a world full of those that do. Is equally capable of kicking your ass.
* BewareTheQuietOnes: Not much of a talker, but definitely deadly. Nearly attacks Tachihara after he taunts her, despite the fact that they were on a job.
* CombatStilettos: She wears high-heeled boots in the manga.
* CoolMask: The lower half of her face is covered with a white mask most of the time.
* CreepyCrosses: She wears a cross around her neck in the manga, both referencing how her namesake was a Christian and adding to her slight {{Goth}} look.
* DarkActionGirl: As is standard for female characters in the Port Mafia.
* DeviousDaggers: Befitting a stealthy assassin, she uses two knives as her weapon of choice.
* EeriePaleSkinnedBrunette: A scary assassin with jet-black hair and pale skin. It's a trait she shares with her brother Ryuunosuke.
* FashionableAsymmetry: One of her sleeves covers her entire arm. On the other arm, her sleeve is ripped short above her elbow, and she wears an elbow-length glove.
* FirstNameBasis: Everyone calls her Gin to hide the fact that she has the family name of Akutagawa.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: The fact that there are two Akutagawas is revealed in chapter 24.5, almost 20 chapters before Gin's relation to Akutagawa is exposed.
* LadyLooksLikeADude: Higuchi assumes that Gin is male at first, and Hirotsu refers to her at her introduction as such too. Dazai reveals that Gin is actually female and has a cute voice.
* LettingHerHairDown: She undoes the ponytail and goes around with her hair down outside of work.
* ProfessionalKiller: She specializes in assassination for Port Mafia.
* TheQuietOne: She has no spoken lines in the first season, lampshaded by her voice actor being listed as "????". She does get a line of dialog in the second season, and it's revealed that her voice is actually cute. And her reveal in Season 3 that she is Gin's sister cuts to Atushi, Kunikada, and Higuchi's reaction to the knowledge.
* RavenHairIvorySkin: Not unlike her brother, she has raven-colored hair and light skin. When she lets her hair down and takes off the mask, she's incredibly gorgeous.
* RelativeError: Higuchi thought Gin and Ryuunosuke were lovers after finding out they spend time together outside of work. Then she discovered they're siblings.
* SamusIsAGirl: She wears a black coat that conceals her figure, and a white mask that covers her nose and mouth. When it's revealed she's actually a girl, even her coworker Higuchi is shocked.
* SheCleansUpNicely: As a member of Port Mafia, she looks intimidating and androgynous, causing many to mistake her for a guy. On the rare occasions that she dresses casually, she's a stunning beauty. Even Higuchi couldn't recognize her despite working together.
* ShoutOut: She's named after the protagonist in the short story "O-Gin", by Ryuunosuke Akutagawa.
* VocalDissonance: Given how threatening she looks as an assassin, her adorable high-pitched voice (courtesy of Creator/ShiinaNatsukawa) comes off as a big surprise. When in a casual dress, however, it fits her perfectly.

* OnlySaneMan: Perhaps due to his generic design, Tachihara often plays the sane man in Port Mafia-centered [[http://snowyesque.tumblr.com/post/145930451529/ Wan]] [[http://bungoustraydogs-wan.tumblr.com/post/152164843273/ chapters]] and [[http://bungousd.tumblr.com/post/146280430263/ omakes]], contrasting the more eccentric members.
* PointlessBandaid: Across his nose. He takes it off when [[spoiler:he's not undercover]].
* {{Revenge}}: [[spoiler:He blames Yosano for the suicide of his older brother and infiltrated Port Mafia in order to obtain the chance to face Yosano.]]
* SuccessfulSiblingSyndrome: He had an older brother who was better than him at everything. Tachihara felt like he lived in his brother's shadow and in order to cope with it, Tachihara resorted to delinquency and crime.
* TragicKeepsake: [[spoiler:To this day, Tachihara keeps his deceased brother's dog tag in which the latter counted the number of times Yosano healed him.]]
* UndercoverCopReveal: [[spoiler:He's the last member of the Hunting Dogs who infiltrated Port Mafia to replace Ango as the government DoubleAgent.]]
* WalkingSpoiler: [[spoiler:More than any other character in the CastHerd at this point. Everything you're led to believe about him is thrown completely out of the window by (the now infamous) [[WhamEpisode chapter 68]].]]
* WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises: Does one when [[spoiler: he gets an identity crisis]].
* YouShouldHaveDiedInstead: [[spoiler:People voiced their disappointment over Tachihara living on after his talented brother killed himself.]]

-->'''Literary references:''' He is named after Japanese author Sakunosuke Oda, and his ability is a reference to Oda's short story ''Flawless''. [[note]] This series is the first instance of the term used in the book title being translated. See LostInTranslation.[[/note]]

A low-ranked member of Port Mafia and a close friend of Dazai's. The co-protagonist and point of view character of ''Osamu Dazai and the Dark Era''. His ability, "Flawless," [[note]] See LostInTranslation below [[/note]] allows him to see a few seconds into the future when his life is in danger.
-----
* CombatClairvoyance: His ability allows him to see a few seconds into the future whenever his life is in danger, which allows him to avoid death multiple times.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Used to work as an assassin before meeting Soseki.
* DespairEventHorizon: When Mimic kills the children he was raising, his whole world crumbles. It's so bad he even gives up his dream for the sake of his revenge.
* DidYouJustScamCthulhu: Not long after meeting Dazai, Oda convinces him to come a place he claims he has to see before he dies. Oda then proceeds to take Dazai to a bar and explains to the stunned mafioso that it was an obvious lie since there was no chance he'd have information about a place the mafia was unaware of.
* DiedInYourArmsTonight: Dies in Dazai's arms while telling him that he won't find a purpose in life wallowing in darkness and urges him to become a better person.
* DoomedProtagonist: He's the point of view character in the Dark Era, and in every timeline or universe, he will die because it's what finally pushes Dazai to defect to the Armed Detective Agency. [[spoiler:That is why the BEAST universe is there in the first place because Dazai wanted a universe in which he lives. It doesn't ''quite'' work.]]
* FailureIsTheOnlyOption: Related to the above.
* FightsLikeANormal: His ability is purely defensive, so any fighting he does is using his own skills.
* FriendToAllChildren: He took in five orphaned children and they are fond of him. When Mimic kills the children, Oda loses his will to live and only cares about revenge.
* FriendlyNeighborhoodGangster: While he is in the Port Mafia, he refuses to kill people, to the point of being the most merciful member of all the organization. He even decides to stay in the lowest position of the organization despite his talent, much to Mori's and Dazai's confusion.
* InSeriesNickname: Gets called "Odasaku" (a combination of his surname and the two first syllables of his name) by Dazai and Ango, although this also qualifies as HistoricalInJoke because his namesake also received this nickname.
* LastRequest: In his final moments, Oda asked Dazai to become a better person and go to the side that saves people.
* LostInTranslation: His Ability name, kind of. The term 天衣無縫 [[note]] Lit. 'Heavenly Garments Without Stitching' [[/note]] is hard to translate, and it being named 'Flawless' in the English translation only carries part of the weight it carries (similarly to Light Snow). The fact that the series is the very first instance of the term being translated also does not help the matter. Read more about it [[https://skeelstranslations.wordpress.com/2018/11/19/translating-天衣無縫/ here]].
* MutualKill: Manages to kills Gide at the end, but he dies from the wounds he received during the fight.
* NotSoHarmlessVillain: While his status as a "villain" is debatable (if nothing else, he ''is'' the nicest of all the organization's powered members) and he himself believes his ability to be nigh-worthless [[spoiler:before he's forced to go all out against Gide,]] Dazai has a much more realistic view of what Oda is capable of. His words to Akutagawa (after the latter scoffs at the idea of Oda being dangerous) sum it up well.
-->''"He could kill us all. Every single one of us, no matter how strong. He could kill us before we could ever fight back if he wanted to."''
* OnlyFriend: To Dazai. Oda was the sole person who understood Dazai. He urged Dazai to save people instead of killing them as he recognized that it would be the better option for him.
* OnlyICanKillHim: Oda, Gide, and Mori all believe that Oda is the only one who can defeat Gide properly since their abilities counteract each others.
* PlotTriggeringDeath: His tragic death and dying wish were what motivated Dazai to leave Port Mafia and join the Agency, which eventually leads him to meet and recruit Atsushi.
* PermaStubble: It's never shown being longer than on the image, but it's possible it's because the Dark Era is in fact an ExtremelyShortTimespan.
* PosthumousCharacter: Was killed four years before the series began.
* PunchClockVillain: He's working for the Mafia largely because he wouldn't be able to find legitimate work easily due to his past as an assassin and it pays well.
* PursueTheDreamJob: His real dream is to be a writer. He plans to leave the mafia at some point and the reason why he doesn't want to kill anyone is he believes that someone who has killed people doesn't have the right to create stories. Unfortunately, [[spoiler:he gives up on his dream when Mimic kills the orphans he raised and he decides to avenge them.]]
* RedOniBlueOni: The blue to Gide's red. In contrast to Gide, who is passionate and quick to anger, Oda is mostly calm, rational, and serious. This is reflected in how their Abilities are visually represented - Oda's is blue, Gide's is red.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: After deciding to avenge his adopted orphans, he goes to Mimic's headquarters and proceeds to kill every single member he encounters. He succeeds but at the cost of his own life.
* ShoutOut: To Creator/AlexandreCabanel's ''Art/TheFallenAngel''. During the Dark Era {{prequel}}, [[https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/cabanel_sasunosuke_oda.jpg Odasaku briefly adopts]] Lucifer's iconic pose (right arm covering his mouth) while charging with an axe. He may not be crying, but he's every bit as hateful and angry and has a DramaticWind tousling his hair. Odasaku has been associated with UsefulNotes/{{Christian|ity}} imagery once before and is widely regarded as Dazai's guardian angel.
* TheStoic: He's usually very calm and collected, rarely showing emotions in his face.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Tries to adhere to this philosophy after meeting Natsume Soseki, but ultimately gives up after [[spoiler:Mimic kills the orphans he was looking after]].
* TrademarkFavoriteFood: Curry. Though he states instead of liking the dish he just gets used to eating it and feels uncomfortable if he doesn't. This obviously refers to his namesake, however, who was known for loving it and at [[https://nkhrchy.tumblr.com/post/160331712397/i-really-want-to-eat-curry-somewhere-along this restaurant]] (which carries the same name as one of his namesake's works) you can see it too.
* TragicBromance: He was Dazai's BestFriend and his tragic death hit Dazai so hard that it triggered a drastic change in his personality and motivated him to leave Port Mafia and help those in need as Odasaku wanted.
** However, some people think Dazai's feelings for Oda were not solely platonic. Atsushi asks him at Oda's grave if the person was someone he was in love with. Dazai's response is a [[WistfulSmile sad smile]].
* TranquilFury: During his RoaringRampageOfRevenge against Mimic, while killing every member he comes across, he never once loses his composure. He just pulls the trigger and kills with a completely stoic expression.
* NotSoStoic: His usual stoicism is completaly gone for a while after [[spoiler:kids that he was taking care of are killed by Gide]]. After his emotional outburst he does pretty much come back to his old calm way of being, though he's clearly in a worse mental state.
