The Alvarez Empire is a colossal military superpower located on Alakitasia, the neighboring continent to Ishgal. Rising tensions with the nation following the destruction of the Magic Council's deterrent weapons have sparked worries of war, and for currently unknown reasons, the Empire seems hell-bent on capturing Lumen Histoire, Fairy Tail's ultimate treasure. A previous attempt at an invasion of Ishgal ended in failure due to the weapons of the Magic Council, but with the Council being killed and Face destroyed, war seems all but inevitable by the time of Fairy Tail reforms itself in X792.

[[folder:Alvarez Empire in General]]
* AboveGoodAndEvil: Alvarez makes no distinction between light and dark magic. The elite guard doesn't seem to care that their emperor can kill anything around him.
* AntagonistAbilities: Many of its members, especially the Spriggan 12, turn out to have won the SuperpowerLottery in some shape or form. Special mention goes to SuperpowerLottery jackpot winners [[TheArchmage August]], [[RealityWarper Irene]] and [[AGodAmI DiMaria]].
* BadassArmy: Count how many times you'll see the word 'badass' on this page.
* BigFancyCastle: The imperial palace in Vistarion is ''huge'' and towers over the entire rest of the capital city.
* CoDragons: August, Irene, and Invel all serve as Zeref's closest allies. The former two are two of the most powerful members of the 12 that Fairy Tail has the dubious honor of facing, while the latter is Zeref’s chief-in-staff and stays at his masters side at all times.
* CoolAirship: Alvarez has an entire armada of armed-to-the-teeth air-battleships at its disposal. When they start showing up, there's a MassOhCrap reaction.
* CultureChopSuey: {{Justified|Trope}} in that a continent-spanning nation as massive as Alvarez created out of formerly disparate countries would be incredibly diverse, but in terms of inspirations, Alvarez's government appears to be a take on pre-Magna Carta England (a supremely powerful monarch who can and often does leave the actual governing to a Ministry while he's off doing something else). Their symbol strongly resembles a FleurDeLis (the symbol of French royalty), and Spriggan is regarded by Ishgal as a Napoleon-esque figure (VillainWithGoodPublicity to his people, TheDreaded by everyone else). The desert region is clearly based on AncientPersia, with Ajeel's attacks called out in [[GratuitousForeignLanguage Gratuitous Arabic]], and the capital, Vistarion, has architecture that appears to be based on a mixture of Renaissance-era Italy, Germany, and France. They also celebrate "Respect for the Aged Day," a RealLife holiday celebrated in Japan, something that isn't celebrated in Ishgal.
* TheDreaded: The Empire's very concept strikes dread into the hearts of everyone in Ishgal: they are 730 guilds strong, light and dark combined, outnumbering Ishgal's 500; their elite fighting force, the Spriggan 12, equal if not outmatch the Ten Wizard Saints (the strongest of which, to make matters worse, defected to their side); and Spriggan--the man who united and commands them all--also happens to be Zeref, the most terrifying dark wizard who ever lived.
* TheEmpire: Alvarez has conquered the entire continent of Alakitasia after overthrowing their equivalent of the Magic Council, and they have their eyes set on Ishgal.
* FromNobodyToNightmare: Emperor Spriggan claims that Alvarez was originally a tiny country when he first set it up. Then he kept absorbing more and more guilds into it until about a hundred years later, when it's become a continent-wide superpower.
* GodzillaThreshold: An invasion from the Empire is one of the only reasons the Magic Council would have considered deploying [[KillSat Etherion]] or [[TheMagicGoesAway Face]]. Unfortunately, the past arcs' antagonists' actions removed those weapons from the playing field.
* InconsistentDub: The initial Kodansha translation of the name was "Albareth" before the proper spelling was revealed, though this didn't stop A-1 Pictures and [=CloverWorks=] from using the same spelling for the anime. However, Funimation still calls it "Alvarez".
* KnightOfCerebus: They are among the few enemies that Fairy Tail has been shown to fear. Pointedly, the token ThisMeansWar scene has resident BloodKnight Natsu admit to being afraid, and this time around, the RousingSpeech was more of a pep talk than an attempt to get Fairy Tail pumped up.
* MillionMookMarch: Alvarez's army numbers ''at least'' over a million strong; in fact, the bulk of the invasion force that marches on Ishgal from the west led by Invel and Zeref actually numbers at a million, to say nothing of the initial airship assault, the armada from the south, and the smaller expedition from the north with all the soldiers needed to mobilize the vehicles and weapons necessary.
* MilitaryMage: The army consists of the combined forces of all the guilds on the continent, with the scale ranging from lowly {{Mooks}} to the likes of the [[PersonOfMassDestruction Spriggan 12]].
* {{Mooks}}: Like the Baram Alliance or the Fiore Kingdom, they have a large amount of soldiers at their disposal, though certainly by far the greatest amount.
* SortingAlgorithmOfEvil: They're far more dangerous than the Balam Alliance. While the Balam Alliance were no slouches either, the Alvarez Empire has over a million {{Mooks}}, EliteMooks of which some cause trouble to Fairy Tail members, the QuirkyMinibossSquad is as strong as Ishgal's strongest who's also one of them and they're led by Zeref, who's the most powerful mage in history.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Their opening strike against Magnolia is made up of a fleet of fifty full-sized air-battleships flying higher than conventional radar systems can detect, and dropping right down on top of all of them. Once Fairy Tail retaliates with the Dragon Slayers on with their Exceed and Jupiter, it's quickly revealed that this was a feint; Spriggan actually had three hundred more ships converging from all sides, another army poking a hole in Fried's barrier, an incoming MillionMookMarch, and all of the Spriggan 12 mixed in. This is actually {{justified|Trope}} because Zeref knows just how brilliant of a strategist Mavis is, and wanted to throw her off of her game by forcing her to tip her hand early and then turn her playbook on its head.
* WouldHurtAChild: Their {{mooks}} would, anyway. Witnessing this is what causes Team Natsu to have their first hostile encounter with them.

!!!'''Voiced by:''' Takashi Matsuyama (Japanese), Andy Mullins (English)

The High Minister of the Alvarez Empire, and grandfather of the Spriggan 12's Ajeel Raml.
----
* AffablyEvil: He may be on the opposing side, but he went completely out of his way to make sure Makarov was treated as an honored guest of the Empire, teaching him how to play a popular card game played in Alvarez.
* CoolOldGuy: For a member of TheEmpire, he's very friendly.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He is sad to hear of Ajeel's defeat and possible death since he's his grandson.
* IWasQuiteTheLooker: In the anime, Yajeel comments that he looked quite a lot like Ajeel when he was younger, including having the same AnimeHair. Ajeel is annoyed when Elfman quips he'll look like his grandpa as a result.
* LikeFatherUnlikeSon: Yajeel is a CoolOldGuy that treats his country's unofficial enemies respectfully. His grandson, on the other hand, is an ArrogantKungFuGuy who doesn't treat his own emperor formally.
* MrExposition: He's the one who tells Makarov about Emperor Spriggan and the Spriggan 12.
* TakeMeInstead: He begs Elfman and Lisanna to take his life instead of Ajeel.
* TokenGoodTeammate: In an empire where every major resident in it is either a proponent of war or just indifferent to it, Yajeel is the only one who understands that WarIsHell.
* UndyingLoyalty: The way he gushes about the Emperor would make one wonder if he knows (or cares) that he's the Black Wizard. And judging how he knows about his curse, he most likely does.

!!Spriggan 12

The elite bodyguards and personal enforcers of Emperor Spriggan, the Spriggan 12 is also known as the Shields of Spriggan. Each of them is said to be so formidable, their magic power is well beyond Ishgal's Ten Wizard Saints.

[[folder:Spriggan 12 in General]]
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: As the strongest wizards of the Alvarez Empire, a number of them also serve as generals in the imperial army.
* BadassCrew: Individually, each member is said to be at least as strong as the mightiest of the Ten Wizard Saints, who also happens to be on their side. All but two of them (Invel and Wall) could not be defeated by the best fighters Fairy Tail had to offer without some serious teamwork and/or creativity, while the best of them (August and Irene) take a serious beatdown from two of the series' biggest powerhouses (Gildarts and Erza), and ''still'' didn't go down, only [[SelfDisposingVillain dying by their own hands]].
* BareMidriffsAreFeminine: The three female members all leave their midriffs on display, though [=DiMaria=] later changes to a LeotardOfPower.
* BodyguardingABadass: When the Emperor is [[BigBad Lord Zeref]] himself, any kind of bodyguard and protector he has automatically becomes this.
* EarlyBirdCameo: All twelve members make an appearance at the start of the Avatar arc, each with their FaceFramedInShadow or their backs facing the screen.
* EqualOpportunityEvil: The Spriggan 12 are composed of people from various places and non-humans. Ajeel most likely comes from a desert-like region; [=DiMaria=] is a descendant from the people of Mildian, the birthplace of Zeref; God Serena, Brandish, August, and Irene came from Ishgal, the country they seek to destroy; and four of them aren't human at all (Wall is a Machias, Bloodman and Larcade are Etherious, and Irene is a human-turned-dragon).
* FallenHero:
** Irene was once a beloved Queen of Dragnof, a kingdom in ancient Ishgal where humans and dragons lived together in harmony. Unfortunately, her invention of Dragon Slayer magic wiped out most of dragonkind and turned her into one herself. [[StartOfDarkness It all went downhill from there]].
** Being the number one ranked Wizard Saint meant that the Magic Council recognized God Serena as the most powerful wizard on the continent who isn't a dark wizard. Then he ran off to go join the Alvarez Empire, Ishgal's biggest geopolitical threat, just to take a crack at Acnologia.
* TheForceIsStrongWithThisOne: They all have magic power so extreme, hardened badasses like Natsu, Gray, and Kagura lose their composure against them.
* AGodAmI: No less that ''four'' of them (Ajeel, God Serena, [=DiMaria=], and Bloodman) declare themselves or their powers to be godlike in scope, with only [=DiMaria=] being truly {{justified|Trope}} since her power ''actually does'' come from a god. Ironically, the three legitimately strongest (August, Irene, and Larcade) make no such declaration of themselves.
* IAmNotLeftHanded: Every time Fairy Tail and their allies think they've proven themselves more than a match for these so-called mightiest wizards in the world, their opponents whip out a massively powerful new spell that reveals just how much they've been holding back.
* MilitaryMage: They all hold high-ranking positions in Alvarez's military and many possess their own personal squads.
* MythicalMotifs: Spriggans, one of the most sinister types of the fae, in contrast to Fairy Tail's own association with fairies.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: These guys indeed stand among the most powerful villains in the series, and to their credit, a majority of them take quite a bit of effort, teamwork, and exploitation of their {{Achilles Heel}}s for Fairy Tail and their allies to take down, with a handful of them [[SelfDisposingVillain destroying themselves]] rather than suffering any true defeat. But because they are built up as being so powerful that Fairy Tail shouldn't ''attempt'' to fight them, it lessens their impact when it turns out all the heroes needed to do to beat most of them was to try anyway.
* OneManArmy: Judging by the powers (Wall's ultimate attack is Etherion, an explicit nation-destroying weapon), feats (August, Jacob and God Serena wiped out the nation of Bosco without breaking a sweat and no sign it actually tired them in any manner) and epithets (Brandish the "Nation Destroyer") of the various members, each one of them could conquer/destroy an entire ''country'' on their lonesome with at least some effort.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: Most of them seem to be differentiated from past villains not by having ancient Lost Magic (like the Seven Kin of Purgatory) or dirty, underhanded tactics and creative uses of magic (like the Nine Demon Gates), but by having sheer magical power and skill, using spells that are on such a wide scale that have hardly ever been shown in the series before.
* PraetorianGuard: Each of them was hand-picked by Zeref, the BigBad, due to their level of power. They are answerable only to him, and are at the top of the chain of command in the Imperial Military.
* QuirkyMinibossSquad: Par the course of ''Fairy Tail'', the Spriggan 12 are a colorful bunch of characters that wouldn't be out of place in the guild with a few attitude adjustments. It's just that [[PersonOfMassDestruction each one has the magic power capable of bringing entire nations to their knees]].
* RedBaron: All of them except Neinhart had a certain kind of epithets.
* SelfDisposingVillain: Only two of them, August and Irene, are far too powerful for Fairy Tail's strongest to defeat, in the end, instead choosing to commit suicide (August to [[TakingYouWithMe take his enemies with him]], Irene [[DrivenToSuicide out of grief]] [[spoiler: and secretly enchanting her mind into Wendy's subconcious so she can finally escape the living hell of dragonification and seek a suitable body that isn't beset by a Dragon Seed]].
* SmugSuper: Pretty much all of them have a sense of superiority regarding their abilities. Given that Zeref considers them the strongest mages in Alvarez it's more than warranted.
* StoryBreakerPower: Mashima admits the Spriggan 12 have AntagonistAbilities that most manga authors avoid giving their villains because "they'd destroy the framework of the story".
* SuperpowerLottery: These guys have hit the jackpot, being twelve of the most powerful wizards to walk the earth. Mashima openly describes each of their abilities as a different form of "cheating" magic.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: Zigzagged. While they serve as the emperor's bodyguards, most of the twelve don't see each other as comrades, with some of them laughing at the others for getting beaten. That being said, Brandish and [=DiMaria=] are VitriolicBestBuds, August is fiercely protective of the entire group, and a few such as the likes of Jacob and Larcade help each other out without hesitation, which showcases that not all of them are completely dismissive of each other.
* WorldsBestWarrior: They are this to Alakitasia where they are well renowned throughout the continent for their immeasurable strength and magical power as the Shields of Spriggan.
* YouDontLookLikeYou: Some of the Spriggan 12's silhouettes bore little to no resemblance to members who later appeared; notably none of the silhouettes resembled Jacob Lessio, Bloodman, Neinhart, Irene Belserion or Larcade Dragneel. Wall Eehto also possessed a small creature (implied to be Obra from Raven Tail) perched on his shoulder.

[[folder:August]]
!!"Wizard King" August
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/YoshitoYasuhara, Creator/NatsumiFujiwara [child] (Japanese); Bruce [=DuBose=], Creator/BrittanyLauda [child] (English)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/august_ft_2018.png]]

The leader and mightiest member of the Spriggan 12, and the secret son of Zeref and Mavis, though only he is aware of his own heritage. Gifted with tremendous magic power at birth, August can instantly copy any form of Caster-type magic he sees and add it to his ever-growing repertoire of spells, making him one of the most powerful wizards to walk the earth.
----
* AboveGoodAndEvil: This creed is illustrated best when he gives TheReasonYouSuckSpeech to Jellal, deconstructing everything he and Crime Sorcière believe about [[BlackAndWhiteMorality light being "good" and darkness being "evil"]]. As it later turns out, he speaks from experience over the fact that he was abandoned as an infant despite being born with magic that could be classified as neither light nor dark.
* TheAce: Everyone from Makarov to Brandish to Jacob claims that August is the most powerful member of the Spriggan 12, which is demonstrated in full force when he solos most of Crime Sorcière without a scratch, followed by being the only character to fight a fully-powered Gildarts on equal footing. Considering he's the son of the BigBad and BigGood, it's not surprising.
* AchillesHeel: His PowerCopying doesn't work with Holder-type magic, since he is unable to copy the materials required to use such spells.
* AdrenalineMakeover: After Mest brainwashes Brandish into harming August, the wizard assumes a much more intimidating form that turns his skin a deep red, thickens his hare into a long mane, and causes yellow lines of power to etch along his skin, along with letting his chest be fully exposed to reveal a muscular build.
* AffablyEvil: According to Brandish, August is easy to reason with despite working for the infamous Black Wizard, as well as being loyal towards him.
* AffectionateNickname: Brandish refers to him as "Grandpa" to demonstrate the close bond they've shared since she was a child, despite the two having no blood relation.
* AlasPoorVillain: He ultimately ends his suicidal attack on Fiore at the cost of his life alone, with nobody realizing he did it to spare his mother. What's more, his death also ends any hope of his parents ever knowing who he was and what they truly meant to him, with Zeref seeing him as little more than a faithful pawn, and Mavis seeing him as just a formidable enemy with only the vague feeling he was something more when he appears behind her in spirit and child form. [[spoiler:However, Natsu's Beta Heaven experience offers a potential scenario where August and Larcade reap a happy afterlife.]]
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: Due to their fear of his magic, August was treated as an outsider by everyone else, including Precht, who chose to abandon him rather than raise him. This persists well into his old age, where the people of Alvarez fear his wrath as a PersonOfMassDestruction, to the point of dubbing the month of August itself "the Month of Fear". The only ones who don't fear him are his fellow Spriggan 12 members, a number of whom love and admire him.
* AntiMagic:
** He's particularly skilled at negating spells as powerful as Fairy Glitter, making him virtually impervious to magic. It does not, however, have any effect on Holder-type magic.
** The sheer raw power of Ars Magia is so intense that it can actually disrupt magic spells while in use.
* TheArchmage: He knows more kinds of magic than the BigBad himself. Unlike most examples, however, he learned all his powers not through countless years of study, but by winning the SuperpowerLottery with PowerCopying magic.
* BadassLongRobe: Wears the stereotypical wizards robe and is one of the strongest members of the incredibly powerful Spriggan 12.
* BastardBastard: His parents were never married, and while not completely evil, he's loyal to TheEmpire and his BigBad father.
* BeatThemAtTheirOwnGame: His fighting style consists of him calmly and nonchalantly [[AwesomenessByAnalysis analyzing]] his opponents' magic, and then turning it up a notch to hurl it back at them. He uses Grand Chariot on Jellal, time dilation on Racer/Sawyer, a fire-based FantasticNuke on Natsu and his friends, and turns Midnight/Macbeth's spell on him.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Despite his cold and calculated demeanor, he is comparatively the most reasonable member of the Spriggan 12 who is universally respected by his comrades, and loved like a grandfather by Brandish. However, he doesn't hesitate to show his mettle as the world's strongest wizard to those who manipulate his allies, as Mest learns this the hard way when he tries using Brandish to assassinate him.
* BlindObedience: He believes his personal feelings on the war with Fairy Tail are irrelevant. They are ordered to fight, so they fight; any thoughts otherwise would be considered treason. His obedience takes on a whole new light when it's revealed he's Zeref's son.
* BodyHorror: When Ars Magia goes into effect, it causes those caught in it to cough up blood and gasp in pain because ''their blood is evaporating inside their bodies'', which has the side-effect of damaging the respiratory system due to their oxygen drying out. While this goes on, August's own body suffers the same effects and tears itself apart due to the sheer power of his unrestrained magic going wild.
* BornWinner: August had tremendous magic power right out of the gate, which led Precht to contemplate killing him before deciding to simply abandon him. His power was so great that he was born knowing exactly who he was, who his parents were, and what it took to survive on his own. Since then, he has become one of the most powerful [[TheArchmage Archmages]] in the history of Earth-land.
* CoolOldGuy: He is regarded by Brandish to be the most gentle and reasonable of the 12, which is clear from how he protects Ajeel from Laxus's attack, and stops Jacob from attacking Acnologia. Unfortunately, his loyalty to his emperor means a lot more.
* CurbStompBattle: This is what August delivers to Jellal and Crime Sorciere, with none of them standing a chance.
* DangerousForbiddenTechnique: His ultimate trump card, Ars Magia, completely reduces everything and everyone around himself to dust and vapor, with a range ''at least'' the size of a country like Fiore. The drawback is that his own body cannot survive casting the spell, which doesn't stop once cancelled.
* DiedHappilyEverAfter: [[spoiler:His child self, along with a young Larcade, appear with a married Zeref and Mavis, as well as Igneel, in Natsu's Beta Heaven, as the couple's sons. This means August will finally get the parental love and recognition he always wanted.]]
* TheDragon: August is undoubtedly the strongest member of the Spriggan 12, the overall leader of the group, Zeref's most unbendingly right-hand man and the final opponent Fairy Tail faces before the ultimate confrontation with the BigBadEnsemble.
* TheDreaded: Makarov has seen what this guy can do, and he regards him with a mixture of awe and terror. His power is so renowned that his own people, including his fellow 12, regard him as a walking calamity and address the month of August itself "the month of fear" because of him.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: He genuinely loves his parents, whom he knows all too well are unaware of his relationship to them, so much so that when he's gearing up for a suicide attack that'll take out the whole continent, he cancels it out the moment he sees Mavis suffering from it, ultimately killing himself in the process.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: While he believes that the Emperor's enemies should be defeated, he is still against needless violence, considering his more bloodthirsty comrades' sadistic tendencies to be ungraceful at best. He opts to give Mirajane a quick MercyKill instead of leaving her to Irene. He also appears disgusted by Larcade's magic.
* EvilCounterpart:
** To Gildarts. Both of them are the most powerful members to their respective sides, both are the ace wizards of Fairy Tail and the Alvarez Empire respectively, and both are considered to be the [[WorldsStrongestMan worlds strongest men]]. But while Gildarts understood love and a relationship between a parent and a child, August never knew love and never experienced it as he was abandoned as an infant.
** To Cana. Both were left alone to find their fathers and were forced to live in their shadows without ever telling them who they were. But while Cana eventually did tell Gildarts the truth and desires her own independence while having the love of a father, August is content to keep his past a secret and resigns himself to complete servitude under Zeref, never knowing the love of a parent.
* AFatherToHisMen: As the oldest and leading member of the Spriggan 12, he prioritizes his subordinates' safety whenever he can help it. As a result, he is greatly admired by his juniors, and is viewed as a grandfatherly figure by Brandish.
* GameFace: When his skin turns blood crimson, his hair looks as if it's [[FlamingHair set ablaze]], and his body gets covered in {{Power Tattoo}}s, it marks the moment that Fairy Tail realizes they are completely and utterly ''screwed''.
* InstantExpert: His PowerCopying ability allows him to amass an entire arsenal of spells with zero effort, and completely run circles around those who've spent years practicing the art.
* KungFuWizard: On top of his incredible magic power, he is also an exceptionally powerful foe in hand to hand combat. The fact he can fight Gildarts on genuinely even ground is a testament to this.
* LogicalWeakness: His [[PowerCopying magic]] can't copy spells that require equipment he doesn't have.
* LukeYouAreMyFather: He is the love child of Zeref and Mavis, conceived right around the time Mavis "died". However, he never tells his father the truth, and only reaches out to his mother during his death throes.
* MagicStaff: A more classical example of one given the series, with a gnarled, wooden haft and a jewel at the top. He also uses it as a walking staff. Unlike most examples, he also uses it as a melee weapon, skillfully wielding it against Gildarts.
* MasterOfAll: August wields any spell with ease, surpasses those who use the same magic in skill, and is considered the supreme king of all magic, both past and present. However, it is ultimately subverted by the fact that he [[PowerCopying copies his opponents]], and furthermore cannot copy Holder-type magic.
* MeaningfulName: An InUniverse example. Zeref named him August because it was the month of the time he remembered spending with Mavis, whom he states August resembles, without ever knowing that she is his mother.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: August is not one to take joy in fighting or treat his foes as playthings, so he prefers to end his enemies as quickly as possible.
* OldSoldier: He's stood as Zeref's most powerful and loyal subordinate for nearly a century.
* OneWingedAngel: He uses this right off the bat after Mest tries to use Brandish to stab him in the heart, turning his body red and covering it in magic runes, which he maintains throughout the rest of the arc.
* PunchClockVillain: Brandish says that August is a gentle person by nature and the easiest to talk things out with. Much like Brandish herself, he can only be seen as a villain because of his fierce UndyingLoyalty to the Emperor.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Has a prominent purple cape alongside his robes and is among the most powerful wizards in the series.
* RankScalesWithAsskicking: Is the closest thing to a leader amidst the Spriggan 12 and is the most powerful among them, with the possible exception of Irene.
* RedBaron: He has two titles: "Wizard King" and "Calamity", due to being TheArchmage and TheDreaded, respectively.
* SelfDisposingVillain: Despite going toe-to-toe against Gildarts, the strongest wizard in Fairy Tail, August emerges unscathed and resorts to using a self-sacrificial spell in an attempt to kill everyone in Ishgal, but aborts the attack upon seeing his mother Mavis suffering, causing only his own demise.
* SelfFulfillingProphecy: He states to Jellal that the only person who could likely defeat Zeref's son (himself) would be his own mother. As he's preparing to sacrifice himself to destroy Fairy Tail once and for all, he sees Mavis (his mother) in the middle of the devastation and loses his will to do it, allowing his magic power to consume him instead, thus fulfilling his own words about his defeat.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: As a child, August was the spitting image of his mother Mavis, with Zeref noticing their similarity.
* SuicidalCosmicTemperTantrum: After he and Gildarts fail to best each other in combat, August decides it's in his best service to Zeref to just evaporate all of Fiore, himself included, knowing Zeref alone will survive. He's only stopped when he realizes it would cause his own mother to suffer in the crossfire and, inspired by the strong bond between Gildarts and his daughter, cancels his attack at the cost of his own life.
* TakingYouWithMe: He finally decides to finish Fairy Tail off once and for all by unleashing all of his magic power at once, which would kill him as well. However, seeing [[SupernaturallyYoungParent Mavis]] in the middle of the destruction makes him lose his will to go through with it, instead allowing himself to be consumed by his own spell rather than hurt her.
* TemporalThemeNaming: He was named after the month of August by Zeref, who remembered it as the month of time he cherished with Mavis.
* ThickerThanWater: August loves his father and would do anything for him, regardless of whether Zeref -- or anyone else -- knows the truth or not. Similarly, the love he has for his mother in spite of never interacting with her outweighs his loyalty to his father in the end, sacrificing himself simply to keep her safe regardless of the fact she never knew the truth either.
* TragicVillain: Due to being feared and shunned by nearly everyone for his tremendous magic power since birth, August was forced into a position where he could never open up to anyone throughout his life, most of all his own father, Zeref, without risk of triggering his Curse of Contradiction, and his mother, Mavis, who was similarly cursed and sealed away from the rest of the world. This ultimately molded August into a ruthless and obedient pawn in Zeref's game, desperate but unable to reach out to anybody, least of all his parents, in any way without fear of challenging his father's will.
* UndyingLoyalty: He's bound to the Emperor, who is also his father, by this. Sadly, his loyalty to him surpasses his concern for his comrades, as he tries to destroy Magnolia with plenty of Alvarez's troops still there.
* VillainsDyingGrace: He forfeits his life the moment he begins casting Ars Magia, sacrificing his body to destroy Fairy Tail along with the entire country. It's only when he sees Gildarts protect Cana, despite being faced with the futility of it, that he chooses to cancel the spell as an act of love for his mother, making it so only he dies.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: He stops covering his upper body with robes after going OneWingedAngel, laying his totally ripped bod bare for all to see.
* WellDoneSonGuy: August lived his entire life with the sole purpose of being helpful to his father Zeref to get his approval in some way, as his father didn't know they were related and couldn't love him because of it, while simply telling him the truth would not only obstruct Zeref's plans, but would also likely bring him more pain akin to the day he took Mavis's life.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: He states that for all the forms of magic he's learned, the one thing he doesn't understand is the love between a parent and their children, specifically because he never experienced it himself; Zeref was unable to recognize August as his own son, and August resigned himself to never letting him know the truth, feeling that revealing himself would only cause problems for his father, and any love from his parents would activate their curse, killing August. Thus, when he meets Gildarts and Cana, August starts grilling them about their relationship in an attempt to fully comprehend ThePowerOfLove, going as far to threaten Cana's life to see how her dad would respond, which [[PapaWolf blows up in his face]] almost completely.
* WhatYouAreInTheDark: Would you sacrifice your life to slay your enemies for a father who never knew you were his child and only as a loyal subordinate? Would you then choose to kill yourself and spare those enemies for the sake of one among their numbers who is your mother, despite her never knowing your relationship to her and likely never would? August decides "yes" for both questions.
* WizardBeard: Has one befitting an [[TheArchmage archmage]] wielding some of the most powerful magic in the series.
* WorldsStrongestMan: As the leader of and the most powerful male member of the Spriggan 12, with his equal in Irene Belserion being an actual dragon, August is very likely the most powerful mortal man in the series, moreso than Gildarts, the strongest wizard on the heroes' side. The only ones indisputably stronger than August are Zeref, a WalkingWasteland with CompleteImmortality, and Acnologia, who is [[AntiMagic immune to all forms of magic]].

The strongest female wizard of the Spriggan 12, Irene is a High Enchanter who can infuse magic into anything and manipulate it however she wants, making her one of the few among the 12 who could be considered August's equal in terms of magical power. In her heyday, she was the queen of Dragnof and inventor of Dragon Slayer Magic, whose good intentions not only doomed dragonkind to near extinction, but resulted in her own transformation into a dragon. She is also Erza Scarlet's mother, but her deeply troubled history with her daughter has left Irene no more love to give her.
----
* AbusiveMom: She loses any shred of motherly love she has for Erza over the course of her StartOfDarkness, and dumps the newborn in the nearest village she could find. When they face each other years later, she ridicules Erza and does everything she can to make her death as excruciating as possible. Tragically, that love is what compelled her to keep Erza safe in her womb for four centuries, which ultimately drives her to kill herself in the end. [[spoiler:Except she has a contingency plan and a genuine change of heart.]]
* TheAce: She is stated to be the only wizard in existence besides Zeref who can stand up to August and is one of the few who has [[TheAce Erza's]] number when it comes to combat. Just to hammer in how strong she is, she has her skill with magic praised by Acnologia, who tends to see everyone else as insects.
* ActionMom: As if Erza wasn't firmly established as the strongest known female fighter wizard known in Ishgal, her mom is known far and wide as one of the mightiest mages ''alive'' in the entire world, full stop.
* AlasPoorVillain: Erza gives her a genuine farewell after she commits suicide (though she still denies any familial ties to her), expressing pity toward her life's many hardships, and is horrified when Acnologia later arrives to desecrate her corpse. [[spoiler:Her brief stint as a SpiritAdvisor to Wendy when it turns out Irene isn't completely gone from the world of the living shows what she can be like without the living hell she got stuck in eating away at her psyche, and Selene, a Dragon God, is aware of her existence, sees Irene's mission to start life over through saving hers as proper atonement even if no one else will witness it.]]
* TheArchmage: She is considered a mage on equal footing with August, who by all rights, is an absolute monster that has Makarov regard him with sheer awe and terror. Among her two major feats include shrinking the entire landmass of Fiore to 1/20th of its size, and randomly teleporting all of Fiore's citizens and Alvarez soldiers all across the land (except for Zeref, where he was teleported right to Fairy Tail's doorstep). It is for these feats of hers that she is all but outright stated as the strongest woman in the entire setting. It also turns out she's the one who invented Dragon Slayer Magic on account of being [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld four hundred years old]].
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: She mentions that it was due to her unparalleled magic power that she became the Queen of the Dragons.
* TheBaroness: The Sexpot type. Irene is extremely attractive and her {{Stripperiffic}} partially reveals her cleavage and legs. She is also an extremely cruel, selfish, and sadistic woman that doesn't give a damn about her allies and will KickTheDog just ForTheEvulz.
* BecomeARealBoy: She desires to be human as a human-turned-dragon, and was willing to steal her own daughter's body just to begin her life anew. Her current form, which is just a physical alteration Zeref gave her, actually made things ''worse'' as her draconic form couldn't adjust to the needs of the human body, leaving her in a constant state of agony, unable to taste food or sleep, etc. So, when she finally gets her hands on Wendy's body, she does her damnedest to keep it by physically mutilating it when Wendy (in Irene's body) tries taking it back.
* BeingTorturedMakesYouEvil: Not entirely a straightforward case. Although her backstory shows her being tortured for at least three years, it was the threat to her unborn child that caused her powers to go out of control and retaliate with extreme prejudice, and then being trapped in a dragon's body for 400 years and only being given a facsimile of a human form, but then failing to listen to the drawbacks, causes her to go into a FaceHeelTurn.
* BenevolentBoss: At the very least, she treats her direct subordinates Juliet and Heine well, and puts Mirajane through ColdBloodedTorture for taking them out, since they are technically the "children" of her own creation. To her companions and lesser subordinates, however, she is just as cruel and sadistic as she is to her enemies.
* BondVillainStupidity: One would think that the ability to turn into a dragon would grant you access to a ton of quick kill methods, like stepping on people, burning them with your fiery breath, or just plain eating them. Irene instead just limits herself to shattering all of Erza's bones and ''summoning a freaking meteor'' to finish the job. Subverted in that she really can't bring herself to kill her own daughter, which is why she never pulls out her whole arsenal.
* BraidsOfAction: She's got four braided ponytails.
* BreathWeapon: When she first completed her transformation into a new Sage Dragon, she unleashed a Dragon's Roar powerful enough to destroy the castle she had been imprisoned in.
* BrokenBird: Having been subjected to VanHelsingHateCrimes by her own husband in the form of torture, humiliation, and the attempted murder of her unborn child, and later the loss of her senses after Zeref restored her human form (but only in appearance), it's really no wonder why she's completely incapable of empathy anymore. It turns out she still has some love for Erza, however, as she admits in the end with her at her mercy that she couldn't kill her any more than she could all those years ago.
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: A DoubleSubversion. When she encounters Erza for the first time since her birth, Irene simply notes that she considers her daughter worthless and threw her away like she was nothing. After experiencing a MomentOfLucidity, however, Irene remembers that after being DrivenToVillainy by her hardships and attempting to take over her unborn daughter's body, Irene couldn't go through with it and realized she was a danger to her own child, thus leaving her in a village before she would tempt herself with harming her child again.
* DarkActionGirl: Not only does Irene deliver a nasty CurbStompBattle to Fiore's entire royal guard and treat Erza's attacks like child's play, but she is also the first to go toe to toe with Acnologia and walk away unscathed.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Perhaps one of the most messed up backstories in the series. She inadvertently doomed an entire race she wanted to help protect by creating Dragon Slayer magic; gradually succumbed to the horrific side effect of turning into a dragon herself; was ostracized and tortured by her very own husband for fear she would become another Acnologia; spent centuries unable to give birth to her human baby, who remained in complete stasis within her womb; and was unable to adjust to human sensations such as taste and sleep after Zeref gifted her with a new human body, which finally ended with her being pushed over the DespairEventHorizon and pulling a FaceHeelTurn.
* DeathEqualsRedemption: [[spoiler:When Selene identifies Irene's persona eavesdropping, Irene reveals that she is an enchantress and the first Dragon Slayer, who can remove the deadly curse of dragon's wounds on Selene and transfer it to herself. In turn, Irene's spirit will fade, but before her existence disappears, Selene can send her to a world without magic where she can live anew without the side effects of dragonification. Irene leaves Wendy's mind, finds true peace as her old existence ends, then starts over with a clean slate and becomes one with a brand new life: Mystogan and Erza Knightwalker's baby, Irene.]]
* DespairEventHorizon: In her backstory, Irene completely loses it when Zeref gifts her with her human form and she is unable to adjust to the human sensations she used to have.
* TheDreaded: Similar to August, she is known as the "[[RedBaron Scarlet Scourge]]" and feared among her own companions.
* DrivenToMadness: Her DarkAndTroubledPast not only took away her compassion and empathy, but also her sanity, which is one of the factors for her FaceHeelTurn.
* DrivenToSuicide: Despite her efforts in trying to make Erza suffer, Irene commits suicide after realizing how much she loved her towards the end of their battle. [[spoiler:By the time of ''100 Years Quest'', it turns out that she actually transferred her consciousness into Wendy's body and remained dormant until Wendy used her power. She makes it clear that she's content to be a SpiritAdvisor until she can find a new body.]]
* DrivenToVillainy: Irene was once a beloved queen whose own machinations led to her being cursed to live as a dragon for over 400 years, which in turn led to her enduring her husband's ColdBloodedTorture on her. Being driven insane by SenseLossSadness after Zeref helped her regain a humanoid form cemented her FaceHeelTurn.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Her closest friend throughout her entire life was her old advisor, Belserion, whose name she adopted as her own when he sacrificed himself for her. Also, no matter how much she called Erza trash and useless, she still loves her daughter and chooses to take her own life when she finally has her at her mercy.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: After losing Wendy's body, she rants they could never understand the pain she went through in her life. Erza shoots back all the hardships she had to go through before joining Fairy Tail (being made kidnapped from her village, made a slave, losing an eye via torture, seeing her best friend/love interest go evil all of a sudden and nearly kill her, etc.), which actually shocks Irene for a bit, before she drops the subject altogether as she resumes her attack.
* EvilCounterpart:
** To her daughter, Erza. Not only are both the strongest female fighters on their respective sides, but both were regarded as "queens" at some point in their lives (Irene was once the actual Queen of the Dragons, while Erza is the figurative Queen of the Fairies); both adopted their surnames to commemorate some meaningful event (Irene to honor her fallen comrade, Belserion; Erza to cherish her friendship with Jellal, who admired her scarlet hair); and both had traumatic pasts that shaped who they are now. However, whereas Erza's hardships strengthened her appreciation for life and her resolve to protect those closest to her, Irene never moved on and wallowed in bitterness and misery.
** She is one for Grandeeney. Both are dragons who had daughters and sacrificed much for them. However, while Grandeeney selflessly gave up everything, including her own time, to protect Wendy from becoming a dragon, Irene began to selfishly consider her daughter as a vessel for ''herself''.
* EvilMatriarch: She's Erza's mother, and she also happens to be one of the Emperor's deadliest and most loyal enforcers. And just to make sure her daughter knows what a horrible mother she has, she gloats over how she dumped her in a random village to die and actively tries killing her simply because she thinks her child is a worthless piece of trash. It's ultimately subverted in the end when she realizes she left Erza because she couldn't bring herself to harm her daughter in the first place, since she knew she would no doubt continue to make the effort.
* EvilRedhead: She has vibrant scarlet hair just like Erza, though her allegiance and actions in the Alvarez Empire arc paint her in a far less noble light.
* FaceHeelTurn: Irene is initially a good, noble queen. Then, her invention of Dragon Slayer magic not only obliterates most of dragonkind, but it curses her for 400 years and she is subsequently isolated from the rest of the world. After gaining a new human body courtesy of Zeref and being unable to feel any human sensation, Irene goes insane to the point of joining the Alvarez Empire and trying to kill her daughter, Erza, when they first meet.
* FamilialBodySnatcher: She attempts to enchant her memories and personality onto the newborn Erza in an attempt to escape her dragonification-induced SenseLossSadness. She claims the attempt was a fluke because of their blood relation, but the fact is that she couldn't bring herself to do it and backed out.
* FateWorseThanDeath: After her Dragon Slayer magic cursed her to become a dragon, Irene is condemned to a life of psychological, emotional and physical pain.
* FemmeFatalons: She wears long gloves with fingers tipped with long, razor sharp nails meant to invoke this image.
* {{Foil}}:
** She contrasts completely with her male counterpart, August. Whereas August is committed to following his Emperor's orders right down to the letter, Irene is fickle and moves about however which way she wants. Conversely, Irene prefers to make her enemies suffer slowly and painfully, while August takes the swift and painless approach. The only area where they end up truly similar is that ultimately they realize they care too much about a loved one to hurt or kill them and instead [[SelfDisposingVillain choose to take their own lives]].
** Her DarkAndTroubledPast makes her one to Zeref. Both were once kind individuals but were terribly cursed through their altruistic acts, resulting in the hatred and fear of those around them, which ended up making driving them to villainy. But while Zeref stood to the sidelines to witness the evils of humanity, Irene tasted first-hand the cruelty that humans are capable of by enduring torture and humiliation at the hands of her own husband and people, which certainly explains why Irene became far more twisted and cruel than Zeref.
** She is one for Acnologia. Both are Dragon Slayers that eventually became corrupted and transformed into actual dragons. But while Acnologia quickly gave into his destructive impulses and discarded his humanity, Irene held onto the hope of becoming human again after 400 agonizing years. She was also the Dragon Queen who sought to protect the bond between dragons and humanity, while Acnologia earned the title of Dragon King after indiscriminately slaughtering most of the species.
* ForcedTransformation: She turns Princess Hisui into a mouse for her own amusement. [[EvilCannotComprehendGood Much to her shock]], her father King Toma, comforts his daughter and confirms that he still loved her to Irene. This notably causes the sorceress to lose her sadistic smile. Given her backstory, it's understandable why she has this reaction.
* GambitRoulette: In her bid to speed up the Ishgal/Alvarez war, Irene uses her World Reconstruction spell, Universe One, to reshape the entire country of Fiore and teleport its population to random locations. It's by complete happenstance that Spriggan winds up face-to-face with his now defenseless target as a result. For bonus points, Irene was previously forbidden from using this spell for its high degree of risk, and that she herself had never performed such a feat before, using it only as a last resort against Acnologia.
* GiantEyeOfDoom: One of her spells allows her to conjure a giant eye in the sky that allows her to see for miles through it.
* GoneHorriblyRight: She was the inventor of Dragon Slayer magic, which she developed to allow other humans to tip the Dragon Civil War in favor of the dragons who wished to co-exist with humanity. Unfortunately, she didn't account for the side effect that Dragon Slayers who used their magic too much would become dragons themselves, thereby personally giving rise to Acnologia and the subsequent extermination of the entire dragon race.
* GoMadFromTheIsolation: She spent 400 years in isolation after her Dragon Slayer magic caused her to transform into a dragon. By the time she got a new body from Zeref and joined the Alvarez Empire, it's obvious that Irene went completely insane.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: She has a scar on her stomach that runs parallel to navel along the right side of her abdomen. It's the result of her husband trying to cut open her belly to prove that she wasn't actually pregnant just before she completed her dragonification and turned on him.
* GrandTheftMe: She first attempted to enchant her own personality onto Erza as soon as she was out of the womb in a desperate effort to regain an actual human body, but it ended in failure. She later succeeds in doing the same to Wendy, but it doesn't last since Wendy winds up simultaneously taking over Irene's body, allowing her to switch themselves back.
* HeelRealization: After rambling on and on about how much she should have killed her daughter when she last had the chance, she flashes back to remember it was an act of love that kept her from doing so. This realization ultimately drives her to kill herself.
* HumansAreInsects: She specifically calls people "bugs to be crushed under her feet" especially if they're someone Alvarez wants to conquer. Since she was arrested and tortured by humans whose side she was once on, though, it's clear why she stopped caring about humanity.
* InstantExpert: {{Justified|Trope}} when she [[GrandTheftMe takes over Wendy's body]], as their magic is effectively identical since Wendy uses Enchantments and Dragon Slayer Magic, both of which Irene is an even greater master of even if the latter is technically a different school (Sky versus Sage) than her own expertise. What surprises Irene more is Wendy's buried potential as a mage allowing her to cast such powerful high-end spells right out the gate rather than any difficulty using her powers in the first place.
* {{Irony}}: [[spoiler:After her time as Wendy's SpiritAdvisor is over, Irene would end up reincarnating as the daughter of Erza Nightwalker, her daughter's Edolas counterpart.]]
* LadyOfBlackMagic: The most literal living example of the whole series. Irene is a beautiful, voluptuous woman dressed in a revealing witch outfit and has a composed and knowledgeable demeanor. She's also regarded as a [[TheArchmage High Enchanter]], having the magical power to [[{{Terraform}} alter]] landscapes and climates so much that she can create a gigantic fireball ([[WeatherManipulation or turning a snowy and cold climate into an extremely hot climate]]) and [[RealityWarper rewrite the geography]] of an entire country.
* LongestPregnancyEver: Her pregnancy with Erza lasted for ''400 years'', using magic to halt the growth of the fetus in her womb to prevent her from becoming a dragon like herself. She only gave birth when she decided to try and take over her child's body in an attempt to restore her own humanity.
* LovingParentCruelParent: Before she completely snapped, she was the Loving Parent to Ruing's Cruel Parent, caring about her then-unborn child enough to off her psycho husband when he threatened them both. In the present, however, those days are long behind her, though even at her worst, she at least ''did'' care about her child once upon her time before she went mad, whereas Rung never gave a shit about their unborn child at all.
* LukeIAmYourFather: Irene reveals herself to be Erza's long-lost mother when the two face each other on the battlefield. The only reason she bothers to divulge their family history is to see if her feelings towards Erza have changed, ultimately deciding that it hasn't.
* MadeOfIron: She takes attacks that otherwise wouldn't be humanly possibly to survive, making it clear where Erza's own MadeOfIron status comes from. For instance, such as a sword to the head that cleaves her hat in two, but all it does to her is make her bleed ''slightly''. When she changes to her dragon form, the true source of her durability, she continues to stand when Erza slashes her chest with a Dragon Slayer-enhanced sword strike (and even boasted that not even a blow powerful enough to destroy a meteor would be able to pierce her dragon scales alone before Wendy enchanted the strike to do just that).
* MagicEnhancement: She has the ability to greatly increase the magic power of other wizards, using it on Neinhart to make him invulnerable to other forms of magic, and later to turn Alvarez's soldiers into [[TheBerserker berserkers]]. Her dragon form increases her enhancement capacity to astronomical levels, stated by herself to be the unique trait of a Sage Dragon.
* MarriageOfConvenience: She was wed to a general from a neighboring country as part of a BureaucraticallyArrangedMarriage to solve a territorial dispute. Things got really ugly for their marriage when her husband attempted to execute her and her unborn daughter when she began transforming into a dragon, for which Irene killed him.
* MeteorSummoningAttack: Her ultimate spell, Deus Sema, sends a meteor hurtling towards Earth-land from space that puts Jellal's Sema to shame. She can only cast this spell in her dragon form, however.
* MissingMom: She is Erza's long-lost mother, who abandoned her daughter when she was just a baby.
* MomentOfLucidity: Before her FaceHeelTurn, Irene becomes lucid while attempting to take over the newborn Erza's body to become human again, stopping herself at the sight of her daughter's smile and leaving her at Rosemary Village to fend for herself, knowing she would no doubt make another attempt. Decades later, after completely losing her sanity and convincing herself that the possession was a failure from the start, she becomes lucid again when Erza's smile triggers a flashback to that earlier MomentOfLucidity, only this time, Irene takes the opportunity to stab herself.
* MorphicResonance: The scales of her dragon form are the same crimson shade as her hair.
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone: [[spoiler:While talking to Selene, Irene brings up her attempt to enchant herself on Erza's mind as a baby, but now had witnessed the magnitude of the woman Erza grew up to be, and realized trying to erase that soul was unforgivable. Irene starts to cry, because she feels the weight of that sin and genuine love toward her daughter. Her choice to end her existence as a Dragon Slayer wasn't so much suicide as it was a ploy to reset her life and become someone new and pure of heart. With Selene's help, she fully achieves her goal. Irene experiences a peaceful transition from one life to another.]]
* MythicalMotifs: Dragons, having been the creator of Dragon Slayer Magic which she made with the help of several draconic friends of hers. Bonus points for eventually ''becoming'' a dragon herself.
* NervesOfSteel: She definitely showed them off with her decision to confront Acnologia alone. While it was never her intention to defeat him, but to ensure he'd be transported far away via her Universe One, it still doesn't take away from the act.
* NoSell: She is able to shrug off any of Erza's attacks, including sword strikes that would otherwise kill a regular human being. This is likely because of her true nature as a dragon, which are impervious to most attacks except Dragon Slayer magic. It's also for this reason that Erza is only able to damage her once Wendy (a Dragon Slayer) starts enchanting her weapons with her magic.
* NotQuiteDead: [[spoiler: In ''100 Years Quest'', it's revealed that Wendy saved a portion of Irene's power to use as a trump card which she uses while fighting Nebaru. When she continues to have trouble, Irene makes her presence known, revealing to Wendy that along with the power, some of her consciousness was included as well. After she helps Wendy defeat Nebaru, Irene states she'll stay within Wendy's body till she can find one of her own to transfer her mind into.]]
* OffingTheOffspring: By the time she shows up towards the end of ''Fairy Tail'', Irene's greatest desire is to kill her daughter Erza. However, she loses her drive to do so upon realizing how much she loves Erza.
* OneWingedAngel: Once she fails to kill Erza one time too many, she assumes her true form as a dragon that can not only break all of Erza's bones with a single swipe of her claw but also exponentially boosts her already terrifying magic so she can ''drop a meteor on her''. Unfortunately for Irene, Erza is more than a match for a paltry meteor, and she's teamed up with a Dragon Slayer who can enchant her weapons to slice through her scales, [[ClippedWingAngel ultimately making the transformation moot]].
* OnlyMostlyDead: [[spoiler:Irene does not actually kill herself. She liberates her existence from her hellish torment inside a body suffering from complete Dragon Seed infestation. By the time of ''100 Years Quest'', she lingers inside Wendy through enchantment and is eagerly awaiting a chance to migrate into a new body that is hers and hers alone and not twisted by Dragon Slayer corruption.]]
* PetitePride: PlayedForLaughs. After she takes control of Wendy's body, she finds her small chest cute.
* PsychopathicWomanchild: She acts like a stubborn brat when August tries to order her around. During her VillainousBreakdown, she acts like an insane woman while trying to kill Erza and Wendy and screaming how "unfair" it is that an immunization to dragonification was discovered after she had already fully transformed.
* RealityWarper:
** Her Universe One spell, combined with enough magic power to surround at least one whole region, gives her the ability to modify everything according to her will and to teleport every living being to a different position from the one they was in. By doing so, Irene not only drastically altered the geography of Fiore and scattered all the enemy troops in various places while she brought Zeref straight to Fairy Tail's guild, but she also to able to make disappear for quite a few chapters Acnologia and, if unintentionally, save Gajeel from certain death.
** Her abilities as a High Enchantress allow her to modify all that she has enchanted according to her wishes, such as [[CreatingLife turning two simple swords into two living human beings]].
* RedBaron: She is known as the "Scarlet Scourge" for being [[EvilRedhead an unspeakably powerful and ruthless redhead]].
* RedIsViolent: Has the same prominent crimson hair as her daughter, and beneath her affable exterior is rather cruel after [[SanitySlippage 400 years of isolation eroded her sanity]].
* SanitySlippage: By the time of her first appearance, Irene's 400-year-long isolation after being cursed by her own Dragon Slayer magic has clearly taken a toll on her sanity.
* ScaledUp: An accidental and deconstructed example. As the inventor of Dragon Slayer magic, she was amongst the first to experience the downside of this magic. While she can use Transformation magic to return to her human form, she still retains the senses of her dragon form, which are largely incompatible with the human body.
* SelfDisposingVillain: Despite being the only one left standing in her fight with Erza and Wendy, she runs herself through with Erza's sword when she is reminded by Erza's smile that she never truly wanted to kill her in the first place.
* SenseLossSadness: Her experiences sum up precisely why turning into a dragon, even with Acnologia taken out of the equation, is something that shouldn't be treated as an aspiring NextTierPowerUp for Dragon Slayers. When '''Zeref''' gave her a human visage after she was trapped in the body of a dragon, she found out that she could no longer taste food and was kept awake by agonizing chills and itching sensations. This implies that not even transformation magic by ''one of the most powerful wizards in the setting can turn a Dragon Slayer truly back to normal''. This, after wishing for a human body for 400 years after all the prejudice she faced, is what finally drove her to the DespairEventHorizon.
* SharingABody: In ''100 Years Quest'', [[spoiler:it's revealed Irene's personality is still around, having taken up residence within Wendy's body after her own body's death. However, she makes it clear that she has no interest in stealing Wendy's body again and is content simply being a SpiritAdvisor until a better and more compatible body for her to claim as her own comes around.]]
* SlasherSmile: Whenever she's being particularly twisted, her face stretches into a psychotic sneer. Her most terrifying by far would be when she decides that if her human appearance doesn't translate to being human, she'll simply steal her unborn daughter's body despite having given up so much to keep her alive.
* TheSociopath: She shows all the signs: a blatant disregard for authority, reckless and impulsive behavior, an inability to empathize with others, outright cruelty, narcissism, and a tendency to lose her cool the moment things stop going her way. It's ultimately subverted in regards to Erza, deprecating herself for choosing to kill herself over her lingering love for her daughter, despite being Alvarez's strongest woman.
* StartOfDarkness: She had a pretty rough life especially after being cursed to become a dragon for over 400 years, but being unable to feel any sensations after being given a new human visage seemed to be the last straw for her.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Continuing the trend set by Brandish and [=DiMaria=], Irene's outfit has the trifecta of midriff-barring, a top with a massive CleavageWindow, and long-legged boots. The bottom half of her outfit hardly covers the tops of her thighs.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: It should come as no shock that Irene is Erza's mother, seeing how they look practically identical. Flashbacks of her as a younger woman show them to be downright indistinguishable.
* SuperEmpowering: Her High Enchant magic allows her the ability to manipulate anything whatever way she wants. This ranges from giving a wooden stick the strength to break a steel sword, to giving human form to completely inanimate objects to serve as her minions, to compressing the ''entire'' Kingdom of Fiore into 1/20 of its original size and mass-teleporting everyone randomly.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: Rather than just kill Erza outright, Irene decides to turn into a dragon, break Erza's bones, and drop a meteor on her along with the rest of the country. She's [[ThisCannotBe utterly gobsmacked]] when Erza manages to shatter the meteor anyways.
* ThickerThanWater: A zig-zagged example. In the past, her full transformation into a dragon was triggered when her husband tried killing the unborn Erza, and she endured three years of torture and humiliation all to keep her safe. She also spent 400 years as a dragon halting her growth in her womb so as to keep her from being born as a monster. It was only when she went insane did she finally stop caring, abandoning her and leaving her for dead, to the point where she immediately orders her death when she is confirmed to be alive. However, when she attempts to finish Erza off, her motherly instinct results in Irene stabbing herself with her own sword.
* TookALevelInJerkass: Once a noble and kind individual, she slipped down the path of being a jerk when she is transformed into a dragon thanks to her own machinations, brutally tortured and isolated for many years, and finally being driven insane when she was given a new body by Zeref.
* TookALevelInKindness: [[spoiler:In ''100 Years Quest'', her personality inside of Wendy is much kinder and far more playful, serving as an honest SpiritAdvisor to her and at worst acting as TheGadfly by hijacking Wendy's mouth to agree to Haku's [[WackyMarriageProposal proposal of fighting for a right to take Wendy out for a date]].]]
* TragicKeepsake: Similar to Erza, "Belserion" isn't her actual surname. Rather, it was the name of her old advisor and closest friend, who died to protect her. Said advisor was also a dragon.
* TragicVillain: She began as a kind and noble queen who desired peace between humans and dragons by inventing Dragon Slayer magic. Instead, her actions ultimately destroyed the entire dragon race, and left her with a horrible curse that not only turned her into a bitter and deranged woman, but also made her despise her own daughter, the only one to keep her sane right up until her birth. What's worse is that deep down, she still truly loves her daughter, but her mind was so warped that she could only remember how Erza dashed her only hope for reclaiming a normal life.
* TraumaCongaLine: After inventing Dragon Slayer magic, she is cursed to become a dragon for eternity, gets isolated from human society, is tortured by her husband for years, and ultimately abandons Erza shortly after giving birth. After that, it's no surprise she crossed the DespairEventHorizon.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: [[spoiler:In ''100 Years Quest'', while Irene is right to push Wendy in taking him out quickly, it's clear she doesn't view [[CheerfulChild Haku]] as a true threat given how [[VillainousCrush they're gushing over Wendy's cuteness]] along with their general kiddy attitude and how they just nullified their ToyTransmutation powers. Haku weathers the storm of Wendy's attacks and then suddenly [[LetsGetDangerous stops playing around]], dashing past them at ''light speed'' and turning Irene into a helpless doll to emphasize their magic also works on spirits/personas.]]
* VillainousBreakdown: After discovering that Wendy managed to avoid turning into a dragon because Grandeeney was sealed within her body, Irene loses it, realizing her centuries of torment while living in a dragon's body could have been avoided. Her rage gradually builds over the course of her battle with Erza and Wendy, from taking over Wendy's body in the middle of a psychotic fit to turning into a dragon and attempting to crush Erza under a meteor when she is forced back into her old body moments later.
* {{Weredragon}}: She is a [[WasOnceAMan formerly human]] Dragon Slayer whose overuse of her magic transformed her into a dragon. Her human form is the result of transformation magic that Zeref cast on her, but is still a dragon underneath her appearance, and can shift between both forms at will.
* WhatHaveIBecome: She had this reaction when she turned into a dragon. She was overjoyed when Zeref restored her human form, but then she realized [[SenseLossSadness she still lacked her human senses]], serving as a constant reminder that she is still a dragon who only looks like a human.
* WhenSheSmiles: She gives a genuine, peaceful smile as opposed to a cruel and twisted sneer as she stabs herself, admitting that in the end, she couldn't kill her daughter because she still loves her.
* WhiteAndRedAndEerieAllOver: Her dragon form has prominent red and white colouring, and she uses it to try and finish off her fight with Erza and Wendy.
* WithGreatPowerComesGreatInsanity: As per her flashbacks, one of the biggest drawbacks in the early application of Dragon Slayer magic is that the human body couldn't handle the strain, and most of those who used it went completely nuts. As the first and most proficient user, she not only became a dragon, but became completely sociopathic, although in her case it was partially due to the torture and humiliation she endured, plus the realization she would never be human again, that [[DespairEventHorizon sent her off the edge]].
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: She was once just a noble and righteous queen. Then, she lost everyone and everything she loved [[TragicVillain due to her own actions]] which caused her to become a dragon for 400 years. She was then given a human body by Zeref, which had side effects that drove her insane.
* WorldsStrongestWoman: She is said to be the only one among the 12 who can rival August, previously thought to be the single most powerful of them all. Then she shows it by going toe-to-toe with Acnologia and walking away completely unscathed, and later being able to completely outmatch Erza both magically and physically (Erza receiving both fighting and magical support from Wendy at best only forces Irene to take the fight seriously), only losing directly and intentionally by her own hand. [[spoiler:In ''100 Years Quest'', Wendy tapping into just Irene's ''residual power'' still residing in her body is enough to match and overpower Nebaru, a Fifth Generation Dragon Slayer using his own Dragon Force that overwhelmed Wendy's natural Dragon Force just minutes prior.]]

The self-professed son of Zeref who desperately longs to gain his father's approval by killing Natsu, the only family member Zeref ever loved. In truth, he is an Etherious created as a prototype for E.N.D.; although he bears Zeref and Natsu's family name, it is nothing more than a label his "father" gave him. With his ability to amplify the three cardinal desires of pleasure, food, and slumber that all human beings share, Larcade stands alongside August and Irene as one of the most formidable of the Spriggan 12.
----
* TheAce: Alongside August and Irene, he is one of the three strongest members of the Spriggan 12 and is also Spriggan's secret weapon against Acnologia. He is not TheArchmage like the other two though, with his strength coming from the ridiculously overpowered nature of his magic.
* AffablyEvil: He holds no grudge to his enemies, simply sees killing them as his job and killing them with Pleasure Magic as a way of mercy. He also saves Dimaria from being recaptured at one point.
* AlasPoorVillain: He dies pitifully at the hands of his own "father", to whom he was completely loyal. Naturally, Natsu is truly pissed by this.
* ArtificialFamilyMember: He's not actually Zeref's son, but a demon he created. Larcade sincerely views and loves Zeref as his father, but unfortunately for him (or fortunately, given the latter's death curse) Zeref doesn't return the sentiment.
* BadassPreacher: The way he talks and how he has his hands positioned reminds one of a Buddhist priest. Spriggan also states he has the potential to defeat Acnologia thanks to the nature of his magic.
* BareHandedBladeBlock: He can block Kagura's Fugutaiten with a single finger. Note that he does this while the sword is unsheathed, where it has the power to [[AbsurdlySharpBlade lop the hilltop he was sitting on clean off the earth]].
* BlueAndOrangeMorality: He's a serene, religious man who prays for the souls of his enemies and goes out of his way to ensure their death are completely painless ([[{{Orgasmatron}} the exact opposite]], in fact), right before mercilessly slaughtering them. He's completely emotionless, but is fiercely loyal to his father to the point where his only real sense of morality is, "Is this what the Emperor wants?"
* BoringButPractical: Compared to the other Spriggan, his powers aren't as flashy and due to its very nature, can seem downright mellow. And he doesn't openly display the sheer strength, speed, and destructive feats of his two peers August and Irene. But being a ManOfKryptonite who can overload anyone who's had sex is so effective that he can drop entire armies of wizards and even stronger people than himself like Irene. And if for some reason, his pleasure magic doesn't work, he can still drop you with his sleep or hunger magic because even people who can resist his {{Orgasmatron}} powers will ''still'' feel the pangs of hunger or the need for sleep.
* CainAndAbel: In a way, Larcade is also Natsu's brother, who was reborn as a demon Zeref's power, making their uncle/nephew contention this. Quite literally so, since Larcade is a demon himself.
* CreepyCrosses: He has a cross symbol right across his forehead and a large metal one on his back, further reinforcing his religious theme while actually being an Etherious demon.
* CripplingOverspecialization: Averted, at least in regards to Pleasure and R.I.P. In addition to their powerful, hands off primary function, they can be used for more straightforward offense, Pleasure forming tentacles and blades of light while R.I.P can function as simple white magic blasts, allowing him to defend himself directly if needed (on top of his skill in melee combat).
* CrossAttack: He uses a large metal cross as a weapon to bludgeon and impale his foes, even though he dresses like a Buddhist monk and the cross is a Christian holy symbol.
* CurbStompBattle: His fight with Kagura ends with him not getting a scratch after [[BareHandedBladeBlock blocking her Fugutaiten with one finger]], and then cutting out a chunk of her torso with the other. He then goes in for the kill with Yukino for good measure.
* DiedHappilyEverAfter: [[spoiler:His child self, along with a young August, appear with a married Zeref and Mavis, as well as Igneel, in Natsu's Beta Heaven, as the couple's sons. Larcade now gets the unconditional affection of Zeref and the status of being his actual son instead of an experiment.]]
* ElementalRockPaperScissors: Sting holds this in Larcade's face not only by being totally immune to his light magic, but also by absorbing Rogue's shadow magic, which is Larcade's weakness.
* EvilCounterpart:
** To Natsu. Natsu is Zeref's brother, whereas Larcade believes he is is Zeref's son, and both are Etherious. Both are unwaveringly loyal to their comrades--Natsu to his guild and Igneel, Larcade to his country and Zeref--and both have a habit of behaving unprofessionally (Larcade not attending any of the Spriggan 12 meetings, and Natsu being, well, [[DestructiveHero Natsu]]). However, while Natsu will not break Fairy Tail's ThouShaltNotKill rule, Larcade will do so without question if that's what Zeref wants.
** To Sting. Both of them have a complicated opinion on Natsu, with Sting originally seeing Natsu as a rival while Larcade hates him because Zeref gives Natsu so much more attention than himself. However, Sting eventually gets out of this habit and comes to see Natsu as a friend and ally, while Lacarde continues to hate Natsu and maintains a StepfordSmiler attitude. In addition, their powers are both light-themed, but whereas Sting's powers are all about direct combat, Lacarde's are about manipulating someone's desires in favor of actually fighting.
* EvilNephew: Being Zeref's son (or at least his creation) makes Natsu his uncle. Because Zeref gave Natsu all of his love and attention while he himself was treated as little more than a tool of war, Larcade despises Natsu greatly.
* EvilKnockoff: Of Natsu, or more specifically E.N.D.; Larcade is actually a test experiment of Natsu, and was given the "Dragneel" name because he was the closest one to the genuine article.
* ForcedSleep: His ultimate spell, R.I.P. (Rest in Peace), forces his target to become drowsy to the point that they will never wake up again once their eyes close.
* FriendOrFoe: His, for lack of a better word, orgasmic magic doesn't discriminate from friend or foe when not focused on a specific target, affecting Irene and Zeref as well. Hence why he can't take out Fairy Tail all at once without risk of harming his strongest allies.
* GoldAndWhiteAreDivine: His main colours are white and gold, on top of looking like a priest.
* GoldColoredSuperiority: Fitting for [[LightIsNotGood a wielder of white magic]], he has gold mixed in with his clothing and is considered among the three strongest members of the incredibly formidable Spriggan 12.
* GreenEyedMonster: While Larcade loves his father, he feels nothing but jealous rage towards his uncle, who received all of Spriggan's affection.
* InterplayOfSexAndViolence: The BrownNote nature of his magic, the expressions on the faces of his victims, and the way he talks about "pleasure" get dangerously close to this at several points. He shows absolutely no signs of being a pervert himself, but taken out of context, his quotes about his magic wouldn't sound out of place in straight up eroge.
* LightEmUp: He can form blades of light for pure offense purposes should his usual magic not be enough to face off against a foe.
* LightIsNotGood: He deals with using [[LightEmUp light magic]] and has the appearance and mannerisms of a Buddhist priest, but he is also viciously cruel and uses his powers to inflict unspeakable suffering on his enemies. There's also the fact that he's actually a demon from the Book of Zeref.
* ManOfKryptonite: He's this to anyone who's had sex, with his {{Orgasmatron}} powers affecting anyone in his immediate area, overloading them with pleasure until it can overwhelm and kill them.
* MeatOVision: He can inflict this on his opponents, making them so utterly starved that they can't help but see their own allies as irresistible food, [[HorrorHunger leaving them to devour each other to death]].
* NoBodyLeftBehind: Zeref kills Larcade by vaporizing him without a trace. Because no-one else besides Natsu was there to witness Larcade's death, people in the empire assume [[NeverFoundTheBody he's still alive somewhere]].
* OneWingedAngel: In ''Fairy Tail Goku • Mahō Ranbu'', it's revealed Larcade has a full Etherious form that turns him into [[https://i.imgur.com/ytX0Uqm.jpg an imposing satyr.]]
* {{Orgasmatron}}: His magic causes his opponents to feel copious amounts of pleasure, all but stated to be [[TheImmodestOrgasm the]] inappropriate [[TheGruntingOrgasm kind]], and ''very'' heavily implied to only affect those who've [[VirginityFlag sampled such pleasures]], however this is only true of the base form that effects a wide area. If he bothers to concentrate his power on one person, he can effectively cause to induce a similar effect on someone whether they've "tasted the forbidden fruit" or not. This effectively overloads their bodies and minds, [[OutWithABang causing them to die]].
* OverlordJr: Subverted. He calls himself the son of Emperor Spriggan, a.k.a Zeref, until he's revealed to be a demon and not his son in any human sense of the word.
* RedHerring: It turns out that August is Zeref's real son, and that Larcade is merely a delusional Etherious who takes the whole "born from Zeref" thing a little too seriously. It doesn't help that he was given the Dragneel name for no other reason than the fact that he was closest Zeref came to perfecting Natsu's resurrection as a demon.
* RedBaron: He is known as the "White Dragneel" as he was given the surname and he wields light-based magical abilities.
* StepfordSmiler: While he's almost always smiling, he rarely displays any true emotion unless it involves his glee at serving Zeref.
* TomatoInTheMirror: It's strongly implied by his devastated reaction to Zeref calling him an Etherious made as a prototype for Natsu that Larcade wasn't aware he isn't actually Zeref's son beforehand.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: In his eyes, any of the enemies who aren't a member of Fairy Tail are just a "small fry". He is thus completely confident going up against Sting, Rogue and Kagura and ends up being one of the few Spriggan 12 to be defeated with ''[[LaserGuidedKarma no aid]]'' from a Fairy Tail member, to his disbelief (though to be fair, if Sting and Rogue hadn't possessed the two forms of magic that counter his ability, he likely would've won without a problem).
* VillainousBSOD: Despite not being Zeref's biological son, he completely feels like one and tries to be recognized as such by Zeref. Once he interferes in Zeref's and Natsu's battle, the former blows a hole through him, then kicks him while he's down, saying he has no son, and that he's only an Etherious meant to resemble Natsu. Larcade visibly breaks down in tears shortly before Zeref blasts him to oblivion.
* VirginityFlag: The way his powers (normally) work allow him to basically reveal who in the story has had sex (because they are affected by them) and who hasn't. To wit, we know that Zeref, Mavis, Irene, Laxus, Gildarts, Rogue, Minerva, Sorano, Alzack, Bisca, some random people and probably Gajeel and Levy are not virgins, while Team Natsu, Juvia, Jellal, Cana, Yukino, Sting, Kagura, Romeo, Warren, August, and some others, are.
* WalkingSpoiler: He is the son of another WalkingSpoiler whose identity gives away all there is to know about Larcade's relationships. Well, [[TomatoInTheMirror most of it, anyway]].
* WellDoneSonGuy: He is loyal to the Emperor only because he desires the love and attention he never received from him.
* WhatIsThisThingYouCallLove: Having never been loved by his "father", he has no idea what love actually is. However, he associates it with pleasure, and he considers granting someone a peaceful, painless death to be an act of love.

The Emperor's chief of staff, who doesn't tolerate his allies' insubordination. Invel uses the purest form of ice and snow magic, capable of freezing anything and everything around him in an instant, including his enemies' minds.
----
* AboveGoodAndEvil: As far as he's concerned, light and dark magic are irrelevant to the concept of good and evil. He's also very well aware that his Emperor is the deadly Black Wizard Zeref well-learned in the dark arts.
* BadassLongcoat: He wears a closed jacket [[BadassInANiceSuit over a suit and tie]] with a DualityMotif.
* ClippedWingAngel: His trump card, [[ElementalArmor True-Ice Kamui]], is an armored suit of ice that freezes everything it touches, [[MyKungFuIsStrongerThanYours including those who are otherwise immune to the cold and other kinds of ice]]. Unfortunately for him, Gray [[HoistByHisOwnPetard can use Ice-Make to manipulate the armor's ice for his own use]].
* DragonWithAnAgenda: Invel's agenda is not so much one that differs from the Emperor's, but one to keep him focused on his goal of acquiring Fairy Heart, rather than his other goal of seeking death. This means removing Natsu--the only one capable of killing Zeref, which Zeref himself wholeheartedly expects--as an obstacle to his Emperor's plans.
* EarlyBirdCameo: He makes a brief appearance in TheStinger of ''Anime/FairyTailDragonCry'', set before the Alvarez Empire arc.
* EvilCounterpart: To Gray. Both of them are Ice Magic users, both have unflinching loyalties to their comrades and they both have goals to defeat E.N.D., however Invel knew that Natsu is E.N.D. While Gray didn’t know that until Invel told him the truth.
* FourEyesZeroSoul: He wears glasses, and is a particularly brutal and sociopathic individual.
* FourStarBadass: He's Spriggan's chief of staff and primary tactician, as well as the one who commands the bulk of Alvarez's armies.
* HeroKiller: He gets Gray and Juvia to attempt to kill each other with his MindRape abilities, which results in Juvia coming narrowly close to dying in order to save Gray's life.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Ultimately the reason why he was defeated. Once he pulled out his [[ElementalArmor trump card move]], not even Gray running on UnstoppableRage could beat him head on. So Grey thought smarter and used his Ice-Make to take control of Invel's very ice and defeat him with that.
* {{Hypocrite}}: He derides Gray's Ice-Make Magic that can mold ice into objects yet his Ice Slave and Ice Lock (a collar and chains made of ice) and his trump card, True-Ice Kamui (a suit of armor made of ice) do exactly that.
* AnIcePerson: He is a self-described "true" ice wizard, as his magic can freeze literally anything: entire cities, Natsu's flames, and [[MindRape thoughts]]. His power is so great that Gray, who has developed a natural resistance to cold as part of his training, finds himself shivering from Invel's chill.
* KarmaHoudiniWarranty: While he does get his face pounded in something fierce by Gray for his actions, Invel otherwise gets away scot-free with arranging the deathmatch between Natsu/E.N.D. and Gray and nearly destroying their friendship, shipping out with the rest of his comrades from the Alvarez Empire. By the time of ''100 Years Quest'', he's punished and imprisoned alongside Neinhart for plotting another war after Alvarez made peace.
* LetsYouAndHimFight: Using his Ice Lock, he [[BrainwashedAndCrazy brainwashes]] Gray into [[StuffedInTheFridge trying to kill Juvia]], all to direct him in an UnstoppableRage against E.N.D. When that fails, he just tells Gray that Natsu is E.N.D. outright, which does the trick.
* MindRape: His Ice Slave and Ice Lock spells creates a neck chain that completely "freezes" the wearer's mind and turns them into an obedient slave. This includes someone with genius-level intellect like Mavis, who can't think straight while chained up, no matter how hard she tries.
* MyKungFuIsStrongerThanYours: He considers all forms of ice magic, especially Gray's Ice Make, to be lesser, derivative forms of his own. He has a completely different stance on Gray's Ice Demon Slayer magic, though, which Invel acknowledges to be extremely potent and beyond what he is capable of.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: He wastes no time freezing his opponents in their tracks whenever he gets a chance. The only reason he fights Gray is because he's the only one immune to his cold, generously speaking.
* NumberTwo: Though far from the Emperor's strongest henchman, he stands by his master's side at all times, helps keep the rest of the 12 in check, and serves as his closest aide and counsel. He also knows that the Emperor is Zeref with all that entails.
* PersonalityPowers: He is proficient in ice magic, and he is incredibly stoic, stern, and calculating.
* PutOnAPrisonBus: In ''100 Years Quest'', he and Neinhart are sent to jail for plotting another war.
* RedBaron: He's known as the "Winter General" because of his mastery of pure Ice Magic and he serves as the chief of staff commanding the armies of Alvarez.
* ReverseArmfold: His arms are always in this position whenever he isn't using his magic.
* TheStoic: He carries out all of his orders in a calm and collected manner. The only time he [[NotSoStoic breaks this calm]] is when [[OhCrap he realizes he pushed Gray too far]] by having Juvia killed.
* StoicSpectacles: His glasses help emphasize his icy cold disposition. Gray breaks them to pieces when punching Invel in the face.
* {{Ubermensch}}: Bordering on TheSociopath, he seems completely incapable of understanding why Juvia and Gray would rather commit suicide than die fighting one another while under the effects of his magic, calling it "irrational". His views on darkness are rather Nietzschean, and as far as he's concerned, "good" and "evil" never enter the equation in the Alvarez-Ishgal war; he knows full well who Spriggan is, and he doesn't care one bit.
* UndyingLoyalty: He is unflinchingly loyal to the Emperor. Not only does he not care one bit about Spriggan's true identity as Zeref, but he's willing to defy Zeref's wish to be killed by Natsu if it means removing an obstacle to the complete subjugation of Ishgal.
* {{Warhawk}}: As revealed in ''100 Years Quest'', he schemed with Neinhart to start another war with Ishgal after Alvarez made peace, and was imprisoned for it.
* WeatherManipulation: Invel's magic basically turns Magnolia into the GrimUpNorth, with a blizzard raging throughout the city and Fairy Tail's guild hall surrounded on all sides by glaciers.

[[folder:Brandish μ]]
!!"Nation Destroyer" Brandish μ
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/ManamiNumakura (Japanese), Creator/AmberLeeConnors (English)
[[quoteright:250:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/brandish_ft_2018.png]]

A young woman whose magic, Command T, allows her to alter the size, shape, and mass of any person or object. However, she couldn't care less about her duties and prefers to avoid meaningless conflicts whenever she can. For fifteen years, Brandish has sought to avenge the death of her mother, Grammi, who was apparently killed by Layla Heartfilia. After learning the truth, however, she forms an unlikely friendship with Layla's daughter, Lucy, that challenges Brandish's loyalty to her country.
----
* AffablyEvil: While she serves TheEmpire and is somewhat demanding and indifferent, she has a very calm and well-mannered demeanor. She hates troublesome affairs and thus tries to settle things without conflict, preferring to use her power to intimidate rather than destroy. It's this level of approachability that allows Lucy to befriend with her once she realizes the truth about Grammi's death.
* AntiVillain: While she may harshly treat her subordinates, she's easily the most sympathetic member of the 12. She befriends Lucy, saves Natsu and Mirajane's lives, and provides valuable intel to Fairy Tail after realizing how wrong her misguided deeds were in trying to avenge her mother. When all is said and done, her only real antagonism towards Fairy Tail stems from the fact that [[MyCountryRightOrWrong she's a proud citizen of Alvarez]] and has no desire to betray the country she calls home.
* ApologeticAttacker: She tearfully apologizes as she tries killing Lucy so she can avenge Grammi's death, just before Aquarius sets the record straight.
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: She can turn into a giant version of herself to attack her enemies.
* BadBoss: She casually shrinks Marin down to size to make things "even" with Fairy Tail after the latter hurt one of them, then makes him paint her toenails at his minuscule size. It's implied that she has done this for a while, too, which comes back to bite her when he tries to strangle her to death while her magic is sealed.
* BadassLongcoat: She's one of the powerful Spriggan 12 mages and wears a golden coat with purple flower patterns.
* BigDamnHeroes:
** She pulls one in ''100 Years Quest'' when she rescues Gray from Skullion's attacks by shrinking the former down to the size of Lucy's hand, and later perching Diabolos's ship atop a stone-turned-hill to help Fairy Tail.
** She pulls another one in Draseal [[spoiler:where she offers to use her power to super-size Gajeel so he can fight [[{{Kaiju}} Aldoron]] on equal footing.]]
* BrainwashedAndCrazy: A very foolish move Mest orchestrated is to tamper with Brandish's mind so that she is suddenly overcome with a desire to murder August with a knife when the plan was to negotiate peaceful resolution to a war. This not only fails, it causes Brandish to cry in resistance - and August, the strongest of all the Spriggan 12, to switch from a reasonable and passive mindset, to utterly ruthless and unwavering antagonism to all of Ishgal.
* BrilliantButLazy: She wields the kind of power that can bring entire nations to their knees and she knows this, which is why she almost never takes fights seriously and prefers using her powers to intimidate her opposition into giving up.
* BrokenBird: She is hung up over Grammi's death to the point where she becomes a PersonOfMassDestruction.
* BrokenTears: Brandish sheds tears after she witnesses Zoldio killing Grammi first-hand, thus vindicating Layla's involvement.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: She's more concerned about getting ice cream than catching a spy, openly complains to the Emperor's face about having to do her job, and wanted to take a bath (in an enemy's house, no less) in the middle of a warzone. She also has the moniker of "[[RedBaron Nation Destroyer]]" for a good reason.
* TheBusCameBack: Brandish makes a return in ''100 Years Quest'', where she bumps into Lucy as they're both searching for Aquarius's reformed key.
* CatchPhrase: She often quips, "What a pain."
* ChainedByFashion: The straps of her bikini top are made of chains, and connected to the front of what looks like a SlaveCollar.
* ConflictingLoyalty: While Brandish gets over her RoaringRampageOfRevenge, she's still loyal to Alvarez and believes that their victory is assured, but cares enough about Lucy and her closest friends to not want them to fight a battle they have no hope of winning. Unfortunately for her, this makes her a CategoryTraitor in her comrades' eyes.
* DarkActionGirl: Her first battle ended because of her [[WorfHadTheFlu hay fever]]. In normal conditions, she turns out to be a quite capable fighter, to the point she can fight Lucy in an evenly-matched duel and gain the upper-hand.
* DissonantSerenity: She grows an entire island into a mountain, and then shrinks it into a stepping stone, all with the same, bored expression as she usually wears.
* DrivenToVillainy: Grammi inadvertently caused Layla's death, which then caused an insane Zoldio to kill her. Unfortunately, Brandish came to the obvious conclusion that Layla murdered Grammi, and that was that.
* EarlyBirdCameo: She makes a brief appearance in TheStinger of ''Anime/FairyTailDragonCry'', set before the Alvarez Empire arc.
* EmeraldPower: Has obvious green hair and all the power you'd expect from a member of the Spriggan 12.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: Brandish asks Marin how long he is planning to fool around during his battle against Fairy Tail. Then, she buys a bowl of mango gelato, thus brushing off her attempts to search for a spy.
* EvenBadWomenLoveTheirMamas: She deeply loved her mother Grammi as a child. When she is killed, Brandish wrongly assumes that Layla is the one responsible, causing her to enact a RoaringRampageOfRevenge upon meeting Lucy. It only takes Aquarius interfering with her fight with Lucy to make her realize the truth of what really happened between Grammi and Layla.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: She can shrink severe wounds and magic tumors to minuscule size, or enlarge them to incapacitate her enemies, but is outright disturbed when [=DiMaria=] suggests she could make her enemies' organs grow out of control and explode out of their bodies to kill them.
* EvilCounterpart: To Lucy. Both are the daughters of deceased celestial spirit wizards and both have a connection to Aquarius. But while Lucy became a celestial spirit wizard like her mother, Brandish did not as she uses a different type of magic. Brandish tries to avenge Grammi's death upon realizing that Lucy is Layla's daughter, at least until Aquarius tells her the truth about what really happened. After the Alvarez Empire's defeat, Brandish has a HeelFaceTurn and develops a FriendlyRivalry with Lucy.
* FriendlyEnemy: Despite befriending Lucy after realizing her misguided deeds to avenge Grammi's death, Brandish doesn't consider the possibility about being true friends since they are on opposing sides in a war, and she doesn't intend to betray her homeland. She eventually leaves the war altogether on friendly terms with Fairy Tail, despite being convinced they will lose in the end.
* FriendlyRivalry: She develops one with Lucy after they reunite in ''100 Years Quest'', since they are no longer on opposing sides, but are both driven to be the first to find Aquarius's key.
* FurAndLoathing: Her BadassLongcoat has purple fur around the collar. She isn't exactly evil, but she's still an antagonist known as the "Nation Destroyer".
* TheGadfly: During her nicer moments she's not above using her magic to non-maliciously screw with people for her amusement, such as shrinking and expanding Lucy's breasts, [[spoiler:or in ''100 Years Quest'' turning nearly all the female Fairy Tail wizards small enough to enjoy a pool replica of Aldoron, only to walk off and forget to turn them back to normal. And then there's the time she and Lucy swapped bodies and Brandish gleefuly exploited what kinds of risqué outfits she could have Lucy pose in for a photo shoot.]]
* GratuitousGreek: Her surname, μ (mu), is the 12th letter of the Greek alphabet. [[MeaningfulName A fitting name for one of the Spriggan 12]].
* HalfHeartedHenchman: Because she's powerful enough to destroy entire nations, Brandish is unenthusiastic about her duties as one of Zeref's PraetorianGuard, preferring to lounge around and [[VillainsOutShopping sample ice cream]]. She only commits out of loyalty to her country, and gives her all during her RoaringRampageOfRevenge on Lucy.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Her magic is just [[SizeShifter making things as big or small as she wants]]. What makes this awesome is the fact there seems to be no limit to what she can apply this magic to aside from beings much stronger than herself (such as Neinhart when he was enhanced by Irene [[spoiler:or Aldoron]]). She can shrink entire islands to the size of a footstool, fatal wounds into scratches, and others' magic attacks to send them flying right back at the enemy. As [=DiMaria=] herself notes, all Brandish would have to do to kill someone is make them tiny enough to step on, or enlarge their internal organs to make them explode.
* HeelFaceTurn: By the time of ''100 Years Quest'', she and Fairy Tail are no longer on opposing sides. She's still a lazybones and casually steers clear of anything that sounds like a waste of her time, but Brandish will lend a hand if necessary and becomes genuinely helpful when her interests align with Fairy Tail.
* HourOfPower: She reveals in ''100 Years Quest'' that things she changes sizes of will eventually go back to their original sizes if she's not supporting it with her magic, but depending on ''how'' big or small she makes them will affect how long it takes. For example, she has no issue at all super-sizing herself or Happy to be as big as buildings for extended periods of time, [[spoiler:but notes she can only keep Gajeel at his "max size" (as in, bigger than a ''mountain'') for about three minutes before he turns back on his own.]]
* HypocriticalHumor: She hates how [=DiMaria=] teases her, but she later grows to enjoy teasing Lucy, like when she shrank and then enlarged her chest. Of course, there's a big difference between momentarily adjusting Lucy's size, and sadistically contemplating humiliating a P.O.W. from her own side.
* ItsPersonal: Brandish's enmity towards the Heartfilia family is personal, since she wrongly assumes Layla killed Grammi during their battle over Aquarius's key. She gets better upon learning the truth about Grammi's demise from Aquarius.
* JustToyingWithThem: In her proper fight with Lucy when she refuses to back down, Brandish isn't really interested in actually killing her now that she understands the truth of her mother Grammi's death and even actually likes Lucy a bit, but she still can't just abandon her duty as a warrior of Alvarez. As a result, Brandish chooses to just put up enough of a fight to make Lucy struggle but still have a chance rather than end it swiftly and brutally in her own favor. Whether or not this would have turned into a "ILetYouWin" scenario is unclear because [=DiMaria=] crashes the party and spells this out for everyone involved before taking matters into her own hands.
* LadyOfBlackMagic: Most of the time she maintains a composed and concentrated attitude that, combined with her powerful magic and her enormous magic power, is sufficient to establish her undoubtedly as one of the strongest and dangerous women in the whole manga.
* LetsGetDangerous: She may prefer to buy ice cream over fighting, but when she finds the right motivation, she becomes downright terrifying and shows that she more than deserves the rank she has.
* MartialPacifist: She doesn't like fighting and will always try to settle matters with words, but when she realizes that Natsu, Lucy, and Happy aren't willing to listen to her offer of fleeing the battle, she instigates a RevengeByProxy on Lucy. Although she doesn't intend to fight seriously, she still nearly curb-stomps Lucy.
* TheMedic: Her SizeShifter powers can also be used on wounds, shrinking them down from fatal to negligible. She uses this power on both Natsu and August to save them from their wounds, and secretly does the same for Mirajane when August blasts her through the heart with magic to prevent Irene from torturing her to death.
* MissingMom: Her mother, Grammi, died when she was very young.
* MsFanservice: She has a very shapely figure under an outfit that is practically swimwear, and it's exposed further when her jacket is taken. Macao and Wakaba take the opportunity to ogle her while she's imprisoned. She also had some BathtubBonding with Lucy in the middle of a war. Ironically, if someone tries to exploit her sexiness, it really pisses her off, which is why she gets her jacket back after asking nicely and starting to cooperate with Fairy Tail.
* MyCountryRightOrWrong: This is eventually {{subverted|Trope}}. Regardless of how much she may feel indebted to Lucy after getting over her RoaringRampageOfRevenge, she says that at the end of the day, she is a citizen of Alvarez and cannot betray her country. While she claims to be loyal to Alvarez, she calls out her own country when she sees behavior that she doesn't agree with, up to and including telling August that the army's actions were tantamount to genocide.
* NeverGotToSayGoodbye: She never said farewell to Grammi upon learning of the latter's death.
* OneDegreeOfSeparation: Her mother was a friend and servant of Lucy's mother, despite the two living on opposite sides of the world.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: The nickname with which she is known and feared all over the world "Nation Destroyer" establishes by itself how much this woman should not be underestimated. If she wanted, she could shrink a kingdom to the size of an insect and step on it.
* PowerPerversionPotential: She shows off a more perverted use with her size-changing powers by shrinking and growing Lucy's breast size.
* PunchClockVillain: Unlike the other Spriggan 12, she isn't excited one bit over their emperor's plan to attack Ishgal. She also lets Fairy Tail go after they beat Alvarez's troops, but not before warning them not to come to the empire. The only reason she follows her emperor's goal is because, simply put, [[MyCountryRightOrWrong Alvarez is her home]].
* RedBaron: Being called a "Nation Destroyer" discourages anyone from screwing with her.
* RelativeRidicule: She blames Lucy's mother Layla for the death of her own mother Brandish.
* ReluctantWarrior: She hates fighting, but once the gloves come off, she can wipe an entire country off the map. She ''is'' loyal to Zeref, however, and states that she will follow his orders regardless of how much she may complain about doing so.
* TheResenter: Grammi inadvertently causes Layla's death because the former is unable to get Aquarius's key in time for the opening of Eclipse, and is subsequently killed by Zoldio as a result. When Brandish learns about Grammi's death, however, she immediately draws her own conclusions, which leads to [[ThisIsUnforgivable bitter resentment towards Layla]] and her own transformation into a villain.
* RevengeByProxy: With Layla already dead by the time she meets Lucy, Brandish decides to kill the latter to avenge Grammi's death. Fortunately, Aquarius intervenes and makes her realize the truth about what happened between Grammi and Layla.
* RoaringRampageOfRevenge: Brandish decides to avenge Grammi's death upon realizing that Lucy is Layla's daughter. Fortunately for Brandish, she snaps out of it when she discovers that Grammi inadvertently caused Layla's death and was subsequently killed by Zoldio, thus vindicating Layla.
* ShamelessFanserviceGirl: She has no problem stripping naked and getting into someone else's bath in the middle of a warzone. [[spoiler:Just don't ask her to debase herself for gravure photography- unless she can model under the guise of Lucy.]]
* SinsOfOurFathers: Brandish's TraumaButton is pressed when she discovers that Lucy is the daughter of the wizard who apparently killed Grammi in a struggle over Aquarius's key. As such, she decides to kill Lucy to avenge Grammi's death. Ironically, it turns out ''Grammi'' inadvertently caused Layla's death.
* SizeShifter: She can shrink and enlarge herself to her advantage.
* SquishyWizard: Not an ounce of her tremendous magic applies to her durability. As such, she can be knocked out with a single smack to the head. At least, [[WorfHadTheFlu when she's suffering from hay fever]].
* StepfordSmiler: Most of the time, her smiles are hiding the fact she is moody and depressed, and she originally had a very big chip on her shoulder about growing up without her mother. When she displays a genuine smile that isn't laced with malice, she's found something to pull her out of a malaise.
* {{Stripperiffic}}: She has a BadassLongcoat worn over a bikini, all while ChainedByFashion.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Brandish can be both caustic and sweet, sometimes abusing her subordinates, or playfully trolling her rivals and friends.
* SweetTooth: In ''100 Years Quest'', she's seen eating a parfait or ice cream whenever she appears.
* TearsOfRemorse: Brandish breaks down in tears when she tries to kill Lucy as a way to get over Grammi's death.
* TermsOfEndangerment: Her name is shortened to "Randi" by [=DiMaria=]. It'd be an AffectionateNickname if they didn't [[VitriolicBestBuds despise one another]].
* ThisIsUnforgivable: She's unwilling to forgive Layla after mistaking her for killing Grammi in a battle over Aquarius's key. That is, until Aquarius sets the record straight on Grammi and Layla.
* TheTransmogrifier: She can change the mass and size of any other object or person. For example, she can turn an entire island into anything from a mountain to a mere footstep at will with marginal effort, shrink people to the size of a doll, or make them as tall as a skyscraper.
* TraumaButton: The moment she realizes that Lucy is a member of the Heartfilia bloodline, she instantly decides to enact her RoaringRampageOfRevenge. But thanks to Aquarius, Brandish gets better once she finally realizes the truth about Grammi and Layla first-hand.
* UnreliableExpositor: Towards Lucy when she first explains what happened between Layla and Grammi. While Layla and Grammi ''did'' die, Brandish leaves out the key details where Zoldio actually killed Grammi after the latter [[UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom inadvertently caused Layla to open Eclipse at the cost of her own life]]. Brandish fully understands what happened once she hears Aquarius's side of the story.
* VillainExitStageLeft: She escapes with a shrunken [=DiMaria=] in tow after everyone else in the Spriggan 12 besides August is defeated.
* VillainsOutShopping: When she's introduced, Brandish gets a bowl of mango gelato instead of searching for a spy in the empire's midst, while Natsu and Gray are [[OhCrap quaking in fear of her power]].
* VitriolicBestBuds: She hates [=DiMaria=], especially for the way she teases her, but their casual interactions and nicknames for each other make them the closest things to friends they have in Alvarez. Just as [=DiMaria=] tries to kill her for betraying the empire, Brandish decides to repay her in kind.
* WalkingSwimsuitScene: Her outfit consists of a bikini and chains hanging off a collar.
* WeaksauceWeakness: She has serious hay fever, which is unwittingly used against her after Ajeel stirs up a sandstorm him Magnolia.
* WhenSheSmiles: She often wears a bored expression, but she gives a genuine smile when talking to those she cares about, such as August and eventually Lucy, the latter of whom comments on how cute her smile looks in ''100 Years Quest''.
* WhyDontYouJustShootHim: When Brandish is finally motivated to fight, [=DiMaria=] muses why she doesn't just take the quickest route and blow them up from the inside or step on them. She takes this to mean that Brandish doesn't have the heart to do it.
* WorfHadTheFlu: She gets decked by Cana while she's having a sneezing fit due to her pollen allergy, and is then put in PowerNullifier cuffs that make her as vulnerable as any ordinary person. Without these pesky annoyances, Brandish proves to be just as dangerous as the rest of her team, including when she holds herself back.

A female knight with unparalleled skill on the battlefield, and a sharp tongue to match. [=DiMaria=]'s magic is God Soul, the ultimate Takeover, allowing her to absorb the divine power of gods to use at her leisure. Her favorite form is Chronos, the God of Time, which allows her to stop time and cut her enemies down faster than they can blink.
----
* AgonyBeam: Her Chronos form has a variant of this called Age Scratch that forces its victim to relive every ounce of pain they've ever experienced throughout their life, all at once. To someone who's been through hell like Wendy, this was so excruciating that she couldn't move afterward.
* AmbiguouslyGay: It's not outright stated that she's a lesbian, but she likes to strip female opponents and admire the sight and will not toy around when it is required. Then there's the fact she also may have feelings, though perhaps somewhat warped, for her colleague Brandish.
* BerserkButton: As someone who loves her [[TimeStandsStill Age Seal]] because it lets her have the whole world all to herself, she doesn't take kindly to those who find a way to resist or interfere with her spell.
* {{BFS}}: She wields a sword that's pretty much the same size as her.
* BreakTheHaughty: She gets totally pulverized by Sherria when she uses the full strength of her God Slayer Magic, and second by Natsu/E.N.D. when she threatens to harm Lucy.
* BullyingADragon: She gets the biggest reevaluation of her life after she threatens to gouge Lucy's eyes out in front of Natsu. To be fair, though, he was seemingly on death's door at the time, and she had no idea that he was on the verge of awakening as the most powerful demon Zeref has ever created.
* CharacterDevelopment: At first, [=DiMaria=] has a relaxed and sharp-tongued personality that enjoys stripping her female enemies to tease them, and is not above mocking her own allies for their losses. One HumiliationConga later, however, she becomes [[HumblePie more humble]] and takes back all the bad things she said about Brandish. But then [[EtTuBrute she catches Brandish helping Fairy Tail]], which turns her more psychotic and sadistic than before towards those who turned "her" Brandish against her.
* CharacterTics: She activates her Age Seal by clicking her teeth, and is prone to doing so while frustrated even when she doesn't (or can't) activate it.
* DarkActionGirl: She is renowned as the deadliest female knight on her side of the world, and she puts those skills to use by decimating the armies of Fairy Tail and their allies.
* DesignatedGirlFight: All of her opponents are female, and she relishes in the opportunity to prove herself superior.
* DissonantSerenity: Once her God Soul activates, her sneering, sardonic personality vanishes and is replaced with an eerie, expressionless face. She later does the same when she ruthlessly cuts Brandish down for betraying her.
* EtTuBrute: Brandish becomes all but dead to [=DiMaria=] when she decides to bluff her fight with Lucy out of friendship. Thus, [=DiMaria=] has no trouble cutting her former comrade's chest open and blame the whole thing on Lucy.
* EvilIsPetty: She justifies attempting to kill Wendy because [[DisproportionateRetribution she kicked her in the face]].
* FashionableAsymmetry: She only wears armor on a single arm.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: Only a single, glowing eye of hers can be seen in her Chronos form.
* AGodAmI: Quite literally in her case. After she assumes her Chronos form, she speaks as though she were the God of Time itself.
* GoldColoredSuperiority: Golden eyes, golden armour, and has all the power to be expected of a member of the Spriggan 12.
* HeelFaceTurn: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. ''100 Years Quest'' reveals that after losing the war and getting a thorough HumiliationConga, [=DiMaria=] decided she had enough of fighting and took up working on a plantation, where she seems legitimately happy.
* HeroKiller: She mortally wounds Carla, and pushes Wendy and Sherria to the point where the latter is forced to sacrifice her magic power forever to defeat her ''and'' save her friend's life.
* HumblePie: Her relationship with Brandish improves after getting beaten, chained up, and humiliated the same way she once teased Brandish for. But that's all rendered moot when she finds Brandish trying to help Natsu and Lucy, making her more ruthless than before. Getting totally thrashed by Natsu[=/=]E.N.D., however, makes it stick to the point where ''100 Years Quest'' reveals she decided to quit fighting and become a farmer after the war, and seemingly enjoys it.
* HumiliationConga: The Alvarez Empire arc seems to enjoy [[BreakTheHaughty putting DiMaria through hell]]. First, after she enjoys a full day stripping her opponents naked with her time-stopping magic, Wendy and Sherria are able to fight back thanks to Ultear, who gives Sherria the massive PowerUp needed to neutralize her God Soul. After that, she's locked up in PowerNullifier chains exactly the same way she mocked Brandish for getting into. Then, when Irene scatters everyone in the country, [=DiMaria=] has to crawl back to her allies on her knees, still chained up, before Larcade rescues her. And just when she tries to exert her dominance by trying to kill Brandish and torture Lucy in front of Natsu, E.N.D. awakens and pummels the ever-loving crap out of her, permanently traumatizing her. The last we see [=DiMaria=] in the original manga, she's shrunken down and squirming in an understandably displeased Brandish's clutches, no longer the high and mighty warrior she was when she started.
* ItsAllAboutMe: The reason [=DiMaria=] loves her [[TimeStandsStill time-freezing powers]] so much is because she gets to have the entire world all to herself without anyone bugging her. So when Ultear's presence in her pocket of time threatens to defile her personal utopia, she ''really'' flips her lid.
* {{Jerkass}}: Her sardonic, sharp-tongued personality, constant berating of her allies, and general sadistic tendencies definitely make her one of the biggest jerks among the 12.
* LeotardOfPower: She switches her {{Stripperific}} attire out with this after being rescued.
* MasterSwordsman: Subverted, though not in a way that makes her less dangerous. She is touted as the "Warrior Queen" for this very reason, and seems to show it when she is able to one-up Kagura, the very same woman who nearly bested Erza, one of Fairy Tail's most powerful wizards. However, it turns out that she has [[TimeStandsStill the power to stop time]], and does all of her fancy sword tricks during these intervals.
* MiseryBuildsCharacter: A good chunk of her CharacterDevelopment stems from this. Before her defeat, [=DiMaria=] acted smug and showed no concern for her colleagues, as she laughed at the news that Brandish was captured. After being defeated and imprisoned, she realized that it was LaserGuidedKarma and shed TearsOfRemorse. The moment she sees Brandish again, she shows her newfound sense of humility and sympathy by hugging and apologizing to her. ''100 Years Quest'' reveals she's decided to step down from fighting and is now working as a humble farmer on a plantation, seemingly enjoying herself.
* MythicalMotifs: Chronos, the god of time, being the subject of her Take Over.
* OneHandedZweihander: Her {{BFS}} is a supersized backsword designed to be wielded with two hands, and is about as long as she is tall. She effortlessly wields it with one hand as if it were light as a feather.
* OneWingedAngel: She assumes her God Soul: Chronos form after Ultear helps Wendy and Sherria move in her personal pocket of time.
* PowerMakesYourVoiceDeep: Natsumi Fujiwara and Meli Grant deliver deep, threatening voices for [=DiMaria's=] quiry and dangerous personality especially when she uses Take Over God Soul Chronos.
* PowerPerversionPotential: Before she starts fighting seriously, she takes every opportunity to slice off her female opponents' clothes for their [[AllMenArePerverts perverted male allies]] to see.
* PowersViaPossession: She takes the Strauss siblings' Takeover magic to its greatest extreme with her God Soul, which allows her to possess the forms and abilities of ''gods''.
* RacialRemnant: She's a descendant of the people who inhabited ancient city of Mildian, which included Zeref himself.
* RedBaron: She is known as the "Warrior Queen" (or alternatively the "Valkyrie") for being a supposed MasterSwordsman; in reality, she only seems that way because [[TimeStandsStill she can actually stop time]].
* RetiredBadass: As Brandish tells Lucy in ''100 Years Quest'', [=DiMaria=] has decided fighting is no longer very appealing and started working on a plantation since the end of the Ishgal-Alvarez war.
* {{Sadist}}: She's the type of sadist who gets off on humiliation, which she does by cutting off their clothes, mocking them, and ''then'' moving in for the kill. After she accuses Lucy of turning Brandish against her, however, she shows a liking to the slow, painful variety as well by threatening to cut up Lucy's face, starting with [[EyeScream her eyes]].
* {{Stripperiffic}}: Her outfit is fairly revealing for someone who frequents battlefields. Her first outfit's top is just a lacy bra that exposes her midriff and her cleavage. But it is still less revealing than her [[OneWingedAngel Chronos]] form.
* SuddenHumility: She mocks Brandish for getting caught by Fairy Tail and blissfully wonders what kind of humiliation she might be feeling. Before long, she finds herself in the exact same position after getting trashed by Sherria's God Slayer magic, and realizes she has no right to make fun of Brandish anymore.
* TheTease: Her teasing of Brandish is more innocent and obviously less suggestive, but her teasing of her enemies is much more flirtatious and scathing, particularly [[PsychoLesbian her female opponents]].
* TermsOfEndangerment: Just like her biting nickname for Brandish, [=DiMaria=] has her own nickname, "Mari".
* TimeMaster: Her Age Seal spell can [[TimeStandsStill completely freeze the flow of time]] for everyone but herself, rendering entire armies helpless as she has her way with them. She can also subject her victims to every injury they've ever sustained in their lifetime at once with her Age Scratch. This power stems from her possessing Chronos, the God of Time, using Takeover magic.
* TookALevelInKindness: She becomes nicer to Brandish after suffering the same kind of humiliation she teased her for getting, only to immediately subvert this by turning on and nearly killing Brandish when she is shown to have made friends with Natsu and Lucy.
* TsurimeEyes: Fitting for a DarkActionGirl.
* VillainBall: Her time-stopping is one of the most dangerous abilities in the entire series, leaving her opponents completely at her mercy. She proceeds to waste most of her time (so to speak) messing around with her opponents (particularly tearing off girls' clothes) until someone who happens to be immune to it comes in.
* VillainousBSOD: After getting thoroughly wasted and traumatized by a demon-powered Natsu, and then being faced with Brandish surviving her attempt to kill her, [=DiMaria=] spends a good amount of time sitting in wistful silence, appearing genuinely remorseful for her actions.
* VitriolicBestBuds: She and Brandish hurl insults at each other, but they really are friends. Her appreciation for Brandish only flourishes after she has been thoroughly beaten by Wendy and Sherria, where [=DiMaria=] promises to pay back the humiliation they suffered. Then, when she feels betrayed by Brandish for refusing to kill their enemies and [[YouHaveOutlivedYourUsefulness cuts her down for it]], she turns her anger on the wizards who corrupted "her Randi".
* VoiceOfTheLegion: As Chronos she has an echoing voice.
* TheWorfEffect: She's no pushover in her fight with Wendy and Sherria, despite losing in the end. That's hardly the case when she's faced with Natsu while he's in mid-demonization, and nearly gets turned into a wall decoration as a result.
* WouldHurtAChild: Exactly when she warns Wendy and Sherria that a battlefield is no place for children like them, she shows them zero mercy for their refusal to leave.
* {{Yandere}}: She shows these tendencies towards Brandish upon seeing her making friends with Fairy Tail, responding by slicing open Brandish's stomach and threatening to chop off Natsu's head and cut Lucy's eyes out with a knife, all because they "killed [her] Randi".

[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_neinhart_anime.png]]

A flowery man who specializes in creating Historias, exact replicas of the deceased from others' memories. Neinhart revels in using this technique, named Historia of the Dead, to arrange twisted reunions between his enemies and their most fearsome foes or dearly departed loved ones.
----
* AgentPeacock: He is by far one of the most effeminate male characters in the series, with his slender figure and long eyelashes. He is also one of the series' most powerful wizards by virtue of being one of the Spriggan 12.
* ArmorIsUseless: His armor is just for show, doing him jack squat against Jellal's Grand Chariot.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: His eyes become dark-colored when under Irene's enchantment.
* BlowYouAway: Can use wind magic, which he can use to slice opponents up using RazorWind.
* BondVillainStupidity: He's perfectly capable of blasting his enemies through ships on his own, yet he opts for the more "entertaining" route of letting his Historias fight for him. When Jellal is about to finish him off, Neinhart opts to guilt-trip him into standing down by creating a Historia of Simon, [[ForgotAboutHisPowers rather than retaliate with another magic blast]].
* ClippedWingAngel: Irene gives him a supposedly astronomical PowerUp when he hesitates to kill Erza, which allows him to NoSell his fellow Spriggan Brandish's magic. But when he decides to try out his skills on Natsu, he still proves to be an inferior opponent once Natsu clobbers him.
* CreatingLifeIsBad: How he describes his magic. Unlike Mavis's illusions, his creations are corporeal, fully sentient, near-exact replicas of whoever it is his magic is creating, right down to their magic and personalities. However, they're also completely obedient soldiers who follow their creator's every command, regardless of their previous relationship with their opponents.
* DirtyCoward: At the end of the day, his Historias are just glorified bodyguards for him to cower behind, with him promising to bring them back to life as long as they protect him.
* EmeraldPower: Wears green armour and wields an incredibly powerful magic.
* EnemyScan: He can scan his enemies much like Wall, but while Wall uses it to see their weaknesses, Neinhart scans their memories and uses them to summon foes they faced in the past.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: He's a man who entertains himself by bringing back the dead to play his enemies' emotions like a fiddle, but he's taken aback when Irene orders him to kill Erza, her own daughter.
* EvilIsHammy: He describes his power using flamboyant gestures and flowery language, and [[ChewingTheScenery devours the entire ship he's on]] while doing it.
* HavingABlast: He can blast people with magic explosions powerful enough to send them flying clean through the hull of a ship. [[ForgotAboutHisPowers If he remembered to do this on Jellal instead of trying to psych him out of his finishing attack]], he might've stood a chance.
* IKnowWhatYouFear: He uses his magic in such a fashion. When faced with Erza, Jellal, and Kagura, he discovers their shared history and forces them to fight Simon to psyche them out, and when faced with Erza alone he summons three of her toughest foes: Ikaruga, Azuma, and Kyôka. He also does the same with Gray and Lyon by summoning their dead master, Ur, while everyone else in the port has to fight their most terrifying enemies: Zancrow for Merudy, Keyes for Juvia, Ezel for Wendy and Hades for Laxus.
* ItOnlyWorksOnce:
** Summoning Simon's Historia right off the bat succeeds in psyching out Erza, Jellal, and especially Kagura. The second time? Not so much when Kagura steels herself and cuts the Historia down.
** After Erza dispels his Historias of Ikaruga, Azuma, and Kyôka, Neinhart explicitly tells Irene that his Historias won't be of any use against her now that she understands how to counter them. Irene tells him he'll just have to do the job himself then and proceeds to [[MagicalEnhancement enhance]] him so his other offensive magic will do the job. Unfortunately for him, he gets taken out long before he has a chance at a rematch with Erza.
* KeystoneArmy: His summons go away once he is defeated. He explicitly tells the revived God Serena, Wall, and Bloodman that they'd better protect him if they don't want to go poof.
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown: He doesn't just make Historias to simply mess with Fairy Tail and their allies' heads; before they can recover from facing [=DiMaria=] and Wall, he thrusts them into battle with the likes of Hades, the Seven Kin, and the Nine Demon Gates.
* ManipulativeBastard: He loves to toy around with his enemies' emotions by forcing them to fight their loved ones: Simon for Erza, Jellal and Kagura, and Ur for Gray and Lyon.
* MeaningfulName:
** The first half of his name, "Nein", is German for "no". Put that together with the other half, traditionally an alternate spelling of "heart", and you get "no heart". Fitting for a man who finds amusement in forcing people to face their worst fallen enemies or their departed loved ones.
** "Historia" means "history" in multiple languages, particularly Latin, Spanish and Portuguese.
* MookMaker: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. He can fight enemies off on his own well enough, but he mainly specializes in summoning Historias to defend himself.
* NecessaryDrawback: While there is seemingly no limit to the number of Historias he can make at once nor who can make into one as long as they're dead, there seems to be an undisclosed power loss between the original and the Historia if they have comparable or even superior magic power to Neinhart himself, and the stronger the Historia in question the more energy Neinhart himself must expend to create it. This is particularly evident with fallen Spriggan 12 members God Serena, Wall, and Bloodman (with him explicitly noting how tiring it was to recreate them), who pose somewhat less of a challenge than they did to the ones who originally took them out.
* {{Necromancer}}: His magic brings back the dead, though instead of reanimation, it involves bringing back the ghosts and memories of those people. Keyes, an actual necromancer, makes a point that it is different from his own abilities. [[spoiler:Irene emphasizes to Wendy in ''100 Years Quest'' that in order for Neinhart to make a Historia, the subject ''must'' be dead, meaning that miraculously-revived God Serena's claim that he was OnlyMostlyDead isn't true and somehow he's been resurrected.]]
* NoSell: After he's "enhanced" by Irene, he effortlessly shrugs off Brandish's magic. This doesn't help him against Natsu giving him a good pummeling, however.
* OrcusOnHisThrone: He spends nearly the entire battle at Hargeon just sitting on his ship while [=DiMaria=], Wall and their forces take over the harbor and take the fight to Fairy Tail and their allies themselves. He doesn't even bother to unleash his Historias until Jellal, Erza and Kagura board his ship and his fellow Spriggan have been defeated, and he seems almost annoyed that he actually had to get involved at the pair's "failure" to deal with them without him.
* PowersDoTheFighting: He stands still and observes while his Historias fight. That doesn't mean he has no offensive spells at his disposal, though, but to him, making others fight for him is simply more entertaining, plus he shows himself to be [[SquishyWizard very poor at actually taking a hit]].
* PurpleIsPowerful: SquishyWizard status aside, his magic lets him keep a small army's worth of enemy wizards at bay.
* SomethingAboutARose: His armor is emblazoned with dark blue roses.
* SquishyWizard: His magic is powerful, but it's the only thing standing between his enemies and him since it relies solely on his opponents' emotions weakening their resolve to fight. Once Jellal and Kagura overcome his power, he is quickly pulverized. Despite getting a power-up from Irene explicitly to enhance his own prowess to take out Erza, Natsu is still able to take him down with just a few hits once he actually gets into punching range.
* SummonMagic: His Historia of the Dead lets him call forth replicas of departed friends and foes of people he's up against.
* {{Twinmaker}}: His Historias are exact, living replicas of the dead that he draws from the memories of his enemies, with the same powers and personalities as when they were alive. However, these Historias vanish the moment they are defeated or experience a particularly powerful emotion, such as grief or fear.
* TheWorfEffect: He gets a PowerUp courtesy of Irene, and yet still gets taken out by a single punch from Natsu, which tips Brandish off to the kind of threat Natsu poses.
* {{Warhawk}}: As revealed in ''100 Years Quest'', he schemed with Invel to start another war with Ishgal after Alvarez made peace, but was imprisoned for it.
* WarriorPoet: His punctuates his first appearance with an incredibly flowery speech about love, friendship, family, betrayal, and death.

[[folder:Bloodman]]
!!"God of Death" Bloodman
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KenichirouMatsuda (Japanese), Creator/BradHawkins (English)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_bloodman_anime.png]]

A hooded monster whose entire body is made up of deadly anti-magic particles, making him a harbinger of doom for any wizard foolhardy enough to oppose him. Bloodman also wields an amalgamation of curses used by all of the fallen Etherious demons of Tartaros.
----
* AllYourPowersCombined: He is able to duplicate the powers of Tartaros' Nine Demon Gates, such as Jackal's [[HavingABlast explosions]], Ezel's [[AbsurdlySharpBlade blades]], Torafuzar's [[MakingASplash black water]], and Silver's [[AnIcePerson ice breath]]. For good measure, he can also produce Mard Geer's thorn brambles.
* BadWithTheBone: His signature attacks involve burying his opponents under [[NothingButSkulls mountains of skulls]].
* BaldOfEvil: He is completely hairless under that hood of his.
* BizarreAlienBiology: His body is made up of Devil Particles just like other Etherious such as Tempester and Keyes. Unlike them, however, he can assume his particle form at will.
* BloodKnight: He's not at all put out by the fact Gajeel isn't affected by his Devil Particles. In fact, he's almost eager to cross blows with someone who doesn't just fall down and die from being in his presence.
* TheBrute: Has the most straightforward fighting style amidst his Spriggan 12 colleagues, befitting the fact that he's physically the largest, and tends to brutally beat down his opponents.
* CurbStompBattle: His fight with the entire Saber Tooth and Blue Pegasus guilds is completely one-sided, with him showing zero signs of fatigue while they were brought to the tip of death and crucified.
* DarkIsEvil: He dresses entirely in [[RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver blood red and black]], and is one of the most ruthless villains in the series.
* TheDreaded: Once he enters the battlefield, Blue Pegasus and Saber Tooth start running for the hills in terror of the "God of Death".
* TheForceIsStrongWithThisOne: Subverted; Gajeel observes that his magic power is nothing special compared to the other 12. Bloodman explains that this is because he uses ''curse'' power, the same used by the members of Tartaros, [[AllYourPowersCombined and he's just as dangerous as all of them put together]].
* ForgottenPhlebotinum: If he really has the powers of the Nine Demon Gates, he could have used Jackal's curse to dissuade Gajeel from hitting him with physical attacks once he was no longer intangible by placing explosive reactions on Gajeel at every point of physical contact, absorbed any magic that Gajeel was using with Franmalth's Revolution at least before he absorbed the Devil Particles and gained demon properties, or crippled Gajeel by shutting off his senses with Kyôka's curse. He could have even stopped any fight from taking place with Seliah's Macro if he used it before Gajeel absorbed his Devil Particles (as at that point he would be immune to it ala Mirajane). Lastly, he could have invoked Memento Mori, the ultimate curse of Mard Geer which simply erased the concept of life and death to end the whole existence of the recipient, though that curse was specially designed by Mard Geer for his exclusive use, and Bloodman attempted a last resort variation [[TakingYouWithMe that could drag himself and Gajeel to the underworld.]]
* AGodAmI: Repeatedly refers to himself as the "God of Death".
* HeroKiller: Not only does he single-handedly decimate the combined forces of Saber Tooth and Blue Pegasus, but he also comes ''extremely'' close to dragging Gajeel into the underworld after losing to him. It's only by complete coincidence that Gajeel manages to survive thanks to Irene.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: His particles are deadly and keep him from harm by magic and physical attacks, but Gajeel realizes said particles can likewise harm him and absorbs their properties through their trace amounts of iron into his body before laying a beatdown on him.
* HumanoidAbomination: It isn't entirely clear what kind of monster he is, though it's clear he's far from human. He's implied to be an Etherious through his use of Tartaros' curses, but unlike them, he can turn himself into a cloud of anti-magic particles and reform at will.
* InTheHood: He spends most of his time wearing a hooded BadassCape, making him look like TheGrimReaper everyone fears him to be. When he begins to fight seriously, he reveals his scary countenance, and then his full Etherious form makes him look like a bone-chilling skeletal lich.
* InconsistentDub: Crunchyroll took to translating his name as "[[TomTheDarkLord Bradman]]", as did Kodansha's early translations.
* IntangibleMan: Most normal physical attacks have no effect on him since his body is made entirely of anti-magic particles. Similarly, intangible spells such as Rogue's shadow magic do some damage, though, and like Rogue, he actually has to turn tangible in order to physically touch someone, which leaves him open to other kinds of counterattack.
* IronicEcho: After he and his soldiers crucified Sabertooth and Blue Pegasus, Gajeel was very eager to retaliate by crucifying Bloodman with iron bindings, reflecting how much Gajeel himself had developed into a good guy, having inflicted the torture on Team Shadow Gear in the past and becoming particularly disgusted and offended by the ugly memory being dredged up.
* KnightOfCerebus: There is virtually no humor surrounding his scenes or actions, and whenever there is, it never comes from him.
* MageKiller: Far from a BadassNormal, his whole body is made up of AntiMagic particles that make entire armies of wizards keel over without him needing to lift a finger.
* MasterOfNone: While he has all the powers of Tartaros, and can use their curses in battle, he isn't really skilled at using any of them. He basically uses each of their powers to confuse his enemies but doesn't use any of their advanced abilities in ways they used. This ultimately allows Gajeel to win, as had he used all the powers to their fullest, Gajeel would have been overwhelmed.
* NighInvulnerable: Being completely impervious to physical attacks due to his intangible body, he can only be damaged by wizards with [[HolyHandGrenade holy]] and [[CastingAShadow shadow]]-type attacks (assuming they survive his AntiMagic assault), which he can overtake with sheer brute force. It takes Gajeel [[HoistByHisOwnPetard assimilating Bloodman's own anti-magic particles]] for him to really turn the tides.
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: If you expect someone with a name like "Bloodman" to be anything other than someone who slaughters his foes and brings all but the most stalwart of heroes to their knees, prepare to be disappointed.
* ObviouslyEvil: With everything from his choice of outfit to his title, he couldn't look more evil if he tried.
* OneHitKill: Bloodman's entire body composition is made of deadly Devil Particles. While it isn't instantaneous, breathing in these particles is essentially a death sentence for any magic user.
* OneWingedAngel: Once he's done playing around, he assumes his true form as a giant mass of Devil Particles vaguely shaped in the form of a giant skull-faced human that can use the curses of the Nine Demon Gates.
* OurDemonsAreDifferent: He is all but directly stated to be a demon from the Book of Zeref, having the body makeup of one and possessing powers that match the demons of Tartaros.
* PoisonousPerson: Like all other Etherious demons, his body is made of toxic Devil Particles, which are absolutely lethal to wizards.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Has a purple cloak, purple aura for his Curses, and wields the powers [[AllYourPowersCombined of all Nine Demon Gates]] granting him an immense array of deadly powers.
* RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver: He wouldn't be deserving of the name Bloodman if he didn't have that red and black armor of his.
* RedIsViolent: Has red armour and is the most brutal of the Spriggan 12.
* ReplacementGoldfish: After he's killed by Gajeel, Neinhart makes a Historia of him to participate in the final assault against Fairy Tail, effectively bringing him BackFromTheDead, only for him to be beaten by Rogue.
* {{Shinigami}}: His Japanese epitaph is this, and he certainly plays up the part, slaughtering his foes so he can "guide them to the afterlife".
* ShouldersOfDoom: Because a terrifying hood and cape just aren't enough to pull off the ObviouslyEvil look.
* SkullForAHead: His face looks like it had its skin peeled clean off which, compounded by his lack of a nose, gives him a distinctly skull-like visage.
* TakingYouWithMe: Once Gajeel takes him down, Bloodman grabs onto him and tries dragging him into the afterlife with him. It would've worked, too, if Irene's spell shuffling Fairy Tail and Alvarez's forces around didn't interfere.
* UnskilledButStrong: His BizarreAlienBiology makes him impervious to most attacks, his Devil Particles are capable of killing his enemies almost instantly without him needing to lift a finger, and his access to all the Curses of the Nine Demon Gates and Mard Geer means he has wide pool of moves to draw on. After Gajeel manages to use Bloodman's own particles against him, however, he proves that he has absolutely no real experience in hand-to-hand combat because of his hands-off fighting style nor does he seem to have advanced knowledge of Tartaros' techniques, prefering to use the powers that provide flashy destructive attacks like [[HavingABlast Bomb Curse]] or [[BreathWeapon Ice Devil's Rage]] while ignoring more exotic abilities like [[EnergyAbsorption Revolution]], [[AgonyBeam Enhancement]], or [[PeoplePuppets Macro]]. At that point, Gajeel wrecks him because he can't avoid the attacks anymore nor can he get the wind-up time to fire off a Curse.
* WalkingWasteland: Tempester's use of Devil Particles in the Tartaros killed hundreds, perhaps thousands of people. That sheer devastation, disturbingly reminiscent of a RealLife chemical weapons attack, is what Bloodman does simply by existing since his body constantly exhales these particles.

!!"Desert King" Ajeel Raml
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Hiromichi Tezuka (Japanese), Josh Bangle (English)
[[quoteright:320:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ajeel_ft_2018.png]][[caption-width-right:320:[[labelnote:'''Moderate Spoiler Warning''']]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/emperor_ajeel_min.png Emperor Ajeel Raml in X793[[/labelnote]]]]

A master sand wizard who is infamous for burying entire cities in sand. Ajeel is one of the more aggressive of the 12 and is said to have attempted invasions of Ishgal against his Emperor's wishes in the past.
----
* AnimeHair: His hair is long and propped up to resemble the leaves of a palm tree.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: While he is impressed by Fairy Tail's strength, he doesn't believe they are any real threat to Alvarez, especially himself, and refuses to accept Erza's victory against him as anything more than a one-time fluke.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: His hair can be compared to a palm tree, which is commonly found in sandy areas.
* AwesomeButImpractical: His ultimate ability, Sand World, is exactly what it sounds like: a gigantic sandstorm that can envelop an entire city [[HomefieldAdvantage which he can move through at will without issue]]. Not only is the potential for FriendlyFire incredibly high, however, but it also reduces visibility to practically zero, including his own, which [[HoistByHisOwnPetard leads to his undoing]]. Wall notes that Ajeel only resorts to using Sand World when facing a foe too dangerous to challenge otherwise.
* BloodKnight: According to Zeref, Ajeel was solely responsible for Alvarez's earlier invasion attempts on Ishgal. He also spearheads the first assault on Fairy Tail, and he looks like he's having the time of his life doing it.
* TheBrute: Has one of the more conventional forms of offence with his magic, and is clearly among the more aggressive members of the Spriggan 12.
* CatchPhrase: "Nice!"
* ElementalShapeshifter: Ajeel can transform his body into sand at will, allowing attacks to pass through him or if he's feeling sadistic trap them inside his body as he disintegrates them into sand, as shown when he does this to a bunch of Erza's swords she shot at him. It's an integral part of Sand World, where Ajeel can manifest himself in any point of the sandstorm's area of effect.
* EvenEvilHasLovedOnes: Although he acts surly towards him, Ajeel shows he truly cares about his grandfather, Yajeel, when he yells at him to get out of the battlefield.
* AGodAmI: He proclaims himself as a god when he activates his Sand World, and tries to make Erza [[KneelBeforeZod revere him as such]] before killing her.
* TheGoodKing: Brandish notes in ''100 Years Quest'' that Ajeel has become the king of Alvarez rather than TheEmperor after the end of the war, and has since abandoned his BloodKnight tendencies in favor of a more peaceful relationship with Ishgal.
* HeelFaceTurn: ''100 Years Quest'' shows that he took his grandfather's words to heart following his losses in the war against Ishgal, stepping up to replace Zeref as ruler of Alvarez to steer it in a better direction.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: Erza takes advantage of his limited field of vision in his Sand World by donning an armor that emits light, giving Bisca a beacon on where to shoot. By the time Ajeel realizes what's happened, the cannon shot slams into him and gives Erza the opening she needs to finish him off.
* HomefieldAdvantage: The biggest advantage Sand World gives Ajeel is that he can merge with it and reappear anywhere inside of it at any time he desires, allowing him to unleash all manner of sneak attacks on his targets and counter their attacks with the sheer volume of sand he's releasing.
* ImprovisedGolem: He almost instantly puts together a massive golem of sand and stone to chase after Fairy Tail. When Gray freezes it, Ajeel makes a swarm of smaller, flying monsters.
* InconsistentDub: Early Crunchyroll translations spelled his last name as "Rommul", assuming it to be a ShoutOut to WWII general Erwin Rommel, the "Desert Fox".
* {{Irony}}: The Spriggan most eager to start a war with Ishgal ends up becoming the king who ultimately decides there's been enough war and fosters a peaceful relationship with Ishgal, going so far as to imprison the members of the 12 who wanted to start another war.
* KungFuWizard: Anyone who can beat out Erza in hand-to-hand combat is this by default. It is only after she exploits his LogicalWeakness that she puts a dent in him, which only works for a little while.
* LightningBruiser: Aside from his extremely potent magic, he's also an extremely agile and talented hand-to-hand fighter, able to outpace Erza in hand-to-hand combat, with her unable to scratch him while he pummels her. Keep in mind, she's a walking armory, and he's unarmed.
* LogicalWeakness: {{Defied|Trope}}. Being a user of sand magic, he is naturally weak against [[MakingASplash water]] and [[BlowYouAway wind]] attacks, which makes Erza's fight with him seem like child's play when she whips out weapons that use both elements. But then [[IAmNotLeftHanded he decides to whip out a sandstorm]]...
* MadEye: Ajeel often squints with one eye and stares wide open with the other.
* MakeThemRot: His sand magic has a particularly nasty CollisionDamage side effect that drains the moisture out of anything and everything the sand touches, including human beings, [[BodyHorror turning them into mummified husks]].
* MeaningfulName: When combined, his full name is the Arabic word for "quicksand".
* NighInvulnerable: He is virtually impossible to injure with physical attacks that don't apply a LogicalWeakness since he can turn his body or anything that touches him into sand. Erza fires multiple swords into him during their initial skirmish and he just casually ignores them sticking out of his body (including his ''head'') as they disintegrate into sand.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: He can conjure sand pits large enough to swallow entire cities, as well as a huge wave of sand that can suck people dry of moisture.
* RedBaron: He is known as the "Desert King" for being the greatest sand wizard in the Empire.
* SandBlaster: He is a sand wizard, and the most powerful seen in the series. He can turn the ground into a sand pit, sense any sort of movement on the continent, suck the moisture out of living beings and dissolve most inanimate objects that make physical contact, create living sand golems to fight for him, and whip up sandstorms large enough to swallow the entire city of Magnolia.
* SuperToughness: He blocks a shot from the [[WaveMotionGun Jupiter Cannon]]--the very same weapon that destroyed Erza's Adamantine Armor back during the guild war with Phantom Lord--with his bare hand. It takes him being nearly disemboweled by Erza, being hit by another fully-powered Jupiter and then being hit TwinkleInTheSky-style by Erza with the Nakagami Armor for him to finally go down. Despite this, he ''still'' manages to survive his defeat.
* TookALevelInKindness: According to Brandish in ''100 Years Quest'', Ajeel has mellowed down from his old BloodKnight persona after becoming king of Alvarez.
** His levels of kindness have grown so much that this former {{Warhawk}} ArrogantKungFuGuy has no problem [[spoiler: teaching former enemies such as Max (a minor member of Fairy Tail and not a main powerhouse, to boot) a trick or two they can add to their repertoire just because. Not to mention, other members of Fairy Tail, like Laki and Kinana, speak of him with respect]]. Considering how he was during Alvarez War Arc, his role as TheGoodKing has made him a far kinder man in his HeelFaceTurn that he was before.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: Completely looks down on Erza when she warns him not to take her lightly, despite him only gaining the advantage due to Marin Hollow's spell in effect. Once it is stopped and Erza starts managing to get hits in, he has to resort to using his ultimate move just to keep the advantage, and while he does come dangerously close to winning with it, that cocky demeanor of his winds up costing him dearly. He also looks down on Elfman and Lisanna, and is again beaten by them.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: He is the first of the 12 to qualify.
* {{Warhawk}}: He's the member most eager to start a war under any pretenses with Ishgal. He ends up growing out of this mindset when he becomes king, to the point where he imprisons the other {{Warhawk}}s of the Spriggan 12, who wanted to start another war after they made peace.
* WarriorPrince: As revealed in ''100 Years Quest'', he was the prince of a small nation in the Alvarez Empire who was handpicked by Zeref to serve on his PraetorianGuard. It's because of his royal lineage that he replaces Zeref as ruler.

An alchemist from the mechanical Machias race who can pinpoint and exploit his enemies' weaknesses with robotic soldiers using his magic, Weakness. Wall participates in the war through a remote-controlled puppet before deciding to step into the fray himself.
----
* AchillesHeel: {{Defied|Trope}}. He knows that lightning is a LogicalWeakness to machines like himself, so he had himself altered to be strengthened by lightning instead.
* ActionBomb: After being defeated, the Wallbot's head explodes violently and takes the Raijin Tribe out of the battle due to them shielding Ichiya.
* ActuallyADoombot: The Wall participating in the pre-war meeting who later attacks Fiore is actually a puppet controlled by the real Wall who, ironically, is a robot himself.
* AdaptiveAbility: Being a machine with magic that can scan his enemies' weaknesses, Wall can adapt himself to the fight if required, seen when he transformed into [[OneWingedAngel Assault Mode]] when he realized that Laxus could be a threat. He can also summon {{Mooks}} that can counter their enemies' attacks.
* AlchemyIsMagic: He can take the tiniest traces of metal out of the ground and morph it into deadly ammunition.
* AntiMagic: He appears to possess some form of nullification magic, blowing a hole in Fried's ''Jutsu-shiki'' barrier like it was nothing. Laxus uses this to his advantage to make him eradicate the Devil Particles infecting him.
* AtomicSuperpower: One of Wall's attacks is creating an Etherion Blast by utilizing nuclear fusion in a confined magical field to deliver a powerful blast.
* AwesomenessByAnalysis: He can pinpoint an enemy's strengths and weaknesses and adjust his fighting performance accordingly.
* AxCrazy: Wall's real form turns out to be much less composed and more fight-crazy than his [[ActuallyADoombot Wallbot]] was.
* BackFromTheDead: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. After getting killed by Laxus, Neinhart creates a Historia of him, although he's eventually defeated again by Minerva.
* {{BFG}}: His [[WaveMotionGun Ultra-Long-Range Anti-Material Magic Cannon]] could easily be compared to a portable version of Phantom Lord's Jupiter Cannon.
* CharacterDeath: Him being a robot, Laxus destroys him by tearing right through his body. It's for this reason that Neinhart is able to create a Historia of him.
* EnemyScan: His magic allows him to do this to detect his opponents' flaws and weaknesses.
* FangsAreEvil: His real form has rows of jagged teeth, and he's a total maniac.
* FantasticNuke: His ultimate technique is a miniature Etherion cannon that he claims could kill Laxus in a single blast. He doesn't use it because Laxus throws up a barrier that holds them both, with Wall forced to cancel his attack unless he wanted to kill ''himself'' alongside his opponent.
* FatBastard: His fake body is fairly overweight and downright creepy.
* FeedItWithFire: He's able to assume a much more powerful form by absorbing lightning.
* FlawExploitation: His Weakness Soldiers are tailor-made to counter their opponents (fire magic against Gray, speedy attacks against Elfman, etc.). They can be easily countered, however, provided their opponents' abilities are diverse enough to cover these weaknesses.
* {{Gonk}}: His eyes are ridiculously close together, his arms and legs are disproportionate to the rest of his body, he has CreepyShadowedUndereyes, and he has a single HairAntennae. {{Justified|Trope}} because he isn't human, nor this is his real form.
* HoistByHisOwnPetard: While he can scan for weaknesses to attack his opponent and created bots to exploit this, his robots are tailored to only ''one'' specific weakness rather then several and since he's using them on groups of opponents, it leads the heroes to use [[SwitchOutMove Switch Out Moves]] to easily beat the bots that had their weaknesses.
* TheHyena: His real form laughs at almost everything, something that creeps [=DiMaria=] out.
* ImprobableAimingSkills: He can aim at targets at least 400km (almost 250 miles) away, and very nearly hits Fairy Tail from that distance if not for Ichiya TakingTheBullet with his airship.
* JustAsPlanned: He tells [=DiMaria=] that he expected his puppet body was going to get trashed going up against Fairy Tail, so he made sure to put it in a position where he could let it [[ActionBomb wreck the enchantment protecting the town]] in order to fire on it with his cannon.
* KillerRobot: He is a mechanical wizard who can create other mechanical wizards.
* LaughingMad: "Ahyahyahyahya!"
* LetsGetDangerous: An oddly {{justified|Trope}} example in that he can apparently "overwrite" his personality to suit his needs, setting it from "frivolous" to "ruthless" and completely prioritizing Laxus' destruction when he realizes he can't beat Laxus by wailing at him like a maniac.
* LogicalWeakness: While his magic is quite versatile, it has some weaknesses. First, while he [[MookMaker can create soldiers]], each soldier is designed to counter only one weakness, making them easy to defeat if the foes simply decide to switch. Second, his EnemyScan can only focus on only one weakness at a time, so if a foe has more than one weakness it makes him harder to defeat. Third, being a robot, unforeseen events such as his magic nullifying the magic barrier particles in Laxus's body [[LogicBomb will drive his robotic circuits nuts]].
* MacrossMissileMassacre: Because a {{BFG}} WaveMotionGun just isn't enough, he's also shown to be able to pull a buttload of guided magic missiles and lock on to multiple targets in a fire-and-forget way.
* {{Magitek}}: His specialty. He can create [[ActuallyADoombot body doubles]], uses alchemy to pull a WaveMotionGun and an entire barrage of missiles out of nowhere, and he has MookMaker powers.
* MechanicalLifeforms: He is a Machias, which is a sentient, self-aware, autonomous species of robots capable of using magic.
* MookMaker: His magic, in a nutshell, can instantly create mechanical soldiers attuned to his opponents' weaknesses.
* NoNonsenseNemesis: He does away with his AxCrazy personality after going into Assault Mode when he realizes it's getting him nowhere against Laxus.
* NoSell: He [[DefiedTrope defies]] Lightning Magic as his LogicalWeakness by revealing he adapted himself to absorb electricity. He's also immune to Ichiya's perfumes, seeing how he cannot detect smells, and being a robot, in general, lets him ignore Bickslow's and Evergreen's {{Magical Eye}}s. However, this doesn't include red lightning.
* ObfuscatingInsanity: His cackling, frivolous behavior in his real form is just another personality setting for an unfeeling machine that he can switch off in a heartbeat if that's what's required of him to destroy his target.
* OneWingedAngel: Once he absorbs electricity, he converts it to electrical energy and transforms further. His true body's "Assault Mode" serves as a similar function.
* PersonOfMassDestruction: He's capable of conjuring a [[WaveMotionGun large cannon]] that is able to fire at long distances and wipe out entire cities. His ultimate attack is his own personal [[FantasticNuke Etherion cannon]], the very same nation-destroying weapon the Magic Council used as a war deterrent.
* PowerFist: When he starts trading physical blows with Laxus, he coats his arms with an extra layer of armor to increase their striking power.
* PsychoticSmirk: His fake body ''never'' has any other expression than this.
* PunnyName: The Japanese spelling of his name (''Waaru Iihito'') is a pun on the phrase "''warui hito''", which means "bad guy". According to Kodansha, the closest English approximation of his name to keep the pun up would be ''Vill Inn'' ("villain") or something similar.
* PurpleIsPowerful: In the anime, when he switches to Assault Mode his black eyes turn purple, and fittingly this is the form that utilizes his large-scale destructive weaponry and power to their fullest potential.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobot: His true form is much more human-looking and expressive, but he is still a robot.
* RoboticReveal: When he confronts the Raijin Tribe at Kardia Cathedral, they are shocked to discover he is a member of the Machias race. While this Wall is revealed to be ActuallyADoombot, his real, humanoid body is still mechanical.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: His fake body wears one over a jacket depicting, of all things, angel wings on the lapels. For bonus points, when it reveals its true mechanical form that's the only clothing still on its upper body, now wrapped around its mouth.
* SlasherSmile: While his puppet body always wears a PsychoticSmirk, the real Wall has his mouth stretched open with his sharp teeth on full display every chance he gets.
* ThisCannotBe: He expresses disbelief when Laxus shifts his lightning to red and realizes he can't absorb it like normal lightning or analyze it in time to counter it.
* TokenRobot: He is the only Machias member of the Spriggan 12 shown so far, representing as his race's elite.
* {{Ubermensch}}: He claims that he can see everything good and bad with humanity, as well as all of humanity's weaknesses. It's why he fully agrees with, and supports Zeref's OmnicidalManiac plans.
* VerbalTic: The fake body ends most of his sentences with "nareba", the conditional form of "to be" in Japanese.
* VibrantOrange: Has orange clothing, an orange BattleAura, and is rather insane in his prankster mode.
* VillainousBreakdown: He starts to panic when he realizes the Devil Particles that were hindering Laxus have been cured thanks to Wall's nullifying magic, spastically switching between his "judge" and "frivolous" personalities. Granted, Wall still thinks he can win since he can absorb lightning...least until Laxus changes the properties of his lighting to red, which Wall ''can't'' absorb.
* VillainousFriendship: Wall seems to get along pretty well with [=DiMaria=], as the two share a laugh about Ajeel being beaten and Brandish being getting captured, and then proceeding to bet on whether or not Wall's WaveMotionGun can succeed in hitting Fairy Tail's guild.
* WalkingArmory: The dude's prettying much a tank on legs. Along with the aforementioned wave gun, once he goes to Assault Mode, he bombards Laxus with a whole array of weapons starting with missiles, a laser, and finally a railgun.
* WaveMotionTuningFork: He has a railgun at his disposal. Unfortunately, he forgets that Laxus [[FeedItWithFire can recharge his magic thanks to it.]]
* WorfHadTheFlu: After being revived by Neinhart's Historia, he goes from being able to keep pace with and overpower a weakened Laxus to struggling to hold ground against Minerva. However, this is {{justified|Trope}} as Neinhart's Historia can't bring a person who is stronger than him back to their full strength.

[[folder:Jacob Lessio]]
!!"Assassin" Jacob Lessio
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Makoto Tamura (Japanese), Creator/BryanMassey (English)
[[quoteright:185:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/jacob_lessio_ft_2018.png]]

An expert assassin who has allegedly never failed a job. Jacob's magic, Stealth, is specialized assassination magic that allows him to perfectly conceal his entire presence, make the seen unseen, and vice versa.
----
* AccentAdaptation: He has a thick Cockney accent in the dub, likely to go with his Creator/JasonStatham-like appearance.
* AdaptationExpansion: The anime expands on how he was beaten by Mirajane in his final fight. After Irene's Universe One is dispelled with her suicide, Jacob becomes disadvantaged because the terrain warps back to normal, causing him to stumble into environmental obstacles that weren't previously there, and he can't allow himself to open his eyes to take stock of his surroundings without seeing Mirajane's ClothingDamage. He then resorts to using his {{Invisibility}} to confuse her before going in for a killing blow, but Mirajane is able to suss out his location by [[SeeTheInvisible noticing his footprints in the grass as he rushes her]] and gut-punches him with a final full-powered strike with her Satan Soul.
* AffablyEvil: For a ruthless assassin, he is respectful and considerate towards his own comrades, taking on the guild alone in a show of respect to August, preparing to step in and aid God Serena without a word when the Emperors briefly get him on the ropes, and attempting to avenge God Serena's [[spoiler:potential]] death at Acnologia's hand before August reminds Jacob he's out of his league. He is also cordial towards Fairy Tail before wiping them out, offering to have a last drink with them before he wipes them all out in one fell swoop.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Not only is he a snazzy dresser, but he's one of the only wizards after the second TimeSkip to give Natsu an even fight in the physical department.
* BaldOfEvil: Bonus points for having a [[FacialMarkings skull tattoo on his forehead]].
* CharacterTics:
** Whenever he's getting ready to step into combat, he adjusts his gloves.
** Whenever he's faced with a half-naked woman, he instinctively squeezes his eyes and puckers his lips.
* ColdBloodedTorture: He inflicts this on Mavis, [[BeyondTheImpossible of all people]], to get her to spill where Fairy Heart is located. When Lucy shows up to save her, he decides to dismember Lucy instead.
* CreepyShadowedUndereyes: They emphasize his cold, ruthless personality.
* DarkIsEvil: Wears dark clothes and wields ''assassination magic'', along with being one of the enemies top men.
** Subverted in ''100 Years Quest'' where he's since become an advisor to Ajeel.
* FingerGun: He can fire magic bullets from his fingers.
* ForgotAboutHisPowers: [[PleasePutSomeClothesOn Problems with Mirajane aside]], in the manga he is never seen using his invisibility powers to gain an advantage over her as he did with Natsu and Lucy, [[AdaptationExpansion though the anime reveals he actually did so at least by the final phase of their fight]]. He also seems to have forgotten his ability to warp several people into a different dimension, completely at his mercy, just by clapping.
* HeelFaceTurn: Brandish reveals in ''100 Years Quest'' that Jacob has changed his ways since the war between Alvarez and Ishgal and now works as an advisor and confidant to Ajeel.
* IWorkAlone: Downplayed. He has no qualms fighting alongside his fellow 12 as needed, but he usually acts on his own and doesn't command any subordinates like the others. It's also {{justified|Trope}} since moving about freely and undetected is key to his profession as an assassin.
* {{Invisibility}}: His Stealth magic gives him this ability. Not only that, but [[StealthExpert he can also hide his scent, any sound he makes, and all of his equipment, including clothes and weapons]]. He can also use this power to SeeTheInvisible, including Mavis's spirit.
* KungFuWizard: He is a skilled hand-to-hand combatant.
* MadeOfIron: He's so resilient, he's barely phased when Natsu and Lucy manage to land a kick to his face that would otherwise send a man flying, and later takes hits from [[SuperStrength Lucy's Star Dress: Taurus]] and Natsu that send him crashing through tables and support pillars of the guild hall with minimal injuries. It takes Natsu hitting him dead on with Fire Dragon King's Demolition Fist to take him down, and the worst it does is [[ClothingDamage burn off his clothes]] and knock him unconscious.
* MaximumFunChamber: He can use [[SpaceMaster spatial magic]] called Transport to send the entire Fairy Tail guild to a pocket dimension that reportedly leaves them on the brink of death.
* NoCelebritiesWereHarmed: Mashima states that his design was loosely based on one of his favorite celebrities. Fans have suggested Creator/JasonStatham; Creator/{{Funimation}} seems to agree, as the dub gives him a Cockney accent.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: He has a prominent forehead, long jaw, and noticeable cheekbones paired with comparatively small eyes and mouth and no eyebrows. It's a combination not often seen on ''Fairy Tail'' characters.
* OneLastSmoke: When he arrives at Fairy Tail, he sits down and orders "the stiffest drink" they've got. When they refuse, he says he was going to share one last drink with them before they all die. Doubles as a BadassBoast.
* PermaStubble: The entire lower half of his face is covered in a five-o-clock shadow.
* PleasePutSomeClothesOn: Zig-zagged. Jacob seems to think that laying a naked woman is such a sinful act that he forces Natsu to look at Lucy while her clothes are invisible to torture him, whereas he can't bear to look himself. However, Natsu states that he's seen her naked so many times that it doesn't exactly phase him.
* PowerPerversionPotential: Played with. He can render peoples' clothing invisible, but unlike [=DiMaria=], he gets ''extremely'' uncomfortable [[PleasePutSomeClothesOn seeing naked women]], so much so that he's shocked to find out this doesn't apply to everyone else.
* ProfessionalKiller: He is a self-proclaimed assassination expert, and is said to have never failed a single job in his life.
* SeeTheInvisible: Gets this on both ends. On top of letting him turn invisible, his Stealth magic allows him to see what the naked eye cannot. This includes Mavis's projected spirit, which can normally only be perceived by those with Fairy Tail's emblem. On the other hand, Loke is able to uncover his presence by shining light on him, and the anime reveals Mirajane defeats him because she notices the footprints he leaves behind on the grass showing his location while he is unaware of her noticing courtesy of keeping his eyes closed at the time.
* StealthExpert: He is renowned for his assassination skills thanks to his ability to completely mask his own presence. For bonus points, the magic is actually called "Stealth".
* TheStoic: He usually keeps a cool head and a straight face, as is required for an assassin. However, his frustration with Natsu and Lucy, not to mention his comical desperation to avert his eyes from naked people, show he's NotSoStoic.
* VillainousCheekbones: He has high and shallow cheekbones, and he's a self-professed master assassin.
* VillainousFriendship: He has a strong sense of camaraderie with the rest of the 12, shown when he attempts to avenge God Serena's [[spoiler:apparent]] death, invading Fairy Tail's guildhall alone out of respect for his elder August, and releasing Brandish and Marin when he realizes he accidentally caught them in his attack.
* WeaksauceWeakness: He's allergic to {{Fanservice}}. So, of course, he winds up fighting Fairy Tail, a guild where over half the major characters are {{Innocent|FanserviceGirl}}, {{Shameless|FanserviceGirl}}, and {{Reluctant Fanservice Girl}}s.
* WithMyHandsTied: He keeps up the fight with Mirajane, one of Fairy Tail's elites, with his eyes closed. Although he goes down eventually courtesy of a Satan Soul-enhanced gut punch, Mirajane notes it was a very taxing battle nevertheless. However, he does this not to prove what a badass he is, but so he wouldn't have to see her ClothingDamage-sustained, half-naked body. Amusingly, the anime reveals when Irene's Universe One was dispelled with her suicide, he accidentally smacked into a few surrounding trees while still closing his eyes because he didn't account for the landscape returning to normal.

!!"Eight-Dragon" God Serena
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Creator/KazuyukiOkitsu (Japanese), Creator/DavidMatranga (English)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/ft_godserena_anime.png]]
[[caption-width-right:350:[[labelnote:'''MAJOR SPOILER WARNING''']]https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/2022_09_15_0rg_kleki.png God Serena in X793[[/labelnote]]]]

The top-ranked of Ishgal's Ten Wizard Saints, who betrays his homeland and joins the Alvarez Empire to get a shot at killing Acnologia. God Serena is a Dragon Slayer like no other, combining the power of eight different dragon lacrimas in his body to use multiple elements at once. He later received the wakeup call of his life upon challenging Acnologia and learning firsthand why that was a fool's errand.
----
* AgentPeacock: His magic power is matched only by his sheer flamboyance. Considering he can beat the four strongest wizards beneath him in Ishgal without breaking a sweat, that's saying something. The attack names for his Dragon Slayer attacks also have incredibly flowery language, such as his [[BreathWeapon Gale Dragon's Moon Viewing Melodic Breeze]].
* AlwaysSomeoneBetter: He learned this the hard way when he dared to challenge Acnologia alone. [[spoiler:When he joined Gold Owl, he noted there were wizards even stronger than him in it, right before giving Gajeel a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown.]]
* AnimeHair: His hair looks like rabbit ears.
* AnswersToTheNameOfGod: "God" is half of his name, after all.
* TheArchmage: He is widely regarded as the strongest wizard on his home turf of Ishgal. He is also TheArchmage among Dragon Slayers, having mastered a total of eight different forms of Dragon Slayer magic.
* ArrogantKungFuGuy: This man will flamboyantly brag about his power and awesomeness to the point people think he's an absolute weirdo (and all but shrugs off said words as compliments). When other Emperors get their HeroicSecondWind, he takes a moment to state they "aren't completely pathetic." Hyberion also notes God Serena's hubris is exceptionally great.
* ArtificialHuman: [[spoiler:Postmortem, his natural body was transmuted into a doll that resembles a human on the outside and technically revived him, but right before dying a second time, the mechanical components under his skin are exposed.]]
* AttackAttackAttack: Enforced. His main method of beating someone is to spam his various Dragon Slayer magics in rapid sequence until his opponents are helpless before him. This usually works quite well, as his eight elements not only allow him to constantly rotate between offense and defense, they can trip up combatants who [[ElementalRockPaperScissors have weaknesses to one or more of his elemental abilities]]. [[spoiler:They can even ward off BeamSpam moves like Jellal's Grand Chariot by countering the individual strikes with eight dragon specters that consume the incoming salvos, and have enough unutilized heads left over to bite the attacker. Jellal counters with the nine stars of Orion, spectacularly one-upping his opponent.]]
* BackFromTheDead:
** {{Downplayed|Trope}}. After he's [[spoiler:initially]] killed by Acnologia, Neinhart makes a Historia of him to participate in the final assault against Fairy Tail. Unfortunately, this God Serena turns out to be weaker than he was in life, and so Gildarts beats him with virtually zero effort.
** [[spoiler:Played straight in ''100 Years Quest'', where God Serena returns alive and well as a member of Gold Owl, an alchemist guild. At first, he claims that Duke, the guild's master, found him and transmuted new body parts so he could survive, but Irene confirms that the real God Serena is still dead, using Neinhart's Historia as proof. It's eventually revealed that Duke used human transmutation on God Serena's corpse and augmented him into an ArtificialHuman doll.]]
* BadassBoast: Lets out one in response to August calling him "blessed by the dragon gods."
-->'''God Serena:''' Ain't no such thing as a dragon god. Or dragon kings. 'Cause anything like a dragon is toast when I get through with 'em!
* BaitAndSwitchCharacterIntro: When he first debuts, he appears to look stern with a DeathGlare, giving off the impression of being a NoNonsenseNemesis... Until he started talking and posing flamboyantly, revealing himself to be the AgentPeacock instead.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: His showboating makes him the PluckyComicRelief of the Spriggan 12, though this being from one who can mop the floor with the four Wizard Saints beneath him, Makarov is right to warn his guild to take him seriously.
* BlackEyesOfCrazy: His eyes turn pitch black when he releases his full power, and the first time he's seen doing this is when he starts wailing on the other Four Emperors using Cavern Dragon Slayer Magic with a [[SlasherSmile crazed grin]].
* BodyHorror: Acnologia tore his guts out. [[spoiler:Duke Barbaroa, an alchemist, fixed this by transmuting brand new body parts to replace the ones God Serena lost back inside him and sealed up his gaping wound, though this turned God Serena into a doll, as his healer lacked the means to truly replicate a human composition. When Jellal's Orion spell lands a direct hit, God Serena's synthetic flesh starts peeling off and his artificial body underneath is exposed, then Jellal reopens the wound Acnologia gave him, and God Serena goes God-bye-bye for God-good.]]
* BrightIsNotGood: Wears bright clothing and his eight Dragon Slayer Magics each emit a different colours. And he's a member of the final antagonists with the Spriggan 12.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: He's a classic AgentPeacock who is also considered the strongest wizard on his home continent. [[spoiler:His astounding level of skill and abilities and brutal method of fighting, contrasted only by his constant pontificating, lands him a place within Gold Owl.]]
* BloodKnight: It's all but stated the whole reason he defected to Alvarez was for the glory of battling Acnologia himself. When the other Emperors get their HeroicSecondWind against him, he starts unleashing his Dragon Slayer magic with a SlasherSmile for the history books and only asks if he "overdid it" when August tells him to stop.
* CatchPhrase: "God-bye-bye." Or "God-hello." It occasionally turns into a VerbalTic, too (e.g., "no-God-way").
* CharacterShilling: In the anime, after God Serena lays waste to the other Emperors during their first clash, Wolfheim weakly notes in disbelief that he's grown more powerful since abandoning Ishgal for Alvarez. This statement doesn't occur in the manga, where Wolfheim is simply taken aback by God Serena's power instead, and only serves to play up God Serena's threat before [[TheWorfEffect Acnologia kills him]]. [[spoiler:This changes when God Serena reappears in ''100 Years Quest'', brought BackFromTheDead as an ArtificialHuman who lives up to the hype by utterly ravaging Gajeel with very little effort.]]
* ColorCodedForYourConvenience: In the anime, [[ShapingYourAttacks the eight dragons he summons are color-coded based on the magic element they possess]]: red, orange, yellow, green, sky-blue, blue, purple, and white.
* CombatPragmatist: Whenever God Serena uses his [[DishingOutDirt Cavern Dragon Slayer Magic]], it's usually not necessarily for attack damage but rather to destroy his opponent's footing, opening them up to the following sequence of Dragon Slayer Magics.
* ComboPlatterPowers: The Dragon Slayer with the most diverse collection of magics, standing at a whopping eight (Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Thunder, Stone, Light, and Darkness) when even the most talented Ishgal-native Dragon Slayers have two at best or temporarily borrowed more. God Serena even knows how to mix and match his powers to gain the upper hand in battle.
* CurbStompBattle:
** The other Emperors of Ishgal and Jura stand no chance against him, and they outnumber him four-to-one. He himself is immediately crushed by Acnologia soon afterward.
** His [[ReplacementGoldfish Historia]] goes through the same thing: he nearly wipes out Natsu and the gang, only to get the tables turned on him by Gildarts, who reasons he's weaker than the original God Serena was.
** [[spoiler:Just his Stone Dragon Slayer magic (which can take the form of diamond) is enough to trump Gajeel's Iron Dragon Slayer magic with a single physical hit (as diamond is harder than iron) and when Gajeel tries to use the Shadow Dragon Slayer magic he got from Rogue, God Serena cancels it out with Light Dragon Slayer magic. Before Gajeel can even catch his breath, God Serena sics his multiple Dragon Slayer magics in rapid succession on him and we finally learn why the next-strongest Wizard Saints had no chance against him. A badly-wounded Gajeel has to settle for a sneak attack on Serena to [[NoMacGuffinNoWinner snatch the Dogra Core from him without his knowledge]].]]
* DramaticIrony:
** All of his major fights while alive are against current or former Magic Council members he became enemies with. [[spoiler:While he demolishes the top four Wizard Saints below him and batters and bruises Gajeel, the one who actually defeats him for good is a former Wizard Saint like God Serena that betrayed the ranks to further his wicked agenda at the time, Jellal.]]
** He touts himself as godlike but is very cringey, cruel, and vain. [[spoiler:He receives his own Heavenly judgment from Jellal's newly-revealed Orion spell, a man who was corrupted into being evil but did a 180, and became noble, serious, and humble- far more deserving of a resemblance to divinity.]]
* TheDreaded: Despite his flamboyance, he was regarded with awe and fear when Jura and Levy are shocked to hear his defection to the Alvarez Empire, and his former fellow Emperors of Ishgal are terrified of his power when he overpowered them twice.
* DoNotTauntCthulhu: He tries to trash talk Acnologia to start a fight with him, only to get instantly eviscerated for his troubles.
* ElementalPowers: He can use a total of eight different dragon elements ([[DishingOutDirt Earth]], [[PlayingWithFire Fire]], [[MakingASplash Water]], [[BlowYouAway Air]], [[ShockAndAwe Thunder]], [[GemstoneAssault Stone]], [[LightEmUp Light]], and [[CastingAShadow Darkness]]) and can combine two or more attacks simultaneously without having to switch between modes like Natsu and Gajeel. His "unique" Dragon Slayer moves simply involve [[AllYourPowersCombined using all eight dragons at once]].
* EvilCounterpart: He and Gildarts share a few similarities: both are regarded as the ultimate wizards of their respective affiliations (the Wizard Saints and Fairy Tail, respectively), and both prefer to spend time away from their allies. But whereas Gildarts always remains loyal to his guild and returns when the situation turns dire, God Serena outright betrays his allies for his own selfish desires. They are also both mauled in a hopeless matchup with Acnologia, though God Serena isn't quite as lucky as Gildarts.
* FaceHeelTurn: He served as one of Ishgal's Ten Wizard Saints before he eventually defected to the Alvarez Empire to take a shot at Acnologia.
* FangsAreEvil: Once he starts using Dragon Slayer magic, his maniacal grins display large canines.
* FatalFlaw: His arrogance ultimately contributes to his demise at Acnologia's hands. [[spoiler:[[NotQuiteDead Or so it seemed.]]]]
* FauxAffablyEvil: When he meets his former comrades again, he casually greets them like an old friend as if he wasn't a traitor who is part of an invasion force hellbent on wiping out his former home country.
* FearlessFool:
** He saw himself as vastly superior to ''any'' opponent because he had a [[SuperpowerLottery menagerie of Dragon Slayer magics]] in his arsenal that earned him the top rank among wizards in Ishgal. However, that wasn't enough for him; he wanted to supplant Acnologia. Banking on reputation alone, he thought he had a chance to be the Dragon King. Then, when the inevitable showdown came, he showed absolutely no hesitation front of Acnologia, ignorant of how outclassed he was facing an almost unparalleled force of death and bloodsport, and treated him like just another stepping stone. God Serena didn't even realize Acnologia wasn't interested in a fever-pitched fight; he arrived just to effortlessly maul and murder a really offensive source of dragon magic and move on, because he's the most infamous dragon killer of Earthland itself. Like so, God Serena went down without the slightest chance to make a move.
** [[spoiler:Subverted with Enny Signario, who is so tough even an indirect death threat from her makes him downright terrified.]]
* TheFriendNobodyLikes: He's not well-regarded by his fellow Spriggan 12. Brandish thinks he's a jackass, whereas Ajeel thinks invading Ishgal will be a walk in the park if ''he's'' the best they had to offer. Even before his defection, he was described by Makarov as a profound disappointment and impossible to like as a person. [[spoiler:Even as a member of Gold Owl, no one thinks very highly of him, with Enny Signario finding him annoying to the point of wanting to kill him for failing a job and Kotetsu telling him to stop thinking of himself as a big shot. Only Rousseau Signario treats him with any kind of flattery, taking his antics in stride, and Sai who regards him as "God Brother" and is partners with the former top Wizard Saint.]]
* AGodAmI: The word "god" is literally in his name, and he seems to have taken his position as the strongest of the "Four Emperors/Gods of Ishgal" rather literally. He also says things like "God Bye-bye" and "God Hello" with a straight face.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: Has one right across his nose. It's the one sign that he's not truly unstoppable and has a reckless side.
* HeroKiller: He's regarded with a mixture of awe and terror by his fellow Emperors of Ishgal, and he shows exactly why once they face him in combat after he single-handedly kicks their asses with little effort. This is after he lays waste to the entire nation of Bosco and their magic guilds.
* HistoryRepeats: [[spoiler:Jellal kills God Serena once and for all by ripping through the right side of his doll body, just like Acnologia killed the man in his formerly human state.]]
* IOweYouMyLife: [[spoiler:An alchemist from the guild Gold Owl found God Serena left for dead and managed to revive him. Out of gratitude, he joined the guild and quietly escaped to Guiltina, where they're based.]]
* InformedAbility: He is reputed to have eight forms of Dragon Slayer magic, but only showed off five of them in the original manga (with one of them only implied since he didn't fire off a spell with it). [[spoiler:He finally gets to show them all in ''100 Years Quest''.]]
* KickThemWhileTheyAreDown:
** When he hears Warrod softly stating that he wanted to see Mavis' smile one more time, God Serena decides he'll kill the badly wounded old man first with a smile and an arrogant "God Bye-bye," which is only prevented by Warrod going on the attack [[DoNotGoGentle fully expecting it'll be his last fight.]]
** [[spoiler:During his fight with Gajeel, he mocks his foe's apparent last words (with it implied he said Levy's name) by cruelly saying she won't see him again.]]
** [[spoiler: He subjects Jellal under the power of Dark Dragon Slayer Magic after brutally beating him down, mockingly telling his former fellow Wizard Saint to be consumed by his sins. This backfires on him when Jellal forgives himself and uses his Heavenly Body Magic to purify the darkness attack from God Serena.]]
* KilledMidSentence: He challenges Acnologia to fight him, only to be [[CurbStompBattle curb-stomped]] to death mid-sentence. [[spoiler:Later averted when Duke, a Gold Owl alchemist specializing in human transmutation, saved him from the touch of death.]]
* LackOfEmpathy: God Serena doesn't care about who he's fighting. If they stand in his way of his ambitions, good person or bad person, he'll eagerly pulverize them and let them know how inferior they are... and the scary thing is, God Serena ''knows'' he has the skills to prove it. However, he's learned not to drop his guard in battle, which has turned him into a much more unrelenting foe who leaves nothing to chance.
* LogicalWeakness: It's not really about countering each of his elements individually, but dealing with the number he has at his disposal. [[spoiler:Magic at or above his level can cancel out his eight dragon attacks, but must strike each dragon, or the remainder will harm his opponent; a spell that hits ''nine'' times was enough to overpower and vanquish him.]]
* MythicalMotifs:
** Dragons, given his nature as a Dragon Slayer.
** Interestingly, his eight different Dragon Slayer Magics unleashed together makes him appear as an Orochi.
* NormalFishInATinyPond: God Serena is the top Wizard Saint of Ishgal, meaning he was publicly considered the strongest mage on the whole continent and a god amongst men, and he's appropriately proud of that. However, among the ranks of the mages of Alakitasia he's only considered one of the top 12 and weaker than at least three of them (August, Irene, and Larcade), and he's still nothing before [[WorldsStrongestMan Acnologia]]. [[spoiler:By ''100 Years Quest'', despite having another year to get stronger, he still admits he's weaker than three members of his new guild Gold Owl of Guiltina, those being its guild master, Duke Barbaroa, and the Signario Sisters, and comments that he's now very aware of just how big the world actually is and how low-level Ishgal is by comparison. He also acts like a sycophant around Enny and Rousseau Signario to stay on their good sides, but Enny casually asks Duke's permission to kill him after he screws up a mission.]]
* NotQuiteDead: When Acnologia shreds through God Serena's body, he's outright dead on the spot, and Neinhart also makes a Historia copy of God Serena, which hinges on the person being dead. [[spoiler:However, Duke was passing through, found him, discovered that the wizard was worth bringing back from the dead, and revived him as a pseudo-human doll.]]
* OddNameOut: The elements in his [[CallingYourAttacks attack names]] have a more embellished naming sense than the other Dragon Slayers', such as [[DishingOutDirt Cavern Dragon]], [[PlayingWithFire Purgatory Dragon]], [[MakingASplash Sea King Dragon]], [[BlowYouAway Gale Dragon]], and [[LightEmUp Flash Dragon]].
** Only his Lightning Dragon Slayer Magic, Diamond Dragon Slayer Magic, and Dark Dragon Slayer Magic are not embellished, which stands them out.
* OlderAndWiser: [[spoiler:In ''100 Years Quest'', he regrets lowering his guard in front of Acnologia and has learned from it, but he still retains all his flashy operatic mannerisms.]]
* OnlyMostlyDead: [[spoiler:{{Subverted|Trope}}. Acnologia really did fatally injure God Serena, and Serena claims he would have died from his injuries untreated. Only a passing member of Gold Owl who came across his body, realized he was still salvageable, and then brought him back to the guild to have his lost body parts transmuted, which saved his life. Irene's revelation of Neinhart's Historia ''needing'' their subject to be dead, however, indicates that Serena truly died and his "transmutation" actually involved some manner of resurrection. It's later uncovered that his flesh and bones were changed into an artificial body that raised his durability, but can still be destroyed if powerful magic rips through it.]]
* OvershadowedByAwesome: He completely wastes the four Wizard Saints ranked below him, and yet he doesn't last five seconds against Acnologia.
* PowerOfTheVoid: Easily the most insidious magic at God Serena's disposal is Dark Dragon Slayer Magic. [[spoiler:It consumes the target by forcing them to relive the painful ordeals they've faced in the past and converts the guilt they feel from major sins into darkness that shreds and devours their body away. However, someone who has overcome their traumas of the past can cleanse the darkness away using a light or heavenly-based magic of their own, like Jellal's Heavenly Body Magic.]]
* PrideBeforeAFall: His BadassBoast over how there's no such thing as a Dragon King happens moments before Acnologia shows up to kill him off. [[spoiler:He got ''very'' lucky that just the right person to save/restore his life came along when they did, because everyone else thought he was dead.]]
* RedBaron: He has two titles--"Hybrid Theory" and "Eight-Dragon"--both based on the fact that he has eight different Dragon Slayer magic lacrimas implanted in his body. He was also once known as "The Man Loved By Dragon Gods".
* ShapingYourAttacks: One of his unnamed techniques involves creating eight massive serpentine dragons from his power befitting his epithet that resembles an {{Orochi}}.
* SlasherSmile: His usually smug smile twists into a demented grin when he unleashes his full power on the Four Emperors of Ishgal.
* SmugSuper: He's a powerful being, yes, but it's clear his moniker has gone to his head. He's so conceited, he throws in "God Bye-bye" when he's about to finish off his opponents. Too bad for him, Acnologia doesn't have time for blowhards.
* SuperStrength: [[spoiler:During his fight with Jellal in Gold Owl, God Serena grabs his foe and throws him to the earth hard enough to punch through several dozen feet of solid rock ''without'' using a spell. Even Jellal is amazed by this.]]
* SuperToughness:
** [[spoiler:His Stone Dragon Slayer Magic grants him supernatural toughness in the form of diamond that greatly surpasses Gajeel's Iron Dragon Slayer Magic's offense and defense. He can even instinctively turn parts of his body into diamond for defense. Even without actively using it though, he's tough enough to withstand a direct hit from Jellal's Grand Chariot long enough to counter with his own magic.]]
** [[spoiler:God Serena's postmortem revival into a doll gave him further durability, enough to block and counter Jellal's signature spell. However, Jellal busts out the even stronger Orion and God Serena's body can't withstand it - despite getting reinforced into a doll - and subsequently died once again by being torn apart.]]
* TalkingIsAFreeAction: A rare aversion in this series. When he issues a challenge to Acnologia, his foe casually kills him in the middle of his speech. [[spoiler:Almost.]]
* TooDumbToLive: God Serena may be one of the most powerful wizards in the ''Fairy Tail'' universe, but intentionally trash-talking Acnologia instead of going right on the offensive with his Dragon Slayer magic was only going to end one way, and not in his favor.
* TokenWizard: [[spoiler:As a member of Gold Owl, he's the only wizard among a guild of alchemists.]]
* UnderestimatingBadassery:
** God Serena greatly underestimates Acnologia's prowess as a Dragon King to his face, which leads to the former's [[spoiler:near]] demise.
** [[spoiler:Gajeel in turn underestimates him, thinking this [[AgentPeacock weirdo]] isn't that impressive and blowing off his victory over the other Emperors of Ishgal. Serena proceeds to overpower Gajeel's own attacks and kicks his ass.]]
* UndignifiedDeath: For a man of God Serena's powers, being ripped apart by a dragon is not a nice way to go. [[spoiler:Having an alchemist to revive you helps, though. And even then, he still manages to antagonize another powerful opponent and be torn apart a second time, with interest.]]
* UnknownRival: He's under the impression he is the ultimate Dragon Slayer who will surpass and kill Acnologia. Acnologia's only interest in him is in the fact he's a Dragon Slayer in general and that's because Acnologia [[GottaKillEmAll is going to kill them all]]. Acnologia doesn't let Serena finish his boasting before killing him and remarking that he still has more to kill.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: He's introduced at the war council with Zeref, and his next appearance has him easily defeating the four Wizard Saints below him... only to get unceremoniously killed off by Acnologia shortly after while only hinting at his motivations to betray Ishgal for Alvarez being for the glory of getting a chance to fight the Dragon King. His Historia doesn't fare much better, only getting a brief scuffle with Natsu and the gang before Gildarts shows up to clean his clock and being the first of the Historia Spriggan 12 to fall, whereas Bloodman and Wall at least last up to near Neinhart's own defeat. [[spoiler:''100 Years Quest'' proves differently when the would-be dead man returns totally okay and even more intimidating than before.]]
* WhamShot: [[spoiler:At the end of chapter 114 of ''100 Years Quest'', he shows up ''alive''. The surprise is almost totally unexpected, with a plea from a defeated Sai calling out to his ''God''-brother serving as the hint he's come back.]]
* WorldsStrongestMan: A {{subverted|Trope}} example. He has all the makings for being in the running for the strongest mortal man, being TheArchmage and the mightiest of the Ten Wizard Saints, but amongst the Spriggan 12, there are several who could call themselves his equal and he's still considered weaker than his superior August. Then he makes the mistake of trying to take on the real WorldsStrongestMan in Acnologia, [[CurbStompBattle and he doesn't last five seconds]]. [[spoiler:He himself admits this to Gajeel in ''100 Years Quest'', noting that he's not even the strongest member of Gold Owl and that it's made him realize [[NormalFishInATinyPond how big the world really is and low-leveled Ishgal is]]. He then follows up by giving Gajeel a NoHoldsBarredBeatdown to emphasize that, strongest man or not, he's ''still'' a deadly foe who shouldn't be underestimated.]]
* TheWorfEffect: He easily dishes out a one-sided battle to the other Four Emperors, only to die at the hands of Acnologia, who rips out a chunk of his rib cage before he can process what happened. Later, just as it seems his Historia will make up for his loss, he turns out to be quite a bit weaker than when he was alive, and he is promptly one-shotted by Gildarts without so much as a mild challenge.
* WorfHadTheFlu: His Historia seems poised to make up for God Serena's death against Acnologia when he overwhelms Fairy Tail's strongest team. Then Gildarts shows up and makes quick work of him, reasoning that he's not anywhere near as tough as the real God Serena was. [[spoiler:Gajeel later bumps into the ressurected wizard and fellow Dragon Slayer in Dogramag's labyrinth, who had a year to grow even stronger, and proceeds to get wrecked upon picking a fight.]]

!!Imperial Military

The Spriggan 12 don't just serve as the Emperor's bodyguards; they are also the commanders of his army, each leading a division of soldiers and subcommanders. Despite their significantly lower rank and power compared to their superiors, these wizards are surprisingly capable against Fairy Tail's strongest.

[[folder:Imperial Military in General]]
* ConservationOfNinjutsu: Zigzagged. They are much more numerous, stronger and disciplined than previous Mooks, something Fairy Tail acknowledges. Despite this, most are seen being defeated quite easily by the protagonists. This doesn't apply to certain individuals, however, such as Marin, who has the upper hand against Natsu and Gray.
* EliteMooks: Many seem to be either this or BossInMookClothing when compared to villains from the previous arc.
* MilitaryMage: Again, they're all officially part of Alvarez's military force.
* PunchClockVillain: Much like most of the Spriggan 12, while some of them may be arrogant or thirsty for battle, most of them are just dutiful soldiers that will fight for their emperor till the end.

!!Marin Hollow
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Tomohiro Yamaguchi (Japanese), Tyler Carson (English)
[[quoteright:290:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/marin_ft_2018.png]]

A member of the Brandish Squad, and a master of Spatial Magic. Marin has a tendency to refer to everything going on around him as if it's a part of some sort of attractiveness test, where he rewards those who "pass" (usually women), and wails on those who "fail" (usually men).
----
* AnimeHair: A scruffy hairdo propped up by sunglasses.
* AntiMagic: He can negate other Spatial Magic such as Erza's requip and Lucy's spirit summoning.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Which he wears without a tie, and with a popped collar.
* ButtMonkey: Brandish treats him like one, shrinking him to make him paint her toes, and then picking him up ''with'' her toes to carry him off to the war council.
* CasanovaWannabe: He is obsessed with sending any young woman he meets to his "relaxation space", and he shamelessly attempts to hit on Brandish, his superior officer.
* CheshireCatGrin: Whenever he's in a good mood, and that's usually when there are young women around.
* DeusExitMachina: His ability to stop spacial magic, which includes summoning of any kind, is very powerful. So he is kept shrunk down by Brandish and gets squashed easily.
* TheDogBitesBack: Fed up with the way Brandish treats him like a pet, he attempts strangling her to death while she's chained up with PowerNullifier cuffs in Fairy Tail's dungeon.
* GameFace: His change from a CheshireCatGrin to an apeshit crazy face is so abrupt, it sends chills down Natsu and Gray's spines.
* GiantFootOfStomping: Lucy stomps on him while he was shrunken, instantly taking him out of the fight and allowing her and Erza to use their powers again.
* MistreatmentInducedBetrayal: It was ultimately Brandish's mistreatment of him with her shrinking magic that caused Marin to try to murder her when she was powerless.
* MoodSwinger: To the point of having a SplitPersonality. To those he deems worthy of "passing his tests", he's nothing but polite and friendly, teleporting them to a "relaxation dimension" to remove them from a fight. To those who "fail", he turns into an AxCrazy SirSwearsALot. Who passes or fails seems to be based on nothing more than gender.
* NumberTwo: He is a top officer of the Brandish Squad, second only to Brandish herself.
* SayItWithHearts: At least until someone fails his "tests".
* SpaceMaster: He's so strong that he can shut down Erza's requip and Lucy's summons simply by controlling the space around him and denying others access to it. When Lucy has Gemini copy and use his magic, it can counter Jacob's own spatial magic.
* SycophanticServant: Subverted. He seems to remain loyal to Brandish despite her constant mistreatment of him, but he takes the opportunity to kill her for it the moment one presents itself.
* TeleportSpam: Natsu and Gray can't get a hit on him because of this.
* WakeUpCallBoss: Him {{No Sell}}ing Lucy and Erza and proceeding to kick Natsu and Gray's asses just goes to show that their post-second TimeSkip free ride is unambiguously over and that Alvarez is the real deal.
* WeakButSkilled: His ability is quite troublesome for the protagonists and can affect the magic of Spriggan 12 member Jacob, but in terms of magical power, he's weak enough that Lucy can use Gemini to copy his powers, something she can only use on those who are at or below her level of power.
* WhosLaughingNow: After getting pushed around long enough, he makes sure Brandish [[TheDogBitesBack knows it]] right when she's incapable of defending herself.
* TheWorfEffect: He's the first guy able to actually give Natsu's team a hard time after the second TimeSkip. Brandish makes such short work of him that it pretty effectively establishes the strength of the Spriggan 12 as really being as strong as, if not stronger than, Ishgal's strongest wizards.

[[folder:Bakel]]
!!Bakel
!!!'''Voiced by:''' Taro Kiuchi (Japanese), Dave Woodard (English)
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/bakel.png]]

One of the top enforcers of the Ajeel Squadron. He isn't particularly bright, favoring brute force over strategy.
----
* BloodKnight: Like his boss, Bakel doesn't care about devising battle tactics and just wants to get his hands dirty.
* CurbStompBattle: The only reason Natsu really struggles against Bakel is that he's intentionally holding back to conserve energy, something Happy notes. When Bakel attempts to sneak-attack Natsu after faking being defeated, Natsu shows just how much he was holding back by shrugging the blow off before sending him [[ATwinkleInTheSky flying]] with pure physical power and no Dragon Slayer Magic augmenting it.
* DumbMuscle: The other members of the Ajeel division lament that brute force is all Bakel is good for. When one of his men asks how he intends to break through Fried's barrier after ordering his troops to charge it, Bakel quite plainly states he's got no clue and ''laughs''.
* ScarfOfAsskicking: Bakel wears a scarf on his face, rather than around his neck, covering his eyes. He also mentions he likes Natsu's scarf.
* SlasherSmile: The teeth-like markings around his mouth give him a pretty intimidating grin.
* SuperStrength: His main claim to fame, and to his credit he can give a holding-back Natsu some trouble. Not so much once Natsu stops playing around.
* ATwinkleInTheSky: Bakel tries a sneak attack on Natsu after he's seemingly defeated the first time. Natsu blocks it and sends him flying right into and ''through'' Ajeel's ship as a result with a single uppercut.

!!!'''Voiced by:''' Shinichiro Kamio (Japanese), Brad Kurtz (English)
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/kareem.png]]

Another of the Ajeel Squadron's top enforcers. He is wiser than his counterpart, Bakel.
----
* CastingAShadow: Kareem shoots black energy at his enemies.
* JustFollowingOrders: Despite personally admitting he thinks the all-out assault on Fairy Tail is overkill, he also notes it's a soldier's job to carry out said duties regardless.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: After being taken down, Kareem decides to [[FakingTheDead play dead]] a little longer when Natsu [[CurbStompBattle sends Bakel flying]].
* StraightMan: Kareem is much more restrained than Bakel, and considers the Empire's all-out assault on Fairy Tail to be overkill.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Four Heraldry Knights]]
%%!!!'''Voiced by:'''

A group of knights who serve on the Neinhart Division.
----
* BodyguardingABadass: They are the bodyguards of one of the twelve wizards that can match the strongest wizard of Ishgal.
* CurbStompBattle: The first two don't get a chance to attack before Erza and Kagura, who aren't in the mood to play around, plow through them. The next two last a little longer since they waited to launch a surprise attack, but they swiftly join their fellows when Jellal comes in with the save.
* DubNameChange: They're called the "Four Crest Knights" by Funimation.
* EpicFlail: The TopHeavyGuy carries one of these.
* FourIsDeath: Subverted. They nearly get the drop on Erza and Kagura by virtue of two more remaining after the first two are cut down, but among the Empire's ranks, they go down faster than anyone.
* GoThroughMe: They try (and pathetically fail) to stop Erza, Kagura, and Jellal from advancing to the harbor where Neinhart is waiting.
* NoNameGiven: They're taken out before we get to learn their names.
* TopHeavyGuy: One of them has a noticeably muscled upper body with a comparatively small pair of legs.
* TheWorfEffect: The other warriors of their rank at least pose a modicum of a challenge for Fairy Tail, who greatly hold back to conserve their strength, but Erza, Kagura and Jellal just plow through these guys.

[[caption-width-right:350:Left: Heine; Right: Juliet]]

Two members of the Irene Division. Heine is a short-tempered ninja dressed in all-black who can ensnare enemies in ribbon, while Juliet is a cheerful girl dressed in all-white who can douse people in acidic slime.
----
* BodyguardingABadass: They are soldiers and escorts of Irene, one of the two strongest members of the Spriggan 12, making them this by default.
* {{Cloudcuckoolander}}: When listening to Irene's story about a white and black maiden, Juliet asks if she can be the black maiden despite clearly being white.
* GirlishPigtails: Juliet has twin tails tied in ribbon.
* HeartIsAnAwesomePower: Juliet's slime and Heine's ribbons sound like pathetic abilities on paper, but their properties do some serious damage against Mirajane.
* {{Jerkass}}: Heine takes every opportunity to berate and insult Juliet, which usually [[{{Cloudcuckoolander}} goes straight over Juliet's head]].
* KickChick: Juliet's preferred method of hitting her opponents.
* LivingWeapon: They are actually white and black swords, respectively, that were brought to life by Irene and given [[HumanityEnsues human form]].
* OnlySaneEmployee: Heine thinks of herself as this to Irene, given the kind of {{Cloudcuckoolander}} she has to work with.
* PerkyFemaleMinion: Juliet irritates Heine with her cheeriness and blatant disrespect for authority.
* RedOniBlueOni: The white and sunny Juliet is the Red, while the black and sullen Heine is the Blue.
* ShockAndAwe: Heine can electrify her ribbons to shock opponents.
* SmashSisters: Juliet and Heine take their opponents on together, usually to see which of them can beat them first.
* SolarAndLunar: Their names, outfits, and personalities reflect the sun and moon, respectively.
* StickySituation: Juliet douses her enemies with slime, which can not only slow them down but also sear their skin.
* {{Stripperific}}: Heine dresses in a skin-tight SpyCatsuit, with fishnets that show the skin of her sides extending from her breasts down to her thighs.
* SuperToughness: To their credit, they're tough enough to tank Mirajane's Satan Soul's [[KamehameHadoken Evil Explosion]] attack and come out with only minor injuries that don't slow them down. Mirajane's Satan Soul: Algeria, on the other hand, is far too out of their league of being able to withstand.
* UnderestimatingBadassery: They underestimate Mirajane in a fight, calling her a mere "appetizer" in the presence of "main course" opponents like Makarov, and thinking [[SoLastSeason her ordinary Satan Soul is actually her trump card]].
