The host of the hotel and Princess of Hell, Charlie is an altruist demon of unparalleled kindness who's willing to offer Hell's lowest of the low a chance to change for the better. Regardless of how many damned souls ridicule her dream, she's determined to make a humane way of reducing the population a reality.
----
* ZeroPercentApprovalRating: Despite being demonic royalty, Charlie receives very little respect from the denizens of Hell and is constantly mocked for her positive worldview. [[spoiler:Subverted in the Season 1 finale, where the residents of Hell, even [[{{Jerkass}} Katie Killjoy]], appear to be showing her a lot more respect after defeating Adam and the Exorcists' attack on the Hotel, though with the [[BigDamnHeroes help of her father]].]]
* ActionGirl: In the season 1 finale, she proves that she is a very powerful combatant by fending off tons of Exorcists with her shield and magical blasts and goes into her true demon mode to injure Adam with her demonic trident and manages to successfully nullify and block a fully-powered punch from him with relative ease.
* AffectionateNickname: Vaggie gives a number of cute nicknames to express her love for Charlie. A few include are as listed: "Hun", "sweetie", "baby", "babe", etc.
* AllForNothing: [[spoiler:In "Dad Beat Dad", Lucifer manages to get her a meeting with the angels so she can plead her case that souls can be reformed. In "Welcome to Heaven", despite finally meeting angels that were seemingly far more reasonable than [[BigBadDuumvirate Adam and Lute]], they (or at least Sera) find that [[TheHedonist Angel Dust]] [[TookALevelInKindness making genuine strides to redeem himself]] isn't sufficient evidence that souls can be redeemed; in fact, they don't even ''know'' why souls make it to Heaven or Hell in the first place, only ''when''. Not only that, but Adam threatens that once the next [[FinalSolution Extermination]] begins, [[AndYourLittleDogToo he is going to personally visit the Hazbin Hotel to murder the residents there.]] The only silver lining is that Adam and Lute unwittingly exposed the existence of the Extermination to the rest of the angels, who are notably horrified, Emily in particular.]] [[spoiler:This ends up subverted in the finale proper, as while Adam manages to destroy the Hotel, they are able to rebuild it quickly afterwards, and killing Adam and calling off the Exorcism leads them to suffer only one casualty; Sir Pentious, who is immediately redeemed in Heaven, proving right to Sera's face that Charlie was right after all.]]
* AllLovingHero: She loves her people and is willing to do the impossible to help even the cruelest damned souls avoid a timely demise. When it's revealed that Sir Pentious was sent by Vox to spy on the hotel, Charlie immediately forgives him and offers him a second chance. [[spoiler:Part of why she was so hurt by Vaggie keeping her past a secret before Rosie helped her get past it is because to her, it was like Vaggie thought that Charlie wouldn't accept her past despite her having this trait.]] [[spoiler:This attitude even extends to the genocidal angel Adam. Despite hating his guts for the billions of deaths he's remorselessly caused, Charlie prevents her father from killing him after he gave Adam a beatdown, even feeling sympathy for Adam's suffering, and is in shock when he's ultimately killed by Niffty.]]
* AnimalMotifs: Dogs. Her nose looks like a snout, she has prominent canine teeth, and her friendliness and hyper-enthusiastic demeanour are traits commonly associated with {{Big Friendly Dog}}s.
* AntiAntichrist: Charlie, daughter of Lucifer and the Princess of Hell. Despite what her lineage may imply, she genuinely cares about her people, and wants to find a more humane way of dealing with its overpopulation. Moreover, unlike other characters, she hasn’t done anything horrible, despite ironically being born in Hell.
* ApologeticAttacker: In "The Show Must Go On", Charlie keeps saying ''"Sorry"'' everytime she blocks or attacks angels. A slightly exasperated Vaggie tells her that this isn't the time to be sorry. Charlie then promptly swings back the pendulum by shouting ''"Die motherfuckers!"'' while blasting them with her powers.
* ArbitrarilyLargeBankAccount: Charlie is princess of Hell and second only to Lucifer, so she has no problem with money, seen in episode six where she "persuades" Cherri Bomb to bring the other hotel guests and staff with her and Angel Dust on a night out by literally handing her a stack of cash. She can also easily afford to repair the hotel anytime it's damaged (which is often), only lamenting that it's tiresome.
* ArtEvolution: In the pilot, Charlie's hair was looser and had a single tie at the bottom, and her pupils were black except during certain moments where she transformed. In the "Music/{{Addict}}" video, her hair was tied up in a twice banded low ponytail, and her suit was a brighter red. In the show proper, Charlie has had more noticeable changes than the other characters with her hairstyle from "ADDICT" is retained and her outfit and pupils now permanently red.
* BadassAdorable: Charlie is a very cute, pretty, and sweet girl who also happens to be the 3rd most powerful being in all of Hell.
* BadassInANiceSuit: Charlie's usual attire is a tasteful, red suit and she's one of the most powerful people in the show. A [[FreezeFrameBonus background picture]] in "Dad Beat Dad" implies the upper portion of her suit originally belonged to her father.
* BadassInDistress: She gets strangled and overpowered by Adam in the season 1 finale requiring Lucifer to save her before Adam could get the killing blow on her. She returns the favor later on by blocking Lucifer from Adam's surprise sneak punch.
* BatmanGrabsAGun: Charlie starting to transform into her demonic form is one thing. [[spoiler:Charlie manifesting her DevilsPitchfork and actually ''stabbing'' someone with it]] is quite a sight to behold, given how pacifistic she is usually.
* BattleCouple: She and her girlfriend Vaggie fight side-by-side when [[spoiler:Adam and the Exterminators come to attack the Hotel]].
* TheBeautifulElite: She's second only to her father and mother in the Inferno's hierarchy and is quite pretty. Adam even calls her "Lilith's little hottie".
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: It's implied from their general interactions and relationship dynamic, as well as how hurt Charlie was by the idea that Vaggie didn't trust her, that she first fell in love with Vaggie because she was the first person who listened, supported and believed in Charlie's dreams and ideas. Given how everyone in Hell thought her plan to redeem Sinners was foolhardy, including her father, Vaggie was likely the first person in all of Hell to actively and steadfastly believe and help in Charlie's supposedly impossible dream.
* BenevolentBoss: Goes hand-and-hand with her AllLovingHero NiceGirl personality. Charlie is nothing but a fair, sweet-tempered employer to the Hazbin Hotel employees; by the final season 1 episode, she refers to them as her family.
* BerserkButton: Do '''not ''' insult her singing. In episode 7, she goes to Cannibal Town in order to gain more allies and has to deal with keeping her cool while enduring [[ScrewPolitenessImASenior Susan’s]] heckling. The second Susan badmouths her singing is when Charlie [[RageBreakingPoint drops her composure.]]
-->''(Talking at the same time)''\
'''Charlie:''' ''(singing)'' I...I have a dream and I--\
'''Susan:''' Boo! Get off. Where's the showmanship? Where's all the finesse? Fucking mediocre!\
'''Charlie:''' ''(FlippingTheBird)'' '''FUCK YOU, YOU OLD BITCH!!!'''
* BewareTheNiceOnes:
** Charlie is a polite and affable lady, but she doesn’t enjoy being mocked for her vision of rehabilitating souls. When Katie Killjoy provoked her enough in the pilot, Charlie fought her in a full-on brawl. Note that Charlie clearly has the ability to [[OneWingedAngel take on a more monstrous form]] (as demonstrated during her song "Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow"), and yet she still held her own against a transformed Katie without transforming herself. Similarly, she briefly turns demonic when Adam mocks her dream.
** When she finally sees just how badly Valentino abuses Angel in "[[Recap/HazbinHotelS1E4Masquerade Masquerade]]", she's so furious that she nearly confronts him in her full-demon form, who is only spared from what she ''could've'' done to him because Angel interjects to get rid of her.
--->'''Charlie:''' [[VoiceOfTheLegion What makes you think you can]] ''[[VoiceOfTheLegion TREAT HIM LIKE THAT!?]]''
** Charlie is more powerful than Alastor, who is TheDreaded even among the denizens of Hell. It's Charlie's temperament that holds her back from revealing her true power. [[spoiler:This is shown for the first time in "The Show Must Go On", where both Alastor and Charlie end up fighting against Adam at some point. While Alastor is forced to retreat, Charlie manages to both wound Adam with her pitchfork and do a PunchCatch on him when Adam tries to kill both her and Lucifer.]]
* BeyondRedemption: It's Charlie's goal to [[DefiedTrope defy]] this with the hotel. She believes that no demon is truly beyond help, and that anyone can be redeemed to Heaven if they put in the effort. Trouble is, very few people think she can succeed. Alastor is hanging around the hotel specifically because he thinks she'll fail, and it'll be fun to watch her squirm. Meanwhile, Adam (and all of Heaven, from the way he tells it) think demons are irredeemable monsters who they kill for sport, with Adam outright telling Charlie that her dream is impossible. [[spoiler:Even though she is right that sinners like Angel Dust can change for the better, it doesn't get him into Heaven since not even Heaven's leadership knows what it actually takes to get there in the first place. Ironically Adam is more irredeemable than the sinners he purges and ends up dying completely unrepentant, but even then, Charlie made a point to spare him and wasn't happy to see him killed.]]
* BigRedDevil: While her normal appearance lacks most of the associated traits beyond being dressed predominantly in red, when angry she grows the horns expected of the typical appearance, and her feet are hoofed rather than humanlike under the shoes. She even has the tail at her most demonic.
* BigSisterInstinct: When Vaggie is throwing the hotel’s staff and residents into an active war zone, Niffty demands to be tossed but Charlie yells, “Vaggie, no!” and grabs the tiny demon from her girlfriend.
* {{Bifauxnen}}: Downplayed since she doesn’t look or sound particularly androgynous, but she prefers suits over dresses, and also prefers the more traditionally masculine name of [[GenderBlenderName Charlie]].
* BlushSticker: A consistent part of her cute design is a permanent set of rosy cheeks. They even remain in her more demonic form, though in the pilot they are less noticeable due to her SlasherSmile pushing them behind her eyes. Charlie got these from her father.
* BornOfHeavenAndHell: Her mom is a human-turned-demon and her dad is a fallen angel.
* BreakTheCutie: It happens to her twice. First when all the people in the news station laugh at her idea of the hotel. The second time is the aftermath when, thanks to Angel, the Hotel's reputation is dragged through the mud even further. She even tried calling her mother for advice, despite the call not even going to voicemail, admitting she doesn’t know what she's doing or how to make her plan work.
** Episode 6 really puts her through the wringer. She not only learns that Heaven isn’t as great as she thought, but also that [[spoiler: Vaggie, her girlfriend, is a former Exorcist who has killed thousands of her people and never told her about it]].
* BriefAccentImitation: In the pilot, she takes a British one when promising Vaggie that "I'll just have to rely on my impeccable improv skills" instead of expressing herself through song. She does this again in "Masquerade" while telling Angel that she goes wherever she pleases.
* BullyingADragon: Charlie is usually disrespected and mocked by Hell's citizens. At the same time, she is an extremely powerful demonic PrettyPrincessPowerhouse who would probably tear most of them apart without breaking a sweat if she wasn't such a nice girl.
* BurningWithAnger: Downplayed. Charlie's demon form features hair that burns like fire and she gains a pair of horns when she's legitimately angry and lapses into it.
* CassandraTruth: Charlie's belief that sinners can redeem themselves is met with universal mockery in Hell and rejected by Heaven. Even most of the staff and the first guest at her hotel aimed at redemption don't believe in its mission statement. After all, in the long history of the universe not once has any sinner ascended to Heaven. [[spoiler: Sir Pentious popping into Heaven as an angel proves her right.]]
* CharacterDevelopment:
** The hardships, setbacks, and revelations Charlie is forced to go through has her mature from an extremely docile person who had a hard time being authoritative to a more assertive young woman not afraid to use her royal title in serious situations.
** While she has the best of intentions, Charlie's way of redeeming Sinners is more patronizing and insensitive than actually helpful. This flaw comes to its realistic setbacks when she inserts herself into Angel Dust's abusive relationship with Valentino despite not knowing the full story, with the patron angrily telling her to GetOut. After the emotional interaction, Charlie is left distraught at her actions and tells Husk to not ''force'' Angel back but to make sure he's safe, showing she's now learning to respect boundaries.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: Downplayed trope, especially compared to the likes of Vaggie or Niffty, but in the Pilot, Charlie is shown to be very sad deep down, as both her first song is about how she feels like a failure and that all her desires are ultimately unattainable as she sheds a few tears, she also cries during her call to Lillith in the aftermath of her interview, painting a picture of how lost Charlie feels. In the series, while Charlie is still prone to tears when emotional, she's also far more self-assured in herself, never voicing doubt on if she can achieve redemption for sinners but ''how'' she could.
* ChronicHeroSyndrome: As Alastor and Husk point out, Charlie prefers to try to resolve the extremely complicated and difficult issues involving Hell and Heaven rather than deal with her own personal problems (ie. her distant relationships with both her mom and dad).
-->'''Husk:''' Princess, is a bleeding heart who wants to solve everybody else's problems 'cept her own.
* CostumeEvolution: In the pilot her tuxedo had a red jacket with black trim, and black pants with red trim. In the series proper, her tux is all red, with dark red accents on the collar and sleeve cuffs, and she wears an untucked shirt underneath, a smaller bowtie and a name tag.
* CovertPervert: Charlie is a sweet, AllLovingHero demon in a committed and stable relationship with Vaggie. That being said, in a brief moment in her song, Charlie is shown holding up a demon's bra with a sly smile.
* CuteLittleFangs: She has some fangs that complement her cute look. It's one of the only outward signs that she isn't human. They're much more prominent in the series proper.
* TheCutie: Charlie’s an adorable, bubbly, naïve, song-loving NiceGirl of a princess, idealistic and lover of rainbows and puppies. She stands in stark contrast to the rest of Hell.
* TheCuckoolanderWasRight: Charlie's idea of having Sinners enter her hotel to achieve redemption, and the idea that they can redeem themselves in general, is met with apathetic indifference at best and utter derision at worst. [[spoiler:"The Show Must Go On" eventually proves Charlie right by having a newly-redeemed Sir Pentious rematerialize in front of Emily and Sera, proving that redeeming Sinners really is possible]].
* DaddyIssues: Initially. She's been estranged from both her parents since starting the hotel [[spoiler:(with Lucifer's surprised reaction to meeting Vaggie indicating Charlie never told her family about their relationship, let alone her orientation). In particular, it's shown she's had issues with her father for most of her life, especially his legacy. Upon reuniting in episode 5, the two eventually patch things up with Lucifer eventually backing up Charlie's cause as of the season 1 finale.]]
* DealWithTheDevil: While she's savvy enough to avoid making any binding contracts with Alastor regarding his patronage of the Hotel, instead just telling him to help for as long as he wants of his own free will since he's the one who came to her expressing interest, after being driven into a corner by the impending Extermination with no solution she's ultimately desperate enough to form a contract with him in exchange for information on how to defeat the Exorcists. Though she doesn't sell her soul thankfully, instead promising Alastor one favor that he may name at a future date, with the stipulation that she will not harm anyone during that request.
* DeconstructedCharacterArchetype: Charlie is basically the Franchise/DisneyPrincess of Hell -- she has the [[WideEyedIdealist idealism]] and the [[FriendToAllLivingThings personality]] down, complete with frequently bursting into song, but instead of an idyllic medieval kingdom, she rules over a hyper-violent, crime-infested [[WretchedHive urban]] [[AccidentalPun hell]][[WretchedHive scape]]. Consequently, her royal status doesn’t get her any love or respect from her subjects (especially since she's too nice to really utilize said authority most of the time), and the sheer horribleness of the environment means that most of the denizens see her determined altruism as hopelessly naïve at best and dangerous at worst.
* DemonLordsAndArchdevils: She holds the title of Princess of Hell. However, she's less of an infernal demonic mistress and more a garden-variety Franchise/DisneyPrincess, complete with bouncy and optimistic naïveté, saccharine song numbers, and the like.
* {{Determinator}}: It's hard to keep this girl down for long. Even though she's told by denizens of both Hell and Heaven that her dream of redeeming sinners is never going to happen, Charlite refuses to let it get her down for long, soldiering forward and intending to prove her way can work. Throughout the show, she's portrayed as [[WideEyedIdealist naïve but well-meaning and idealistic]], and [[FriendToAllLivingThings with the kind of personality that chooses to see the good in everyone]].
* DevilsPitchfork: In her demon form, she wields a fancy trident forged from angelic steel. There's a snake wrapped around the handle and an apple at the base of the blade, suggesting Lucifer gave it to her.
* DidntThinkThisThrough: Because Charlie herself is so pure, [[GoodCannotComprehendEvil she often dramatically underestimates what's actually needed in order to help people]]. She has a very surface level understanding of what leads people to sin, which results in an approach to mental health and therapy that can be very condescending and treating her guests childishly. [[CharacterDevelopment She makes progress in gradually growing out of this as the series goes on]], such as recognizing that haphazardly inserting herself between Angel Dust and Valentino inadvertently made the situation worse and specifically asking Husk to ''not'' force Angel back to the Hotel, but just ensure that he was safe until he was ready to return on his own.
** Though she has good intentions, no amount of singing or emotional appeals gets Charlie’s idea of redemption across to the sinner demons, who are all unrepentant bastards. Even her list is [[MissingStepsPlan shoddy and doesn't exactly explain just how to reach her goal]]. Her [[ZeroPercentApprovalRating lack of credibility]] isn't helping either. Not to mention that Charlie calling her potential clients' cretins, sluts and losers in her song probably didn't endear her to them, as it shows that despite her good intentions, she's clearly harboring some level of disdain for them.
** As Alastor points out, her hotel is very inadequate in terms of staff and amenities. If it wasn't for him calling in Niffty to clean up the place and Husk to work in the newly formed bar, no demon would come to such a shoddy place.
* {{Dogfaces}}: Charlie's nose is a dog-like snout highly reminiscent of classic Disney cartoons' and movies' dogfaces. Although we don't see her ears, Charlie's teeth are canine-like as well, making it more of a literal example.
* DoNotCallMePaul: Her full name is Charlotte, but if the fact that it's crossed out on [[https://twitter.com/HazbinHotel/status/992872171272732672 a character profile]] is any indication, she greatly prefers Charlie. While she doesn't seem to really get mad about it, she corrects Katie immediately when she refers to her by her full name.
* DragonRider: She can have one of her familiars serve as a draconic mount if she ever goes into full combat mode.
* DramaticWind: Charlie's demonic transformation is accompanied by her hair being whipped around wildly.
* TheDreaded: While other demons are willing to demean or insult her, it's notable that few are willing to go as far as actually ''picking a fight'' with her. Nice or not, she's still one of the most powerful beings in Hell and the daughter of Lucifer. Adam makes a mistake of underestimating her when they are fighting, which results in Charlie stabbing him and making him bleed.
* DudeMagnet: When she goes to a BDSM club with the Hotel residents at Angel Dust's suggestion, three demons at said club become very interested in her. Valentino creepily [[LecherousLicking licks her arm]] and offers her a porn job. And [[DirtyOldMan Adam]] refers to her as "Lilith's little hottie".
* DudeWheresMyRespect: You'd think as Hell's Princess, Charlie would get at least some respect from other demons. Instead, she's met with ridicule for her ideals. According to a [[https://twitter.com/VivziePop/status/1094341412659781632 tweet]], a [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=PKARLiCRocA&t=4078 livestream]], and a [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=K9B-SiHh6KA&t=2540 Q&A]], this is because the populace of Hell in general are complete jerkasses, who only respect the royals out of fear of their power. As Charlie's reputation and demeanor aren't perceived as threatening, she's ruthlessly mocked.
-->'''Vaggie:''' You're the princess of hell.\
'''Charlie:''' So?\
'''Vaggie:''' Maybe you can command a little more authority?\
'''Charlie:''' ''(whining)'' But that's so meeeaaan!
* EmotionalPowers: Moments of extreme anger or stress can cause her powers to flare up, accompanied by a transformation into a more demonic state.
* EtTuBrute: [[spoiler:The core issue behind Charlie's brief falling out with Vaggie is less the revelation that she's a former Exorcist and more the fact that, despite all that they've been through, Vaggie didn't seem to trust in their relationship enough to confide in her. As Charlie vents to Alastor and Rosie, she would have been more than willing to accept Vaggie's past because the whole point of her dream is that ''anyone'' deserves a chance at redemption and she feels hurt that Vaggie would doubt her, especially given how close their relationship is.]]
* EvenTheLovingHeroHasHatedOnes: She believes in seeing the good inside of people and in second chances. However, even she has her limits:
** In the pilot she takes a disliking to Katie Killjoy for being rude and dismissive of her idea, as well as her homophobia. When Katie mocks Charlie's Hotel, Charlie [[PokeThePoodle steals her pen]] and [[ThisIsForEmphasisBitch calls her a bitch]].
** She immediately gets a disliking towards Adam after spending a few minutes with him due to him being incredibly obnoxious and egotistical, which quickly becomes outright hatred when Adam gloats about how much he enjoys killing her people and mocks her dreams. She is incredibly disappointed when she sees him at the courtroom in Heaven, and the two have a stare down when Adam once again brags about the coming Extermination. [[spoiler:That said, she still convinces her father to spare him]].
** She's initially friendly to Valentino, even after he [[LecherousLicking lecherously slobbered over her arm]], but when she sees him abusing Angel, she immediately starts to go into her OneWingedAngel form to confront him, only stopping when Angel gets between them.
** Susan insulting her singing has her both swear at and [[FlippingTheBird flip off]] the woman.
** An implied example with Adam's second-in-command, Lute. Like with Adam, Charlie initially tries to be professional and polite but quickly, even slightly quicker than with Adam, comes to dislike Lute given the latter's HolierThanThou, bigoted attitude towards demons and Sinners. During the trial in Heaven, Charlie's absolutely ''fuming'' when Lute dismisses Angel Dust as "some crack whore who fucked up already". And their last interaction has a demonic Charlie giving a deadly DeathGlare at Lute while coldly stating that the extermination is over; this is stark contrast to her mercy and pity towards Adam; given how Charlie is protectively holding Vaggie at this moment, it's implied Charlie's hatred towards Lute in that moment is because of how she's hurt Vaggie.
* EveryoneHasStandards:
** She holds a trust fall exercise with the command that everybody has to catch the person that is up. When Niffty goes up and confesses to killing mother bugs in front of their kin to send a message with no sign of remorse, even Charlie doesn't bother catching her due to how morbid and disturbing her confession was.
** Upon seeing the extent of Valentino's abuse of Angel Dust, Charlie begins to transform into a much more demonic-looking appearance. Also, because she's the Princess of Hell and the daughter of Lucifer, it's implied that Charlie is [[WillfullyWeak far more powerful than she may outwardly appear]]. As such, Charlie's angry transformation is her resorting to physical force, which is very unusual for her. The only reason it doesn't go any further is because Angel talks down Charlie and tells her to leave the studio before she can do anything.
** While Charlie's main goal is to get sinners to redeem themselves and eventually get into Heaven, even she is disgusted when she learns that [[spoiler:[[BlackBox nobody in Heaven's leadership actually knows what it takes for a soul to get into Heaven]] and that the exterminations from the Exorsists were actually being kept a secret from the rest of Heaven by Sera and shares a massive TheReasonYouSuckSpeech with Emily towards the leadership of Heaven by telling them that if Hell is forever then the promise of Heaven is a lie and that if angels like Adam and Lute can do horrible actions and still remain there instead of becoming a FallenAngel, then Heaven is just as bad as Hell.]]
* {{Expy}}: She's based off Disney Princesses and mainly resembles [[{{WesternAnimation/Tangled}} Rapunzel.]] Both are blonde princesses with chipper and naive personality who offer their enemies redemption. Her hairstyle looks very similar to Rapunzel's braided up hair from ''WesternAnimation/TangledTheSeries''.
* ExtremelyProtectiveChild: A beaten-up and tired Charlie manages to tap into more of her demonic powers in order to protect her father from a surprise attack from Adam.
* EyeColourChange: She can change her eyes to a more demonic red if she wants to.
* FacialMarkings: When she shifts into a more demonic form, she gains black lines on her face, crossing vertically over her eyes.
* FailedASpotCheck: In "Hello Rosie", [[spoiler:Carmilla figures out that Vaggie is a former Exorcist almost immediately, due to the "X" over her eye and her angelic spear, but Charlie never even suspected the truth until Adam told her.]]
* FanOfTheUnderdog: She is the only member of the hotel to show compassion to Sir Pentious after he is revealed to be TheMole for the Vees. Even after the other residents have warmed to Sir Pentious, it is clear Charlie is the only one of them that actually buys into any of his bluster, being is genuine awe over his commander attire and being a visible ShipperOnDeck between him and Cherri Bomb.
* FatalFlaw: [[WideEyedIdealist Naivety and inexperience]], for all that Charlie's idealism is a source of strength, her eagerness to manifest her dreams can blind her to the difficulties involved. [[MissingStepsPlan She has very little idea of how to actually rehabilitate and redeem sinners, which often leads to her plans being poorly conceived]], and her own IncorruptiblePurePureness can leave her blindsided by how meanspirited or genuinely malicious others can be.
* TheFettered: Implied. She holds back in her fight with Katie Killjoy and lets a sketchy demon like Alastor help with the hotel because doing so otherwise would go against her belief that everyone deserves a chance to be redeemed. The season one finale really shows off her unwillingness to harm people, carrying a shield into battle and using sparkles and magic fireworks to attack; even fighting Adam, she's unable to fully tap into her powers.
* FlorenceNightingaleEffect: Charlie patching up a badly wounded Vaggie after an Extermination caused immediate sparks to fly between the two.
* GenderBlenderName: A downplayed version. Her full name is "Charlotte" but she [[DoNotCallMePaul doesn't like to be called that]] and prefers to go by the genderneutral “Charlie".
* GenkiGirl: She's a peppy and enthusiastic demon princess who's all fired up about the idea of rehabilitating demons and sending them to Heaven. Sometimes aggressively so.
-->'''Charlie:''' Omigosh, welcome to the Happy Hotel! You are going to ''[[WingdingEyes LOVE IT HERE!!]]''
* GenreRefugee: As stated above, Charlie's basically a Franchise/DisneyPrincess ruling over the CrapsackWorld of Hell. Not that her title means much when the denizens only give her a modicum of respect and attention.
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: Part of the reason why Razzle and Dazzle were given to Charlie as her personal protectors. According to [[https://twitter.com/VivziePop/status/1048698954030825472 a tweet]] and [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=VpfxbK6zbjg&t=8265 a livestream]], they were given to Charlie when she was a little girl and as such the cute little forms they normally assume are meant to invoke plush toys. It's unclear if this means that they're toys that have been brought to life or just demons that look like plushies.
* GirlyGirlWithATomboyStreak: She has [[LongHairIsFeminine long hair]] and the sweet personality of a typical PrincessClassic, but she generally wears suits and prefers to go by the gender-neutral (but typically more masculine) name "Charlie" over her full name of Charlotte.
* GlurgeAddict: To the Princess of Hell, sunshine and rainbows might as well be food and drink. She's is constantly gushing and squealing about cute or wholesome things and is overall a very sensitive and easily excited woman.
--> '''Charlie:''' Ok, I ''LOVE'' Heaven! Vaggie, did you see the ice cream shop? They had sprinkles made of ''RAINBOWS!''\
'''Vaggie:''' ...[[MundaneObjectAmazement Those are just rainbow sprinkles]].\
'''Charlie:''' Emily's going to take me to a zoo where all the animals are ''actually soft!'' You coming?\
'''Vaggie:''' Uhh, I need a break. But hug a koala for me.\
'''Charlie:''' OMG, can you imagine an ''actual koala!?'' '''[[{{Squee}} AAH!]]'''
* GoodIsNotDumb: Charlie is well aware that Alastor is, in her own words, "sketchy as fuck", and outright refuses to make any deals with him. She takes him on as a patron because of her principle that every demon deserves a chance to redeem themselves. She even admits that she knows how evil Alastor is and that he most likely doesn't want to change. It shows that even though she believes that redemption for demons is possible, she also knows that not all of them want to change for the better -- and all she can do is try. Additionally, as misplaced as her optimism can be, she's [[HandshakeRefusal not dumb enough to accept]] a HandshakeOfDoom for what was clearly a mystically binding [[DealWithTheDevil bargain]] from a CardCarryingVillain like Alastor. Justified, considering her dad is the ''actual'' devil and he explicitly taught her not to make those kinds of deals, i.e. "You don't take shit from other demons".
* GoodIsNotSoft: Charlie may be sweet, but she's no pushover. If she shares only one thing in common with her father, it's that she doesn't take shit from other demons. When Katie Killjoy takes things too far, Charlie insults her back and gets into a full on brawl with her.
* GuiltComplex: Charlie has a bad habit of blaming herself for circumstances far beyond her control, then working hard to make up for it. Her opening verse in the song "Finale" exemplifies this, as she blames herself for the Hotel's [[spoiler:destruction and Sir Pentious's death]] by failing to convince Heaven redemption is possible, despite the fact that Sera, Adam, and Lute had ''no intention'' of entertaining her idea, and [[spoiler:Sir Pentious chose to [[HeroicSacrifice give his life to protect his friends.]]]] It takes Lucifer leading the others in reminding Charlie [[YouAreBetterThanYouThinkYouAre of all she's accomplished]] and how they can [[spoiler:always rebuild the Hotel]] for her to be knocked out of her funk.
* HavingABlast: "The Show Must Go On" has Charlie creating fireworks by pointing into the air and conjuring the fireworks out of thin air. These fireworks are also pretty and sparkly, to reflect how much of a PluckyGirl she is, even in combat.
* HeroProtagonist: She is the show's main character and the plot revolves around her goal of redeeming sinners to protect them from the sadistic and genocidal Adam and his Exorcists.
* HairOfGoldHeartOfGold: Has blonde hair and genuinely cares about her people.
* HeavenSeeker: Charlie doesn't seem to want to go to Heaven herself, but her goal is to redeem sinners and get them a place there, as a solution to the overpopulation problem.
* HeroicBSOD:
** After her attempts to go straight to the top to plead her plan for the redemption of Sinners before Heavenly Court just results in Adam deciding to target the Hotel directly out of spite, and the revelation that [[spoiler:Vaggie has kept the fact she's an Exorcist from her]], Charlie retreats to her room and breaks down over everything she's fought for seeming to be AllForNothing, or even making things worse for people she promised to protect. She snaps out of it when Alastor reveals that Exorcists aren't invincible, though at the [[DealWithTheDevil cost of owing him a favor]].
** After the final battle of Season 1 she's devastated that [[spoiler:Sir Pentious sacrificed himself trying to take down Adam]], as well as the bloodshed in general, feeling that she personally failed to prevent things from spiraling to the point of violence. Her father and friends quickly pick her back up by pointing out the good she's done by changing their lives, and that she owes it to her dream to keep going.
* HiddenDepths: According to Husk's Instagram, she's good at playing poker.
* HopeBringer: One of Charlie's defining character traits is that, by believing in the best in even the damned inhabitants of Hell, she inspires them to believe in themselves and a brighter future. The entire point of the redemption Hotel she starts the series by coming up with was to give Sinners a brighter tomorrow to look towards than the eternal cycle of violence in Hell and eventual end at the point of an Exorcist spear.
** When Sir Pentious is exposed as TheMole and subsequently abandoned by the Vees, Charlie choosing to extend a hand and offer him a second chance pushes him to genuinely try and change for the better. [[spoiler:And ultimately become the first Redeemed Sinner when he selflessly lays down his life for his new friends.]]
** By opening her heart and explaining how the childhood stories her father would tell her taught her that dreams are worth fighting for, she manages to inspire Lucifer himself in turn and reignite his lost dreams of building a better future.
** By the end of the first Season Charlie has become this for all of Hell, by definitively proving that [[spoiler:the Exorcists can be fought back, and that Sinners can be redeemed]], completely overturning the status quo in Heaven and Hell.
--->'''Lucifer:''' ''In the last ten thousand years\
You're the first one to change this town.''
* HornedHumanoid: Her more demonic form has a pair of long horns on her head.
* HorrifyingTheHorror: While singing "Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow", Charlie's face suddenly shifts into a demonic-looking one with glowing eyes and horns bursting through her skin, which causes onlooking demons to back away with looks of shock. When the song is over, Katie is leaning as far away from her as she can (Charlie herself, in turn, [[OhCrap freaks out]] when [[TheDreaded Alastor]] comes knocking), though Charlie is far more disturbed about Alastor's demeanor and personality than his actual power level as Charlie is well aware that she's far more powerful than him.
* HotAsHell: While more on the beautiful side rather than seductive, Charlie's appearance is that of a slim, tall, and beautiful young woman with platinum blonde hair and round eyes. It is even creepily mentioned in universe by Adam as he calls her "Lilith's little hottie" showing that even he finds her attractive despite being a demon.
* HumanoidAbomination: She's the most human-looking demon in hell, but she's still a demon and the Princess of Hell. She lets her more demonic side slip through in a few brief moments of her "Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow" song. Plus she has a snout rather than a normal nose.
* HumansAreSpecial: [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=09-ribPwlAQ According to a stream]] (1:09:52) she sees something magical about humans (despite never actually meeting a living one) due to the fact that they have the capacity to go to Heaven or Hell.
* HumbleHero: Though naive, occasionally insensitive and starts off mistaking being humble for being something of a doormat to other people, Charlie is reluctant to use the powers of her station as Princess of Hell and very much willing to admit fault if she feels she's done something wrong. This is actually one of Charlie's primary obstacles; because Charlie is so modest and refuses to exercise her powers, none of the [[SocialDarwinist Sinners]] actually respect her and instead regard her as a laughing stock, which combined with the Sinners seeing themselves as BeyondRedemption, leaves the Hazbin Hotel struggling to even get off the ground. When Vaggie convinces her to start using her position more to help her clients, Charlie's inexperience due to this trope causes her to overcompensate in front of Valentino, [[NiceJobBreakingItHero leading to Angel Dust's day getting worse.]]
%%* InformedFlaw: While some characters such as Alastor and Husk make comments about Charlie having "daddy issues", none of Charlie's behavior around her father or other characters is indicative of this. In "Dad Beat Dad", Lucifer was shown to have been a loving father to Charlie growing up, and in the modern day, Lucifer is still loving, but somewhat distant.
* ImmortalityBeginsAtTwenty: She looks like a young woman, despite being hundreds or thousands of years old.
* InnocentlyInsensitive:
** When trying to convince Angel to become her first patron in the prequel comic, she puts her foot in her mouth when she tells Angel he looks like "someone who regrets his life choices".
** She also failed to consider that insulting potential clients in the same breath as advertising the Hotel probably wouldn't make them more interested in the idea.
** In episode 2, she praises Sir Pentious's progress in front of Angel despite the latter being at the Hotel for longer. Not helping is the fact that she had him, a struggling drug addict, play a drug dealer in a childish DrugsAreBad skit, completely oblivious to why that would bug Angel Dust.
* InterspeciesRomance: With Vaggie. While Charlie is half-Seraphim Angel and half demon, her girlfriend is a Sinner. [[spoiler:It is still in play even with the reveal that Vaggie is actually a FallenAngel]].
* {{Irony}}:
** Unlike sinner demons who’re damned souls who went to Hell after they died, Charlie was born and raised there. However, she is the purest, sweetest ray of sunshine around.
** Charlie's goal is to redeem Sinners in order to put an end to the annual exterminations. [[spoiler:Her biggest supporter, partner, and love is Vaggie, a FallenAngel who was once an Exorcist; and, according to Adam, one of the most ruthless ones]].
* IWantSong:
** Her rendition of "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows", which also opens the series. After losing more of her people to the yearly extermination, Charlie sings about her pursuit of happiness and salvation for the damned citizens of Hell, even if it seems like a distant pipe dream.
** "Happy Day In Hell" in the first episode where she sings about how she will convince the angels to accept her plan and to stop their purges.
* KarmicJackpot: She is nothing but kind and forgiving to Sir Pentious, even after the discovery he was a mole for the Vees. Moved by having someone genuinely supportive of him, Sir Pentious is motivated to genuinely change for the better. Ultimately, not only was Pentious' presence in the hotel pivotal to discovering how to fight off the Exorcists, but [[spoiler:in the Season One finale, he effectively commands and weaponises the Hotel in their war against the Exorcists, and his HeroicSacrifice gets him redeemed and sent to heaven as undesputed proof at last that Charlie's idea works.]]
* LadyAndKnight: A same-sex variant, Charlie is the Bright Lady to Vaggie's White Knight. Best illustrated in the song "Whatever it Takes", where Vaggie [[DeclarationOfProtection declares]] she'll be Charlie's "armor".
* LadyInAPowerSuit: The Princess of Hell wears some tasteful and snazzy tuxedos.
* LetsGetDangerous: She spends much of the fight in the season 1 finale being an ApologeticAttacker or otherwise not harming the angels. [[spoiler:Once Sir Pentious is vaporized by Adam, she goes into her full Demon Mode and charges at him, putting up a decent fight.]]
* LightEmUp: During the fight to defend the Hotel she attacks using [[FatalFireworks firework-like]] blasts of light.
* LightIsGood: She has chalk-white skin and also happens to be half-angel (a fallen angel of course but an angel no less) and is a kind princess who is desperate to save her subjects from extermination.
* LikeParentLikeChild:
** It’s subtle, but Charlie’s situation is the mirror inverse of her father’s. If we’re going by most versions, Lucifer was born an angel in Heaven, tired of the endless goodness and purity, and convinced other angels to rebel and eventually got kicked out of Heaven for Hell. Charlie was born a demon in Hell, is dismayed by the endless violence and destruction, and is encouraging other demons to rebel against the BadIsGoodAndGoodIsBad status quo and reform enough to leave Hell for Heaven. [[invoked]][[WordofGod Vivziepop]] even revealed that Charlie actually takes very much after her father.
** The prologue states that originally, Lucifer was an optimist and a dreamer who refused to accept the oppressed status quo for humans. That's pretty much Charlie to a T as well (with sinners instead of humans, although the former are a subset of the latter anyways).
** This gets lampshaded in "Dad Beat Dad" with Lucifer and Charlie's duet noting that the apple didn't fall far.
** "Welcome to Heaven" reveals that, just like her mother, [[spoiler:she fell in love with a FallenAngel, albeit unwittingly.]]
* LipstickLesbian: She's bisexual and has a girlfriend, but aside from her penchant for suits over dresses, she's more femme than masculine in her presentation.
* LittleBitBeastly: While for the most part she's humanoid, she does have a couple inhuman traits, even outside of the horns she normally keeps concealed. She has fangs, her nose more resembles a dog's, making it look like she has a muzzle of sorts when viewed in profile, and, while normally hidden by her shoes, she has hooves in lieu of human feet. While her legs bend like humans', [[https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/hazbinhotel/images/8/87/Charlie_Morningstar_render.png their shape]] (especially when wearing her suit trousers) is sometimes subtly suggestive of [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digitigrade#/media/File:Les_différents_types_de_locomotions_chez_les_amniotes.png those of unguligrade animals,]] particularly around the upper calves.
* LoveAtFirstSight: Downplayed. It's more of "Developed Romantic Feelings at First Sight". When Charlie rescued and tended to an injured Vaggie, the former became shy and even romantically flustered, implying her feelings for Vaggie started at that point.
* LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: In "The Show Must Go On", Charlie is initially seen fighting with a shield that Seraphim and apple motifs, which she uses both for offense and defense.
* MagicKnight: Her preferred fighting style is wielding a weapon in one hand and casting magic with the other. Her choice of weapon varies between a shield and trident depending on how serious she is about causing harm.
* MagicalGirlWarrior: She enters her full demon form by spinning in a column of fire and summoning her trident seemingly from thin air, evoking this trope.
* {{Manchild}}: Charlie is hundreds or thousands of years old (and even considering her immortality has the physical age of a young adult); she is the only person in Hell who acknowledges that a yearly purge of its citizens is a problem and wants to fix it. She also has a hyperactive, bubbly, and even childish personality, with a lot more enthusiasm than preplanned steps. She presents her plans to Heaven and Hell with pictures drawn in ''crayon'' and communicates her ideas via reality-warping musical numbers. When she's in Heaven to pitch her plans before the Heavenly Court, she acts like a tourist, eager to visit Heaven's petting zoo and try Rainbow Sprinkles on ice cream. When attempting to get the Habin Hotel guests and employees to bond through trust exercises, she eagerly wants to go first, like a kindergartener in show-and-tell. %%gendered redirects are only allowed on character-specific pages ''if'' it doesn't interfere with the alphabetical order. Changing this entry to "Womanchild" messes with the alphabetical order. Please stop changing this to "Womanchild."
-->'''Vaggie:''' Who wants to go first?\
'''Charlie:''' Ooh! Ooh! [=MeMeMe=]! Me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me, me!
* MarkedChange: When she shifts into a more demonic form, she gains black lines on her face, crossing vertically over her eyes.
* MasculineFeminineGayCouple: PlayedWith in regards to her relationship with Vaggie. Charlie dresses androgynously, but her personality is more stereotypically feminine. Vaggie on the other hand, presents more feminine, but has more of stereotypically masculine personality.
* MeaningfulName:
** Beyond being a obvious reference to her father, "Morningstar" can also refer to a light visible on dark nights, that was once used as a guide, reflecting Charlie's desire to show Sinners a better path then just reveling in their vices.
** Her first name is Charlie and she lives down in Hell, which is pretty heavily associated with fire and burning, or in other words, charring.
** Her full first name is Charlotte, which is derived from an Old English Word meaning "Free Man", pretty fitting for the daughter of the Angel and Woman who defied their original roles in the cosmic order. It is also a name associated with royalty, as many queens and princesses throughout history have been named Charlotte.
* MessianicArchetype: And not just in the [[AntiAntiChrist obvious]] [[RedemptionEarnsLife ways]] either. Much like [[UsefulNotes/{{Jesus}} a certain other Messiah]], she’s the child of a major Abrahamic figure who wants to make life better for people but faces ridicule and scorn from society (particularly from people like Katie) for her radical idealism. Her song "It Starts With Sorry" has a part where she defends Sir Pentious from execution on grounds that he wasn't the only one who's sinned, similar to when Jesus did so for an adulteress. The song ends with Charlie showing how Sir Pentious' sins could be wiped away with repentance, which was one of Jesus' primary teachings. Jesus' goal was to make it so the sinners of Earth could get into heaven just as Charlie's was to get the sinners of Hell into it, [[spoiler:and she succeeded.]]
* MisplacedKindergartenTeacher: [[invoked]] WordOfGod states that Charlie, though well-intentioned, views her charges at the hotel as wayward children and has little idea of what effective criminal rehabilitation actually involves. Her idea of teaching sinners to be good involves doing simple trust building exercises like trust falls and having them act out skits where they refuse to buy drugs from a dealer, and instead go home to study. [[SurprisinglyRealisticOutcome Doing this for five months does nothing to actually redeem the sinners]], making Charlie realize that her way of doing things wouldn't actually work like she hoped. However, both Angel Dust and Sir Pentious actually do change for the better during their time at the hotel, with [[spoiler:Pentious even going to Heaven in the season one finale as a result.]] Despite Charlie's actual teaching methods being flimsy, she is still effective as a MoralityPet and [[PositiveFriendInfluence building a supportive environment within the Hotel]].
* MissingStepsPlan:
** She clearly has no idea how she's going to get her plan to work, even though she's pouring her heart into it. A FreezeFrameBonus of her notes during the pilot episode shows that what plan she has is [[CloudCuckooLander weird, to say the least]].
--->4. Unicorn Kisses\
1945. Dolphin High Fives?\
1956. Sing Showtunes!!! = HappyEnding!!
** Shown again during her song "Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow", where she seems to just think getting rid of bad temptations is all you have to do; for example, throwing an addict's drugs into a fire in front of him.
* ModestRoyalty: Despite being the princess of Hell, she seemingly favors [[{{Bifauxnen}} tasteful suits]] over luxury gowns and formal wear.
* MoreInsultingThanIntended: During Pentious's first day in the the hotel she had him and Angel play out a skit where Angel was a drug dealer offering him crack, even having Angel refer to himself as a "crackhead." This clearly makes Angel uncomfortable, especially when you consider he died from a drug overdose.
* {{Motifs}}: According to [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjojinb_md0&t=8478s Vivienne Medrano]] in 2019, one of the main themes for Charlie's design is {{vaudeville}}[==]-era porcelain dolls and puppets. This can be seen in her more humanoid appearance compared to other demons, white skin, red cheek markings, thick lashes, and other makeup-like coloration such as black lips and fingernails and gray eyelids that give the appearance of wearing eyeshadow. She shares this motif with her father, as it is based on Lucifer's AngelicBeauty.
-->'''[[https://www.youtube.com/live/sjojinb_md0?si=Afz4kSvpcN6x4gAl&t=8535 Vivienne Medrano:]]''' [Charlie's] biggest theme is like, she's supposed to be like a porcelain doll, 'cause like, her and Lucifer … the way I based Lucifer was basically like on the… theology that Lucifer was like, one of the most gorgeous angels in Heaven,[…] that's why I made him really doll-like, that's why they've got, like, their cheeks the way they are.
* MotorMouth: She really gets going during "Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow".
* MyGodWhatHaveIDone:
** For the early points of Angel Dust's stay at the Hotel, Charlie is fairly oblivious to the real severity of his state of life, and uses very patronising and unintentionally insulting exercises to try and enlighten him. In "Masquerade" she goes to a film shoot to support Angel and gets a ''very'' unpleasant glimpse of his situation, culminating in him throwing Charlie out after landing him in more hot water with Valentino. Though this was a ShooTheDog tactic on his part, he is later met with a bawling and sobbing Charlie begging him to forgive her.
** In "Welcome to Heaven" Charlie makes an argument in Heaven's court, which turns into an angry uproar against Adam and Sera over their handling of the Exorcisms. When her case is overruled, a celebrating Adam vows to make Hazbin Hotel their next target to spite Charlie. "Hello Rosie" begins with her sobbing in her room, mortified that her attempt to redeem her clients has put them next on the kill list.
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: She’s a demon (and was born that way unlike [[DemonOfHumanOrigin the sinner demons]]) but is a kindhearted and joyful person who wants to help others.
* NiceGirl: An oddity for a denizen of Hell, she’s very compassionate and optimistic. She cares for the denizens of Hell and would do anything to reform everyone who’s willing to seek redemption. Even with someone trying to sabotage her business like [[TheMole Sir Pentious]], she is willing to forgive them and give them a chance. The only time she really stops being nice is when she gets pushed too far (like clapping back at Katie Killjoy for mocking her goals of rehabilitating demons) and when she sees people are being treated horribly (with her coming pretty close to assaulting Valentino after seeing how horribly Angel Dust is exploited by him).
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Her attempts to make an argument for redeeming sinners in court, including revealing the Exterminations to the rest of Heaven, fail to do much more than put Hazbin Hotel first on Adam's hit list:
-->'''Husk:''' How come every time Charlie talks to Heaven, ''we'' get in [[GuiltByAssociationGag deeper and deeper shit]]?
* NightmareFace: Her face sometimes shifts into a much more demonic-looking one, with glowing red eyes, large horns sprouting from her head and razor sharp teeth.
* NonHumanHumanoidHybrid: Ambiguous. Her dad is Lucifer, so she is half (Fallen) Angel. The ambiguous part comes with her mother, who, if we're going off the biblical lore and the story book Charlie is narrating in the prologue, would be a DemonOfHumanOrigin.
* NotSoAboveItAll:
** While she is undoubtedly one of, if not the, nicest person in Hell, she’s not above using curse words, although she mostly [[PrecisionFStrike uses them for emphasis]] or when caught off guard rather than [[ClusterFBomb throwing them around in every other sentence]] like a lot of the other characters.
** Also, despite being nice most of the time, she still gets annoyed enough to cuss out and fight Katie Killjoy. She’s also petty enough to add her rival into her song, including her on the phrase "All of you cretins, sluts, and losers".
** Implied by Husk's comments in Episode 4, she tends to drink to the point of drunkenly spouting out her insecurities. In Episode 6, she's baffled at Heaven's strictness in regards to staying sober.
--->'''Charlie:''' Are you really telling me you’ve never had a drink with friends after a hard day?
** A FreezeFrameBonus within Lucifer's room in "Dad Beat Dad" suggests that ''she'', [[TheCutie of all people]], had a goth/emo phase before the events of the series.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Having been born in Hell, she’s well over two hundred, but she has the appearance of a young twenty-something. Her bubbly personality also her makes her seem even younger.
* OneHeadTaller: Charlie is about a head taller than her girlfriend, which results in Vaggie regularly looking up to her.
* OneWingedAngel: Once finally provoked into transforming into her demon form, Charlie erupts into a pillar of fire from which she emerges with HellishPupils, SupernaturalGoldEyes with red sclera, horns, a prehensile tail with spines and long claws. This is also implied to still not be her full potential, as she briefly transforms her arm even further when performing a PunchCatch against Adam.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** Charlie is normally a PluckyGirl and close to an ExtremeDoormat with how much she puts up with. So, when she starts transforming into her more demonic form, it's highly unusual. When she starts to transform after seeing Valentino's abuse of Angel Dust, Angel immediately talks Charlie down before she can do anything, but Angel knew that things were about to go south if Charlie was willing to go that far.
** Charlie is usually tolerant of Alastor and the latter's {{Troll}}ish nature, being considerably more patient than Vaggie's more open dislike of the Overlord's antics. [[spoiler:Upon her disastrous meeting with Heaven which included Sera refusing to listen to Charlie's pleas, Adam targeting the Hotel first in the Extermination, and learning Vaggie's secret of being a FallenAngel Exorcist, leaves the Princess in [[DespairEventHorizon despair]]. It's to the point that when Alastor begins his usual taunting, Charlie is visibly angered, refers to him as an "asshole", and openly condemns his sick enjoyment at other's suffering]].
** Even with their disagreements, Charlie is still warm and affectionate with her girlfriend, Vaggie. [[spoiler:When she learns that Vaggie lied about being a FallenAngel Exorcist, Charlie not only grows distant from the latter but also cold. It takes a heart-to-heart talk with Rosie to help Charlie work through the pain that Vaggie has lied to her for so long.]]
** Charlie is normally an extremely expressive and open person, whether that takes the form of expressing hope and joy or anger and frustration, but after discovering that [[spoiler:Vaggie lied about her past [[FallenAngel Exorcist]] Charlie's demeanor toward her girlfriend briefly becomes cold and distant]].
** Charlie agreed that making any kind of magically-binding deal with [[TheDreaded Alastor]] would be bad and refuses to do when they first meet. [[spoiler:A combination of Heaven not listening to her pleas, [[AxCrazy Adam]] promising to target the Hotel when the next Extermination happens and learning that Vaggie has been keeping her FallenAngel heritage a secret leaves Charlie [[MomentOfWeakness desperate]]. So desperate that she finally strikes a deal with Alastor; it may not have been for her soul or to hurt anyone, but this action shows just how much despair the Princess was in]].
** When discussing the Hotel, Charlie will often mention Vaggie as her "[[NumberTwo partner]]". [[spoiler:The sting of learning that Vaggie kept her origins as an Exorcist Angel, ''greatly'' shakes and angers Charlie; in her initial attempt to ask the Cannibal Town residents for assistance in the fight against Heaven, Charlie first starts to say she runs the Hotel with her partner before [[VerbalBackspace switching]] to "someone"]].
** Charlie is so pacifistic and nice, she considers using her authority as the Princess of Hell 'so mean', and even during war, her fighting style is largely nonlethal and [[LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe defensive,]] and [[ApologeticAttacker full of apologies]]. [[spoiler:Then Adam vaporizes Sir Pentious, and driven by rage, she goes full demon form and goes on the offensive, actually stabbing Adam and drawing blood.]]
* OppositesAttract: She and Vaggie have opposing personalities: Charlie is upbeat, perky, constantly cheerful, and prone to breaking out in song. Vaggie is practical, perpetually frowns, has a temper, and is prone to resorting to violence. However, this is only on the surface level, and their relationship is deeper and more complex. Both are the most morally upright characters (granted, not a high bar), Charlie isn't as naive as her personality would imply and her motivation is her sorrow at seeing her people massacred each year. Vaggie does believe in Charlie's dream, even if she's skeptical if it can be achieved. This is also reflected by their backgrounds: Charlie is a hellborn demon, while [[spoiler:Vaggie is a FallenAngel and a former Exorcist.]]
* TheParagon: {{Zig Zagged|Trope}}. She certainly tries to be this, and she has the heroic persona, but the stakes of the show exist because she has failed to inspire the sinners to follow her example. That said, her idealism has at least reformed Vaggie and managed to crack Angel's heartless facade a little. She’s even made an unambiguously evil overlord work for something good instead of spreading bloody chaos, even if only because said evil overlord is just bored with spreading bloody chaos. [[spoiler:Compared to the Exorcists Adam and Lute and even the top Seraphim of Heaven, Sera, who are behind the exterminations to begin with out of a desire for entertainment and fear that Hell will rise up against Heaven, Charlie is shown to be much more heroic than them.]]
* PartialTransformation: When she's especially angry she starts transforming into her full demon form--sprouting horns and having her irises turn yellow and sclerae turn red. A RunningGag across the series is her ''starting'' to transform out of rage, only to be interrupted and snap back to her senses. [[spoiler:She transforms fully after Adam kills Sir Pentious in the finale, showing how she's finally reached her RageBreakingPoint.]]
* PlayingWithFire: During her "Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow" song, she seems to conjure fire a couple of times. During "Hell Is Forever", her PartialTransformation causes a piece of paper in her hand to ignite. She’s also capable of creating fireworks, which she also makes use of as unconventional explosive projectiles in battle.
* ThePollyanna: She's the ''only'' good-natured optimistic demon in all of Hell and tries to act and speak as cordially as possible, but she's constantly repulsed by how other (read: all the rest) demons behave around her, which doesn't put a lot of faith in her plan to give them a second chance to ascend to Heaven.
* PokeThePoodle:
** After being humiliated by Katie on TV, Charlie tries to one-up her by stealing her pen. Unfortunately, her [[ThisIsForEmphasisBitch poor word choice]] [[BerserkButton only escalates things]].
** In the season 1 finale, after apologizing to the exorcists attacking her, Vaggie tells Charlie to cut it out and get serious. Charlie screams "Die, Motherfuckers!" at them but just throws harmless fireworks.
* PrecisionFStrike: Unlike many other characters in Hell, who [[ClusterFBomb shout profanities like there's no tomorrow]], Charlie mostly only uses curse words for emphasis or when caught off guard.
-->'''Charlie:''' That's what the ''fuck'' I've been saying!
* PrettyPrincessPowerhouse: The beautiful Princess Of Hell who also happens to be the daughter of a higher fallen seraphim and the original sinner which makes her the second most powerful entity in Hell and stronger than a lot of beings in Heaven. While she hasn't shown the full extent of her power due to her own morals and being WillfullyWeak, from the small glimpses we have seen it's made pretty clear that she is far, FAR more dangerous than her cute design and NiceGirl personality suggests.
* PrincessClassic: With her sweet and altruistic personality, WideEyedIdealist approach to redeeming sinners, and the royal authority as Lucifer's daughter, she's pretty much an archetypical princess. And while she prefers suits over dresses, she still fits the mold. It's just that her domain happens to be Hell.
* PrincessProtagonist: She is the princess of Hell and the main character of the story.
* PunchCatch: She manages to extend a hand and stop [[spoiler:Adam's]] charge completely dead in its tracks when the latter tries to score a cheap shot against her father. What makes this especially notable is that [[spoiler:Adam]] had just overpowered her in the same fight, the disparity between the two outcomes and her arm swelling and glowing red implies that she tapped into a power she hasn't fully realized yet.
* QuirkyGirlQuirkyTux: Her regular outfit is a red and black tuxedo.
* RageBreakingPoint: Charlie remains rather calm and meek in most circumstances, but when faced with cruelty and injustice, she gives into anger and her demonic heritage (red eyes and horns) manifests:
** When Adam continuously talks over her, insulting and mocking her plan to her face while sneering that he and the other Exorcists use the Exterminations as entertainment, Charlie becomes enraged and starts transforming only to back down.
** Upon seeing the abuse Valentino subjects Angel Dust to firsthand, she becomes furious and starts transforming, but is stopped by Angel.
** [[spoiler:During "You Didn't Know", you can see and hear her anger building up during her ''"It's not fair Sera"'' line, with Vaggie trying to rein her in as she is partially transformed and Adam is gloating to her face about the next Extermination, before joining in with Emily in berating the elite of Heaven for propping up such an unfair system while claiming to be good.]]
** Played for laughs in "Hello Rosie". [[spoiler:After spending most of the episode struggling with sorting out her conflicted feelings regarding Vaggie in light of finding out she's a FallenAngel and the stress and desperation to save the Hotel from Adam, [[ScrewPolitenessImASenior Susan's]] heckling while she's trying to rally Cannibal Town to help her finally pushes her over the edge and she furiously cusses Susan out.]]
** In "The Show Must Go On", Charlie is initially defensive and apologetic during the battle, staying in her humanoid form. However, after Adam [[spoiler:[[KamehameHadoken casually obliterates]] Sir Pentious, she becomes enraged, fully turns into her demonic form for the first time and rushes to fight Adam.]]
* Really700YearsOld: In the "Let's Misbehave" clip, there's a family portrait of hers with a caption that reads, "Magne Family 1871" which implies that she's well over a hundred years old. In the actual pilot though, the portrait is no longer accompanied with this particular caption. In a later stream by Faustisse, the portrait of her and her ex-boyfriend, Seviathan, at prom was stated to have been taken over 200 years ago, which lifts her age even higher.
* TheRedeemer: Charlie's goal is to become one of these. She believes that every demon in hell can be redeemed if they try — and she even opens up a hotel to help sinners work toward redemption so they can go to heaven. She also successfully gets Sir Pentious to be a better person after showing him mercy. [[spoiler:And she ends up being proven right when Sir Pentious goes to Heaven after his HeroicSacrifice.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: She's very nice, but her red eyes become very apparent when she embraces the devil side of herself. They are most noticeable when she’s singing "Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow" but are also visible in the introduction when she’s lamenting all of the death caused by the latest extermination. Her design in the series has permanently red pupils, and when she's angered her eyes change to have red sclerae and SupernaturalGoldEyes.
* RedIsHeroic: Her design in the series proper is predominantly red, and she's the most noble character in the series. This separates her quite a bit from a lot of other demons, who are RedAndBlackAndEvilAllOver.
* RousseauWasRight: Charlie is shown to be the kindest, nicest, most joyful person in Hell. Growing up, she always tried to see the good in everything around her. As such, Charlie sincerely believes that every single demon has something good deep down inside. This is best demonstrated by her song "Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow", which is basically ''RousseauWasRight: The Song''.
-->'''Charlie:''' ♪ Inside of every demon is a rainbow,\
Inside every sinner is a shiny smile!\
Inside of every creepy hatchet-wielding maniac,\
Is a jolly, happy, cupcake-loving child! ♪
* RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething: Seeing her people being slaughtered every year in response to Hell’s OverpopulationCrisis, she decides she can’t stand idly by while the place she lives in is subjected to such violence. She embarks on a passion project to solve the problem in a humane way by rehabilitating sinners.
* SamaritanRelationshipStarter: Charlie's first encounter with Vaggie was during an Extermination three years prior to the start of the series: she found her laying injured in an alley, as the latter was mutilated and banished from Heaven by her superiors for showing mercy to a Sinner child, leaving her on the verge of death. At that point, everyone involved in the massacre, be it Exorcists or Hell denizens, have either fought and slaughtered indiscriminately or just merely duck for cover, with Vaggie not expecting anyone to raise a hand to help her. Unlike most, Charlie actually stops and bandages her just for the sake of helping someone in need. Seeing someone who not only offers help but does it in such a doting, caring way makes Vaggie feel an instant connection with her. One HeldGaze later and the two have been a couple ever since.
* SevenHeavenlyVirtues: Ironically, Charlie (a hellborn demon and also the literal [[TheAntiChrist Anti-Christ]]) embodies this trope.
** Chastity: Charlie is easily one of the most morally wholesome characters in the show and lives a very "clean" life free from the many hedonistic pleasures found in Hell. While [[TheBartender Husk]] noting that [[InVinoVeritas Charlie confides in him suggests that she might occasionally drink]], it’s never to the point of addiction and she never uses drugs or indulges herself in unhealthy behavior. It's also implied she and Vaggie have a very active, happy sex life but the two are in a monogamous and committed relationship as opposed to most Sinners.
** Temperance: Despite starting from a position with very little knowledge of ''how'' exactly to redeem Sinners, Charlie is mindful of personal limits and boundaries. She often reins in the more extreme impulses of the other residents of the Hotel, such as when Vaggie took a trust exercise to a warzone, while also being open minded about their thoughts and histories.
** Charity: Everything Charlie works toward is for the betterment of others at no gain to herself. She’s very content with the idea of Sinner living in the hotel for free as long as they want to redeem themselves and in the prequel comic she gave to Angel Dust a hefty sum of money as an “investment in him”.
** Diligence: She takes her job at the Hazbin Hotel very seriously, and she is willing to confront Heaven itself to make sure her goal of redeeming damned souls would come into fruition, despite starting with little to no support, and despite the many challenges and setbacks she faces, Charlie always picks herself back up and keeps pushing onward to make her dream of redemption a reality.
** Patience: Even when she has to deal with shady jerks, she tries to be professional and civil to them, and when she does lose her cool, it’s either in self-defense, or because those people earned her hatred for good reasons (such as Adam and Valentino).
** Kindness: She really wants to redeem Sinners with having nothing in return, and she willingly forgives those who wronged her as long as they genuinely repent. [[spoiler:In the past she even saved Vaggie, who at the time was recently injured and banished from Heaven by Lute and Adam with no questions asked, although she mistook her for a Sinner who had a close call with an Exorcist]].
** Humility: Despite her being The Princess of Hell, she never uses her status or her powers to boss people around nor looks them down upon, and instead goes to great lengths to protect them. When Adam asks her why she would give up her immortal life for Sinners during their battle, she immediately responds that everyone in her hotel is her family.
* ShieldBash: She initially wields a large shield in "The Show Must Go On", using it to bat away the attacking Exorcists.
* ShipperOnDeck: In "The Show Must Go On", she watches with wide-eyed excitement when Sir Pentious [[CannotSpitItOut tries]] to admit his feelings to Cherri Bomb.
* ShoutOut: In [[https://twitter.com/VivziePop/status/942571980393349120 a tweet]], Viv drew Charlie and Vaggie as Jack Skellington and Sally from ''WesternAnimation/TheNightmareBeforeChristmas'' respectively, noting the parallels the former couple had with the latter.
* ShownTheirWork: As pointed out in a [[https://reddit.com/r/HazbinHotel/comments/e82isk/its_hard_to_see_but_when_vaggies_adjusting/ reddit post]], there's actually a symbol on Charlie's bowtie which can be seen [[FreezeFrameBonus when Vaggie adjusts it]]. It's hard to see, but it’s an [[https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sulfur#Antiquity alchemical symbol for sulfur]] that's associated with the fire and brimstone of Hell and been adopted as a symbol used in [=LaVeyan=] Satanism. Known as the Leviathan Cross or Satan's Cross, it's a fitting symbol for the daughter of the Devil.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: A same-sex example. Charlie is in a happily committed, stable, and loving relationship with [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold Vaggie]] for a number of the latter's positive qualities -- [[HonestAdvisor honesty]], [[UndyingLoyalty loyalty]], [[ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend protectiveness]], being [[CloudcuckoolandersMinder supportive but down-to-earth]], and [[GoodIsNotNice high moral nature]]. At one point, Charlie states that Vaggie is the person she trusts most in the world. [[spoiler:When she discovers Vaggie has been [[LiarRevealed keeping her origin]] as a FallenAngel Exorcist a secret, Charlie is only hurt and angry at the lie itself because they share everything with each other. It's also implied that Charlie fell in love with Vaggie because the latter was the [[BecauseYouWereNiceToMe first person in all of Hell to actively, steadfastly, and genuinely support her ideas and goals]], specifically the desire to redeem Sinners.
* SinsOfTheFather: {{Zigzagg|ingTrope}}ed. She is allowed to visit Heaven to make the case for her plan to redeem sinners, showing that she is exempt from her parents' banishment, and Sera and Emily are polite to her since she is functionally a foreign dignitary. That said, Sera emphasizes that her visit to Heaven is ''temporary'' when Emily gushes about how much she'll enjoy her stay, so it's more that Lucifer holds enough authority to force her visit than it is Charlie being considered separate from him.
* SitcomArchNemesis: [[https://twitter.com/VivziePop/status/1014241101941575681 According to Viv]], Charlie has one with the character of Helsa, a rich girl demon that [[https://twitter.com/VivziePop/status/1046164032842067969 Viv]] [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=L0T91K9l5Sk&t=2117 describes]] to be like Regina George from ''Film/MeanGirls''. While Helsa has yet to make a full proper appearance, she has a cameo during "Inside of Every Demon is a Rainbow" and appears in a painting in the hotel with her and Charlie’s families. Helsa’s cameo in Charlie’s song shows off the two’s dynamic, with Charlie calling her a loser.
* SlasherSmile: Despite being an AllLovingHero she adopts a vicious grin when her face shifts into its more demonic form.
* SpecialPersonNormalName: She's Lucifer's daughter and the Princess of Hell, and her name is... Charlotte.
* SpoiledSweet: As the Princess of Hell, she's arguably the most priviledged person there. She had a loving childhood in Hell from parents whose crimes were granting humanity free will while she herself avoids any guilt for past crimes because she's a hellborn. Her inherited power means she's untouchable to other demons and her father's deal with Heaven keeps her safe from Extermination. All of these advantages give her the room to be idealistic and generous to her demonic subjects.
* SpontaneousWeaponCreation: Charlie is able to manifest her pitchfork as part of her full demon transformation.
* StatuesqueStunner: While the art tends to [[YourSizeMayVary fluctuate a bit due to the realities of animators not keeping perfect scale at all times]], Vivzie has stated that Charlie stands at roughly 6'6" (198cm) tall. ''Very'' tall by human standards and towering a full head taller than her girlfriend Vaggie, and her father Lucifer, and she's [[DudeMagnet consistently seen as attractive]]. It's mitigated only by Hell's other creatures usually towering even further above normal humans, with Charlie standing roughly medium height among the main cast.
* StealthInsult: When Katie Killjoy says she doesn't "touch the gays" because she has "standards", Charlie asks how that's working out for her, with a large advertisement in the background reminding everyone that they're in {{Hell}}.
* StealthPun: "Charlie Magne", her full name in the pilot, is a play on "Charlemagne".
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Charlie has a lot of her father's features (yellow eyes, skin complexion, cheeks) and looks even more like him when she enters into a demon form. She only inherited her mother's softer eye appearance and lacks her father's jagged teeth.
* SuperCuteSuperpowers: When she's holding back, she presents magical blasts in the form of glittery firework-like explosions.
* SupernaturalFloatingHair: When she transforms into a more demonic form, her hair tends to start blowing around as if in a wind.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: When she transforms fully or partially into her monstrous form, her irises and sclerae swap colors--the former turning red and the latter turning yellow with HellishPupils.
* TeamMom: Charlie is an ultimately sweet and altruistic caretaker who genuinely loves the people she takes under her care and wants to see them improve, even if they sometimes need wrangling to stop their worst impulses from guiding them. At first all the residents see this as obnoxious CondescendingCompassion stemming from Charlie being a clueless noblewoman who is completely disconnected from the suffering of the average Sinner, but as the series progresses, they gradually begin to accept it as the sincere, nurturing compassion it really is. It also clearly means a lot to Charlie, as she's driven to InelegantBlubbering when Angel forgives her for getting him in trouble with Valentino.
-->'''Angel:''' Charlie, I get it. Thanks...for caring about me.
* TenderTears: She's just as tearful as she is optimistic. Her first scene is her weeping over the demons killed in the Cleanse.
* ThinkingUpPortals: Charlie has the power to teleport objects from another location to where she currently is via a portal she created, as seen in "Overture" when she summons her stack of drawings to the meeting. It turns out that she inherited this power from Lucifer, her father.
* ThouShaltNotKill: Charlie is averse to violence and killing, especially the routine Exorcist purges, but even if it's in self-defense or in a warzone. While she accepts her allies killing the Exorcists, Charlie doesn't personally kill anyone, fighting with a shield rather than a lethal weapon and shoots harmless fireworks at the angels. She even [[spoiler:doesn't want Adam dead and asked her dad to spare him once he's been pummeled to the ground]].
* TokenGoodTeammate: Downplayed. She is the most gung-ho Hazbin Hotel staff to redeem Sinners, but she also has the steadfast support of her girlfriend/manager, Vaggie. Also, Charlie is also the only staff member to not have a DarkAndTroubledPast that involves some kind of violent act. Plus, she is the straightest example of an AllLovingHero NiceGirl but the other cast members are all varying degrees of [[JerkWithAHeartOfGold jerks with hearts of gold]] but grow [[TookALevelInKindness kinder]] as the story progresses. [[spoiler: By the season one finale, the rest of the staff and residents are all committed to Charlie's goal for her and each other, with the exception being Alastor, though even ''he'' shows signs of growing attachment to them.]]
* TokenHeroicOrc: She's the only known Hellborn demon that can be called genuinely virtuous. She's a PluckyGirl, genuinely wants to help people become better, genuinely wants to reform sinners with her hotel efforts, and always tries to be polite to people.
* TomboyishName: While the name "Charlie" is gender neutral, traditionally it is a masculine name, befitting her penchant for suits. Valentino offhandedly refers to her as "Chuckie or Chandler, or I dunno -- something mannish like that".
* TookALevelInBadass: Part of Episode 7 is dedicated to Charlie learning to come into her own as the Princess of Hell and gaining the confidence to lead Sinners in a direct confrontation with the Exorcists.
-->''For the first time in my life I might have to be ready for this,\
Ready to be the one who's leading from the front.\
Got to come into my own, got to come into my throne!\
Got to take charge and defend my only home.\
And although I kind of feel unsteady now I need to be ready for this.''
* TragicDream: Putting aside whether anyone can or even wants to be redeemed, Charlie's dream of redeeming sinners is doomed to fail due to one factor: ''Heaven''. Despite her best hopes, Charlie's meeting with Adam and Lute makes it clear that they refuse to even entertain the idea of sinners redeeming themselves, the idea of the exterminations being for "population control" being nothing but an excuse to slaughter sinners with impunity. Charlie's dream was just as reliant on Heaven actually accepting the idea of sinners being redeemed as it was on sinners wanting to redeem themselves. But this is a long shot at best because Heaven is dead set on slaughtering as many demons as they can and will use whatever excuse they can to justify it after the fact. [[spoiler: "Welcome to Heaven" later reveals that the exterminations are actually kept a secret from most of Heaven to begin with and only the Exorsists and the top Seraphim, Sera, knowing about them with the actual reason for them being Sera's fear of Hell eventually rebelling against Heaven. Not only does Charlie later learn this, but also the fact that even when one of her hotel's patrons actually does change for the better, he doesn't go to Heaven like she originally thought and that not even Heaven's leadership knows what it actually takes for a soul to reach Heaven in the first place. However, at the end of season 1, Sir Pentious becomes an AscendedDemon and gets into Heaven right in front of Sera and Emily after confessing his love For Cherri Bomb and making a HeroicSacrifice in the fight against Adam, proving that Charlie's dream actually is possible.]]
* TranquilFury: Normally, whenever Charlie is genuinely enraged at whoever or whatever offended her, she's [[RageBreakingPoint notably incensed]] even tapping into her demonic powers. However, upon learning [[spoiler:Vaggie has been lying about her actually being an Exorcist Angel, Charlie is left shocked and angry at the lie. This is a huge indicator of how hurt Charlie was at Vaggie's lie and supposedly not trusting her with her true origin]].
* UnskilledButStrong: Charlie is among the most powerful entities in Hell, surpassed only by her parents. In the season one finale, she displayed an impressive feat of strength when she made Adam bleed and absorbed his full-powered surprise punch without any negative consequences. According to an official source, Charlie's power surpasses even that of TheDreaded Alastor, making her a formidable force among the denizens of Hell. However, due to her lack of battle experience and unpredictable temperament, she tends to hold back from revealing her true capabilities. [[spoiler:When she finally decides to unleash her full abilities against Adam, her inexperience causes her to be quickly overpowered, [[CurbStompCushion despite landing a solid hit first.]]]]
* UptownGirl: She's the Princess of Hell while her girlfriend, Vaggie, is a common mortal soul. [[spoiler:Or so she seems. Vaggie is actually a fallen exorcist, which makes her more similar to Charlie's father in terms of status.]]
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: Although Charlie is usually hard to anger and it's Vaggie regularly being this trope, "The Show Must Go On" shows that the former to be just as protective towards the latter. Throughout the battle with Heaven, Charlie is [[https://phoenixlionme.tumblr.com/post/742130529289355264 constantly following]] Vaggie around, being close by to help fend off any danger to her girlfriend. When fighting against the Exorcist Angels, Charlie initially kept saying ''"Sorry"'' every time she blocks or attacks them, only to use her powers at a group heading towards Vaggie; and unlike her earlier apologizing, she screams, ''"Die, motherfuckers!"''. And when she sees her girlfriend is being attacked by [[GeneralRipper Lute]], at two different times, Charlie immediately tries to go and rescue Vaggie, only to be stopped both times by [[ArcVillain Adam]]. And when the Exterminators are defeated and [[spoiler:Adam dead]], Charlies gives a [[DeathGlare terrifying]] [[https://twitter.com/HanasakuShijin/status/1753276912858710234 glare]] at an injured and distraught Lute while protectively holding Vaggie with one arm; given Charlie's demeanor, summoning her demonic form, and [[TranquilFury cold]] words to Lute of "it's over", it's implied that besides being incensed at Lute for trying to kill Vaggie, Charlie may have been told by her girlfriend that it was Lute that maimed her three years prior.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: She’s capable of transforming herself in a variety of ways to look more demonic such as growing horns, flashing razor-sharp teeth, turning her eyes red, and even growing a spiky tail. Since Seraphim are shown to have the ability to change their physical forms at will it's implied, she inherited this ability from her father.
* WarriorPrincess: Her full form has her materialize a wicked trident, along with spikier look and stereotypical demonic tail, and rides on one of her familiars as a DragonRider. Considering she's a nice, meek girl otherwise, if she ever gets into this form, [[GodzillaThreshold it's a sign that things have officially gone off the rails.]]
* WeaponBasedCharacterization: During the assault on the Hazbin Hotel she initially defends herself using an apple-themed shield and impressive but largely harmless [[BlindedByTheLight blasts of light]], showing she is committed to defending the hotel but not out for blood. [[spoiler:This changes the second Adam obliterates Sir Pentious, prompting her to discard the shield and draw an ornate angelic trident, showing she is now on the offensive and has no qualms about hurting Adam.]]
* WellDoneDaughterGirl: During a call to her mother, she says she's starting to think her father, Lucifer, is right about her. Regardless of what he actually said, her tone shows that she is clearly affected by her dad not believing in her. It also doesn't help that her mother is apparently so far off the grid that the call doesn't even connect to voicemail. As we later find out, her mother has been off the grid for 7 years and her father has fallen into depression and [[ParentalNeglect has been emotionally distant at best.]]
* WhatsUpKingDude: The Princess of Hell regularly leaves her home and mingles with her people, although they don’t give her the respect that her station demands.
* WhatTheHellHero: [[spoiler:When making her case about the necessity of the Hotel and her plans for redeeming demons and Sinners in the court of Heaven itself, she finds out that the exterminations were intended to be a [[GovernmentConspiracy secret known only to the higher ranking and more militant angels]], and moreover that not even the angels know what the real requirements for entering Heaven are, and furiously calls them out on it. She and Emily also point out the hypocrisy of rejecting sinners who make real attempts to improve while the Exorcists are allowed to be as ruthless and bloodthirsty as possible with no repercussions because they've already "earned their place" in heaven. Finally, they point out that the Sinners have already been punished for their sins by being sent to Hell, making the Exterminations DisproportionateRetribution by definition.]]
* WideEyedIdealist: {{Downplayed}}. She's not enough of a fool to believe that ''every'' demon in Hell will want to redeem themselves, but she wants to give her subjects the chance. She ''was'' however enough of one to think Heaven would even ''entertain'' the idea of Sinners redeeming themselves, only to be made painfully aware just how impossible her dream is after meeting Adam.
* WillfullyWeak: The only people in Hell more powerful than Charlie are her parents, but you wouldn't know that from looking at her because of her bubbly PluckyGirl personality. Charlie is just too nice to throw her weight around. Vox has a bit of a freakout when he finds out Alastor is living with Charlie, as he worries any deal, they make will make Alastor too powerful to fight. While Charlie sometimes taps into her power and transforms into a more demonic-looking visage, she has never actually used her full power on anyone. 315* YouWouldntLikeMeWhenImAngry: Downplayed, she does indeed begin to look more and more demonic as she becomes angry, growing horns, her hair comes undone and flows eerily while her eyes glow red. 328Charlie's feisty yet sweet and caring girlfriend, who tries to support her despite her own doubts. She serves as the hotel's manager and protector. She initially posed as a moth-demon Sinner, but is revealed to be a fallen angel and former Exorcist.
----
* AccidentalMisnaming: Other than Charlie, it doesn't seem anyone can get her name right. It's in part being both unusual but close enough to other, more common names that people assume they misheard. Lucifer calls her "Maggie" when they're introduced, and in "The Show Must Go On", Sir Pentious mistakenly assumes her name to be "[[MythologyGag Vagatha]]".
* ActionGirlfriend: Downplayed. While Charlie is capable of [[ActionGirl kicking ass]] when the situation has truly become dire (like the Hotel being directly attacked by the Exorcists for one), Vaggie is the one who will resort to violence the quickest if she feels there's a threat.
* AintTooProudToBeg: Normally, Vaggie is defiant and unflappable in the face of her enemies, never showing fear at any form of intimidation. So, it becomes notably significant when she ''[[OOCIsSeriousBusiness does]]'' beg her former boss, [[PsychopathicManchild Adam]], to not reveal her FallenAngel Exorcist past to Charlie, not wanting to damage her relationship with the Princess. Unfortunately, her pleas go unanswered, and her lie is exposed.
* AlienBlood: It's eventually revealed that she has gold-colored blood due to actually being an Angel, contrasting the Sinners and Hellborn demons--who have a variety of blood colors.
* AllForNothing: Vaggie keeping her FallenAngel Exorcist past a secret from Charlie out of shame turned out to be all for nought. While Charlie was upset and hurt by the reveal, it stemmed from Vaggie lying about said past than actually being an Exorcist and the Princess would later vent to Alastor and Rosie that she would've accepted Vaggie's origin without hesitation, not understanding why her girlfriend felt the need to keep it a secret; and the other Hotel residents are rather blase about the entire reveal (if anything, the worst she gets is some teasing), and if her encounter with Carmilla Carmine is any indication, even Overlords don’t seem to care much about it. In other words, Vaggie had nothing to worry about if she had been honest with Charlie from the beginning.
* AllOfTheOtherReindeer: While it's unknown if Vaggie was well-liked among the Exorcist Angels prior to being [[FallenAngel abandoned]], she's this to them in the present. They all give a chorus of "boos" when Adam brings her up and cheer when he offers them a reward for her death. Lute's line about always knowing that Vaggie was "weak", implied that Vaggie was somewhat of an outcast before being abandoned.
-->'''Lute:''' Rip Vaggie's cunt-mouth out her ass!
* AlmightyJanitor: She seems like just an ordinary Sinner but is actually a [[FallenAngel former Exorcist]]. Angels in the Hellaverse are inherently stronger than demons and the Exorcists have been completely unopposed in their slaughter of Sinners for untold centuries until the start of the series due to how badly they outgun them, meaning that while Vaggie doesn't appear to be too notable in the angelic hierarchy, she is still stronger than the vast majority of Sinners in Hell.
* AmazingTechnicolorPopulation: Her skin is ashen gray.
* AmbiguouslyHuman: The reveal that Vaggie is a FallenAngel rather than a sinner brings her backstory into question. An official source has made mention of her being Salvadoran and having died sometime in the 2010s, but it's also mentioned that Adam gave her the name Vaggie and that she learned to build trust by fighting. Was Vaggie a human who ascended to Heaven, got a name change later, and learned to fight? Or was she an angel born in Heaven and given her name after racking up a bunch of kills during her stint as an Exorcist? The fact that she speaks Spanish and looks fairly human-like implies that the backstory of her being human once is true, but it's still unclear.
* AngelicBeauty: Vaggie turns out to be a FallenAngel, specifically an ex-Exorcist, and is a beautiful young woman. In fact, when Vaggie first met Charlie, the former has just been mutilated by [[AxCrazy Lute]], and was left in a state of mess, which included having a gouged-out eye. Even so, the moment Vaggie gave Charlie a grateful smile, the latter became romantically flustered.
* AngerIsNotEnough: Has to learn that all her anger and self-loathing won't be enough to fight against the extermination, and that she has to dig deep into ThePowerOfLove in battle instead of ThePowerOfHate.
* AnimalMotifs: Moths, though it's not immediately obvious. When seen from behind, her hair resembles folded moth wings. One can see how she'd be attracted to someone as bright as [[AllLovingHero Charlie]]. This is also reflected by how she was banished from Heaven in a brutal and painful fashion.
* AstonishinglyAppropriateAppearance: The fringe of hair covering her missing eye is shaped like an angel's wing, rotated 90°.
* TheAtoner: "Welcome to Heaven" reveals that she [[FallenAngel was an Exorcist]] who was [[BrokenAngel grounded, partially blinded]] and cast out by Lute and Adam after she spared a Sinner. After being found and patched up by Charlie, she eventually fell in love with her and devoted herself to Charlie's dream of redeeming Sinners, clearly regretful of her past and supporting her girlfriend in trying to stop the very Exterminations she was once a part of.
* AttackAttackAttack: Carmilla points out that the flaw in her fighting style and that of every other Exorcist is that she attacks with complete disregard for her own safety, since Sinners wouldn't ordinarily be capable of harming her.
* TheBabyOfTheBunch: A rather unique example. Of the entire main cast, Vaggie was the only one who died in the 2010s, the year 2014 to be exact, while everyone else died earlier (sans Charlie, who was born a demon and is over a hundred years old). Thus, Vaggie is the youngest "death" of the group. How true that is though is called into question with TheReveal she's a FallenAngel rather than a Sinner, and that she didn't ''die'' to end up in Hell but was ''left'' for dead by Adam and Lute before Charlie found her. So, it's unclear if, like Adam, she died in her mortal life and became an Angel, or if the idea she "died" was a fabrication to go with her cover story of being a Sinner. Either way, she's only been in Hell for three years prior to the start of the series while the others have been there for decades--if not centuries.
* BadLiar: She's repeatedly shown to be an extremely bad liar, most notably when she doesn't want to go visit Heaven with Charlie and the best excuse she can think of is [[INeedToGoIronMyDog "I have that thing"]]. Serves as early {{Foreshadowing}} of her actually being an angel who naturally wouldn't have much experience with lying. She even realizes it InUniverse:
-->'''Vaggie:''' Fuck, I'm such a bad liar...
* BattleCouple: She and her girlfriend Charlie fight side-by-side when Adam and the Exterminators come to attack the Hotel.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: "Welcome to Heaven" shows Vaggie and Charlie's first meeting, which came directly after Adam and Lute mutilated Vaggie and left her for dead. Charlie, upon seeing the sorry state Vaggie was in, wasted no time in bandaging her up, which caused Vaggie to fall for her.
* BenevolentBoss: Of a different sort than [[WideEyedIdealist Charlie]], as after her girlfriend, Vaggie is the second-in-command, being the manager. And while Vaggie can be short-tempered, strict, bossy, and judgmental, she is by ''no'' means a cruel person. While she's flawed, she's also proven to be protective, respectful, and loyal person to the Hotel occupants. And before she goes to get vital information from Carmilla Carmine on how to defeat the Exorcist Angels, Vaggie doesn't force the residents to stay and fight, but [[LineInTheSand allows them the choice to leave for their own safety]]; and during this moment, her [[ExpressiveAccessory bow]] droops down in sadness, showing how she's come to care about them during their time together.
* BewareTheQuietOnes: Vaggie is a quiet, emotionally guarded person who has a hard time opening up about her feelings, sometimes even to Charlie. However, she's a skilled spear user, has a sharp mind, and proves to be [[PintSizedPowerhouse stronger than her short height implies]]. Then, it's revealed she was once a ruthless Exorcist Angel, with Adam even referring to her as "one of [his] top girls" and states that Vaggie's kill count was in the ''thousands''. This may mean she has a higher kill count than ''[[TheDreaded Alastor]]''.
* BilingualBonus: She angrily mutters "come mierda malparido" [[note]]Spanish for "eat shit, motherfucker"[[/note]] while in the limousine, and later calls Alastor a "cabrón hijo de perra"[[note]]Spanish for "bastard son of a bitch"[[/note]] right in front of his face.
* BloodKnight: Possibly due to her angelic nature, Vaggie actually enjoys violence and fighting. She was one of Heaven's top exorcists raking up thousands of kills by herself, her idea of a bonding exercise is to take the Hotel patrons out to a battlefield and have them look out for each other, and right before the battle Vaggie admits that she's really excited and hasn't been able to stab anything and really mean it for a long time. [[EvenEvilHasStandards However]], [[WouldntHurtAChild she draws a line when it comes to harming children.]]
* BodyguardCrush: Unlike typical examples of this tropes, Vaggie is already in a stable and committed relationship with the target of her affections. Despite Charlie being the Princess of Hell, and thus leagues above Vaggie in terms of raw power, Vaggie has [[DeclarationOfProtection pledged]] to protect Charlie from any threats and/or insults.
* BodyguardingABadass: As Charlie's self-appointed protector; on paper, Charlie is leagues more powerful than Vaggie ever could be. But since Charlie is too nice to wield that power except in rare circumstances, Vaggie fights on her behalf.
* BoomerangBigot: She's a FallenAngel and has often told Charlie negative things about angels (i.e., they can't be trusted). Given her guilt and self-loathing over her past as an Exorcist and that she was mutilated and abandoned by her superiors for showing a demon child mercy, her attitude is justified.
* BoxingLessonsForSuperman: In "Hello Rosie", Carmilla drives in how the fighting style she and the other Exorcists use leaves themselves wide open if they're facing someone that can hurt them, and drills in some advice on how to overcome these flaws.
* BraidsOfAction: She mentions her long hair gets in the way when she's fighting, so she wears it in a high ponytail when she knows she's heading for battle. She had short hair back when she was an exorcist and first learned how to fight.
* BrokenAngel: After Lute caught her sparing a demon child, she proceeded to gouge out Vaggie's left eye, then tore her wings off her back as Adam took her halo, the two leaving her a bloody mess. Had Charlie not found her, she likely would have bled to death in an alleyway. Losing these traits at least let Vaggie use the cover story she was a Sinner. During her training session with Carmilla in the episode “Hello, Rosie!”, she gains a new pair of wings, though she can retract them into her back.
* BrutalHonesty: Whenever Charlie is too nice to properly criticize something, Vaggie is there to give the unfiltered version of Charlie's thoughts. Emphasized in the first episode when Charlie is trying not to badmouth Alastor's rather insulting commercial.
-->'''Charlie:''' We want people to ''want'' to come here, ''this'' makes it look...ummm...\
'''Vaggie:''' Bad. The word you're looking for is "bad".
* BuffySpeak: When she tries to object to a bar in the Hotel.
-->'''Vaggie:''' This is supposed to be a place that discourages sin! Not some kind of... mouth... brothel... man-cave!
* BullyingADragon: She's brave enough to threaten '''[[TheDreaded Alastor]]''' with her spear, despite knowing ''exactly'' who he is and the terrible powers he wields. It makes more sense after the reveal that she's a FallenAngel; as great as Alastor's powers are, Vaggie has no reason to believe he is any more of a threat to her than any other Sinner. [[MuggingTheMonster That in turn means everyone who gets on her nerves in the series is taunting one of the people who go on a yearly unopposed murderous rampage and is mostly kept alive by Vaggie not wanting to look like a monster in front of Charlie]]. Ultimately a [[ZigZaggingTrope zig-zagged example]], as while she certainly had the means to kill someone like Alastor, Carmilla Carmine points out her overall fighting technique is [[AttackAttackAttack rather sloppy]]. Vaggie somewhat overcomes this through [[BoxingLessonsForSuperman Carmilla pointing out these flaws]], but her rematch with Lute proves that she still has a long way to go to overcome this issue.
* ButtMonkey: In the pilot, she watches her girlfriend humiliate herself live on camera, is constantly disrespected by Angel Dust, and gets shoved around and teased by Alastor. This is downplayed in the series itself, though she is still very much TheComicallySerious.
* CaptainSmoothAndSergeantRough: Charlie is the undisputed leader of the Hotel and is able to use her charisma to inspire people to follow along with her vision, Vaggie is her undisputed second-in-command and treats the guests as though she's their drill sergeant, using more practical and aggressive methods to force the guests to play along.
* CategoryTraitor: Vaggie is seen as this by both Lute and Adam, especially the former, for sparing a Sinner child instead of executing him. A brief moment with the other Exterminators in "The Show Must Go On" implies that they also see Vaggie as this.
* CharacterBlog: She runs the hotel's official Instagram account that she shares with Charlie called [[https://instagram.com/hotel_magnement/ hotel_magnement]].
* CharacterizationMarchesOn:
** A minor case. In the Pilot, she was vocally opposed to Husk running a bar at the hotel, saying their job is to ''discourage'' sin and that alcohol would just be temptation, leaning closer to a DryCrusader. In the series proper, she's a lot more open to the idea, even telling Angel Dust off for flirting with Husk so he could focus on his job, and Husk later stating she regularly drinks there, letting him hear her woes when she succumbs to InVinoVeritas.
** She was much more irritable with other demons, not hesitating to yell at them for their behavior (especially Angel Dust who is their sole patron), but in the series, while bossy, she doesn't seem nearly as angry or fed up.
** The pilot treats her as a ButtMonkey, having her be disrespected or ignored by multiple characters, she's taken much more seriously in the show.
** In the pilot, Angel Dust theorizes that Vaggie has a [[DoesNotLikeMen strong dislike and/or distrust]] towards men, which she doesn't confirm nor deny. In the series proper, Vaggie is shown to be just as standoffish and emotionally guarded to both men and women equally.
* ClingyJealousGirl: Her expression when seeing Charlie and Emily holding hands is a wide-eyed DeathGlare.
* CloudcuckoolandersMinder: She does a lot to manage her girlfriend's oddities. Her first scene is keeping Charlie focused on a script they prepared together and ''not'' to sing. Then there's her reaction to Charlie's [[MissingStepsPlan "plan"]] for the hotel, which is supportive but tempered with more down-to-earth expectations.
* CombatPragmatist: While fighting Lute inside the hotel, she brings down a section of collapsed wall on top of her.
* TheConfidant: Charlie tells her ''everything'' -- her hopes, dreams, fears, insecurities, and even her favorite deodorant.
* ControlFreak: Her [[https://twitter.com/HazbinHotel/status/992872171272732672 official bio]] describes her as a control freak. In the pilot, this is best displayed when she objects to Alastor adding a bar to the hotel, on the reason that it's supposed to be a place that discourages sin.
* CostumeEvolution: From the pilot to the series, Vaggie's attire is redesigned from a casual white dress and mismatched stockings (one striped, one solid) to a more businesslike red blouse and black skirt with stockings that match.
* CrazyEnoughToWork: In "Scrambled Eggs," her idea of a trust exercise is literally throwing everyone off a roof into an active war zone and making them fight for their lives together. It works.
* CruelMercy: She lets [[ArchEnemy Lute]] live because she thinks that having her live with the shame of being spared by a "miserable failure" like herself is preferable over killing her outright (though adds it only really applies as this trope due to Lute's pathetic ego, compared to herself or Sir Pentious who made use of their second chances). Of course, this turns out to have been [[NiceJobBreakingItHero a bad idea]] because Lute is too fanatically focused on killing sinners to allow it to slow her down, even tearing off her own arm in order to resume the fight. The death of Adam and the first failure of their exterminations only forces Lute to re-commit their genocidal end goal for another time, and she ends up taking Adam's place in leading the Exorcists, now more focused than ever on making Charlie and the hotel inhabitants pay.
* CuteLittleFangs: While not as prominent as Charlie's, Vaggie's are visible on occasion. (They were especially notable during the Pilot, where [[ScaryTeeth her entire mouth would occasionally have seemed to be filled with them]], but that appears to have been a bit of early character design that was changed.) Interestingly, she does not appear to have had them prior to her fall. Though given that Lucifer has a far more [[OneWingedAngel monstrous, inherently demonic form]] despite still being a (fallen) seraphim, it's most likely that prolonged exposure to Hell causes angels to slowly adapt more demonic traits. This is supported by the fact Lucifer was banished since the accidental creation of Hell, while Vaggie was punished and kicked out from Heaven 3 years before the events of the pilot.
* DarkAndTroubledPast: Heavily implied, since in "Scrambled Eggs," her idea of building trust among the crew is how she learned trust: serving in combat together. Though it turns out, her own past was more complex. She may or may not have been involved in Hell's many turf wars, but the truth is that she was a former Exorcist partaking in the annual purge when she realized a demon she was hunting down was just a child, and sparing the kid cost her everything. And while not fully explored, Vaggie's sour expressions throughout the performance of the "Welcome to Heaven" song implies that even before she was abandoned, she had grown disillusioned with Heaven.
* DeadpanSnarker: While she does her best to take thing seriously compared to Charlie, she does crack jokes every now and then at the expense of those who have it coming.
* DealWithTheDevil: Downplayed. In the first episode, she makes a deal with Alastor -- he helps make a proper commercial for the Hotel if she doesn't ask him to be involved with televisions anymore. And unlike most of the deals in this universe, their deal isn't a MagicallyBindingContract but a verbal promise.
* DeclarationOfProtection: In "Scrambled Eggs", she sings an entire song about how she'll do whatever it takes to protect Charlie.
-->''When I saw your face\
You made me feel like a stranger in a brand new place\
And it felt so good to be understood\
But there's so much I wished that I could say\
So I... I'll be your armor\
Do whatever it takes, I'll make the mistakes\
I'll spend my life being your partner''
* DefectorFromDecadence: {{ZigZagged|Trope}} in the sense that on paper a FallenAngel in the service of[[note]](and, yes, servic''ing'')[[/note]] the daughter of Lucifer Morningstar would be [[InvertedTrope the exact opposite]]. However:
** A) She was part of a host sent down annually to indiscriminately and needlessly cull the ranks of unsaved souls at the behest of a prideful sadist who would have been a better fit in Hell than the Heaven his actions were concealed from before being maimed and left to bleed out for showing mercy.
** B) She's shacking up with and trying to help ''{{Princess|Classic}} freaking [[AntiAntiChrist Charlie]]''.
* DemonOfHumanOrigin: Like all sinners, she was once a human before dying and becoming a demon in Hell. {{Subverted|Trope}} when it's revealed she's actually a FallenAngel, or perhaps just a fired Angel. She used to be one of the Exorcists who came down from Heaven for the extermination, but when she showed a demon mercy, Lute gouged out her eye, and berated her for her actions before tearing her wings off and Adam took her Halo. Stranded in Hell, she had little choice but to pose as a sinner.
* DeviousDaggers: Favors bladed weapons and throws at Angel Dust with remarkable accuracy, to stop him from playing with the window slider in the limo. Unsurprising, given her background as a former Exorcist who has killed thousands of demons using the same sharp weapons before.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Confronts Alastor at spear-point in "Let’s Misbehave" and insults him to his face; the Cthulhu part comes with the fact he's [[TheDreaded feared by the denizens of Hell]] and is both a [[SerialKiller mass killer]] and [[TheChessmaster cunning mastermind]]. Vaggie, along with Charlie and Angel, are lucky that he doesn't want to harm them, [[DoNotTauntCthulhu as he makes it clear that he is more than capable of doing so]]. However, with the reveal that Vaggie was once an exorcist, and given that as a rule angels are inherently more powerful than demons, it's very likely that she's strong enough to match Alastor anyway.
* DidYouJustRomanceCthulhu: She's a DemonOfHumanOrigin who's in a relationship with the Devil's daughter. At least on the surface. In truth, she's an exiled Exorcist who was left behind by Lute and Adam after sparing a demon child during an extermination. This slightly closes the power gap between them although Charlie is still far stronger due to being half Seraphim.
* DoesNotLikeMen: She gets accused of this by Angel, and her silent response might be implying some truth to that. This doesn't seem to carry over into the series proper, given she's just as [[GoodIsNotNice guarded, but reasonable]] with men as she is with anyone else. Which is almost impressive considering her [[BadBoss treatment]] at the hands of [[StrawMisogynist the first man]].
* TheDogBitesBack: When she was an exorcist angel, Adam let Lute slash out her eye and tear off her wings for the sin of sparing a demon child, and they left her for dead in Hell. Then, he tried to blackmail her into helping them shut the hotel down and revealed her past to Charlie to try and ruin their relationship. So, when he dies a humiliating and painful death as Niffty stabs him numerous times, Vaggie watches the spectacle with a huge smile and enjoys watching her ex-boss get what’s coming to him.
* DrillSergeantNasty: She tends to act like drill sergeant whenever she tries to act authoritarian, such as in "Scrambled Eggs" when she forces Angel and Sir Pentious into a turf war battle so they can become FireForgedFriends and in "Dad Beat Dad" when she orders the staff to prepare for Lucifer's arrival. As she's a former Exorcist angel, who essentially act like soldiers, she likely learnt the attitude from her military-like training in Heaven.
* DryCrusader: Implied, since she strongly objects to the hotel serving alcohol, though moreso because it's an activity that leads to sin rather than taking issue with it by itself.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: Vaggie was once a ruthless Angel Exorcist, racking up kills in the ''thousands''. However, she was unable to kill a Sinner child and allowed him to escape. This would lead to her getting mutilated and kicked out of Heaven. However, her act of moral restraint would also lead to her being rescued and tended to by Charlie, which would lead to their romance and Vaggie's official HeelFaceTurn.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: When she was an Exorcist, her hair was short, and looked like Lute's. In the present, it's much longer, almost as if it's meant to be a replacement for her wings that were torn off. It also helped her disguise herself as a moth-demon Sinner due to resembling.
* ExpressiveAccessory: Her bow curves and sharpens whenever she gets particularly pissed, making it look like a pair of horns. And in rare moments of sadness, her bow will flop down.
* EyepatchOfPower: She wears an eyepatch with a pink X over her left eye; the X shows through her hair at all times, though.
* EyeScream: When she was exiled from Heaven Lute stabbed her in her left eye, tore it out and crushed it.
* FallenAngel: She was exiled from Heaven for showing mercy to a demon child during one of the Exterminations. Lute took out Vaggie's eye, removed her halo, and sliced off her wings before leaving her to die. However, Vaggie never told Charlie this fact; Charlie only finds out in "Welcome to Heaven" when Adam spills the beans [[EvilIsPetty just to spite her and Charlie]].
* FashionableAsymmetry: In the pilot, her left stocking has pink stripes while her right one is flat grey, her left glove is fingerless while her right has fingers, and her undershirt only has a left shoulder strap. Her design for the series proper does away with this and makes her much more symmetrical.
* {{Flight}}: As a FallenAngel, she used to have wings and the ability to fly. After an impromptu training lesson from Carmilla, Vaggie is able to regrow them, and they now act as RetractableAppendages.
* FlorenceNightingaleEffect: Charlie taking in and helping Vaggie heal from her wounds may not be the only reason Vaggie fell for her, but it certainly formed a solid bedrock to build upon.
* {{Foreshadowing}}: Her spear and X-marked eyepatch, both reminiscent of Exorcists, were right in front of the audience the entire time, and Carmilla even says [[PaperThinDisguise it's very obvious]]. Further, Vaggie regularly slips and refers to Sinners and Hell as ''Charlie's'' people and realm, suggesting she sees herself as distinct from them.
* FormerBigot: It's revealed later on that Vaggie used to be an Exorcist Angel, and thus, initially held the same "Sinners are all bad and must be executed" views as her former fellow companions. After sparing a demon child, she was left mutilated and abandoned by her superiors before being found and rescued by Charlie. In the present, Vaggie harbors no prejudice towards Sinners, and any hatred is for a specific few for justified reasons. [[ZigZaggingTrope That being said]], she [[BoomerangBigot sure hates angels now]].
* FriendlessBackground: Faustisse revealed that outside of Charlie she doesn't have any friends. This might be because most of her friends are in Heaven but some lines from Lute and how the other Exorcists all boo at her name and ''cheer'' at the idea of killing her, it's implied that even in Heaven and among the other Exorcists, she didn't have actual friendships with them. However, over the months of genuinely bonding with the other Hotel occupants, Vaggie comes to see them as friends.
* GoblinFace: Her face gets comically exaggerated wrinkles whenever she's truly angry.
* GoodIsNotNice: Vaggie is determined and loyal to Charlie's lofty goals, protective over the Hotel staff/residents, and is one of the more moral characters in the show. She's also the most emotionally guarded and can be ruthless when pushed.
* GoodWingsEvilWings: The Exorcists have black-lined wings with black stripes to demonstrate that the supposedly angelic creatures are anything but, a trait Vaggie shared when she was one of them. When she grows her wings back, they're now grey to match her hair, showing that Vaggie has moved beyond her past.
* GratuitousSpanish: She [[ForeignCussWord swears in Spanish]] when she confronts Alastor, referring to him as "Cabrón hijo de perra".[[note]]Spanish for “Bastard son of a bitch”.[[/note]]
* GrowingWings: In "Hello Rosie", Vaggie manages to regrow the wings that Lute had ripped off of her. "The Show Must Go On" shows that she can apparently let them out and retract them at will, though she spends most of the time with them hidden.
* HairTriggerTemper: The only person she's calm around is Charlie, but with everyone else it's very easy to piss her off, something both Angel and Alastor take great pleasure in doing. By the time of the series, while her temper is still there, she's considerably more mellow.
* HairWings: In her pilot design, Vaggie's long hair combined with the stripes at its ends bore a resemblance to moth wings. In the series, her hair is shaped like folded moth wings.
* HandicappedBadass: She's missing an eye and (for most of Season 1) her wings, but it doesn't seem to do anything to prevent her from being the highly capable bodyguard of the Princess of Hell. She even matches up pretty well against her fellow angels, carving through hordes of generic Exorcist soldiers during Adam's assault on the Hotel and narrowly scraping out a win against his best warrior (and her former superior) Lute.
* HeelFaceTurn: In the past she was one of the most bloodthirsty and ruthless Exorcists under Adam's command. But after she became a FallenAngel for sparing a demon child instead of killing them, and met Charlie shortly after, she goes on great lengths to support Charlie's dream.
* HiddenDepths:
** {{Invoked|Trope}}, as WordOfGod described her as a skilled dancer.
** The prequel comics shows Vaggie being a talented artist.
** She was an Exorcist. And since she was caught in the act of showing a demon mercy, she had all of her angelic trappings stripped away from her (and an eye), subsequently left for dead and stranded in Hell, where she was nursed back to health by Charlie, falling for her in the process.
* HidingBehindYourBangs: She's a guarded woman whose bangs spill over the left side of her head, which covers her missing eye.
* HidingYourHeritage: Justified. Vaggie was once an Exorcist Angel but was left near death by Lute and Adam because she spared a demon child. Given she's from a group of people who perform yearly exterminations in Hell, she had to hide her true origins for her own safety. Also, she fell in love with the Princess of Hell, so not wanting to hurt her girlfriend was also a huge factor.
* HolyHalo: She used to have one as an Exorcist angel, but Lute ripped it off along with her eye and wings while punishing her for sparing a demon child.
* HonestAdvisor: To Charlie, as she is not only the manager of the Hotel but also the former's girlfriend and main confidant. Vaggie will always be gently but firmly honest with Charlie about what may be best for them and the Hotel. To everyone else, Vaggie will still be direct but [[BrutalHonesty more brutal]] in manner, especially if they are mocking to her or Charlie.
* HonorBeforeReason: She spares Lute out of a desire to inflict CruelMercy upon her, which leaves Lute incapacitated for all about a minute before the exorcist is immediately back on the attack, preventing her from helping Charlie when fighting Adam.
* HotConsort: Vaggie is a regular Sinner in a committed and loving relationship with the Princess of Hell. Even after TheReveal that the former is a FallenAngel doesn't change her from this trope. In fact, even with her eye gouged out, Charlie still became romantically flustered when the former smiled at her.
* HumanoidAbomination: She's among the most human-looking demons in Hell. This is despite actually being a FallenAngel.
* HunterOfHerOwnKind: When it's discovered that Exorcist Angels ''can'' be injured, despite initial shock at the reveal, Vaggie doesn't hesitate to help with getting the information from Carmilla Carmine under Charlie's orders. During the party before the fight against the Exorcists, Vaggie tells Charlie she's actually happy that she's going to stab something and for the right reasons. And during the battle, Vaggie doesn't hold back against killing them, unlike [[ApologeticAttacker Charlie]].
* HypercompetentSidekick: Vaggie is the undisputed [[NumberTwo second-in-command]] at the Hazbin Hotel and acts as the more serious, grounded counterpart to Charlie's flighty, sometimes overly idealistic standings. She also serves as being a honest consultant to Charlie in times the latter is need of help.
* IHatePastMe: It's implied, especially by some of the lines in "Out For Love", that Vaggie hates and regrets her past as an Exorcist.
* InformedAttribute: She's stated to be fashioned after a Moth, but aside from her hair vaguely resembling folded up Moth wings, there's nothing suggesting such like the more obvious {{animal motif}}s other Sinners have. Becomes {{justified|Trope}} with the reveal she's not a Sinner at all, but an Angel, her hair originally being much shorter and similar to Lute's, the claim of her being a Moth serving to go with her cover story she's a Sinner, and a bit of foreshadowing to the idea her wings were torn off, as "ripping the wings off a moth" is a term associated with torturing someone like she was.
* InsecureLoveInterest: "Scrambled Eggs" shows that she feels unworthy of being Charlie's girlfriend and thinks that if she can't help her, her existence is meaningless. Made even more apparent in "Welcome To Heaven" with TheReveal that Vaggie is a former Exorcist who had a change of heart and wound up being left for dead by Lute and Adam. Her dedication to Charlie comes from her guilt over being an Exorcist mixed with her guilt over having never told Charlie her true identity.
* InterspeciesRomance: With Charlie. While the former is half-Seraphim Angel and half demon, Vaggie turns out to be a FallenAngel.
* {{Irony}}:
** Despite angels being often thought of as kindly, noble figures, Vaggie became a FallenAngel because she showed mercy to a Sinner child.
** She happens to be the first person who tried to redeem herself with Charlie’s help, and she’s a literal FallenAngel (a.k.a. “supposedly” one of the most irredeemable entities in the universe).
** Vaggie was once a ruthless Exorcist Angel, with Adam implying she has murdered ''thousands'' of Sinners. Now, she is protective towards the Sinner occupants of the Hotel meant to redeem them and is also the steadfast, loyal girlfriend NumberTwo to the Princess of Hell.
** It is implied that Vaggie became disillusioned with Heaven during her time there and it's also implied she was ostracized by her fellow Exorcists; plus, she was basically a bloodthirsty soldier trained to kill numerous Sinner without thought. In Hell, Vaggie gained a loving relationship with the Princess, found true friends in the Hazbin Hotel occupants, and became a protector for said occupants from any danger. In short, Vaggie was miserable and lone in the supposed great Heaven but found true happiness in the alleged terrible Hell.
* ItsPersonalWithTheDragon: Lute acts as Vaggie's ArchEnemy, being the one who sliced out her eye and ripped off her wings.
* ItWasWithYouAllAlong: In "Hello Rosie", Vaggie goes to Carmilla to find the secret of killing Exorcists, only for Carmilla to tell her that angelic steel, like her spear, is the key. Vaggie is surprised to find out that it's that simple instead of some secret weapon that Carmilla, Hell's top arms dealer, came up with, wondering [[YouHaveGotToBeKiddingMe how no one else had figured it out if it's really that simple]].
* JerkassHasAPoint:
** In the pilot, Vaggie's near-murderous anger at Angel Dust is understandable given how his actions completely ruined Charlie's promotion of the Happy Hotel.
** Her extreme distrust of Alastor is ''well'' within reason given how the Overlord is TheDreaded who also admits to ''not'' wanting to see the Hotel succeed. Charlie agrees with her during a private chat, but she forces herself to work with him to make sure the Hotel is a success.
** While justifiably annoyed with Alastor's taunts and mocking, Vaggie makes an accurate note towards the Overlord -- that if he doesn't actually help get the Hotel more notoriety than Sinners won't want to check in and possibly fail at being redeemed, meaning his whole goal of wanting to be entertained by their supposed futile efforts won't happen. This actually gets to Alastor, allowing him to help her out.
** Vaggie's method of getting the Hotel residents to bond is via surviving a turf war is, as Charlie points out, hilariously over-the-top, the former's seemingly crazy idea actually works. When Vaggie returns to the Hotel, she is delightfully surprised that the once distrustful, fighting occupants are now getting along.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Of a different sort than Angel Dust, and mostly justified. She seems to genuinely be a decent person, and she has a nice, stable relationship with her girlfriend Charlie. The fact that she’s grumpy and hostile towards other demons is down to the fact that they’re all bastards who deliberately antagonize her and her girlfriend. In the series proper, Vaggie's hot temperedness is downplayed, and while still bossy and judgmental, she shows a softer side to the other Hotel occupants.
* KarmicJackpot: Vaggie was once a ruthless and bloodthirsty Exorcist Angel but couldn't bring herself to kill a Sinner child and let him escape. However, her superiors discovered her act and punished her for it. She would've most likely died of her wounds if she hadn't been found and nurtured by Charlie on that same night. While most of her past as an Exorcist is still a mystery and Vaggie sparing the Sinner child cost her place in Heaven, it's implied she was disillusioned with her old home before she had been abandoned, and that she didn’t have any friends nor meaningful relationships back there, if Lute’ words can be taken as facts. Even so, with her act of mercy, Vaggie would start a happily committed relationship with Charlie, one of the gentlest and kindest people in all of Hell. And through helping Charlie with the Hotel, Vaggie would also gain genuine friends who would protect and care for her.
* KickedOutOfHeaven: Vaggie was previously a soldier in the exorcist angels' legions before getting her wings (and an eye) cut off by her superiors for allowing a demon child to run away, dooming her to remain in Hell.
* KnightInSourArmor: Vaggie may be skeptical and have a sour disposition, but she's determined to help Charlie redeem Sinners.
* LadyAndKnight: A same-sex variant, Vaggie is the White Knight to Charlie's Bright Lady. Best illustrated in the song "Whatever it Takes", where Vaggie [[DeclarationOfProtection declares]] she'll be Charlie's "armor".
* TheLancer: She's the partner and closest ally of Charlie, who's the main heroine of the story, usually trying to be a voice of reason to counterbalance Charlie's idealism and being ''way'' more willing to resort to violence in a situation than her.
* LeftForDead: After being caught sparing a Sinner child, Lute mutilates Vaggie and the former (with Adam) leave her to presumably die from her wounds.
* LetMeAtHim: During Alastor's VillainSong, Angel can be seen holding back an enraged Vaggie from attacking him.
* LiarRevealed: Downplayed to "Omitting the Truth Revealed", but Vaggie is desperate to make sure Charlie never finds out her status as a FallenAngel, to the point that she [[AintTooProudToBeg begs Adam to not tell her]], and her reaction to Charlie's horror and devastation to Vaggie's past as a former Exorcist is clear regret. Where it is downplayed is that the others' reactions are pretty blasé besides Charlie, who herself seems more hurt and distant because Vaggie felt she couldn't tell her the truth in the first place. This also deconstructed by the fact that the only reason why she hid her true origins to Charlie is because she was ashamed of being the same thing that mercilessly slaughtered thousands of Sinners, and because at this point, even by knowing the truth, her past has no longer impact in the grand scheme of things anyway, as in her 3 years old relationship with Charlie, Vaggie proved to be the most loyal supporter of the latter’s dream to redeem damned souls and a sweet girlfriend.
* LightIsGood: She is actually a fallen angel who wants to try her best redeem sinners to support her girlfriend's dreams.
* LikeParentLikeSpouse: Despite the surface level differences between the two, Vaggie has a number of similarities to her girlfriend's father, Lucifer Morningstar.
** The biggest is that they're both {{fallen angel}}s -- and they're the only two known instances of such in the setting, although Charlie wasn't aware of this for a long time -- and thematically, both of them were cast out of Heaven for going against what was expected of them (Vaggie refusing to kill a Sinner child, Lucifer offering Free Will to humanity).
** Both of them are very insecure about themselves in similar ways - They are shameful of their respective troubled pasts, feel regret over certain actions they had towards Sinners (Lucifer gifting humans with Free Will that led to Hell; Vaggie for participating in the annual exterminations). Their respective deep insecurities also include how they can be a good girlfriend/father to Charlie, but both are still [[ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend highly]] [[PapaWolf protective]] and loving of the Princess. Both also have a habit of [[BridalCarry bridal carrying]] Charlie. They also both share a duet with Charlie expressing how important she is to them, with Vaggie's being a reprise of Lucifer's.
** While Vaggie fully supports her girlfriend's goals, she also has a similar cynicism regarding both Sinners and Heaven, like Lucifer. And both hold the similar belief that Heaven will not listen nor change their way of thinking.
** There are some noticeable similarities between the two in character design - They are both being way [[PintSizedPowerhouse stronger than their short height implies]], with them both being one of the shortest characters in the show. They adorn some sort of accessory - Lucifer's snake top hat/crown; Vaggie's red bow that resembles a moth. Once Vaggie is able to regrow her wings, like Lucifer, she can now [[RetractableAppendages retract]] them at will. In a subtler detail, both of the Angels' wings are unique in some way - Lucifer has six wings because he's a Seraphim and they become demonic if he chooses; upon further inspection, Vaggie's wings pre- and post-fall have a single stripe while the other Exorcists had two. And their hairstyles resemble their respective [[AnimalMotifs animal motifs]] - Lucifer's hair is in the style of a ducktail whip; Vaggie's hair resembles folded moth wings.
** They both show to having a [[BloodKnight liking for battle]], with Vaggie being excited to stab someone during the battle with Heaven and Lucifer laughing maniacally while nearly beating Adam to death.
** The duo have near identical moments in "The Show Must Go On" - they fight and gain the upper hand in a fight with someone they have tense, mutually hateful relationship with (Vaggie with Lute; Lucifer with Adam). Despite their personal hatred, both Vaggie and Lucifer show mercy, albeit CruelMercy, to their respective enemies. In a subtle note, they insult their said enemies with the same word - "bitch".
** Both Lucifer and Vaggie supported their respective lovers' seemingly dangerous and/or impossible dream when no one else would.
** They [[AllOfTheOtherReindeer aren't remembered fondly by their respective former associates]] in Heaven (the Exorcists for Vaggie, the other Seraphim for Lucifer). And in twist of irony, they were considered one of the most skilled/powerful members of their respective groups despite the ostracization.
** They both have a strong mutual dislike towards Alastor not only out of personal dislike at the Overlord's disrespectful attitude, it also is related to Charlie - Vaggie rightly fears that the Radio Demon is only trying to get close to Charlie for his own selfishness while Lucifer hates Alastor because the latter taunted the King of Hell into thinking he viewed Charlie as a daughter, worsening his insecurities as a father. Both have also been used as [[https://phoenixlionme.tumblr.com/post/750150571088117760 an armrest by the Overlord]].
* LineInTheSand: After Adam announces his plans to attack the Hotel first and foremost next Extermination, Vaggie notes to the other residents that they didn't sign up for a war and she understands if they choose now to leave. When she and Charlie return however, [[TrueCompanions they are all still there baricading the Hotel ready for the Exorcists.]]
* LipstickLesbian: Very feminine presenting and confirmed as a lesbian.
* LoveRedeems: Vaggie was once a ruthless Exorcist Angel before beng abandoned by her superiors for showing mercy towards a Sinner child. Afterwards, she was found and nursed back to health by her future girlfriend, Charlie. And Vaggie implies in the "More Than Anything" reprise that it was the friendship (and eventual) romantic love she and the Princess have for each other, helped further the former's redemption.
* MasculineFeminineGayCouple: PlayedWith in regard to her relationship with Charlie. Vaggie dresses more feminine than Charlie, but she acts in a more stereotypically masculine manner. She’s grumpy and closed off, and at the same time very brave and protective of her girlfriend.
* MeaningfulRename: Downplayed. When she was an Exorcist, Adam gave her, her name; however, the pronunciation was a soft "g". In the present, she still uses the name but with a hard "g" sound.
* MsExposition: Tells Angel Dust about who the Radio Demon is when he turns out to be clueless.
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: Vaggie is a genuinely good person and may be the only one among Sinners, who are described to be inherently irredeemable. Aside from being [[MurderIsTheBestSolution quick to point weapons at people]] despite the Hotel's principles of trust and forgiveness, and her possible military background, her presence in Hell is a mystery. As it turns out, Vaggie is a genuinely good person... among the ''Exorcists'', who are shown to be inherently psychopathic, murderous assholes. It turns out because she's ''not'' [[MurderIsTheBestSolution a complete murder freak]] and chose to spare a demon child, she was mutilated and exiled to Hell for aiding the enemy. As a result, she tries to warn Charlie that the Exorcists can't be trusted, calling them bloodthirsty and deranged.
* MysteriousPast: We know little of her past prior to the hotel, but her DrillSergeantNasty attitude in "Scrambled Eggs" and the way she talks about it implies that she was in some kind of military at some point. "Welcome to Heaven" reveals that she's a FallenAngel, a former Exorcist that Adam and Lute kicked out and left for dead because she spared a demon child, but aside from her being one of Adam's top soldiers nothing about her past is revealed.
* NeatFreak: According to Viv in [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=MqGEHNy3Wxo&t=6250 a livestream]], Vaggie is kind of a neat freak.
* NighInvulnerable: As a former Exorcist, Vaggie is nearly impossible to harm by any means except Angelic weaponry. Carmilla notes that this has given her a habit of fighting in a way that exposes herself, since she's accustomed to not needing to bother with defense.
* NoGoodDeedGoesUnpunished: The only reason Vaggie is no longer an Exorcist is due to [[WouldntHurtAChild sparing a demon child]]. This cost her [[EyeScream an eye]] and her wings, and she was left to die.
* NonStandardCharacterDesign: Downplayed in both cases.
** Vaggie's Exorcist wings look very similar to her former associates but if one were to look [[https://phoenixlionme.tumblr.com/post/744407356884074496 closely]], she has one defining feature separating her from them -- Vaggie was the only Exorcist with one stripe on her wings, instead of two. And even after she regrows a new pair, she still has the one stripe. Why she only had one stripe as opposed to two is currently unknown.
** During the annual Exterminations, Exorcist Angels were known to sport sadistic smiles when killing the Sinners. However, even while wearing her mask, Vaggie doesn't smile during the genocide but rather a frowning, angry expression.
* NotSoAboveItAll:
** Despite her stance against the bar being installed, Vaggie still drinks to the point of being drunk according to Husk's comments on Episode 4.
** When Niffty kills Adam in Episode 8, unlike everyone else, who is utterly shocked, Vaggie has a massive grin on her face and looks like she's on the verge of outright [[{{Squee}} squeeing]].
* NumberTwo: She acts as Charlie's right-hand, as Vaggie is the manager of the Hotel.
* OnlySaneWoman: She seems to be the voice of reason among the main trio. She handles calling out Angel Dust and rightly points out to Charlie that letting Alastor help them is a bad idea. However, Vaggie relents due to wanting Charlie's plan to work.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness:
** Even with their disagreements, Vaggie would always stand beside Charlie in the latter's endeavors while voicing her honest opinions. However, in the beginning of "Welcome to Heaven", Vaggie tries to ([[BadLiar badly]]) lie to Charlie about why she can't go to Heaven with her. And while she does relent, this is an important piece of foreshadowing of Vaggie's unusual behavior - She's a FallenAngel Exorcist who was abandoned by her superiors for sparing a Sinner child and doesn't want to go to Heaven and risk Charlie finding out.
** Vaggie doesn't easily show fear against enemies. But when [[BadBoss Adam]] is about to reveal Vaggie's past as a former Exorcist Angel to Charlie, Vaggie ''begs'' him not to in a genuinely scared voice.
* OppositesAttract: She and Charlie have opposing personalities: Charlie is upbeat, perky, constantly cheerful, and prone to breaking out in song. Vaggie is practical, perpetually frowns, has a temper, and is prone to resorting to violence. However, this is only on the surface level, and their relationship is deeper and more complex. Both are the most morally upright characters (granted, not a high bar), Charlie isn't as naive as her personality would imply and her motivation is her sorrow at seeing her people massacred each year, and Vaggie does believe in Charlie's dream even if she's skeptical if it can be achieved. This is also reflected by their backgrounds: Charlie is a hellborn demon, while Vaggie is a FallenAngel and a former Exorcist.
* PaperThinDisguise:
** While most sinners have obvious AnimalMotifs or are outright FunnyAnimals [[note]](or are obviously inhuman in [[NonHumanHead some]] [[BigRedDevil other]] [[{{Cyclops}} way]])[[/note]], Vaggie looks entirely human with her hair as the only indicator of her supposed moth theme. As it turns out this was an attempt to disguise her true nature as an Exorcist, who are {{Winged Humanoid}}s with no animalistic traits. The obviousness of her true identity is even {{lampshaded}} by Carmilla.
--->'''Carmilla:''' You have a giant "X" over your eye and wield an angelic spear. It's not rocket science.
** It ends up the same for the other side as well. While the telling traits get past everyone else in Heaven, Adam lampshades her overconfidence thinking he and Lute wouldn't recognize her with just a clothes and hair change.
* PerpetualFrowner: When she’s not looking like she’s about to murder someone, Vaggie tends to default into an annoyed-at-the-world frown. The only times she smiles is when talking to Charlie.
* PintSizedPowerhouse: She's the second shortest of the Hotel residents, after Niffty. However, despite her short height, Vaggie has proven to be stronger than she looks. During a training exercise, she was able to effortlessly grab, carry, and throw both the taller Sir Pentious and Angel Dust, with little effort. She turns out to be a FallenAngel, and angels are stronger than a vast majority of Hell's citizens, making her strength justified. And according to Adam, Vaggie was a ruthless Exterminator, with kills possibly in the thousands.
* PredatorTurnedProtector: Vaggie turned out to have been an Exorcist Angel three years prior to the series, as such she would murder a number of Sinners with little hesitation; according to Adam, her kill count was in the thousands. However, she couldn't bring herself to kill a Sinner child and was [[PunishedForSympathy punished]] for it by having her eye and wings ripped out. Thankfully, she was found by [[AllLovingHero Charlie]], and is now very dedicated to making sure Charlie's dream of redeeming Sinners come true. And, she has made it a [[DeclarationOfProtection vow]] to protect Charlie and the other demon Hotel occupants from danger, either from Hell or Heaven.
* PunishedForSympathy: Back when Vaggie was still an Exorcist, she encountered a terrified demon child and felt sorry enough for them to let them go away. The fact that she showed anything but complete disdain for demons and sinners led to [[GeneralRipper Lute]] cutting out her eye, ripping her wings off, and leaving her to die in Hell while the Exorcists finished the extermination and returned to Heaven.
* TheReliableOne: Vaggie is the most [[OnlySaneMan sane]] of the entire Hotel residents given Charlie's [[CloudCuckooLander flightiness]], Alastor's [[MoodSwinger unpredictability]], Husk's [[TheAlcoholic alcoholism]], Angel Dust's [[TheHedonist hedonism]], Niffty's [[AxCrazy psychoticness]], and Sir Pentious's [[IronButtMonkey slapstick magnet nature]]. At one point, Charlie states that Vaggie is the person she trusts the most. Which makes the reveal that Vaggie was a former Exorcist the whole time absolutely ''sting'' for the princess.
* RetractableAppendages: After she recovers her angel wings, she seemingly can retract them completely into her body at will.
* ScarsAreForever: Justified. Vaggie's eye was gouged out by Lute for "punishment" in sparing a Sinner child; the latter also ripped out Vaggie's first pair of wings. However, while she manages to regrow a new pair of the latter, she doesn't do so with the former. This is because Lute sliced out Vaggie's eye with her Angelic weapon, which turn out to be a weakness for Angels; but she didn't use said weapon on the latter's wings.
* ScaryTeeth: In the pilot she has a mouth full of sharp teeth that become more pronounced the more distressed she is.
* SexySecretary: In her final design, she somewhat has this aesthetic with her button-up blouse, tights, and short pencil skirt, plus her white-collar job, though she's actually the manager of the hotel.
* ShipperOnDeck: Vaggie gives a reassuring pat to Sir Pentious when the latter [[CannotSpitItOut attempts]] to confess his feelings to Cherri Bomb. She also pushes Charlie, also a shipper for the couple and is looking towards the couple in wide-eyed excitement, away to give said couple some [[LeaveTheTwoLovebirdsAlone privacy]].
* ShorterMeansSmarter: Downplayed. The other Hotel occupants aren't idiots and Vaggie has her own flaws as well. However, she is the most [[TheReliableOne reliable]] of them, often wanting to do the sensible solution in regard to a problem.
* SignatureHeadgear: Vaggie's hair is adorned with a red bow that's kinda shaped like the wings of a moth.
* SingingVoiceDissonance: When voicing Vaggie, Creator/StephanieBeatriz uses a fairly deep and almost masculine-sounding voice (very close to her delivery when playing [[Series/BrooklynNineNine Rosa]]), but uses her higher natural voice when singing, turning Vaggie into a mezzo-soprano instead of the expected alto.
* SingleWomanSeeksGoodMan: A same-sex example. Vaggie is deeply loyal to and in love with [[AntiAntiChrist Charlie]] for a number of the latter's positive qualities: [[NiceGirl kindness]], [[AllLovingHero compassion]], [[RoyalsWhoActuallyDoSomething selflessness]], [[HairOfGoldHeartOfGold gentleness]], and [[TheFettered being one of the most morally upright people in the show]]. Her portion of "[[DistantDuet Whatever It Takes]]" has Vaggie reveal snippets of what made her fall for Charlie when they first met: the demon princess made her feel like "a stranger in a brand-new place", possibly meaning how the former was a bright spot for her in [[CrapsackWorld Hell]]; she then sings how Charlie makes her feel understood. She mentions in "Masquerade" that one of the things she loves about Charlie is that she doesn't abuse her royal title to get what she wants. "Welcome to Heaven" reveals they first met after Vaggie was mutilated and left for dead by Lute and Adam; Charlie came to her aid and the reaction from her after Charlie bandaged her up implies that was the moment where her romantic feelings, if not friendship, for the Hell princess first appeared.
* SkeletonMotif: [[https://vignette.wikia.nocookie.net/hazbinhotel/images/0/05/10k_Thanks.jpg This]] official artwork has her wearing a skull themed dress with similar earrings.
* SourOutsideSadInside: A lot of her sour exterior is meant to hide her own self-loathing and inadequacies. She only tends to let her inner self out when alone, not even showing her issues to Charlie. Husk only knew about them because of her succumbing to InVinoVeritas whenever at his bar. It's implied these feelings stem from her past as an Exorcist and all the Sinners she's killed, as well as her lying to Charlie about her past and claiming she's a Sinner.
* SourSupporter: She’s doubtful of whether Charlie’s hotel will work, but she's still very supportive and invested in helping her.
* SpicyLatina: Downplayed. She's a Latina with a fiery temper, but it's not due to anger issues, it's from having many legitimate reasons to be pissed off. She’s also not sexualized by the show.
* TheSpock: She seems to act as a voice of reason for Charlie and the main cast as a whole.
* TheStoic: Downplayed. While Vaggie does act as the voice of reason for the main cast and usually has a [[PerpetualFrowner frown]] on her face, she's also prone to letting her anger issues get ahead of her in stressful situations. Other than that, she ''does'' smile more in the TV series, but usually keeps a neutral expression for professional reasons.
* StraightMan: In many of her dynamics with other characters, Vaggie plays the role of straight man. Whether it’s being the more grounded realistic girlfriend to Charlie’s naïve idealistic character or being [[StraightManAndWiseGuy someone who takes things seriously to a wisecracker]] like Angel Dust.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: While it's hard to notice given Vaggie's more prominent pink sclera, she does have a yellow-colored iris. This would serve as an early, subtle hint of her true Angelic heritage.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: She hates that [[TheHedonist Angel Dust]] isn't taking the hotel's mission seriously, she does not think that working with [[TheDreaded Alastor the Radio Demon]] is a good idea and is very reluctant to allow Sir Pentious to become a guest of the hotel after he's outed as TheMole. But they (and everyone else) have to work together if they're going to make things a success. When Adam plans to attack the Hotel next Exorcism, Vaggie gives them the okay to leave and save themselves, they all decide to stay and fight.
* ThisIsGonnaSuck: Her reaction to when Charlie starts singing her pitch for the Happy Hotel, accompanied by a FacePalm and an "Oh, no."
* TokenGoodTeammate: As stated in the below trope (TokenHeroicOrc), Vaggie was this to her fellow Exorcists before being abandoned. She was caught sparing a Sinner child by Lute, resulting in her mutilation and [[FallenAngel fall]], with it hinted that Vaggie was the first Exorcist to spare a Sinner. And a subtle notice shows that unlike her former teammates who sadistically smiled at the annual exterminations, Vaggie sported a serious frown, implying she didn't see any sick enjoyment from murdering Sinner but as a duty. And in the present day, it shown that ''none'' of her former Exorcist sisters have fond memories of her, even being ''excited'' at the prospect of murdering her. Given all this, it's implied that Vaggie may have been the sole, good-hearted Exorcist, with her heroic side being fully brought out upon her fall.
* TokenHeroicOrc: DoubleSubvertedTrope. Initially she seems to be one of the ''only'' good-hearted Sinners, with it not even being clear ''why'' someone like her is even in Hell to begin with. The initial subversion comes from the fact she's ''not'' a Sinner, she's an ''Angel''. More specifically, she's a FallenAngel, the second subversion coming from the fact she's a former Exorcist but was mutilated and left for dead by Adam after she showed a demon child mercy, making her at the time the only good-hearted Exorcist amidst a legion of sadistic butchers.
* TwitchyEye: She gets so pissed at Angel Dust in the pilot that her eye starts twitching.
* TwoferTokenMinority: She's both Latina and a lesbian in a relationship with Charlie. This later becomes a ''Three''fer when she's revealed to be a former Exorcist, making her an angel working in a hotel populated by demons and Sinners.
* UndyingLoyalty: Of the entire Hotel residents, Vaggie is the one who actively and steadfastly helps in ensuring Charlie's plan to redeem sinners come true. Vaggie has essentially dedicated her whole life to doing whatever she can to make Charlie safe and happy, as repayment for seeing worth in Vaggie at her lowest point after she was abandoned by Heaven.
* UnequalPairing: {{Subverted|Trope}}, with her relationship with Charlie. Charlie is Princess of Hell, daughter of Lucifer (''the'' FallenAngel and the undisputed King of Hell), while Vaggie at first appears to just be a common sinner. But then the reveal of her true nature as a FallenAngel herself flips this, as it puts them both on more equal footing.
* UnfortunateNames: Her nickname and real name unfortunately brings to mind "vagina", a fact Angel lampshaded in the prequel comic and first episode. It's later revealed that [[GiverOfLameNames Adam]] gave it to her because she was so good at killing demons, comparing her to "the greatest thing ever". He even pronounces it with a ''soft'' "g".
* UnkemptBeauty: Not in the present but during her first meeting with Charlie. Vaggie was left disheveled, and eye gouged out by her former superiors, and near death before being found and tended to by her future girlfriend. And even with her outward appearance being messy and scarred, one grateful smile at Charlie's act of kindness left the Princess of Hell romantically flustered.
* ViolentlyProtectiveGirlfriend: In general, just do ''not'' think of harming, insulting, or threatening Charlie when Vaggie is present.
** Her response to when the camera demon called Charlie a "stupid bitch"? Slug him in the face.
** When [[TheDreaded Alastor]] shows up at the hotel, Vaggie immediately ''threatens him with a spear'' to protect Charlie.
** Vaggie immediately brandishes a spear during Niffty's introduction when the tiny demon suddenly lifts Charlie off the ground. When Niffty puts her girlfriend down again, Vaggie lowers the spear as well.
** After seeing Charlie [[DealWithTheDevil striking a deal]] with Alastor, Vaggie immediately readies her blade to kill or harm him. She only stops because Charlie intervenes.
* WalkingSpoiler: It's difficult to talk about Vaggie's role in Season 1 without mentioning that she's not a mere sinner, but rather a FallenAngel who was left for dead by Adam and Lute.
* WeaponSpecialization: She's proficient in fighting with spears, as that's the weapon she was taught to use when she was trained as an exterminator.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Inverted. Vaggie has white hair and while she does come off as grumpy, she's one of the most decent citizens of Hell. Plus, she fully supports Charlie's idea of redeeming the demons, even if she personally has some doubts. With the reveal that she's actually a former Exorcist, this trope is still in play as she spared a demon child during an extermination.
* WingdingEyes: She gets skulls in her pupils after Angel smugly reminds her that she can't kill him in Hell.
* WingedHumanoid: DoubleSubverted. As a former Exorcist, she once had feathery Angel wings, but they were torn off by Lute after she spared a Sinner child. She eventually gains a new set of wings.
* WouldntHurtAChild: The "crime" that got her expelled from the Exorcists and left for dead on the streets of Hell? Sparing a demon child.
* XMarksTheHero: She has a large "X" on the eyepatch covering her missing eye and is one of the central characters in the show. She also serves as the ''only'' good member of the Exorcists, refusing to kill a demon child during the Extermination and later devoting herself to helping Charlie's dream of redeeming sinners.
* YouCantGoHomeAgain: Vaggie is originally from Heaven and was an Exorcist Angel. However, when she spared a demon child, Lute gouged her eye and tore off her wings, leaving the former incapable of returning home. She doesn’t mind it, though, since she manages to make a life for herself in Hell, make some loyal friends along the way, and is in a happy relationship with her girlfriend, Charlie.
* YouHaveGotToBeKiddingMe: Her reaction in "Hello Rosie" to the fact that [[TakesOneToKillOne angelic steel is the key to harming Exorcists]] has shades of this, asking how no one else has figured it out before.

!!Alastor
Once a southern radio host and serial killer, Alastor is an enigmatic, infamously powerful Overlord known as the "Radio Demon" among other demons. He takes an interest in Charlie after seeing her on the news and offers to help her with her hotel, [[NotInThisForYourRevolution not because he believes in the cause]], but because of the entertainment value he sees in the patrons' repeated failure. He serves as the hotel's main investor, facility manager, and biggest source of defense and security. When not doing his multiple roles at the hotel, Alastor also runs his radio show on the side.

An energetic, obsessively neat cockroach-like cyclops demon. She is an acquaintance of Alastor's that he brings on to be the cleaning lady and cook at the Hazbin Hotel.
----
* AccidentalHero: [[spoiler:She deals the killing blow to Adam in the final battle, and all she was doing was stabbing any angel she could find.]]
* AffablyEvil: While she's normally very friendly and helpful, she's also working for one of the most feared overlords in Hell, and there’s a definite psychopathic side to her personality. It would be safe to say that Niffty is too unhinged to be properly evil because her disturbed mindset leaves her lacking much of a capacity for maliciousness. Even when slaughtering mother bugs in front of their offsprings her sadism is in service to the goal of cleaning the hotel before anything else. However, when something sets off her psychotic tendencies, she is extremely dangerous and utterly amoral willing to hurt anyone for any reason that makes sense in her distorted mind.
* AffectionateNickname: Husk and Angel call her "Niff."
* AggressiveSubmissive: [[ZigZaggingTrope Zigzagged]]. Despite her interest in [[AllGirlsWantBadBoys bad boys]] and admission to liking being forced, the fact that she shows up in a dominatrix outfit looking to "punish" said bad boys implies she's just as interested in being dominant as well.
* AllGirlsWantBadBoys: Niffty has a preference for "bad boys".
** It's the apparent reason for her friendship with Alastor and she's giddy at the prospect of meeting Lucifer because he's "the ultimate bad boy." She even formed a crush on Sir Pentious during his time as a [[IneffectualSympatheticVillain supervillain wannabe]], and initially dislikes him after his HeelFaceTurn because he isn't evil enough for her anymore.
--->'''Niffty:''' I hated that song! Why are you so lame? ''[[LittleGirlsKickShins (kicks Sir Pentious)]]'' Not a bad boy!
** PlayedForDrama in "Welcome to Heaven" where a drunken Niffty tries to flirt with ''Valentino'' [[spoiler:prompting Angel Dust to step in and save her before he can get his hooks into her]]. She does manage to rip off a piece of his fur for her "collection."
* AnimalMotifs: Cockroaches, which amazingly enough detest dirt in real life, to such extent that they're considered the neat freaks of the insect world. She scuttles around like a cockroach and has the incredible resilience of one, [[spoiler:shrugging off a direct blast of holy light like it's nothing.]]
* ArtEvolution: In the pilot, Niffty has pale yellow skin and the ends of her hair are a messy fringe. In the series, she has stark white skin[[note]]presumably to avoid UnfortunateImplications as WordOfGod confirms her to be of Japanese descent[[/note]] and her hair is neater, presumably for ease of animation.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Her way of killing bugs involves chasing them down and stabbing them individually with a giant sewing needle. However, it's not very efficient and leaves punctures in the floor.
* AxCrazy: Niffty sure is cute, but she is so psychotic, deranged, and obsessed with violence that she probably gives Alastor a run for his money. [[spoiler:She finishes off Adam by stabbing him in the back, then repeats it dozens of times while laughing like a maniac.]]
-->'''Niffty:''' Stab, stab, STAB! HAHAHAHAHAHA! WAHAHAHAHAHA! BLOOD! HAHAHAHA!
* BadGuysDoTheDirtyWork: [[spoiler:During the first season, Niffty stands out as being AxCrazy while the other Hotel residents undergo Character Development. Ultimately, Niffty is the one who kills Adam after he is spared by Charlie and Lucifer.]]
* BadPeopleAbuseAnimals: She claims to kill mother bugs in front of their children as a warning, which disturbs the rest of the Hotel.
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Despite her manic and childish personality, she is much more dangerous than she looks as she [[spoiler: stabs a beaten up Adam as he is having a VillainousBreakdown, which leads to his demise]].
* BloodIsTheNewBlack: [[spoiler:She's absolutely drenched in [[AlienBlood Exorcist blood]] by the end of the Extermination, though most of the blood comes from the already dead Exorcists whom she stabs in a murderous frenzy.]]
* BloodKnight: Niffty is disappointed when Charlie stops Vaggie from throwing her into a warzone alongside Angel and Sir Pentious, and promptly clambers over the wall herself to gleefully join in the combat. [[spoiler:She's also in a complete state of bloodlust for the majority of ''The Show Must Go On'', stabbing dead Exorcists in a frenzy before she accidentally stabs ''Adam'' and kills him.]]
* BlushSticker: She has two red circles on her cheeks, like Charlie.
* BusmansHoliday: In "Welcome to Heaven," when the hotel staff and guests are hanging out at a club, Niffty is still sweeping and cleaning, having gotten a broom from nowhere.
-->'''Sir Pentious:''' Niffty, dear, what are you doing?\
'''Niffty:''' I'm sweeping! Ugh, look how icky it is in here!\
'''Sir Pentious:''' That's because we're at a club, dear.\
'''Niffty:''' Oh! I thought the hotel looked different! ''(giggles)''
* CameraShy: In "Overture", when Vaggie attempts to film her for a commercial, she instantly freezes up into a ThousandYardStare. This happens again at the end of "The Show Must Go On" while being filmed by a news crew after [[spoiler:killing Adam]].
* CantHoldHisLiquor: Niffty taking a few shots of alcohol results in her becoming completely wasted. Justified, because her body is very small and skinny, as Angel points out.
* CasualKink: Niffty is very disturbingly open about how into [=BDSM=] and PowerDynamicsKink she is, to the distress and disgust of the rest of the Hotel's occupants.
* CharacterBlog: She has an official Instagram account called [[https://instagram.com/babyfeathrdustr/ babyfeathrdustr]]. Following the archival of the account of Octavia from ''WebAnimation/HelluvaBoss'' due to [[https://archive.is/X3Fp3/7f3917ed32b56714dc1cda75d38062f80b09846e.jpg certain]] [[https://archive.is/X3Fp3/580a84dd573b0c5990ca75b49d996de96426b44f.jpg matters]] however, her account was archived as well and pretty much retired.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In the pilot Niffty is quickly shown to be vocal about her StayInTheKitchen views for her limited screen time but come the series proper she's more simply manic and deranged as opposed to having DeliberateValuesDissonance.
* CharacterTics:
** Niffty gets black veins in her eye whenever she's feeling crazy, which is often.
** She also makes a scuttling sound when she runs, like an insect.
* CollectorOfTheStrange: Quite possibly combined with CreepySouvenir, in "Welcome to Heaven" Niffty rips off a piece of Valentino's fur collar, which is a part of him, for her collection. Her performing roach puppet shows and having made a crown out of roaches in "The Show Must Go On" also heavily implies that she collects insects that she has exterminated and then [[DesecratingTheDead uses the remains for handicrafts]].
* CostumeEvolution: In the pilot, Niffty wears a white shirt, neckerchief, and 1950s-style poodle skirt. In the series, she wears a maid's dress and apron.
* TheCutie: She's small and incredibly cute-looking for a demon.
* CuteAndPsycho: She's tiny, bubbly, and pretty bonkers. Charlie is 80 percent certain that she's harmless.
* {{Cyclops}}: She only has one huge eye.
* DeliberateValuesDissonance: She died in the 1950s as indicated by her attire and confirmed by Viv in [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=09-ribPwlAQ&t=1782 a livestream]], and she seems to still have a very fifties understanding of gender, i.e. thinking that women are natural house-keepers.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: [[spoiler:She's the one who deals the finishing blow to Adam, a VERY high-ranking ''angel'', while being a relatively normal Sinner from Hell. Granted, [[WorfHadTheFlu he was weakened from being hurt by Charlie and Lucifer]].]]
* DramaticIrony: PlayedForLaughs. She's dismayed that there are only women at the hotel when she arrives, mistaking the effeminate-looking Angel Dust for a woman.
* DubPersonalityChange: Niffty loves killing mother bugs in front of their offspring to warn the latter, which is ''very'' disturbing, as the rest of the cast will agree. However, in the Italian dub, this aspect of her is somehow '''even more horrifying''' as she instead uses the verb "seviziare"; this term can either mean she tortures the mother bugs or, the more common use of the verb, she '''[[BestialityIsDepraved rapes]]''' them...maybe both. We can only hope it's [[ALighterShadeOfBlack just torture]].
* EarlyBirdCameo: Prior to her introduction, Niffty can be seen among the falling silhouetted demons in "I'm Always Chasing Rainbows". She also appears during Vaggie's exposition about Alastor, silluetted behind him together with Husk.
* EveryonesBabySister: She's not the ''youngest'' of the residents/staff at the Hotel, that would be Vaggie, but she certainly ''acts'' like the youngest. And while her behavior ''may'' creep out the others at times, they all treat Niffty as if she was their little sister, Charlie stopping Vaggie from throwing her into a warzone in "Scrambled Eggs" and Sir Pentious saving her from falling debris in "Dad Beat Dad". "Welcome to Heaven" in particular would demonstrate her being this to Angel, as his unknowing SecretTestOfCharacter from Heaven largely revolves around his care for and being protective of Niffty, looking after her when she gets drunk and starts cleaning things rigorously, cheering her up when he accidentally makes her cry, and [[spoiler:the thing that gets him to finally stand up to Valentino being Val setting his sights on her and refusing to let him touch her.]]
* FemaleMisogynist: Niffty seems to think that women should be good at cleaning. It's justified and downplayed as she died in the 1950s (a decade infamous for StayInTheKitchen views). However, this trait vanishes in the series proper.
* {{Foil}}: Practically the opposite of Husk in every way that matters. Niffty died as a young woman, Husk died as an old man. Niffty looks like a (tiny) human, Husk looks like a mixture of a cat and a bird. Niffty is always cheerful (but also AxCrazy), while Husk is always grumpy (but has a softer side). Niffty is treated like a little sister by the residents of the hotel and needs to be looked after, Husk is the hotel's TeamDad and "wise old bartender" who listens to everyone's problems and tries to keep Angel Dust on his good behavior streak. And while Alastor likes Niffty so much that he lets her climb on him, he finds Husk's suffering to be entertaining [[spoiler:and threatens to broadcast his screams over the radio when the cat mentions Alastor's own soul being on a leash]].
* FunSize: Niffty is so tiny that the other hotel staff and residents can pick up and carry her with ease. Her very first appearance involves Alastor scooping her out of the fireplace and holding her by the back of her shirt.
* GenkiGirl: She's very hyperactive and zips around the hotel at incredible speed.
* GigglingVillain: Unsurprisingly, since she's a cute, tiny {{Yandere}}.
* GirlWithPsychoWeapon: Niffty is prone to pulling giant sewing needles and kitchen knives out of thin air to stab insects... or anything else that irritates her.
* GleefulAndGrumpyPairing: The Gleeful GenkiGirl to Husk's Grumpy [[TheBartender Bartender]].
* GuyOnGuyIsHot: Well... maybe. She's the only one in the Hotel who actually ''likes'' Angel's gay porno in "Masquerade", though it's hard to tell if that's because she believes this trope or if it's just another case of her being a plain vanilla LovableSexManiac.
* HartmanHips: Niffty has a skinny upper body but wide hips--as seen when she dresses in bondage gear.
* HeroicComedicSociopath: She is constantly shown to take sadistic pleasure in killing, [[spoiler:and she's the one who deals the finishing blow to Adam which gets her hailed as a hero.]]
* HorrifyingTheHorror: Everyone in the setting is already a demon from Hell or a sinner who was brought there, but everyone in the cast seems to ''also'' be afraid of how much of a NightmareFetishist Niffty is. Even Alastor, who isn't scared of her, is still quite perplexed and wonders what the fuck is happening in this little cyclops' mind. [[spoiler:Even the Vees are shown to be scared of her as they watch with shocked expressions when she killed Adam by stabbing him repeatedly.]]
* HugeGuyTinyGirl: Niffty is easily the smallest character in the cast and as such all the men at the hotel tower over her.
* ImAHumanitarian: [[spoiler:By the end of the fight with the Exorcists, her teeth are stained with angel blood, implying she was snacking on them during the battle.]]
* InnocentlyInsensitive: She repeatedly mistakes Angel Dust for a girl, though it doesn't seem to bother him much. She also believes in some very old-fashioned stereotypes about gender.
* InsectoidAliens: More in spirit than anything, since she's a demon -- [[invoked]]WordOfGod notes that Niffty's design is supposed to invoke both a bug and an alien from a [=1950s=] B-movie.
* {{Leitmotif}}: A whimsical yet chaotic fast tune that plays whenever the screentime is dedicated towards her.
* LiteralMinded: [[spoiler:While preparing for the battle against the exorcists]], Charlie hands her an angelic knife and tells her to stab any angel she sees. Niffty takes this to mean she should stab Angel Dust. Charlie quickly clears up the confusion before she can act on it.
* LittleGirlsKickShins: Though she's around 22 years old, she looks like a little girl, and when Sir Pentious commits to his HeelFaceTurn by performing a sappy song with Charlie, Niffty shows her displeasure that he's no longer a "bad boy" by kicking his tail.
* LovableSexManiac: Almost as much as Angel. She [[TooMuchInformation unhesitatingly admits]] that she "likes being forced" to do things, gleefully falls for Sir Pentious when she sees he's a "bad boy" and demands that he never leave her, she gets ''really'' into one of Angel's porn videos, Husk implies that Niffty's drunken confessions are so filthy that [[EveryoneHasStandards he doesn't even want to repeat them]] and when Angel tries to build trust among the others via a BDSM dungeon, she immediately dresses up in bondage gear and expresses a desire to "punish some naughty boys". She also implies that she [[TooKinkyToTorture gets turned on by pain]] a few times.
* MadeOfIron: She's the smallest member of the hotel staff, and yet tanks the impact from a flying chunk of wall just fine. [[spoiler:She even shrugs off getting blasted by holy light during the final battle, giving a thumbs-up to show she's OK.]]
* MarilynManeuver: She does this as Alastor magically transforms the staff and guest’s outfits for the hotel commercial.
* MaskOfSanity: Implied—in the pilot, Niffty is sweet and polite with only a few subtle hints at her true nature, such as smiling when Alastor curb-stomps Sir Pentious while everyone else looks on in StunnedSilence. By the time the hotel has been open for a week, she's no longer bothering to cover up that she's completely crazy, running around stabbing bugs with an oversized sewing needle and happily declaring that she kills mother bugs in front of their children as a warning to others.
* MeaningfulName: "Nifty" can mean skilled or stylish, and she's shown to be really efficient in cleaning.
* MiseryTrigger: Calling her a mess will cause her to burst into tears almost instantly.
* MoralityPet: To the entire hotel. She's the smallest and most vulnerable demon on the premises and has a remarkable talent for getting herself into trouble. It's a testament to the success of Charlie's project and the basic decency of her staff and guests that all of them, including the hedonistic Angel Dust, the cowardly Sir Pentious, and the jaded Husk, keep an eye out for her to make sure she stays safe from Hell's many perils. Even Alastor finds her charming and laughs with her when she gives him a crown of roaches.
* MotorMouth: She talks just as fast as she moves.
* MyNaymeIs: While her name is pronounced the same as the word "nifty", it's spelled with two F's.
* MysteriousPast: She's the only one of Alastor's major associates that we don't know the exact nature of behind their meeting and connection. He treats her more akin to a genuine friend like Mimzy or Rosie, suggesting she didn't [[spoiler:sell her soul to him]] like Husk, yet he brought her to the Hotel in a manner similar to how he conscripted Husk. And whereas Mimzy was someone he knew in life and Rosie is someone he has a shared interest in cannibalism with, he died roughly ''twenty years'' before Niffty did when she was only 22, and Alastor admits in "The Show Must Go On" that he ''doesn't'' understand her "twisted mind", making it unclear ''how'' he became so close to and fond of her.
* NeatFreak: She has quite the penchant for cleaning. It's to the point when Angel tells her to stop acting like a ''mess'' when she's drunk, she [[OcularGushers starts to cry]].
* NiceGirl: Unlike Husk, who treats everyone with surly indifference, Niffty cheerfully introduces herself to the main trio and politely apologizes if her old-fashioned understanding of gender roles offended them.
* NightmareFetishist: Niffty grins gleefully whenever Alastor shows off his powers. She even smiles after he finishes beating up Sir Pentious, while everyone else is standing in StunnedSilence.
* NightmareFuelStationAttendant: Niffty casually does things that make her look like a homicidal lunatic, such as gleefully confessing during the trust exercise she kills mother bugs in front of their brood to "send a message." It's worth noting nobody wanted to catch her trust fall after this, not even Charlie, though she didn't mind because she shouts "Yay! Pain!"
* NoodleIncident: She somehow managed to cause a toilet clog at the Hotel that Alastor had to clear... by getting ''herself'' stuck in the drain.
-->'''Alastor:''' ''Remember when I fixed that clog today?''\
'''Niffty:''' ''I was stuck! Thank you, sir!''
* NoSenseOfPersonalSpace: She pulls on the front of Vaggie's shirt while asking where her tits are.
* OlderThanTheyLook: Although she kinda looks like a little girl, she was alive during the 1950s, as confirmed by Viv in [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=09-ribPwlAQ&t=1782 a livestream]], and it was later clarified in [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=fvEU9NOokPM&t=13420 a Q&A]] that she’s around 22 years old.
* OOCIsSeriousBusiness: She's generally perky and comical, and even in more somber situations with the rest of the group, she doesn't tend to come off as particularly self-aware. Thus, it really drives the point across how crushing [[spoiler:Sir Pentious' HeroicSacrifice]] is when even ''she'' is simply standing with a shocked solemn expression.
* PerkyFemaleMinion: She serves as Alastor's energetic helper, a role she seems to very much enjoy.
* PerpetualSmiler: She's either smiling or grinning most of the time, which is likely why Alastor likes her.
* PintsizedPowerhouse: Effortlessly picks up Charlie, despite being half her size. Plus, she has the resilience to not get crushed by a huge wooden door.
* PluckyComicRelief: The show's tone skews somewhat comedically either way, with most characters having some number of humorous traits. Niffty, however, appears to have ''nothing but'' comedic traits, and even when she appears in a more serious scene, she [[CaptainOblivious seems barely aware of it]].
* PsychoKnifeNut: Give her an edged weapon, and things get extremely messy extremely fast. [[spoiler:She spends the entire Exorcist invasion merrily ventilating downed angels' torsos with a Heaven-forged dagger and doesn't even seem to notice when her latest victim turns out to be ''Adam himself''.]]
* PsychopathicWomanchild: She has a very childlike demeanor despite being a grown woman and even cries like a baby in Episode 6. She is also a hyperactive AxCrazy sadomasochist.
* PunnyName: Her name is pronounced "Nifty", and she is introduced by Alastor who does so by saying "[[WhosOnFirst This little darling here is Niffty]]."
* RapidFireNo: She cheerfully chimes "Nope! Nope! Nope! Nope!" as she buzzes around the hotel, cleaning up all the dirt and bugs she finds.
* SpannerInTheWorks: [[spoiler:While Sir Pentious is this trope to the Exorcists, Niffty is this trope to the Extermination order in general. When Charlie tries to make her case in Heaven, all she has is unsubstantial footage of Angel Dust drinking in a nightclub. Until Niffty gets drunk, setting off Angel's BigBrotherInstinct and leading him to very quickly tick off all three quotas Adam made up to get into Heaven, the ensuing argument exposing that no one ''knows'' how to get into Heaven, but also neither did the rest of Heaven know about the Exterminations, exposing Sera and Adam to their public. When even this and Lucifer's intervention fails to stop the Extermination, Niffty unwittingly stabs and kills Adam, causing the leaderless Exorcists to retreat.]]
* StockSoundEffect: The "squee" sound heard in her introduction will be familiar to fans of ''WesternAnimation/MyLittlePonyFriendshipIsMagic.''
* SurprisinglyCreepyMoment: She gets a few moments of this, crushing and impaling the bugs she catches and getting a close-up of [[MadEye her eye darting erratically around the room]].
-->'''Niffty:''' [[WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises It's been a while since I've made]] ''[[CuteAndPsycho new friends!]]''
* TeamChef: Along with being the cleaning lady, Alastor brings her on to be the hotel’s cook.
* ThousandYardStare: In the first episode, when Vaggie tries to film her for the Hazbin Hotel's commercial, Niffty simply stares into the camera with a terrified expression. [[spoiler:She also does the same stare at the end of the Season 1 finale while being interviewed by the press.]] Might also double as TraumaButton, since she doesn't seem to be aware that she's doing it.
* TooKinkyToTorture: When everyone backs away from her during a trust fall, causing her to face plant, she gets back up and keeps doing it because she likes the pain. She also jumps into the warzone area herself per Vaggie's suggestion despite Charlie trying to stop her.
* TooMuchInformation: When she comments that she "likes being forced" to do Alastor's bidding, Husk grumbles that she should "probably keep that to herself". And when Husk talks about [[InVinoVeritas all the things the residents of the Hotel have told him at the bar]], when he gets to Niffty, he can't even ''[[YouDoNotWantToKnow bring himself]]'' to repeat the stuff she told him.
* VillainousFriendship: Appears to be friends with Alastor despite him summoning her on a whim, compared to Husk being quite annoyed by the same. Her AxCrazy PerpetualSmiler attitude is likely why they both connect, and for his part Niffty is the only person Alastor allows to touch him unprompted, with her frequently clambering all over him.
* VocalEvolution: Her voice is higher in the series than the pilot.
* WideEyesAndShrunkenIrises: While meeting Charlie, Vaggie and Angel Dust in the pilot, her single pupil contracts to a tiny dot when she says, "It's been a while since I made new ''friends!"''
* {{Yandere}}: Implied by this line to Sir Pentious:
-->'''Niffty:''' The bad boy is back. ''[jumps on Sir Pentious]'' '''''NEVER LEAVE ME AGAIN.'''''\
'''Charlie:''' [[FalseReassurance We're about 80% sure she's harmless.]]

A foul-mouthed, alcoholic sphinx-like demon with a grim outlook on things. Alastor brings him on to be the front desk clerk and bartender at the Hazbin Hotel.
----
* AccentAdaptation: Inverted in the Latin American Spanish dub, done in Chile. In stark contrast with the rest with the cast, who speaks using Mexican accents, Husk speak with his voice actor's Chilean accent instead, possibly to emphasize his grumpy personality with the rest of the cast.
* AccessoryWearingCartoonAnimal: In the pilot design, Husk only wore a hat and bowtie. However, the main series design gives him pants.
* AffablyEvil: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. He's a JerkWithAHeartOfGold at worst, being notably irritable at most times, but he's still willing to lend an ear as per his job as TheBartender, and is loyal to the rest of the hotel above all. Becomes more noticeable with the reveal he's [[spoiler:a former Overlord, having owned plenty of souls himself until he gambled them all away and sold his own to Alastor.]]
* AffectionateNickname: Alastor and Mimzy call him "Husker", although Husk doesn't seem to like either of them very much. In Alastor's case, [[spoiler:being the one responsible for taking away his Overlord status after Husk had gambled away too much, it's understandable.]]
* TheAlcoholic: He drinks a lot of cheap booze and tells Angel Dust that he can't [[DrowningMySorrows drown himself in alcohol]] because he's learned that doesn't work from experience. Fittingly, Alastor makes him the bartender.
* AlmightyJanitor: Husk is ostensibly ''just'' TheBartender for the Hazbin Hotel after being effectively conscripted by Alastor in the Pilot and doesn't seem that much more powerful than the average Sinner as a result. He's a [[spoiler:former Overlord]] though and has both the skill and experience befitting someone of that position to back it up, as demonstrated when he saved Angel from a group of thugs trying to date-rape him. The only reason he's stuck following Alastor is because [[spoiler:[[HowTheMightyHaveFallen he sold his soul]] to the Radio Demon to sate his gambling addiction.]]
* AntiHero: He's a grumpy, abrasive cynic and [[spoiler:he was an Overlord, a position that requires ruthlessness and evil]]. However, he's actually quite caring and empathetic beneath all his pessimism and is always willing to lend an ear to someone's problems, however reluctantly.
* BadassInANiceSuit: In a flashback to his days as [[spoiler:an Overlord, one of the Pride Ring's upper-class]], he's shown wearing a snazzy business suit. Despite having been [[spoiler:stripped of his power and authority]] by Alastor, he's still strong enough to take down a group of literal loansharks who try to kill him for stopping them from raping Angel.
* BaritoneOfStrength: Has a deep, booming voice courtesy of Creator/KeithDavid, and [[spoiler:he used to possess quite the demonic power as an Overlord. Even as a mere bartender under Alastor's employ now, he's powerful enough to be able to weaponize regular playing cards with enough strength and accuracy to ''split metal apart''.]]
* TheBartender: In addition to manning the front desk, he's the Hotel's bartender, and is often there to listen to the patrons and staff pour their hearts out when [[INeedAFreakingDrink they need a freaking drink]] after a long day's work or to cope with trauma. This allows him to know most of the main cast’s secrets and true personalities, except for his master Alastor of course.
* BigOlEyebrows: He has ''very'' long and feathery eyebrows.
* BirdsOfAFeather: In "Masquerade", he bonds with Angel over the fact that [[spoiler:both of them lost everything by making deals with Overlords]].
* BrutalHonesty: Husk is not one to lie to people and is perfectly willing to lay out the harshest of truths in order to back up whatever point he has to make. That being said, Husk never says hard truths without purpose - he points out that Angel Dust is a loser and an unhappy mess, but only does so to help him realise that not accepting himself will prevent him from improving and accepting it will allow him to grow and actually have a chance at getting better.
* BullyingADragon: Bluntly telling [[TheDreaded Alastor]] that [[spoiler:he isn't as powerful as he claims to be because his soul is bound with someone else's too is not the wisest idea he's had so far, that's for sure.]]
-->'''Husk:''' [[spoiler:''Big talk'' for someone who's ''also'' on a leash.]]
* CantLiveWithThemCantLiveWithoutThem: [[spoiler:When Vaggie tells them that they can either stay or book it before Heaven's Exorcists come to the hotel and kill everyone there, he and the rest remain behind, saying that he's not willing to make new drinking buddies.]]
* CatFolk: He's a sphinx-like demon with feathered wings.
* CatsAreSnarkers: Cat-demon Husk rarely has a speaking moment where he's not making some kind of disgruntled crack at somebody else's expense, even if it's an InsultOfEndearment.
* CharacterBlog: He has an official Instagram account called [[https://instagram.com/bar_cat75/ bar_cat75]]. Following the archival of the account of Octavia from ''WebAnimation/HelluvaBoss'' due to [[https://archive.is/X3Fp3/7f3917ed32b56714dc1cda75d38062f80b09846e.jpg certain]] [[https://archive.is/X3Fp3/580a84dd573b0c5990ca75b49d996de96426b44f.jpg matters]] however, his account was archived as well and pretty much retired.
* CharacterDevelopment: In the beginning, Husk made it no secret that he was forced to stay at the Hotel because of his ties to Alastor and would gladly get as far away as he could if able to. Bonding with other residents helps to slowly crack his grouchy, tough shell to the point he refers to them as his "[[TrueCompanions drinking buddies]]". Tying in with that, he goes from being a PerpetualFrowner to something along the lines of TheStoic who cracks more [[WhenHeSmiles warm and genuine smiles]].
* CharacterSong: ''Royal Flush'', written by Silva Hound (the same artist behind ''Addict'') and performed by Husk's voice actor, Mick Lauer, and Music/JonathanYoung.
* CharacterizationMarchesOn: In the Pilot, he was a ''lot'' grumpier than he is in the show proper, losing his temper at Alastor and not hesitating to show his disinterest in anything going on as long as it doesn't concern him. In the series, it's established he's still a jerk, but it's evident he cares, and his temper isn't as volatile and often warranted.
* ClothingAppendage: The way his fur is patterned makes it look like he's wearing a suit. [[spoiler:He actually ''did'' wear a suit during his old days as a powerful overlord.]]
* ClusterFBomb: He's already a SirSwearsALot, but he's very fond of dropping the F-bomb.
-->'''Husk:''' You thought it would be some kind of big fucking riot just to pull me outta nowhere? ''You think I'm some kind of fucking clown?''
* ComicallySmallBribe: How Alastor gets him to work for the hotel, conjuring a bottle of cheap alcohol for him to indulge in.
-->'''Husk:''' What, you think you can buy me with a wink and some cheap booze? ''[beat]'' Well, you can!
* CommonalityConnection: [[spoiler:The entire premise of the song ''Loser, Baby'' in episode 4. When Angel Dust finally opens up a little about how miserable he is, Husk admits to him (in song) that he's in a similar bind, being a former Overlord who became indebted to Alastor.]]
* TheConfidant: His role as TheBartender at the Hotel inevitably turned him into this, though he's not shy in airing everyone's dirty laundry when his buttons are pushed. As he puts it, a bartender is usually someone ''anyone'' is fine talking about their problems to. [[spoiler: Episode 5 shows that his work for Alastor means he knows much more about him than basically anyone -- possibly including where Alastor's been for the past seven years, and ''definitely'' including the fact that Alastor himself is on someone else's leash.]]
* TheCynic: Long story short, this guy has a ''seriously'' negative view of everyone and everything. [[spoiler:Your every endeavor being rendered AllForNothing in a bad gamble with the Radio Demon does that to you.]]
* DealWithTheDevil: [[spoiler:Husk was once an Overlord, but out of desperation to keep his power, he made a deal with Alastor, which led to him losing everything and being eternally bound to the Radio Demon's will]].
* DeathDealer: He can throw cards with enough force and accuracy to kill people, along with explosive dice.
* DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu: Downplayed, but while Alastor is considered TheDreaded in Hell, Husk doesn't hesitate to yell at, berate, point or even ''shove'' him. [[spoiler:Being a former Overlord himself probably helps]].
* DoNotTauntCthulhu: Despite the above, it should be noted that Alastor '''lets''' Husk get away with [[DidYouJustFlipOffCthulhu flipping him off]]. [[spoiler: The moment Husk brings up the fact that Alastor's own soul belongs to someone else within earshot of the Radio Demon, Alastor can barely restrain himself to simply warning Husk of the fate he will bestow on the former Overlord should he ever bring it up again.]]
* DrowningMySorrows: [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=MqGEHNy3Wxo&t=1215 A]] [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=MqGEHNy3Wxo&t=9575 livestream]] reveals that the reason Husk is an alcoholic is that he's very deeply emotionally troubled.
* DrunkenGlow: Husk has a perpetual gray spot around the bridge of his nose to indicate his heavy drinking.
* EarlyBirdCameo: He actually appears a couple of times during Vaggie's exposition about Alastor. The first time is when Alastor is shown alongside the other Overlords of Hell, [[spoiler:which makes sense considering that he used to be one himself before selling his soul to Alastor to keep his power]]. Husk along with Niffty [[FreezeFrameBonus can be seen]] as silhouettes behind Alastor. The second time is in one of the later stylized images shown however it's when Vaggie's on screen so he's mostly obscured.
* EveryoneHasStandards: He's grouchy on the best of days, and often has to be coerced into doing anything for the Hotel or its staff, including running the Hotel bar. But he takes his job as a bartender seriously, and should he catch any demon trying to spike any alcohol being served, even if it's not on Hotel grounds, he will not hesitate to call them out and give them one hell of a [[NoHoldsBarredBeatdown beating.]]
* EvilSoundsDeep: To the extent that he's evil; he's a demon, [[spoiler:a former Overlord in fact]], who is in debt to Alastor [[spoiler:after Alastor bought out his gambling debts]] and to go with his grumbling personality, Both Mick Lauer and Keith David give him a growly, irritable voice.
* EvilSoundsRaspy: Well formerly evil anyways as he's a [[spoiler:former Overlord]], nowadays, he's just a grumpy old bartender. Mick Lauer's voice for Husk in the pilot is very, ''very'' rough sounding. Averted with Creator/KeithDavid in the show proper, where his voice, while still irritable, is a lot smoother sounding due to being, well, Keith David.
* EvilVirtues: '''[[BrutalHonesty Sincerity.]]''' As a bitter cynic who's fully aware of how bad life can be, he doesn't mince words and is always direct about everything. And while he may take things too far, he’s not afraid to speak his mind and give you the truth, no matter how painful or unpleasant it may be to hear.
* {{Flight}}: According to Viv in [[https://youtube.com/watch?v=MqGEHNy3Wxo&t=4343 a livestream]], Husk can fly, but he doesn't do it often because he's very lazy. He finally does it in the season finale.
* {{Foil}}:
** To Cherri Bomb. Both of them are friends with Angel Dust, but while Cherri has been friends with Angel for a long time and is openly affectionate with him, Husk was formerly cold to Angel and only came to view him as a friend after Angel showed vulnerability and let his walls down around him. Like Cherri, Husk wants what's best for Angel, but unlike Cherri who thinks that feeding into Angel's addictive tendencies are the best way to treat his depression and that living up to the hotel's standards is only making his life more difficult, Husk encourages Angel to stick with the self-improvement he's learned from the hotel and not fall back into his old ways since Angel's trying to get into Heaven. "Welcome to Heaven" shows Angel doesn't necessarily have to pick one or the other, as he can still enjoy himself in moderation so long as he still prioritizes being a good person, Angel saying there's room for both Cherri and Husk as his friends.
** To Niffty, who he's pretty much the opposite of in every way. Husk died as an old man, Niffty died as a young woman. Husk looks like a mixture of a cat and a bird, while Niffty looks like a (tiny) human. Husk is always grumpy (but has a softer side), while Niffty is always cheerful (but also AxCrazy). Husk is the hotel's TeamDad and "wise old bartender" who listens to everyone's problems and tries to keep Angel Dust on his good behavior streak, while Niffty is treated like a little sister by the residents of the hotel and needs to be looked after. And while Alastor likes Niffty so much that he lets her climb on him, he finds Husk's suffering to be entertaining [[spoiler:and threatens to broadcast his screams over the radio when the cat mentions Alastor's own soul also being on a leash]].
* FoodAsBribe: Alastor persuades him to be the hotel's bartender with a bottle literally labelled "Cheap Booze".
* FunctionalAddict: He's a gambling addict, and he's very, very reliant on alcohol to get through things, but is still the second sanest member of the hotel after Vaggie, as well as being the most emotionally intelligent and having the most common sense.
* FurryReminder: At times Husk purrs or growls like a regular cat.
* TheGamblingAddict: [[spoiler:Even though Husk was once an Overlord, his proclivity toward gambling was eventually his undoing as it resulted in him losing his power and influence to Alastor, and it's implied he still gambles frequently to this day.]]
* GamblingRuinsLives: He's addicted to gambling much the same way Angel is addicted to drugs and sex. [[spoiler:He used to be an Overlord but gambled away his bound souls until he got desperate enough to sell his own soul to Alastor.]]
* GleefulAndGrumpyPairing: The Grumpy [[TheBartender Bartender]] to Niffty's Gleeful GenkiGirl.
* GotVolunteered: Alastor "calls in a few favors" to fill out the hotel staff, which includes teleporting Husk away from the middle of a poker game he was about to win. He's understandably not amused.
* HalfDressedCartoonAnimal: Husk's pilot design [[AccessoryWearingCartoonAnimal original had him naked with only a top hat and bowtie,]] but his main series design gives him pants.
* HatesBeingTouched: Implied. He's a lot more hostile towards Alastor and Angel after they touch him multiple times.
* HereWeGoAgain: When he sees just who has yanked him away from his card game, all he can do is exasperatedly ask Alastor what he wants with him ''this time''. [[spoiler:Seeing as Alastor is effectively a constant reminder of how his gambling ended up costing him his status as an Overlord, it's easy to understand why he'd be upset at having to bend to the Radio Demon's will.]]
* HiddenDepths:
** Behind his grumpy exterior, Husk is actually very patient, and it takes a lot to make him legitimately angry.
** [[spoiler:Despite his somewhat unintimidating appearance, Husk was once an Overlord of Hell himself, implying that before Alastor took everything from him, he had some pretty significant power]].
* HowTheMightyHaveFallen: [[spoiler:Husk was once an Overlord of Hell himself. In his desperation to keep his power, he made a deal with Alastor, which backfired horribly when Alastor stripped him of his power and trapped him in his servitude for all eternity]].
* IgnoreTheFanservice: For the first half of season 1, Husk has to contend with the voluptuous Angel Dust practically throwing himself at him at every concievable opportunity, and it quickly becomes clear that Husk is ''not'' interested in Angel's advances[[note]]despite being Pansexual[[/note]] because he can see how Angel's promiscuity is a mask for his deep-seated fear and self-hatred. Once they actually gain a better understanding of one another in "Masquerade", Husk stops rebuking Angel so harshly and they become close friends.
* InconvenientSummons: Gets warped to the hotel while setting down a winning poker hand. He’s understandably miffed about this.
* JerkassHasAPoint:
** Crass as he was in the pilot, Husk had every right to be pissed at Alastor for pulling him out of a poker game he was winning. Of course, he was winning because he was cheating, but neither he nor Alastor really care about that.
** While it was unnecessarily rude to bring up the Hotel residents' flaws, Husk is accurate about every one of them -- Charlie is desperate to help others but doesn't confront her own issues, Vaggie judges others because she hates herself, Sir Pentious is a lonely Sinner who watches people in their sleep, and Angel puts on an act that he's happy about his porn star job but is really miserable. (And he's probably right that we don't even want to know what Niffty's deal is too.)
** While his words were poorly timed, jabbing into Angel's BerserkButton after he'd just suffered a night of abuse from Valentino in "Masquerade", it's hard to deny that Husk is right to be frustrated with Angel's sexual harassment. He's cuttingly accurate when he points out how Angel's lewd and carefree behavior is all a self-destructive act that he hides behind to avoid his problems, and that nobody in the Hotel is particularly impressed with or taken by the front he puts up.
* JerkassToOne: {{Downplayed|Trope}}. He's always cynical and crass but is a JerkWithAHeartOfGold overall. With Angel however, he tends to be a lot more irritable. While it initially looks to be because of Angel constantly flirting with him, [[spoiler:it's because he hates how hard Angel acts out to hide how miserable he actually is, considering him a "phony" in a self-destructive spiral. It's only after the two of them have a heart to heart over their crappy lots in life that he {{subvert|edTrope}}s this and the two begin to bond, their duet "Loser, Baby" seeing them come to an understanding and become friends.]]
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: He's crass, cynical, and spouts swear words as often as he chugs booze... but he's got a softer side to him behind that, as seen by the fact he’s actually a pretty patient person who’s good with kids. Husk displays this quality in the series proper by [[spoiler:saving Angel's life before he could get roofied by another demon in a shady bar, and later consoling him [[YouAreNotAlone by letting on he's wrapped in an unfair deal too]].]]
* KnightInSourArmor: He develops into one over the first season. He's still a bitter pessimist, but he grows to care about the other staff and guests to the point of being willing to risk his life to help them.
* LazyBum: Downplayed. He does his job competently, but Husk is fairly blunt about the fact he's only participating in the group's shenanigans because he simply cannot be bothered to protest. He ''does'' join bonding activities but departs once it's no longer enjoyable for him showing he's more self-centered than anything. He grows out of this a bit as the series goes on and grows to care about the staff and guests.
* LiteralMetaphor: The bottle Alastor bribes him with is literally labeled "cheap booze".
* MeaningfulName: A "husk" means a shell or a protective outer cover. This fits his character well since he's shown to be a ''husk'' of a man. [[spoiler:More specifically, he's a former overlord who lost his power.]]
* MirrorCharacter: He eventually realizes he and Angel are this in "Masquerade", despite their differences. [[spoiler:They're both self-destructive addicts (Husk is a gambling addict, while Angel is addicted to sex and drugs) who sold their souls to an abusive Overlord. And both of them have descended even further into their addiction and adopted outwardly cynical, cruel personas as a coping mechanism.]]
* MixAndMatchCritters: He's an anthropomorphic cat with wings and feathers.
* NotSoDifferentRemark: The crux of episode 4 is how he commiserates with Angel because they're both losers, culminating in the 'Loser, Baby' song.
-->''You're a loser, baby\
A loser goddamn baby, you're a\
fucked up little whiny bitch\
You're a loser just like me!''
* OlderThanTheyLook: He's in his 60s or 70s, but it's not that easy to tell by his appearance and voice.
* OnlySaneByComparison: Husk has his own issues (which he freely admits to) and is generally apathetic to everything out of pessimism. He still has the most common sense out of the cast and he's the most emotionally intelligent and self-aware, even serving as an advisor to the others at the right times when he's not bitterly accepting his circumstances.
* OurSphinxesAreDifferent: He's a feline-human hybrid with feathered wings. His past with gambling is also reminiscent to the sphinx of Greek mythology engaging in riddles
* PerpetualFrowner: In stark contrast to [[PerpetualSmiler Alastor]], he always has a frown plastered on his face. In fact, when Alastor playfully makes him smile, he immediately defaults back to his irritated expression.
* PlayingCardMotifs: Appropriate for a gambler, he has various playing card suits patterned over parts of his body in his pilot design. However, his final design only features the heart symbols, and the wings are instead covered with dots, looking vaguely like a roulette wheel.
* QuakingWithFear: [[spoiler: Rather understandably, after Alastor nearly goes OneWingedAngel and threatens him with a FateWorseThanDeath for unknowingly pushing the Radio Demon's BerserkButton, Husk is left on the floor visibly shaking in fear.]]
* TheReliableOne: Episode 5 shows that despite his distaste for Alastor, Husk still cautions Alastor about how Mimzy only ever seeks him out when she's gotten into hot water and needs to use her friendship with Alastor as a get-out-of-jail-free card. He also points out how with Alastor's seven-year disappearance, people will likely be more brazen about attacking him.
* RhetoricalQuestionBlunder: Makes one when Alastor says he's volunteered Husk's services to the hotel:
-->'''Husk:''' You thought it would be some kind of big fucking riot just to pull me outta nowhere? ''You think I'm some kind of fucking clown?''\
'''Alastor:''' ''(Beat)'' *[[https://i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/original/001/620/834/636.png holding back a laugh]]* Mmmaybe.
* RichesToRags: [[spoiler:He was once an Overlord, but a gambling problem and a few bad hands left him indebted to Alastor.]]
* ScrewThisImOuttaHere: PlayedForLaughs in "Scrambled Eggs". When Vaggie decides to literally throw everyone into the middle of a turf war as part of her trust exercises, Husk takes the opportunity to slip out the door while Charlie and Vaggie are arguing rather than wait to get thrown himself. Later revealed to be subverted in a sense, as it's shown he actually did participate in that turf war. Presumably he was just preserving his dignity by joining it on his own terms.
* ShirtlessCaptives: Husk used to dress in a full suit [[spoiler:back when he was an overlord]], but now that Alastor has a claim on his soul, [[HalfDressedCartoonAnimal he only seems to wear his pants with suspenders]].
* SirSwearsALot: He's got one [[{{Pun}} hell]] of a potty mouth, with every other thing he says containing at least one swear word.
* SourOutsideSadInside: As Husk freely admits, he's nursing a lot of deep emotional wounds underneath all his snark and curmudgeonly personality.
* SourSupporter:
** He's already cynical and grumpy, and he wouldn’t be taking the job of bartender and hotel clerk if he didn't owe Alastor a favor, and if Al didn’t additionally bribe him with booze.
--->'''Charlie:''' Omigosh, welcome to the Happy Hotel! You are going to ''LOVE IT HERE!''\
'''Husk:''' I lost the ability to love years ago. (''[[TheAlcoholic chugs a bottle of booze]]'')
** The supporter part comes in when on one occasion he goes after Angel Dust at Charlie's prompting, meaning doing more than the bare minimum Alastor requires, and on another encourages Angel Dust not to fall back into drug use as an escape.
* TheSponsor: In fulfilling his role as TheConfidant, he unwittingly becomes this to Angel Dust. He intervenes when he starts self-destructing and gives him a PepTalkSong in "Masquerade" and would later talk him out of taking party drugs in "Welcome to Heaven".
-->'''Husk:''' Look, you want to fuck up all your progress? Be my guest. I just... [sigh] I just thought you were better than that.
* StraightGay: According to Faustisse, one of the artists for Hazbin who's a friend of Viv's, he is pansexual. However, he’s not portrayed as the usual stereotype of being pan, which is a LovableSexManiac that usually tries to hit on everyone. In fact, he rebuffs [[CampGay Angel's]] advances the moment they first meet.
* StuffBlowingUp: In a fight, he can toss explosive dice.
* SurroundedByIdiots: The hotel's owner is the only cheerful WideEyedIdealist demon in a world full of jackasses, one investor is a maniac who wants to get entertainment out of watching the chaos, the other investor is the owner's neglectful, depressed father (and also the literal ruler of Hell), the manager is bossy and threatens people with weapons at the slightest provocation, and the cleaning lady is a murderous psycho. Then there's him wanting [[CantStandThemCantLiveWithoutThem (almost)]] nothing to do with their escapades.
* TeamDad: A downplayed and ''far'' grouchier example than most, but as the bartender, Husk knows how to listen to people and knows exactly what kind of problems that all the residents of the hotel are going through, and while he would rather let them solve their own problems, he isn't exactly above giving them some pretty solid, if very brutally frank advice, especially to Angel Dust.
* {{Tsundere}}: How [[invoked]]WordOfGod described Husk's personality. Fitting, since he is a cat.
* VisualPun: His fur is patterned like a black and white suit, making him a literal tuxedo cat.
* VocalEvolution:
** Husk has a rough and gravelly voice in the pilot. In the series proper, it's deeper and smoother.
** Creator/KeithDavid's voice for Husk was initially much gruffer and gravellier, similar to Creator/MickLauer's performance. As the first season went on, it evolved to be much smoother and more similar to his ordinary voice.
* WalkingShirtlessScene: It's hard to tell due to his [[ClothingAppendage tuxedo-like fur pattern]], but Husk isn't wearing a shirt. This becomes a lot clearer when we see him in a flashback to his days as [[spoiler:an overlord]], where he used to wear a full suit.
* WickedHeartSymbol: Downplayed. Husk has hearts above his eyebrows, on his ears, and his nose is shaped like a heart. In his pilot design, they're also present on his wings.
* WingedHumanoid: He's an anthropomorphic cat with wings.
