!!Hayate Yagami — Mistress of the Night Sky, Living Lost Logia
!!!Voiced by: Creator/KanaUeda (Japanese), Creator/ShelbyLindley (English)
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/Hayates_9494.jpg]]
->''"This is the life that she, the first Reinforce, left me. I don't want anyone else in the world to be sad or have regrets like that. This is my purpose, the reason of life."''

Hayate starts out as a wheelchair-using ill girl with an apparent [[CosplayOtakuGirl cosplay fetish]]. The [[ArtifactOfDoom Book of Darkness]] grants her four servants, the Wolkenritter, whom she adopts as a family. Her kindness towards them turns the once-coldhearted group into nice, caring people. Unfortunately, a TreacherousAdvisor has it in for her, and when the Wolkenritter are killed in front of her, she [[BreakTheCutie snaps]]. The Book of Darkness takes control of her and attempts to destroy everything in sight. Luckily, she is able to regain control of herself and revive the Wolkenritter in time to help Team Nanoha neutralize the Book. After the death of Reinforce, she created her second Unison Device ''Reinforce Zwei'' and the Storage Device ''Tome of the Night Sky'', which is modeled after the original one. And Mariel Atenza also created her Armed Device ''Schwertkreuz'', which is modeled after the original ''Schwerzkreuz'' from the GrandFinale in ''A's''. In short, Hayate is one of few mages who uses multiple Devices.

Subsequently, she recovers from her paralysis and moves to Mid-Childa and joins the TSAB along with Nanoha and Fate, attaining a higher rank than either of them. In ''[=StrikerS=]'', Hayate founds her own section which investigates the Relic incidents, the Riot Force 6, which is part of the Ground Forces. This section includes not only the three Aces and the Wolkenritter, but also the Forwards. Ultimately, the Riot Force 6 solves the Jail Scaglietti (short: JS) Incident and destroys the Saint's Cradle with the help of the Dimensional Navy, and Commander Hayate Yagami is praised and now famous for this success. With its completed duty, Riot Force 6 is disbanded and Hayate transfers back from the Ground Forces to the Dimensional Navy. She also adopts Signum's new Unison Device, Agito, into her family.

Not long after, she convinces a randomly wandering girl, Miura Rinaldi, to try Strike Arts, who has become one of Zafira's strongest disciples. In ''[=ViVid=]'', Hayate, Reinforce Zwei and Agito create, after Lutecia Alpine and Einhart Stratos' request, the Hybrid-Intelligent Device Asteion for the latter, so Einhart can participate in the DSAA Inter-Middle Championship. Hayate and her family watch the matches of Miura, who defeats Nanoha and Fate's daughter, Vivio, in this tournament. Later, the Mistress of Night Sky helps the four descendants of the Ancient Belkan Era (Vivio[[note]]who is not actually a descendant but a clone of Sankt Kaiser Olivie Sägebrecht[[/note]], Einhart, Sieglinde Jeremiah and Victoria Dahlgrün) to learn more about their ancestors' past and visits with them and their friends the Infinity Library.

In ''Force'', Hayate founds a new section, Special Duty Section 6, which is investigating the Bible of the Silver Cross Incident, also known as the Eclipse Incident.
----
* AbledInTheAdaptation:
** Hayate was paraplegic as a child in the main continuity (though she later regained use of her legs). Her appearance in ''Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaINNOCENT'' is capable of walking from the very beginning.
** Also downplayed in the video games: In the primary continuity, Hayate spent at least a year in rehab after ''A's'' before she could walk again. In the AlternateContinuity of ''VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable'' games, however, she is able to walk right away, thanks to [[spoiler:Reinforce still being alive to give her full control of her body]].
* AdaptationalBadass:
** In ''VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable''. Compare the TV version, who claims she can't even beat [[WhiteMagicianGirl Caro]] in single combat to the ''Battle of Aces'' version who goes toe-to-toe with copies of [[BadassCrew her friends]] and kicks ten types of ass in her own story mode. Her final stage is a practice fight with the real Nanoha, which she wins, despite Nanoha's attempt to Starlight Breaker her. Justified since in that continuity Reinforce is teaching her to use the Tome more effectively. Hayate also mentions in the introduction to her story mode that Shamal, Reinforce, Nanoha and Fate have been training her.
** ''Reflection'' also shows her being significantly better in combat, able to take on both Iris and Dearche by herself.
* AdaptationalWealth: Downplayed. In the main continuity, she's financially supported by [[HonoraryUncle a friend of her late father]]. In the movie adaptation, she's simply living off the money from her parents' estate [[spoiler:since the subplot involving [[IllegalGuardian Graham's]] plans to sacrifice her to seal the Book of Darkness was AdaptedOut.]]
* AdoptivePeerParent: She's been calling the [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld several hundred year old]] Wolkenritter her children ever since she was ''nine''.
* AnimalMotifs: Her older self eventually becomes compared to a tanuki, or a racoon due to her mischievous nature. People still tease her for it later on, though as shown in the BunnyEarsLawyer entry below, [[AdamWesting she embraces it.]] Also, in some promotional artworks of ''[=ViVid=]'', whenever someone wears an animal costume, Hayate will always wear a tanuki costume, even when it doesn't fit to the costume theme.
* ApocalypseMaiden: Hayate's status as the master of the Book of Darkness meant that she was doomed to bring about the destruction of the planet. It's only thanks to a miracle that she was able to avert this fate.
* TheApprentice: Genya took on Hayate as an apprentice when she served under him in the 108th Battalion, teaching her most of the skills that she uses as an officer. As a result, [[RespectedByTheRespected she continues to view him with a great deal of respect even after she's long since outranked him]].
* TheAtoner: Is driven by a desire to make up for the Book of Darkness Incident.
* AuthorityEqualsAsskicking: Subverted. She has the most raw power out any living character by a wide margin, but (by her own admission) is near useless in an actual fight due to CripplingOverspecialization.
* AwesomeButImpractical: Her magic is incredibly powerful, even more so than Nanoha's, and she's the only known SS-ranked mage. Unfortunately, it requires a great deal of effort to aim and cast, meaning that unlike Nanoha and Fate, she isn't much good in a one-on-one fight.
* BadassBookworm: She likes reading books, is very intelligent, and her strength comes from her Tome of Night Sky.
* BadassLongCoat: In ''[=ViVid=] '' and ''Force''.
* BeamSpam: Her long ranged spell ''Brionac'' in ''A's Portable''.
** ''Hræsvelgr'' is a [[WaveMotionGun Wave Motion Spam]].
* BigBad: Subverted. She has no idea that her knights are extracting linker cores for her sake.
* BigGood: In ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'' and ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]'', she commands the heroes' section. Especially interesting, given her status as MoralityPet in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]''.
* BlondeBrunetteRedhead: The brunette to Fate's blonde and Nanoha's redhead.
* BreakTheCutie: Subverted. [[spoiler: The Liese Twins]] try to do this to invoke a TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening, but she's fine once she regains consciousness.
* BrokenTears: During her TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening.
* BunnyEarsLawyer: In addition to the perverted side, she also answers a videophone while wearing a tanuki mask in ''Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaVivid''. Einhart, who had pictured her as a powerful and imposing individual, is speechless.
* CastingAShadow: ''Diabolic Emission'', an area-of-effect spell that creates a black sphere of energy which collapses in on itself then expands outwards rapidly towards the enemy. The spell's area of effect is immensely large, yet no immediate buildings showed signs of damage.
* ChefOfIron: Hayate is probably the best cook in the entire series, and the strongest fighter in terms of raw power.
* ChildProdigy: Her ''INNOCENT'' counterpart is a nine-year-old university graduate.
* TheChosenOne: Unique as she wasn't chosen in the typical sense, but chosen by a magical tome through random chance. Another unique trait of her being the chosen one is that [[spoiler: she was chosen by another individual to be the last master of the book, as the circumstances of her life make her the ideal sacrificial lamb in order to seal the book, classified as a world destroying artifact that reconstructs itself when destroyed, permanently in a limbo dimension.]]
* CoatCape: How she wears her coat in ''[=ViVid=] and ''Force''.
* ColonelBadass: Her mage rank, SS, is the highest of any character in the series thus far. This is a composite rank though, so it's only an indication of mana capacity and raw destructive power.
* ColonyDrop: Hayate's chosen method of attack against [[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce the Huckebein family and their vessel]] was to summon a giant iceberg and then drop it on them. Alas!, the SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome was cut short by a DiabolusExMachina InTheBack.
* ComedicLolicon: She expressed a desire to grope Caro (who was ten years old at the time) in the first ''[=StrikerS=]'' Sound Stage. Note that she says this directly in front of Fate, who doesn't so much as make a comment on it.
* ContrastingSequelAntagonist: To Precia. They have similar backstories (loss of loved ones and terminal illness) but they went the complete opposite directions to deal with their pain. Precia [[LoveMakesYouEvil cursed the entire world for taking her daughter away from her]], spent twenty years trying to bring her back to life via cloning, and used the clone as nothing more than a tool because she wasn't a perfect copy. Hayate, on the other hand, [[StepfordSmiler never complained about the hand she'd been dealt]] and her reaction to gaining four loyal servants was to treat them as her family. Precia ordered Fate to collect the Jewel Seeds regardless of who was hurt while Hayate told the Wolkenritter not to collect Linker Cores specifically because people would get hurt (in fact, she was entirely unaware of what was going on until episode 9). Finally, Precia was the BigBad while Hayate only qualifies as an antagonist in the loosest sense due to her family's actions and would later go on to be the BigGood.
* CosplayOtakuGirl: She designs the mage armor outfits for her Knights. In fan works, this is subject to extreme CharacterExaggeration, to the point that it is the most prominent aspect of her character.
* CradleOfLoneliness: Does this with Schwertkreuz in the last episode of ''A's''. [[spoiler: It was the only thing left behind after Reinforce Eins' HeroicSuicide.]]
* CripplingOverspecialization: She can use very powerful, wide area bombardment magic, to the point where the TSAB sends out evacuation warnings every time she's on the field. The problem is, this is all she's capable of doing, and the fact the she needs assistance to even aim her spells makes it more of a disadvantage for her. By her own admission, she thinks even [[WhiteMage Caro]], without access to her dragons, would beat her in a one-on-one fight because of Nanoha's training.
* CrossAttack: Her Armed Device is named "Schwertkreuz," which means "Sword Cross" in GratuitousGerman. It normally takes the form of a small gold cross, usually hung on a gold chain like a pendant. The gold cross is originally the remaining non-magical fragment left behind by Reinforce and is used as part of the Device with Hayate's stated intention. When activated, it takes the form of a cross-shaped MagicStaff, serving as the cannon-body for Hayate's spells.
* CryIntoChest: In chapter 6 of the manga, she finally [[StepfordSmiler stops hiding her pain]] and [[spoiler: openly grieves for Reinforce]] while Nanoha and Fate comfort her. The scene was also adapted in the movie.
* DaChief: The role she takes in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'' - giving the orders and dealing with the higher-ups.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Despite having white colored magic, the Mistress of Night Sky has darkness magic and other destruction spells. For example, ''Diabolic Emission'' is a gigantic black sphere, and ''Ragnarök'' is a white WaveMotionGun surrounded with black lightnings - the movie version of it becomes darker when it hits the target.
* DelicateAndSickly: Due to the GreatBigBookOfEverything draining her life force. Once this stops, she gradually gets better.
** Her ''[[RealTrailerFakeMovie Iryou Shoujo Medical Shamal]]'' counterpart, [[Creator/KanaUeda Kana]][[TheDanza e]] Kagurai, is Yuzuko's ill adoptive mother.
* DemotedToExtra: While still having a very important role to the plot, in ''[=StrikerS=]'' due to her commander status she gets less action than her two new friends, or even her bodyguards. The few times she takes to the field, she only gets to fight MechaMooks. ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]'' somehow makes it worse by having her [[spoiler:get taken out before she managed to complete her first spell]]. Of course if she does use her powers properly, the incidents would be resolved pretty quickly, but still...
* DieOrFly: In the movie version of ''A's'', the Book of Darkness first activates to protect her when she's nearly run over by a truck whose driver fell asleep at the wheel.
* DisabilityNegatingSuperpower: She was paralyzed from the waist down in ''A's'', and the entire reason for the Wolkenritter's quest to complete the Book of Darkness is to use its power to cure Hayate of her disability, although they were willing to respect her wishes not to fill the book until they learned how much her condition was deteriorating. She regains the use of her feet as long as she was [[FusionDance in Unison with Reinforce]] and recovered completely in the ten years' TimeSkip to the next season.
* DoesNotKnowHerOwnStrength: In the side-manga, Hayate informs us that mages who have enormous magical power, such as herself, find it very difficult to execute smaller, faster, more manageable attacks. Hayate's mainstay is wide-area bombardment, to the point that the military issues evacuation notices when she takes the field. Her partner, Reinforce Zwei, helps her with fire-control. Which is odd given that Reinforce Eins' usage of spells like [[FlechetteStorm Blutiger Dolch/Bloody Dagger]] shows a capacity for fighting at the anti-personnel level. When she is without Rein she needs the ENTIRE BRIDGE CREW for helping her aim at TARGET SITES MEASURED IN ACRE-AGE!
* ExpectingSomeoneTaller: Apparently, if Einhart and the Grendels are to go by, people who don't personally know her seem to bear the assumption that she is an intimidating and serious sorceress befitting of the power and rank she holds. In reality, she is an adorable BunnyEarsLawyer who is one of the nicest people on Mid-Childa.
* ExpositoryHairstyleChange: Her hair changes twice. Once in the last chapter of the ''[=StrikerS=]'' manga, and then since ''[=ViVid=]''.
* {{Expy}}: Of Kari Yagami from ''Anime/DigimonAdventure'', another ill girl surnamed Yagami with short brown hair who unknowingly cohabites with one or more supernatural creatures working against the heroes, but which eventually make a HeelFaceTurn out of love for the girl and help her to unlock her shocking power in order to defeat the monstrous bad guy.
* FamedInStory: By the time of ''Force'', even small-time criminals like the Grendels know about the Living Lost Logia, Destroyer of the Saint's Cradle, Strategic War Asset of the Bureau, and so on--and that you just don't mess with her or her people.
* FirstNameBasis: Her family, Graham and her friends[[note]]Nanoha, Fate, Yuuno, Chrono, Carim and Verossa[[/note]] call her by her first name.
** LastNameBasis: Her subordinates and everyone else who appeared after ''A's'' call her [Commander] Yagami. Even Nanoha and Fate generally address her by last name and rank on duty, and she returns the favor.
* {{Foil}}: To Chrono Harlaown. The UnskilledButStrong Hayate is the warm and cheerful head of the Yagami family, while the WeakButSkilled Chrono is the cold and stoic officer who is in charge of the Book of Darkness Incident. Their growth makes it more obvious: In private situations, Chrono became more relaxed and he mellowed out; [[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce in duty]], Hayate became dead serious and shows little of her cheerful personality.
* ForcedToWatch: [[spoiler: The Liese Twins]] killed Vita and Zafira in front of her to invoke a TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening. In the movie, the Book of Darkness killed all of the Wolkenritter under similar circumstances.
* FriendlessBackground: She's an orphan who spent most of her childhood in and out of the hospital, so the only people she interacted with on a regular basis (before meeting the Wolkenritter) were doctors.
* FullPotentialUpgrade: After ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', the TSAB technicians were having enormous trouble creating a Device to handle Hayate's insane power output. She kept breaking all of them, so in the end she had to create one on her own.
* FusionDance: With Reinforce Eins, and later with Reinforce Zwei.
* GlassCannon: Hayate is useless in mage-to-mage close combat and she knows it well, but she's perfectly capable of wiping out entire armies of MechaMooks with her nuclear magic.
* GoodCounterpart: To Precia Testerossa. Both are SS-Ranked mages who were suffering from terminal illnesses, lost family members, had the UndyingLoyalty of respective season's {{Anti Villain}}s, and an association with cats (Precia had [[CatGirl Linith]] as her familiar and Hayate's first friend was [[KindheartedCatLover Suzuka]]). Precia was a cold AbusiveParent who treated Fate ([[ReplacementGoldfish who was created to be her daughter]]) like a tool, while Hayate treats the Wolkenritter (who were created to be her servants) as her family. Precia was the BigBad who ordered Fate to collect the Jewel Seeds while Hayate was oblivious to the actions of the Wolkenritter and would later go on to be the BigGood. Precia viewed Fate as a failed copy of Alicia while Hayate views Reinforce Zwei as a separate person from Reinforce Eins. And most tellingly, Precia had a cat familiar and Hayate has a Wolf [[InsistentTerminology Guardian Beast]].
* HairStyleInertia: Subverted since post-''[=StrikerS=]''.
* HandicappedBadass: Before her rehabilitation, she was confined to a wheelchair any time she wasn't transformed and thus able to fly in lieu of being able to walk.
* HealingFactor: In ''Force'', she mentions that she has "self-recovery", enabling her to withstand [[spoiler:being stabbed in the stomach]].
* HeartwarmingOrphan: Turns four cold-blooded warriors into four kind-hearted [[WhatMeasureIsANonHuman people]] just by being her cheerfully optimistic self. Though in a slight twist, they don't adopt her -- instead, [[WiseBeyondTheirYears she adopts them]].
* HeroicSelfDeprecation: Often engages in this with regards to her career, and despite her unit stopping the cradle and arresting Scaglietti in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', believes she was a failure as a commander.
* HollywoodHeartAttack: Actually, she suffered from several "Linker Core attacks".
* HowlOfSorrow: Combined with SkywardScream during her TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening.
* IKnowYoureInThereSomewhereFight: In ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', when she [[spoiler:is possessed by the Book Of Darkness]]. Also combined with FightingFromTheInside.
* IWantMyBelovedToBeFashionable: Non-romantic example. Hayate was not impressed by her Guardian Knights' sense of fashion (which boils down to pure combat functionality) and designs new, colorful outfits for them that emphasize their beauty (for Signum and Shamal), cuteness (Vita), or handsomeness (Zafira). That she is a CosplayOtakuGirl with a mind of a dirty old man means that these outfits are {{fanservice}}-y as hell--but the Knights don't even realize that: to them, their new outfits are a symbol of the unexpected kindness their master deigned to show them, so Vita, at the very least, grows [[BerserkButton violently protective of hers]]. Incidentally, this act also serves as a catalyst for the Knights' gradual {{defrosting|TheIceQueen}}.
* AnIcePerson: Her spells ''Atem des Eises'' and ''Heimdall'' are ice-based.
* ImHavingSoulPains: The Book of Darkness eating away at her Linker core was implied to cause her constant pain, but due to her nature as a StepfordSmiler she only showed it when no one else was around.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: In chapter 13 of ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]''. She gets better.
* InstantExpert: Played with. Since she cheated by having her head plugged into an ancient magical tome designed [[PowerCopying specifically to record spells and magical knowledge]], she has an amazing amount of power and knew how to cast right after she first transformed. While she does have the highest PowerLevel in the series, most of her magic is too impractical in a straight up fight because she doesn't know how to tone down her power for small scale work or even ''aim'' properly without help from MissionControl or Rein.
* {{Invocation}}: Hayate always invokes her spells unlike Nanoha and Fate. This is possibly due to the fact that her spells are so complicated that invoking them provides her with control over the spell's power.
* {{Irony}}: At the end of ''A's'', she mentions that she'll technically be working under Nanoha and Fate as their Kohai. Come ''[=StrikerS=]'', she's their superior officer.
* ItSucksToBeTheChosenOne: Hayate's status as the owner of the Book of Darkness directly results in her nearly dying from organ failure, spending a good chunk of her childhood in a wheelchair, [[spoiler:and the (temporary) murder of her entire adoptive family]].
* TheKidWithTheRemoteControl: She has absolute power over the Wolkenritter, but she never exercises this power since she views them as her family rather than her servants. She does give them orders in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikerS StrikerS]]'' and ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]'', but at that point they're all members of the [=TSAB=] and she's their commanding officer.
** There is a single time that she uses her authority over the book itself during the final battle in ''A's'', making it stop with a single word (after Nanoha had spent the past episode and a half unable to even ''scratch'' it).
* TheLeader: Hayate is the mistress of the Wolkenritter and head of the Yagami family, the commander of Riot Force 6 and later the commander of Special Duty Section 6.
* LightIsGood: Played with. While Hayate is indeed a good character and has white as her magic color, it's not LightEmUp. Hayate's magic is based of mainly darkness and destruction, and some of her spells are [[DarkIsNotEvil black]] (e.g. ''Diabolic Emission''). In ''The Movie 2nd A's'', her ''Ragnarök'' is a white WaveMotionGun surrounded with black lightnings that turns it darker and darker after it hits the target, to the point that the attack is more black than white.
* LimitBreak: ''Ragnarök'' in ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable A's Portable]]'', which deals 50% basic damage in the second game, that is above average.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: She was the only one unaware of the Wolkenritter's activities up until episode 9. She wasn't really bothered by it when she found out, mainly due the the fact that [[ForcedToWatch she had more important things to worry about at the time]].
* MagicKnight: She's referred as a "Mage Knight". However, she is not a straight example because "Knight" is what practitioners of Belkan magic are called, and in her case, her magic originated from assimilating an Ancient Belkan spellbook. Combat wise, she's a spellcaster who [[CripplingOverspecialization is limited to nukes]] and unlike her guardian knights, who are straight examples of this trope, she does not have melee capabilities.
* MamaBear: Hayate is very protective of her children and will not allow any disrespect to be said towards them. This is very prominently shown in ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable Battle of Aces]]'' wherein both Material-L and D mock Reinforce as being a broken down piece of trash Unison Device. Hayate is noticeably [[TranquilFury angry]] and proceeds to hand both Materials their asses (Reinforce herself is shocked [[OOCIsSeriousBusiness by how angry Hayate is during all this.]])
* MeaningfulName: Her last name Yagami is a homophone for "Night God". She's the master of the ''Tome of the Night Sky''. Her first name, Hayate, means Hurricane, which could reflect how her magic is extremely powerful but also difficult for her to control properly.
** The kanji for her last name actually means "Eight Gods" though.
* MergingMistake: During her first Unison with and Book of Darkness/Reinforce, her being still a muggle at that point, ends up with the Book taking her over.
* MissionControl: Is often seen alongside the [[BridgeBunny bridge bunnies]] in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]''.
* MoralityPet: Tragically deconstructed. Hayate's influence does end up making the Wolkenritter better people, but they end up doing terrible things for her sake (and hating themselves for it). It eventually reaches the point that they're willing to try and kill Nanoha and Fate to [[HeKnowsTooMuch keep her identity as the Master of the Book of Darkness a secret]] despite previously [[ThouShaltNotKill swearing to avoid killing anyone]].
* MorePoweredProtege: She is infinitely more powerful than her former mentor Genya, given that he's a NonActionGuy and she's a PersonOfMassDestruction. It helps that he was mentoring her to be a military officer rather than a combatant.
* [[NeverAcceptedInHisHometown Never Accepted In Her Hometown]]: Like Nanoha, is quite famous in the Bureau, apart from those who denounce her as a criminal, but on Earth, is less well-known, and had no friends prior to meeting Suzuka.
* NiceGirl: Just got four eternally loyal slaves? Treat them as family. Offered the chance to heal your paralyzed legs? Refuse it because innocent people would get hurt. [[TheOathbreaker Family does the one thing you told them not to do]]? Forgive them because they were trying to save you. [[PersonOfMassDestruction Become the most powerful person in the multiverse]]? Join TheFederation to make sure that no one suffers the way you did.
* NotAfraidToDie: Prior to the Wolkenritter entering her life, she didn't have any friends or family, so the prospect of being killed by an illness didn't scare her.
* NumberOfTheBeast: The Book of Darkness has 666 pages. Hayate Yagami herself is also associated with the number 6, who has [[GoodWingsEvilWings seraph wings]] and was born in June. Six years after the Book of Darkness Incident, she decides to found her own section to investigate the Relic incidents, four years later she achives her goal by founding the Riot Force 6. Six years after the JS Incident, she founds another section, Special Duty Section 6. The Yagami family has six members, Hayate herself, the four Wolkenritter and Reinforce Eins/Zwei. They adopt later a seventh member, Agito; but this can be interpreted as Hayate having six children now.
* OverrankedSoldier: Made Lieutenant-Colonel after at most ten years in service, and let's not even talk about the ImprobableAge. This is just not done in RealLife barring very unusual circumstances. Contrast with Nanoha's more reasonable non-Navy Captaincy. Several of the more experienced officers, however, still treat her like a young girl despite her position, and she suggests that rank is merely a "decoration" in the bureau.
** On the other hand, Hayate herself easily represents a concentration of raw power equivalent to (or more likely better than) the faux-battalion command she was given.
* ParentalAbandonment: She is an orphan, economically sustained by a friend of her dead parents. [[spoiler:It is revealed Gil Graham thought she would be ideal to awaken the Book of Darkness and be sealed away with it, so that few people would have to mourn her.]]
* PersonOfMassDestruction: At least on the same level as Fate and Nanoha at the end of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]''. By the time of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'' Hayate's lowest setting is about the same as a bombing run by a squadron of B-52s. Some of her more powerful attacks are easily in the tactical nuke range. She's even referred to as a "walking Lost Logia" in ''Force''.
** When she starts using her bombardment spells, the TSAB sends out ''evacuation warnings''.
* PowerDyesYourHair: Gets platinum-blond hair when unisoned with Reinforce Eins/Zwei.
* PowerGivesYouWings
* PowerfulAndHelpless: Hayate is without question the strongest living mage in the series, to the point that the TSAB has to put out evacuation warnings when she takes to the field (even her weakest spells are equivalent in power to carpet bombing). That said, there's very little practical application in a peacekeeping organization for "NUKE EVERYTHING!", so she makes do with her skills as a commanding officer most of the time.
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: With her uniform, as shown in the picture.
* PsychicLink: As Mistress of the Night Sky, she has a mental connection with the Wolkenritter beyond the normal {{Telepathy}} seen in the rest of the series, which lets her know when something bad has happened to them (usually life threatening injuries).
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Her eyes turn red during her TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening, signaling her [[FusionDance Unison]] with Reinforce.
* RedBaron: In ''Force'', the nickname "Living Lost Logia" is mentioned (appropriate enough, considering where she had gained her power from). There's also her official title, "Mistress of the Night Sky".
* ReformedButRejected: To a degree. Since she took responsibility for the Wolkenritter's crimes, she's treated as a former criminal, being allowed to serve in the Bureau but facing some suspicion and distrust from people. It's implied that she was made commander of Riot Force 6 because she would be expendable if it failed.
* ReligiousAndMythologicalThemeNaming: The names of most of her spells are taken from Norse Mythology.
* ResignedToTheCall: An interesting case. Her initial reaction to being informed that she was TheChosenOne can be summed up with the statement "Sure, I'll be the master." She never intended to use the Book of Darkness despite the limitless power it offered, content that it has provided her with people she can call family. After the Book of Darkness incident, she decides that it would be better if she used her power to help other people, and to atone for the crimes her guardians had committed.
* RulesOfOrphanEconomics: Hayate has an unseen HonoraryUncle who handles all her financial needs, including her hospital bills. [[spoiler:It was Graham's way of easing his guilty conscious before sacrificing her for the greater good. He continued to support her after the Book of Darkness incident up until she became an adult.]]
* TheSacredDarkness: As "Queen of the Night Sky," she has a holy significance to the Wolkenritter, and her CastingAShadow powers are a part of that.
* SciFiBobHaircut: In ''A's'' and ''[=StikerS=]'' Hayate has this type of haircut although she starts growing it longer in ''[=ViVid=]'' and by ''Force'' it is now about mid-length long so it no longer applies for this trope.
* ScissorsCutsRock: Although we never have seen how the results would turn out, Hayate is the only character in ''Force'' who can get away with using her magic in spite of how [[StoryBreakerPower broken]] the [[AntiMagic Eclipse]] is due to sheer power. At the least, she has is able to intimidate both the Hückebeins and Grendels.
* ShockAndAwe: Her spell ''Ragnarök'' is surrounded with black lightnings. The movie version have more lightnings which have more influence on it, as the beam becomes darker and darker when hitting the target, to the point that it's more black than white.
* SignificantBirthDate: She was born June 4th (6/4). It invokes both the NumberOfTheBeast and FourIsDeath, which perfectly describes her status as master of [[ArtifactOfDoom The Book]] [[ArtifactOfDeath of Darkness]].
* SkinshipGrope: In the [[AllThereInTheManual Sound Stages]], she seems rather fond of feeling up the other female characters, [[RefugeInAudacity and she refers to it as "sexual harassment"]]. She only gropes the girls she knows would consent, of course... but she's not above [[DudeShesLikeInAComa feeling Signum up when she's asleep so she doesn't have to ask.]]
* SoapOperaDisease: Inverted. While her doctors have no clue as to why the paralysis in her legs is slowly moving up her body, the Wolkenritter and the audience are all too aware that it's being caused by the [[ArtifactOfDeath Book of Darkness]].
* SocialServicesDoesNotExist: While she did have financial support, Hayate apparently lived by herself before the Wolkenritter arrived. Really, ''nobody'' had a problem with the paraplegic nine-year-old living alone?
** Given what's revealed near the end of the season, [[spoiler:it's likely that Graham paid the authorities to look the other way.]]
* SquishyWizard: Claims that even Caro might be able to defeat her in single combat ''without her dragons''. However, it's pointed out soon afterward that despite having difficulty in single combat, she's able to use her power to her fullest potential when surrounded by her allies.
* StayWithTheAliens: After graduating from middle school, she moves to live on Mid-Childa. Taking her entire family with her, there's even less that ties her to Earth than Nanoha, and after a visit to Earth for a mission, says that Riot Force 6 is her home.
* StepfordSmiler: Acts this way at times, as Shamal notes that she hides her pain from her family. [[spoiler:After Reinforce Eins sacrifices herself so that the Book of Darkness will be sealed forever she puts on a brave face and only breaks down in tears when Fate and Nanoha give her a CooldownHug and tell her that she doesn't have to be strong in front of them.]]
* SupremeChef: Everyone who eats her food loves it, especially the ever cynical Vita. In fact, one of the [[AudioAdaptation Sound Stages]] of ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable The Gears of Destiny]]'' revealed that her cooking skills are so significant, [[NobleDemon Lord Dearche]] accidentally [[PowerCopying got them when she copied Hayate's powers]]. This led to [[OtherMeAnnoysMe one of the only]] times that Lord Dearche complimented Hayate, since Dearche gets a lot of praise in her new home for her cooking.
* TakenForGranite: ''Mistilteinn'', a spell that petrifies the target by throwing multiple energy "spears".
* TakingTheHeat: She willingly took a majority of the blame for the Book of Darkness incident. Partially to protect her family, and partially because she felt responsible for their actions.
* TaremeEyes: Matching to Nanoha and Fate's eyes.
* TeamMom: For the Wolkenritter.
* TerrorHero: As of ''Force'', a mere mention of her name causes the Grendels to give up escaping from Section 6. To put it in perspective, the Grendel are infected with a virus that makes them downright immune to magic, but are terrified of her power.
* ThatsAnOrder: Hayate tries to invoke this on Reinforce twice: the first time to stop her from giving into despair and later [[spoiler:to stop Reinforce from sacrificing herself]].
* ThrowingOffTheDisability: She eventually regained the ability to walk after the events of ''A's'' thanks to no longer being under the effects of the Book of Darkness, though she still had to undergo several years of physical therapy.
* TookALevelInBadass: She went from WheelchairWoobie to PersonOfMassDestruction.
* TraumaticSuperpowerAwakening: Invoked. [[spoiler: The Liese Twins]] disguised themselves as Nanoha and Fate, told her that her illness was uncurable and fatal, and ''slaughtered her family in front of her on Christmas Eve''; all so she'd unlock the power of the [[ArtifactOfDoom Book of Darkness]].
* TryingNotToCry: The companion manga and movie adaptation of ''A's'' have a scene where Hayate berates herself for tearing up when Nanoha brings up [[spoiler:Reinforce's HeroicSacrifice]]. In response, Nanoha and Fate pull her into a hug and tell her that she doesn't need to force herself to be strong in this case, leading to [[StepfordSmiler all the emotions she'd kept bottled up]] to come pouring out at once.
* UnexplainedAccent: She has a Kansai dialect despite coming from the same city as Nanoha, Arisa, and Suzuka.
* UnskilledButStrong: Has incredibly powerful bombardment magic, but that takes a long time to cast and has little use in close-quarters combat.
** To the point that she says in the supplementary manga that she might be able to beat Caro in a fight. If Caro didn't have access to either of her dragons. ...then she realizes Caro's been training under Nanoha, and says she wouldn't win anyway.
* UselessWithoutPowers: At the end of ''A's'', Hayate becomes the most powerful human mage in the multiverse. However, outside of Unison with Reinforce, she is just a crippled nine-year-old girl. It is especially evident in the last episode, [[spoiler:where she is unable to even reach Reinforce in attempt to prevent her HeroicSuicide despite only being a few feet away]]. She gets better during TimeSkip, however.
* WaveMotionGun: Most notably her spell ''Ragnarök'', a part of the famous ''Triple Breaker''. ''Hræsvelgr'' is a [[BeamSpam Wave Motion Spam]].
* WeakBossStrongUnderlings: As commander of Riot Force 6, she has a higher power rating than anyone else in the series, but in practice, she's the least capable in a one-on-one fight, weaker than even Caro.
* WhenSheSmiles: For the Wolkenritter, happiness is defined as "seeing Hayate smile".
* WiseBeyondHerYears: So far the champion of this trope in all of ''Nanoha'', considering she was the mother figure of her adoptive family ''at the age of nine''. In the movie she even calls Reinforce (who has full memories of her centuries if not millennia of existence) "my child" mere minutes after meeting her.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: Briefly, although she got over it.
* WorthLivingFor: She had resigned to the fact that she was going to die from an unknown illness at the age of nine since she didn't have any friends or family. It was only after the Wolkenritter entered her life that she actually found herself actually wanting to survive. She still wasn't afraid of dying ''per se'', but she was afraid of leaving her new family all alone. In a tragic case of irony, the very people that gave her the will to live were (through no fault of their own) causing her to die ''faster''. She gets better, and in the process decides to live for more than just "my family and friends would be sad if I died".
* YourDaysAreNumbered: Hayate was bound to [[ArtifactOfDoom the Book of Darkness]], which was slowly eating away at her life force and had rendered her parapalegic. The plot of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'' was set in motion by [[AntiVillain the Wolkenritter]] attempting to satiate the book's hunger with stolen Linker Cores in the hope that it would reverse (or at the very least halt) her deteriorating condition. Thanks to her being freed from the book's influence at the end of the season, she ends up making a full recovery and eventually regained use of her legs.

!!The Wolkenritter
[[folder:The Wolkenritter]]
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/wolken_7333.jpg]]

They are the four guardians born out of [[ArtifactOfDoom the Book of Darkness]]. The ladies are Signum, Vita and Shamal, while Zafira is a wolf who can change into a [[LittleBitBeastly wolfman]]. Their quest is to gather Linker Cores to complete the Book Of Darkness. Like most of the other antagonists in the show, they are very much [[AntiVillain Anti-Villains]] - they want to complete the Book of Darkness only to prevent it from killing Hayate. Their Linker Cores are eventually drained by Lieselotte and Liesearia, but Hayate is able to revive them. Thanks to Hayate reprogramming the system of the Book of Darkness, the Wolkenritter are separated from the Book now and they are finally able to escape from the cycle of the Book's history of destruction.

At the end of the second season, they [[HeelFaceTurn become good guys]] and later move to Mid-Childa with Hayate. Joining them is the actual ArtifactOfDoom, the Book Of Darkness, now known by its real name, the ''Tome of Night Sky'', and Reinforce Zwei, a Unison Device similar to the Book of Darkness' original AI program. Later, another Unison Device, Agito, joins the family.
----
* AdaptationalVillainy: Parodied in ''[[RealTrailerFakeMovie Iryou Shojo Medical Shamal]]'', Signum, Vita and Zafira as well as Reinforce Eins are part of the villain group that opposes Medical Shamal. The former three play the villain part with [[EvilIsHammy gusto]].
* AntiVillain: In ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', they seek to save Hayate's life while minimizing harm, and according to Signum in Sound Stage 3 of ''A's'', planned on turning themselves in after saving her.
* ArtificialHuman: The Wolkenritter are autonomous programs apparently run by the [[ArtifactOfDoom Book of Darkness]]. [[spoiler:Fate]] compares them to herself.
* AscendedExtra: The four of them with Hayate and both Reinforces are the main characters in the RealTrailerFakeMovie ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmgzRbZu4M8 Mahou Kazoku Lyrical Wolken]]''.
* TheAtoner: Strongly motivated by a desire to make up for what they did in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', and before.
* BadassCreed: They get a rather epic one in ''A's'' about their UndyingLoyalty to Hayate after [[spoiler: she revives them]]:
-->'''Signum''': We are the the guardian knights who gather before our mistress, she of the night sky. \
'''Shamal''': As long as our mistress exists, our souls will never extinguish. \
'''Zafira''': As long as we have life in our bodies, we will stand by each other. \
'''Vita''': We will always exist before our mistress, Queen of the Night Sky, Yagami Hayate.
* BadassCrew: Before Hayate came along they were simply comrades-in-arms, sworn guardians of the Book of Darkness and it's master. By the time of their introduction, this dynamic was replaced with...
* BadassFamily: Along with Hayate and Reinforce Eins. The latter is succeeded by Reinforce Zwei, and Agito joins them later. In fact, they probably are the strongest good family in the series.
* BattleButler: Inverted. The Wolkenritter's first and most important duty is to defend the Book's master or mistress. They just happen to have minor domestic skills as well.
* BecauseYouWereNiceToMe: Played with. They would have been loyal to Hayate regardless of how she treated them, but since Hayate showed them kindness (and treated them like her family), they were willing to go ''against'' her wishes to save her rather than follow her request to leave the Book of Darkness alone.
* BroughtDownToNormal: Downplayed but present. In ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', Shamal notes that she and the other Wolkenritter have lost their immortality, and are content with this. Not surprising, seeing as after the corruption of the Tome, their immortal lives were more like a series of reincarnations each one only lasting as long as their master, which typically wasn't very long. They also lost some of their memories between each cycle.
** It was also implied that other aspects of their powers also will be reduced with time like their resillence, stamina and strength. It finally took it's toll during the ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]'' manga where they're noticeable weaker and frailer than in past seasons where their bodies were able to take much more punishment.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: Averted. The only time they actually lose a fight during ''A's'' was against [[spoiler: the Liese Twins]] and the Wolkenritter don't care for them at all.
* DisneyDeath: In ''A's'' and ''The Movie 2nd A's'', they are killed due to their Linker Core's being drained by the Book of Darkness. However, Hayate is able to reprograms the Book of Darkness and reactivates the Guardian Knight System, following their revival.
* DontTellMama: They tried to keep their hunting of Linker Cores a secret from Hayate because they knew that she would disapprove.
* EmptyPilesOfClothing: After being "absorbed" into the Book of Darkness, only their winter clothes remain.
* ForcedIntoEvil: They spent centuries having to follow the orders of the masters of the Book of Darkness and it is implied that most of them used their power for evil or selfish ends. When they finally got a master who had no interest in power and had explicitly ordered them to just live a normal life with her, they still had to resort to what they deemed as an evil task (collecting linker cores from either human mages or beings that possessed magic) because [[SadisticChoice she would die otherwise]].
* FourTemperamentEnsemble: [[{{Tsundere}} Vita]] is choleric, [[SugarAndIcePersonality Signum]] is melancholic, [[ProperLady Shamal]] is sanguine and [[TheQuietOne Zafira]] is phlegmatic.
* GoodCostumeSwitch: Back when they were serving masters in ancient Belka who wanted the book's power, their armor looked "rough," according to Hayate, and ''Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaVivid'' shows them wearing Knight Armors that look like typical plate mail. Justfied because each master designs the armors they wear.
* GratuitousGerman: Their Armed Devices, except for Zafira, since he doesn't use one. In ''The Movie 2nd A's'', Graf Eisen and the Book of Darkness got more lines while Laevatein and Klarwind got less lines.
* HappilyAdopted: By [[WiseBeyondHerYears Hayate]], despite the fact that [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld they are older than her by several orders of magnitude]].
* HeelFaceTurn: They and Hayate joined the TSAB to redeem their sins.
* IJustWantToBeNormal: The ArcWords of ''A's'', "It was a simple wish" refer to their desire to simply live out a normal life with Hayate. However, it's downplayed since they take great pride in their powers and abilities.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: All four of them were impaled by the Book of Darkness' vines when they were [[DisneyDeath absorbed]] in ''The Movie 2nd A's''. [[BreakTheCutie Right in front of Hayate]].
* LateArrivalSpoiler: Since ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]''.
* LoveRedeems: This is the reason why the Wolkenritter weren't the [[RidiculouslyHumanRobots cold-blooded weapons]] that [[TheFederation the Time-Space Administration Bureau]] remembered when they appeared. Hayate loved them so and treated them as her family, so the Wolkenritter gained personalities with kind hearts.
* MagicKnight: [[MadeOfMagic Pretty much literally]].
* MeaningfulName: "Wolkenritter" is German for "Cloud Knight(s)". They are the knights who guard the Mistress of the Night Sky.
* MundaneLuxury: They spent centuries killing and fighting for their lives pretty much non-stop, so the idea that they can wear casual clothes, eat home-made food, and go to sleep at the same place every night is both revolutionary and extremely intriguing to them. So much so that they are prepared to sacrifice pretty much anything for it to continue just a little bit longer.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: They are bound to obey whoever was the master of the Book of Darkness, no matter how unreasonable the master was. [[spoiler: After the events of ''A's'', they are no longer bound to the book and this gets replaced with pure UndyingLoyalty.]]
* TheOathbreaker: They were forced to break their promise to Hayate when her life was in danger. Given their ancient Belkan values, this caused them a great deal of grief.
* OnlyOneName: Subverted in ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent INNOCENT]]'', where they (except Zafira) got ''Yagami'' as their family name.
* OvershadowedByAwesome: Hit with this trope during most of the events in ''Force'', including Hayate, Agito and probably Rein.
* ThePsychoRangers: While not actually evil, they fufill this role during their stint as antagonists during ''A's''.
** Nanoha and Vita are the respective heavy hitters.
** Fate and Signum both are melee fighters with elemental powers.
** Arf and Zafira are shapeshifting wolf familiars ([[InsistentTerminology or Guardian Beasts]]) that fight unarmed.
** Yuuno and Shamal are the {{Support Party Member}}s with green magic that spend most of their time working behind the scenes.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: The Wolkenritter date to some period in Ancient Belka. Actual age is vague but is at least centuries and probably more like millenia. Vita, of course, doesn't look the part at all, but none of the others look over the metaphorical hill either.
* RidiculouslyHumanRobots: Technically speaking, they're magical [=AIs=] with artificially constructed bodies made of mana that never age. In every other aspect (appearance, emotion, hunger, exhaustion, pain, ect...), [[AndroidsArePeopleToo they're human]].
* RelativelyFlimsyExcuse: After Hayate summons the Wolkenritter and wakes up in the hospital after fainting from shock, she tells her doctor that they are her foreign relatives. She later goes on to refer to them as her family.
* SadisticChoice: When the Book of Darkness started to slowly kill Hayate they had two options: do nothing and let her die, or betray her trust and try to save her. They took the second option, leading to the events of ''A's''.
* ThouShaltNotKill: While they personally don't have any problems killing should the need arise, they swore not to kill anybody while collecting pages for the Book of Darkness to avoid defiling Hayate's name with blood.
* ToBeLawfulOrGood: The Wolkenritter swore an oath to Hayate to not carry out their primary function of violently collecting other mages' Linker Cores in order to complete the Book of Darkness. However, faced with the prospect of the Book slowly devouring Hayate instead, they are forced to break their oath in secret in order to save her life, going to great lengths to at least ensure their victims are not ''permanently'' handicapped, in token adherence to Hayate's wishes. As the Wolkenritter come from a culture of chivalric values, having to make this choice causes all of them, but especially their honorable-to-a-fault leader Signum extreme psychological anguish, but they stick with being Good to the bitter end.
* TripleShifter: Due to spending their days with Hayate and their nights out hunting for Linker Cores, they often woke up late during ''A's''.
* UndyingLoyalty: Hayate was the first person in hundreds of years (possibly their entire lives) to bring them happiness. And they would throw away that happiness, their lives, and their honor without a second thought if it meant that she would live to smile another day.
* VehicularThemeNaming: Signum, Vita, and Zafira are model names from the German car manufacturer Opel. Shamal is a model from Italian car manufacturer Maserati.
* VillainsOutShopping: They have various hobbies that serve as excuses to get out of the house and hunt Linker Cores; Signum teaches at a dojo, Vita plays croquet with senior citizens, [[HouseWife Shamal gossips with neighborhood wives]] and Zafira follows the others around.
* WhatMeasureIsANonHuman: The Wolkenritter's previous masters apparently didn't consider them to be people. Hayate ''does'' think they're people though, and that makes all the difference, turning them from coldhearted killers into a [[BadassFamily happy family]].
* WhoWantsToLiveForever: After being freed from the curse of the Book of Darkness, they slowly show signs of being more human, as their immortality had disappeared and their healing and resilience started deteriorating. A conversation between Shamal and Vita during ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'' state that all four of them are aware of this but don't particularly care about it, since all of them want to spend their last life with Hayate.

-> ''"I'm an old knight. [...] All I can teach them is to get up close and slice the enemy to pieces."''

TheStoic leader of the group, armed with the flaming sword ''Laevatein''. She [[BloodKnight lives for battles]] and as a result is the best fighter among Wolkenritter. Fate's WorthyOpponent. Later the two become close friends.

By ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', she's moved to Mid-Childa with Hayate and the other Wolkenritter, and become one of the vice-captains alongside Vita of Hayate's Riot Force Six and is Fate's sub-commander in the Lightning unit. Her callsign is Lightning 2. Unlike Nanoha, Vita and Fate, Signum doesn't teach the Forwards in combat, but she teaches Erio Mondial her SignatureMove, ''Shiden Issen'', which he uses to defeat Garyu. Signum defeats Zest Grangaitz by killing him and fulfills his last will by becoming Agito's new master, who is later adopted by the Yagami family.

In ''[=ViVid=]'', she has taught Zafira's disciple, Miura Rinaldi, which is reflected in Miura's sword-slashes resembling fighting style. Presumely, Signum taught her ''Bakken: Hiryū'', which is based of her ''Hiryū Issen'', and ''Tenka Kūga'', which is based of her ''Kūga'' techniques.

In ''Force'', she's a member of Hayate's Special Duty Section Six, and she encounters her new rival, Cypha Hückebein, who defeats Signum in their first battle. Fortunately, Signum recovers from her grievious injuries and she and Cypha cross their blades a second time, this time Signum is victorious. The Knight of the Flaming Sword also has become a swordsmanship mentor to Thoma Avenir.
----
* ActionGirl: Duh!
* AffectionateNickname: Levi the Slasher calls her "Bushido".
* BadassLongcoat: In ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]''.
* {{BFS}}: Her AEC-Equipment, [=CW-AEC05X=] Gladiator, in ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]'' ended up being a [[http://img837.imageshack.us/img837/8352/signumaec01.jpg giant wide blade]].
** LuckilyMyShieldWillProtectMe: ...accompanied by a [[http://img856.imageshack.us/img856/4484/signumaec02.jpg buckler shield]] [[RuleOfCool ...with missiles]].
* BigSisterMentor: She becomes the swordsman teacher of Thoma Avenir who views her as one of his many CoolBigSis. Also the mentor of Erio Mondial, but she may or may not fits the big sister type for him.
* BloodKnight: More so than Nanoha, despite the latter's [[MemeticMutation reputation among the fandom]]. She never passes up a chance to brawl with a WorthyOpponent.
** Somehow defied in ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]'', where Signum [[spoiler:didn't show any visible motivation in pursuing a rematch with Cypha even after the Hückebein swordswoman [[CurbStompBattle utterly trounced]] and [[NearDeathExperience near-killed]] her in battle. However, it's worth pointing out that she did seem eager to continue their rematch in chapter 25]].
* BowAndSwordInAccord: Of the "Bow and sword are the same weapon" variety. Laevatein can combine with it's sheath to form a bow, although she almost never uses it.
* CodeName: Lightning 2 in Riot Force 6, and Riot 2 in Special Duty Section 6.
* ComplainingAboutRescuesTheyDontLike: In the space of a single episode, says she won't thank Fate for saving her from a monster (because she destroyed it and the Linker Core she wanted to collect), and is outraged when the MysteriousProtector intervenes by ripping out Fate's Linker Core (presumably because of Fate being a WorthyOpponent).
* ConnectedAllAlong: It's never flat out stated, but it is ''heavily'' implied that she was Agito's original lord.
* ContraltoOfStrength: Signum has a very low and powerful voice, as befits a tough swordswoman--which is also her singing voice, as one of the Sound Stages reveals.
* CoolBigSis: Becomes sort of this during ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', but specially to Fate, Vice and Alto. In ''Force'' she seems to be heading to be this for Thoma as [[spoiler:she feels responsible for not being able to save him (see FailureKnight below)]]. More or less confirmed in ''[[VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny The Gears of Destiny]]'' [[AllThereInTheManual PSP game]] where Thoma calls her ''Signum-oneesan''.
* CoolSword: Laevatein is a mechanical sword with a bolt-action [[NitroBoost cartridge system]] that can [[FlamingSword burst into flame]], split into sections as a WhipSword, and [[BifurcatedWeapon combine with its sheath]] to form a bow. Plus, it's a LargeHam that speaks [[GratuitousGerman German]] and is voiced by Creator/TetsuyaKakihara.
* DCupDistress: It doesn't come up very often, but the Sound Stages have her get into an uncharacteristically immature bickering match with Vita after the latter mocks her as a "Boob Demon" whose bust size is inversely proportional to her heart, and is quite embarrassed that Hayate finds her breasts so fun to grope.
* DefeatingTheUndefeatable: Though her fights tend to end in a draw, she's never lost a battle as far as we know, until chapter 7 of ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]'', where [[spoiler: Cypha of Hückebein nearly kills her]].
* DoesNotKnowHerOwnStrength: She can't do smaller tasks variation. Once she refused to heat up water for bathing because of that. Also breaking your own freaking sword with the sheer force of your attack is a truly impressive proof of your strength.
* EnergyBow: Her ''[[GratuitousGerman Sturmfalken]]'', an energy projectile launched from her Device Laevatein when it assumes its rare bow form.
* EvasiveFightThreadEpisode:
** See the entry for Nanoha Takamachi.
** She also had one with Fate during ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', until a later ''Sound Stage'' revealed that she kicked Fate's ass during most of their {{Lighthearted Rematch}}es a few months after ''A's''. In ''The Battle of Aces'', Fate suggests that she lost eight out of ten of their sparring matches.
* EveryoneCallsHimBarkeep: Reinforce always calls her "general", but rarely calls her by her name.
* {{Expy}}: She is also noted by fans to be a magnificent one of Lamia Loveless from ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars''. They don't look much alike, but share many traits, including having [[Creator/KaoriShimizu the same voice actress]].
** Signum could also be based of [[VideoGame/SoulSeries Isabella "Ivy" Valentine]], a swordswoman with a magical WhipSword. If you spell Laevatein as [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Levantine]] it's a SignificantAnagram of Ivy's sword Valentine.
* FailureKnight: During ''Force'' chapter 20 [[spoiler:Signum talks about the irrepressable remorse that comes with defeat when there are important things at stake. All while she apologizes to Thoma and Lily, twice, for being unable to save them from Cypha, showing that she indeed feel guilt about her failure]].
* FieryStoic: Signum has a natural affinity for the fire element (allowing her to convert her mana into flame at will) and includes flames in pretty much all of her combat spells. Personality-wise, she is one of the biggest stoics in the series, to the point of GermanicDepressives. This is possibly justified by elemental affinities being a random genetic trait, rather than being tied to mages' personalities.
* FlamingSword: Laevatein. Signum's ''Shiden Issen'' is her signature spell.
** When using ''Karyu Issen'', Signum and Agito create a shaft of flames and holds it as if it were a sword. By swinging her arm, she can throw the condensed flames against enemies that are far away.
* FragileSpeedster: Against the anti-magic weaponry of the Huckebein, she has to rely on parries and evasion because her usual magic-based shields don't work.
* FusionDance: With Reinforce Zwei and with Agito. Signum is the character with the most seen Unisons in the series, having been in Unison with Rein twice, and with Agito three times. Two of them in ''[=StrikerS=]'', and three of them in ''Force''.
* GermanicDepressives: One of the most serious characters among the cast, even compared to the other Wolkenritter. Hayate and Fate attempt at various points to get her to relax.
* GetAHoldOfYourselfWoman: Signum delivers a "''Signum Punch''" to Teana in order to straighten her up at one point, saying that she will get spoiled if Nanoha listens to her complaints.
** Notably Teana was [[PunchedAcrossTheRoom launched meters back]] and Signum assures the rest of the shocked crew that it's okay because she "held back".
* HandicappedBadass: [[spoiler:She managed to raise from bed and even have a sparring match with Thoma right of the bat but, while still a decent fighter, her body hasn't fully recovered yet and it's even implied that the injuries sustained in her fight with Cypha could leave permanent sequels on her... and the next time she fought Cypha, Signum utterly trounces her.]]
* HellishPupils: In Unison with Agito.
* IdiotHair: Not as long as Vita's.
* IGaveMyWord: Subverted. She promised Hayate that she and the other Wolkenritter wouldn't try to fill the Book of Darkness, but when Hayate is revealed to be dying she is the one to come up with the idea that they use it to save her. As a person who greatly values her honor, this should tell you how much Hayate means to her.
* LadyOfWar: She's an honorable knight who invokes the cool, collected demeanor of the ideal {{Samurai}}. Her use of Laevatein as a WhipSword or EnergyBow give her attacks a sense of grace, which is also present in her smooth movements par being an [[{{Flight}} Aerial Mage]].
* TheLancer: To Hayate. And to Fate in the Lightning Unit.
* LargeHam: Her device Laevatein tends to pronounces his [[GratuitousGerman words]] in this way.
* LastNameBasis: Refers to Fate as "Testarossa" even after Fate changes that to her middle name after being adopted by the Harlaowns. Interestingly enough, she refers to most of her other friends by [[FirstNameBasis their first names]].
* TheLeader: Of the Wolkenritter.
* LegFocus: Her Knight's Clothing shows off her legs from her thighs all the way down to her ankles. Given the fact that [[CosplayOtakuGirl Hayate]] designed it, this was definitely on purpose.
* LeeroyJenkins: Her fighting style in ''Force'' so far. [[spoiler:[[WorfHadTheFlu It worked as well as one can expect]]]].
* LightningBruiser: Signum keeps up with Fate's Sonic Form with ease. She also trashes pretty much anything that's looked at her funny. Her Knight Clothing is lighter than Vita's Knight Armor, allowing her more agile maneuvering, but Signum's defense spells are very powerful.
** Seeing as how [[spoiler:the effectiveness of her defensive and offensive powers/skills got ruined by the new rules installed by the ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]'' manga]] Signum will probably be in need of adapt a new hit-and-run strategy from now on. Passing into FragileSpeedster territory in order to not be kicked out of the CompetenceZone.
*** Confirmed in chapter 20 as Signum fights against Thoma and leaves almost all of her protection in the hands of Agito and Laevatein, preferring to parry and dodge than turtling like in past battles.
* LimitBreak: ''Sturmfalken'' in ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable A's Portable]]'', which deals 42% basic damage in the second game, that is below average.
* LogicalWeakness: The nigh-undefeatable Knight of the Sword does have one key vulnerability -- as a magical construct, AntiMagic weaponry is especially dangerous to her. [[spoiler:Brutally demonstrated once the Hückebein show up]].
* MageMarksman: Her attack ''[[GratuitousGerman Sturmfalken]]'' has her create a magical arrow that creates a big explosion. In the movie adaptation of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', the energy around the arrow takes the form of a fire falcon.
* MagicFire: Signum specializes in fire magic, which like all magic can be made non-lethal. [[spoiler:Its magical nature also means that it can be dispelled by AntiMagic, as shown in ''Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce'']]
* MasterOfAll: She can match Nanoha in offensive power, Fate in speed, and Vita in defensive strength, and can even approach Hayate's power with large-area bombardments. She is never defeated on-screen until ''Force''. [[spoiler: Once that happens, this is averted; she adopts the tactics of a FragileSpeedster to battle against Cypha, who can cut through her magic shields unopposed.]]
* MyGreatestFailure: She apologized to Thoma twice in their first conversation for getting captured because she was defeated.
* NearDeathExperience: Is put through one at the beginning of ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]''. She wakes up in chapter 18 and fully recovers later.
* NonIndicativeName: ''Shiden Issen'' is translated as "Purple Lightning Flash". Signum's version is not purple and it's a fire elemental sword slash. She teaches it to Erio in ''[=StrikerS=]'', but his version has at least something to do with lightning.
* NotSoStoic: Pounding a wall in frustration after hearing about Hayate's illness being potentially life-threatening, and shedding a single tear in response to Fate's suggestion that they could still be friends. She also doesn't exactly take it very well when Vita calls her "Boob Demon", or when her MysteriousProtector intervenes on her behalf during her third fight with Fate.
* OldSoldier: Signum becomes this after being transported to the modern Mid-Childan society, where her old Belkan sensibilities undergo a transformation to adapt to a society based on (non-)humanism rather than wartime duty and knightly honor. Unlike Vita, who finds herself in training the new generation of mages in this new world, Signum continues doing what she did her entire, very long life--fighting--and declining opportunities to do anything else (see her old knight quote above). While not as grumpy as the typical examples of this trope, she does call out the rookies (e.g. Teana) on their mistakes.
* PlayingWithFire: She's not called ''General of the Raging Fire''[[note]]Rekka no Shō[[/note]] for nothing. Her magical fire, however, is still magical and thus [[spoiler:gets dispelled like everything else by Cypha of Hückebein's Reacted form]].
* PowerDyesYourHair: In Unison with Rein, she gets violet hair; and with Agito, she gets reddish blond hair.
* PowerGivesYouWings: When unisoned with Agito, she gets two pairs of flaming wings, which go nicely with Laevatein.
** For some reason [[spoiler:the wings dissapeared when she unisons with Agito after her return to the battlefield in ''Force'']].
* PurpleIsPowerful: Her magic color is purple and she's the strongest of the Wolkenritter. In Unison with Rein, her hair and the magenta parts of her Knight Clothing turn violet.
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: With her uniform and her casual outfit in A's.
* QuitYourWhining: Has this attitude toward Teana in [=StrikerS=].
* RankUp: She's a Second Lieutenant in ''[=StrikerS=]'' and is a Captain since ''[=ViVid=]''.
* TheRival: Was one to Fate in ''A's''. Later gets her own rival in the form of [[AxCrazy Cy]][[EvilCounterpart pha]] in ''Force''.
* SadisticChoice: As the leader of the Wolkeritter, it ultimately fell to her to decide what to do when they found out that the Book of Darkness was the cause of Hayate's illness which would ultimately kill her. She comes to the conclusion that saving Hayate's life was far more important than her (and by extension the other's) honor as knights so she breaks her oath to Hayate and undertakes the completion of the Book of Darkness. She does set compromises in that they aren't allowed to kill or permanently cripple any human mage that tries to stop them (to avoid staining Hayate's name with bloodshed) and they are only to hunt cores in remote planets that have magical creatures.
* SamuraiPonytail: Is a bushido like character and has a ponytail that fits her character.
* SignatureMove: ''Shiden Issen''[[note]]Purple Lightning Flash[[/note]] and ''Schlangebeißen''.
* SingleTear: After Fate says they could still be friends while she's trying to kill her to conceal Hayate's identity as their master.
* SlipknotPonytail: In the 3rd season - a [[MythologyGag nod]] to Miyuki from ''Triangle Heart 3''.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Not Signum herself, but her sword has a bad case of this: Laevatine, Levantine, Laevatein, etc. It's written in kana as 'REVANTIN', and pronounced more or less like 'le-VAN-tin' (Levantine). Most people assume it's meant to be a reference to the sword Lævateinn from Norse mythology, although that would properly be pronounced more like "levatyne". It may actually be a MultipleReferencePun, referencing both Lævateinn and Valentine (see {{Expy}} note above).
* StoneWall: Her combat style when fighting opponents of equal power. She wears down their energy by turtling, then when they're out of steam and leave themselves open, knocks them flat. Most visible in her second duel with Nanoha.
** Subverted in ''Force'' where [[spoiler:Cypha of Hückebein slices through her defenses like a hot knife on butter]]. Having a LogicalWeakness kind of sucks like that.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: Another thing that comes with her {{Expy}} package.
* SuperStrength: Like all Belka-style magic users, she enhances her body with magic to fight. Even an unaugmented punch from her can send someone flying across the room, and when fighting at her full strength, she has managed to ''break her sword''.
* SwissArmyWeapon: [[CoolSword Laevatein]].
* {{Tomboy}}: One of the least feminine character, if not ''the'' least feminine. However, that doesn't stop her from being a LadyOfWar.
** TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The tomboy to Shamal's girly girl. In ''[[RealTrailerFakeMovie Mahou Kazoku Lyrical Wolken]]'', Signum is the ''father'' figure while Shamal is the mother figure.
** TomboyishPonytail: Doubles as her SamuraiPonytail.
* TsurimeEyes: Fitting for her stoic and serious character.
* VocalEvolution: Her voice became deeper after early episodes and even ''deeper'' after ''A's''. In post-''[=StrikerS=]'' media, her voice has became even deeper ''yet again''.
* WaveMotionSword: Throws curtains of fire with Laevatein, ''Sturmwinde''. Her non-fire spell ''Hiryu Issen'' is also this (which is fire elemental in the video games).
** When using her bombardment spell ''Karyu Issen'', she and Agito create a shaft of flames and holds it as if it were a sword. By swinging her arm, she can throw the condensed flames against enemies that are far away. It destroys over 50 Type-II Gadget Drones with a single attack.
* WeakButSkilled: [[spoiler:After her defeat by Cypha, due to the conditions of the battlefield in ''Force'']].
* WhipSword: Laevatein's snake form, combined with VariableLengthChain.
* WorfHadTheFlu: [[spoiler:Actually inverts this during her rematch against Cypha. Despite technically still being under medical rehabilitation, she sends the so-called Ace fleeing in the span of a single chapter.]]
* WorthyOpponent: She had a great deal of respect for Fate as a warrior during ''A's'', and was furious when the Masked Man interuppted their third battle. They easily segue into a FriendlyRivalry once they're on the same side.
--> '''Signum:''' Had we not met like this, we could have been good friends.
* WreckedWeapon: Laevatein and [=CW-AEC05X=] Gladiator in ''Force''.
* YouMonster: In the last chapter of the ''[=StrikerS=]'' supplementary manga, she calls Nanoha a monster after the draw of their mock battle and thought she would die. Nanoha thinks in a similar way about her.
* YouWillNotEvadeMe: Laevatein can be used for this in ''VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable''.

-> ''"The Knight of the Iron Hammer, Vita, and the Steel Count, Graf Eisen. There's nothing in this world we can't destroy."''

The [[LittleMissBadass Child]] of the bunch. She wields the Armed Device ''Graf Eisen'', an {{Expy}} of the [[Anime/GaoGaiGar Goldion Hammer]]. During the 2nd season, she serves as Nanoha's {{rival}}, but after Hayate is saved by the TSAB, Vita's rivalry disappeared. Three years later, when Nanoha and Vita are assigned to a mission, Vita fails to protect Nanoha which nearly causes the latter's death; after this event, Vita swears to protect her.

By ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', she has become a combat instructor on Mid-Childa, and is one of the vice-captains of Hayate's Riot Force Six alongside Signum and is Nanoha's sub-commander in the [=StarS=] unit. Her callsign is [=StarS=] 2. She and her unit commander, Nanoha, train the four Forwards whom Vita help several times during the season unlike the other higher ranks. Vita plays a major part at the destruction of the Saint's Cradle as she destroys its engine.

In ''[=ViVid=]'', she helps Zafira training children and is a second teacher to Miura Rinaldi, whom she presumely taught ''Hammerschlag'' which is based of Vita's ''Tödlichschlag'', and ''Blazing Comet'' which is based of her ''Kometfliegen''. For the DSAA Inter-Middle Championship, Vita is one of Miura's second.

In ''Force'', Vita and Nanoha are members and combat instructors of Hayate's Special Duty Section Six and they train the eight Forwards[[note]]Subaru Nakajima, Teana Lanster, Erio Mondial, Caro Ru Lushe, Ginga Nakajima, Thoma Avenir, Lily-Strosek and Isis Egret[[/note]].
----
* ActionGirl: Vita is a skilled aerial knight and wields a mallet-shaped Armed Device named Graf Eisen.
* BadassAdorable: ''Oh boy.'' Probably even more [=moeGAR=] than Nanoha.
* BadassArmfold: Pictured above. And she does this several times in ''[=StrikerS=]''.
* BadassBoast: From ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'': "This is what Eisen and I are best at. You know that? Destroying and smashing. The Knight Vita of the Iron Hammer, and the Steel Count Graf Eisen. There's nothing in this world we can't destroy."
* BadassLongcoat: In ''Force'', she wears a red long coat with her uniform.
* BadassTeacher: Unlike Nanoha, Vita plays this trope straight as she helps the Forwards several times during missions. She saves Subaru from Teana's misshot and later helps the Forwards against Lutecia, Garyu and Agito.
* BerserkButton: Do NOT mess with her hat.
* TheBerserker: Vita appears constitutionally unable to retreat from a fight unless joining it or continuing it puts the other Wolkenritter or Hayate at risk. Her strategy in combat boils down to getting right up in someone's face and hitting them with Graf Eisen until they stop moving.
* BerserkerTears: While hunting Linker Cores after Hayate is hospitalized, as she's trying to deal with the very real possibility that Hayate might die. They also show up during the famous "White Devil" scene. Both cases (especially the former) are far more pronounced in the movie version.
* BigEater: Partly because of her being a Belkan knight, which tends to result in users having to eat more than Mid-Childian mages. However, she also eats a fair amount even when she was living with Hayate and not fighting, and claims that it's because she's growing.
* BigWeaponLittleWielder: Vita's magical hammer, Graf Eisen, has a "Gigantform" that causes Graf Eisen to become several times larger than its GlacierWaif wielder. Combined with her incredible strength, Vita boasts that there's nothing she and Graf Eisen can't destroy.
* BloodKnight: [[AvertedTrope Averted]]. Despite her aggressive attitude, she's not really interested in battles, and she calls Signum, Fate and Einhart "battle maniacs" in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny''.
* BraidsOfAction: She has two braids and is a hell of an ActionGirl.
* BringMyRedJacket: Tends to get badly wounded and bleed all over her red Knight Armor. In fact, she's the poster girl of the trope.
* BunniesForCuteness: She had a stuffed rabbit whose design can be seen on her hat.
* ButtMonkey: In ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent INNOCENT]]''. Everyone assumes she lost to Nanoha, even though she never did, much like in canon. She is curb-stomped by Stern, she has to work with Nanoha in the Sky Dodge game despite Vita doesn't like her, and she's almost taken down by Stern again in Sky Dodge.
* CodeName: [=StarS 2=] in Riot Force 6, and Aggressor 2 in Special Duty Section 6.
* CoolBigSis: To Agito and Rein. Agito calls her even "Anego" which means "big sister", but it can also mean "boss".
* CreepyCrosses: She has crosses emblems all over her hat and on the collar of her ElegantGothicLolita costume.
* CryIntoChest: Her first order of business after [[spoiler: being resurrected]] in ''A's'' was to take part in a BadassCreed with the rest of the Wolkenritter. Her second order of business was to hug Hayate and let out every last bit of emotion she'd kept pent up since the whole Book of Darkness incident started.
* CuteBruiser: She's a cute little girl who fights with a hammer that can grow really, really, really big.
* CynicalMentor: To the trio in ''Force'' in Chapter 18. She basically tells them she is training them so they don't drag down the main team and wasn't keen on the idea of working with them until Nanoha convinced her due to their instability.
* DeathGlare: Gives one to Nanoha when she encounters her when she's visiting Hayate in the hospital.
* {{Determinator}}: She is quite possibly an even bigger determinator than Nanoha, or at least it ''looks'' more impressive since she has [[MadeOfIron insane endurance]]. Near the end of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', she is fighting through hordes of combat machines, [[spoiler:getting stabbed right through the chest]], and upon realizing that they was the same type of drones that [[spoiler:injured Nanoha]] she completely flips and wrecks them all. Then she arrives at the ships engine heavily injured, tries to destroy it with no success, only to be greeted by automatic defense systems. And her response?
--> '''Vita:''' "[[BringIt Bring it on.]]"
** Then she keeps on trying until her weapon literally shatters from overuse of her [[CastFromHitPoints Full Drive]], and her body finally collapses from exhaustion and pain. Fortunately, [[SugarWiki/MomentOfAwesome it was enough]].
* DramaticPause: Vita's attacks. Most notably her ''Raketenhammer''.
--> '''Vita''': "'''RAKETEN-...'''(flying to the enemy before hitting) '''...HAMMER!'''"
* ElegantGothicLolita: Thanks to Hayate, who designed her costume.
* EstablishingCharacterMoment: In her first battle against Nanoha, she's ChewingTheScenery with her LargeHam, and defeated Nanoha by breaking Raising Heart and her Barrier Jacket with UnstoppableRage.
* EvilLaugh: Parodied in ''[[RealTrailerFakeMovie Iryou Shoujo Medical Shamal]]''.
* {{Expy}}: Graf Eisen, of the [[Anime/GaoGaiGar Goldion Hammer]].
* ExtraOreDinary: ''Schwalbefliegen''[=/=]''Schwalbenflug'' and ''Kometfliegen''.
* FieryRedhead: She has a ''very'' hot temper. Her hair turns orange when she's in Unison with Rein.
* FireForgedFriends: Unlike Signum, who viewed Fate as a WorthyOpponent, Vita was more hostile to Nanoha until they fought alongside each other against the Book of Darkness.
* FusionDance: With Reinforce Zwei.
* GirlsLoveStuffedAnimals: Her most treasured possession is her plush bunny.
* GlacierWaif: She's rather petite, but wields a giant hammer.
* GoodThingYouCanHeal: Tends to get fairly badly injured somewhat regularly, but manages to recover every time. However, in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', it's revealed that since she separated from Reinforce, it has been taking her longer and longer to heal.
* GoThroughMe: Tries pulling this on Nanoha and Fate to protect Hayate in the movie version of ''A's''. She gets scolded by Hayate for her efforts since Nanoha and Fate weren't doing anything wrong.
* GratuitousGerman: Both, Vita and Graf Eisen. While Vita's attacks are German compared to Signum's Japanese attack names, Graf Eisen has the most lines among the Belkan Devices of the Wolkenritter.
* HatDamage: Took some in the first episode of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'' from a Divine Buster. She [[BerserkButton didn't take it well]].
* HellishPupils: In ''The Movie 2nd A's'' whenever she's ''really'' pissed of.
* HiddenDepths: Vita has a rather vulgar and provocative speech pattern, but she has a hidden polite side. In ''The Gears of Destiny'', she uses ''[[UsefulNotes/JapaneseLanguage keigo]]'' when she speaks to Chrono. And only to him (she doesn't use such formalities with Hayate, unlike the other Wolkenritter and Reinforce).
* HumongousHeadedHammer: Vita's magical hammer, Graf Eisen, has a "Gigantform" that causes Graf Eisen to become several times larger than its GlacierWaif wielder. Combined with her incredible strength, Vita boasts that there's nothing she and Graf Eisen can't destroy.
* IdiotHair: A very long one.
* ImmortalImmaturity: Despite being as old as the other Wolkenritter and claiming to be an adult, Vita tends to act like a child. But in contrast to normal children, she prefers to play with senior citizens instead of children.
* ImplausibleDeniability: "I'm not glaring! I was born with eyes like these!" while giving Nanoha a DeathGlare.
* ImprobableWeaponUser: Graf Eisen is a ''croquet mallet'' and during ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'' and ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'' she frequently uses iron croquet balls as projectiles.
* InSeriesNickname: Agito calls her often "Anego" which can mean "big sister" or "boss", but Lutecia calls Vita like this, too.
* IntergenerationalFriendship: In general, she seems to enjoy the company of the elderly. Her main hobby back when she was living on Earth was playing croquet with senior citizens, and she got along very well with Midget Crowbel while serving as part of her security detail.
* ItWasAGift: Vita deeply loves her plush bunny, as it was a gift from Hayate.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: She can be irritable, blunt and often rude, but is intensely devoted to Hayate, and later, to Nanoha.
* JustAKid: Even after becoming aware of her [[ArtificialHuman true]] [[PersonOfMassDestruction nature]] and [[ReallySevenHundredYearsOld true age]], Nanoha still often treats her like a kid, addressing her as "Vita-[[UsefulNotes/JapaneseHonorifics chan]]", petting her on the head, and in one case carrying her in her arms when she's asleep, because she didn't want to wake her up, much to her annoyance.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: During her third encounter with Nanoha, she decides to retreat because as she cannot absorb her Linker Core again, fighting her would be a waste of energy.
* TheLancer: To Signum among the Wolkenritter, and to Nanoha in the [=StarS=] Unit.
* LargeHam: Vita is the loudest ''Wolkenritter'' and tends to scream every [[CallingYourAttacks attack name]]. Graf Eisen is a mild example, compared to its master and Laevatein.
* LastNameBasis: Like Signum, she calls Fate "Testarossa".
* [[LetsYouAndHimFight Let's You And Her Fight]]: Attacks Fate during Fate's route in ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable Battle of Aces]]'' while mistaking her for a Memory. She does this again in ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable Gears of Destiny]]'' this time with Arf, again thinking she's a Dark Fragment.
* LimitBreak: ''Gigantschlag'' in ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable A's Portable]]'', which deals 45% basic damage in the second game, that is average.
* LittleMissBadass: She's smaller than most other characters, but she kicks ass.
* LittleMissSnarker: She's quite willing to point out when she thinks someone is being stupid, especially with regards to the forwards.
* MadeOfIron: There's a reason both of her titles contain the word "iron" in them. She may very well have the most endurance and fortitude out of all the main characters. Best exemplified during the finale of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'' when she was throwing around attacks that were CastFromHitPoints for an hour-and-a-half while she had a hole straight through her chest.
* MightyGlacier: To quote her and Graf Eisen - "There is nothing in the world we can't destroy". While her movement speed isn't bad, her attacks are slow and heavy and she has no dodging skills to speak of. One of the reasons is her Knight Armor, which provides maximum protection, but less agile maneuvering like the Knight Clothings of the other knights.
* MyFavoriteShirt: Vita is ''very'' protective of her Barrier Jacket's hat, due to it bearing the likeness of her plush bunny and having been designed by Hayate. When Nanoha ended up getting it singed in the first episode of ''A's'', Vita flew into a blind rage and beat her half to death.
* MyGreatestFailure: Vita is haunted by an incident between ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'' and ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'' in which, while the two were on a mission together, Nanoha was taken by surprise, injured and nearly crippled, partly the result of her having [[HeroicRROD overextended herself]]. Vita then dedicates herself to protecting Nanoha about as much as she is dedicated to protecting Hayate.
-->'''Vita:''' I was with her when we left... I should have noticed before anyone else. That day... that memory... I'll never let it happen again.
* MythicalMotifs: She seems to be inspired by the MoonRabbit. She's an immortal little girl wielding a mallet and has rabbit heads on her hat.
* PlayingWithFire: Not her main power, but Vita has ''Flammeschlag'' ("Flame Blow") as a fiery variation of ''Tödlichschlag'' which causes extra flaming effect after hitting the target. It's also the attack that caused Nanoha's infamous OutOfTheInferno scene.
* PowerDyesYourHair: In Unison with Rein, her hair becomes orange.
* RankUp: She's a Second Lieutenant in ''[=StrikerS=]'' and is a First Lieutenant in either ''[=ViVid=]'' or ''Force''.
* RelatedInTheAdaptation: Played for laughs in ''INNOCENTS'' when it's jokingly suggested that Noroi Usagi (her stuffed bunny) is actually Sacred Heart's ancestor.
* TheRival: To Nanoha in ''A's''.
* SayMyName: "Hayate!"
* ScreamingWarrior: Dear god. Try to count the times when she ''doesn't'' scream while attacking or [[CallingYourAttacks calling her attacks]] with her LargeHam.
* SergeantRock: More critical of the Forwards' performance than Nanoha is, and occasionally suggests that Nanoha is being too lenient, but cares for their development. Also when Vita tells you to shield, ''you shield'', or else get hammersmashed.
* SignatureMove: ''Raketenhammer''.
* SirSwearsALot: Vita might be the worst character regarding this trope. Due to her hot-tempered nature, this happens a lot.
* TemptingFate: She guilty for this in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'' and ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]''. Suposedly she wises up in ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]''
** In her second fight with Nanoha, Nanoha surrounds her with a lot of Magic Missile and she perform [[BeehiveBarrier Panzerhindernis]] to protect herself while saying: "Are you stupid?! There's no way you control all these bullets!" A moment later, [[ImprobableAimingSkills the bullets start speeding up]], and the Panzerhindernis slowly took damage. [[SarcasmMode Good job]].
** In her third encounter with Nanoha, she was using Eisen Geheul to distract Nanoha, giving her time to escape her. After a while, she muses, "OK, this is far enough...." Cue Nanoha charging up [[WaveMotionGun Divine Buster]]. [[spoiler: She was saved by a third party intercepting the beam and binding Nanoha.]]
** In ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', "I'm almost there. I still have cartridges. I'm fine. It'll be easy." Cue {{Elite|Mook}} and {{invisibil|ity}}e-type {{Mecha Mook|s}} stabbing her InTheBack and her having to prove just how big a {{Determinator}} she is.
** Several episode earlier, she boasts, "The Knight of the Iron Hammer, Vita, and the Steel Count, Graf Eisen. There's nothing in this world we can't destroy." [[spoiler:Yes, she manages to live the reputation,]] But it is clear that [[DeterminedDefeatist she was]] [[GameBreakingInjury on her last legs]] [[spoiler:[[CombatBreakdown while acomplishing it.]]]]
* ThisIsADrill: Graf Eisen's Raketenform und Zerstörungsform.
* TinyTyrannicalGirl: She's the youngest-looking Wolkenritter and by far the most ill-tempered. She was especially bad during her past in Ancient Belka, shunning the other Guardian Knights and especially Reinforce for their crappy lot in life, something she now regrets for being so unfairly cold to the latter in particular.
* TomboyWithAGirlyStreak: Vita is loud, brash, aggressive and has a kind of a filthy mouth. But she loves her plush bunny.
* TookALevelInKindness: During much of her existence, she refused to let the other Wolkenritter get close to her, and was almost constantly angry and rebellious out of combat. After her HeelFaceTurn, her temper and manners are less than perfect, but she cares for those close to her.
* TraumaButton: Chapter 2 of the ''[=StrikerS=]'' manga revealed that the sight of ruined battlefields cause her to flashback to [[MyGreatestFailure when Nanoha was nearly killed]]. Since she never shows any signs of this during the show proper, it can be assumed that she either underwent therapy in the intervening years or somehow overcame her PTSD through sheer force of will.
-->'''Vita:''' Every time I see the ruins of a recent battle... I remember something that I'd rather forget.
* {{Tsundere}}: Harsh type. In one scene, she reassures Shamal that she "won't make a certain worrywart Knight of the Lake who's terrible at cooking cry".
* TsurimeEyes: You can tell that she's not really nice just by looking at her eyes.
* UnstoppableRage: When Nanoha takes a shot at Vita, she only manages to [[BerserkButton blow away her hat]]. Vita proceeds to beat her within an inch of her life.
** She had the exact same reaction when she realized that the Type IV Gadget Drones were the ones responsible for [[MyGreatestFailure nearly killing Nanoha]].
** Finally stopped in ''Force'' by [[spoiler:Curren Hückebein. After making her debut by impaling Hayate a furious Vita rushes at her with the Strike Cannon. Curren loses her sword, Vita loses the fight]].
* WholeCostumeReference: The author being a ''VideoGame/SuperRobotWars'' fan, Vita's costume and even some of her powers are pretty much reproductions of the [[VideoGame/SuperRobotWarsOriginalGeneration Alteissen]].
* YouMonster: Vita calls Nanoha a "devil" in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]''. Nanoha does not disagree with her.

!!Shamal — Knight of the Lake, Hand of the Healing Wind
!!!Voiced by: Creator/RyokaYuzuki (Japanese), Creator/ShelbyLindley (English)
!!!Voiced by: Alexandra Haefelin (Klarwind)
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/shamal_y_3303.jpg]]

The [[TeamMom Mother]] of the three, taking care of [[YamatoNadeshiko most house-related chores]], [[LethalChef except cooking]]. She doesn't usually take part in combat, but she has [[HealingHands healing power]], and her communication and portal magic means she generally acts as MissionControl. She also makes most of the cartridges for Vita and Signum. Her Armed Device, ''Klarwind'', resides in her rings.

In ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', she's mostly relegated to the background as a [[TheMedic magical doctor]] on Mid-Childa. Like the other Wolkenritter, Shamal is part of Hayate's Riot Force 6 and is the chief doctor. She and Zafira fail to protect the Long Arch from Otto, Deed and the Gadget Drones, but later they recover from their injuries and arrest Otto.

In ''[=ViVid=]'', she has taught Zafira's disciple, Miura Rinaldi, some of her skills, but it's not mentioned what exactly. She, Hayate and the rest of the family watch Miura's matches in the DSAA Inter-Middle Championship, and later Shamal nurses Vivio after her match with Miura who defeated her.

In ''Force'', she is a member and chief doctor of Hayate's Special Duty Section 6.
----
* AdaptationalBadass [[BadassAdorable Adorable]]: In ''[[RealTrailerFakeMovie Iryou Shoujo Medical Shamal]]'', where she's an adorable child who can transform into a stereotypical MagicalGirl, but also has an [[OlderAlterEgo Adult Mode]] with a very destructive WaveMotionGun.
* AscendedExtra: Shamal is the main character in the RealTrailerFakeMovie ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yY0fzHSkb2Y Iryou Shoujo Medical Shamal]]'' with Nanoha and Fate as her ''{{Fairy Companion}}s'', and Hayate/[[Creator/KanaUeda Kanae]] Kagurai as her foster mother. She is called [[Creator/RyokaYuzuki Yuzuko]] Kagurai in this series, and her alter ego is called "Medical Shamal".
* BarrierWarrior: Excellent at creating barriers for various purposes and blocking attacks.
* BewareTheNiceOnes: Despite being the most soft-spoken member of the Wolkenritter, Shamal is still a warrior forged on the battlefields of the Belkan Wars like the rest of them. Anyone failing to acknowledge her as a major threat (like Nanoha in ''A's'' and Otto in ''[=StrikerS=]'') is in for a very nasty surprise. Also, as Nanoha mentions in Sound Stage M3, she can be very scary when she wants to be, such as when her patients don't do as she says.
* BlowYouAway: ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable The Battle Of Aces]]'' video game reveals a variety of wind spells she could use when she needs to fight.
* ChekhovsSkill: Her ability to steal Linker Cores from a distance was vital to the plan for destroying the Book of Darkness
* CombatMedic: While Shamal normally keeps out of combat, she's ''hardly'' helpless in other fields. She has the ability to ''stick her hand through you and rip out your magic''. From a ''mile'' away. Or at least she did back when they still had the Book of Darkness.
** ''Reflection'' confirms that she's still fully capable of using that spell (in the movie continuity anyways) while at the same time revealing that it has other uses... like taking out a regenerating HumongousMecha by crushing its CPU.
* ConspicuousTrenchcoat: {{Subverted}} -- she tries to disguise herself when spying on Nanoha and Fate, but Dr. Ishida recognizes her immediately.
* CoolShades: Combined with the ConspicuousTrenchcoat above.
* DistaffCounterpart: To Yuuno in ''A's''
* DrivesLikeCrazy: Implied. At one point, Vita and Signum hear her parking a car. Vita wonders if it's Hayate, but Signum comments on how the driver is having difficulty parking it, and concludes that it's Shamal.
* {{Expy}}: She looks like what [[Anime/NeonGenesisEvangelion Ritsuko Akagi]] might look like if she were in the Nanoha-verse. This is especially apparent with her first appearance in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', when she's wearing what appears to be a white doctor's coat. Considering the number of mecha anime shout outs in ''Nanoha'', it could be intentional.
* TheFace: Of the Wolkenritter. Look at the contrasts between her and her fellows: the most feminine, the one who can't cook, the TeamMom. She's also MissionControl because her magic is focused on communication and teleportation.
* FeminineWomenCanCook: {{Inverted}} -- Shamal is the only member of the cast who is shown to be a [[LethalChef bad cook]], while {{Action Girl}}s Nanoha, Fate and Hayate are quite skilled at cooking.
* FirstNameBasis: She refers to friends by their first name. There was one notable exception with Fate in ''A's'', where she called her "Testarossa-chan", but she changed it later to "Fate-chan". Even in ''The Movie 2nd A's'', she never calls her by her last name.
* GemstoneAssault: Klarwind's Pendelform turns the jewels of the Ringeform into pendulums which can create portals, find Linker Cores, and bind opponents. It can be used in close combat when necessary.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: When [[OlderAlterEgo Adult Mode]] [[AscendedExtra Medical Shamal]] fires her [[WaveMotionGun Shamal Beam]], her right eye is glowing in pink. [[VideoGame/MeltyBlood Arcueid]] [[ActorAllusion Brunestud]], anyone?
* HealingHands: Her speciality is healing. She's even called "Hand of the Healing Wind".
* HealingWinds: "Healing Wind" is literally the name of Shamal's ultimate healing spell in the movie continuity. When Shamal casts it, a small cyclone appears around her that rapidly heals wounds and fatigue of all allies in the area, as well as fixing up their protective spells. Shamal has a lot of other wind- and healing-based spells, to the point that one of her titles is roughly translated as "Healing Hand of the Wind".
* ImprobableWeaponUser:
** Canonically, her weapons are rings whose gemstones can be used as pendulum-like weapons.
** As Medical Shamal, she carries a giant syringe that fires Divine Buster-like beams.
* IronicFear: Despite being the Knight of the Lake, she is afraid of swimming. Well, her powers have nothing to do with water either.
* LethalChef: This was originally an InformedFlaw - on one of the two occasions the Wolkenritter actually taste her cooking, Signum and Vita admit that it's not as good as Hayate's cooking, but still not bad, while Hayate likes it. It wasn't until the PSP fighting game, released four years after her introduction, that we received [[http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y191/Liinna/Nanoha/Hayate/1264208642230.png visual confirmation of her cooking skills.]]
* LimitBreak: Her Linker Core Removal technique in ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable A's Portable]]'', which deals 60% basic damage in the second game, that is the strongest Full Drive Burst alongside Precia's.
* MissionControl: Shamal usually stands outside of the battlefield and observes the territory while supporting the other knights. She also does this for Riot Force 6 during the second mission.
* MundaneUtility: In one scene of A's she uses Klarwind to phone Hayate's house. According to [[AllThereInTheManual information with the DVDs]], she has a cell phone, but left it at home that time.
* OlderAlterEgo: In ''[[RealTrailerFakeMovie Iryou Shoujo Medical Shamal]]'', she's the main character Yuzuko Kagurai, but she's a child in that version. One of her MagicalGirl forms is an Adult Mode like Vivio.
* ProperLady: She has strong parallels to a YamatoNadeshiko. In addition to her loyalty to Hayate, she is kind, soft-spoken obedient, and, like the others, a knight with magic powers and the will to use them.
* ProperTightsWithASkirt: With her military uniform.
* RingOfPower: Klarwind has the form of a set of four rings, two in each hand. Its Standby Form has the form of golden rings, its Ringeform adds two blue jewels on both index finger rings and two green jewels on both ring finger rings.
* SecretIdentity: In ''[[RealTrailerFakeMovie Iryou Shoujo Medical Shamal]]'', [[Creator/RyokaYuzuki Yuzuko]] Kagurai's magical alter ego is Medical Shamal.
* TheSmartGirl: Of the Wolkenritter.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Klarer Wind or Klarwind? It's officially the latter. [[GratuitousGerman Klarer Geheul]] or Klargeheul?
* SquishyWizard: Shamal is the least combat-orientated knight.
** In ''VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable'', where she has the most powerful FinishingMove alongside Precia's, but Shamal's defense is below average, her moveset is not very good and she's a low-tier character, but she's very useful in Time Attack Mode.
* TaremeEyes: Pretty much the nicest Wolkenritter.
* TeamMom: Of the Wolkenritter.
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: The girly girl to Signum's tomboy. In ''[[RealTrailerFakeMovie Mahou Kazoku Lyrical Wolken]]'', Signum is the ''father'' figure while Shamal is the mother figure.
* {{Understatement}}: When giving the Forwards a summary of the first season, she said that Fate was "going through some complications with her family at the time."
* VillainsOutShopping: She is often seen literally shopping with Hayate. In the manga, it is shown that she spends her free time chatting with the neighborhood wives.
* WaveMotionGun: In ''[[RealTrailerFakeMovie Iryou Shoujo Medical Shamal]]'', Adult Mode Medical Shamal has the ''Shamal Beam'', a pink massive beam which looks like a Divine Buster. The weapon is... a giant syringe.
* WindIsGreen: Her Knight Clothing, casting circles and even many of her casual clothes are green.
[[/folder]]

[[folder:Zafira]]
!!Zafira — Shielding Guardian Beast, Blue Wolf
!!!Voiced by: Creator/KazuyaIchijo (Japanese), Jonathan Meza (English)
[[quoteright:300:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/zafira_y_4252.jpg]]

Bit of an oddball -- he's not only TheOneGuy of the Wolkenritter and Hayate's family, he's a NonHumanSidekick. His specialty is said to be a BarrierWarrior. He forms a rivalry and later friendship with Arf.

In ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', Zafira is a member of Hayate's Riot Force 6 and he apparently ends up as something of a big canine babysitter for Vivio, and is only seen in his humanoid form once, in the final panel of Chapter 15. He and Shamal fail to protect the Long Arch from Otto, Deed and the Gadget Drones, but later they recover from their injuries and arrest Otto.

In ''Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaVivid'', he trains children in Strike Arts. One of his best pupils, Miura, is set to compete against Vivio in the DSAA Inter-Middle Championship. Zafira's pupil ranks very high for a newcomer, being able to defeat the Inter-Middle veterans and tournament favorites Micaiah Chevelle and Erie Stout, and wins against Nanoha's daughter, Vivio.

In ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]'', Zafira is a member of Hayate's Special Duty Section 6... but he has actually to do something, yet.
----
* {{Animorphism}}: He's able to change between a wolfman and a wolf.
* AscendedExtra: In Zafira's route of ''VideoGame/TheBattleOfAces'', he wins against all four (Dark Piece) Wolkenritter (with Shamal being the only original one), and all three Materials (including extra stages), not to mention that he's the only character who fights all Materials. He has the lowest rank among the Wolkenritter, and later in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'' he's upgraded into an AIBreaker.
* TheBigGuy: Of the Wolkenritter.
* BigOlEyebrows: This guy has really thick eyebrows.
* CounterAttack: While everyone in ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable The Battle Of Aces]]'' has one in melee range, Zafira also has one in ranged mode. Well, later in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', he is not the only one[[note]]Einhard, the Liese Twins[[/note]].
* DemotedToExtra: Loses some of his screentime in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'' but really gets hit hard in the Sound Stages. In the first and second sound stages of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'' and ''[=StrikerS=]'' he's either away for most of the story or absent for some reason. On the other hand, in ''Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaVivid'' where he's the trainer of Miura [[SpellMyNameWithAnS Rinaldi/Linard]], he appears more frequently and talks more than in his entire screentime on ''[=StrikerS=]''. Still a support character but with a much better treatement.
* DynamicEntry: How he "introduced" himself to Arf. He also tried this to [[spoiler:the Masked Men who were about to kill Vita]], but failed.
* EvilIsHammy: He's a villain in ''[[RealTrailerFakeMovie Iryou Shoujo Medical Shamal]]'', where he's not only more talkative than usual, but also hammier.
* ExtraOreDinary: ''Hagane no Kubiki'' means ''Steel Yoke'', and the blades are made of magical steal.
* {{Familiar}}: [[InsistentTerminology Insists]] on being called a "Guardian Beast", to which Arf retorts that it makes no difference. However, unlike Familiars, he has no contract and is not dependent on Hayate to exist.
* FriendToAllChildren: Especially pronounced in Sound Stage M4, when he teaches children martial arts, and reveals that he gave rides to Hayate and Nanoha in the past, around the time Hayate was practicing walking and Nanoha was in rehabilitation.
* GentleGiant: He's one of the tallest characters and he's not really aggressive until the situation calls for it. Outside of combat, he's calm and friendly.
* HotbloodedSideburns: Despite what the name implies, he's fairly cool-headed.
* ICanStillFight: In the final battle of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'', he goes out to fight with Vice, despite having been hospitalized for the week since the attack on Riot Force 6.
* AnIcePerson: ''Hagane no Kubiki'' has shades of this.
* InSeriesNickname: Vivio and Lutecia call him Zaffy, as well as the fans.
* LargeHam: For someone [[TheQuietOne who doesn't talk that much]] he's pretty loud in battle and rivals Vita in volume.
* LimitBreak: ''Hagane no Kubiki'' in ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable A's Portable]]'', which deals 40% basic damage in the second game, that is the weakest Full Drive Burst alongside Yuuno and Arf's.
* LittleBitBeastly: His humanoid form has prominent ''kemonomimi''.
* MegatonPunch: He is able to charge magical energy in his fists to deliver very strong punches.
* MightyGlacier: He has strong attacks, but he's rather slow.
* TheOneGuy: A reason why he didn't go to the bathhouse with the others in the first ''A's'' Sound Stage, because he wouldn't spend time together with them anyway. The other reason was someone had to guard the house.
* PreciousPuppy: His form in the ''A's'' epilogue.
* TheQuietOne: Erio and Caro don't even realize that he ''can'' talk until their second mission. Even Hayate notes that he doesn't speak often. And then there are episodes where he doesn't talk at all.
* RedEyesTakeWarning: He's not evil though, but he's a beast.
* ScreamingWarrior: Like Vita, he tends to scream everytime he attacks. This is especially blatant in his wolf form, as it seems he can only cast ''Hagane no Kubiki'' with screams, while in his humanoid form he doesn't need to scream.
* ShipTease: Subtle with Arf. She's his DistaffCounterpart, she feeds him with meat in the ''[=StrikerS=]'' manga, and Arf appears in his route in ''VideoGame/TheBattleOfAces''; the only three other routes in which she appears are Nanoha, Fate and Chrono's. In Fate and Chrono's cases, she's a part of their family, in Nanoha's case, she appears alongside with Fate. In Zafira's case, there is no given reason, except maybe this trope.
* SignatureMove: ''Hagane no Kubiki''[[note]]Steel Yoke[[/note]]. It's not only powerful, but also very flexible.
* SpearCounterpart: To Arf, made especially blatant when they fight in their animal forms.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: His name is often written as "Zafila".
* SternTeacher: Has shades of this in his instruction of Miura in ''[=ViVid=]'', as he notes she will get quite the talking-to [[spoiler:after she barely wins her first round despite losing most of her life in the opening moves]].
* TheStoic: Possibly even more so than Signum.
** NotSoStoic: [[spoiler:When attacking the masked men after Signum and Shamal have been absorbed]]
* TalkingAnimal: When in wolf form.
* TeamPet: For the Yagami family and for the entire Riot Force 6 because he's always in his wolf form. The only time we see his humanoid form in ''[=StrikerS=]'' was in the last chapter of the supplementary manga, a year ''after'' Riot Force 6 was disbanded. Even his official ID card has his wolf form as its photo.
* WolfMan: Unlike Arf, he prefers going around in this wolf unless he's teaching children martial arts. In ''[=StrikerS=]'' you won't see him in human form at all.

!!Reinforce
[[folder:Reinforce Eins]]
!!Reinforce Eins — The Will of the Book of Darkness / The Blessed Wind
!!!Voiced by: Creator/SanaeKobayashi
!!!Voiced by: Alexandra Haefelin (Book of Darkness/[=NachtWal=])
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/reinforce_eins.jpg]]
-> "''I'll give you a new name. I won't let people call you 'the Book of Darkness' or the 'Cursed Tome'. I won't let them. All the time, I've thought a perfect name for you. So strong and supportive. The 'Blessed Wind'... blessing us all. 'Reinforce'.''\
-- '''Hayate'''

Formerly known as the Book of Darkness, and before that, the Book of the Night Sky until the defense program, also known as ''[=NachtWal=]'' (movie only), was corrupted and the book's entire purpose changed. After Hayate is absorbed into the Book of Darkness, she manages to reach out to her, giving her a new name. Reinforce sacrifices herself for Hayate's sake after enabling the Wolkenritter to live on outside of her. Generally believed to be the most powerful character in the franchise (at least in the canon timeline).
----
* EleventhHourSuperpower: In her route of ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable The Battle of Aces]]'' [[spoiler: Hayate acts as a Unison Device for her]]!
* AdaptationPersonalityChange: In the main series, [[EmotionlessGirl she kept her emotions on a very tight leash]], presumably as a coping mechanism. The movie continuity dropped this aspect of her character, having her far more open with her emotions to the point of flying into a rage near the end of her fight with Nanoha.
* AffectionateNickname: Levi the Slasher calls her "Kurohane" ("blackwing").
* AllYourPowersCombined / PowerCopying: Can use techniques from the mages whose Linker Cores the Book of Darkness absorbed and turn them into even bigger versions of the original. Demonstrated when she cast [[WaveMotionGun Starlight Breaker]] at Nanoha and Fate, who promptly fled as far away as they could, because the explosion it created was as almost as large as Uminari City itself.
* AntiVillain: She doesn't want to [[spoiler:kill her masters]] and to destroy worlds.
* ArtEvolution: Justified, as the the art style of the franchise got better during the years. But the most drastic change are her eyes. In the ''A's'' and in the ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable Portable continuity]]'', she's portrayed with emotionless eyes with no light reflection. Since ''[=StrikerS=] Sound Stage 3'', she's portrayed with light reflection and more life in her eyes. ''The Movie 2nd A's'' also removes the wings on her head and adds two more small wings on her back.
* AscendedFanon[[invoked]]: After fans called her "Eins" to distinguish from Zwei.
** She called herself Eins in ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable The Battle of Aces]]'' when she and Hayate discussed that a second Reinforce will be born. She does this again in a promotion video for the ''The Movie 2nd A's'', and in the ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yY0fzHSkb2Y Iryou Shoujo Medical Shamal]]'' RealTrailerFakeMovie. In the other RealTrailerFakeMovie ''[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmgzRbZu4M8 Mahou Kazoku Lyrical Wolken]]'', she is also called Eins.
** ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent INNOCENT]]'' has [[http://i.imgur.com/8CnfzR5.jpg another instance.]]
** She is frequently called Eins in the DVDCommentary of ''The Movie 2nd A's'' and in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'' drama [=CDs=].
* BerserkerTears: Right after her awakening. In the movie, they don't stop until Hayate regains control.
* BigBad: Technically the main "villain" of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]''. [[RousseauWasRight Technically.]] But ''[[SuperpoweredEvilSide NachtWal]]'' fits this definitely and its confirmed that [[spoiler: [=NachtWal=] is the cause of the eternal cycle of destruction the Book is best known for.]]
** She's also the president of the villains (including Signum, Vita and Zafira) in ''[[RealTrailerFakeMovie Iryou Shoujo Medical Shamal]]''. Amusingly, she's the TokenGoodTeammate.
* BroughtDownToNormal: The option presented in the PSP games [[spoiler:as she started slowly but surely losing her powers as a consequence of being separated from the defense program and by the time of the [[VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny 2nd game]] she's considerably weaker, still a capable mage but nowhere close to the titanic powerhouse she used to be]].
* ButNowIMustGo: [[spoiler:To prevent [=NachtWal=]'s return, Reinforce sacrifices her life, so the cycle of darkness can finally be broken.]]
* CastingAShadow: ''Diabolic Emission'' is city-sized black sphere and ''Schwarze Wirkung'' is an ElementalPunch.
* CatchPhrase: "Yes, my Master"[[note]]Hai, waga Aruji[[/note]] or just "My Master"[[note]]Waga Aruji[[/note]]. She says this so often in the various media, it's basically her CatchPhrase.
* ChainPain: In ''The Movie 2nd A's'', she uses [[http://i.imagebanana.com/img/6bodozhw/reinforcepimpchains.gif Arf's bind.]]
* CurbStompBattle: The only character so far who has given Nanoha this treatment, not only [[NoSell withstanding Nanoha's best attacks without batting an eye]], but also giving her a very hard beating.
* DarkIsNotEvil: At some point in her long existence, she was corrupted for evil purposes and thus has no control over her actions. Before that, she was simply a tool to gather various magical knowledge.
* EarlyBirdCameo: In TheMovie, Reinforce appears briefly two, three times before her actual appearance.
%%* ElementalPunch: ''[[CastingAShadow Schwarze Wirkung]]''.
* EmotionlessGirl: [[SubvertedTrope Subverted]] in ''A's'', she showed almost no emotion before her HeelFaceTurn, but she still cried. [[AvertedTrope And other adaptations drop her emotionless part completely]].
* {{Expy}}: Silver hair, red eyes with HellishPupils, and black wings. Just like [[Manga/RozenMaiden Suigintou]].
* ExtremityExtremist: Only uses her hands in melee combat, rarely her feet.
%%* FacialMarkings: When she's controlled by [=NachtWal=].
* FashionableAsymmetry: One of her stockings is short, the other is long.
%%* FlechetteStorm / ReverseShrapnel: Her ''Blutiger Dolch''/''Bloody Dagger'' spell can be used as both.
%%* FusionDance: With Hayate.
* GoOutWithASmile: [[spoiler:In ''A's'' episode 13, when she's deleted by Nanoha, Fate and the Wolkenritter and [[PreSacrificeFinalGoodbye says goodbye to Hayate]]. In TheMovie, she smiles even happier than in the TV version.]]
* GoodAllAlong: She never wanted to harm people by herself. Her whole system was corrupted.
* GoodOldFisticuffs: Her melee attacks in ''The Battle Of Aces'' involve... punching people stupid. This was previously seen in ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', where she punched through [[spoiler:Nanoha's]] shield. With her bare hands.
* GoodWingsEvilWings: Reinforce has black angel wings. In TheMovie, Reinforce has six wings, not four, on her back. The wings on her head are removed there.
* HellishPupils: In the TV series and in TheMovie. In TheMovie, her pupils disappear when [[spoiler:her system is reprogrammed by Hayate]].
* HeroicSuicide:
** [[spoiler:To prevent Hayate's life from being threatened again, and to enable the Wolkenritter to exist outside of the book]].
** Defied in ''The Battle Of Aces'', where, depending on the story path, [[spoiler:Signum, Vita, or Hayate are having none of Reinforce's plan to absorb the Dark Pieces and sacrifice herself. Then again, even if the sacrifice does not take place, Reinforce does not have much time left]].
* ICannotSelfTerminate: [[spoiler:Asks Nanoha and Fate to seal her away]].
* ImageSong: ''Snow Rain'', both the original and ''version Eins'' from the movie (only the latter is actually sung by Creator/SanaeKobayashi).
* InSpiteOfANail: In ''The Battle Of Aces'', [[spoiler:Reinforce realizes that she cannot serve as Hayate's Unison Device forever, and asks Hayate to make a new one. She and Hayate are both aware, although neither says anything to the other, that she will disappear in the relatively near future]].
* InSeriesNickname: "Rein" is actually the nickname of Zwei, but Eins is called this at least on two occasions. In ''[=StrikerS=]'', Vita refers her as the "first Rein". In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', Unison Hayate calls her Rein when they are about to fight [[BigBad U-D]].
* TheJuggernaut: As an enemy, she was completely unstoppable.
* LastNameBasis: In the ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable Portable]]'' continuity, she calls Fate by her last name. Probably influenced by Signum.
* TheLawOfDiminishingDefensiveEffort: Subverted, as she has no qualms with using external barriers, even for attacks that can't really hurt her.
* LimitBreak: ''Yaten no Ikazuchi'' in ''[[VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable A's Portable]]'', which deals 50% basic damage in the second game, that is above average.
* MadeOfIron: In ''A's'', where Nanoha injures her only a little bit. In ''The Movie 2nd A's'', she provides NoSell.
* MeaningfulRename: Hayate gives her her name to indicate her as one who supports others.
* MightyGlacier: Not fast enough to be a LightningBruiser, way too powerful and resilient to be a JackOfAllStats.
* MiniDressOfPower: Her Knight Clothing.
* MissionControl: Often serves this role in ''Battle Of Aces''.
* MysticalWhiteHair: She's the physical incarnation of a powerful WeaponOfMassDestruction.
* NighInvulnerability / NoSell: Reinforce doesn't appear to even notice some of the stuff Nanoha throws at her, and no-sells the rest.
* NotHerself: Played with. It's [=NachtWal=] who controlled her body in the battle, but Reinforce had still her own will and had limited control of herself.
* NumberOfTheBeast: The Book of Darkness has 666 pages.
* OverlyNarrowSuperlative: {{Subverted|Trope}} with "I'm the happiest magical tome in the world". ''It doesn't matter'' if there are more magical tomes going around or not, [[SincerityMode she said it when she felt the happiest]].
** Well, the Book of the Azure Sky, the Bible of Silver Cross, and the Tome of the Purple Sky exist; the former two being canon.
* PersonOfMassDestruction[=/=]WeaponOfMassDestruction: She fits the trope more than any other character in this show. This lady has killed planets before.
* PhysicalGod: For all intents and purposes. She was fully capable of [[EarthShatteringKaboom blowing up planets]] (something she had done countless times in the past) and {{No Sell}}ed everything that Nanoha threw at her. Not to mention the fact that she had ResurrectiveImmortality and the ability to [[PowerCopying copy spells]] and make them ''[[NoKillLikeOverkill bigger]]''.
* PileBunker: The movie adaptation of ''A's'' gave Reinforce a ''[[ClingyMacGuffin parasitic]]'' pile bunker as a physical representation of her corrupted Defense Program. [[AllThereInTheManual According to supplemental material]] it's an Ancient Belkan AntiArmor weapon modified from a wrist-mounted spear thrower.
* PlanetDestroyer: She has destroyed countless planets in the past. It's one of the main reasons why she's considered to be the strongest character in the series.
* PostFinalBoss: [[spoiler:Reinforce serves this role for the ''A's'' series after [=NachtWal=]'s death. While Reinforce is no longer actively trying to kill the heroes the fact is that, due to her corrupted programming, eventually she will be forced to create a new [=NachtWal=] and the cycle of death will begin all over again. The only way for the Book of Darkness incident to be over once and for all is for her to be sealed while there is no Defense Program to protect her in order to permanently prevent [=NachtWal=]'s resurrection.]]
* PurpleIsPowerful: She is the strongest canon character and her magic is dark purple. It switches to white after her defense program is destroyed.
* PurposelyOverpowered: During her story path in the ''Battle of Aces'' video game, [[spoiler:she becomes Unison Reinforce, i.e., Reinforce with Hayate acting as ''her'' [[FusionDance Unison Device]], giving her all the passive skills in the game]]. It's as broken as it sounds.
* RecurringElement: She's the second "girl with sad eyes" in the franchise. [[spoiler:Notably, she's the only one who never gets a happy ending due to her HeroicSuicide.]]
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Has blood red eyes.
* RedemptionDemotion: Much less broken on the good team in ''The Battle of Aces'' than when still on team evil. This is explained InUniverse as Hayate absorbing the majority of the Books magic after the Darkness of the Book of Darkness was destroyed leaving Reinforce broken [[spoiler: [[YourDaysAreNumbered and slowly dying.]]]]
* SchrodingersCast: Lives in ''VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable''. [[spoiler: [[InSpiteOfANail For a]] [[YourDaysAreNumbered while anyway.]]]]
* ShockAndAwe: The Book of Darkness has a spell called ''Hakai no Ikazuchi''[[note]]Thunder of Destruction[[/note]], which is cast by Shamal in episode 5. In ''VideoGame/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAsPortable'', Reinforce's FinishingMove is ''Yaten no Ikazuchi''[[note]]Thunder of Night Sky[[/note]].
* SignatureMove: ''Diabolic Emission''. She used it only once, but it is one of her few own spells she used in her battle against Nanoha and Fate. It's also a very unique and memorable spell and the only other mage who used this spell was Hayate.
* SnowMeansDeath: Coincidently, it was after Christmas.
* SupernaturalGoldEyes: As [[spoiler:Unison Reinforce]].
* TenderTears: She spends about half of her screen time crying for [[BerserkerTears various]] [[TearsOfJoy reasons]], starting from the moment she first shows up. Makes sense, given that her centuries long life has consisted of repeatedly being trapped in a book then destroying planets against her will.
* TentacleRope: Some of the beast whose Linker Cores were absorbed in the book have tentacles. She uses them on Nanoha and Fate.
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill:
** Uses a city-sized Starlight Breaker to try and kill Nanoha and Fate.
** The extremely '''HUGE''' drill she summons to kill Nanoha in TheMovie.
** During her Full Drive Burst in ''A's Portable'', she uses ''Diabolic Emission'', followed by a ''Yaten no Ikazuchi''.
* ThisIsADrill: In ''The Movie 2nd A's'', she summons a '''gigantic''' drill to kill a bound and helpless Nanoha. Nanoha can't even see it until it penetrates through the rock which is blocking her sight. [[spoiler:Fortunately, Fate slices it with Bardiche Assault's Zanber Form before it could hit Nanoha.]]
* TinMan: She repeatedly states that she's just a tool who has neither emotions nor heart. Unsurprisingly, Nanoha and Fate call bullshit on that since she says that while [[SandInMyEyes tears are streaming down her face]].
* TokenGoodTeammate: In ''[[RealTrailerFakeMovie Iryou Shoujo Medical Shamal]]'', where she's ironically the president of the villains (Signum, Vita and Zafira). Vita [[LampshadeHanging lampshades]] that she lacks evil tension.
* TooManyBelts: In evil mode.
* TooPowerfulToLive: [[spoiler:She is the most overpowered character in the series, but she doesn't survive the end of ''A's''.]]
* TragicHero: Due to the corrupted programming of the Book of Darkness, poor Reinforce was constantly killing her masters throughout the centuries and forcing her knights to continuously resurrect and be used as nothing but tools which leaves the poor girl [[BreakTheCutie a broken mess]]. After finally finding a master who appreciates and loves her [[spoiler:she only gets to spend a short time with her before she has to [[HeroicSuicide kill herself]] in order to prevent her programming from creating a new Defense Program that will kill Hayate. [[InSpiteOfANail Even in the A's Portable continuity]], wherein she survives , Reinforce is doomed to eventually die in a few months time due to the damage she sustained from destroying the Defense Program.]]
* TsurimeEyes: Goes with her StoicWoobie character.
* VocalEvolution: She had a emotionless voice in ''A's'', but in later adaptation her voice has more emotion. Justified, in other adaptations, Reinforce isn't so emotionless anymore.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: Subverted. She's technically the main "villain" of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]'', but she actually is not evil.
* WingedHumanoid: In battle, she has four big wings on her back. Unlike Hayate, Reinforce's wings are really on her back.
* WoobieDestroyerOfWorlds: She plays it straight, but also inverts this trope by being a woobie ''because'' she's a destroyer of worlds.
* YourDaysAreNumbered: [[spoiler:In ''The Battle of Aces'', it's said she doesn't have long to live in spite of having avoided sacrificing herself. This becomes obvious in ''The Gears of Destiny'' where she is {{nerf}}ed.]]

Hayate's Unison Device, who specializes in ice magic. She was created about two years after the Book of Darkness Incident, but is introduced in [[LastEpisodeNewCharacter the last scene of A's]]. She can fuse with Hayate, Vita or Signum to increase their power. She typically exists as a small flying girl a few inches tall, but can transform into a normal-sized young girl. Commonly known as "Rein". Possibly the only Device that has its own (Storage) Device: her ''Book of the Azure Sky'', created by Hayate and herself.

In ''[=StrikerS=]'', she's a member of Hayate's Riot Force 6 and acts as her right hand alongside Griffith Lowran. However, Reinforce Zwei always enters the battlefield on almost every mission. The other Unison Device, Agito, develops a rivalry with her, but the antagonistic part of it disappears after Agito was adopted into the Yagami family and both becoming sisters.

In ''[=ViVid=]'', she, Hayate and Agito create, after Lutecia Alpine and Einhart Stratos' request, the Hybrid-Intelligent Device ''Asteion'' for the latter, so Einhart can participate in the DSAA Inter-Middle Championship. Rein and the rest of the family watch the matches of Zafira's disciple, Miura Rinaldi, who defeats Nanoha and Fate's daughter, Vivio, in this tournament. She later appears in the Infinity Library to help Vivio and the other major Inter-Middle participants there.

In ''Force'', she is a member of Hayate's Special Duty Section 6 and is her right hand again. As a Unison Device, Reinforce Zwei acts as the BigSisterMentor to Lily-Strosek, Thoma Avenir's Reactor Plug.
----
* BadassAdorable: You can say that she's a better mage than ''Hayate''. Rein is one of the characters who is ''regularly'' on the battlefield in ''[=StrikerS=]''.
* BigSisterMentor: To Lily-Strosek in ''Force''.
* DeadGuyJunior: To Reinforce Eins.
* ElementalEyeColours: She has the [[MonochromaticEyes bluest eyes of the series]], emphasizing the childlike innocence of the character, as well as her magical nature (The first [[ArtificialHuman Unison]] [[PureMagicBeing Device]] created since the days of Ancient Belka) and her [[AnIcePerson affinity to ice]].
* FairyCompanion: Acts like one to Hayate.
* FashionableAsymmetry: Like Eins, one of her stockings is short, the other is long.
* FunSize: Usually. Being tiny conserves her magical power, but she can switch to the size of a young child when she needs to do housework.
** Despite her tiny size, other characters ''do'' take her seriously. This is kinda funny to watch.
* FusionDance: With Hayate, Signum and Vita.
* GenkiGirl: In contrast to the calm and more or less sad predecessor.
* GratuitousGerman: Some of her spells. She also used to call Hayate with "Meister".
* HealingHands: Demonstrated in the first ''[=StrikerS=]'' episode with Teana.
* HypercompetentSidekick: To Hayate. She helps Hayate to control her spells. Oddly enough, Rein is shown to be very competent by her own, even if Hayate isn't there. Additionally, unlike Agito who has trouble with supporting Zest, Rein is compatible with both, Vita and Signum.
* HypocriticalHumor: After Shamal points out that, like Vivio and Subaru, she once went from crying to smiling in a matter of minutes, Rein insists "[[ThirdPersonPerson Rein]] was an adult from the very beginning!"
* AnIcePerson: She seems to be specialized in ice magic.
* IdiotHair: Fitting for her childlike innocent character in contrast to Eins.
* ImprobableAge: She held the rank of Sergeant Major at the age of ''eight''. Partially excused due to the fact that she was BornAsAnAdult (relatively speaking).
* InSeriesNickname: Most people call her "Rein".
* KillerRabbit: Reinforce Zwei looks even less intimidating than the [[BadassAdorable rest of the cast]], but she can definitely hold her own, even without Hayate.
* LastEpisodeNewCharacter: Her first appearance is in the closing scene of the DistantFinale of ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs A's]]''.
* LightIsGood: Her magic color is white like Hayate's.
* NestedOwnership: She's a Unison Device with her own Storage Device.
* OlderThanSheLooks: Gradually becoming this, as she's 14 in ''Force'', but looks the same as she always did.
* PowerStereotypeFlip: She's far more outgoing and cheerful than one would normally suspect from an ice mage.
* TheRival: To [[PlayingWithFire Agito]] due to being both Unison Devices and surrogate sisters.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: She is also officially credited as "Reinforce II", but it's still pronounced "Reinforce Zwei".
* TaremeEyes: In contrast to her adult and dark counterpart Eins.
* ThirdPersonPerson: Distinguishing her from OlderThanTheyLook characters like Vita.
* VerbalTic: "Desu~"
* VocalEvolution: Justified, Rein had only a single line[[note]]Yes, Meister Hayate[[/note]] in ''A's''. Since ''[=StrikerS=]'', her voice is very high-pitched.
* WalkingSpoiler: When you consider that "Zwei" is German for "2", you have to wonder what happened to the first one.
* WeakButSkilled: She's not nearly as strong as Reinforce Eins or Hayate, but Reinforce Zwei is still a more competent mage than Hayate and is completely independent from her, while Hayate ''is'' dependent on others.

!![=NachtWal=] / The Automatic Defense Program / The Darkness of the Book of Darkness
!!!Voiced by: Alexandra Haefelin, Creator/SanaeKobayashi (the humanoid part)
[[quoteright:350:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/nachtwal_7006.jpg]]
-> "''The program that gave the Tome of the Night Sky the name 'Cursed Book of Darkness'. [=NachtWal=]'s infective destructive form... The '''Darkness''' of the Book of Darkness.''"\
-- '''Hayate''', ''The Movie 2nd A's''

The Automatic Defense Program is a part of the Book of Darkness whose programming was corrupted under undisclosed circumstances a long time ago. Said corruption is the cause of the eternal cycle of destruction the Book is best known for, therefore the Defense Program is the main antagonist of ''Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaAs'' and ''The Movie 2nd A's'' and the [[SuperpoweredEvilSide antithesis]] to Reinforce. It's also referred as the Darkness of the Book of Darkness and [=NachtWal=].

Hayate reprograms the system of the Book of Darkness and seperates the Defense Program completely from the Book, so [=NachtWal=] can be destroyed without killing Book itself.
----
* TwoDVisualsThreeDEffects: The movie version of it is entirely made of CG.
* AdaptationalBadass: Subverted. TheMovie version of [=NachtWal=] ''does'' fight back, but it can do nothing against its enemies.
* AdaptationalVillainy: Since [[spoiler:Graham and his {{Familiar}}s]] are AdaptedOut in TheMovie, [=NachtWal=] is portrayed as an even more evil entity than it already was. [=NachtWal=] kills the Wolkenritter and [[BreakTheCutie breaks Hayate]] to complete the Book of Darkness. TheMovie blames everything on the Defense Program.
* AIIsACrapshoot: It's the corrupted part of the Book of Darkness and caused the cycle of destruction. Also, thanks to AdaptationalVillainy, [=NachtWal=] suddenly decides to sacrifice the Wolkenritter for the Book's completion, even when Hayate orders it not to do it.
* ArtEvolution: An understatement. The TV and movie versions of the EldritchAbomination look very different.
* AttackOfTheFiftyFootWhatever: An extremely large EldritchAbomination.
* BarbieDollAnatomy: Played with. It looks like this trope, but there are a few shots where the humanoid part has nipples.
* BlackEyesOfEvil: In the movie version, the humanoid part of the EldritchAbomination has black or dark blue eyes.
* BigBad: Is the closest thing that ''A's'' has to a central antagonist as its corrupted programing is the reason for the Book of Darkness eating away at its masters bodies and eventually leads to them destroying themselves and the worlds around them which is the cause for every tragedy involving the Book of Darkness. The movie makes [=NachtWal=] a more prominent character from the start and [[AdaptedOut removing]] [[spoiler:Gil Graham and the Liese twins]] thus making [=NachtWal=] more [[AdaptationalVillainy malevolent to compensate]].
* BilingualDialogue: The few times that [=NachtWal=] speaks during the movie it is entirely in Belkain style Germen it never once uses Japanese.
* BoundAndGagged: By Yuuno and Arf in the beginning of the FinalBattle. Also nailed by Zafira.
* CompositeCharacter: In TheMovie, [=NachtWal=] also takes the role of [[spoiler:Graham and the Liese twins]] who are AdaptedOut.
* CurbStompBattle: [=NachtWal=] has no chance against the heroes and the Wolkenritter.
* DarkIsEvil: It's referred as the Darkness of the Book of Darkness. It's the reason why the Book was so messed up.
* DeaderThanDead: [=NachtWal=] is destroyed by TSAB and the Yagami family, but [[spoiler:to prevent its regeneration, Reinforce sacrifices her life]].
* DeflectorShield:
** In TheMovie, [=NachtWal=] protects Vita from Nanoha's ''Divine Buster Extension'' with a barrier, and later protects itself from Zafira's MegatonPunch.
** In the FinalBattle, it's protected by several barriers and shields. All of them get eventually broken.
* DevourTheDragon: In TheMovie, it's [=NachtWal=] who drained the Linker Cores of the Wolkenritter to complete the Book of Darkness and then killed them.
* DidYouJustPunchOutCthulhu: Pretty much the description of the FinalBattle.
* DumbMuscle: The result of being seperated from the Book of Darkness.
* EldritchAbomination: After being separated from the Book of Darkness, it's embodied as a mix of all creatures whose Linker Cores were absorbed. The result looks ugly.
* EnemyWithout: To Reinforce, after [=NachtWal=] is separated from the Book.
* EnergyWeapon: In the TV version, it has no chance to use them. In the movie version, it fires them, but they are not much of a help.
* EvilSoundsDeep: In TheMovie, the humanoid part has a really deep voice and sounds and growls like an animal, a big contrast to it's TV counterpart.
* EyesDoNotBelongThere: The result of its regeneration has eyes everywhere.
* FacialMarkings: When controlling Hayate's/Reinforce's body. The humanoid part of the EldritchAbomination has also red markings.
* FauxAffablyEvil: Especially in TheMovie, where it's polite to Hayate even while killing the Wolkenritter in front of her.
* FromASingleCell:
** [=NachtWal=] was the reason that the Book of Darkness always regenerated herself after every destruction.
** It can regenerate from its Linker Core rapidly. It looks even uglier than it's "centaur" form.
** Even when it's completely destroyed, as long its origin exists, [=NachtWal=] will regenerate out of nowhere.
* GameFace: In TheMovie, when it recovers from Unison Hayate's ''[[TakenForGranite Mistilsteinn]]'', the humanoid part looks even more monstrous than before.
* GreaterScopeVillain: It's mentioned in the very end of the series that [=NachtWal=] is the cause of the Book's history of destruction. However [=NachtWal=] themselves doesn't physically appear until the FinalBattle.
* GodivaHair: In TheMovie, the humanoid part of the EldritchAbomination has GodivaHair.
* GorgeousGorgon: In TheMovie, [=NachtWal=] is genuine horror. It takes the form of several black snakes that cover the Book of Darkness completely.
* HealingFactor: Part of what makes [=NachtWal=] so dangerous is the fact that, as long as the core survives, it can continuously regenerate itself and replace destroyed parts with those from the creatures absorbed by the Book of Darkness. Even when the protagonists are able to destroy its main body and teleport it to the Arthra so it can be destroyed it was already repairing itself during transit.
* MeaningfulName:
** The Automatic Defense Program is called Darkness of the Book of Darkness because it's the Book's entire evilness.
** [=NachtWal=] is German for [=NightWhale=]. The "Wal" part can be a [[PunnyName pun]] to the German word "Wall" which means "wall". However, the A in "Wal" is definitely pronounced longly, so it's rather unlikely that it's supposed to be "Wall".
* MessyHair: In the TV version, the humanoid part has long, messy hair. In the movie version, it has straight hair.
* MightyGlacier: This EldritchAbomination is '''really''' slow, making it a very easy target. It's also surrounded by four different shield layers, guarded by various sentries, and has an insane HealingFactor which requires the protagonists to utilize their best attacks one after another to defeat it.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: TheMovie gives the Automatic Defense Program aka the Darkness of the Book of Darkness the name "[=NachtWal=]".
* NamesToRunAwayFromReallyFast: One of its names is "The Darkness of the Book of Darkness".
* NotQuiteDead: Even after it's destruction, there is still the chance that it will regenerate after a short time as long as Reinforce exists. The solution: [[spoiler:Reinforce must die]].
* OneWayVisor: In TheMovie, the humanoid part of the EldritchAbomination has a red and blue visor that hides its eyes. It eventually loses the visor.
* OurCentaursAreDifferent: In the end of both versions, [=NachtWal=] takes the form of a very gross looking, gigantic centaur beast. On top of the beast is the upperbody of a female humanoid.
* PowerFist [[EvilWeapon of Evil]]: In the movie adaptation, Reinforce uses [=NachWal=] as a gauntlet-like weapon.
* PurpleIsPowerful: In the TV version, the EldritchAbomination is mainly purple colored.
* RasputinianDeath: Here's a short list of what it took to put this thing down: trapped by three binding spells, crushed by a hammer the size of an apartment complex, blasted by a WaveMotionGun, pierced by an exploding arrow, chopped in half by a {{BFS}}, another binding spell, [[TakenForGranite turned to stone]], frozen solid, hit by three more {{Wave Motion Gun}}s, had the core of its magic ripped out, teleported into low Earth orbit, and finally hit by an even bigger WaveMotionGun that puts it in a collapsing pocket dimension. And it ''still'' would have regenerated if [[spoiler: Reinforce hadn't performed a HeroicSuicide]].
* RedEyesTakeWarning: In the TV version, the humanoid part of the EldritchAbomination has red eyes.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: [=NachtWal=]'s name is written like this in the official English subtitles and in other official materials, like the OST tracklist or the DVD/Blu-ray chapters.
* SuperpoweredEvilSide: The Automatic Defense System is Reinforce's corrupted part which killed her previous masters. It also takes control of Hayate's/Reinforce's body during the battle against Nanoha and Fate.
* TheSymbiote: [=NachtWal=]'s movie counterpart is treated this way as it is shown starting out as a collecting of [[SnakesAreSinister snakes]] that wrap around Reinforce's arm tuning into her device (a gauntlet and prong weapon). Eventually, once [=NachtWal=] goes out of control, the snakes reform and start wrapping around Reinforce's body in an attempt to subjugate her.
* TragicMonster: [=NachtWal=] is treated this way as, while it is a threat to the heroes, it's just a program that was forcibly corrupted long ago. Unlike Reinforce or the Wolkenritter it barely seems to have any sentience of its own and is more a rampaging beast then a malicious villain. Hayate even [[ApologeticAttacker apologises to it]], before her unison attack with Nanoha and Fate, telling it to rest in peace. In the movie version Reinforce even tells [=NachtWal=] that it's not their vault for being the way they are and that [[ItsAllMyFault all fault lies with her]].
* ThereIsNoKillLikeOverkill: It gets smashed by a gigantic hammer bigger than itself, burned by an detonating arrow, sliced by a {{BFS}}, [[TakenForGranite petrified]], [[KillItWithIce frozen]], the body obliterated by a ''[[WaveMotionGun Trip]][[WaveMotionSword le Bre]][[WaveMotionGun aker]]'', its Linker Core is teleported to space and destroyed by an even bigger WaveMotionGun. And finally, [[spoiler:Reinforce does a HeroicSuicide to prevent its return forever]].
* VoiceOfTheLegion: In the TV version, the humanoid part sounds like Reinforce, but its voice echoes.
* TheVoiceless: In the anime version [=NachtWal=] never actually speaks and merely provides inhuman screams whenever its limbs are attacked.
* WalkingSpoiler: The fact that it's Reinforce SuperpoweredEvilSide that caused all the deaths involving the Book of Darkness is a big spoiler. It's fate is also a spoiler.
* WhiteHairBlackHeart: In the TV version, the humanoid part of the EldritchAbomination has white hair like Reinforce. In the movie version, the hair is dark brown.

* DynamicEntry: Lotte performs this on [[spoiler:Chrono when he is about to arrest Shamal, then on Fate, after she attacks Aria]].
* EasilyForgiven: By Nanoha, Fate and Hayate. For Chrono it's not sure, but the Wolkenritter, especially Vita, do not.

* {{Familiar}}s: To Gil Graham.
* FirstNameBasis: Prefer being called by their first name when addressed individually and "[[LastNameBasis Liese]]" when addressed as a pair.
** Except that Liese isn't actually their surname, and Aria and Lotte are just nicknames.
** They call Chrono's father "Clyde-kun," implying that they're somewhat familiar with him.
* GenkiGirl: Lotte.
* HotBlooded: Lotte, especially in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', where she starts many battles against her own comrades for personal reasons or because of misunderstandings. Though, Aria is not ''that'' better.
* ImpaledWithExtremePrejudice: Lotte is able to impale her enemies with her hand, but it's not actually a lethal attack, as it only goes through the body without injuring it. [[spoiler:She does this to Fate to take her Linker Core.]]
* ImposterForgotOneDetail: [[spoiler: When they disguise themselves as Nanoha and Fate, they get the colors on their Barrier Jackets wrong because cats are colorblind.]]
* InSeriesNickname: Their actual names are Liesearia and Lieselotte. Aria and Lotte are shortened versions of their names, but most fans assume, "Liese" is their surname. Together they are just called "Liese/Lise" by other characters.
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler: In order to activate the Book Of Darkness, they absorb Shamal and Signum's Linker Cores, beat up Zafira to do the same to him, and then finish off Vita in front of Hayate while disguised as Nanoha and Fate. While all the people in question get better, ''no one'' brings up what happened or proposes any punishment.]]
* KickChick: Lotte. In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', both of them use only kicks in close range combat.
* {{Jerkass}}: In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', Lotte acts a bit of a jerk towards the Yagami family. This causes a lot of trouble during the story and Aria has always to go in between the fights.
* LastNameBasis: In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', they call Hayate always by her family name, Yagami, without any suffix.
* LongHairIsFeminine: The more feminine Aria has much longer hair than her tomboy sister Lotte.
* LimitBreak: ''Mirage Assault'' in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', which deals 45% basic damage, that is average.
* MarshmallowHell: Lotte inflicts this on Chrono twice in the span of 20 seconds, and then pretty much pounces on him. When Chrono resurfaces, he's CoveredInKisses.
--> '''Lotte:''' "That was yummy!"
* MaskPower: [[spoiler:They wear masks while serving as the Wolkenritter's [[MysteriousProtector Mysterious Protectors]] and are two of the strongest fighters in the season]].
* MasterOfNone: In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', the twins are arguably the worst characters, though their stats say otherwise. They have average defense (or stamina) and an average LimitBreak, their close range damage output is not that bad and they can be DifficultButAwesome in long range combat. However, they still are not good characters to play with. An example is seen [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fe9zT4tKvMY&t=2m here]] with their close range combos requiring timing dash cancels to get optimal damage. Other characters in the game are able to match or surpass their damage output for far less effort.
* MyMasterRightOrWrong: [[spoiler: Willing to help Graham carry out his plan, and seem to have fewer reservations about it than he does]].
* MysteriousProtector: [[spoiler:They initially seem to be the Wolkenritter's allies, but are actually using them to complete the Book of Darkness]].
* OhCrap: [[spoiler:After Chrono both disables and unmasks them, with a spell that neither of them taught him.]]
* OlderThanTheyLook: They look like teenagers or young adults, but as the familiars of the elderly Admiral Graham, they have been around for decades, and were seen along with him when Admiral Clyde sacrificed himself. In ''Gears of Destiny'', they occasionally remark on how old they are compared to most of the cast.
* OnlyKnownByHisNickname: They are generally referred to by their nicknames, to the point that the fans have missed their real names for years. The one character who does call them by their real names is Amy.
* OnlyOneName: Many fans assume that Liese is their surname, which is untrue since the names Liesearia and Lieselotte are written together in Japanese. In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', only the first names of all characters are written in the speech box[[note]]Mariel's nickname "Mari" is used instead[[/note]], including their real names, Liesearia and Lieselotte.
* TheReliableOne: Aria is much more professional than Lotte and separates her personal problems from her job. In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', she's the one who ends most of the unnecessary fights that are caused by Lotte.
* ShortRangeGuyLongRangeGuy: They each specialize in teaching different types of combat. Lotte does martial arts, while Aira uses magic.
* ShutUpKirk: [[spoiler:When Chrono tells them that their plan is illegal, Lotte angrily insists that innocent people, including Chrono's father, have died because attempts to stop the Book of Darkness have been constrained by the law. Graham, who has accepted that Chrono has thwarted his plan, cuts her off]].
* SiblingTeam: They fight in pairs, but they also appear alone and are still competent. In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', they only appear together and you can switch between them during the battle. However, in the Story Mode, only Lotte's character model is shown (excluding their CGI appearance), despite Aria is always with her. And when the twins are attacked by a [[FinishingMove Full Drive Burst]], it's always Aria's character model who takes the attack.
* SiblingYinYang: The hyperactive and playful Lotte is Chrono's physical combat instructor, while the more reserved Aria is the magical instructor.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Liese, Lise or Lieze?
* TakingTheHeat: [[spoiler:Claim that the plan was entirely their idea until Graham points out that Chrono knows otherwise]].
* TomboyAndGirlyGirl: Lotte and Aria, respectively.
* WalkingSpoiler: They play a major part in ''A's'', but that part is a spoiler.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:They support Graham's plan to seal Hayate with the Book of Darkness away, but their methods look really vicious. Is the BreakTheCutie moment really necessary?]]

An admiral of the TSAB, who helps support Hayate. It turns out he planned for her to awaken the Book of Darkness and seal her away with it. His plan doesn't work out, and he resigns after the incident is over.
----
* AdaptedOut: He doesn't appear in the movie adaptation. JustifiedTrope, as the movie is supposed to be [[RecursiveCanon an in-universe adaptation of the anime's events]], and details about his role in said events [[TreacheryCoverUp were classified.]]
* AnonymousBenefactor: Admiral Graham turns out to be Hayate's "[[HonoraryUncle uncle]]", who provides her with money.
* AlliterativeName: '''G'''il '''G'''raham.
* AntiVillain: [[spoiler:Type III; he's committed to stopping the Book of Darkness once and for all, and sees sealing its innocent young master away for eternity as an acceptable price to pay, even if he's not happy to do so.]]
* BeardOfEvil: He has a full gray beard and, while not purely evil, [[spoiler:is a WellIntentionedExtremist who is willing to sacrifice a young girl to seal away the Book of Darkness]]. Ironically, [[spoiler:his beard became thicker after he left the TSAB and lives peacefully with his familiars]].
* BrokenPedestal: For Chrono. Chrono respects him as a mentor, but while he stays polite throughout [[spoiler:the confrontation with him over his plans for Hayate]], it's clear that he disapproves of Graham's actions and has lost respect for him.
%%* CoolOldGuy
* CovertPervert: He doesn't display it, but most characters who have familiars have only one, and there's little to no sexual subtext. Graham has a pair of horny catgirl twins. You do the math.
* EvenEvilHasStandards: [[spoiler:He believes that making Hayate happy until she has to be sealed away is the least he can do for her, although he also concedes that's a hypocritical gesture. He also doesn't seem to care for Lotte bringing up Chrono's father when saying that a lot of people died due to the TSAB being bound by the law in the fight against the Book of Darkness]].
* EvilBrit: He's from England and [[spoiler:he turns out to be the man who tries to seal Hayate away, but with good intentions.]]
* TheHeavy: [[spoiler:He's responsible behind most scenes in ''A's''.]]
* HonoraryUncle: Hayate calls him "Graham-oji-san".
* {{Hypocrite}}: By his own admission, [[spoiler:providing Hayate financial support so she could be happy before she had to be sealed away]].
* IllegalGuardian: Supports Hayate [[spoiler:so she will be happy in the time she has left.]]
* ItsAllMyFault: He blames himself for Clyde's death due to him having been the one to give the order to destroy the Hestia while Clyde was still on board (though Clyde had actually requested that he do so). Lindy makes it clear that she doesn't hold him responsible for her husband's death. [[spoiler:His guilt over the event is part of the reason why he put his plan involving Hayate into motion.]]
* JuniorCounterpart: Nanoha is this to him. His backstory is very similar to Nanoha's. Graham was once a normal boy from England who found an injured TSAB soldier in a forest and helped him. The young Graham got contact with the world of magic for the first time and he eventually became a TSAB officer himself later.
* KarmaHoudini: [[spoiler:The [[ArtifactOfDoom Book of Darkness]] decides to kill Nanoha and trap Hayate and Fate in [[LotusEaterMachine eternal dreams]]. The one responsible for setting up the whole thing turns out to be Graham. He thought it was [[IDidWhatIHadToDo the only way]] to get rid of the [[ClingyMacGuffin Book of Darkness]] once and for all. It took Nanoha's over-powered ten-member party, ''which included the current master of the book'' plus the [[WaveMotionGun Arc-en-Ciel]] to [[strike:finally destroy]] temporarily regain control of it.]] His fate at the end? Retiring back in his home country of England, Earth, with his two familiars to keep him company.
* KnowWhenToFoldEm: [[spoiler:After Chrono catches him, he realizes he can no longer proceed with his plan, and tells Chrono to do what he wants with Durandal.]]
* LastNameBasis: Everyone calls him by his last name, Graham.
* MuggleBornOfMages: He's implied to be an inversion, given his comment about the rarity of mages on Earth.
* MyGreatestFailure: Blames himself for Clyde Harlaown's death.
* ThePlan: [[spoiler:Graham, after discovering Hayate is the master of the Book of Darkness, plans to activate it on a world nominally beyond TSAB control and then seal her away by freezing her so that the Book cannot reincarnate elsewhere]]. He probably didn't count on his plan not working, or that a bunch of overpowered 9-year olds could destroy the defense program at the root of the problem.
* ReasonableAuthorityFigure: The closest thing Fate has to a probation officer, and he puts no restrictions on her actions so long as she does not betray her friends or those who believe in her.
* SadisticChoice: This guy had to make really hard decisions in his life.
** Destroying the Book of Darkness together with Clyde who requested him for that or saving his life, but risking the Book of Darkness running away. He took the former and he still feels it.
** [[spoiler:Sealing the innocent mistress of the Book of Darkness away, killing her or just overlooking it. He thought sealing is the least cruel fate for her.]]
* StayWithTheAliens: Subverted. He moved to Mid-Childa when he joined the TSAB, but he moved back to Earth when he retired.
* TraitorShot: The camera lingers on his face after his introductory scene, showing that he's slightly disturbed by the revelation that Chrono is handling the Book of Darkness case. This is the first hint that he's hiding something.
* TreacheryCoverUp: [[spoiler:Admiral Graham's plan to seal the Book of Darkness away with Hayate is largely overlooked outside of the upper echelons of the TSAB, and he [[KarmaHoudini merely resigns]], only being officially accused of breaking into Bureau systems and interfering with the investigation.]]
* TreacherousAdvisor: To Chrono, who investigates the Book of Darkness Incident.
* WalkingSpoiler: There is a reason why many his tropes are spoilered.
* WellIntentionedExtremist: [[spoiler:His plan to seal Hayate with the Book of Darkness away is for the greater good, but his actions are illegal and are ethically dubious. And he's aware of it.]]

Mariel Atenza, commonly referred to as Mary, is the head of the precision engineering section of the TSAB Main Branch Engineering Division, who appears briefly in A's and ''[[Anime/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaStrikers StrikerS]]'' and is mentioned in ''Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaVivid''. In ''[[Manga/MagicalRecordLyricalNanohaForce Force]]'', she's a member of Special Duty 6 and the technical adviser.
----
* AscendedExtra: She only had a few cameos in ''A's'', but she replaces Amy in the Device scenes of ''The Movie 2nd A's''.
* BigWhat: Her reaction to Vivio having two mommies.
* TheEngineer: Mariel is responsible for the maintenance of Nanoha and Fate's Devices, as well as for performing medical checkups on the Combat Cyborgs Subaru Nakajima and Ginga Nakajima, and later for the other Nakajima sisters. She is the one who created Hayate's ''Schwerzkreuz'' and constructed Vivio Takamachi's Device, Sacred Heart.
* InSeriesNickname: Everyone calls her "Mari". The speech box in ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'' credits her just with her nickname, despite even the Liese twins' real names are credited in the speech box.
* TheMedic: In ''VideoGame/TheGearsOfDestiny'', she claims to be a "doctor" for robots and cyborgs when [[spoiler:Kyrie]] tells Shamal that a doctor can't help her if she's damaged. She actually is a "doctor" for the Combat Cyborgs in the main continuity.
* OmnidisciplinaryScientist: Subverted. At first glance, her being the Nakajima sisters' physician makes it look like she's a medical doctor on top of being an engineer. In reality, it was forshadowing the fact that Subaru and Ginga are {{Cyborg}}s.
* PutOnABus: Notably, she's the only pre-''[=StrikerS=]'' character to avert this in ''AudioPlay/StrikersSoundStageX''.

[[quoteright:228:https://static.tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pub/images/clyde_harlaown_6737.jpg]]

The deceased father of Chrono and husband of Admiral Lindy. Admiral Clyde Harlaown was involved in a previous incident with Book of Darkness which took control of his spaceship when his team was about to seal it away. After the staff was evacuated, Clyde sacrificed his life to keep the Book inside the ship which is blown up by the Arc-en-ciel fired by Gil Graham. This event drove his three-year old son to become a strong person and it burdened Graham and the Liese twins very deeply.
----
* AncestralWeapon: The origin of his death was rewritten in TheMovie and he became the original owner of Durandal which is given to Chrono by Lindy due to the exclusion of Graham and the Liese twins.
* DeathByOriginStory: The only flashbacks about him show how he died. His death heavily influenced Chrono, who grew up to become strong, and Graham, whose life goal is to stop the Book of Darkness.
* DiesDifferentlyInAdaptation: While the underlying cause is the same (performing a HeroicSacrifice to stop the Book of Darkness), the exact details are different between the series and the movie. In the series he has Gil Graham blow up his ship once the rest of the crew has been evacuated, while in the movie he flew the book away on an escape pod which then blew up when the book went haywire.
* FaceDeathWithDignity: The last thing he was seen doing before his death was calmly saluting Graham. Less so in the movie, since it's kind of hard to keep your composure when you have roots trying to dig into your flesh.
* GoingDownWithTheShip: He remained in the [[CoolStarship Hestia]] when the [[ArtifactOfDoom Book of Darkness]] started taking control of the ship's systems so that he can ensure that all of his surviving crew members escape. Once he was sure that everyone else had evacuated, [[HeroicSacrifice he asked for the ship accompanying them to open fire on the Hestia]], as the Book of Darkness had already taken over the Hestia's weapon systems by that time and was going to fire first if they don't.
* HairColorDissonance: His hair color is either black or blue.
* HeroicSacrifice: He sacrificed his life to keep the Book of Darkness inside his spaceship, so it can be destroyed by the Ar-en-ciel. In the movie version, he instead brought it with him in an escape pod to protect the rest of the people on his ship and the pod blew up when the book went haywire.
* PosthumousCharacter: He died eleven years before the events of the first and second season.
* ShounenHair: His hair is messier than Chrono's straight hair.
* SparedByAdaptation: In ''[[Manga/MagicalGirlLyricalNanohaInnocent INNOCENT]]'', but he never appears.
* StrongFamilyResemblance: Chrono looks very similar to him, just with straight and darker hair.

Sachie Ishida is the doctor who treats Hayate Yagami in ''A's''. She works at Uminari City University Hospital and is in charge of neurology. She is a kind but strict person and is very concerned for Hayate's well-being. Despite Hayate's ailment being magical in nature and beyond her efforts to cure, she never gives up.
----
* {{Determinator}}: Despite Hayate's hopeless situation, she never give up to find a way to heal her.
* HospitalHottie: A young and attractive doctor.
* LockedOutOfTheLoop: In the third A's Sound Stage, she's invited to the picnic, but everyone involved is told not to let anything slip around her, from addressing the TSAB officers by their rank to mentioning who the Wolkenritter really are.
* {{Muggle}}: She's unaware of the existence of magic, of the curse of the Book of Darkness and of the true nature of the Wolkenritter.
* OnlyOneName: In ''A's'', she was just credited as "Doctor Ishida". Her full name is revealed in the movie.
* SugarAndIcePersonality: In the last episodes when she lectures Signum and Shamal, Vita notes that Dr. Ishida is a strict doctor, even Fate, who just sees her for the first time, finds her scary. But she's a very kind person and offered Hayate to eat cake together on Hayate's birthday, and Hayate likes her because of her kindness.
