!Reimu Hakurei
The main character of the game. She has average stats in everything, but she is played more as a spellcaster. She excels in light-elemental magic, and her skills also provide protection for the party against enemy attacks. Her signature weapon is a gohei, a blunt-type weapon that improves her light spells further. Naturally, as the main character, she is part of the starting party in both the main game and the Lingering Summer Heat scenario.
----
* AttackReflector: She can reflect breath attacks.
* BarrierWarrior: Reimu has a variety of Barrier spell cards to protect against various forms of attack, such as reflecting Breath attacks, nullifying certain elements of attacks (or physical/magical, if she so chooses) or even preventing all status ailments, though these barriers only last for one turn.
* CarryABigStick: Reimu's signature weapon type, Goheis. They act as a mixture between Axes and Staves.
* CripplingOverspecialization: All of Reimu's spells are light element, so if something immune to light shows up she's useless offensively.
* DeflectorShield: Her support skills are mostly this, nullifying incoming damage or status effects.
* Flanderization: This game seems to jack up Reimu's Jerkass attitude by a lot.
* JackOfAllStats: Has average stats in everything, but her magic Pun shines more.
* LightEmUp: Her spells are all light-elemental.
* TheRedMage: She can dish out both physical and magical damage, heal, and even protect teammates from harm.
* WhiteMage: While she shows elements of a Red Mage, as noted above, she is primarily at her best when using her light-elemental magic attacks, as a healer, or through her unique barriers, one-turn buffs that protect against damage or status effects, making her fit very well into the mold of a modern White Mage.

!Marisa Kirisame
She joins as part of your initial party. The first dedicated offensive spellcaster. She excels at dealing Mystic-elemental damage with her lasers and Master Spark, while also having some elemental spells as well. Her signature weapon is a broom, a stab-type weapon that also gives magic bonuses and improves her spells. In the Lingering Summer Heat scenario, she is recruited alongside Alice by completing the quest "The Witches' Lost Ball".
----
* BlackMage: The first primarily offensive mage you'll get.
* BroomstickQuarterstaff: Marisa's signature weapon are Brooms, which act as a hybrid of Staves and Spears.
* FireIceLightning: Her stardust spells take on this sort of trinity, in that each tier of Stardust spells has three variants: Fire (Hellfire, Extreme Heat, Dance of the Phoenix, Abaddon Fire), Water (Cold Inferno, Absolute Zero, Arctic Wind, Sub-Zero Cold) and Electric (Stardust Missile, Stardust Surge, Love Typhoon, Stardust Stroke). Fittingly, the related skill tree boosts her damage with these three elements.
* SquishyWizard: She can't take hits well at all.
* WaveMotionGun: Her Mystic elemental laser attacks come off as this, but none moreso than her Master Spark series of spells, which have their own dedicated skill tree.

!Sanae Kochiya
She joins as part of your initial party. The healer and group supporter. Her spells are all healing and buffs all party members. She can also revive teammates. Aside from that she has some offensive magic that is not quite useful. Her signature weapon is a snake, a slash-type weapon that also inflict status effects. In the Lingering Summer Heat scenario, she is recruited by completing the quest "Tempestuous Wind Priestess!"
----
* HealerSignsOnEarly: She's the primary healer and she's in the initial party.
* SnakeWhip: Sanae's signature weapon type, Snakes, are used as whips in Sanae's normal attack animation.
* StatusBuff: Her specialty besides healing. She gives buffs to the whole party.
* SupportPartyMember: Her skills are mostly healing and buffing. She doesn't have any good offensive spells to use.
* WhiteMage: The primary healer and group supporter. She's also the only one who can revive outside of Mokou's commander skill, or a rare, difficult-to-learn skill for Satori. (Or Akyuu in V, who learns Satori's aforementioned revival skill and can teach it to her.)

!Aya Shameimaru
She joins as part of your initial party. The fastest character in your party. She excels at manipulating turn order and improving the evasion and accuracy of allies. Her signature weapon is a fan, an accurate blunt-type weapon. In the Lingering Summer Heat scenario, she is recruited by completing the quest "The Hunter Becomes The Hunted".
----
* ActionInitiative: Her specialty. She can make someone or the whole party move first. This also includes making a target move last.
* AttackReflector: She can reflect breath attacks like Reimu, but it doesn't cost a bomb and can be used every turn, making it more effective.
* CombatHandFan: Aya's signature weapon type, Fans. They act as a more accurate version of crushers, with higher tier fans also boosting her evasion.
* EnemyScan: Her "Report" skill scans the enemy to add additional information in the bestiary. Only useful for HundredPercentCompletion.
* RazorWind: This is one of her two primary forms of attack, alongside her "beak" skills. These are slashing attacks that typically hit a wide area.
* SuperMode: When she uses her Last Word "Thunderclap Gale", she can attack twice and have increased stats.

!Sakuya Izayoi
She joins after beating Stage 2. She is the first dedicated physical attacker in your party. Her skills are either multi-hitting or inflict instant death. She can also set the field to include various effect such as preventing all healing or giving lifesteal to all attacks done by allies. Her signature weapon is a double-handed sword, a very strong but inaccurate slash-type weapon. In the Lingering Summer Heat scenario, she is recruited alongside Patchouli by completing the quest "Witch and Maid's Secret Tea Party".
----
* BFS: Her signature weapon type, Two-Handed Swords. They are very strong but inaccurate. Many of them also carry slayer effects.
* FlechetteStorm: Most of her skills involve throwing many knives to the opponent, some of them are multi-hitting.
* ShoutOut: The name of the variety buff her Last Word gives her is called "Greatest High", a reference to a line uttered in Manga/JoJosBizarreAdventure by the character Sakuya is an Expy of, DIO. Her pose when she activates a spell card is also heavily evocative of one of his poses in the fighting game VideoGame/JoJosBizarreAdventureHeritageForTheFuture.
* SuperMode: Her Last Word, "Sakuya's World" gives her immense stat boost and 100 Exorcism, 50 HP regen and 5 MP regen, all folded into a single variety buff slot.
* TimeStandsStill: Her spell cards can set a field effect which works like Quick from VideoGame/FinalFantasy, or stop the enemies from moving.

!Patchouli Knowledge
She joins after beating Stage 2. The second offensive spellcaster. She can use all elements, but she specializes in fire, water, earth, and lightning elements. Surprisingly has high physical attack. Her signature weapon is a book, a blunt-type weapon that improves her spells. In the Lingering Summer Heat scenario, she is recruited alongside Sakuya by completing the quest "Witch and Maid's Secret Tea Party".
----
* BlackMage: She's the second offensive spellcaster after Marisa, and she can use all elements, but she primarily focuses on fire, water, earth, and lightning. (And in particular she can only access Mystic attacks through her Last Spell and Last Word).
* CastFromHitPoints: One of her skills lets her regain MP at the cost of her lives.
* ColonyDrop: The animation for "Hot Jupiter" involves a sphere like Jupiter crashing the field with electricity.
* GlassCannon: Patchouli has very strong magic and can even deal decent physical damage with the right build, but either way she can't take a hit.
* SquishyWizard: Very strong magic attacker, very weak defense.
* ThrowTheBookAtThem: Her signature weapon types are Books, which are somewhat a mixture between crushers and staves.

!Nitori Kawashiro
She joins after beating Stage 2. She's the second physical attacker, while she can also provide some support to the party. She has elemental skills, and she has an unique skill in "Chasers", which when she uses it, she will attack enemies after an ally use an attack corresponding to the element used. Her signature weapon is a gun, a stab-type weapon that always carries slayer against Warriors and Magicians. In the Lingering Summer Heat scenario, she is recruited by completing the quest "Kappa Washed Away".
----
* BFG: Some of her weapons, with one of them looking like a mini-tank.
* DeflectorShield: Some of her spell cards act this way, having a chance of nullifying incoming attacks.
* FantasticNuke: Her Last Word "Atomic Kappa" sends an atomic missile towards a single enemy target for very high damage.

!Alice Margatroid
She joins after beating Stage 3. She is the party's only dedicated tank. She specializes in protecting her allies using her shield, and also can cover them so that she is the one who takes the incoming damage. Her signature weapon is greaves, a blunt-type weapon that inflicts daze and gives defensive bonuses. In the "Lingering Summer Heat" scenario, she is recruited alongside Marisa by completing the quest "The Witches' Lost Ball".
----
* CastFromHitPoints: Her 2-bomb spell card "Straw Doll Kamikaze" uses half of her current HP to damage enemies. The less HP she has, the weaker it is. The HP loss can be reduced to a quarter by maxing one of her skill tree.
* DrawAggro: She has a skill which makes enemies target her.
* FlunkyBoss: Her boss battle involves deploying dolls to protect her.
* NighInvulnerability: Her Last Word, "Alice Guard" makes her immune to all attacks thrown at her.
* StoneWall: The primary tank of the party, with little offense except for one spell card.
* TakingTheBullet: She can cover one person or even an entire party from attacks.

!Satori Komeiji
She joins after beating Stage 5. Initially she will only have status and debuffing spells with no damaging skills, but her main strength is that she can copy enemy skills by being hit by them although at a percentage chance. Her signature weapon is an eye, a slash-type weapon that carries elemental properties. In the Lingering Summer Heat scenario, she is recruited by completing the quest "Komeiji Zoo".
----
* ACupAngst: She doesn't like being called flat.
* BerserkButton: Do not call her ACupAngst flat-chested!
* EliteTweak: With enough skill learning, she could easily become the most useful party member.
* EnemyScan: She can scan enemies to show their HP and weakness. Useful for the first time, but becomes useless immediately because the bestiary records all stats including weaknesses.
* LuckBasedMission: Learning the enemy skills. This can be improved by enhancing her skill tree, and in V there is a quest to obtain an accessory to further improve Satori's odds of learning skills.
* MagikarpPower: Starts out not impressive. However, she will be increasingly useful as you later obtain more enemy skills for her.
* MindOverManners: Upon denying the request from the party to join them, decided to reveal Reimu's not-so-polite thoughts to back her up, then start on the other party members' thoughts as well - which are petty and totally unrelated things. She got so much into mind reading that she didn't realize that every single party member (including those who normally object to violent methods) is now surrounding her with a livid expression, hellbent on beating her up.
* PowerCopying: She can obtain enemy skills by being hit like a Blue Mage. However, she's not guaranteed to learn them, and she can only learn one spell at a time. She will only get the last spell she learns.
* SquishyWizard: She can't take hits, fortunately skills can be learned even if it's a fatal blow, but you still need to win the battle to keep the learned spells.

!Youmu Konpaku
She joins after beating Stage 6. Using her is a bit different because she needs to use a stance before she can access her powerful moves while also give stat boosts. She excels in inflicting status effects and dealing massive damage in critical hits. Her signature weapon is a katana, a slash-type weapon that is strong and accurate and often gives bonus to critical hits. In the Lingering Summer Heat scenario, she is recruited by completing the quest "Booo!".
----
%%* BladeSpam: Several of her skills have this animation.
* CounterAttack: She can buff herself with a status that allows her to counter any physical attacks.
* CriticalHitClass: She only has average physical attack for an attacker, but this is compensated by having a high critical rate (and one of her three stances boosts this even further). One of her skills also makes her next attack a guaranteed critical hit, and another boosts the damage of her critical hits.
* DoppelgangerAttack: Her upgraded InfinityPlusOneSword transforms her ghost-half into a clone of herself and attack the enemies.
* LightningBruiser: Has good attack, high defense, and is also rather fast to boot.
* OneHitKill: Some of Youmu's weapons have an attached Instant Death effect, and of course, her Last Word, Konpaku Flash, attempts to inflict this to all enemies.
* SingleStrokeBattle: Her Last Word has her blitzing through the field and inflicts instant death to all enemies. It doesn't always work though.
* StanceSystem: Her playstyle. She has to enter one of three stances before she can use her more powerful skills. Aside from that the stances also give useful stat boosts. At higher levels, she gains access to a fourth stance that allows her to use the skills of all three other stances. In particular:
** The Human Realm Sword stance boosts Youmu's accuracy and critical hit rate, further compounding her role as a CriticalHitClass. The skills she gains with this stance either reduce the target's defense or are multi-hit attacks, granting her potentially explosive burst damage. It also grants her exceptional ability to slay Yukkuris, especially when combined with her Yukkuri Slash.
** The Asura Realm Sword stance boosts Youmu's physical attack, granting her more consistent damage than the Human Realm Sword stance, at the cost of having less burst damage. The skills she gains with this stance typically strike a wide area, making them great for taking down hordes of low HP mobs.
** The Deva Realm Sword stance boosts Youmu's physical defense, granting her increased survivability. Her skills in this stance tend to hamper an opponent's offenses or boost Youmu's defenses, further allowing Youmu to take hits.
** The Absolute Harmony stance grants Youmu increased Max HP, increasing her survivability akin to Deva Realm Sword, but its main draw is that during this stance, for the purposes of being able to use her skills, she is treated as being in all three other stances at once, granting her access to all of her skills.
!Fujiwara no Mokou
She can be recruited at the start of the game (Except in V, where it was removed), but if you didn't, she automatically joins when entering Stage 9. Another strong physical attacker, but also fast and very durable. Her skills are mostly fire-elemental, and she has reraise spells that can save party members if hit by a fatal attack. Her skill tree can give her a small chance to revive herself after she's KO'ed. Her signature weapon is a fist, a blunt-type weapon that has high accuracy and often inflicts various status. In the "Lingering Summer Heat" scenario, she is recruited by completing the quest "Wrong Fuse".
----
* GoodOldFisticuffs: She fights using her fists, her weapon being PowerFist.
* KonamiCode: Her recruitment involves going through the Bamboo Forest maze according to the code's directions.
* LastChanceHitPoint: Some of her spell cards and commander skill gives this effect.
* LightningBruiser: She has very high strength, defense, and decent speed.
* PlayingWithFire: Most of her skills are fire-elemental.

!Byakuren Hijiri
She can be recruited at the start of the game (Except in V, where it was removed), but if you didn't, she automatically joins when entering Stage 11. Her skills all revolve around giving buffs and debuffs like Sanae, but her skills are single target. She also carries status effects, light and dark-elemental spells, as well as some healing. Her signature weapon is a scroll, a slash-type weapon that reduce incoming damage to her. In the "Lingering Summer Heat" scenario, she is recruited by completing the quest "Mud Boat Sightseeing Cruise".
----
* TheRedMage: She's like Reimu but more support oriented and has dark-elemental spells. She can't protect teammates though.
* SpellBlade: She can imbue others' weapon with any element except Mystic.
* SupportPartyMember: She can buff your party like Sanae, but her spells are all single target. She can also debuff enemies.
* WaitingPuzzle: Her recruitment requires you to wait one hour in real time in the Myouren Temple.
%%* YinYangBomb: She can use both light and dark element.

!Genji
An old and wise turtle. He's that same Genji that Reimu used to ride in the PC-98 games. In this game he's now serving for the antagonists and fights you to protect them.
----
* BreathWeapon: He has powerful breath skills.
* FaceHeelTurn: He was Reimu's flying turtle in PC-98 era Touhou, but now he serves the antagonists. According to Genji himself, this is primarily due to Reimu working him to the bone until after Mystic Square, at which point she kicked him out due to no longer being useful. As she so eloquently puts it herself, explaining to Marisa why she hadn't seen him around:
--> Marisa: "I haven't seen ya around in ages, Genji. What happened...?"\
Reimu, pointing at Genji: "That? Flight item."\
Marisa: "Uh-huh."\
Reimu: "Old me? Couldn't fly."\
Marisa: "Uh-huh."\
Reimu: "New me? Can fly."\
Marisa: "Uh-huh."\
Reimu: "So that? Trashed."\
Marisa: "I gotcha."\
Sakuya: "As cruel as always..."
* RecurringBoss: Fought twice, with the second paired up with Matsuba.
%%* Revenge: Seems to be his motive to oppose Reimu and friends.
%%* SchmuckBait: Tries to pull this off to the main characters. It fails.
* TookALevelInBadass: In this game, he can put up a fight with the main characters despite being an old turtle. He's what Sage Ghido would be if he was a boss.
* TheOneGuy: The only male antagonist and plot-important character.

* AnimalMotifs: She's a crab youkai.
* DegradedBoss: She can be summoned by the FinalBoss later on, having decreased stats.

%%* OriginalCharacter
* PowerPincers: Her scissors, as part of her crab motif.

* PoisonousPerson: She excels in inflicting poison on your party.

!!Chihiro Himaka
* AnimalMotifs: She's an octopus youkai.

!!Kagami Kaizuka
* AlliterativeName: Kagami Kaizuka.
* AnimalMotifs: She's a shellfish youkai.

!Gorgon Sisters
The instigators of the mist incident. They originally came from the Outside World, then migrated to Gensokyo because they have lost faith and want to regain it.
----
* BigBadDuumvirate: They all work together in causing the incident.
* DefeatMeansFriendship: As per usual in Touhou. They stay in Gensokyo and become popular with the residents too.
%%* FusionDance: Does this in their final battle to turn OneWingedAngel.
%%* FinalBoss
* GodsNeedPrayerBadly: One of the main reasons why the Gorgon Sisters carried out the incident. They wanted to reclaim the followers they had lost in the Outside World.
* IncreasinglyLethalEnemy: If you let them live for 9 turns in the second phase of the final battle, they will become the TrueFinalBoss.
%%* OneWingedAngel: The result of their FusionDance.
%%* OriginalCharacter
* OurGodsAreDifferent: They're based on Greek Mythology rather than Japanese ones.
* SequentialBoss: Their last battle has three phases. First is a tag team where they take turns attacking, second when they are weakened and trying to fuse together, and the last phase which they are combined into one and turn OneWingedAngel.
* ShownTheirWork: Many of their traits are true in the mythology they're based on.
* ReptilesAreAbhorrent: They all have reptile motif and they're the instigator of the incident, although they're a lot nicer after the ending.
* ThirdEye: All the sisters have a third eye of some sort. Only Litos' eye is real.
* TrueFinalBoss: Letting them live for 9 turns in the second phase of the final battle will turn them to this. They have double HP, increased stats, and attack up to four turns. They also don't have a species to use slayer effects on.

!!Anastasis Stheno Gorgon
The oldest of the three sisters. She's a crocodile goddess possessing superhuman strength and powerful regenerative abilities.
----
* AffectionateNickname: Her sisters call her Sis.
* DynamicEntry: Before her boss fight, she ambushes the party members by punching through a wall.

* HardDrinkingPartyGirl: She really enjoys drinking.
* GoodSmokingEvilSmoking: She's regularly seen smoking with her pipe.
* LastDitchMove: Uses "Aging Drizzle" after she hits 0 HP, which guarantees TotalPartyKill if you don't know about it.
* MysteriousMist: She's the one who spreads the mist to Gensokyo.
* RetractableWeapon: She can somehow change her pipe's length.
* SlouchOfVillainy: Her default sprite is reclining on her shell.
* SuddenlySober: When facing the perpetrator in the expansion.
* TheWorfEffect: Although she puts up a good fight, she still lose to the expansion's villain, though being drunk might have something to do with it.

!!Litos Medousa Gorgon
The youngest of the three sisters. She's a snake goddess that can petrify people with her third eye.
----
* AnimalMotifs: Snakes.

* DefeatMeansPlayable: She becomes playable after beating her and her sisters.
%%* DishingOutDirt: Stone Shower.
* FixedDamageAttack: This is one of her specialties. "Maenads" always does 666 damage, the Last Spell version "Ra's al Ghul Maenads" does 6666 damage, her Last Word "Super Void Gravitation" does 7777 damage, and her last learned skill, the Last Spell "Cosmic Supercluster", does 9999 damage.

* RoyalRapier: Litos' signature weapon type, Rapiers. They always have 100 Exorcism (allowing them to completely ignore Divine Shields) and all but the basic Rapier also have attached status effects.
* ShoutOut: The animation of "Cosmic Supercluster" shows a meteor flying into the sun causing it to detonate, and mathematical equations showing up on the screen. It would appear that Litos channeled her inner Sephiroth for the attack.
* SpamAttack: Her Rapier skill tree has Wild Thrust, and she naturally learns the spell card "Pegasus Meteor Attack", both of which hit multiple times.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Litos or Lithos?
* TakenForGranite: Her other specialty. This is, perhaps a given, considering her namesake, but she exemplifies this with her Last Spell, Ra's al Ghul Gorgops, which has the strongest petrification effect in the game.
* Tsundere: She acts like a typical tsundere. Yukari lampshades this when they meet.
* WingedHumanoid: Has golden wings.
* WingsDoNothing: Her wings are there only as decorations.
* YoungestChildWins: She's the youngest of the Gorgon Sisters, is the primary instigator, and she's playable in the expansion.

!Litos Medousa Gorgon
She joins at the start of the expansion. She's the previous BigBad and joins forces with you to avenge Biotopos. She has some of her sisters' spell cards, but her main strength is magic and Fixed Damage Attacks. Her signature weapon is a rapier, a stab-type weapon that always gives 100 exorcism and inflicts status effects.\
See her entry in the Antagonists folder.

!Cirno
She joins after the mission "Unwavering Ice Fairy". Her skills are all water-elemental, and her main specialty is inflicting freeze on her opponents, while also having instant death skills. Her signature weapon is an ice, a slash-type weapon that has added water-elemental damage.
----
* AnIcePerson: She's an ice fairy, so this one was a given. Ice is folded into the water element in this game, but it's the same thing overall. ALL of her attacks are Water-Element, including her basic attack, if given her signature weapon type, Ice.
* CounterAttack: She can set a buff to herself so that she can counter any attack with a water-elemental attack.
* CripplingOverspecialization: In a similar vein to Reimu, all of Cirno's attacks and skills are water elemental.
* FragileSpeedster: Very fast, but the rest of her stats leave something to be desired.
* JokeCharacter: After a fashion, she has a very strong skill set but lacks the stats to actually use it effectively. This can be mitigated somewhat using accessories though.
* WeaksauceWeakness: Weak to fire, obviously. One of the few in the entire game to have skull weakness (8x damage).

!Reisen Udongein Inaba
She joins after the mission "Servant-Master Mochi Pounding". Her skills are unique in that they have slayer effect against status effects. Her skill tree also has slayer effects against many enemy types, making her suitable for general adventuring. Her signature weapon is a suppository, a stab-type weapon that inflicts berserk to enemies.
----
* MechanicallyUnusualClass: Other characters have a rather straightforward playstyle. Reisen however revolves around giving status effects to increase her damage output.
* SituationalDamageAttack: Her skills have slayer against status effects, which stacks with the slayer effects on her weapon and her skill tree, multiplying the damage even further.
* StatusBuffDispel: Investing into her Suppository skill tree turns her regular attacks into a variant of this that only dispels positive stat chances.
* WeaponOfXSlaying: Her "Mysteries of the Moon" skill tree, when sufficiently invested in, gives all her attacks a slayer effect against seven different races. Additionally is her unique "Special Slay", which works against enemies inflicting with status effects, and this stacks with her natural slayer effects.

!Remilia Scarlet
She joins after the mission "Mistress Gone Mad!". As befitting of a vampire, she has incredible strength and speed, but unfortunately she can't take many hits. Her skills are mostly damage dealing with some having lifesteal. Her signature weapon is a javelin, a stab-type weapon that is very strong but very inaccurate.
----
* ForcedTransformation: Her Last Word can turn enemies on the field into yukkuris.
* GlassCannon: Very strong and very fast, but low hp and defense.
* LifeDrain: Perhaps predictably, given how she's, y'know, a vampire, but Remilia learns multiple skills innately that have this sort of effect, and even certain spell cards also work towards this.
* JavelinThrower: Remilia's signature weapon type, a powerful stabbing weapon with long range.

!Yuugi Hoshiguma
She joins after beating Stage 22 (harkened by the quest "Wait, Yuugi!"). She's similar to Mokou, except that all of her skills are physical. Her signature weapon is various throwing weapons, a blunt-type weapon that mostly carry slayer effects.
----
* AttackAttackAttack: Her main strategy, she has no support skills except for two self-buffs and her Last Word.
* BattleCry: Her Last Word, which increases the damage dealt by all party members.
* CriticalHitClass: Similar to Youmu, having a skill tree that enhance the chance and damage, but she doesn't need it as much as Youmu.
* EleventhHourRanger: She never appeared in the game until the expansion, where she's a boss and then joins the party after being defeated.
* FastballSpecial: One of her weapons is named Suika, which involves throwing Suika Ibuki holding a watermelon (suika).
%* FuumaShuriken: Her InfinityMinusOneSword.
* MightyGlacier: Has very high STR, but one of the slowest characters.
* RapidFireFisticuffs: One of her spell cards does this, complete with ShoutOut to Akuma.

!Hieda no Akyuu
Exclusively to V, Akyuu joins the party after the completion of the Hieda Manor Basement BonusDungeon, which is unlocked during the tail end of Stage 21. Akyuu is sort of a mirror to Satori. She, too, can learn enemy skills, but does so by landing deathblows on enemies to record them into the Gensokyo Chronicle rather than taking their attacks. Her signature weapon is a brush, stab-type weapon with no special effects that she is locked into- she cannot equip any of the generic weapon types.
----
* DamageReduction: Defeating Foreign God enemies with her grants her their signature Divine Shield, reducing all damage taken, (This damage reduction is reduced against attacks with the Exorcism property). Additionally, her Last Word reduces damage taken by all allies to 1/3.
* MagikarpPower: Her start is even worse than Satori's already unimpressive start (Given her pathetic base HP and MP of 11 and 3, respectively, plus her weakness to physical attacks) especially given how she only joins the party during the tail end of Stage 21 (Read: the end of the main scenario) at the earliest (as opposed to Satori, who joins after Stage 5), and her stat growths from levelling up are the worst amongst the cast. The key word here, however, is "from levelling up." As she records enemies in the Gensokyo Chronicle, she quickly gains abilities and stat boosts to make her far more versatile and powerful than her shoddy bases would suggest. Getting enough enemies recorded will even let her learn the spell cards of bosses. This includes even cards that could be considered ThatOneAttack, such as Chihiro's Octopus Maelstrom.
* OptionalPartyMember: She's recruitable even before starting the Lingering Summer Heat content, but you must clear the BonusDungeon unlocked after defeating Litos for the first time in order to do so. She leaves the party once Lingering Summer Heat starts, as with the rest of the main cast sans Reimu, but if she was recruited during the main game, she can be recruited once more simply by returning to the Hieda Manor and talking to her.
* PowerCopying: Akyuu's gimmick is that she's sort of an inverse Satori- by scoring the finishing blow on any given enemy type for the first time (except bosses), she records them in the Gensokyo Chronicle, giving her permanent bonuses, based on the number of enemies of each race recorded. In particular:
** Recording Warriors grants physical attack skills.
** Recording Magicians grants magic attack skills.
** Recording Insects grants status infliction skills.
** Recording Aquatic enemies provides healing, buffing and world skills.
** Recording Plants grants a bonus to POT.
** Recording Youkai grants a bonus to VIT.
** Recording Undead grants a bonus to Infliction.
** Recording Reptiles grants a bonus to DEX.
** Recording Beasts grants a bonus to Evasion.
** Recording Avians grants a bonus to AGI.
** Recording Tsukumogami grants a bonus to Resistance.
** Recording Immortals grants a bonus to INT.
** Recording Giants grants a bonus to STR.
** Recording Elementals grants HP and MP Regen.
** Recording Foreign Gods grants Divine Shield.
** Recording Dragons grants bonuses to HP and MP.
** Recording Yukkuris grants bonuses to EXP and Pow Gain.
* SupportPartyMember: Akyuu is not very strong in combat at first, so until she's got some kills under her belt, this is her primary gimmick. This is especially poignant given her Commander Bonus, which doubles the drop rate of items, and her Omen skill tree, which, when fully invested into, grants bonuses to the rate at which EXP and Pow are earned.
** She is also great at facilitating Satori's skill learning, as through her skill trees and recording, she learns several skills that can be taught to Satori through her, most notably Heal, Area Heal, Raise Dead, Clearance and Refresh.
* ThePenIsMightier: Akyuu's signature weapon type, Brushes. A weak Stab-type weapon. Uniquely, Akyuu cannot equip any other weapon type. Levelling up the Skill Tree grants her a few rudimentary magic skills, as well.
* WeaksauceWeakness: She is, by default, weak to all three kinds of physical attacks, the most common attack types in the game.
* YouWillNotEvadeMe: Amongst the skills she can learn is Damage Net, a world skill which deals damage every turn and stops enemies from fleeing (seen on the Cyber Squids in Eientei). This prevents Yukkuris from escaping battle, making them relatively easy to kill, and thus, register in the Gensokyo Chronicle.
