It's revealed that Alan was an utter monster who, along with his crew, did horrific things in the Amazon for fame, greed and pleasure. Their atrocities included burning their huts with people inside it, gang-raping a woman--it's strongly implied that they murdered her and impaled her on a stick for their documentary--and being cruel to animals.
