Dragons are magnificent, if rarely seen, beings. Some are good, and others are bad (especially one in particular).

* AntiquatedLinguistics: Many of the dragons have archaic speech patterns. Justified given the time they lived.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: The title of "Dragon King" is bestowed onto those who prove their superiority over dragons in combat. Well, Acnologia drove the entire dragon race to near extinction, so you don't get any more superior than that.
* BizarreAlienBiology:
** As Elefseria reveals in 100 Years Quest, dragons seem to possess an odd biological HealingFactor, as when [[spoiler:his dragonification completed, his torn-out human heart from his battle with Dogramag was replaced by a newly-grown different organ rather than a new heart in general. And his original heart is still intact and beating on its own a century after the fact.]]
** 100 Years Quest also reveals that Dragon Lacrima, the PowerCrystal containing Dragon Slayer Magic, are in fact "processed" Dragon hearts.
* BreathWeapon: It's a shared trait of all dragons to have a breath related to their element with enough destructive power to obliterate an entire mountain range.
* ElementalPowers: Nearly all the dragons have powers over elements, with some of them being seemingly made of said elements; for example a rock dragon is literally made of rocks.
* HereThereWereDragons: A major plot point in the series' background is that the entire dragon race was wiped off the face of Earth-land in a cataclysmic event known as the Dragon King Festival, a civil war that broke out between dragons that feasted on humans and those that sought to coexist peacefully. To end the dispute, the pro-human dragons bestowed the art of Dragon Slayer magic on mankind, never considering that at least one of the humans hated all dragons enough to drive them to extinction.
* HoistByTheirOwnPetard: The dragons who opted for peaceful coexistence with humans wound up teaching them Dragon Slayer magic to fight those who opposed them. Unfortunately, this ended up giving birth to Acnologia, who proceeded to slaughter the entire race.
* TheJuggernaut: All but stated to be the strongest race in the series. They all have terrifying firepower, and nothing short of other dragons (or humans who've learned their magic) can make them so much as flinch.
* LongLived: They presumably have finite lifespans, as those of the Dragon Slayers' parents were stated to have been cut short after Acnologia stole their souls, but they are capable of surviving for centuries.
* NighInvulnerability: Aside from Dragon Slayer magic and other dragons, they are capable of shrugging off nearly any attack done them without any effort. Even an average one like Atlas Flame can laugh off Makarov, a Wizard Saint.
* NoSell: Magic of virtually every sort has no effect on them. Even attacks dealt by Wizard Saints Makarov and Jura, who are themselves established badasses among humans, are about as effective as mosquitoes against a jet plane. The only ones who stand any chance against them are Dragon Slayers, and even then, their magic is barely developed enough to pose anything more than an annoyance.
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: In terms of shape and appearance, they resemble Western dragons, but their role as near-divine creatures more closely resemble Eastern dragons.
* PhysicalGod: The dragon race as a whole is established as essentially being the most powerful beings in Earthland that aren't actually divine beings, so powerful that no magic save their own is capable of harming them, possessing destructive power capable of destroying mountains with ease, and until the development of Dragon Slaying magic they went unopposed as alpha predators only capable of being reliably bested by another dragon.
* TakesOneToKillOne: The only creatures capable of injuring a dragon is another dragon, or a Dragon Slayer with power equal to one. Demons may be an exception as Silver, a Demon Slayer, is able to freeze Atlas Flame solid. Then again, Atlas Flame was already dead at this point, being a spirit.
* UnwittingInstigatorOfDoom: Ultimately, the dragons are responsible for just about everything bad that happens in the series. One dragon destroyed Zeref's village, killing his family, which started Zeref down his path into TheDarkArts to resurrect them that turned him into the BigBad. Acnologia also saw his family and city killed by dragons, and proceeded to learn Dragon Slayer magic to get revenge, becoming the terrible Dragon King.

!!Dragon Slayers' Guardians

These dragons are the foster parents of the First-Generation and Third-Generation Dragon Slayers: Natsu, Gajeel, Wendy, Sting and Rogue. Under mysterious circumstances, they vanished without a trace on July 7 in the year X777, a whole seven years before the story begins. However, their true motives for doing so are even more mysterious...

* AllPowerfulBystander: Justified. The dragons spend the series LivingOnBorrowedTime due to having lost their souls to Acnologia, and they used up a good portion of their power to seal themselves inside their children to build up their immunity to dragonification, so they wouldn't be able to reseal themselves once they emerge. Because of this, they don't come out to save their children when it would be useful, most notably Acnologia's first attack on Sirius Island, until they are absolutely sure their children will never become dragons.
* AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence: Because they were Dead DeadAllAlong, they use up all of their remaining power to destroy Face and wound Acnologia, before fading away with the declaration that they will watch over mankind forevermore.
* BigDamnHeroes: Igneel shows up in the Tartaros arc to fight Acnologia, while the rest follow suit to wipe out all the Face bombs on the continent.
* DaddyHadAGoodReasonForAbandoningYou: Three, as it turns out: first, to prevent their children from turning into dragons like Acnologia, a fate shared by all Dragon Slayers; second, to get the jump on Acnologia once they were finished inoculating their kids; and third, to extend their own lives due to having lost their souls to Acnologia.
* DeusExitMachina: Just as soon as they come back to save the day in the Tartaros arc, they AscendToAHigherPlaneOfExistence, especially right when Jet expresses that having them as allies would make them invincible.
* DisappearsIntoLight: This happens to them as a result of their lifespan being cut short from Acnologia stealing their souls.
* GreaterScopeParagon: They continue to keep a close watch over their children while sealed inside them, protecting them from a curse that would turn them into dragons like Acnologia.
* HumansAreSpecial: This faction of dragons is a firm believer in this, using the last of their strength to ensure they continue to watch over mankind.
* ItWasWithYouAllAlong: The Tartaros arc reveals that the dragons were sealed within the Dragon Slayers throughout the entire series. They finally emerge when they have no choice but to intervene.
* LivingOnBorrowedTime: Since Acnologia stole their souls, the dragons had to seal themselves inside their children to ensure they lived long enough to see the success of their plan.
* MyGreatestFailure: They consider Acnologia to be a product of dragonkind's greatest mistake, and thus take it upon themselves to rid the world of him. However, they fail before they have the chance, leaving it to their children to finish the job.
* NiceJobBreakingItHero: Granted, at the time, they had a pretty good reason for wanting to stop Face. Unfortunately, it turns out that the Magic Council had an equally good reason for creating it: Face and Etherion were the only two things acting as Ishgal's equivalent of a nuclear deterrent against the Alvarez Empire, and now they know they're both out of commission...
* OnlyMostlyDead: Acnologia used his Dragon Slayer magic to reap their souls. By the time they took in their children, they were already dead and only had so much power to stop Acnologia, so they sealed themselves inside their children to ensure they would live long enough to kill Acnologia. They eventually run out of time after driving Acnologia off, and disappear into light.
* ParentalAbandonment: They each vanished without a trace around July 7, X777, seven years before the series began, leaving their kids all alone. In the case of Weisslogia and Skiadram, they were FakingTheDead and convinced their children that they killed them.
* ThePlan: It's revealed why they disappear much later in the story. They sealed their souls in Natsu and the other Dragon Slayers to create antibodies against dragonification. Zeref later reveals that they were also working with him to oppose Acnologia; the dragons came up with the plan of sending the children to the future through the Eclipse Gate from 400 years ago for their mission.
* SealedGoodInACan: They sealed themselves inside their own children, waiting for the ideal opportunity to rid the world of Acnologia's evil.
* WalkingSpoiler: Much of their roles and characterizations in the series are given upon their return.

The Fire Dragon King, and Natsu's foster father. He mysteriously disappeared seven years ago on July 7, X777, sending Natsu on a journey to find him. Despite this, he still has a way of watching over his son...
----
* ActionDad: He is Natsu's, though he's obviously not Natsu's biological father. For bonus points, they practically take on Acnologia and Mard Geer side by side, respectively.
* AntiMagic: Like Natsu, Igneel can unleash such intense flames they burn away magic spells. Noticably, Natsu just using the leftover magic Igneel left behind in his body to use Fire Dragon King Mode produced flames powerful enough to negate Zeref's Death Magic.
* AsskickingLeadsToLeadership: He is the Fire Dragon King, the mightiest of all fire dragons.
* BigGood: After spending most of the series as the GreaterScopeParagon, he takes this role by the time the Tartaros arc rolls around when he finally comes out of hiding to battle Acnologia. It doesn't last for long before the Dragon King kills him.
* BreathWeapon: His fire breath creates a huge explosion that can reduce a mountain to rubble.
* BrokeYourArmPunchingOutCthulhu: Igneel manages to tear off Acnologia's arm in a SingleStrokeBattle. His opponent in turn took away most of Igneel's torso before vaporizing him.
* DefiantToTheEnd: He bites off Acnologia's left arm before getting killed.
* DisappearedDad: To both of his sons.
** His disappearance on July 7, X777, motivates a big part of Natsu's determination to find him again, and it led him to the Fairy Tail guild. Though it turns out HeWasRightThereAllAlong.
** To his actual son Ignia, since male dragons as a rule don't raise children and leave that to the females after breeding season. Unlike Natsu, Ignia could really care less about him or his fate as a result since he never really had a connection.
* DoNotGoGentle: Igneel manages to tear off Acnologia's arm while lunging in for an all to certain suicide attack.
* FamilyUnfriendlyDeath: Acnologia rips right through half of his torso before turning him into a smoldering corpse with his BreathWeapon.
* FireIsRed: Has red scales, and is the king of the fire dragons who taught Natsu his signature magic, whose colour matches his own.
* FriendlyTarget: His surrogate son Natsu gets a front-row seat to Igneel's horrific death at the hands of Acnologia, which fuels his motivation to slay the Dragon King.
* GlowingEyesOfDoom: He is commonly depicted as having glowing pupil-less eyes, though his scenes with Natsu show him with normal eyes.
* GoodScarsEvilScars: His body is covered with scars.
* GreaterScopeParagon: For the majority of the series, Igneel was simply Natsu's father figure and major motivation for adventuring in Fairy Tail, the values he instilled in Natsu forming the basis upon which the guild built up. As more information was revealed, he quickly started becoming Acnologia's counterpart, especially with the revelation that he was TheLeader of the Dragon Slayer's Dragon parents, the one who planned their strategy to both protect their adoptive children and face the Dragon King, and by far the strongest creature on their side of the conflict. Zirconis strongly implies that he was the dragon who started the Dragon King Festival to protect humanity. However, it would not be until the Tartaros arc that Igneel would finally be forced to make his reappearance, and indeed have most of the information on what he was doing behind the scenes revealed post-death.
* GrinOfAudacity: Gives a daring grin several times in his fight with Acnologia, greatly boosting his resemblance to Natsu.
* HotBlooded: Proves that Natsu took after him greatly when he gets fired up to fight against Acnologia.
* LargeHam: Flashbacks in the manga show him smiling and laughing heartily with the young Natsu. And then there's his big introduction when Grandeeney pesters him at the end of the Tower of Heaven arc (moved to the Fighting Festival arc in the anime), where he demands she not anger "THE MIGHTY IGNEEL!!"
* MeaningfulName: "Igneel" sounds similar to "ignis", the Latin root for the word "fire".
* NeverSpeakIllOfTheDead: After his death, his fellow dragons ask the humans not to remember him for his failure to kill Acnologia once and for all, but as a noble dragon and leader who loved humankind more than any other.
* ObiWanMoment: He spends part of his battle with Acnologia wearing a resigned smile, knowing he doesn't have long to live anyway, and gives one last Telepathy telepathic message to Natsu telling him how the days they spent together were the happiest in his life.
* PlayingWithFire: He's a fire dragon who taught Fire Dragon Slayer magic to Natsu, after all.
* RevengeBeforeReason: He admits that part of the reason he hid himself within Natsu was so he could have a go at Acnologia himself. He nearly succeeds, too, at least until Acnologia gets his second wind...
* ScarsAreForever: He has several scars from battle on his face.
* Tsundere: Shown to be smiling and laughing when near Natsu in flashbacks, but is far more rude and bad-tempered when Grandeeney's around.
* WhatTheHellHero: Natsu gives Igneel a long-anticipated earful after all the years he spent missing.
* WorfHadTheFlu: His attacks barely even tickle Acnologia, and all Igneel manages to do is tear off his arm. This is later explained because his life force was drained by Acnologia long ago, and thus he was already half dead to begin with.
* WorthyOpponent: Acnologia acknowledges him as one, which is why he is both willing to speak to him and actually try his best to kill him instead of simply toying with him.
* WreathedInFlames: Like Natsu, flames coat his body when he's pumped up or angered.

The Sky Dragon and Wendy's foster mother. She mysteriously vanished just like Igneel and Metalicana.
----
* BlowYouAway: Her sky magic allows her to manipulate winds.
* DubNameChange: The Japanese pronunciation of her name is "GRAN-dee-nay", similar to how it's spelled by the Del Rey manga. The Funimation dub, however, calls her "gran-DEE-nuh".
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: She first appears with the standard quadrupedal dragon design, as well as a fairly ferocious appearance. When she reappears during the Tartaros arc, her wings have replaced her forelimbs, giving her a wyvern-like design, and her face is given a more overtly feminine and kind look that bears a closer resemblance to Porlyusica, her human counterpart.
* FeatheredDragons: She's a white, wyvern-like dragon with birdlike wings.
* FriendToAllLivingThings: Wendy notes that she is extremely kind to humans. It's an indicator that the human-hating Porlyusica, despite having Grandeeney's voice and scent, is not the Grandeeney she knows.
* GoodParents: From all accounts, Grandeeney raised Wendy like her own daughter. In 100 Years Quest, Ignia reveals that female dragons as a rule are the ones to raise dragon children after breeding season while males go off on their own, which would explain retroactively why Grandeeney and Wendy's relationship seems to have been the best of all the Slayers and Dragon parents save Natsu and Igneel.
* LightIsGood: She is a white dragon who loved and raised Wendy as her own, and is a FriendToAllLivingThings.
* MeaningfulName: "Grandeeney" is an alternate spelling of "grandine", which is is Italian for "hail".
* TheSmurfettePrinciple: She is the only female among the Dragon Slayers' guardians and until the introduction of Selene in 100 Years Quest was the only confirmed female dragon in the series.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: The Kodansha translation occasionally spells her name as "Grandine", a more accurate translation of the word it's based on.

The Iron Dragon who raised Gajeel. He disappeared on the same day as Igneel and Grandeeney, but unlike Natsu and Wendy, Gajeel couldn't care less about what happened to him.
----
* EarlyInstallmentCharacterDesignDifference: In the brief glimpses that we get of him during the Edolas arc, his head is elliptical and his body is mostly smooth. When we finally get a good look at him at the end of the Tartaros arc, his head is flatter and squared, and his body looks like armor.
* ExtraOreDinary: He's the Iron Dragon. To emphasize this, his scales make him look like he's wearing a suit of plate armor.
* JerkWithAHeartOfGold: Implied to be one by Gajeel. When they meet again after the dragons return, Metalicana's first words to Gajeel are that he still has that evil look in his eyes from his youth/looks like he just ate a bunch of rust, yet he says it with a big grin on his face. He says and does so again as his borrowed time runs out.
* MeaningfulName: Has the word "metal" in his name. Not the most subtle of meanings...
* ShoutOut: Mashima confirmed that his name is a direct reference to Music/Metallica. Quite fitting for a character whose foster son wound up in a guild called "Phantom Lord".Itself a ShoutOut to one of Metallica's songs

The White Dragon and Shadow Dragon who raised Sting and Rogue, respectively. They offered their lives to their children in a gambit to give them the experience of killing a dragon, technically making them "true" Dragon Slayers.
----
* CastingAShadow: Skiadram has shadowy "hair" running down his back, and leaves a trail of shadow behind him as he flies.
* DarkIsNotEvil: Skiadram has pitch-black scales and a terrifying appearance, but he not only raised Rogue to become a man who cherished his friends, he also came to mankind's rescue by destroying the Face bombs that threatened to eradicate all magic.
* FakingTheDead: They never died, but rather hid themselves inside their children and gave them FakeMemories of killing them, all as part of an experiment to simulate the effects of dragonization without actually turning into a dragon.
* HolyHandGrenade: Weisslogia's power utilizes the element of holiness to purify evil and create bursts of light.
* LightIsGood: Weisslogia taught White Dragon Slayer magic to Sting, and was a major participant in the plan to slay Acnologia.
* MeaningfulName: Weissor more accurately weiß is German for "white", while skia is Greek for "shadow".
* MemoryGambit: They wanted to give Sting and Rogue the experience of killing a dragon while also preventing them from becoming one, so they gave the two FakeMemories of slaying them.
* MercyKill: Skiadram's cover story for his death was that he was deathly ill and suffering badly, requesting Rogue to put him out of his misery.
* MetaphoricallyTrue: While it turns out Sting and Rogue never killed them, they say there is some truth to saying they are dead since they were LivingOnBorrowedTime long before they took the two Dragon Slayers in.
* PosthumousCharacter: Subverted. They are thought to have been killed by Sting and Rogue before the story began, but it turns out they were only FakingTheDead.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: Skiadram is called "Skiadrum" in the English dub.
* ThanatosGambit: Subverted. On paper, their plan was to make Sting and Rogue "true" Dragon Slayers by letting themselves be killed. In reality, doing this would seriously risk turning Sting and Rogue into dragons, which they wanted to avoid at all costs. Thus, the true purpose of their plan was to give their children FakeMemories of killing them to see if they could simulate the effects of dragonification without putting them at risk.

!!Eclipse Dragons

During the Grand Magic Games, Future Rogue tricks Princess Hisui into opening the Eclipse Gate so he can summon these seven dragons from 400 years in the past to defeat Acnologia. Unlike the Dragon Slayers' guardians, who desired peace with humans, a good number of these dragons would rather have mankind at the bottom of the food chain.

* AdaptationExpansion: The anime goes into further detail on how much trouble they give the Dragon Slayers, even showing the fatal mistakes that would've allowed the dragons to kill them if Ultear didn't reverse time and allow them to avoid their own deaths.
* HeroKiller: If not for Ultear's Last Age's spell turning the tables, they would've killed their Dragon Slayer opponents.
* MoreThanMindControl: Though Future Rogue uses his Dragon Supremacy magic to get the dragons to do his bidding, a number of them outright state that they love terrorizing humans and wrecking everything that they honestly don't care they're being controlled. Indeed, when Natsu reveals his relation to Igneel, Atlas Flame is able to shrug off said control and fight against Future Rogue and the other dragons rather easily through willpower and determination.
* OurDragonsAreDifferent: Their designs vary drastically but are predominantly European in appearance, from more conventional-looking dragons like Zirconis to ones made entirely out of their elements such as Atlas Flame.
* PutOnABus: They're forced to return to the past at the end of the Grand Magic Games arc after Eclipse is destroyed. Since most of them were wiped out in the past, this results in a BusCrash for most of them.
* WakeUpCallBoss: As Mavis notes after the dragons return to the past, none of the Dragon Slayers actually managed to slay a single dragon, all of which are said to not even be on Acnologia's level. Even worse, at least one of them (Zirconis) was killed by Acnologia in the past when said dragon was able to handle blows from Wendy and Laxus working together in the present, which goes even further to demonstrate how little a chance Fairy Tail stood against him on Sirius Island and how far they are behind him even now.
* WeHardlyKnewYe: Besides Zirconis and Atlas Flame, these dragons hardly get any development except that they hate humans. Two of them aren't even named.

The Jade Dragon. He was killed 400 years ago by Acnologia during the dragons' civil war, in which he opposed those who wanted to live in harmony with humans. Wendy resurrects his spirit for information on what happened to her, Natsu, and Gajeel's dragon parents. He appears later as one of the seven dragons Future Rogue summons from the Eclipse Gate.
----
* BewareTheSillyOnes: Even though he's pretty much a joke compared to the other dragons, Zirconis isn't any less dangerous as he manages to NoSell Mira's Satan Soul attacks as if they were nothing, and gets the upper hand against Wendy and Laxus at once.
* TheCameo: He makes an appearance in TheStinger of the movie Anime/FairyTailDragonCry, including a blink-and-you'll-miss-it glimpse of his death at Acnologia's hands.
* DirtyOldMan: Shows shades of it when he declares he prefers to eat women over men, and proceeds to zap Lucy's clothes to oblivion.
* EmeraldPower: Is called the Jade Dragon, and while not on the level of Igneel or Acnologia proved powerful enough to serve as a WakeUpCallBoss to the likes of Wendy and Laxus.
* FlightStrengthHeart: Compared to the other dragons, all Zirconis's BreathWeapon does is non-lethally vaporize human clothing and invoke DefeatByModesty. He still poses a serious threat because even without any unique power, just being a dragon is one hell of an advantage in and of itself.
* TheGadfly: His ghost scares the heroes with musings of eating them just to see their reaction since he can't touch them anyway as a ghost.
* Jerkass: He's so despicable the way he uses magic to humiliate humans, it prods Wendy into trying to take him down after she'd been reluctant to lift a finger against him.
* MrExposition: As a ghost, he reveals the history of dragons, Dragon Slayers, and the Dragon King Acnologia to Fairy Tail.
* TheNudifier: His BreathWeapon renders any human he uses it on butt naked. He claims to use it because clothing ruins the flavor, but its true purpose is to rob humans of their dignity.
* OurGhostsAreDifferent: A ghost dragon.
* RedBaron: The Jade Dragon, named more for the color of his scales than his actual power. Hisui (whose name means Jade) actually gives him the title in the present to distract him while he's returning to the past.
* ToServeMan: He's an eater of humans and damn proud of it. He even considers 400 years ago to be a peaceful era because dragons were top of the food chain and could eat humans as they pleased.
* StrokeTheBeard: Often does this with his chin tendrils.

!!Atlas Flame
!!!Voiced by: Takashi Matsuyama (Japanese), Creator/KennyGreen (English)

The Hell Flame Dragon whose entire body is covered in flames, and is an old friend of Igneel's. He is also the founder of the Village of the Sun, a village of giants where his spirit serves as its guardian deity, the Eternal Flame.
----
* BackForTheDead: He's actually already dead upon his return in the Sun Village arc, but he still sacrifices what remains of his spirit to save the village.
* EntertaininglyWrong: He once heard that Igneel couldn't kill E.N.D., the demon Zeref created to be his most powerful, so Atlas Flame naturally concludes that Igneel must have battled and failed to defeat such a terrifying creature, and tells Natsu thusly. Little does he realize, Natsu is E.N.D., and Zeref only ever expected him to grow like a normal human and live up to that hype someday. Until that day would come, E.N.D. was just a weak little kid that Igneel could have easily squished with his finger if he wanted to; it's just that Igneel never tried because he loved E.N.D. like a son all the same.
* GiantFlyer: Serves as one for Natsu after his HeelFaceTurn.
* HeelFaceTurn: After finding out that Natsu is Igneel's son, he overcomes Future Rogue's control and helps Natsu fight him.
* Hellfire: He describes the flames covering his body as such, and was even named the Hell Flame Dragon in VideoGame/FairyTail2020. Natsu ends up getting a massive PowerUp by consuming them.
* HeroicSacrifice: He sacrifices his consciousness to melt the ice freezing the Village of the Sun and save the giants.
* HonoraryUncle: Natsu calls him "Uncle" after Atlas Flame reveals he's a friend of his father, Igneel. In turn, Atlas Flame immediately accepts him as family simply for being Igneel's adoptive child.
* LivingMacGuffin: He's the Eternal Flame that protects Sun Village, though he's far from alive in this form.
* MeaningfulName: "Atlas" is the name of a Greek Titan condemned to hold up the sky for eternity. He winds up forming the Village of the Sun, which is inhabited by giants.
* MrExposition: He's the one who warns Fairy Tail about E.N.D. and Silver in the Sun Village arc, setting the stage for the Tartaros arc. However, he turns out to be an UnreliableExpositor on the former subject, as he misinterprets who exactly E.N.D. is and what Igneel's connection to him is like.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: VideoGame/FairyTail2020 gives the name of his magic as Hell Flame Dragon Slayer Magic.
* NighInvulnerable: He's capable of burning any magic that touches him, and was even able to shrug off a shot from Motherglare's mountain-destroying Dragon's Roar without issue. That changes when Silver, the Ice Demon Slayer, freezes him solid along with the rest of Sun Village, though it should be noted by that point Atlas Flame was already dead and only a spirit.
* PlayingWithFire: Igneel is not the only dragon who has dominion over fire.
* SealedGoodInACan: He gets frozen by Silver as the Eternal Flame, which winds up keeping the rest of Sun Village frozen.
* TokenGoodTeammate: Even before his HeelFaceTurn, his personality was generally one of the more respectful of the Eclipse Dragons towards his human foes.
* UnreliableExpositor: It's through him that Fairy Tail and the audience learn about E.N.D., how this demon is the most wicked of Zeref's creations, and how he's so powerful that the mighty dragon Igneel could not defeat him. However, the later reveal that Natsu was E.N.D. all along, and that Igneel never made the attempt to kill his own adoptive son, shows that Atlas Flame was misinformed.
* WreathedInFlames: He apparently has flames instead of flesh, giving him the appearance of a burning dragon skeleton. It also allows him to burn away all but the strongest attacks.
* YouHaveGotToBeKiddingMe: His reaction to Natsu boasting about eating him. Makes sense; he's a dragon and Natsu is a human. That should be the other way around.
* YouRemindMeOfX: As Natsu starts trying to eat him and refuses to fall off no matter what Atlas Flame bucks himself into, he can't help but be reminded of his close friend Igneel. This prompts him to ask what Natsu's relationship to Igneel is, and thus cements his HeelFaceTurn when he learns Natsu is Igneel's adopted son.

The Diamond Dragon with indestructible adamantine scales and the ability to birth hundreds of deadly dragon young at once.
----
* AmbiguousGender: Motherglare's actual gender hasn't been confirmed, which isn't helped by their deep and androgynous voice in the anime. However, they're referred to as the "mother dragon" in the official translation, and characters reference that this dragon lives up to the "mother" portion of their name.
* BreathWeapon: Motherglare can fire a Dragon's Roar large enough to easily eclipse a mountain, and the hatchlings can fire smaller but still deadly beams of energy from their mouths capable of easily killing even a powerful mage.
* EvilCannotComprehendGood: In the anime, Motherglare questions why Atlas Flame would ever want to help humans when he betrays the dragons to help Natsu, the son of his friend Igneel.
* GiantFlyer: Serves as this to Future Rogue during the final battle of the Grand Magic Games arc. He's also the largest of the seven dragons.
* HeroKiller: Motherglare's hatchlings manage to kill several prominent wizards--including Gray, Macao, Droy, and Bacchus--before Ultear turns back time and saves them.
* MookMaker: S/he can somehow give birth to hundreds of eggs at a time, which immediately hatch into dragonlings. In contrast to actual dragons, these dragonlings can be killed by otherwise run-of-the-mill magic, but they can still take a pounding and in turn can easily kill high-level mages on their own, to say nothing of drowning them in sheer numbers.
* MotherOfAThousandYoung: Creates miniature dragon creatures by jettisoning eggs from its chest.
* NamedByTheAdaptation: VideoGame/FairyTail2020 names Motherglare's magic specifically as Diamond Dragon Slayer Magic.
* NighInvulnerability: His/her scales are made of adamantium and impervious to even other dragons' attacks as shown by his/her clash with Atlas Flame. It's worth noting that these scales are so hard, they demolish the Eclipse Gate when Motherglare falls on it.
* SpellMyNameWithAnS: The Funimation subtitles spell it as "Mother Glare".
* RedEyesTakeWarning: Has red eyes in the anime.

* MeaningfulName: Yes, he's the one with the giant pincer-like appendages coming out of his face.
* NonElemental: His BreathWeapon in the anime manifests as a WaveMotionGun.
* PurpleIsPowerful: Has reddish-purple scales in the anime.
* ShoutOut: His roar in the anime is identical to Franchise/Godzilla's.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: He doesn't work well with the more intellectual Levia.

* BeardOfEvil: Despite his ichthyian appearance, he sports a beard at the tip of his chin.
* BreakThemByTalking: He tries to do this to Rogue by revealing it was his future self who brought them to the present. Before the time reset, he eventually just resorts to taking Rogue by force when he doesn't cooperate.
* DarkIsEvil: He has an extremely dark coloration in the anime.
* MeaningfulName: His name is derived from "Leviathan", a giant sea monster, to go with his aquatic attributes.
* SlasherSmile: Even by dragon standards, he's constantly grinning.
* TeethClenchedTeamwork: He doesn't enjoy working with the more brutish Scissor Runner.

* GlowingEyesOfDoom: In contrast to most other dragons.
* NoNameGiven: One of only two dragons to receive no name, and is even credited simply as "Rock Dragon" in the anime.
* NoSell: Ichiya tries knocking it out using parfum derived from his own body odor. Normally this would work due to a dragon's keen sense of smell...except this dragon has no nose.
* NotDistractedByTheSexy: Jenny's attempts to seduce the dragon are a hopeless effort.
* RockMonster: He's essentially a living, breathing pile of rocks in the shape of a dragon.

A Sage Dragon who served as Irene's adviser and friend 400 years ago. After he died in the Dragon King Festival, Irene adopted his name as her own in his memory.
----
* HeroicSacrifice: He dies protecting Irene in the Dragon King Festival.
* IOweYouMyLife: Irene's ancestor saved his life long ago. Ever since, he devoted himself to protecting her family, to the point where he allowed her to create Dragon Slayer magic.
* MagicEnhancement: The default ability of a Sage Dragon is to increase their strength and magic exponentially.
* MySpeciesDothProtestTooMuch: He was a strong supporter of the pro-coexistence side of the Dragon Civil War, and found the act of dragons eating humans to be morally abhorrent. As such, he supported Irene's invention of Dragon Slayer magic, ultimately sealing the fate of his entire species.
* PosthumousCharacter: His role is told through flashbacks, seeing how he died during the historic Dragon King Festival.
* Protectorate: Belserion considered all humans to be this, Irene's family in particular.
* WalkingSpoiler: His name alone reveals the connection Irene, a member of the Spriggan 12, has to dragons. It's no accident that her last name is Belserion, either, as she was the Dragon Queen whose family was a good friend of his.

Not all dragons start out that way. As a side-effect of Dragon Slayer magic, those who rely too much on it will eventually transform into dragons themselves. These are the unfortunate few who have fully succumbed to dragonification.

* BlessedWithSuck: Although being turned into dragons makes them unfathomably powerful and virtually invincible, they also lose their sense of humanity and can no longer lead ordinary lives. And even if they somehow manage to regain their human forms, they will be unable to readjust to human senses such as taste and touch, and they'll experience unfathomable agony.
* ReallySevenHundredYearsOld: They have existed as humans since the dragon civil war 400 years in the past, yet their slowed aging process as dragons has allowed them to remain alive well into the present day.
* VoluntaryShapeshifting: Through various means, they are able to assume forms identical to how they originally appeared as humans, though they are unable to retain their human senses. However, their dragon form is their "default" form.
* WasOnceAMan: Their draconic forms are the ultimate fate of those who use too much Dragon Slayer magic.
