* DarknessInducedAudienceApathy: The story's in danger of becoming this.
** On one side, Mossflower is a CrapsackWorld. [[AnyoneCanDie The death rate is absurdly high]], even for ''Literature/{{Redwall}}'' standards. Named characters from Kurwin's crew and the Long Patrol are slain constantly, and minor characters [[RedShirt tend to be killed off or forgotten about before they leave their mark in the story]]. Tegast's storyline is the only subplot that has yet to kill off anyone major, save for a few [[AssholeVictim Asshole Victims]].
** On the other side, a chunk of the cast is unlikable. Urthquake is a DesignatedHero whose corrupt actions are badly influencing his troops, and sometimes it can be hard to sympathize with them since [[ProtagonistCenteredMorality they look the other way when Urthquake does anything "evil"]]. Kurwin is an AntiVillain and more of his crew is a bit more sympathetic, but that doesn't change the fact that they're trying to take over Mossflower, and are more than happy to kill anyone in their way to achieve said goal. Again, most of the likable characters (excluding [[TheHorde Krassak's lizards]]) come from Tegast's storyline, and even they are flawed.

* TheWoobie: Benrath Brugo. [[spoiler:His parents were murdered when he was a babe, his adoptive father abused and raped him constantly throughout his life, and some members of the Guosim bullied him for being gay. Just when things start looking up for him, he's brutally gang-raped by Rowgat and several monitors]].
