Although nothing he does justifies his brutal fate (he's murdered by one of the Skulls), in his last days he breaks several laws and and rules of journalism. In addition to disgustedly berating his best friend for joining the Skulls, Will breaks into Caleb's car, steals his book and key and trespasses on private property. (This is before The Skulls have done anything nefarious that we the audience know of). Will didn't deserve to die, but had he lived he would have been looking at serious criminal charges and a likely roadblock to a journalism career. See IdiotBall above.
