* AlternativeCharacterInterpretation: The idealised family at the company picnic are shown at Monroe's therapy clinic blatantly miserable, suggesting that, like Homer with his family, they were just pretending to be a functional, loving family in front of the boss, only they were more competent at it. Given they refuse to break character even afterwards, even when Homer prods the father, it's also possible that, even more like Homer, they wanted to keep up this perfect image and reached breaking point with it later.

* AlternativeJokeInterpretation: Homer telling Bart not to correct Mr. Burns and addressing him as "Brat" after Burns mistakenly did the same. Is it because Mr. Burns is Homer's boss and Homer knows that it isn't wise to infer to his employer that he made a mistake, or is it because Bart is such a mischievous troublemaker that calling him "Brat" isn't exactly wrong?

* SignatureScene: The family shocking each other in Dr. Monroe’s office.
* ValuesDissonance: Having the father be the OnlySaneMan in a sitcom family is something that was already starting to become a DiscreditedTrope when the episode first aired, and nowadays would just be seen as patronising sexism. Today, either the mother would be the only sane person, the father would share the role of sanity with one of their children (usually a daughter for gender balance), or all the members of the family would be equally dysfunctional, just in different ways. Of course the first of those options has become played out enough to become [[WomenAreWiser an infamous trope]] and has had many subversions.

* BaseBreakingCharacter: Dr. Marvin Monroe. A lot of fans ''really'' hate his voice (Harry Shearer hated voicing him because it strained his vocal cords) and how condescending he is. Others doesn't find him any better or worse than any of the other characters.

* ValuesDissonance: Having the father be the OnlySaneMan in a sitcom family is something that you'd almost never see nowadays; at best it'd be considered a DiscreditedTrope, and at worst it'd be seen as patronising sexism. Today, either the mother would be the only sane person, or all the members of the family would be equally dysfunctional, just in different ways.
