* PresumedFlop: The film has often been described as a bomb by movie journalists. Its $192 million gross was a severe disappointment, no doubt about it, but it still ended up just barely earning back its $99 million budget in theaters (and toy sales put it firmly in the black). This still wasn't enough for Warner Bros. though, and they let their rights to the franchise lapse.

** Having had to deal with Duplo invasions for years that left Bricksburg in a permanent state of post-apocalyptic disrepair, is it any wonder why the inhabitants of Apocalypseburg are distrustful of ''anything'' from the Systar System?

* CrackPairing: There are people out there that ship [[spoiler: [[ScrewYourself Emmet/Rex]]]]. That is all.

** While all of the new introduced characters get some sort of recognition, Susan is by far the character that many would call wasted, since the movie actively subverts PrincessesRule. However, she doesn't have much dialogue and her relationship with the Queen or other Systarians isn't explored at all.

** Lord Business [[ScrewThisImOuttaHere immediately leaving once the Duplo Aliens show up]], prevented an interesting plot about him dealing with his city being wrecked and him adjusting to the apocalypse. There is also the fact that, if he was also kidnapped, it's likely that he would've been married off to Queen Watevra instead of [[spoiler:Batman]], since he is [[CallBack the leader of Octan corporation and the world]]. [[spoiler: To be fair, in the movie, Lord Business staying out of the plot mirrors Finn and Bianca's father being absent save for a flashback and an occasional line of dialogue off-camera.]]

* RootingForTheEmpire: [[spoiler:Fans of Rex Dangervest wanted Rex to win because nobody came back for him when he was Emmet in another timeline. And many felt everyone (minus Emmet) deserved their fate of being trapped in the Bin of Storajj (The Systarians for "brainwashing" and kidnapping, the Apocalypseburgers for choosing not to help Emmet and for their jerkass attitude, Emmet's friends for dancing all day, and Lucy for keeping secrets to Emmet about her true self). Then again, he did send Emmet to Undar of the Dryar System and tried to break him in pieces, so it's good that Lucy and the others came back to save Emmet from his horrible fate.]]

* StrangledByTheRedString: [[spoiler:Batman & Queen Watevra could be seen as this. The only reason Watevra wanted to marry him is to unite their kingdoms and make peace. Meanwhile, Batman wasn't interested in her until she [[ReversePsychology said she really wanted Superman]]. They fall for each other when they both recognize that they're lonely and only had their servants for company most of their lives. Afterwards, they become smitten with each other-[[SickeninglySweetHearts much to Ice Cream Cone's annoyance]]. Possibly justified, as this relationship is being acted out by a young girl who most likely doesn't know how to develop romantic relationships properly yet.]]

*** Later, some people became more fond of drawing her as a muscular woman, which, while still a lot more attractive she really is, is also a lot more accurate to her character.

* AngstWhatAngst: [[spoiler:Rex Dangervest (who is revealed to be Emmet from an alternate future) wants to get revenge on the Apocalypseburg citizens and the Systar System inhabitants for seemingly abandoning him on Undar of the Dryar System. He is also angry at them for saying that he's not tough and used those insults to give him strength. However, when talking to present-day Emmet about his true motives, Rex never mentions how the citizens' insults. Implying that although he is mad at them, he's more upset that they abandoned him at all instead of also insulting him.]]

* SpiritualAdaptation: Stop me if you've heard this one. [[spoiler:A cynical future version of the idealistic main character travels back in time to break his past self's ideals. Said past self learns skills from said future self, under the advice that he needs to visualize his success, and ends up finding a solution to his inner conflict by adopting a more nuanced version of his previously-held ideals.]] In this sense, this film is startlingly similar to
''Anime/FateStayNightUnlimitedBladeWorks''.

** Balthazar, for being a rare AffectionateParody of [[Literature/{{Twilight}} Edward Cullen]]. His chemistry with Unikitty also helps.

* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** The first movie received some backlash for only having a few major female characters, and for amounting Wyldstyle/Lucy's character development to letting a man fulfill her dreams of saving the world. ''The Daily Mail'' reported afterwards that animation supervisor Chris [=McKay=] admitted feeling unsure if the final movie passed UsefulNotes/TheBechdelTest[[note]]Wyldstyle and Unikitty have a conversation regarding the existence of both "no negativity" and the word "no" in Cloud Cuckoo Land, but it only lasts two sentences.[[/note]], and that he promised a stronger female presence in the second movie, which he wound up executive-producing. Indeed, ''The Second Part'' does add some more female major characters, gives them and Lucy some motives and arcs that don't revolve entirely around the men, and allows them to converse at length on topics other than guys.
** Related to the above, previous LEGO movies caught some flack for subjecting their women to "The [[Franchise/TheMatrix Trinity]] Syndrome", relegating them to essentially sidekicks of men who seem too incompetent for most of the story. ''The Second Part'' breaks Lucy out of this by giving her the most fleshed-out arc among the main characters, and by centering the climax around [[spoiler:her saving Emmet, then destroying Rex.]]
** ''WesternAnimation/TheLEGONinjagoMovie'''s realistic outdoor environments faced a bit of criticism for being too much of a departure from the BuiltWithLEGO aesthetic. The trailer shows that while the film still uses some of the particle effects from the spinoffs, it's dialed back the more realistic elements in favor of the toy aesthetic, and any non-LEGO elements in the final film can still be found in a child's bedroom.
** Lord and Miller [[https://www.slashfilm.com/the-lego-movie-2-setting-post-apocalypse-everything-is-awesome/ admitted]] that a lot of people misunderstood the point of "Everything Is Awesome" and didn't realize it wasn't meant to be taken literally, and part of this film's reprise "Everything's Not Awesome" is about clarifying the song's actual message:

The moment Emmet asks for their help, they downright refuse. It doesn't help that Sweet Mayhem, [[spoiler:who turned out to be good]] and [[JerkassBall Wyldstyle/Lucy kind of join in too]]. These actions make these [[JerkAss "heroes"]] all the more loathsome than [[spoiler:[[BigBad Rex Dangervest]]]].
