* BrokenBase: Akira's AdaptationalHeroism in the light novel is the subject of much debate, as several scenes that demonstrated his ruthlessness like his murder of other street orphans in self-defense are removed. Fans bicker over whether this and his expanded relationships with characters like Yumina make him a more cookie-cutter or rounded protagonist, as some preferred it when the author went all in on his BlueAndOrangeMorality while others believe that having more characters interact with Akira opens new and more interesting moral dilemmas.

That last line feels like missing the point. The argument wasn't that "Unwitting Pawn = Vanilla Protagonist", but rather that being a Vanilla Protagonist led to Akira also looking like an Unwitting Pawn. Even if you remove that aspect of his character, every other argument made in this entry still stands.

* VanillaProtagonist: Akira has been criticized as being fairly bland and lacking overarching goals aside from staying safe, making money, and becoming a better hunter to eventually live up to his end of the contract he has with Alpha. His meek quietness outside of his cold-blooded moments in combat means that his interactions with others are often seen as bland while making his nature as a PinballProtagonist and UnwittingPawn for Alpha even more blatant. The manga adaptation seems to acknowledge and address this by making Akira more assertive, snarky, and headstrong... Later web-novel chapters prove he's not actually so unwitting, as well.

This is now a Trivia trope that requires explicit confirmation by the creators.

* AuthorsSavingThrow:
** Akira's tendency to be a PinballProtagonist who follows all of Alpha's instructions to a T is not lost on the author. So the manga adaptation makes Akira significantly more headstrong and vocal about his thoughts. While he's still an UnwittingPawn to Alpha, he explains his thoughts more clearly, is more willing to butt heads with others, and acts of his own volition more often, often to Alpha's frustration as she tries to solidify her control over him.
** And then there's how eventually in the web novels, Akira explains how he's perfectly aware of her manipulations, and besides it being her self-interest he trusts in rather than in her, he has his own moral code compelling him to work with her.

* DiagnosedByTheAudience: The narration in the web novel makes repeated references to Akira being born with a "distorted" personality. While he understands the notions of right and wrong, [[BlueAndOrangeMorality he tends to work off priorities and his sense of fairness than traditional morality.]] His indifference to murder is startling, but his interactions with the people closest to him make it clear that he's far from being a sociopath and displays a childlike innocence when his guard is down. This is on top of his nearly nonexistent sex drive despite being able to appreciate physical beauty outside of clothing and getting embarrassed when Sara, Elena, and Alpha flirt with him. But even more overt acts of sex fail to get any kind of reaction from him.

If that's the case, this entry shouldn't be here. A character who is meant to be hated can't be The Scrappy.

* TheScrappy: Katsuya is generally agreed to be the most reviled character in the story. His constant HotBlooded ChronicHeroSyndrome is out of place in the setting, he's a GreenEyedMonster to Akira and can't help but try to one-up him, and generally falls into the GoodIsDumb and HeroicWannabe trap. Lilina is arguably even worse, given her bratty NeverMyFault attitude and tendency to be Katsuya's YesMan and not getting much development beyond that. [[TropesAreTools This was probably the point]], given the context so far seemingly tries to make it come off as a bit of a {{Deconstruction}} of the usual StockShonenHero trope and thus an unlikeable, self-righteous jackass.
