  • Alternate Character Interpretation:
    • The differences between Akira's character from the Web Novels to the Light Novels have invited criticism that he's less of an Anti-Hero, a claim which gets disputed. People who agree with the assessment tend to see the Web Novels as better.
    • Alpha invites a some of this, especially among manga-only fans, among whom some Mentor Ship her with Akira. This can be No Yay for people who've read her more duplicitous actions in the novels.
  • Broken Base: Akira's Adaptational Heroism in the light novel is the subject of much debate, as several scenes that demonstrated his ruthlessness like his murder of other street orphans in self-defense are removed. Fans bicker over whether this and his expanded relationships with characters like Yumina make him a more cookie-cutter or rounded protagonist, as some preferred it when the author went all in on his Blue-and-Orange Morality while others believe that having more characters interact with Akira opens new and more interesting moral dilemmas.
  • Diagnosed by the Audience: The narration in the web novel makes repeated references to Akira being born with a "distorted" personality. While he understands the notions of right and wrong, he tends to work off priorities and his sense of fairness than traditional morality. His indifference to murder is startling, but his interactions with the people closest to him make it clear that he's far from being a sociopath and displays a childlike innocence when his guard is down. This is on top of his nearly nonexistent sex drive despite being able to appreciate physical beauty outside of clothing and getting embarrassed when Sara, Elena, and Alpha flirt with him. But even more overt acts of sex fail to get any kind of reaction from him.
  • Fridge Brilliance:
    • Nelia's Insane Troll Logic that Akira calls her out for, actually makes perfect sense once we learn more about her. Basically, her mission for Kain to do the relic heist, demanded that she kill Akira to complete it, thanks to Yajima's Betrayal Insurance stranding them until they do. Due to Nelia being a Consummate Professional who values the promises she gives strictly (like Akira), she basically says to him, that she loves him, but won’t break her word for him (Akira didn't know the reason why he needed to die to complete her contract).
    • Sheryl's worrying about Akira being so willing to abandon her. Akira himself, grew up being sold false promises before being taken advantage of until he was no longer useful, at which point he's discarded, this happening repeatedly. This sounds exactly like what Sheryl constantly fears Akira will do to her... If you combine the mini-panic attacks Akira has over potentially being used like that with the revelation that old world connectors project their feelings into those around them unconsciously, you get the picture of how Sheryl's anxieties are so strong because they're Akira's own anxieties combining with her natural ones, just like Nergo said that a slum old world connector's feelings of suspicion would be shared and combine with those of the people around him.
    • It's pointed out that Carol is a Sex Goddess for being able to satisfy a cyborg with their Sense Loss Sadness, and of course there is her strange ability to get men addicted to her enough they'll pay anything to sleep with her. There is actually a perfectly logical explanation for this, although this connection is not explicitly confirmed. As mentioned above, old world connectors share their feelings with those around them. So theoretically, Carol being one, is unconsciously broadcasting her own feelings, both of her self-image as a Proud Beauty, and her sexual pleasure, into her clients.
  • Fridge Horror: The multiple cases of The Reveal leading up to Inabe's assault on the inner ruins lead to this when applied as a Rewatch Bonus. Considering Akira shares the same potential for unknowingly brainwashing others as Katsuya, since it's Power Incontinence from being an Old World Connector. Web Novel chapter 24 turns from something that could be considered cute, to a horrific unknowing brainwashing session of Sheryl egged on by Alpha. The reactions of Shijima, Katsuragi, and Dennis to Sheryl's change, but especially chapter 111, reinforce that this was the case. The real horror comes in, when you consider, that might only be the most obvious of several cases...
  • Love to Hate: Chloe serving as both an over the top Drama Queen, and The Chew Toy as a villain, can easily make one anticipate her scenes to see just how far her exaggerated feelings can go.
  • Take That, Scrappy!: All the verbal broadsides aimed at Viola later in the web novels, and her support role largely being taken over by Shirou, makes it seem like a case of this.
  • Vanilla Protagonist: Akira has been criticized as being fairly bland and lacking overarching goals aside from staying safe, making money, and becoming a better hunter to eventually live up to his end of the contract he has with Alpha. His meek quietness outside of his cold-blooded moments in combat means that his interactions with others are often seen as bland while making his nature as a Pinball Protagonist and Unwitting Pawn for Alpha even more blatant. The manga adaptation seems to acknowledge and address this by making Akira more assertive, snarky, and headstrong.
