Neil Young and Canadian artists

* GermansLoveDavidHasselhoff: When Music/NeilYoung released a satirical song, "This Note's For You," in 1988, MTV bowed to Music/MichaelJackson's lawyers pressure not to air the music video it since it made fun of him. However, [=MuchMusic=] didn't hesitate to run it (Young's a big native Canadian star and the channel had Canadian Content, or "[=CanCon=]", broadcast rules to follow). The video proved a big hit on Much and MTV decided they could not pass up on it. As such, the video became a big hit that revived Young's career and it won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Video of the Year for 1989 and was nominated for a Grammy for "Best Concept Video"

** Even Canadian musicians (such as Dave Bidini of the Rheostatics and various members of Music/BillyTalent and Music/Alexisonfire) have voiced their complaints about the lack of music videos on the channel in the past, saying that it does a disservice to Canadian musicians and young music fans who would normally watch videos.

* TheyChangedItNowItSucks: There were quite a few viewers who weren't happy about Much removing all the teen dramas from their schedule, outside of ''Series/{{Degrassi}}'' simulcasts (with Creator/{{MTV}} Canada, where the show and reruns were moved to). You can also imagine a number of longtime viewers of Creator/TheComedyNetwork were less than thrilled that most of their acquired shows, like ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'' and ''Series/Tosh0'', were moving to a network that wasn't supposed to be airing (unrelated) comedies in the first place.

* SugarWiki/AwesomeMusic: Being a music network, it makes sense that they'd have songs of their own:
** First came "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VChuhzFey18 99 to 299]]", [[http://www.retrontario.com/2015/05/20/that-time-when-master-t-gave-muchmusic-its-groove-2/ a rap song created by then cameraman]] Tony "Master T" Young in 1987 to mark the move from Citytv and Much's original facility on 99 Queen East to their new headquarters at 299 Queen West. It's actually the very first Canadian rap video in the network's archives.
** A year later, the success of "99 to 299" led Master T to gather a motley crew and create a new video, one designed to celebrate the network's freedom-minded ethos. The result was "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Hft9QGSxJs The Muchmusic Groove]]", featuring the entirety of Much's on-air staff and fearless leader Moses Znaimer. It too was a hit and was frequently seen on Much (before the master tape mysteriously vanished).
** Finally, 1996 saw a revamp of the network's Saturday night dance music show ''Electric Circus'', and this meant a four-minute long dancing extravaganza. "[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qdn9l36de3U Hang on, here we go!]]"

* NetworkDecay: Arguably worse than what happened to Creator/{{MTV}}, Much still plays music videos at the very least. The main issue is that while MTV has successfully moved away from airing music programming by producing a number of successful reality and scripted shows, Much has become overreliant on imported programming with almost no original programming to call its own. The [=MMVAs=] has become the network's only major draw, but now it airs in simulcast on the larger Creator/{{CTV}} network.
** To elaborate, the channel suffered from a large amount of degradation over the past decade, though not to the extent of MTV as Much's broadcast license requires it to air music videos. [=MuchMusic=] was essentially a free-for-all in the 1980s and 1990s, with few (if any) songs being censored and a wide variety of programming catering to virtually every taste (including programs devoted to rap and French music), as well as lots of indie bands getting a chance to shine through music video rotation. Between 2003 and 2006, most of the long-running [=VJs=] jumped ship and left for greener pastures, the station canned many of its unique and interesting shows[[note]]the ''[=MuchAXS=]'' music competition show, all the shows created by ''Ed The Sock'' creator Steve Kerzner, ''[=MuchTopTens=]'', ''Electric Circus'', ''Intimate and Interactive'', and many more — all of which played a sizable amount of music videos or songs[[/note]], and then shifted their focus onto reality shows (like the ''Much VJ Search'' and American imports). Many people (including [[http://www.spinner.ca/2009/08/31/muchmusic-in-no-rush-to-celebrate-its-25th-anniversary/ many]] [[http://torontoist.com/2008/03/much_more_medio.php Canadian]] [[http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/television/article/687558 media]] [[http://jam.canoe.ca/Television/2009/08/24/10589566-cp.html outlets]]) lamented the fact that the station did '''absolutely nothing''' to celebrate its 25th anniversary. It was up to the fans to broadcast their own tributes for a station that had almost no trace of the elements that made it so popular and unique in the first place. Said media outlets also noted that ''[=MTV=] Canada'' is considered to be '''more relevant''' to young teenagers!
*** In September 2013, a number of "low-brow" shows airing on Creator/TheComedyNetwork (including ''Series/DrunkHistory'', ''WesternAnimation/SouthPark'', ''WesternAnimation/TheSimpsons'', and ''Series/{{Conan}}'') moved to Much. At the same time, Much scaled back more of its music programming, adopted the ambiguous slogan of " It's a lot" in its advertising, and dropped '''music''' from its name. What makes the latter even more apparent? In 2014, the name of the [=MuchMusic=] Video Awards was subtlety amended to the "Much Music Video Awards", with a space. Similar shifts occurred with sister network [=MuchMore=] when it was re-branded as M3.
*** In July 2014, the bottom fell out. The Much division took the brunt of Bell Media's cuts in that month, with 91 people losing their jobs and most of the network's original programming, including ''Video on Trial'' ending abruptly because of them. Beyond filling the schedule with reruns of their weekly countdown show and automated playlists of music videos (which barely require any staff to set up) to keep the CRTC satisfied, it didn't look good. At the very least, Much actually did something for their 30th anniversary: airing a "top 100 music videos of all time" countdown, and an half-hour 30th anniversary special.
*** These moves came, strangely enough, right after the CRTC denied license amendments that would have allowed The Comedy Network to air less Canadian content and more animated programming (Creator/{{Teletoon}} complained; Comedy is only allowed to devote 10% of its broadcast day to animation). Two years later, the music video spinoff channels were sold to Stingray (an operator of Canada's digital cable radio platform).
*** It only got worse in Fall 2017, when the CRTC's new broadcast rules took effect. The CRTC phased out genre protection, the one thing preventing Much from entering TotalAbandonment, and removed the obligation to fund music videos from Much's license. This has lead to the axing of the [=MuchFACT=] program, with Much now only playing music videos in the mornings. The afternoon schedule has been completely taken over by comedy repeats, while the channel has also added ''TMZ'' and more [[DarkerAndEdgier serious]] fare like ''Vice News Tonight'' and a Friday night block of music documentaries called "Icons".
** A similar fate happened to Fuse, Much's former American spin-off, since its merger with [=NuvoTV=]. Now marketed as a multicultural network, Fuse, at the very least, continues to produce original programs. However, the network's entire schedule is almost nothing but sitcom reruns and movies, and the network only has a handful of the latter. Fuse has essentially become a Latino-oriented [=MTV2=], while their fledgling spin-off network, FM, is basically what Fuse was like before the merger.

At the very least, unlike their 25th anniversary, Much actually did something for their 30th anniversary: airing a "top 100 music videos of all time" countdown, and an half-hour 30th anniversary special.
**** These moves came, strangely enough, right after the CRTC denied license amendments that would have allowed The Comedy Network to air less Canadian content and more animated programming (Creator/{{Teletoon}} complained; Comedy is only allowed to devote 10% of its broadcast day to animation). Two years later, the music video spinoff channels were sold to Stingray (an operator of Canada's digital cable radio platform).

* NetworkDecay: Almost worse than what happened to Creator/{{MTV}}, at the very least, Much still plays music videos. However, while MTV has successfully moved away from airing music programming, Much has become overreliant on imported programming with no original shows to call its own. At this point, the [=MMVAs=] has become the network's only major draw.

FM is basically what Fuse was like before the merger.
