* DesignatedHero: In the canon episode "[[Recap/TeenageMutantNinjaTurtles2012S2E20TheLegendOfTheKuroKabuto The Legend of the Kuro Kabuto]]", Shredder tries to explain his reasoning in raising Karai as his daughter as a moral one, thinking it would have been wrong to let her be raised by "scum" like Yoshi and it is portrayed as him [[BelievingTheirOwnLies Believing His Own Lies]]. Here, Splinter does the same thing with Shredder's son Sousuke for the same reason and it is portrayed in a positive light. While the circumstances are not necessarily the same, it does shave an inch or two off of Splinter's moral high-ground a little.

* JerkassWoobie: While still a monster, Shredder isn't quit the CompleteMonster he was in canon, considering his FreudianExcuse this time is because he thinks Yoshi killed his son. He even leaves Tang Shen and her children out of his mindless rampage and considers adopting them as his family after he is finished with Hamato Yoshi. This doesn't stop him from beating down the Hamato Children, assuming they are just his students and not their children (and his long-lost son).
