* DemonicSpiders: Kantus priests in the sequel can revive downed Locust troops from halfway across the battlefield, summoning Tickers out of nowhere, armed with a burst-fire Gorgon pistol that does ludicrous amounts of damage, Ink Grenades and can perform dodge rolls the moment you get a bead on them. Try to get in range to use that chainsaw bayonet and they'll knock you down with a sonic, screeching attack.
** The new and improved Reavers from Gears of War 2 onwards tend to spring into action at the most inconvenient times.
** Theron Guards filled this role in the first game: much more intelligent than the normal Drone and with armed an explosive-firing Torque Bow.** Myrrah's Praetorian Guard Royal Guards in Gears of War 3 are essentially Theron Guards on steroids. Digger Boomers are even worse, as their Digger Launchers can bypass cover.
** Lambent Drudges combine toughness with numbers (every Lambent encounter seems to have at least one, if not several) and the ability to mutate into newer, nastier forms if they take too much damage in the wrong regions of their body.

* DemonicSpiders: There's absolutely no shortage of dangerous foes to face in the games that will rub you the wrong way, in several more ways than one.
** Really any enemy armed with a Lancer or the Retro Lancer is this, due to not only possessing a potent assault rifle to pin you down for their allies or straight up gun you down if you're caught out of cover, they can use the two rifles eponymous bayonets to instantly kill you at a moment's notice, especially in the case of the Lancer if you don't have your own or a Claw in 5 to engage in a duel with. This is especially poignant in Horde mode where being instantly killed by a chainsaw/bayonet charge not only bypasses going down and possibly being revived, a player's death can easily snowball into a round ending with the entire squad wiping as they're overwhelmed by the sudden loss of a teammate.
** Theron Guards are the EliteMook. Often armed with their signature Torque Bow and/or Lancers and Gnashers, they can easily blast you away at range with their Torque Bows, which is instant death on Hardcore/Insane, whereas Lancer/Gnasher armed Therons will make you regret trying to close the distance. Myrrah's Praetorian Guard Royal Guards in 2 and 3 are essentially Therons on steroids.

times. Likewise, some Reavers have Therons with Torque Bows riding them too.
** Theron Guards filled this role If you thought regular Boomers were bad Savage Boomers in the first game: much more intelligent 3 have a new toy that's even deadlier than the normal Drone and with armed an explosive-firing Torque Bow.** Myrrah's Praetorian Guard Royal Guards in Gears of War 3 are essentially Theron Guards on steroids. Boomshot, the Digger Launcher, a nasty explosive-rigged burrowing creature weaponized to violently dig under cover and erupt in your face like a bouncing betty. Oh and don't even get near them, the Savage Boomers are even worse, as can shoot their Digger Launchers can bypass cover.
Diggers inside you, killing you instantly.
** Lambent Drudges combine toughness with numbers (every Lambent encounter seems to have at least one, if not several) and the ability to mutate into newer, nastier forms if they take too much damage in the wrong regions of their body. They'll either sprout tentacle arms that gives them a dual imulsion ball attack and the ability to grab and instantly kill anyone who gets too close to them, a headsnake that breathes deadly imulsion fire and will fall off if the body is killed and continue to pursue players, or they'll mutate into a gigantic stalk that allows them to shoot over cover and generate polyps, or any combination of all 3 different mutations to keep you hurting.

** The UsefulNotes/XboxSeriesXAndS backwards compatibility (and One X to a more limited degree) can use FPS Boost to change these games from their rough 30fps frame rates, to smooth 60fps without much issue. 2 benefits from a native 4K output, while 3 and 4 have a choice of 4K 30fps or 1440p 60fps, the latter of which is still sharp enough to not be a major impact to image quality. It's to the point that Gears 5s update for the Xbox Series machines was so optimized that the Series X can play it in native 4K 60fps rock solid, making it look like a launch title of the next generation.

** Since it happens at the end of a mission, the tragic cutscene in Gears 2 where ends with a hilariously inappropriate moment of MoodWhiplash if you're playing co-op, in which case a pop-up appears informing you of your progress towards the 'Friends with Benefits' achievement.

* IKnewIt: Before Gears of War 4 was released, many fans jokingly speculated that Baird was the one who created the [=DeeBees=] that the reformed COG uses since they shared the same initials as him. The campaign proved the fans right by revealing that over the 25 year TimeSkip, Baird became a FamedInStory world-renowned industrialist who, being the resident GadgeteerGenius of the COG, is indeed the creator of the [=DeeBees=].

* OnceOriginalNowCommon:
** There were third person shooters beforehand like VideoGame/EverythingOrNothing that had a primitive cover based system, but the first Gears of War was the game that help perfect the cover based system we see in modern third and even some first person shooters. Back in 2006, this was a big deal and a massive step forward for third-person shooter design: but for players who get around to playing this years after the fact, they will be baffled at why the first game is considered "revolutionary".
** The original game's "Mad World" trailer was widely praised upon release as one of the greatest marketing stunts for a video game ever, something that's a little hard to understand today. At the time, a trailer for a video game that emphasised EmotionalTorque and was presented in a traditionally "artistic" way was something new and interesting, keeping in mind that most trailers until then were mostly just gameplay and cutscene showcases. Today, now that video games are more widely accepted as an art form and trailers have gone much further in their ability to invent an emotional hook for viewers, the appeal of "Mad World" is a bit lost.
