** Daenerys finally confronts Varys about his questionable loyalties and his role in the attempt on her life, a scene fans have wanted to see since he first joined her in Season 5 and a clear result of the producers trying to sort out the mess they made of Varys's motivations by having Aegon VI AdaptedOut. On the other hand, since Varys actually totally deflects the direct question of why he supported Viserys in Season 1 by effectively saying he just didn't know how great Dany would be yet (which doesn't address Viserys's flaws at all) and actually defends his ChronicBackstabbingDisorder with the argument that "incompetence shouldn't be rewarded with blind loyalty" (which is also incongruent with [[StartXToStopX supporting Viserys over Robert]]), so it's hard to say the plot hole has actually been closed yet.
** Tyrion calling out Ellaria for Myrcella's murder is one of the most anticipated scenes this season, and it's delivered in the second episode.

foreshadowing is not ymmv, is a trope

* {{Foreshadowing}}: This episode marks the beginning of Daenerys' EntitledBitch attitude, despite not a scene earlier, her remarking on knowing that the people of Westeros won't simply bow down to her rule, she still expects a Northern King to come to Dragonstone and "Bend the Knee" despite not having actually accomplished anything in Westeros worthy of being followed.

Misuse, refers to things that happen after the episode

* HilariousInHindsight:
** The similarity between Archmaester Ebrose and [[Film/HarryPotterAndTheHalfBloodPrince Horace Slughorn]], both roles played by Jim Broadbent, continue: Ebrose knows about the treatment for greyscale but says it's forbidden because it's dangerous and doesn't want to talk about it to Sam; Slughorn knows about the creation of horcruxes but says it's forbidden because it's dark magic and doesn't want to talk about it to Harry.
** It's probably coincidence, but if so it's an awesome one and if not it's a nice StealthPun that Euron's axe bears such a close resemblance to the Zombietools model [[https://www.zombietools.net/shop/the-kraken/ the Kraken]], only more pimped out.

Only individual characters are The Scrappy

* AlasPoorScrappy: Seeing two of the Sand Snakes taken out so easily - with their own weapons - is still quite sad. Especially Nymeria's BigNo when she sees that Obara has been killed.

* FridgeBrilliance: Why is Jon willing to have faith in Dany's good will when no one else is? Everyone else in the room's most recent experience with her family is The Mad king and Rhegar, a man they believe abducted Lyanna. But for Jon it's Maester Aemon, a kind man who was a mentor and supporter to him and Sam, so beyond previously being willing to look past SinsOfOurFathers, he knows her family can have good people as well as bad.

* RootingForTheEmpire: Euron is [[AxCrazy a complete psycho who kills his own kin]] and is firmly in villain territory. But with that said, it's not hard to root for him when he goes up against [[TheScrappy the Sand Snakes]] (also psychos who killed their own kin). Especially since he proves he's a competent and capable commander and warrior rather than the beneficiary of DiabolusExMachina, whose attack makes military sense and whose victory against the Sand Snakes involves getting injured in the process, showing he's merely a very competent antagonist instead of an InvincibleVillain. His over the top DynamicEntry doesn't hurt either.
* TakeThatScrappy: Obara and Nymeria Sand's deaths were written as if it was a way to mock [[FightSceneFailure their infamous fighting scene in Season 5]], showcasing how they [[FauxActionGirl really aren't all that good at combat at all]]. Lampshaded as moments before the fight starts one talks about killing the Mountain and disparages her own father for failing, despite his being a much better fighter.

Ramsay is actually a capabable commander. He successfully led the Calgary against Stannis's army and if the Knights of the Vale hadn't arrived he would have won the battle of the bastards because he lured Jon into a trap with Rickon.

** Theon's abandonment of Yara immediately split fans into two camps. On the one side are fans who're really disappointed by what they feel is a serious regression of his recovery from his time as Reek. On the other, you have those who feel it was a [[RealityEnsues natural reaction]] he should've had since previous seasons planted enough seeds that he was still suffering from PTSD. Seeing how Theon was also facing dozens of Ironborn, his escape could also be seen as CombatPragmatism since had he stayed, there was realistically no way in hell he could have fought them all, or prevented Euron from slitting her throat if it looked like Theon was successfully fighting through his men.
** As often happens in a case of TakeThatScrappy, fan reaction to killing off two Sand Snakes is divided: similar to when the show openly mocked the Sand Snakes in the Season 6 finale, some rejoice at killing off these failed characters, while others point out that it was the showrunners who ruined the Sand Snakes ''in the first place'', so they shouldn't be complimented for this admission of failure.

Misuse, not ymmv, complaining...

* RealityEnsues: The realism of the sea battle is questionable. How did Euron even find Yara's fleet at night? Ramming with a sailing ship with snap the rammer's masts (ancient ships removed their masts before battle). Fire weapons were only effective in harbor battles. And why would you board a ship that is on fire?
