* CrowningMomentOfAwesome: Martin realises that has a malformation in her brain that no other doctor has spotted. He rushes to the airport and stops her flying to Spain (which would have caused the malformation to bleed) and when she is about to undergo surgery, the very young surgeon is both nervous and star-struck by Martin. Not trusting him to perform the operation, Martin locks him in a cupboard and performs the operation himself. He does it with the utmost professionalism despite the patient being and it's a complete success. When his fear of blood inevitably flares up during the surgery, he takes a few seconds to vomit into a bin, goes back to the operating table, and carries on after first ordering someone to change the bin.

** Elaine wasn't very well-liked, mainly because she's unbelievably Jerkass rude and stupid, and absolutely refuses to take her job seriously. It also doesn't help that everyone in town seems to love her for some reason, turning against Martin for firing her even though he had every reason to do so. (Funnily enough, the only person who seemed to understand Martin's point of view is Elaine's father.) When she left the show after the end of season one, practically no one complained.

* RecycledTheSeries: Kind of an odd example. A character, played by Clunes appeared in a film Saving Grace and later two prequel miniseries. In making this series, the character was given a ReTool with DoctorJerk added to the character (who was originally just a FishOutOfWater), and his last name was changed to Ellingham (an anagram of the last name of the show's writer Dominic Minghella).

* FridgeLogic: Martin has a somewhat old fashioned view on the surface; he thinks that Louisa should stay at home to raise their child, rather than get back into work. It makes sense, however. Given how his own parents showed no interest in raising him, after all.
** That said, he also looks into boarding schools, although in his case, it seems to be more about getting his child the best possible education than avoiding raising his son.
** Martin seems to become grumpier as the series go on. In the first series, he's a tiny bit friendlier in some respects, at least until someone manages to earn his ire or prove they're idiots. It might seem like Flanderization, but then you wonder about if Martin is ultimately frustrated by the idiocy of the villagers, the utter differences between his emotionally reticent self and said villagers, their ability to get any kind of disease, no matter how implausible or improbable, sometimes due to the fact that they seem unwilling to take his advice seriously, and possibly his and Louisa's inability to keep their relationships going due to him being emotionally reticent and perhaps her inability to stand it..
