* Wangst: Both Leanne and Yasmeen are going through this. Instead of trying to do anything practical to get past their traumatic events, they wallow in it and get angry/defensive whenever anyone tries to offer help or advice. Not helping is how both of their attitudes are extending two already protracted and tiresome storyines.

** Leanne Battersby during and after the loss of Oliver. At first her immense grief and denial was completely understandable, but she soon began to lash out at anyone who dared even suggest that his life-support be turned off, in spite of how hopeless the situation is to the point that the poor boy had multiple organ failure. Then at the memorial service, she lashes out at Sam, a ten-year-old boy, just because he wanted to lend condolences and referred to him as his brother, and continues to both shun him and put Nick in a position of forcing him to choose between the two of them.

* FairForItsDay: The gay storyline involving Todd. Yes, it involved a previously established straight character suddenly coming out and carrying on an affair behind his girlfriend's back. However, it still portrayed Todd sympathetically, any hostility towards him was about the fact that it was an affair (rather than it being with another man) and it eventually resulted in the entire pub standing up for Todd against Les Battersby's homophobia. This was in 2003 and was one of the first times a gay storyline had ever been done in British soaps. There was a mountain of controversy over having gay characters at all. Todd remained a series regular for at least a year, during which another gay character was introduced (and they weren't paired together). Todd was most definitely a trailblazer for the very popular Sophie and Sian pairing that followed.

** Nick Tilsley and his relationship with Sam Blakeman, who he just discovered to be his son. Nick's girlfriend, Leann Battersby, has just lost her infant son and is clearly having a tough time grieving. Sam turns up during the funeral to read a poem to "his brother" on the day and Leanne is clearly not comfortable with how things are turning out. You would expect Nick to simply explain to Sam that they can spend time together on another day because Leanne is dealing with something that Sam is too young to understand and Leanne's not in the best mindset to deal with all of this at once. Instead, Nick lets Sam stay and when Leanne catches Sam playing with one of Oliver's toys, she breaks down and gets infuriated with him for trying to replace Oliver. Sam didn't do it on purpose, it was just the straw that broke the camel's back.

* GrowingTheBeard: If you found the largely episodic, slice-of-life comedy of the 60's, 70's, and 80's to be boring and repetitive, the year 1988 was this, where Coronation Street started introducing longer-running, dramatic story arcs, and it also saw the beginnings of the show's first major villain, Alan Bradley. From there, while still keeping the show's comedy, Coronation Street began having major story arcs and developed a more SoapWheel format that took shape during the 1990's and continued up to the present day.

** Tim's mother, Elaine, comes back after abandoning him out of fear of Geoff, Yasmeen tries to talk to her about helping in the trial and talking to Tim. Elaine refuses at first but decides to talk to Tim herself so Yasmeen wouldn't twist her words. Elaine just walks up to him at work, dramatically builds up to the reveal that she's Geoff's first wife, how she changed her identity and how she's Tim's mum... and Tim doesn't believe her and kicks her out because he doesn't remember her and because Geoff told him his mum was dead. Elaine should have just explained everything without the theatrics and, more importantly, provided evidence; like a baby photo or a [=DNA=] test, because anyone can walk up to the door and claim to be a parent. Sally and Alya are also of the opinion that Tim should automatically believe her to be his mum, despite the police outright telling them how stupid Tim would have to be to immediately accept a complete stranger to be his long-dead mum.

** Ivy Tilsley (later Brennan) suffered badly from this. In her earliest appearances (when she only made the occasional appearance as one of the factory girls) her surname was Tyldesley and she said she had a husband called Arthur. As time passed Arthur was briefly renamed Wilf, and then renamed again and became Jack, who actually made two appearances on the show with it being stated the pair were childless despite trying. Several years after her introduction, the producers made the decision to move Ivy onto the street and completely rewrote her backstory. Jack was retconned out of existence and replaced with Bert, and Ivy gained a 20-year old son in the form of Brian.
