* AcceptableTargets: The series riffs into some of the things that real life embassies have to deal with. For example, having to make commercial deals (arms contracts, oil drilling licences) with corrupt pseudodemocratic dictators, whilst having to confront them on their human rights records. Said human rights activist is a smug, HolierThanThou JerkAss, who thinks that ''the Embassy'' is corrupt and prioritising commercial deals with a regime that is corrupt and oppressive, rather than aggressively defending human rights. Minor royalty are also targeted, with [[PrinceCharmless Prince Mark]] being portrayed as an "ignorant feckless twit" who is completely unaware of what country he's in (e.g. failing to understand his favourite hotel chain does not have a branch in Tazbekistan, or that the country, being landlocked, has no beaches) and generally acts like a spoiled, demanding party boy. No reason for portraying the French as pricks, though.

* TheWoobie: Natalia means well but the British staff are often visibly unhappy/disappointed with her work promoting Britain to the locals. Becomes especially pronounced when she silently takes it when Neil bluntly criticizes her planning for the Best of British Festival ([[JerkassHasAPoint which to be fair did go terribly]]).

* TheyWastedAPerfectlyGoodPlot: Inverted. Some critics have complained that stories that should be put in more episodes feel overly compressed to fit in a single issue (such as Guantanamo Bob's visit taking focus over the Tazbek riots)
