* ''Series/TheBrittasEmpire'':
** The role of Gordon Brittas was originally offered to Creator/PeterDavison. However, he turned it down in favor of the short-lived sitcom ''Series/FiddlersThree''.
** This sitcom was originally going to be set at a Community Centre before the creators found out that the concept had already been done in another series.
** According to [[https://www.thegayuk.com/interviews-the-brittas-empire-cast-writer-interviews/ this interview]], Creator/PippaHaywood (who plays Helen Brittas in the final product) was actually called up for a different role (which remains unnamed in the interview). However, she liked Helen's role so much that she asked to read for her as well, and she ended up getting that part instead.
** Another early idea for the series according to [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEX8_806UeY this documentary]] would have had Brittas as a vicar. As such, Horatio Brittas (Brittas' similarly bumbling vicar twin brother) may have been [[DevelopmentGag a reference to this idea]].

** Creator/LauraJackson auditioned for the series but was turned down by Croft as her French accent was too good and not the comic French he was hoping for. Jackson later worked for Croft in the later series of ''Series/HiDeHi''.

** Creator/JulieChristianYoung had been up for parts in the series but turned them down as she preferred drama.

* ''WhatCouldHaveBeen/HiDeHi''

* ''Series/HiDeHi'':
** Jimmy Perry and David Croft wanted to film on location at Butlins Holiday Camp in Clacton. They sent the script to them, only to be threatened with legal action in response; Butlins were working on modernising and refused to be associated with the old style of holiday camp from The50s.
** John Quayle was the first choice for Jeffrey Fairbrother, but he was busy with the National Theatre. Creator/SimonCadell was cast instead and later went on to become Croft's son-in-law.
** Croft favoured Ronnie Hilton for Ted Bovis, but he wasn't experienced enough to play the role. Perry chose Creator/PaulShane after he had seen him in an episode of ''Series/CoronationStreet''.
** Peggy wasn't in the {{Pilot}} at first. It was only when Richard Stone introduced Croft and Perry to Creator/SuPollard that they created the character, as they liked Pollard too much to not have her in the series.
** Apparently if Joe Maplin had ever shown up on screen, they wanted Creator/BobMonkhouse to play him.
** Terence Creasey was hoped to return for Series 2, but he chose to return to Australia to care for his ailing father, leading to Gary being recast with Creator/ChrisAndrews.
** When Cadell told Creator/RuthMadoc about his intentions to leave the series after four years, he offered that she could leave at the same time as him, so Jeffrey and Gladys could end the series as a couple.
** The role of "The Hulk" (Peggy's boyfriend from "The Society Entertainer") was supposed to be much smaller, but Croft was so fond of Creator/ArthurBostrom that he was given a few more laughs in the script.
** Creator/RikkiHoward and Susan Beagley were due to return for Series 6 but couldn't as the former was pregnant and the latter was busy in the West End, so Creator/LindaRegan, Creator/LauraJackson, and Creator/JulieChristianYoung joined the cast to play a trio of new Yellowcoats. Lucy Aley-Parker (who later guest starred as two different characters) had also auditioned to be one of the new Yellowcoats.
** Mr. Partridge was supposed to appear in every episode of Series 6, however early in filming Creator/LeslieDwyer had to pull out due to ill health. As a result, many scenes throughout the series had to be rewritten, either to have Mr. Partridge mentioned to be offscreen (such as when Fred mentions he is back in the chalet near the end of "Together Again"), suspiciously absent (such as when Clive is introduced to the staff in "Ted at the Helm"), or in the most obvious last-minute rewrites, had his lines given to a plumber played by Creator/RonnieBrody (who even uses his "Listen to that silly cow!" CharacterCatchphrase).
** Creator/BarryHoward (who had been dropped from the series in 1986) was given [[TheBusCameBack a chance to return]] [[BackForTheFinale for the finale]], "The Wind of Change", but he turned down the offer.
** There were brief talks of a Spin-Off about Ted and Peggy working in a theatre. It is possible that this inspired the scene in the ''Series/YouRangMLord'' pilot, where Stokes and Ivy (also played by Shane and Pollard) do an act in the music halls.
