* Creator/ColinBaker wanted his Doctor to dress in black velvet, but it got nixed as being too similar to the Master's outfit and too difficult to see in underlit settings. Ironically, the rainbow outfit that Creator/JohnNathanTurner ultimately chose still caused lighting problems, as its bright colors meant that the sets had to be lit just as brightly to make the clothes come out right on-camera. Nathan-Turner went on record stating that had the crew informed him about this ahead of time, he never would've gone with the design.

The black velvet costume would get revisited for the Ninth Doctor.

** The iconic intro was originally going to include a portrait face of the First Doctor, but was ultimately scrapped due to BBC finding the idea too scary for younger viewers in test viewings. The idea would get [[RefittedForSequel repurposed]] starting with the Second Doctor and would be a mainstay of the Classic Era, up until the Seventh Doctor.

* Another early idea was that he'd escaped from his "home galaxy" in 5733, and didn't know who he was, but had flashes of memory suggesting he was a refugee from a terrible war that wiped out his people. The production team later, in an early version of [[Recap/DoctorWhoS4E3ThePowerOfTheDaleks "The Power of the Daleks"]], considered the idea of revealing the Daleks had destroyed his people. The first part of this is fairly similar to what happened in the revival series, coincidentally.

*** Eventually though a "masterplan" document ''was'' written by Cartmel, Marc "Ghost Light" Platt, and Ben "Remembrance/Battlefield" Aaronovitch after production on ''Doctor Who'' had ended, for the [[Literature/DoctorWhoNewAdventures New Adventures]] lines of novels in the 1990s, which hugely expanded on and codified the vague "masterplan" concepts Cartmel had been kicking around while script editor of ''Doctor Who'' a few year prior. Parts of the document can be read [[https://doctornolonger.tumblr.com/post/690399381780856832/the-cartmel-masterplan here]]. Apparently only some authors for the New and Missing Adventures novels had access to the full document, hence some novels still featuring contradictory information.

*** The novelisation, also by Ian Briggs, includes a LOT of backstory for virtually every character, and it heavily implies that both Dr Judson and Commander Millington were gay and involved at some point. It also outright states that Millington was responsible for the accident that crippled Judson several years earlier, and Judson had been exploiting Millington's guilt over it ever since to help obtain funding and clearance for his work.

*** This concept also involved the native Gallifreyans being humanoid cat creatures, visually distinct from the very human-like Time Lords. This idea was scrapped on the grounds of cost before the story was rewritten to remove the idea of Time Lords not being native to Gallifrey entirely, but humanoid cat creatures did eventually appear in ''Doctor Who'' – as the "Cheetah People" in Recap/DoctorWhoS26E4Survival, the classic series' final story, and as the "Catkind" in the new series episodes Recap/DoctorWhoS28E1NewEarth and Recap/DoctorWhoS29E3Gridlock – though these weren't related to Gallifrey or the Time Lords.

* "Lungbarrow" very nearly made it to air, but was nixed by the producer in favour of [[Recap/DoctorWhoS26E2GhostLight "Ghost Light"]], ending up as a ''New Adventures'' title instead. Focusing on the Doctor reunited with his estranged family, the story was less about Sylvester [=McCoy=] and more a re-imagining of Gallifrey in keeping with his darker Doctor; less CrystalSpiresAndTogas, and more "''Series/TheAddamsFamily'' [[ThisIsYourPremiseOnDrugs on acid]]".
