Seriously, both of these comments from the novelization not only not justify the stupidities, they make them worse.

The result: It opens and the rest is obvious, as pictured above. The novelization somewhat fixes this by having David smear a narcotic ointment on Oram's nostrils before bringing him into the cavern with the eggs, essentially drugging Oram and impairing his sense of judgement, but it opens another point by having Oram trusting him enough to allow him to apply the damn thing.

That's NOT being fair at all. Even on this regular earth, changing the course of sail into two weeks of uncharted waters would be highly risky at best, and it would be magnitudes more in space. For all we know, the fuel and other supply is remaining just enough for 7 year flight.

The result: It kicks off the entire plot and condemns the lives of at least 2,000 people, if not entire civilizations. In fairness to this one, their ship had been damaged and they weren't sure they were going to make it to their destination without more casualties; also, Oram was not alone in wanting to follow the signal or colonize the planet -- only Daniels truly objects. The crew wasn't on board with going back into stasis for the remanding seven years to get to their target planet. Also, it's implied Oram is more interested in "taking a look" to see if it's really as good as promised, and if something goes wrong they'll ditch and head to their original destination.

Even Worse: Sergeant Hallett goes around touching plants and breathing alien spores. Unsurprisingly, he dies via Neomorph embryo through the mouth minutes later. Keep in mind that the people who venture onto the surface aren't exactly rocket scientists, only colonists who probably have some social tact of not wearing spacesuits on the planet. Besides, wearing those spacesuits would lead to both causing the seriousness of the movie to expire because of how ridiculous it is, and lead to deflating the suspense.

You'd expect: That the crew bring protective suits and don't expose themselves to any unknown pathogen by breathing or touching it. \\

The novelization states that Walter tested the atmosphere and water and found it to be perfectly safe, but this is not indicated in the film.\\
