[[WMG: Glad Hand's real name is Hank and he'll eventually become the janitor at [[WesternAnimation/{{Recess}} 3rd Street Elementary School]].]]
After being disillusioned by his miserable failure to ease the tensions between the Jets and the Sharks, he left New York and gave up his career as a social director. His guilt over failing to prevent the deaths of Riff, Bernardo, and Tony made him resolve never to work with teenagers again. He still wanted to help young people in some way, though, which was why he eventually became an elementary school janitor. As for why his older self is quieter and less nerdy and perky than his younger self, well, that's a combination of age and disillusionment. Though he never tells anyone, the 3rd Street kids sometimes remind him of the teens he used to know: for example, [[TheLeader T.J.]] reminds him of Riff, [[NaiveNewcomer Gus]] of Baby John, and [[ActionGirl Spinelli]] of Anybodys.

Even though the novelization gives his real name as "Murray Benowitz," his middle name could be "Henry," leading to the nickname "Hank."
