The first trailer for Madagascar contains a large portion of the scene in which Marty tells the others he wishes to "go to the wild", including the line itself. Lots of busy parents likely saw this and remembered it, while forgetting the actual title of the film it was advertising. So when they later saw "The Wild" in a Walmart bargain bin with a picture of 3D animated animals in New York on the cover, they mistook it for the film in that trailer they saw, just as Disney planned.
