In Through The Moon, we saw Viren inside the large cocoon the caterpillar created. That's definitely the real Viren. Why? His face distortions! After years of using dark magic, he has to keep a daily routine of sacrificing a butterfly to hide his true facial features. Yet, after the resurrection, it's confirmed he had been dead for at least two days, even though his skin looks normal. If it's true that Aaravos has some limited future vision, he must've predicted that Claudia would resurrect Viren, and saw his opportunity to either escape his prison or to more effectively use Claudia for his own ends.
