* DiscOneFinalDungeon: The whole first half of the game leads up to a showdown with Darin in Chapter 19. You kill him, and Ephidel, [[spoiler:who then gets [[TheUnfought unceremoniously sucked into the Dragon's Gate and presumably slaughtered by a dragon]] when the ''real'' BigBad makes his intentions and ability known]]. If you take Sain into the battle, he has some special dialogue at the start about [[GenreBlind how he and the others think this is the final battle]] and how he'll slay Darin ForGreatJustice.

* EarlyGameHell: While not the most pronounced example in the series, Hector Hard Mode stands out for having early enemies that are fairly matched in difficulty and numbers compared to your early party, which lacks most of the best characters in the game (save for Marcus and Oswin). You also do not start with 5000 gold like in Eliwood Mode, leaving a single Red Gem in Chapter 11 (which can be easily missed) as your only source of cash for a while. Once past this point, enemy stats do not scale evenly and the player gets more powerhouse characters, making things overall easier.

* PartySplitting: In Genesis, a suddenly-appearing wall in Kishuna's ruins forces the party into two groups that can't reach each other until much later in the chapter.
