* SheatheYourSword: The Nintendo Switch launch update added an EasterEgg to "Botanic Panic!". If you don't attack Weepy (the onion in the second phase), he'll simply leave the fight; instead, a radish pops out during the third phase to make up the difference.

Added DiffLines:

* SdrawkcabSpeech: [[spoiler: Viewing the bad ending and returning to the title screen will cause the cheery quartet's audio to be played backwards.]]

* PragmaticAdaptation: While the game otherwise sticks to emulating classic cartoons to the T, the developers made a conscious decision to avoid references to the frequent racial caricatures featured in the game

* PragmaticAdaptation: While the game otherwise sticks to emulating classic cartoons to the T, the developers made a conscious decision to avoid references to the frequent racial caricatures featured that often appeared in the gamecartoons the game is based off of.

* CreepyJazzMusic: Considering that the game is styled after old cartoons like the ones that may have been this trope's TropeCodifier, it's only natural for it to use this type of music. The game boasts a soundtrack of 3 hours of original jazz music, so this trope is in full effect. Nearly all of the battles are accompanied by frenetic jazz music, while other segments use more smooth jazz to create a more ominous effect.

** Averted regarding the racist portrayals of minorities that were common in cartoons back then; if such a thing occurred today, it'd be more surprising if there ''wasn't'' extreme backlash from all sides.

* DoesThisRemindYouOfAnything: Beating Wally Warbles and/or Grim Matchstick causes two rainbow bridges to appear, both of which lead to the second mausoleum. Somehow, these rainbow bridges have the thought of a "pet afterlife" come to mind, especially for younger players.

* FissionMailed: Should you let any of the Spectre Syndicate touch The Legendary Chalice's urn in the Mausoleum levels, the stage will immediately end with Cuphead and Mugman looking absolutely terrified. The latest update for the base game adds a snippet of the Barbershop Quartet singing "YOU FAILED!" to rub your failure in.

* HeadSwap: To keep gameplay balanced, Cuphead and Mugman are more or less identical, with only a few subtle differences. Cuphead has round eyes, a small red nose, a long bendy straw with red stripes, and red pants; Mugman has ovular eyes, a big blue nose, a short straw with blue stripes, and blue pants.

* HoldYourHippogriffs: In the good ending, [[spoiler:after defeating the Devil and incinerating the Soul Contracts, Cuphead and Mugman race each other for home, with Mugman shouting out, "Last one there is a [[labelnote:leaky cup]]rotten egg[[/labelnote]]!"]]

* ParryingBullets: Cuphead and Mugman can "parry slap" [[ColorCodedForYourConvenience anything pink]], from bullets to bricks and even each other's hearts, gaining energy, making the player jump higher, and/or doing other unique things (IE, reviving your partner).

* PragmaticAdaptation: While the game otherwise sticks to emulating classic cartoons to the T, the racist depictions of racial minorities is purposely avoided, [[ValuesDissonance and for good reason]]. The most that happens is giving Djimmi the Great clear Egyptian influences (when genies are Arabic), and that is terribly minor in comparison while still being a possible throwback.

* ShapedLikeItself: Cuphead has a cup for a head. Mugman is a man whose [[JustForPun mug is a mug]]. The duo will repeatedly get referred to as "mugs", which is also a DoubleEntendre, since a "mug" in the metaphorical sense is someone who's been foolishly taken advantage of.

* WhatYouAreInTheDark: [[spoiler:When Cuphead and Mugman finally face the Devil in the final level, they are given the choice to hand over the soul contracts they collected from defeating every boss to the Devil and join his side. Now, Cuphead and Mugman owe nothing to these bosses who were probably not very good people, and they would benefit greatly by becoming the Devil's henchmen, but refusing the Devil's offer leads to the brothers instead burning all the contracts and saving all the bosses from having their souls taken away.]]

* JungleJazz: "Floral Fury" is a Latin jazz-themed piece that serves as a Leitmotif for [[ToweringFlower Cagney Carnation]].

* AutoScrollingLevel: All of the airplane boss fights are autoscrolling, as well as some non-airplane bosses, which are Baroness Von Bon Bon's final phase in "Sugarland Shimmy", Grim Matchstick in "Fiery Frolic", Rumor Honeybottoms in "Honeycomb Herald", the Phantom Express in "Railroad Wrath", and Pip and Dot the dominoes in "All Bets Are Off".

** The latter part of "Rugged Ridge" has you being chased by a giant à la the beginning of the Mecha-Dragon fight in VideoGame/MegaMan2.
** One section in "Perilous Piers" has the player riding on an octopus that has an anchor on its head which you need to parry in order to make it to the end.

"[[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4VD4OwUhDw Junkyard Jive]]", the song that plays when fighting Dr. Kahl, may have originally been the main theme song of the game, given that a piano version of it serves as the theme for one of the [[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3jDZfREYppk game's earliest trailers]].
