** Nova was also a highly unexpected addition, compared to the rest of the new additions. Nova had never been a big name Marvel character, with his only major claim to fame being he was Marvel's AlternateCompanyEquivalent to Franchise/GreenLantern as the resident SpacePolice. Not long after, however, he would appear in WesternAnimation/UltimateSpiderMan2012 as a SHIELD agent, perhaps increasing his visibility for some. However, the Nova in that cartoon was not Richard Rider but instead a CanonForeigner named Sam Alexander (though Sam's Nova costume would be made available as Nova's alternate costume as an EarlyBirdCameo). This was likely an attempt to promote a potential appearance in Film/GuardiansOfTheGalaxy, though he was cut from the final film.

* ComicBook/MODOK in VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom3. Also unexpected (and before M.O.D.O.K.'s reveal) were Trish, Amaterasu, Super-Skrull (though his inclusion was meant to reflect ComicBook/SecretInvasion), and ComicBook/X 23. Later, Mike Haggar joined the fray and the manliness levels of the game skyrocketed. Not only that, among the SecretCharacter[=s=] of the game was ComicBook/Taskmaster, a somewhat minor Avengers villain.

They were not "role reprisals". A reprisal is a retaliatory attack.

** Even more so than Nova, Rocket Raccoon was on paper a very surprising inclusion with almost no one having heard of him outside of comics at the time. However, it is quite possible his inclusion was there to promote the upcoming Film/2014 film which would release the following year. The fact he would also appear in the second season of WesternAnimation/TheAvengersEarthsMightiestHeroes (which aired right around the same time) alongside the rest of the Guardians, complete with the same voice actor (most of the Marvel voice actors in the game were RoleReprisal[=s=] from that cartoon), also lends credence to his inclusion in the game being to promote the film.

!!Marvel Vs. Capcom:
* For the VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcom series, we've got Shuma-Gorath and Marrow. Predating all of those (back in VideoGame/XMenChildrenOfTheAtom) was the Sentinel, which surprised some as Sentinels are MechaMooks rather than an individual character. Jin Saotome from VideoGame/Cyberbots had Americans asking, "Who the hell is Jin?" and "Isn't he from VideoGame/Tekken?" Also, few were expecting Strider Hiryu and VideoGame/CaptainCommando to make a reappearance after about a decade in the doldrums (though the former would go on to be a series mainstay).
** With the UpdatedRerelease VideoGame/UltimateMarvelVsCapcom3, we received Firebrand and Nemesis T-Type. Phoenix Wright would also qualify if not for the fact that he was so highly requested (and hello again, Frank!).
** Nova was also a highly unexpected addition, compared to the rest of the new additions. Not long after, however, he would appear in WesternAnimation/UltimateSpiderMan as a SHIELD agent, perhaps increasing his visibility for some. * After his franchise was ignored by Capcom for so long, no-one was expecting the very first character in VideoGame/MarvelVsCapcomInfinite to be Mega Man X. Jedah joining the series as a new character was unexpected as well, not just given how long the series has been dormant, but considering other Darkstalkers characters like Felicia or even Demitri have made more appearances than he has.
!!SNK Vs. Capcom:
* VideoGame/CapcomVsSNK2MarkOfTheMillennium includes Ryuhaku Todoh (as opposed to his more popular daughter Kasumi), Maki (as opposed to more recognizable characters like Guy, Cody, and Haggar), Hibiki Takane (who nobody expected to see get in over someone like Kaede), Kyosuke Kagami (again, over a more recognizable star like Batsu), and Eagle, whose first and only appearance prior was in the original VideoGame/StreetFighterI (the one no-one remembers).
* VideoGame/SNKVsCapcomSVCChaos has a few oddballs such as Mars People, Zero (specifically the VideoGame/MegaManZero version), Red Arremer (years before his Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 appearance), Shiki (who's only appearance up to that point was in the obscure Samurai Shodown 64), Athena (no, not that Athena, the other VideoGame/Athena), Violent Ken (a BrainwashedAndCrazy version of Ken from Anime/StreetFighterIITheAnimatedMovie), and Tessa (the second of only three times a VideoGame/RedEarth character has ever been playable).
!!Other Games:
* VideoGame/StreetFighterXTekken includes Poison (who was never playable in the Street Fighter series before), "Bad Box-Art VideoGame/MegaMan", VideoGame/PacMan in a Mokujin robot, and exclusive to the Sony platforms are Cole MacGrath and Sony Japan mascots Toro and Kuro. And while Akuma as the Street Fighter side boss was hardly surprising, nobody expected Ogre to be the boss for the Tekken side.
* Frank West in VideoGame/TatsunokoVsCapcom: Ultimate All-Stars. Capcom's choices for their own representatives seem to come from the far corners of their character library. For VideoGame/StreetFighterIII they went with Alex (a very slow-paced character in his source series and one whose moves don't spring to mind in a hyperactive fighter like the Vs. Series is known for, though it is worth noting that he was supposed to be the new focal character in his game to complement Ryu) instead of someone more nimble (such as Ibuki or Necro). From VideoGame/Onimusha they pulled Kaijin no Soki, who only appeared in VideoGame/OnimushaDawnOfDreams, as opposed to Samonouske Akechi, the protagonist of both the original and the third game Demon Siege (and ostensibly the "true" protagonist of the series). Saki Omokane, from Quiz Narairo Dreams, might have some presence to Japanese audiences but American players would only know her as that girl who can be chosen as an AssistCharacter in the first Marvel vs. Capcom. And finally they pulled a VideoGame/LostPlanet Vital Suit to represent their "giant" character opposite Gold Lightan, tagged "PTX-40A" and helmed by an unseen pilot. And BigBad is, of all possible people, .
* VideoGame/CapcomFightingEvolution features four VideoGame/RedEarth characters, none of whom are Tessa. She previously appeared in Super Gem Fighter/Pocket Fighter and SVC Chaos: SNK vs. Capcom, herself an example of this trope.
