[[folder:Chase Mercer]]
!!Chase Mercer
The protagonist of the ''VideoGame/TheSecretWorld'' fanfic ''Crux Ferimus''. He led a fairly normal life prior to the start of the series. However, a chance encounter with one of the Bees changed everything. After several days of getting his newfound magical powers under control, he finds himself promptly recruited by the [[Main/KnightsTemplar Templars]]. As a result, he finds himself plunged into the very darkest depths of the Secret World…
----
* {{Action Survivor}}: Though he later grows into a true {{Badass}} over the course of the events of Solomon Island.
* {{Angst What Angst}}: Subverted; he [[Main/StoicWoobie could use a hug]] after all he’s [[Main/BreakTheCutie been through]].

* {{Anti Hero}}: {{Pragmatic Hero}}. He’s generally a good guy, but piss him off and you’ll wish you’d never been born.

* {{Badass}}: Not at first, but he eventually grows into the role.
** {{Badass Longcoat}}: He obtains a magically reinforced one enchanted to repel almost any physical attack from the Stuart twins in anticipation of going to Tokyo.
* {{Beware the Nice Ones}}: He’s a nice guy and all, but he killed the Phoenician masquerading as Ellis Hill in cold blood after discovering that he killed the real one to take his place.

* {{Big Damn Heroes}}: He plays this role from time to time.

* {{Break the Cutie}}: Over the course of the events of Solomon Event, he goes from {{Skilled But Naive}} {{Action Survivor}} to {{Badass}} {{Shell Shocked Veteran}}. This is especially apparent during the Vanishing of Tyler Freeborn, when he learns the {{Awful Truth}} that [[spoiler: due to being infected by an airborne strain of the Filth, almost everyone he's met on Solomon Island will turn into monsters]].

* {{Child Soldiers}}: He's only fifteen when he joins the Templars. [[Main/JustifiedTrope Justified]], as the Templars are short on manpower that can effectively fight against the Filth.
* {{Combat Pragmatist}}: He’s perfectly willing to use a gun or hand-to-hand combat when that would work better than magic.

* {{Deadpan Snarker}}: He has his moments.
* {{Demolitions Expert}}: Having learned to make improvised explosives from Moose in Kingsmouth and work with C4 from Nassir in Egypt, he's the guy you want go to if you want {{Stuff Blowing Up}}.
* {{Determinator}}: It took having to ''decapitate'' him in order to keep him from pursuing Lilith after she captures him in Transylvania.

* {{Disappeared Dad}}: No word on his unseen father.
* {{Elemental Powers}}: He's able to control three out of the five elements: Fire, Water, and Wind.
** {{Playing With Fire}}: Made distinct by the fact that they’re [[Main/TechnicolorFire blue]].

** {{Making a Splash}}: His control over the element of Water allow him to use [[Main/AnIcePerson ice]] as makeshift missiles, darts, and spears.
** {{Blow You Away}}: Though he doesn't use the Wind element all that often in favor of its [[Main/ShockandAwe lightning subelement]]
* {{Emotion Suppression}}: Invoked. He feels the same emotions as everyone else does, but he shuts them away so that he can do what he believes needs to be done. He might feel sorry or haunted afterwards, but in the moment, he simply acts. [[Main/NotSoStoic It's not always successful, however]].
* {{Expy}}: He's basically a younger, less ruthless version of Kiritsugu Emiya after the events of Solomon Island.
* {{Fantastic Recruitment Drive}}: How he ended up working for the Templars.
* {{Good Is Not Soft}}: He's a nice guy once you get know him, but he's also unhesitant when it comes to using lethal force, as Not-Ellis can attest, if he weren't dead.
* {{Guns Akimbo}}: After the events of Solomon Island, he decides to up his firepower by adding a second Beretta to his arsenal and learning Filipino eskrima to wield it effectively.
* {{The Gunslinger}}: A fairly realistic example of the Woo version of this trope.
* {{Healing Factor}}: Thanks to having Excalibur's scabbard implanted inside his body, he can recover from any injury, as long as it won't kill him instantly.
* {{Heroic BSOD}}: Upon his return to London after his stint in Kingsmouth, his enforced {{Heroic Safe Mode}} breaks down completely, and he's left sobbing in his room. It takes a pep talk from Priscilla to get him back up onto his feet again.
* [[Main/ImNotaHeroIm I'm Not a Hero, I'm...]]: Says a particularly harsh version of this to {{Hero Worshipper}} Danny Dufresne when they meet, partially because his fanboy attitude grates on his already-bad mood, but mostly because [[Main/NotSoDifferent he reminds him of the idealism]] that was part of the reason why he joined the Templars - idealism that was quickly [[Main/BreakTheCutie shot to hell]].
* [[Main/ItsUptoYou It's Up to You]]: [[Main/JustifiedTrope Justified]]; though there are plenty of magical adepts within the Templars, he’s one of the few that have access to Agartha and immunity to the Filth.

* {{Japanese Pronouns}}: When speaking Japanese, he refers to himself with ''boku'' - a casual way of saying "I" without coming off as rude or aggressive.
* {{Knight in Sour Armor}}: What he becomes after his {{Heroic BSOD}}. After dwelling on the events of Kingsmouth, he comes to the conclusion that [[Main/AntiNihilist just because he lives during dark days doesn't mean that all is for naught]]. Doesn't stop him from being cynical about his chances at fighting the darkness, though.
* {{Like Brother and Sister}}: With Priscilla.

* {{Mage Marksman}}: Routinely uses guns in combination with his magic powers.
* {{Mercy Kill}}: Delivers one to Joe Slater upon his request when Priscilla refuses to.
* {{Mundane Utility}}: After getting a handle on his power, he starts using them to help him cook better.
* {{Nice Guy}}: He starts off as this, and [[Main/StoicWoobie still retains this trait]] even after all he’s been through.

* {{Not in This for Your Revolution}}: Sure, idealism and a desire to protect humanity played a part in his decision to join the Templars, but the main reason he signed up was to ensure that the other supernatural factions [[Main/HeroicNeutral would leave him and his mother alone]], as the Templars only take care of their own. He eventually does warm up to fighting for the Templars, though, if only because {{Someone Has To Do It}}.
* {{Occult Detective}}: He often takes time to investigate and combat the supernatural phenomenon he encounters during his missions.

* {{One of Us}}: He's a fan of Hanna-Barbera cartoons, plays video games, has read the [[Literature/PercyJacksonandtheOlympians Percy Jackson]] books, bonds with Carter over their love of the {{Harry Potter}} books, and being a fan of Japanese anime, he squeals with glee upon stepping foot in Tokyo.
* {{Power Incontinence}}: For the first few days after he receives them, Chase’s magical powers were almost completely uncontrollable. However, by the fifth day, he manages to get things under control.

* {{Real Men Wear Pink}}: He likes to sing, act, and dance, and keeps [[Main/InTouchWithHisFeminineSide in touch with his feminine side]] through cooking and keeping his clothes in good repair through sewing, and averts {{Men Cant Keep House}} by holding down the fort while his mom is away at work.
* {{Reluctant Hero}}
* {{Shell Shocked Veteran}}: He's very good at hiding his symptoms, though the only things he can’t hide are his [[Main/FlashbackNightmare Flashback Nightmares]].

* {{Supreme Chef}}: He first started learning after eating one too many dishes cooked by [[Main/LethalChef his mother]], and by the time the story starts, he's gotten good enough that after tasting his cooking, Priscilla starts to avoid hitting his arms during training so he can cook for her later. He only gets better when he starts working at the Temple Club.
* [[Main/SwallowedAFly Swallowed a Bee]]: How he got his powers.
* [[Main/TouchedByVorlons Touched by the Bees]]
* {{Training From Hell}}: After returning from Kingsmouth, Sonnac gets him a job washing dishes at the Temple Club, where he's subject to the same hurling of ceramic, scraps and sauce, and strident orders as those actually cooking. Rather than breaking him down, as might be expected, this actually helps him recover somewhat from his trauma, as the chefs there help drag him out of feeling sorry for himself by focusing on developing the necessary sense of urgency a cook needs. This is later continued after his return from Egypt, where he's promoted to a pantry-level position and made to do basic preparatory work, like chopping vegetables and making croutons.
* {{Tranquil Fury}}: Upon finding Pit and Pendulum delivering a {{No Holds Barred Beatdown}} to Sonnac in his office, his first action is to draw his Encore while giving them the {{Death Glare}}.
* {{Weapon of Choice}}: Besides his elemental magic, he also makes good use of his Beretta 92FS Compact, and later a second one to go along with the first before switching to the [[Main/MoreDakka Calico M950A]] and the Thompson/Center Arms Encore, the [[Main/HandCannon heavier cousin]] of the original [[Main/CoolGuns Contender]], chambered in .30-06.
* [[Main/WhenYouComingHomeDad When You Coming Home, Mom?]]: His mother works as an executive assistant, so she's often away from home for long periods of time.
