* ChannelHop: Initially intended to be released on Creator/RepriseRecords, it was self-released via streaming on the band's website after they were dropped from the label. It was then physically issued by fellow Warner subsidiary Creator/NonesuchRecords.

* ExecutiveMeddling: One of the most infamous examples in modern music. After completing the album, the band's label, Creator/RepriseRecords, dropped the band due to its uncommercial nature, ultimately allowing the band to leave with the master tapes to the album.

* ExecutiveMeddling: One of the most infamous examples in modern music. After completing the album, the band's label, Creator/RepriseRecords, dropped the band due to its uncommercial nature, ultimately allowing the band to leave with the master tapes to the album. This was an unfortunate side effect of the AOL Time Warner merger, which saw Howie Klein, the former Reprise president who had supported the band since their start, being laid off from the company.

* CutSong: Several cut songs (along with early mixes of the album) were leaked as bootlegs. Some of them have been officially released on the ''Alpha Mike Foxtrot'' rarities boxset, including "Cars Can't Escape", "Let Me Come Home", and "A Magazine Called Sunset". One of the outtakes, "Venus Stopped the Train", was reworked by Jay Bennett for his first solo album, ''The Palace at 4. A.M.''.

* TroubledProduction: Even excluding the ExecutiveMeddling noted above, the album experienced several setbacks in the recording stage, primarily due to Tweedy's dissatisfaction with Ken Coomer's drumming (which led to the band firing him and replacing him with Glenn Kotche) and repeated arguments between Tweedy and Jay Bennett over the sequencing and mixing of the album. Additionally, Tweedy suffered from migraines (which he had experienced throughout childhood), and Tweedy's attempt to mitigate the migraines led him to develop an addiction to prescription pills (which he would later receive treatment for after the recording sessions for ''A Ghost is Born'').
