** Although Bruce Willis was the first choice for Korben, he had two back to back flops in ''Hudson Hawk'' and ''Billy Bathgate'', so Creator/MelGibson was considered a safer option. He turned the role down however, and it nearly went to a lesser known actor to keep production costs down (Jean Reno was reportedly considered, but a chance meeting with Bruce Willis led to him being asked to read the script, and afterwards he immediately signed on.
** Prince as in the running to play Ruby Rhod, whose name was originally Loc Rhod (this appears in the novelization). Jean Paul Gautierre met with him to show some concept sketches of the character, but he apparently disliked them for looking too "effeminate". Yes, ''Prince'' thought the costumes were too much. It came down to Chris Tucker and Creator/JamieFoxx, and although Luc Besson liked the latter, he felt Chris Tucker's smaller frame fit the character better.

** This is one of the rare pre-2020 movies where Creator/BruceWillis is ''not'' voiced in French by Creator/PatrickPoivey. Besson wanted Poivey, but he was dismissed following a salary dispute with the local dubbing studio. He was instead dubbed by Bernard Métraux.
