* SchoolStudyMedia: The novel is a common subject of analysis in German language and literature classes, and much reviled by students for its slow pace, uneventful plot, and characters that, due to ValuesDissonance, come across as rather unlikable and irrational in their actions. To be fair to Fontane, the book was never aimed at a young adult audience, and many of the aforementioned criticisms are completely intentional on his part -- Effi's boredom and uneventful married life are a major plot point and integral to her character arc, and the unflattering portrayal of the aristocracy and military class is a very deliberate critique of 19th-century Prussian society.
