* The Franchise/FridayThe13th series is widely agreed to have Sequelitis gone steeply downhill after Film/FridayThe13thPartVIJasonLives, resulting in the films released between 1988 and 2001 being generally remembered as an AudienceAlienatingEra. While there are many reasons for this (the films struggled with low budgets, their content was severely neutered by MPAA censorship, they lost viewers to the rival Franchise/ANightmareOnElmStreet series, etc.), it's partly because Jason Lives is widely considered to be one of the best films in the series (if not the best), being beloved by fans for its imaginative visuals, creative kills, tight plot, and relatively self-aware tone (the writers of the original Film/Scream supposedly cited it as an influence). It's also one of the few entries to feature a proper hero in the lead role, with Tommy Jarvis definitively stepping into the role of Jason's nemesis--and it introduced Jason's most iconic incarnation as a hulking, deformed, nigh-unstoppable zombie with superhuman brute strength. After its release, the subsequent films largely struggled to measure up.

* German actress Luise Rainer won the Best Actress Oscar twice in a row in 1937 and 1938, a feat repeated only by Creator/KatharineHepburn. She once said about her awards that nothing worse could have happened to her, as audience expectations from then on would be too high to fulfill. Her career waned at the end of the 1930s, and she retired in 1943.

* As soon as Creator/NealMcDonough was cast as M. Bison in Film/StreetFighterTheLegendOfChunLi, he was immediately unfavorably compared to the beloved HamAndCheese performance of Creator/RaulJulia in Film/StreetFighter. Even now, the general consensus is that Juliá's charismatic take on the character is superior.

While some of those films have their fans, their success has always been hindered by the fact that they will always be compared to the original, which is simply an impossible standard to measure up to.

*** Likewise, Film/HalloweenKills had to live up to this endeavor. Critics didn't like it exactly for not being as refreshing or innovative as the 2018 film, instead going on a BloodierAndGorier route that didn't escape slasher convention.

*** Likewise, both Film/HalloweenKills and Film/HalloweenEnds had to live up to this endeavor. Critics didn't like it Kills exactly for not being as refreshing or innovative as the 2018 film, instead going on a BloodierAndGorier route that didn't escape slasher convention.convention. Ends meanwhile, was a highly divisive film that some saw as too far a departure for the franchise, and not a satisfying conclusion to what was set up by the 2018 sequel.
